Barring some technical issues causing the odd crash or hard lock, for the most part, the core of the game works well. There is definitely enjoyment to be had however, as all artistic aspects of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom are beautiful, and the combat and platforming mechanics are solid.

Some people will absolutely love Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, and others will be enraged by it. I sit somewhere in the middle – I really like it, but its flaws have soured my experience with it.

The world in which the game takes place feels alive in all areas and this makes exploring not only fun but rewarding as well. There’s a lot of variety present in the gameplay which in turn, means the gameplay stayed fresh and interesting from beginning to the end.
The story is packed full of charm and that’s mainly because each character has been created to feel important culminating in a wonderful adventure. In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get your hands on and I’m sure fans of the series will be satisfied with what’s new to offer here. The difficulty curve can be a little unforgiving at times which could make an unexperienced platform player frustrated at times. Technically the game suffers with few issues and thankfully none of these issues hold the game back for what it truly is. Wonder Boy delivered a lot of enjoyment when I was younger and it’s successor Monster Boy captured the feel of Wonder Boy last year which in turn brought the series to life again. As you can imagine then I was very eager to get my hands on Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and thankfully I’m pleased to say that it exceeded my expectations as a classic gamer. From the moment I started the game I knew I was going to enjoy it and it remained enjoyable all the way through thanks to the varied and addictive gameplay style it offers. It's a game full of beauty and a world that has you charmed throughout. This wasn’t the only thing that was charming, because you get a story that is wonderful and full of characters that actually feel like they matter. At the end of the day then Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is definitely a new addition to my GOTY category and it manages to excel in several areas culminating in a fun and unforgettable adventure. Definitely 2 thumbs up!

I think if they keep this up, the company and franchise could see a massive break through in less than two years. Full Review »
