    Been a fan since MHFU and world brings a lot to the table in innovation! The graphics and gameplay are stepped up from previous installments, the life and world in monster hunter never has felt so alive my only small gripe is some of the weapon designs feel uninspired compared to older titles

    Monster Hunter World a a hard game to get into, but once you are, you get hooked. Especially the gameplay is just perfection. But you have to like the japanese style. Overall rating: 8.7.

    Following on from some of the reviews, I thought this game would be really boring. But it’s so well done and addictive, that I’m now 1000 hours in and still going strong . And I haven’t even played iceborne yet. I just wish there were more layered armor‘s available earlier on in the game.

    One of my all time favorite games. I’m giving it a 10 not because it is a perfect game but because it is peak monster hunter. Yes the story is terrible, yes the menus led are clunky and online is rough. But my word if this isn’t the best monster hunter experience you can have! This game is a must and a great entry point for new players.

    I'm gonna be honest I couldn't play the game because I had to sit through all the cutscenes. When they add that I can skip cutscenes then I'll finish the game.

    To be honest, I loved this game. Yes, the multiplayer is garbage on x-box, but I just played most of the game solo, that's one problem solved. Other people might have an issue with the multiplayer, but for me it's just mildly inconvenient. The combat took getting used to, but was easy to get the hang of. I really liked the monsters (except lavasioth. Lavasioth can burn in hell) and weaponsTo be honest, I loved this game.     It starts off with a trashy opening, and then after that 20 minutes things start looking really good! A jungle playground with fun and beautiful twists and turns, hunting a beast that runs away a couple times. It seems like the most alive game you've ever played! Then it starts showing it's MMO style seams, it starts to loose it's magic, and it makes you do the dumbest "boss fight"It starts off with a trashy opening, and then after that 20 minutes things start looking really good! By this time I was getting mad that my weapon was better than even other ones I was upgrading a lot, and it turns out it's a special sword given to new players, along with your armor, that completely ruins the progression of leveling up your gear that the entire game is built on, who made this mind numbing decision really **** up! Seriously, if you can borrow a copy from a friend, play through the initial jungle area, it's level design feels next-gen, just not any other part of the game… Expand

    I was expecting something tottaly different. This is not an open world game, you are literally restrained to a small hub where you select quests. The quests seems meaningless as you get randomly throwed at an random map. The combat mechanics are dull, not fluid, not satisfying. The fact that you can go through any character and monster like if they where ghosts makes the game feel like itI was expecting something tottaly different.     The Game is beautiful
    Every monster gives you a unique fight and is worth fight.
    With 14 weapons to choose from which all are unique and are useful, you can use every weapon against every monster and win the fight if you know what you are doing.     O jogo é muito bom, é sempre animador ir em busca de caçadas novas e enfrentar monstros novos, não existe nivel de personagem nem skills, tudo depende de qual arma você masteriza, a evolução da mesma e da sua armadura.
    O problema é que certas mecânicas de jogabilidade não são apropriadas para os padrões de hoje, infelizmente não é fluída como deveria ser, deixa muito a desejar quando    O jogo é muito bom, é sempre animador ir em busca de caçadas novas e enfrentar monstros novos, não existe nivel de personagem nem skills, tudo depende de qual arma você masteriza, a evolução da mesma e da sua armadura.
    O problema é que certas mecânicas de jogabilidade não são apropriadas para os padrões de hoje, infelizmente não é fluída como deveria ser, deixa muito a desejar quando alguns monstros possuem habilidade de atordoar, ou colocar para dormir por exemplo, no qual seu personagem fica completamente vulnerável, e atordoamento é uma "mecânica" já ultrapassada hoje em dia, tendo sido deixado para trás nos antigos RPGs.

    I didnt understand before playing that this was a Japanese style game. Simply not my thing. Fabulous hair and MASSIVE frikkin swords.. uninstalled very quickly.
    Thankfully this was a Game Pass title so I didn't waste any actual money on it.

    Played on PS when first released and played again on Xbox via Xbox game pass. just finished main story. This is not a story based game. The story is about introduce you to the monster which you fight again and again. very in depth game. may look cute but a lot strategy. game well produced and a few micro transactions but only cosmetic. worth a buy

It is all-the-time the same thing: get info about new monster type, make preparations, spend time on looking for that monster, long killing process, win or try again. And again, again, again the same. Plus you need to kill one monster many times to get pieces for your armor.     It's a great rpg, lots of monster to kill and a great looking world. One thing i really don't like, is that there's no pause button. Tracking a monster can take a long time and sometimes you just want to take a break, but this is no possibility. This game should have a singleplayer option, instead of the always online mode.

Сказать что-либо за базовый игровой процесс, затруднительно, ибо схема работает, как обычно, 50 на 50. Владелец персонажа либо втянется в круговорот умерщвления чудовищ, либо, с хмурой миной, скажет на первой же охоте: "Цикл закончится тут". Таким образом, тем кто знает, не нужно объяснять для чего бегать по местным локам, прыгая с лианы на лиану, в поисках следов братвы Годзиллы, а начинающих следопытов в глубину системы не завлечь даже круто смоделированными котиками и курочкой, что позавидует KFC.    … Expand

    This was my first Monster Hunter game and I freaking love it. It's graphically amazing, has some of the best bosses in any video game and has amazing gameplay. When I first bought this game I wasn't too big on it. After playing it again recently I've started to realize how amazing this game really is. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

    monster hunter world defiantly is amazing run through a world that i didn't know at first but became a giant fan of when all was said and done. its beautiful it was challenging but after putting in close to 300 hours into this game i can say without a doubt one of the best capcom games of all time

    I haven't played a minute of Monster Hunter games in the past. I spent nearly an hour with it and didn't like a second of it. Sorry :/ The game was incredibly confusing, was not given appropriate modifications for English so all of the dub ins feel weird because the lips are not motioning to English lip movements and were constantly off. The cooperative aspect was also not working despiteI haven't played a minute of Monster Hunter games in the past. I spent nearly an hour with it and didn't like a second of it. Sorry :/ The game was incredibly confusing, was not given appropriate modifications for English so all of the dub ins feel weird because the lips are not motioning to English lip movements and were constantly off. La structure est celle d'un MMO d'ailleurs... à part buter du streum petit, moyen ou gros, on passe sa vie à ramasser des trucs et des machins, dépecer chaque carcasse, fabriquer des bidules avec les trucs et les machins et tutti quanti. Sans compter les armes et armures et blablabla...

    L'interface générale est fouillis, la mini-carte est confuse et les combats ne cassent pas trois pattes à un canard. Je n'ai essayé qu'avec une arme à distance et c'est clairement mal implémenté et très laborieux. La chasse m'a l'air bien pompée sur le Witcher 3 mais tout en moins bien, en plus lourd et moins intuitif.

    Le monde en lui-même n'a rien de vraiment ouvert et propose des couleurs ternes et un ensemble globalement flou et peu engageant, peu lisible. Quand on enclenche le mode fluidité (sur la X), le jeu accroche encore souvent et lorsqu'on passe à la "haute résolution", on se demande où elle est passée... la haute résolution. Bref, graphiquement le jeu est à la masse !

    La partie sonore aussi est bien tiédasse et participe à cette impression de mollesse générale et d'un manque évident de sensations. L'ambiance est trop bon enfant et manque aussi de sérieux... des chats qui parlent, font la bouffe et tout ça... hein ? quoi ? plaît-il ? La musique d'ascenseur, les voix bêbêtes... putain, on est bien dans un jeu Capcon.

    Et puis pourquoi il veut que je crée une session multi sur le Xbox Live quand je reprends simplement ma partie ? me voilà obligé de lancer le jeu hors-ligne pour qu'il charge correctement et normalement ma sauvegarde. Si le solo vous emmerde, messieurs, il fallait pas le faire du tout : faites juste un multi-grind-coop obligatoire et basta ! enfin bref, que du temps perdu avec cette daube.    … Expand

    No end game is the problem but before you get there you ll have +200-300h and If you want play more that 1-2 weapon with skills you need alot more time , got +500h and had play only 3 weapons.

Many of the game's locations contain some truly beautiful scenery. The monsters are fun to hunt and the rewards you get from hunting and questing are substantial. The controls are smooth, the story while rather thin is still interesting, the crafting is varied and aesthetically pleasing. It is just a great game in almost every way. I don't see how this game is worthy of the critical 9s and 10s it's getting.     Longer version:
    Performance is atrocious on the base Xbox One S. It's not true 1080p and not even 900p; MHW on Xbox One S renders at 1536x864. Textures look muddy, draw distance is awful, and even with the major resolution concession and advanced graphical options clearly on mid-low settings it rarely hits 30fps. 26fps is average with spikes far lower, especially in zones like Ancient Forest or Rotten Vale. For a game whose gameplay is built around timing, evading, and precise hitting, these frame rates and constant jutters are simply unacceptable. Heaven forbid you play something like Insect Glaive which is highly dependent on fast paced mobility and maintaining fluid combat: You WILL see your FPS drop into the teens.

    Gameplay: Some may applaud the streamlined gameplay as a way to get more people into the franchise but I feel it's gone too far. For long time players of the pre-World franchise, these changes will make them shake their heads and bust out the "back in my day" memes. Dumbing down the core gameplay by adding elements like scoutflies, autocrafting, and automatic "material" inventory management would be fine if they hadn't also reduced the number of monsters in the game. Excluding subspecies, MHW only has 27 unique monsters. That's the smallest number of any modern home console iteration of the Monster Hunter series. Only the PS2 versions had fewer.

    Additionally, most of the monsters share the same mechanics and, in high rank play, the difficulty is only in avoiding their cheap AI juggle combos: chain stun or paralyze, chain knockback and knockdown, and poison or fire DOTs. You can gear up to protect against one of those but not all of them, so the game becomes absolutely unforgiving in a cheap way. Mistime just one move and you can find yourself stunlocked and then fainted before you can react. Sorry but that's not my idea of a fun time, especially since your weapon skill and combo performance is often rendered moot by terrible frame rate slowdowns. And since the monsters share this core gameplay design, every monster starts feeling the exact same, becoming dull quickly.

    Multiplayer is an absolute headscratcher. During the "main story", if one can call it that, the game is very punishing about trying to play with friends. First, everyone has to be in the same 'instanced' world to be able to play in a group. Then, if you or a friend haven't seen the cutscene of an assigned (main story) mission, you can't coop. This practically means everyone has to stay one mission ahead of your lowest/slowest party member or you all have to do some idiotic juggling so everyone sees the cutscene at the same time, then everyone drop out and join someone else, sitting through multiple loading screens just to be able to coop. You can't directly coop into an Expedition AT ALL - you have to rely on the SOS Flare or use an investigation quest to launch into an Expedition. This only gets better by end game where custcenes are no longer an issue and the game revolves around grinding/farming investigations and optional/arena missions. Capcom's multiplayer design for this game is a complete mess and actively pushes against players.

    I'm cannot for the life of me understand why this game is getting so much praise. The poor performance alone should knock it down to a 7, and in watching Digital Foundry videos it's clear the game doesn't even truly benefit from the mid-system upgrades of the Xbox One X or PS4 Pro - both are slightly better but ONLY slightly.    … Expand

This game is great value for money and I haven't encountered any bugs or issues in the 13 hours I've played so far. There is not much more I can say here without ruining the plot of the game.     Este monster es muy divertido, sobretodo con tus amigos, para cazar juntos a la bestias que son geniales, el modo coop es lo mejor. Hay mucha variedad de todo, bestias, armaduras, misiones. Este juego es muy largo, después de terminarte la campaña aun hay muchas cosas por hacer. Y lo mejor es que pondrán contenido gratuito con el tiempo.

    -Tempereds are pure artificial difficulty instead of being a "double edged sword" mechanic like Hypers and Frenzied/Apex monsters were.
    -Also difficulty in general isnt optimized enough for the more smooth gameplay, which makes most of the game easier than Gen/GU (and ppl consider it the easiest entry in the series b4 World released)

    MHW is a great game, just not a great MH game. imo (Been playing the series for 9 years; Played Tri, 3U, 4U, Gen, Online and Frontier. Soon with MHGU. 4K+ hours total, I hav in the series.)

    Ill explain a lil more on some points and add something else in case u want to read more:

    I've enjoyed some of the changes that have made the experience more accessible, less frustrating, or tedious.

    But I still wound up playing a lot less of MHW do to the way it handles weapon diversity, end-game, and social aspects. I take it that the changes to map design and monster interactivity took precedence over things like weapon designs, or even being able to play multiplayer while in cutscenes (even though you could do that even in MH4U), and the big issue of how non-committal online works has generally made for a much less engaging experience.

    Also; this may just be me; but when I first started out in MHTri, I had no idea what I was even doing. (I did better in 3U on 3DS) I jumped online, when I owned MH4U, and started my first room to see if I could just hunt with folks, and a veteran joined up and went out of their way to teach me the more advnaced ropes. We probably spent 4-5hrs hunting, but the experience was great.

    After that I made it a rule that I would always pass on whatever knowledge I had to newcomers, and always be courteous and helpful when hunting. With the changes made; You just don't really get the opportunity to chat with other hunters much. From how easy, and more efficient it is to have drop-in multiplayer. Sure, rooms exist, but a lot of people still don't even use the gathering hall. I sort of miss that sense of camaraderie you could get from learning from, and teaching other hunters.    … Expand

    There’s a large variety of monsters, all with different strengths and weaknesses. SO this part of the game has some depth, however, the buggers just constantly run from you, including the bosses so it feels almost like a running simulator rather than a monster hunting action game.

    Something I've seen a lot of people talk about is the story and I definitely agree, its not good. From what I've heard its better than that of previous games, but still I find it lackluster and it is definitely going disappoint many western players. Most of the cutscenes are concentrated in the beginning, with almost all the other cutscenes being towards the end. The best part of the game is learning to battle these large(or sometimes massive) monsters, every single monster acts differently and has beautiful turf wars. The monsters also interact with the environment, this is sometimes to your advantage or but can also be pretty bad for you. This means that every single time you battle them its completely different and that's something amazing. The amount of things to do in the game might intimidate some players, especially towards the end where you have to deal with some of the most complicated UI's. But mastering them is definitely worth it. Monster hunter has so much content already ingame it would take a year to finish it, but with free DLC coming to it throughout the year (and hopefully next year) there will never be time finish the game.    … Expand

    The Monster Hunter series has been known for being a game with a throw away story with amazing monster battles. Many people coming to this game with a focus on narrative will be disappointed with the lack of content in that area. Visually the game looks good and sometimes even reaching greatness with much of the particle effects going on in the game. For the most part the traditional Monster Hunter gameplay is still here as you're given a mission to hunt and kill a specific type of monster of your choice through expeditions. Story Quests have chosen the monster you will hunt or capture as you progress through the main story. Killing monsters is as satisfying as ever as you break off parts from the monster and even severing limbs. This gives a sense of progression through combat that is sure to please most, but understandably not all as there is no health bar of any sort to indicate if a monster is close to death. Instead the developers decided to show instead of tell by demonstrating the monster running away with a limp and going to sleep to try and recover from all the damage being done. Sadly if you're not a fan of the combat mechanic or find the tracking system engaging then this game most likely isn't for you. Sadly the game does a poor job introducing most mechanics in the game such as weapon and armor crafting which could have seriously helped get most gamers hooked. Personally I believe that the aspect this game does best is the satisfaction of killing a monster you once had such huge troubles with, using its remains to craft better and cooler gear just to kill it with its own flesh and bones.

    This game does falter after a few hours though as much of the gameplay can and will feel repetitive. A tip to keep the game feeling fresh is to try different weapons or approaches to defeating a monster you have trouble with. Another complaint that is apparent is that the game is "a kid game" or " for children" which is hard to comprehend as much of the games mechanics would fly over a child's head. The combat and difficulty of some of these enemies is too high for a child to play correctly (not saying it cant be done, just unlikely). The Japanese stigma is that most of their games are child like such as Pokemon, which is highly regarded as an amazing game over and over. So why criticize this game for the same thing?

    in the best conclusion I could come up with, this game is addictive to those looking more or less for massive battles with sadly not so varied monsters. It does have its faults but one simply cant deny that this game runs beautifully with no frame rate dips, crashes, or huge bugs plaguing the gameplay (Having played this on the XB ONE S for >45 hours). Also just for those who love sound in games this one will have great sounding environments as you hack and slash monsters but with bad to bellow average voice acting its more of a hit and miss. The voice acting could also at times take you out of the game wondering if they just used the first take and said **** it, there's no time for a second take!" Sad to have that here but luckily overshadowed by the awesome roaring sounds of monsters. Personally I recommend this game only for those who know what they're getting themselves into as the game wont exactly compel you to keep playing through story but through gameplay. I though there was no way I would remember all the different menus, sub menus and different aspects to the game, its like a bombardment of information to start off with. Also the hunting just felt a bit crap and the weapons were not very satisfying. I imagine this is where many of the negative reviews come from, the fact that people have not kept going through the first 20-30hrs of slog.

    However, I persevered considering myself a fairly intelligent gamer with yrs of experience of adventure RPGs. Now around 50 hrs in I truly have a different perspective on the game, it's depth is what makes the game all consuming. You have to simply spend the time to learn all the features and put in the effort - then all of a sudden the hunting becomes more strategic, the weapon controls become intuitive, the menus all make sense and you don't really care that the character never speaks. I am now mastering the insect glaive and find this weapon to be so versatile and effective to my play style I don't think I'll be using any other weapon for a while. So I really do think this game deserves the hype and great acclaim it has received, it truly is a rewarding experience mastering the game. I still would like more in depth character development and better voice acting hence only 9, but then this game is not really about the characters but about the monsters - which are mesmorising at times. Had to go to Youtube to find out that it's not about leveling your armor but having multiple pieces of gear with the same skill. There's no good explanation for why you need to eat, just do it. It took me forever to figure out how to craft a trap. As a new player to the franchise this was just stupidly frustrating.

    The second thing that turned me off is the combat. I don't know who designed the combat mechanics, but I would like to so that I can avoid any games they work on from here until the end of time. The process for taking down a monster is pretty straightforward. Track them down, engage, dodge until you get an opening, attack in the opening, dodge back out. This should be fun, but it's marred by controls that take an absolute age to do anything. Melee weapons require you to be so close to the monster that you literally can't see your own character at times, let alone what the monster is doing. For a game that is predicated on reading the tells of the monster, it makes it ridiculously hard to do that while your in the midst of thwacking away at it. The camera also doesn't seem to have a way to lock to a target. I found myself constantly having to fiddle with the camera IN THE MIDDLE OF COMBAT JUST TO SEE THE MONSTER. Add to that that all of your action items are on a quick select menu and that to use them you have to put your weapon away and then wait for a ridiculously long animation to finish before the effect takes place. Down on health and going for that potion? You'll most likely be dead during the animation as the monster stomps you and you get none of the healing effects. The combat is just a pile of frustrating mechanics stacked on top of each other. Did I mention that each monster is going to take between 10-45 minutes to kill? And this is what you'll be doing for most of the game.

    Lastly I want to mention the phenomenally stupid decisions around multiplayer. There is no easy way to group up and do quests. You have to jump through a stupid number of hoops to play with your friends. If you haven't discovered a monster before, you can't group up with others to go hunt it. For a game that is supposed to be all about teaming up to kill monsters, they make it extremely hard to do so.

    I wanted to like this game. It seemed interesting and different from other ones I have played in the past. But I cannot get past the enormously frustrating lack of guidance and incredibly slow combat. If I could return it, I would, but I bought it digital, so I'll have to just deal. Lesson learned to listen to my instincts if I think I'm not going to like a game.    … Expand

The game is completely 3D and multiplayer, fights are real time action, the environment is immersive, and there are so many things you can do. The game features main (hub-like) towns where you will establish a base, accept quests, craft, eat food, do more crafting, and finally, CRAFT. This game has a lot of crafting and it works really well. A lot of new and returning features are present in Monster Hunter World and we will break them down below.

    --The Good--
    The gameplay is rock solid, fluid and responsive. The interface has been given a serious overhaul and is far less overwhelming to new players. Harvesting high use items (potions etc.) is now a breeze with the option to auto craft once the materials are collected in the field. Re-sharpening weapons is also much less stressful since whetstones are now infinite. The monsters themselves can have unpredictable move patterns and can actually fight each other so each fight feels fresh. The variety of game modes and equipment are fantastic and implemented in a way that is not overwhelming. The graphics are beautiful for all characters, monsters, and the open world, there are very few FPS drops, and everything flows together nicely.

    --The Not So Good--
    Although the game has a lot of good, some elements seem a little off. Most of these are easily fixable and will hopefully be addressed in coming updates.

    --The climbing mechanic--
    The ability to climb (sometimes) on the larger monsters is awesome, but the indicators for your current grip is confusing to read and is inconsistent at best.

    --The lack of a damage indication--
    This can be a real problem in larger fights. It is not always obvious when a player takes a hit and receives damage. This is problematic because without an indication, players will have no reason to look at their health bars. I have died a few times because of this (also, I suck).

    --Retreating Monsters--
    When fighting bosses, they often retreat to different zones periodically throughout the fight to heal or regroup. The issue becomes when a boss is close to death and limping but can still limp faster than I can sprint. I understand this it to make killing them more challenging, but it feels artificial in a game that normally feels so organic.

    --Multiplayer--
    Like many of the other Monster Hunter titles, there is co-op multiplayer mode (no PvP). You can join or create a game server and work with others to complete quests, or just explore. In a game like monster hunter this is a key element however there seems to be some problems that Capcom should probably smooth over.

    Currently, there is no direct way to join an expedition (the free roaming mode) with your party. In order to explore the open world in a group you must shoot/respond to an SOS flare or complete an investigation or mission together and return to camp together (this automatically starts an expedition). The story mission has some serious flaws (this one is important so listen up). Currently, you cannot join another player’s story mission until both players have watched the required cutscenes. This offers two huge problems: it completely breaks the flow of the game, and in order to join a story mission, players must watch the cutscene, wait for the game to prompt ‘SOS Flares are now available’, ‘return’ from mission and THEN join it together. The cut-scenes are unskippable, so why can’t players join together to start? The timing should be correct if all players are watching the same unskippable cutscene at the same time. Clearly some aspects of multiplayer gaming needs some work, and hopefully Capcom will get on these issues soon.

    --Verdict--
    The gripes that I have this game are easily offset by the hours upon hours of fun I have had. The main issues all have workarounds (while annoying, it’s worth it to play). The game is vast, has a great difficulty scaling and will leave players wanting more. This game offers a lot of help to those who are new to the series while keeping with the traditions of old to please even the hardest of core veterans. I would strongly recommend this game!

    I wanted to return to this game's review as i've spent much more time with it since last remarking on it.

    First and foremost--the initial statement I made stands. For a game based around combat--the combat mechanics stink. I mean they are abysmally bad. Depth of field, lock-on, movement, and a camera that swivels around erratically all the damn time are some of the worst I have experienced in my near 40 years of playing video games.

    Even weapon impact, an easy tell for players to know that they are accomplishing their attack is lackluster. The entire package feels floaty at BEST and broken at worst. Animation clipping, phasing through monsters, rolling animations coming across as sliding on two feet and sometimes clipping the underbrush (thus rooting you in place) weapon animations not following through (the Insect glaive being the absolute worst) and actual response time between the game and controller is off by literal seconds sometimes (attack press and a full 2 second lag for the attack to happen). These problems tank the entire package for me.

    Yet i've increased my score from it's prior (4) to a (7). Why you may ask? Well, the rest of the game is quite good...if you've ever played a MMORPG in the past, in particular WoW. Quests, collecting, grinding, team-ups, item rewards, exploration--it's all here. Not only that, but the game looks really good (On 4K/HDR). The music is catchy as is the sound effects coming from the monsters. When a Rathian comes swooping down out-of-nowhere roaring and slamming into the midst of a group, makes me remember my days in Skyrim when a dragon world do the similar.

    Crafting is enjoyable...if not a bit stilted. I may change this one way or another down the line as i'm still working through the "story" and everything is not unlocked yet.

    It's been fun for the time being--but that's the thing about this game for me: the time being. The mark a great game for me is just how much effort and time am I going to invest in the game. How long is it really going to keep me in it while other things come around to garner my interest? And the truth is; it just doesn't have enough to keep me going.

    There's this pesky problem going through the industry right now: task-centric progression. There is a focus on constantly putting daily chores in the face of players, or building content that is nothing but a hair-thin line of gratifying accomplishments that slowly move upwards, but plateau quickly and expect retention for doing the same thing over and over and over. No depth, just grind/kill/craft/repeat. All that would be just fine....if there was an escalation of both the player (and their overall powerful gear and options) and enemy (new choices, not skin versions of the same monsters over and over). That gets boring.

    The argument is that Monster Hunter has always been this, and I'd say yes--but it sure as hell has been refined into a product in the extreme. I want more from my games. Perhaps they add more with massive DLC, but at the base, it's pretty trivial.    … Expand

    Monster Hunter World is one of the best co-op Action-RPG games of recent years. The game is flawless, in 200+ hours I have encountered zero bugs or glitches. Do yourself a favor and pick it up if you haven't already. This is the most accessible Monster Hunter to date, an absolute blast.

    This is my first Monster Hunter game and I absolutely love it. The combat in this game is awesome. I love the way the armour looks, especially high rank armour. However the monsters aren't too varied, theres a few unique ones but most are dragons, dinosaurs, or reptile looking.

I have almost 200 hours in already (about 3 weeks in). There is so much depth to the game that every aspect is entertaining. I have been playing MH since 3U on the 3DS and Wii U, and this is by far the best game in the series. I have almost 200 hours in already (about 3 weeks in). There is so much depth to the game that every aspect is entertaining. There are some things I really want to see still and I fully expect will be implemented. Among those transmogging gear and more monsters need to be added and most certainly will be. This game deserves game of the year, I don't think any game will come close in terms of over all quality for a very long time. I am not giving it a perfect score for a couple of reasons. It took them nearly a month to fix the multiplayer connectivity issues (something that would have been solved if they had a beta on Xbox as well). Also all the cosmetic exclusives they keep giving Sony is a bit insulting considering the Xbox One X is a far superior piece of hardware and deserves that love as well.     - Overwhelming amount of stuff to do - for me it gets rather repetitive as majority of the content is 'kill this monster', 'fetch this stuff' kind of quests
    - A bit tedious monster fights. The big monsters sure offer some challenge and at first fights feel big and epic... for a while. Fights would be a lot more enjoyable if every big monster wouldn't always run away many times. I'd rather spend 10 minutes fighting a stationary hard boss instead of chasing a monster around the map for 20 minutes. I wouldn't even mind if some monsters did that occasionally but it happens every single time.

    I'm far from completing the game but so far the story has been rather dull. Also I didn't really find any of the melee weapons fun to play but luckily there were bows to save the day. Melee weapons focus on performing different combos. These combos do look cool but they also tend to miss a lot because some monsters are constantly moving. And don't get me wrong, despite I've been pointing out a lot of the things I haven't liked, I still do enjoy the game and I'll surely explore the game further.

    TL;DR:
    Combat oriented game set in a beautiful continent. The story is a bit lacking but there will be a lot to explore and collect which adds to the depth of the game. Fighting those big bad monsters can be anything between fun and frustratingly tedious.    … Expand

    Monster Hunter World. (MHW) Is a excellent instalment of the franchise. With a beautiful world, plenty of secrets, overwhelming amount of content, marvelous choice for Co-op with friends, free DLC, nomicro-transactions , and a fun learning curve. It's a breath of fresh air for 2018. You'll be playing this all year.

    There's no denying this game is quality, and it feels good to play. But elements of the combat feel clunky at times. This is disappointing especially considering that monster hunters previous older games have all felt very precise and accurate. Other than this and the mildly irritating partner you have to team up with the games a triumph and I can't wait to grind through the endgame content.

    What is MWH world? In my opinion this game is a multiplayer boss fighting game. While you can play on your own, killing monsters alone is much more tedious, especially since there is little plot to this game. So, in what ways is well executed and where does it fail?

    -Gameplay is good. It is very satisfying to battle huge monsters., which is the main reason why I kept playing the game. It is simple - attack, doge, heal - however, despite the simplicity of the base mechanism, the weapon and item diversity is good enough to give it some depth.

    -Art direction is good. The graphics are not groundbreaking, but they are good enough and the scenery is beautiful. There are some issues which I find annoying and that have no place in this day and age. The main graphical problem to me is what armor pieces and weapons are not "solid". What I mean with this is, for example if your armor has a cape, some of your weapons on your back will go trough the cape, or your helmet will go through your weapons, or your boot will go through you waist-cloth, etc. This is also through for the corpses of the monsters you leave behind, you can just walk though them. To me this somewhat breaks the immersion of the game and is something which I have not seen in a while.

    -Monster diversity is awful. While at first glance it may seem that there is a great deal of monster diversity in the game, there really isn't. In terms of gameplay small monsters are pointless. They serve no purpose, they have boring, simple attack patterns, and for the most part you will ignore the couple of small monsters in each region. While you will not ignore the large monsters, unfortunately these also suffer from lack of diversity. While there are several large monsters, sadly their attack patters are very similar, with the only thing changing being their element. In terms of tactics you will not have to change anything to hunt different monsters, which makes the game repetitive. Tied to that, quest are essentially always the same: hunt a monster. Ultimately, this makes the world feel empty.

    -There are very few dungeons, and they are not procedurally generated. This makes the tracking mechanic almost pointless since after a while you will know where everything is. Due to the small number of dungeons, this also means you will be visiting the same places over and over again, which is another feature that makes this game repetitive.

    -Multiplayer system is awful- To me this is where the game fails the most. I often fail to join other players' quests, sometimes have to try several dozen times to join a quest, any quest. Worst of all is that you leave the quest screen every time you fail to join a quest, resetting you search criteria. It is a shame that there isn't a matchmaking system, as this is quite frustrating.

    All in all, MWH is a good game with some interesting aspects, but also failing in some key aspects. It is fun to play and somewhat addicting so definitely worth a shot, however IMO in not worth all the praise it's been getting.    … Expand

    This game rules and im so glad Capcom came to their senses and made a new game for everyone to enjoy, not just the Nintendo crowd. It is the equivalent of a "loot shooter, but so much more awesome.

    To see how far this series has come from the PS2 days is nothing short of breath taking.

    I couldn't recommended it enough if you're into that genre of game.

    If you're a veteran, you'll enjoy it a ton. If you're new to the series, it's definitely worth giving a shot, especially once it starts going on sale/you find copies used.    … Expand

    Graficamente es espectacular, y aunque ya no hay tiempos de carga como en las otras versiones, los mundos son pequeños, hay gran variedad de armas cada una muy diferente entre si, armaduras con sus extras en proteccion al fuego, hielo etc...pero creo que es un juego pensado para jugar con otras personas en cooperativo sino algunos monstruos se te atragantaran.

I've spent nearly 400 hours on every dark souls, I love the series but the gameplay is not even comparable. I suggest watching youtube tutorials to learn the weapon types. There is a weapon for everyone and each weapon could be it's own game. Again, this game is a masterpiece but it won't hold your hand. The people leaving bad reviews either bought the game expecting a dark souls or just aren't good and think the gameplay is clunky. If you are going to buy the game do the research. You will get one of the best gaming experiences of your life. Also, the multiplayer is not broken. If you can't even figure out multiplayer you have no business buying the game. That was one of their big selling points in that they have an immersive world where if two of the major monsters meet there will be some epic clash. I have had occasions where two bosses literally touch each other and nothing happened. I was just waiting for some big fight, but alas not a dang thing happened. Maybe it's just bad luck on my part, but still it would be nice to see a full on battle royale.

    Last but not least, the story is wishy washy, but this is Monster Hunter so not to much on well flushed out stories anywho so no big complaints.

    No for the good stuff. The combat is fairly good. With the ability to use the environment to your benefit in tons if different ways is very satisfying. The monster attacks are well played out yet become predictable after multiple hunts, but that's the whole point of the game. The crafting system is easy yet extremely diverse with the ability to craft multiple tools, armor, and weapons with monster parts and collectible items. The maps themselves literally are multilayered with lots to explore and find with many different side quests and missions to fill in those storyline gaps. Also, no f'in microtransactions. Thank you.

    Now this game is a grind game. You have to hunt a monster multiple times to get the armor/weapon you want. Some games hand you stuff on a silver platter. This is not one of those. It's fairly difficult (yet nowhere near as difficult as Souls) and challenges your skills at certain intervals in the game. Just a bit of advice, do the capture missions for monster parts.

    All in all, this will be a A or A+ game after they fixed the multiplayer.    … Expand

I have logged 70 hours already and only have hit the halfway mark. Once you think you are done, there is more to come with new monsters.     When you finally get hunting the actual process is excellent. You find tracks, you wipe mucus from walls which gets you points towards a research bar. Once the bar has filled enough then the luminous tracker flies start to do their thing and lead you to the prey. Along the way though you might come across other monsters wandering around and it's up to you whether you take them on or not. So far, so good.

    But once you find the monster this is where things go bad. For all the tactics and brilliance of the RPG side the combat boils down to button-bashing. I also come back to my opening statement of the lack of a jump button; one of the main ways to attack a monster is to get on it's back and start stabbing away but the problem here is there is no way to actually jump. To be able to get on a back you have to manoeuvre the monster near a ledge and then "hope" you jump off the ledge toward the monster, it's more luck than judgement if this happens. Add in the lack of a health bar on the animals and you're at times literally stabbing in the dark.

    To sum up: a great game spoiled by the combat system.    … Expand

If anything the fighting in this game is more like the combat in Witcher 3 not Dark Souls. And as anybody knows, the combat in Witcher 3 was its weak point: it made up for it with great questing and story. Monster Hunter World has non-existing questing and story, so all you are left with is TERRIBLE combat and unfulfilled ideas behind the strategy options: the HORRIBLE execution on the fighting made the deeper strategy irrelevant. Too bad, but I would recommend skipping this game. And that goes for single player I won't even take extra points away for the multiplayer being flat out broken. That is a small point. The fighting being fundamentally TERRIBLE makes this game just not enjoyable.… Expand

    I felt like I was the monster… but the fact this game evoked that kind of emotion for me means that theres something special here… the world of monster hunter feels alive and real.. I felt immersed tracking down my targets…
    The experience youll have with this game is going to be completely dependent on how you choose to play…
    If you play solo, this game is basically a boss rush dark souls with a cat companion that will aid you in battle and heal you, and if you play with friends it’s a destiny feeling game
    The game starts out giving you 1 of every weapon type so you can find the right one for you.. and then build your character around it.. this is a decision that’s crucial you make early on if youre not the grind type…
    But basically you can investigate the worlds, gather materials to craft potions antidotes and possibly ammo, slay monsters and pick bone piles for parts to craft better armour and weapos for both you and your companion, do side quests for rewards or you can straight up stick to the story which will have you on essentially a boss rush mode quest of monster contract after monster contract…
    If you have a crew youll have a decently enjoyable and addictive experience here…
    When you start am assignment you can go in solo or with a party of up to 4 players,
    You then follow scout flies to tracks that will lead you to your target, and you can pick up items along your way for crafting
    and if you go in alone, once you track down your target, you have the option to shoot an sos flare which will bring in random players to help you…
    However no matter how you play, solo or with friends… you only have 4 lives to kill this monster.. but heres where my annoyances with this game comes in.. everything is constantly being timed…
    I actually love that there are only 3 continues allowed… but the timer on literally everything you do just makes this game feel frustrating.. the most of which is the 30 second timer that starts once the monster is slain… if you die and youre running back to your team and they kill the monster before you get back.. congrats.. you don’t get to skin it for its materials…even if youre the one that did most of the work taking it down, it doesn’t matter… if youre not back in 30 seconds you get nothing but the rewards for completing the task… its annoying that the game doesn’t let you choose when to leave after completion…
    Even more annoying is that even the expeditions which is essentially the games free roam mode where youre free to hunt and grind for whatever materials you want with infinite lives is secretly timed as well… I got closed to slaying some dragon and I get a warning that its about to leave soon… then a message pops up that it got away and I felt like I completely wasted my time…
    But despite these massive annoyances I had with this game, I just couldn’t walk away…
    The fights all feel so different and so engaging, you can trap monsters, you can luer them into turf wars with other monsters, its amazing to think back to a previous battle and realize that that battle was in the same game.. it feels like a distant memory.. and the experience felt so unique.. but it was all in this same world…
    its almost magic how great this game does at mixing up basically the same loop of over come the odds and slay this beast… the battles will take you to new parts of the map, youll deal with new challenges and attack patterns
    But its no easy feat…
    The dark souls comparisons are made not only because battles are so tough but because of the combat feeling.. its stiff.. its slow… youre juggling your stamina and attacks, youre breaking to sharpen your sword, youre fleeing for new materials.. but one thing the souls games do that I with this game did was show a health bar
    the game manages to give you that one more try feeling.. but not nearly as strong as it would if you actually could see the progress you were making.. sure youll cut of tails and sometimes they’ll limp away
    But I still had no clue if I was close or not.. if I could keep trying and do it on my own or if I needed to call in for help..
    This may seem like a little thing, but I feel this small addition could push this game to the next level.. at least for me, as in its current state bosses just feel ridiciously spongy
    And in general the feeling of a lack of progression is the negative aspect that sticks out the most for this game..

I picked this up because of all the amazing reviews it has been getting and while the game is extremely pretty and while its world is very enticing, it really just hasn't pulled me in just yet. I'm still finding myself testing my own patience as I'm waiting for the game to really hook me. I have a number of issues with it starting off. The first obviously being that it really doesn't hook ya within the first hour which to me is really important in a game. I myself am patient enough to where I can put a couple hours into a game in order to let it fully sink in but there are many gamers out there who might play through the first hour of this and put it aside. The reason is because it starts out stereotypically like so many other games of its type, but honestly doesn't feel super special. You are thrust right into a partnership/under the care of a stereotypically annoying young female adventurer type character that to me is extremely off putting. I've been asking myself, "do I really have to deal with her the whole game?" She seems to be the person who I will be accepting quests through and reporting to, which is unfortunate. But that's something I can probably get over. Another issue I found was some pretty extreme clipping as I attempted to interact with some of the passive beasts roaming around the first landscape you run across. As I approached them my character actually walked right through them. Upon messing around with this I discovered that it only occurred when I walked up to it from a certain angle, but this is just super sloppy and really pulled me out of the game world. A review I read claimed that the world had a realistic ecosystem all its own and was a world that you felt like you could live in according to IGN but this first impression was anything but that. This first tiny taste at exploration felt like so many other games I've played before but once I got to the first hub which occurs very early in the gameplay I began to see the depth of the systems at play. This is where I started saying "hmmmm" and thinking that it could be something I might get into. But then I equipped my first weapon. And was flabbergasted at just how disproportionately BIG these weapons are compared to my character's body. Maybe there are some truly enormous beasts to fight or something as the game suggests pretty early on, but looking at all the weapons that are available to you at the beginning of the game I found myself laughing at the absurdly exaggerated size of them all. It's really off putting and pulled me out of the immersion quite a bit. Needless to say I will be sticking with swords and shields although even this simple combo just looks ridiculously large on my character, it's silly. This will take some getting used to. Then came my first quest and here is where I was like "okay this is where it has to hook me. Combat must be great, there must be some reason why this is getting rave reviews." But I fought my first group of mobs and was like "meh." The combat consists of one attack button, at least seemingly so, and one defense button. Which I mashed back and forth until I killed all the mobs. There wasn't that satisfying connect when I nailed a creature, it just felt very blah compared to other action rpgs I've played. But this was literally the first encounter so I cannot by any means judge the combat of the entire game based on this, against just a FIRST IMPRESSION. And that's about as far as I got. The game is absolutely beautiful with some stunning backdrops. I loved seeing the character I created in action. The controls are pretty fluid and it feels fun just to run around, roll around, jump off ledges, claw your way through jungle roots and climb surfaces. And I will say that right off the bat you see some pretty jaw droppingly large and menacing monsters that foreshadow what is to come. Despite all my complaints I still feel a pull to start up my Xbox even as I'm typing this and give it another whirl, probably will even make a new character this time. There is something, I dunno what yet, that draws me into playing the game again. I do however feel that this is a game for a certain audience. Many of the game's aspects are just silly and might put some players off, like the cat creature you have as a companion during solo play, and the super exaggerated weapons, but I'm a pretty open minded guy so I'll be playing more despite my complaints. Hopefully will be able to more fully review the game after I've dived in a little more, and who knows my impression might be totally different!     So if you want to play Monster Hunter World and don't have a basic understanding of the game, then I'll give a quick summary. Monster Hunter is a game where you basically get to hunt dragons, dinosaurs, and other varieties of creatures that are basically known as you guessed it, monsters. By hunting these monsters you have to also use various items to your advantage and f*ck those monsters up. I'll be telling why you should be buying this game and what it does right.

    GAMEPLAY: The gameplay of monster hunter is what it mainly focuses on and does an incredible job of doing that. I've seen negative reviews saying that "You just go to an area and kill a monster and do it again and again and it runs away a lot." Some of these people have played not even through the full game but mostly only an hour or two of the game putting up their review. I can disprove this.

    Now as you know that people say you just hunt a monster and do it again but it's not just about hunting it. It's about how you hunt it and the monster you are hunting yourself. Let me show you two great examples what makes the gameplay great!

    SCOUT FLIES/TRACKING: While you are in the game you are not just running around areas trying to find a monster. What this game does from other Monster Hunters is that it adds that features to track the monsters. In older games, you have to go to certain areas of the map sometimes just running around everywhere until you spot the monster you are looking for. In this game, you are finding tracks to track the monster that you are looking for, Different from paintballs where you throw it on a monster and it tracks it until it wears off. You get these tracking devices called scout flies. Scout flies are basically what they are. Once you found enough evidence from the tracks that you found they will lead you straight to the monster and once you find the monster you can track it forever until you kill it. This is what I think is a unique feature of the game and makes you feel like that you are hunting the monster.

    THE MONSTER: Now this is the part where I wanted to get to. Each monster has unique was to attack and defend itself and all of their attacks differentiate from each other. In the older monster hunter games, you would mostly be given attacks that don't really differentiate from others and you are most of the time given the dame attacks from other monsters that you see other monsters use. In Monster Hunter World every attack is different and by seeing these attacks you have to learn how to dodge them and overcome them so you can learn more about your target and get their sweet gear which you can use to make cool gear and you can do it again and again and it never gets old which makes the grinding extremely fun.

    WEAPONS & ARMOR: Now after killing these monsters you get to make gear that not only makes you look cool but also improves you and your hunter's attributes o hunt bigger and crazier monsters. The armor is basically what I said a sentence earlier where it better improves your health and attributes; but let us now get to the cool part, the weapons.The weapons are what make monster hunter a cool game. You have over 13 or 14 weapon types and I fell in love with most of them due to their unique combos and mechanics. Which can stir up the game and can do some massive damage.

    They also try to do a more interesting story with the series and I can say that they did a good job at making it interesting. Now since I have finished what is good about it; I can now say what is wrong with it because not every game is perfect.

    Now here is what I have to say...the multiplayer sucks d*ck. The only problem that they have is multiplayer and I can agree with most players on that. You can't even join matchmaking and if you invite someone to your lobby you can't see or interact with them and when you actually do start a quest you disconnect from the quest after a few minutes or they disconnect and you have to face it alone or you have to face it with fewer people which will make it more of a challenge. You see I wouldn't have much of a problem with this except that they wanted to focus on the multilayer feature because that's what people liked about the game. But if the servers are bad and you can't joi anyone then focusing on multiplayer is not going to be a good thing which can ruin the experience and your fun. It's also a singleplayer game too so it's not that chaotic of a problem.

    SUMMARY: Overall this is an outstanding game with great gameplay and interesting story with unique characters and monsters that will make you keep grinding the game and have a big amount of fun while playing it. Besides the only problem being multiplayer, playing in singleplayer is still a blast. 9.6/10    … Expand

    As far as RPG’s go Monster Hunter: World is one of the best I’ve ever played. I have been waiting for this game and sometimes game’s you wait for don’t always fulfill your lofty expectations, but that’s not the case here because it reaches my expectations and some. The gameplay has lots of little intricate mechanics in play at all times and when they combine together they create a veryAs far as RPG’s go Monster Hunter: World is one of the best I’ve ever played. The world in which these mechanics take place in is absolutely fantastic. There is plenty for you to do and explore on the map and the best thing is that the world felt alive at all times. The content which is extremely important in an RPG is packed to the brim in this game and without a doubt it will keep you occupied for month’s to come. Without a doubt the crux of the game is the monsters that you come to face and thankfully they’ve managed to get this aspect spot on. Each monster has it’s own strengths and weaknesses and the clever design of each monster makes battling them both exciting and challenging at the same time. I will say though that the extreme challenge may put some people off at times, but if you come prepared at all times then you will keep the frustration at bay. I did find myself getting frustrated from time to time, but thankfully that was never down to the combat that’s present in the game. The combat feels great and there are a number of different weapons for you try out and the best thing is that each weapon feels different so that keeps things fresh and interesting throughout. The presentation side of the game is something that I was a massive fan of, especially when it came to the visuals. The graphics look awesome at times and the amount of detail that’s present is absolutely fantastic. The sound design whilst not as good as the visuals is still very well done and it does more than enough to keep the immersion levels high. At the end of the day Monster Hunter: World has pretty much created a perfect experience and in my opinion it will be in for a shout of being game of the year this year. Every little detail in the game has had a lot of love and effort put into it and this makes the game stand out in a very big way and without a doubt this game gets a massive recommendation from me and if you like RPG’s then this game is an absolute must buy.… Expand

    First of all, I have been playing Monster Hunter since Tri came out. I have followed the series throughout the years and the series has only gotten better. Compared to the previous games MH World has completely revolutionized the Monster Hunter series. However, i was proved wrong, there are so many things! And you can abduct them and throw them in your home as well! The massive, polished map this game provides completely blew me away.

    Throughout the series, combat has gotten more fluid (especially in MH Generations) but it always remained a little clunky. The combat in this game has greatly improved (Ignoring the fact that the controls are complete ass and you can't change them). Once you get used to the controls, the combat seems a lot more smooth, making it satisfying to land devastating combos on a massive wyvern yearning for your blood. The Great Sword, which used to feel kinda clunky is a lot more fluid, with multiple combos that flow well into each other, making you feel bad ass after landing a fully charged combo on a monsters tail. The bow has changed as well. Although undermined by the newly added slinger, the bow still proves to be a fun weapon (noticed they made it more mobile and powerful). However, the guns are so boring, there is nothing special about them. They feel clunky, slow and underpowered. Especially the heavy bow gun, been like this since the beginning. But this is just an opinion, you might take a liking to the bow gun.

    For all you Monster Hunter fans out there, this is a must buy. However, for players that search for an immersive story that provides many hours of entertainment, you will be somewhat disappointed. The game's story is like an ocean that's one foot deep. When you open the game, you are kinda thrown into the story with barely any context and you chase some big dragon (won't reveal more than that). If story is what you are looking for, turn away. This game is mainly based on hunting monsters, not the story behind them.

    Some players are saying that the combat is sluggish, weapons feel clunky, and it's for little kids??? For new players, combat will definitely feel a little sluggish as you mindlessly spam two buttons for the first few hours. But you will soon discover that the combat is extremely complicated, providing a huge learning curve. There are many combos that flow into each other with ease if done correctly. If combos are done incorrectly you get punished, leaving you completely open to monsters. Some players don't like this because they like to swing a greatsword around at the speed of sound with no consequences. Once you get the hang of these combos you will feel like a bad ass monster hunter. For some reason, I have been noticing reviews stating that the game is for little kids. I must admit, the game does have some weird Japanese **** that appeals to its main fan base. But as soon as you have a monster eat you out like an Oreo you realize that this game ain't cute at all. This is real **** and you're gonna piss your pants when you fight the final boss, trust me.

    So far, I have been very impressed with the game. However, I have noticed, if you pay some attention, on the Xbox One, the game is kinda blurry (thought I was going blind for a second). Not to much of an issue, only makes me more hyped for the PC version. You probably won't notice unless you look really hard as well. I still can't get over how bad the controls are. Hopefully, they do something about that.

    The biggest thing about this game is that they decided not to ruin the game with pay-to-win content, loot boxes and cosmetic bull****. Gotta respect that decision. A company that actually listens to its players.

    This game is about progression; in terms of armor and weapons, but also in terms of your skill as a player. You have 14 weapons to choose from and each requires some level of practice to master them. If you dont like one, then move to another and try that. It will be wildly different. Also weapons in multiplayer require more skill in order to not hit or buff your squad. So it all takes practice.

    This game rewards those you want to plan ahead, but now with the tent at the campsite, it no longer penalizes those that forget something!    … Expand

There is so much diversity and depth in the weapons and environments and in the systems of the game that it can be a little overwhelming at first, but it’s worth every bit of time it takes to master them.     i was very excited for this game, but unfortunately the multiplayer for xbox seems to be completely broken. i bought it to play with friends however i can't even connect to their sessions most of the time... do yourself a favor and don't buy this.

    I took off points for technical implementation. On Xbox 1 X, running at 4k, I shouldn't have to choose between resolution/framerate/graphics (there's an in-game toggle that is "exclusive" to X1X). The game already looks like a PS3 game, and it has no excuse of running like a game from 2006 either. Framerate drops constantly if you are running in Resolution mode, and graphics mode makes no difference. Framerate makes everything extremely hideous.

    I know Japan doesn't give a damn about graphics, and this game has more personality than most... but still. And this is supposed to be "Xbox 1 X Enhanced" title and yet it performs atrociously.

    I ended up running it in "graphics" mode because it seems to be the middle ground between enjoyable framerate and decent visuals.    … Expand

    The game starts with a fairly nice character creator, a little awkward and fiddly with a controller. Lots of options, the game was looking promising. You even had the opportunity to change the 'background' so you can see what your character looks like in different light sources.

    Then the game starts. Eugh.

    1) I don't think it's fair to criticize the logic of games when they are trying to tell a story, but I just found this quite annoying: You are on a ship, bound for the New World. You've obviously been sailing for a long long time (unless the New World is just down the road). And you are 10 minutes from docking at the island... So of COURSE, this is the time that the passengers all get together and introduce themselves, instead of getting ready to disembark.

    2) The first character you meet is supposed to be an "A-list hunter", but is, alas, voiced by a dude-bro. The voice in no way gives you the impression that he is a big bad monster hunter. He sounds like he should be eating pizza, and hanging out with Michelangelo and Raphael in a sewer.

    3) Everything goes to hell as we hit an 'object' and this is when my brand new xbox starts throwing up solid walls of color instead of sea-spray and smoke.

    4) Finally I see my mute character in some cut scenes... And he vaguely resembles the character I just made. A low-res version, bordering on The Old Republic art style. Also, he's a mouth breather with a botox face. Nothing moves in his face.

    5) After an escape from the volcano monster, I realize that I'm actually supposed to be climbing a vertical cliff, and not scrabbling along the ground. My legs are just randomly swimming in the air as I 'climb'

    6) Eventually we land on the island, and the super impressive graphics are really seen for the first time... If that first time were 2005. The graphics are strangely bland and washed out, except for the cutscenes, and nothing impressive (i.e. nothing like those screenshots with the perfectly detailed monster hides).

    7) Your companion has an annoying high pitched perky voice that grated after the first 30 seconds... Can't wait for the rest of the game.

    8) We find the main camp and meet the cliches. They only voice the first words of each sentence, the rest is text. Some just grunt (i.e. no translation needed).

    9) The inventory section where you choose you weapons from the chest is hideous, and I really hope they didn't pay a designer for this.

    10) Ah, the combat tutorial! Clearly this was added at the last minute. A cave with a couple of barrels to hit, and then the whole screen is covered in "Right Right Right HOLD for stunning attack" etc etc. All the moves are just there on the screen the whole time as you jump around the screen, almost unable to see yourself with all the icons and text.

    11) Let's go hunt a monster! Oh, they are all running away. I've found their nest, and I'm doing the combos, and my character is just blindly flailing around hitting everything around him.

    I just gave up after a few hours and traded the game in.

    Imagine the Witcher 3, but with swords the size of VW Beetle, and voiced by the people that make cartoons for 1 year old children "YELLOW, can you say YELLOW? Say YELLOW with me!", and not actually fun to play, and with a UI and inventory that makes Mass Effect Andromeda's look sophisticated.    … Expand

The monster hunter series has always been simultaneously cheerful, whimsical and almost playful while throwing you into the gaping jaws of massive behemoths that will rip you limb from limb. This game isn't the grim-dark saga that mostA masterfully crafted hunting experience that doesn't sacrifice it's humor, soul or high standards of difficulty to appease casual western audiences. The monster hunter series has always been simultaneously cheerful, whimsical and almost playful while throwing you into the gaping jaws of massive behemoths that will rip you limb from limb. This game isn't the grim-dark saga that most western audiences may have come to expect but when you get cornered by a dragon you can't hope to defeat, the fear you will feel will be palpable and you will feel smaller than you ever thought you could outside of a FromSoftware title.

    But this is intentional, as the themes of this series have always been; overcoming challenges, becoming truly skilled and actually being a badass. You will start by getting decimated by a horrifying beast only to come back hours later wearing the skins of your previous kills to slaughter that same beast you used to fear. This character progression isn't told through cut-scenes; it happens directly to you, the player. The rewarding, empowering sensation is one that has to be felt to understand and is addictive by nature which is why these games are designed to be played for ages.

    If you want to take a dive into a profoundly deep game that will keep you coming back for hundreds and hundreds of hours, then this game is absolutely for you. If you take the time to learn how the game systems work and how the mechanics impact the gameplay and monster battles you will find a level of complexity and depth that is almost without equal. This game feels alive, the environments are hostile and the monsters will not pull their punches. But if you want to experience an action rpg with heart, soul and depth then look no further because this is amazing time to be a monster hunter.    … Expand

    Monster Hunter: World captures that feel of hunting, and despite its technical quirks and poor design decisions, if you've got a group of friends to play with it comes highly recommended. If you're running solo, you might be better waiting for a sale.
