Hello Neighbor is not a game that should be taken lightly, but it is one that will polarize the fans. I’m on the side that enjoyed it, even though at the start it was nothing near enjoyable. You will fancy it too if you can accept that it means well and forgive the game’s flaws.

Hello Neighbor is a confused game that doesn’t do much to entice those that are new to the experience. There’s a lack of structure in both the story and the gameplay. This alone makes much of the pace rely heavily on trial and error, and although there’s a wide variety of different puzzles to work out, the delivery of each of them can be mind boggling if you miss out on a single detail.

Puzzles and stealth are the main attractions of this peculiar videogame by the Prussian Dynamic Pixels. A title full of good intentions but riddled with bad results.

This game is not what I had envisioned, instead giving me wonky tech and an adversary who’s about as frightening as Barney the Dinosaur when all is said and done.

The basic gameplay idea is solid, but due to the bad implementation the game barely escapes being a total write-off.

After a few hours of playtime, it is clear that Dynamic Pixels needed to keep this game in the oven a little longer, as the physics bugs, inventory glitches, and poor control explanations make this experience a horrifying one for the wrong reasons. This is a mess of broken mechanics that has a lot of potential, but unfortunately potential is all that it has going for it.

There was a lot of hype behind Hello Neighbor, and I've even started seeing merch at stores to purchase, but at this point in time it hasn’t lived up to it yet, not even close. The ideas are there, as is the premise and backdrop, but the execution is severely lacking in the worst possible way. Sure, some fixes might make it a better experience, but there’s no way this should be a full release in its current state. With all this in mind, I say Goodbye Neighbor.

In its current form, I simply cannot recommend Hello Neighbor to anyone until all of the problems are fixed. Again, I am shocked and disappointed that publisher tinyBuild would charge $30 for a product that clearly needs a lot more work. It really sucks because this game has a few things that work well, like its unique mechanics, a great art style, and good, measured horror. There’s a glimmer of something neat but right now, it's best to treat this as Hello Neighbor Game Preview Edition.

A mish-mash of concepts and half-cooked ideas that are never fully developed, wrapped up in a cutesy aesthetic that is at odds with its (at times) dark and disturbing themes. This is one to avoid.

A stealth game with frustrating AI, horrible controls, and game-breaking bugs.

Hello Neighbor is a fantastic premise that falls apart in practice in nearly every way. The game was billed to have cunning AI but offers only an overbearing Neighbor with occasional moments of goofiness. It was meant to feature a bizarre and secret-filled house, but ends up wanting to streamline players with little wiggle room. If you're really dying to know what the Neighbor is hiding and can easily forgive the many trouble spots, you might have limited fun here. Alternatively, another hefty patch could undo a lot of these problems. Such a makeover would need to be drastic, however. When simple tasks like reliably picking up and using or placing items are clunky, it's a good sign that the skeletons in the closet aren't worth discovering.

Frequently more frustrating than frightening, Hello Neighbor is a disaster from top to bottom. There’s a nugget of a good idea here, but between the irrational puzzle design and inconsistent AI, the finished product isn't up to snuff.

Hello Neighbor has been through several alpha builds on PC, yet on Xbox One we're going straight to a full release. However, in its current state with distinct lack of polish and muddled gameplay it feels more like a demo or a modders pet project than anything that should be sat on the Xbox One store. The skeptic in me also suspects that the obscure puzzle design was a deliberate choice to force some hype around the game, as players reach out to internet forums or hit YouTube to watch the many let's play videos doing the rounds for some answers. However, unless you are a streamer yourself or of an age where you can't play real horror games, I can't honestly recommend this to anyone.

I must admit that I didn’t expect the game to have as many problems as it does and this really takes away from anything that is good about the game. The technichal issues in the game can cause you some real problems and you forget about having fun because of this, which is a real shame. Unfortunately the controls don’t do much better and you will be finding yourself getting very frustrated with them, which is a shame because I thought the puzzles in the game were very good but they just end up getting bogged down by the poor controls. The story in the game was something that I enjoyed and I found it to be quite unique, but the ending definitely spoils it. The boss battles at the end feel out of place and are annoying as hell and in a way they undo all of the previous good things about the story. Something that really surprised me about the game was the lack of content it has. I must admit that I was expecting a lot more in terms of content and that was mainly down to its price tag, so to say that the game is overpriced is a massive understatement. The presentation side of the game whilst not perfect is something that tickled my fancy. The visuals are something that I especially enjoyed and I felt that they connected with the gameplay very well. At the end of the day Hello Neighbor disappointed me a great deal and without a doubt I was hoping for much more from the game. It’s riddled with problems throughout and in its current state I would recommend that you stay well clear of this game, but unfortunately I don’t think a patch or two will sort out enough and the underlying problems will still remain. If you were looking forward to Hello Neighbor then I think you will be very disappointed with the final outcome, and when you combine the game’s problems with its high price tag then you get a game that really doesn’t offer you a reason to buy it, which is a shame. That beingFirst of all let me say that I love the art style and I had high hopes from the trailers, never having played the Alpha versions. That being said, this game is by no means finished. This is a Beta version disguised as a full game and for $30, it is a stretch. The initial release was already postponed once in August and I wish they had taken the time to actually finish it. In the almost 2 hours I've put into Hello Neighbor I have run into multiple bugs (launching across the map and dying notably). The neighbor wanders around aimlessly and will start stretching/glitching out in the front yard sometimes infinitely. It has also crashed on me over 3 times completely sucking me out of the experience. I wanted so badly to like this game, and that was before I spent $30 on it. Now I just to not play a broken game. It is a shame Xbox does not refund digital downloads, or I would return this and wait for it to be either on sale or fixed (*ahem* finished). Hopefully a patch will be released to fix some of the issues. In short, for the $30 price tag you are getting the idea of a cool game with little of the follow through. Buyer beware. Full Review »
