Good classes, easy to pick up and figure out, mostly enjoyable community and hours to spend grinding which is the point of most of these games.

As always though, I would rather pay a flat fee and have the slope be the same for all. Spending 100+ hours to get to a point some with $20 seems to scare away the masses but with such a saturated market of MMORPG’s these days and most of them wanting a subscription, this is simply another mannequin along the window.

As a recovering World of Warcraft addict, I'm always looking for something else that will scratch the itch. So far, even the best substitutes have done nothing but make me want to resub more. Neverwinter is no exception. It's pretty good, but I still know WoW is better.

I've racked up more hours on this game than any other game in my 35 years of gaming (over 300) and can say that through the past year and a half I have continued returning to this game because it is simply fun.

Perfect World has done fan-service right by updating the game through new modules or events that keep the player interested in playing.

The main downside for me is that it is a bit too Diablo-esque in terms of hack and slash, although you can choose to avoid most of this if you wish to follow the story line only.

The menus have improved since I came on 18 months ago and are easy enough to navigate on the XBONE. Matchmaking is easy enough to do, although the head-to-head usually suffers from very high-level (or modded) players killing everyone on your team. PW is trying to balance this out but I prefer to do co-op play through the levels which gives you a sense of group play but without all the dying associated with PK.

So must you pay-to-play? No, but it will get you off to a great start. If you download this for free and intend to "try it out" and that becomes 12+ hours pretty quickly, then I would say you might consider spending some money. You will definitely need more, and larger, bags to store your stuff, and there is an option to buy a "monthly pass" which offers some great benefits in terms of opening boxes filled with stuff you need to have in order to have a full Neverwinter experience (this also gives you access to special other benefits based on how many months you buy). PW has sales on Zen, their in-game currency, and that is when to buy.

18 months on this an it remains a fun game to return to! There is the added benefit of it being "small children friendly" as you are often killing monsters (and not men), there is little gore to see on-screen, and swearing by PCs is pretty much non-existent (like anything multiplayer is filled with whatever swearing the human mind can create).

    Have Fun!

So hears my advice if you have nothing better to do have no competitive side to you at all and just want to sit and mash buttons this is the game for you. If you actually want a challenge then this is not. It is free to play unfortunately that is only true if you have no will to advance your character. Just getting your character mobile and able to quest/rId for any length of time you will be spending well over $150 so save some time and money and just find a mmo that is prescription based that you enjoy and enjoy a much fuller and rewarding game. I'm shocked at the negative reviews that say nothing negative about the actual game, just the price of micro-transactions.

The story, the graphics, the controls are all awesome (I strongly prefer it to PC) and the amount of content you can experience for free is staggering.

The microtransactions ARE pricey, and most players should steer clear of them. It's perfectly playable entirely for free, and I can only recommend spending money if you're a hard-core, daily, 50+ hours a month player. If you are, the subscription option is half the price of most games, and is highly recommended.

Missing from the XB1 version of the game are the awesome (but pricey) bundles offered in the PC version, which are a great value IF you are going to play the game long-term.

Innovations I really enjoy are the dungeoneering skill / kits -- different classes have different gathering nodes (clerics can gather religious artifacts, while other characters need 'kits' to gather), and each class has different skills that are useful in instances. The crafting in the game is far above average, and they're adding a new mastery system in the next patch (on PC, may be down the pipeline for XB1). The Campaign system is great, and a nice Alternate Advancement system.

Bottom line, this game is definitely worth a look for players interested in a console MMO. For me, it's the best available and I choose to support this game financially. Casual players may find the prices of the shop a turn-off, or may find the leveling too quick or the end-game too grindy. For me, I enjoy this blend and plan to for years to come.

This is a paid to win game and if you want to reach a high-end player level, you better get that wallet ready or you will be forced to grind at least 8 hours per day. PvP is impossible, you will get matched with people who have gear 2 times better than yours - impossible to win, you will just die each time you try to do something. Would not recommend.

I played Neverwinter on the PC when it was first released. While I had a decent time with the game, I gradually lost interest and stopped playing far before hitting the level cap. While I did not think that I would bother to play the game again, I figured that it would be interesting to see how Neverwinter plays on the X-box One. I like free games and MMORPGs, so why not? After all, II played Neverwinter on the PC when it was first released. While I had a decent time with the game, I gradually lost interest and stopped playing far before hitting the level cap. While I did not think that I would bother to play the game again, I figured that it would be interesting to see how Neverwinter plays on the X-box One. I like free games and MMORPGs, so why not? After all, I thought that the game’s combat system seemed more suited to a controller during my time with it on the PC.

After playing from levels 1-20, I can confirm my initial impression: I am having a lot more fun with the X-Box One version of Neverwinter. The combat system, which seems like a mix of Dragon Age: Inquisition and Kingdoms of Amalur, feels a lot more at home on the controller. Dispatching enemies as my trickster rogue feels a lot smoother than it did on my keyboard.

Other than the combat, the game is pretty much the same. Character creation is good, with many different races and classes available. However, the classes may not be what Dungeons and Dragons fans expect (I’ll come back to this). I have only played through one dungeon (The Cloak Tower, the first dungeon available), but I had a lot of fun during my two runs. Furthermore, I think that Neverwinter has a good free to play model. While you can spend money for nice extras available through the in-game store, at no point have I felt like I need to spend real money to advance through the game.

While I have been enjoying my time with Neverwinter, I have quite a few concerns. First, the areas are very linear and small, especially in comparison to other MMOs. The small areas, combined with the game’s overwhelming emphasis on combat, can make questing feel like a grind (despite the combat being enjoyable overall). Additionally, the writing and voice acting are both hit and miss. Occasionally actors sound bored/unconvincing. Furthermore, while the overarching narrative and individual quests are engaging enough to hold my interest, they are definitely not at the level of something like The Witcher 3 or even Skyrim. Also worth noting is that, unlike on the PC, there does not appear to be user-made quests in the X-Box version of Neverwinter. While this has not bothered me thus far, I imagine that some players will be disappointed by this loss.

As I mentioned before, the classes in Neverwinter might disappoint Dungeons and Dragons fans. While D&D staples like the mage, rogue, fighter, and ranger are all playable, the customization is very limited. If you play as a fighter, for example, you will play as either a Guardian Fighter or a Great Weapon Fighter. You are unable to multi-class or build your class in a specific way like you can in many other D&D games or tabletop D&D (though my experience with the latter is limited). Furthermore, the game is very action oriented, resulting in some of the classes playing different roles than they normally do in D&D. For example, a rogue in D&D is usually in charge of traps, lockpicking, and backstabbing. However, a pure rogue simply cannot go toe-to-toe against a fighter or ranger. However, Neverwinter’s trickster rogue class is a killing machine that can easily slay anything in her way. While this does not bother me too much, I can see how many D&D fans will be frustrated by changes such as this. I have also heard that the PvP is fairly imbalanced (with the aforementioned trickster rogue being overpowered), but I have not tried the PvP myself.

Overall, I think that the X-Box One version of Neverwinter is much more fun than its PC counterpart, though it definitely is not for everyone. Fans of traditional D&D in particular might be disappointed by Neverwinter’s all-action take on the classic roleplaying game. Despite this, it is definitely worth a try. After all, the game is free!

Also, the class has the chance to get a special weapon which levels with you, making it the most overpowered weapon in the game until you hit 60.

It does start with some D&D flavor. Especially in the early dungeons. But as you get to higher level dungeons all that flavor seems to disappear.

Sadly it seems to suffer from that pay to win atmosphere so many F2P games suffer from these days.

So you can pay to win. Or you can get a group of friends and farm the very small instances over and over and over again. It's a typical F2P MMO, nothing to write home about.

Neverwinter is one of the best games to hit console in a long, LONG time. Being free-to-play, you can put hundreds of hours into the game without dropping a penny, but most will feel the need or urge to upgrade their mount, companion, or to buy an additional bag to carry more items. Bottom line the game is a fantastic MMO with excellent combat, great co-operative online play, an addictive leveling system, plenty of depth, and a really nice colorful art style with a lot of variety to the enemies and environments. I want to give this game a 9.5 because the only thing holding it back from absolute greatness is the frame rate in some crowded areas and the main city (Protector's Enclave). The main city or main hub does have a lot of players running around, and you notice the frame rate drop right away. Although, once you venture out of the city the frame rate improves dramatically, and once you hit the dungeons it almost looks like it hits 50-60fps at times (probably between 30 and 40 realistically). Dungeons with max players runs pretty good actually.

To any developers reading this. If you can up the frame rate and make it more consistent you have an absolute hit on your hands. Great job and thanks a ton for making a fantastic free-to-play MMO.

But, it's been damn fun learning it.

For the most part the servers have been fairly stable more times than not. In the 4 weeks I've been playing I can only recall one night when the servers were horribly unplayable for me personally. The UI takes some getting used to as the tutorial only really seems to teach you the basics. After that, you're kind of on your own at times as far as figuring out what the hell you're looking at on the screen. If you take the time to understand it, it's not so bad and starts to make sense.

Once you're in the main hub of the game the huge world is teaming with life, both AI and user controlled. There are players running around all over the place seeking vendors or starting and completing quests. There are several different towns to unlock and visit with each one having a ton of different quests and dungeons to complete, some towns even have their very own massive Dragon that you and several other people can fight together against it. Here's where the frame rate can sometimes(not always)become an issue, but it's manageable and the battle are still fun.

The character building is pretty deep as well, as particular Paragon paths, skills and various abilities and powers require a lot of thought before commitment as to the particular direction you want your character to go. Unless you are already familiar with how everything works, the old adage "Trial by Fire" applies here. Here's where a tutorial would have been much needed imo. Let's just say that I will not be making the same character building mistakes with my second character as I did with my first Control Wizard character.

This is my first plunge into the MMORPG universe and I have to say that it's been a pretty fun ride so far. The world, city and towns are massive. There's so much going on and so much to do to keep you busy for a while. The game is deceptively deep. You don't understand how deep it really is until you start getting into the guts of it all. If you're not an impatient person and don't mind a learning curve you just might enjoy this game too. It's been the best free to play game I've played so far.

This is a typical MMORPG. I like it because it's set in the D and D environment. The idea / concept is great and the PC edition really is pretty good (8-ish).

Though I applaud the attempt to bring an MMORPG like this to the console, the graphics are worse than that of my system with the GTX 650 and the gameplay is so laggy on the console, it becomes unplayable in different spots whereas on the PC I get hardly any lag even in extremely populated areas.

When you get to any moderately populated area on the Xbox One version, whether there are NPCs or Player Characters, expect lots of lag. They really need to get the lag issue taken care of on the console. This game is really CPU and single-core heavy on the PC version, so it's really going to be an uphill battle for the MMORPG genre in general (unless the game engines are completely rewritten for the task) to run smoothly on an under-powered console CPU.

I'm glad they are bringing this type of game to the console because it's nice to sit on the couch and grind through the missions, but they have a ways to go to really make it playable. If this is all you know, the lag and weak graphics may not bother you, but based on my previous experience with the PC version (even compared to my lower-end gamer with the GTX 650), it definitely bothers me.

I would say this is good for a free game simply because of the entertainment value to cost ratio, but when you've played this game on better hardware, you can't rate it very highly.

Beyond the tutorial stuff, the crafting/enchanting is still on my 'to learn' list. Also, I'd like to get a mount someday. Not sure I'll spend any money on this game but that's a great point: you don't actually have to spend a dime and will still have fun.
This game loses 2 points due to not having anything really new to give me (8) - however, there's a 0 score by some moron that I need to help offset so I'm giving back a point (9 baby!).

    UPDATE
I'm 3+ weeks into the game and loving it. I now have an additional bag and a mount for each of my characters. Both are level 35, wandering around killing demons/devils, killing Carthraxis (small-raid dragon), and still haven't spent a dime on the game.
If I do eventually spend some money on the game it will probably be to unlock a new character slot or two.

It is a very good MMORPG, and the fact that is in a console is better. the gameplay is very good and fluid. surprisingly the aspect of a free-t-play never got me mad. i felt like i was playing a game that i spent mu $60 on it. Really impressed and had a lot of fun with it so far. Special mention should be made of the controls, which I admit I found daunting to begin with, but once you get it is really intuitive. Gets around the lack of a keyboard in such an ingenious way. Kudos to the developers!

Slow start with a poor tutorial system on how basically EVERY feature of how the game works other than basic combat. Everything else is a wall of text that they force you to read to get an understanding... but after you establish a minimal understand of what the hell is going on around you and what you are even capable of doing, the game opens up to have a bit more of a real MMO feel.Slow start with a poor tutorial system on how basically EVERY feature of how the game works other than basic combat. Everything else is a wall of text that they force you to read to get an understanding... but after you establish a minimal understand of what the hell is going on around you and what you are even capable of doing, the game opens up to have a bit more of a real MMO feel. Another downfall would be they give you the bare minimum of what you need to play the game, and because of it, you are left with an insatiable hunger for everything that costs money in the game to benefit you from Bag Space to Companions... and the game is severely less enjoyable with out them.

The best / funnest part of playing this MMO was playing with friends, unfortunately it is also the slowest way to progress through the level grinding stage of the game due to the limitations set by the pay to play features... eg, You never have enough bag space, so if you play with friends, you will find yourself spending 5-20 minutes between quests clearing items for different people unless you paid for extra bag space... that or turning in quests in different areas of the game and without a high speed mount, its a boring and long walk most of the time.

My biggest quarrel with the entire game was its poor Customer Service Policies. I had spent 100$ on the game in the first week being deceptively tricked into thinking the game was alot more than it was, and along the way while playing with friends, I experienced a programming glitch that did not allow me to get quests for an entire instance area (Neverdeath Graveyard). Because of this glitch, I quickly fell WAY behind my group of friends I was playing with and had absolutely no way to keep up because majority of experience in the game comes from quest turn ins... so I reported the problem to customer service, and requested for some sort of compensation in the form of an exp booster so I could try to quickly catch up to my friends, but was replied with a msg letting me know that I was experiencing an unreported bug, and directed me to the forums to go do THEIR JOB for them in the form of explaining the bug, while at the same time apologizing to me because its against policy for them to compensate anyone for any reason. I understand if I was a normal free to play player who "gets what they paid for", but I was obviously an actual paying customer that was told basically, "I am sorry you spent money on my broken game, too bad, have a nice day!"... Terribly pathetic.

This game is what I was waiting for on the consoles. The fact that you have to aim your target every time you want to attack brings a super fun and challenging gameplay. Would've been more like an 8.5 but I had to try and offset the damn 0 review on here. This game has a few kinks but definitely not a 0. In fact, I was really impressed it was free to play and was waiting for a catch (like a level cap, limited supplies or just some way to force us to spend money) but it is just a great MMO with everything I like about the Medieval fantasy strategy games.Would've been more like an 8.5 but I had to try and offset the damn 0 review on here. I always go with ranged classes when available (ie archers) and I'm cobtinually impressed with the level of depth. Many attacks to choose from and each is executed without flaw for the most part (besides me getting used to the controls). Love the grouping system and, even though I've only put in a few hours, I know it will only get better and better. Guilds seem awesome even though I just joined mine.

Overall I'm looking forward to many more hours of gameplay.... when I don't have life to worry about. :)

I love this port to the Xbox One. I've played several MMOs and I'm really impressed how they've managed to map the controls to the console platform. The amount of content is staggering considering it's Free-to-Play, and the customisation options for the character in terms of both skills/powers (i.e. "build") and social aspects are broad and complex. Neverwinter is quite a mixed bag: there's plenty of fun in all its quests and controls are adapted very well for the controller, but it's also pretty repetitive, technically lacking and with a microtransaction system that tends to be a little perverse.

The Xbox One version is pretty much identical to the PC one, if you don't consider some nasty framerate drops that really shouldn't be there.

Neverwinter might be competent, but it's rarely fun or interesting. [Issue#161, p.96]
