I must admit that I didn’t expect the game to have as many problems as it does and this really takes away from anything that is good about the game. The technichal issues in the game can cause you some real problems and you forget about having fun because of this, which is a real shame. Unfortunately the controls don’t do much better and you will be finding yourself getting very frustrated with them, which is a shame because I thought the puzzles in the game were very good but they just end up getting bogged down by the poor controls. The story in the game was something that I enjoyed and I found it to be quite unique, but the ending definitely spoils it. The boss battles at the end feel out of place and are annoying as hell and in a way they undo all of the previous good things about the story. Something that really surprised me about the game was the lack of content it has. I must admit that I was expecting a lot more in terms of content and that was mainly down to its price tag, so to say that the game is overpriced is a massive understatement. The presentation side of the game whilst not perfect is something that tickled my fancy. The visuals are something that I especially enjoyed and I felt that they connected with the gameplay very well. At the end of the day Hello Neighbor disappointed me a great deal and without a doubt I was hoping for much more from the game. It’s riddled with problems throughout and in its current state I would recommend that you stay well clear of this game, but unfortunately I don’t think a patch or two will sort out enough and the underlying problems will still remain. If you were looking forward to Hello Neighbor then I think you will be very disappointed with the final outcome, and when you combine the game’s problems with its high price tag then you get a game that really doesn’t offer you a reason to buy it, which is a shame.

Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror puzzle game where you play a kid that peeks inside your neighbors window to see him locking up some door, and of course you want to see what’s going on inside..
Things are changed up a bit in this newer release of the game...
The original version there were tons of exploits for you to be able to take shortcuts and speed through parts of this game...
some exploits do exist but a few have been fixed such as the first level having a satellite dish in front of the area that everyone was jumping to and basically skipping most of the first act… however I feel the game is mostly to blame for this…
This game will take you 6 to 7 hours to go through without shortcuts or knowing locations of the keys…
The story takes place across 3 acts and one finale.. Your goal is to essentially find items and keys to help you get to new locations in an area... things start out decently simple and get more convoluted as you go one..
For some reason players and critics alike don’t really seem to like this game but I feel like it’s actually pretty neat...
there’s an interesting story here told through cut scenes and the occasional flash back moments when you die too many times, you’re getting the story of both you and your neighbor...
who by the way is doing all he can to ensure you don’t succeed in collecting these items and keys or solving the puzzles in his yard and basement..
This feels very much like an old school early 2000s game with a modern polish...
Not to say this game is polished... it has its bugs glitches and hiccups, but for what it is its pretty solid…
you’re free to explore the area completely however it’s up to you to figure out how it get into locked doors or find windows to climb through,
This old school feel and freedom is the games downfall as well..
This game explains nothing to you, it shows you a key in an attic and just lets you go... how are you going to get it… you have to figure things out on your own and for that reason many players will accidentally break the game and miss parts of it, hello neighbor does a really poor job of leading the player along or hinting towards solutions, this is what makes the game so special but what also makes it so frustrating…
This isn’t the game’s biggest problem though...
That lies in the hands of the over used neighbor...
at first dealing with this neighbor is terrifying... He means almost certain death until you figure out how to dodge and set up escape routes in case he spots you... but the problem is at least during the house sections of the game... he’s seemingly everywhere...
I’m not sure if he’s spawned into areas, but I’m almost certain he is… this means you never really get a moment away from him and therefor the game never allows tension to build... Its constant inch towards progress get caught rinse and repeat… instead of steak around his home, find out what’s going on. What you need to deal with or figure out to unlock the next part of this map, hide when he gets near and then goes back to his set path....
I think this is key to great stealth…
Sure you can disrupt paths... but the enemy should always return to their set paths and have a bit of predictability to allow the player to feel they are outsmarting the enemy rather than constant distract and run
This could’ve been a way better game with this in mind.. It has the potential to be a 3d little nightmares game…
I still enjoyed it for it was... clearly more than everyone else did...
The stealth bit of this stealth game though doesn’t really exist...
    I give Hello Neighbor
    a 6.5/10

The people who reside around you are likely jerks, and it can be fun to make up stories with your loved ones about all the horrible things they do in their house after said neighbor annoys you with their distaste for your use of dryer sheets or their strange fondness of stray cats. While some people would be content making these stories up and going on about their day, our unnamed protagonist in Hello Neighbor decides to take things a bit further.

After your ball gets away from you and rolls in front of the neighbor’s yard, we witness what appears to be a murder, so we are tasked with doing what any young kid would do in this circumstance: figure out what kind of shenanigans the guy is up to. To do so, you’ll need to find a way into his house and locate 3 keys that will allow you access to his basement. Sounds simple enough, right?

At first, I set off to test his intelligence, hoping to see a bit of what was advertised as an AI that would learn your tactics and adapt or make changes to the house to prevent you from further meddling in his affairs. I broke windows, ran straight through the door, crept in through a window, turned off his power, the list goes on and on. No matter what I did, his tactics never changed. So this feature is a bit misrepresented in the current stage of the game.

While being caught does not carry a huge penalty – you’ll be transported back to the street facing his house upon being caught – it is a tad bit frustrating. After a few failed attempts, you will wake up in a strange dream world, where the features of the game world are distorted a bit. I was unable to find out what this was to represent or why it occurred. Sure, it was creepy, but it didn’t really make me want to keep investigating. This is primarily due to a lack of direction, as the only tutorial is found on the pause screen, which tells you how to interact with the game and that’s it. The other hurdle is the AI.

Much like the Alien featured in Alien Isolation, the neighbor’s AI is off the charts and feels very unfair. I’d often spawn into the world with him in the front yard, with the heavy baritone music blaring that begins when he sees you, followed by him making a beeline right for me. In other instances, I would run from the house into the street, which I believe is supposed to be a safe zone if you will, and he would follow me and begin doing stretches in the front yard. This would make for an ideal time to sneak into the house if he didn’t stop what he was doing the second I entered the yard, regardless of whether he could see me or not.

The issues do not end there, as the controls, particularly when interacting with some doors or trying to stack items, are intermittent and often non-responsive. Inside of the house there is a specific door that doesn’t have a lock on it, but I was only able to open once every few attempts. While trying to gain entry from the roof, I was stacking boxes along some scaffolding and the controls would often throw instead of placing the item like the box prior, thus knocking over 2 of the 3 boxes I felt were needed to access the area. While I was able to achieve my goal, it was much more frustrating than it should’ve been. The one saving grace is that, with the exception of windows that you break, the changes you make to the game world do stay intact after being caught. While you can hide in closets or under the bed, similar to Outlast or Alien Isolation, the neighbor will often stand there for 5 minutes or more.

While I found the overall package a bit lacking, I do appreciate the art style featured. With its exaggerated details and little touches for those that take the time to explore the world, you can tell a great deal of effort was put into the design. I’m not sure if they intended to make the neighbor come across as a child abductor or killer, but you really do get the chilling feeling of it when exploring his house, finding boxes of tiny shoes and toys tucked away out of sight.

With a bit of polish, this could be an outstanding entry to the horror genre that would even be fit for younger players. In its current state, I would recommend waiting for a sale or hopefully a patch to resolve these issues, as the game could be spectacular with an update. I look forward to revisiting the game in the event these issues do get patched.

In acts 1, 2, and 3 (I think), if you get caught a specific amount of times, you get placed in these things called "nightmares", which give pieces of the neighbors backstory. But you can't understand the story in you don't get the 2 main games for the series and even then, the mystery is still there. People appear mad that a tutorial is non-existing, and I can't really argue with that, there should be a tutorial explaining a few things. People also seem mad that the neighbor is like, everywhere. A valid argument, but his AI works in a way of learning your previous routes and guarding those, making you mix things up to trick him. Graphics look great, and the game doesn't appear to have too many errors. My biggest problem with the game is the ridiculous difficulty of the 3rd act. The neighbor sets up a STUPID amount of traps, making maneuvering in a already tough to maneuver in house even more annoying. the puzzles are vague and will take a good few hours without a guide online. And The Abilities are weird and often don't work correctly. But in the end, If you have some pocket change, I'd go get this game. Expand

After a few hours of playtime, it is clear that Dynamic Pixels needed to keep this game in the oven a little longer, as the physics bugs, inventory glitches, and poor control explanations make this experience a horrifying one for the wrong reasons. This is a mess of broken mechanics that has a lot of potential, but unfortunately potential is all that it has going for it.

There was a lot of hype behind Hello Neighbor, and I've even started seeing merch at stores to purchase, but at this point in time it hasn’t lived up to it yet, not even close. The ideas are there, as is the premise and backdrop, but the execution is severely lacking in the worst possible way. Sure, some fixes might make it a better experience, but there’s no way this should be a full release in its current state. With all this in mind, I say Goodbye Neighbor.
