Ori and the blind forest is a beautiful game, with a simple but amazing story, and it takes a lot of mechanics of other good games like guacameele and rayman, makin the gameplay one of the best platformers in this new generation.

    AN EXERCISE IN PERFECTION

Admittedly, Xbox One hasn’t had a lot going for it so far — with the exception of Sunset Overdrive, the Microsoft exclusive titles have either come hand in hand with scandal or have been subpar. What’s worse, it is well noted how nearly every multi-platform game runs better on PC and PlayStation 4. With all of that said, no one game has single-handedly turned around my opinion of a console and its future than Ori and the Blind Forest.

If you are going in blind (excuse the pun), Ori and the Blind Forest is a “metroidvania,” puzzle platformer with some light action and RPG elements. You play as Ori, a Forest Spirit, who was separated from the Spirit Tree early on. After being raised by the motherly Naru, the forest began slowly withering away. Before long, Naru succumbs to sickness and hunger and Ori is an orphan once again. With the help of an accompanying forest spirit (Sein), Ori is tasked to return the Three Elements of Light (Water, Winds, and Warmth) to bring
    balance back to the forest.

Moon Studios without a doubt knows how to tug on the heart strings — if you aren’t welling up in the first 15 minutes, I honestly doubt your humanity. Thanks in part to the beautifully orchestrated score and fantastic art style, Ori and the Blind Forest brings to mind a Pixar movie. Throughout the seven hour playthrough, I got chills from the beautifully narrated story about family and sacrifice. Sure, the story has its platformer tropes (collect three orbs to unlock three temples to save the world), it is presented in a fresh and interesting way that felt like a perfection of a genre instead of a copy.

While I can talk at ends about the storyline, it would be for naught without matching gameplay and level design. Impressively, both of these elements are just as masterfully executed. Like any other metroidvania title, the protagonist starts off weak and with a limited area to explore. Each power up you grab opens the path to a larger selection of collectables and more difficult sections of the map until the world is at your fingertips.

While this recipe is tried and true, Ori and the Blind Forest brings substantial improvements to the formula. Nearly all of the powerups add to the platforming elements, making it a joy and a breeze to get across the map. For instance, the Bash ability gained halfway through the game lets you slingshot off enemies and their projectiles. Even better, slingshotting these projectiles can help open paths or take down those same enemies.

Upgrades are given liberally through an XP system found in scattered collectables or earned by killing enemies. Up until the last second I was earning upgrades and feeling noticeably stronger.

While all the platforming and gameplay feels great, prepare to die. Alot. In my seven hour playthrough I died exactly 223 times (according to the leaderboards), and that is on the low end of the spectrum (other reviewers racking up in excess of 500 deaths). While the game has an achievement for beating the game in under three hours and one for a zero death playthrough, I doubt very many will be able to accomplish that.

Thankfully, the game implements a smart quick save/checkpoint mechanic. As long as you aren’t around enemies and have enough energy, Ori will be able to create a Spirit Flame, instantly logging the progress and allowing for upgrades. While this doesn’t make the game easier, it makes the difficult sections easier to swallow.

There are minor blips on the radar that draw away from perfection, specifically a few framerate problems, the inability to re-enter locations for 100% completion, and bizarre difficulty spikes. However, the game is so polished and these issues are so sporadic, they were never able to ruin my enjoyment of the game.

I am always hard pressed to believe the “hype” about games, however Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the best games to come out this generation, let alone on any Xbox platform. The game finds a perfect balance that both newcomers and long time gamers will enjoy, making it easily recommendable to everyone. While the game borrows from a tried and true formula, every mechanic feels fresh and polished largely thanks to the orchestrated music and stunning world. Ori is a gem that should be on everyone’s short list of “must play” games, especially at its $20 price tag.

The soundtrack and art style are both phenomenal. You could be forgiven for thinking they were all produced by a single person, such is the unity in vision between the multitude of individuals and the two studios involved. Packed with this is a simple, yet impactful story that tries and unexpectedly succeeds at tugging at the heartstrings.

The game can be finished within anywhere from 6-12 hours depending on skill level and is a wholly satisfying, contained experience that you can walk away from at the end feeling like you got your money's worth.

Finished the game in 6:57. A completely insignificant completion time from someone who was moderately invested in learning the mechanics.

Peptide needs to stop taking the anti depressants and instead take something to help with his apparent parkinson's.

The environment surrounding you reacts to your every move, and the background parallax effect is breathtaking. Even just moving and jumping around is pure joy, thanks to the smooth and responsive character animations. The music is absolutely wonderful and fits the mood of the game at all times. The sound design is also impeccable; I got chills every time I learned a new ability. The story is simple yet incredibly well executed and very touching. It really pulls you in and motivates you to save the forest.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a metroidvania platformer, so you progressively unlock new abilities that allow you to go to places you couldn't reach or access before. Backtracking never felt tedious to me in this game, because it's mostly up to you as a player. You don't have to go back and collect all the secrets and uncover the whole map, but doing so is extremely satisfying.

What I especially adore about the game's flow is the absence of hand-holding. This is a game that respects your intelligence as a player and your ability to figure things out on your own. The game may guide you subtly, but it never explicitly tells you what you need to do. Instead, it uses clever level design to introduce new gameplay mechanics to you. It all feels very instinctive and natural.

There's a simple but very welcome level-up system, with 3 perk trees that gradually improve your character's current abilities in a different way or add convenient info to your map. You get XP orbs every time you kill an enemy, and some bigger XP orbs are hidden in secret locations, so this gives you another incentive to kill enemies and explore the map. Plus, it improves the sense of progression and gives you that nice RPG feel of choosing what perk tree you level up first.

Heck, even the saving system is cool and exciting. The game doesn't save automatically for you; you have to do it manually by lighting a kindle. This can cause some really intense moments, and it punishes players for being too reckless. The difficulty curve is also perfect; the whole game offers a solid challenge, but if you remember to save often, it's still quite forgiving.

By the way, this game has no loadings, so the fun never stops and the sense of immersion is never interrupted.

I believe this is gaming at its finest. Truly a masterpiece in game design, and my personal favorite game of the year so far.

Not a perfect 10, because the game definitely rides some of the typical platforming tropes, such as unlockable areas via abilities and the like. It's more of a refinement of an existing genre that a unique experience. I'll say they pulled it off among the best in the genre though.

Overall, I cannot recall being this invested in a game as much as I am this one, because - I actually have an emotional attachment to Ori - and the forest he used to call home. That story element drives you to further enjoying the game - even if the gameplay doesn't completely separate itself from others. Moon knew this and executed on your emotions, generating a mystical and somber environment to engage the player with.

The game eases the player into the ever-increasing skillset, but before long, you will have to be creative, reactionary, and patient to master this challenging game. This difficulty, while harsh, rarely seems unfair, and creates a very rewarding experience once mastered. The world in the game is vast, favoring one large map to smaller levels, and has no load times, so the world feels as if it is alive and unified. You create your own checkpoints, so the game is great to play at your own pace. Also, when respawning after a death, there is no loading time, so dying doesn't feel frustrating or tedious. Ori and the Blind Forest is still enjoyable, obviously…it's just that those strengths are so strong that it's hard to imagine what would've been needed for that one ever-so-slightly-weaker element to match up with them. Nonetheless, it's still one heck of an accomplishment, and it's well worth your investment.
