Simply put, I love Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, so much so that is has made my list of games that I would recommend it to people as must-play for those that are fans of the platforming genre. The art, the music, the gameplay and the overall challenge found here are all top notch, and in my opinion it is a game that reaches perfection in this genre. I am personally hoping we will see a continuation in the series and how it could grow into even more.

The game is both playful and challenging, encouraging you to overcome the obstacles before you and keep the story moving. The franchise may have been overshadowed back in the day, but Monster Boy deserves to be up in the rarefied air primarily populated by Italian plumbers with a fondness for the color red.

Playing The Cursed Kingdom really makes me want to check out the previous games in the series. It was so refreshing to see a game like this, especially one that plays and looks as great as it does. Any fan of 2D action games should pick this game up without question, and don’t worry if you’ve never played this series before, I was able to enjoy it fully with absolutely no knowledge of it. This is one newer game that harkens back to the old days that does it well and will be remembered for a nice long while.

A compelling, varied and challenging action platformer, with a great design and highly satisfying. A must buy for lovers of platformers and metroidvania games.

Monster Boy is classic adventure platforming action, but done with such style and panache that it outshines many recent examples of the genre. There’s a brilliantly paced difficulty curve, with new powers, characters and items dispensed at just the right moments. Combat is standard, but intelligent use of the aforementioned aspects means it never gets tiresome or frustrating. It helps that the game looks and sounds sensational. This, is a must have.

Monster Boy is a wonderful adventure. It’s a great way to bring back the Wonder Boy essence and adapt it to new trends, while still making it feel classic and nostalgic. If you enjoy old-school action platforms, you cannot miss it.

A refreshing alternative to the darker platformers of the last few years.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom not only pays faithful homage to Wonder Boy, particularly The Dragon's Trap, but by refining the solid foundations of its spiritual predecessors with modern affordances, it becomes a rich platforming adventure in its own right.

Barring some technical issues causing the odd crash or hard lock, for the most part, the core of the game works well. There is definitely enjoyment to be had however, as all artistic aspects of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom are beautiful, and the combat and platforming mechanics are solid.

Some people will absolutely love Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, and others will be enraged by it. I sit somewhere in the middle – I really like it, but its flaws have soured my experience with it.

The world in which the game takes place feels alive in all areas and this makes exploring not only fun but rewarding as well. There’s a lot of variety present in the gameplay which in turn, means the gameplay stayed fresh and interesting from beginning to the end.
The story is packed full of charm and that’s mainly because each character has been created to feel important culminating in a wonderful adventure. In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get your hands on and I’m sure fans of the series will be satisfied with what’s new to offer here. The difficulty curve can be a little unforgiving at times which could make an unexperienced platform player frustrated at times. Technically the game suffers with few issues and thankfully none of these issues hold the game back for what it truly is. Wonder Boy delivered a lot of enjoyment when I was younger and it’s successor Monster Boy captured the feel of Wonder Boy last year which in turn brought the series to life again. As you can imagine then I was very eager to get my hands on Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and thankfully I’m pleased to say that it exceeded my expectations as a classic gamer. From the moment I started the game I knew I was going to enjoy it and it remained enjoyable all the way through thanks to the varied and addictive gameplay style it offers. It's a game full of beauty and a world that has you charmed throughout. This wasn’t the only thing that was charming, because you get a story that is wonderful and full of characters that actually feel like they matter. At the end of the day then Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is definitely a new addition to my GOTY category and it manages to excel in several areas culminating in a fun and unforgettable adventure. Definitely 2 thumbs up!
