Characters aren't fleshed at all out and the gameplay was stupid predictable. Walk around, open a door, a bunch of robots or drones drop from the sky or out of a gooey pit, kill them, rinse and repeat. Also, it's almost impossible to die since anytime you're near death one of your teammates revives you. There's no real "open world" play - you can't really explore beyond the straightforward bounds the game sets for you.

I wanted to like this game, but it failed on all levels outside of looking pretty outstanding. But it's just lipstick on a pig. Sad.

There was a bit more humor in the quips between you and your squad that was surprisingly funny for a game in this genre. JD, Del, and Kate are all great characters that mesh really well together. Not to mention the returning characters we all know and love.

The gameplay is still fantastic Gears-style cover shooting and the new enemies and weapons make the formula even better. There were a few times when I felt a little bored with one aspect or another, but right around the corner was another new element to bring my attention right back in.

I also tend to forget that Gears games usually have a really well done horror section or two. The pacing is done in such a way that you aren't always involved in epic firefights, sometimes you are slowly moving through a creepy abandoned area expecting an ambush around every turn.

It did seem to wrap up and end kind of abruptly, but since they are continuing the story into Gears 5 that makes a bit of sense.

    Overall, excellent and highly recommended!

GoW4 fails at that miserably, it uses cheapness to kill you not difficulty. The checkpoints in the game are rare and scattered so when I get to them I shouldn't constantly get spawn killed. I have lost count of how many times I get spawn killed right at the standard designated checkpoints. I'm on a checkpoint now where I get 3 seconds to get cover before the firing starts but it told me to use a weapon crate I spawn next to and press a button to put up cover. But because I spawn in combat I cant and I never even got to open the crate and get a gun until the scene was over. I shouldn't spawn in combat then have to go through 4 separate huge firefights to finally get the next checkpoint that will also spawn me in combat. The AI is really bad too. My coop companion is constantly getting in my line of fire or stealing my cover spot from me, all the while never killing anything. The only thing the companions do well is crawl to you when they need to be revived lol. On the upside the graphics are great. However the controls can feel clunky and leads to me entirely avoiding a few weapons. Expand

The sections outside of these parts are great. The soundtrack is awesome but the stand out is the art direction. It's a Dystopian world but still amazingly beautiful. I am legit blown away by how good it looks. It's kind of similar to the way I felt with the Last of Us. Is this really an Xbox One game? It looks like it would be closer to a Scorpio game. I'm extremely excited for the future of Gears now. After Judgement I was a bit scared. I also love the new addition of weapons. Everyone brings up the buzzkill but that is the worst one in my opinion lol. I really love the Overkill shotgun and the Embar. Those are awesome. Along with the new weapons, the gameplay just feels super smooth. I can't complain one bit about the gameplay. Best of the series.

As for the Multiplayer. It's fantastic as well. I like how we get 2 new maps every month.

I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and I don't feel the game is unfair, so I've been learning to be patient and to pick the right moment to make my moves. It is truly good. Just remember to go for the head or the enemy will just be bullet sponges.

I did have some money in my account by doing searches through Bing.com which you could get about $10 a month if you use Bing.com regularly so it was even more satisfying to buy it, just a tip. I really recommend the game.

There are some quick and infrequent burst of cinematic excitement, and adrenaline, but it quickly goes back to spray and pray. This game shines best during the windflares, and "cinematic" uncharted-like sequences ( like the bike and the mech), but those make up maybe 1/5 of the game. JD is also way more interesting than marcus, he actually has a fun demeanor to him, almost like nathan drake. Game also has a decent pvp, something I can see myself pouring some hours in, not the best, but very serviceable. To end, why wasn't the game more of act 5, and not 2-4? why didn't the game have more of the mech-sequences/ bike sequences/ even the that boss fight that actually has depth (the one where you shoot the generators..second to last?). Why was the majority of the game mind-numbingly boring spray and pray fest. I probably will never understand the gears franchise.. Expand

Clunky controls, bad story, repetitive game play....enter area, get ambushed, clear area and hear the same tired guitar riff from xbox 360 era. I played this series on 360 and hadn't touched it in years because of the rinse and repeat process I mentioned above. Gears of War 4 is the second to worst Gears game there is (Judgement is the worst). The story and multiplayer components are so generic and boring. I don't really see the reason why people are hating on this game. I actually think this is better than the first one.
Gears of War 4 is a beautiful shooter, with tons of over the top moments, plenty of guns, gruesome enemies and cool characters. The writing is a bit dull, the last act is pretty boring and the ending is bad. But that didn't break the entire game for me. I recommend it.

The campaign is solid if not a little repetitive and if not for forgettable cookie-cutter characters. The difference between Nathan Drake and the forgettable protagonist in Gears of War is that Nathan Drake's banter is funny. The other characters are similar modeled after checking all the boxes, like Poochie from that old Simpson's episode. The best part of the game is when grumpy old Marcus Fenix comes back to complain about the robot army destroying his tomatoes.

Some of the set pieces in Gears of War 4 are pure triple A magic. The new mechanic is wind. You have to find cover from it, use destructible objects to take advantage of it, and then dodge lightning. (The world of Gears of War makes no sense.) The new enemies are robots. You might think you would start with the same old pasty faced grubs and move up to robots. No. You start with the new and interesting enemy and move down to the same old same old from 4 other Gears of War games. (Lest we forget Gears of War: Judgment. I know I did. Totally skipped that entire game.) Weapons are also the same old same old until you get the giant robot to pilot.

This is where Gears of War 4 is both amazing and a lesson in missed opportunities. Rather than spending hours upon hours crouched behind chest high walls, you could be stomping around in a giant mech. Gears of War 2 knew this, and had players pilot flying monsters, walking monsters, giant drill platforms, a tank, and finally, a helicopter. Gears of War 4 is for the most part content with walking around slowly. The environment looks great. After Halo 5, the Xbox One needed a game that looked properly next gen. What Microsoft forgets is that I have a whole beautiful world outside my front door. What I want is escapism. Crouching behind cover is not escapism.

I did not bother with multi-player. The game is a few years old and the population is probably circling the drain. I never much cared for the slow paced multiplayer in the Xbox 360 days. Besides, I picked this game up for $5 and the campaign was enough to get my money's worth.

All-in-all, Gears of War 4 is a good game. 7/10 good. For this generation of derivative sequels and micro-transaction laden trip, a 7 out of 10 is almost the gold standard.

Expand

I actually played through the entire game on PC, but beeing an xbox anywhere title I figured I'd test out the xbox one (vanilla) version aswell.

Lookswise it did impress me considering the crappy hardware it was running on. The game uses dynamic resolution and on occasion when things got heavy you could see a drop in resolution and some tearing.
But the biggest issue when it comes to the singleplayer and the horde mode with the xbox one version is the low framerate. The game runs at 30fps except for VS multiplayer. It does hold 30 for the most part by sacrificing resolution when need be.
The lower visuals I can take, but it is just not up to par in such a game to run such low frames. Especially coming from the buttery smooth pc version playing this feelt like a substantial sacrifice to gameplay and I did not feel enticed to keep playing.

As for the game itself it is a Gears game, no more no less. It doesn't surprise and innovate really but it doesn't disappoint either.
The shooting and action is solid albeit a bit repetetive, the whole game is moving from one area to the next doing the exact same thing. The game does not reward exploration and it doesn't mix the formula or gameplay style for variety. But what is there is good.
Story is okay but got an abrupt ending wich left alot unexplained. I feel they could have fleshed out some bits a bit more.
The singleplayer took me around 8-9h to complete on normal. Quite short. But there is replayability here. I will play the campaign again on a higher difficulty in coop once my friend gets the game. And then there is multiplayer VS or Horde mode to expand your playtime if you are into that.

I would say that if you are a SP guy only and the multiplayer or coop does not interest you that much, then what this game offers might be a bit lacking and I'd rate it at around a 6/10 due to the short campaign and repetetive gameplay. But if you are into coop/multiplayer and because of the fact that it not only offers coop, it offers a full campaign coop to boot AND local coop even on the pc version... I will crank that score up a bit. However I also subtracted one point from this game on this xbox version compared to my score on the pc version simply because of the impact the **** performance on xbox one has in terms of gameplay. It is substantial.

In the end I would recomend the game on pc first and foremost, but also on xbox one if you have no other choice. It's play anywhere, so you get both versions regardless without any extra cost.

The Coalition really understood the previous game's mechanics and mastered them pretty well. New enemies are badass. They looks cool and punch hard. Graphics are the of the best on xbox and of all games developed on UE4. Music's written by Ramin Djavadi, famous composer of Game of Thrones TV Series.

There is online modes for the guys who like them, split screen/online co-op and Horde mode which are pretty badass.

After passing you catch yourself on the moment that the 4 part is the best in the series if you forget the unique 2 part. Gameplay has been transformed by the kind of little things that most developers don 't pay attention to, an idea with the interaction of different items on the map during a storm is beautiful. Overall I got one pleasure from the game. The only thing that saddens is that the underreporting of history is visible, it feels like GOW4 is just the beginning of a new story. Expand

It's Gears Of War, folks, either you love it or you don't really care about it's existence but just like the first game, the second and the third it's a solid game that you really can't hate on for no reason. Here's to another awesome Gears Of War game for the next generation.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention how great the new characters are, they really did a good job and I hope they stick around for at least 3 more games.

Oh and the final level is amazing, they turned the game on it's head in all the best ways. The ending to the game in general is the just great and it sets up for a sequel which we all knew would happen anyways.

Okay, now I'm done. I promise.

It really just comes down to if the series really needed this. I was very excited initially, but looking at Judgment and GOWUE made me think that maybe the franchise was doing this because it wants to appease a new crowd of people. Considering the veterans have mostly been long and gone from the franchise, enticing newcomers can be quite challenging and seeing the Gears legacy be brought down after 3 is very problematic. Gears of War 4 rekindles hope for the series, but it needs to overcome the stupid practices it has and really embrace new ideas if it has any hope of being the strong flagship it once was. Expand

This is not a perfect game, and probably should be an 8 or a 9, but I put a 10 to try to balance the score.

    Pros:
    1. Great gameplay if you are into gears or 3rd persons shooters.
    2. Very solid Campaign, that has great graphics and fairly interesting scenarios

    4. Multiplayer is some of the most fun of all time.

    Cons:
    1. Story plays it too safe and has a bit too many cliches.
    2. Microtransactions, quite a lot, that I am pretty sure are all cosmetic, at least I haven't seen anyone that gives you a competitive edge.
    3. Season pass

So overall, this game is worth it if you are able to look beyond the story, microtransactions/season pass. Well after all my praise, is this the best Gears of War? Well, simply put, I've only played this and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. This is by far better than Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in my opinion though.

Half the gunplay is terrible because there's little hit feedback, enemies are generally spongy unless you play on Casual, the fabricator is a sad gimmick that was quickly thrown together, you use the same weapons throughout most of the game because most heavy weapons that aren't terrible are quickly discarded by the game.
The AI is atrocious and more hindrance than help. The one-liners are generally very dumb, but that seems to be the target audience.
The performance is fine most of the game, cutscenes come in choppy 30 fps while the rest easily goes 60. The game has 2, maybe 3 tile sets, but somehow comes with 130GiB that I have no idea how they filled, every damn shooter with more gameplay, more world, more characters, more sounds, items etc is 20% the size.

Lighter in tone, but equally brutal as its predecessors, "Gears 4" is a good title that captures the classic feel of the series. While the campaign can get repetitive, it never ceases to be an entertaining action ride. The story follows Marcus Fenix's youthful son and his two best friends on a journey that eventually leads them into a conflict with a new generation of evolved Locust creatures.

The campaign relies more on cutscenes than ever before and the stunning CGI animation gives it a highly cinematic feel. I liked the new weapons which include a rifle that fires ricocheting saw blades and a submachine gun that resembles the SMG from "Halo 2". Gameplay is classic "Gears" with plenty of scripted events that are reminiscent of Hollywood action movies. The game also now features advanced enemy A.I. and a weather system that affects combat with strong winds and debris. The only disappointments come in a few "rinse and repeat" segments and the sudden ending to the story. It concludes very much like "The Matrix Reloaded" as the game just stops, rather than ending on a proper note.

The competitive multiplayer modes are standard "Gears" with some maps pulled from previous titles. More "Rainbow Six" than "Call of Duty", the matches rely on fast-paced, tactical action. Customization options are there, but limited to weapon and uniform skins. Some players will be more impressed with the new "Horde" mode. Horde 2.0 includes the soldier classes which were introduced in the "Judgment" prequel. As you rank up, the special abilities of each solider type are upgraded. There are 50 levels in Horde, but the difficulty quickly increases due to the more aggressive enemies who use advanced tactics to kill you. Both Horde and competitive multiplayer include the new card system which either increase various stats or help you earn more points by completing challenges.

"Gears of War 4" is a satisfying title in the franchise. A massive improvement over "Gears of War: Judgment", it still doesn't best the original trilogy in terms of creativity, but it's a great start to a new series of games. I especially liked the campaign's humor which seems to be inspired by "Guardians of the Galaxy" or Sony's "Uncharted" series. Long time fans will definitely feel at home with this and newbies will find it to be a real blast. Overall, I'd rank this with an 8.4 out of 10.

Gears of War is not a BAD game, there's just a lot of major things The Coalition missed, that Epic got right on their first try.
I do suggest Gears of War to anyone who's never played it, but I also suggest the 360 trilogy more than 4. While the story was phenomenal, TC keeps on making stupid decisions, that negatively affect the player.
Good game at first, aggravating afterwards. Sorry

Gears of War 4 is the best thing that could have happened with the series in the hands of a new team. The Coalition, though not able to reach the level of the original trilogy, but offered a strong action movie that will please fans of shooters with a pleasant variety, unexpected solutions and memorable scenes

The campaing mode continues the events of the previous games of the saga, leading you trough levels relly well designed and full of action. However this gamemode is too short... It took me around 15 hours to finish it. The online mode was better than i expected, pretty entertaining but nothing too special.
To sum up: Gears of War 4 is a good game that will give you some hours of fun as a result of its short campaing and its not addictive online mode.

There are few games that capture the electric, pulse racing feeling of softening up a blood thirsty monster from behind cover before charging towards the enemy and slicing it in half with a chainsaw. That originality is what makes the Gears franchise so special. Sure there are an abundance of third person shooters but none manage to incorporate strategy, fluid gameplay and creative weapons in the same way as Gears Of War. So you can understand where my expectation were for number four and I'm glad to say that neither I nor my heart were disappointed.
After a series of flashbacks to the previous games that proves as your tutorial Gears 4 drops you right in the middle of a destructive, wisecracking, jolly party of friends as they launch a raid on your typical Military corporation. Gears 4 embraces taking new strides and the first of many is with the new enemies called deebee's. Functionally they are the same as the familiar locusts' but manage to showcase the cleverness and sharpness of the Game's AI. They rush from behind cover, flank you, eliminate your friends first so that there's is nobody to revive you and use the new weapons effectively. Many of these weapons cater to the two different types of players. Ones who opt for close combat will find double firing shotguns and machine guns with a large ammo capacity. But ones who are more reclusive shall find plenty of Snipe Rifles, grenades and some Special Weapons like the Buzzsaw, which literally fires saw blades. Some weapons have great strengths but also weaknesses such as having to mount them in place. But what this does is make you use your strategy effectively to beat the level.
Boss fights in this game are also handles quite well, most of them require you to shoot weak points before delivering some classic heavy damage. But a lot of them have their own traits that make it harder for them to fight. Some might try and pounce on top of you while others will hover above your head.
As for the story in the game I found it to be the weaker side of things, I do enjoy many of the characters wether it be old man Marcus or the loveable Oscar, who is not hungover but still drunk. I found that most characters actually progressing and evolving as the Story continued which was a genuine surprise. That being said the ending to this game is unfortunately non existent. The game seems to abruptly end on a bitter note with no suggestion of what the characters are to do next.
Thankfully Multiplayer is still a stand out feature in this game, matchmaking is quick and easy and the game offers a variety of game modes with fast paced and intense action. Success will depend on your reflexes, mobility and use of weapons. Thankfully the game includes new moves that make Gameplay more interesting such as the ability to vault over cover while an enemy is on the other side. This temporarily dazes them and allows for a swift knife kill.
Even with the xbox one X on the horizon, gears of war has never looked better. The explosive and gory gameplay visually shines like a detailed painting and all the destroyed beauty of towns and facilities you explore adds to the atmosphere.
I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy this game, but I would be also lying if I said it was the best in the series. I do think that the Story and some minor gameplay tropes are weak but given all the good in it there is no lie in saying that I enjoyed the blood, guts, gore and so much more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played previous gears games and decided to catch up before 5 came out and actually finish 4. I am very disappointed. This game introduces anything new in terms of game play, the same clunky controls that were considered great in 2007 are not that great now. The biggest thing I hate in GOW series is the fact that running locks you into only going forward. This is a horrible mechanic and should have evolved as the games came out over the years. But what made gears great in the past was it's story, now though we are treated to an absolute lame story where you fight robots and then the drones from previous games. NOTHING has changed, same area to area combat until you get to a boss where you shoot a glowing body part until it is dead. The scale of the war has been scaled down so there are hardly any epic moments in the game.

    - NO horde offline single play mode
    - old controls, old gameplay
    - boring story

I'll start off with the pros. The game itself had great graphics, it was a beautiful game at most points, however due to the original XBOX power, it did stutter at points. However... at some points when I wanted to simply move to another placed or crouch there was so many things the A button did that the character I was controlling was going to the wrong places and doing the wrong things, moreover simply jumping over a hurdle felt arduous and clunky. Also, at some points in the game graphics were so textured I could see the pixels... a cheap way of increasing FPS. With this being said there were a reasonable amount of stuff to unlock for multiplayer and skins, however I never felt rewarded as the multiplayer had limited maps and they all felt extremely similar to the other ones, which after a while completely put me off the multiplayer.

The new tower defense sort of implementation with hordes of enemies charging you down while you spray at them with your allies, was fun, and a welcome aspect to the game. However they were ultimately the same with different places they were set in, and felt unfinished when I was playing them. The story was reasonably interesting however apart from nostalgia of a former character in the franchise I never felt connected to any of the characters and felt very similar to a lot of other characters in other games, thus making the story lack luster. However with some nicely put together set pieces, is the only thing that boosts the score a little bit.

Overall the games singleplayer shooting aspect I would say is it's best aspect, making progress through hordes of enemies, keeping it at it's routes at what a gears of war game is, with interesting and huge bosses, I felt the bosses were a little easier in this game, never with a real challenge, especially after chasing after them for most of the campaign. If you're a fan of shooters, this is a good game, however if you're looking for an engaging story, it can be found elsewhere.

Not a great game, but Kait Diaz makes the whole thing worth it. She is a great character the likes of which only Dom can compete with. Gears of war trilogy was awesome, with GoW 2 being my personal favorite, that game kicked so much ass

Multiplayer of GoW4 is fun. Now for the campaign, it's just boring, characters are empty and lifeless, I couldn't give a flying f about any of them, the story felt really weak, I mean you shoot generic robots for about 20% of the campaign, I guess the developers were out of ideas.

    Disappointing to say the least.

The series thankfully has only one **** prequel that somehow has the trappings of what made the originals good, but missing the point entirely. All this leads to one conclusion then. Gears of War 4 is the Force Awakens of the Gears of War series. It brings back the characters you love with adding new likeable fun characters as replacements. Has a new yet in a way old familiar enemy, and is all about you getting reintroduced into the world of Gears. I know a hell of an intro to get into this review, but anyways B-rod here, and I love the **** out of Gears of War 4.

When I first saw this game I thought, “oh great they are going to milk Gears of War for all it’s worth.” I was right technically, but the team at The Coalition took some time and care into making this game, and made it a fun experience. The game’s story is about Marcus Fenix’s son James Fenix and his two squad/friends embarking on a mission to find out what happened to their village which was attacked by these unknown creatures. The mystery is not deep but engaging, but what really sold this game to me was the characters. James, Kait, and Del they were charming, funny and just overall characters you wanted to follow. I like Marcus Fenix, but he was always a cardboard cutout Conan type character. James is a funny likeable rogue who you’d want to follow long after the game is over. I can’t tell you how much I dug this story and character especially since I thought this game would be just another Judgement fail.

The gameplay is exactly what sequels are supposed to be. It keeps the core gameplay the same, and just adds upon it. It doesn’t retool how the gameplay works making it less fun entirely Gears of War Judgement. (I’m JUDGING the hell out of that game right now). Adding in the weather as a hazard while you fight is such a kickass obstacle that I honestly never knew I needed. The worst part of this game is the beginning where the first two act of the game you’re fighting robots. These **** things are not only boring to kill, but are bullet sponges to the point of annoyance. Once you fight the real enemy of the game which are called the Swarm that’s where you get into that good ole Gears we know and love. Even the Swarm have creatures that are interesting to fight and keep you on your toes. They force you not to just sit there shooting at them with your Lancer until they explode. It sorta felt like a fight in Bloodborne with how often you were forced to dodge and shoot. The game looks like a Gears game. It’s the best looking by far, but nothing that is unfamiliar as it were.

Overall if you never played a Gears of War game before I wouldn’t recommend it because I feel like you’d be missing something that the typical Gears player would see. If you are a Gears fan, but were turned off by Judgement by all means get this game it is my favorite of the games since Gears of War 2 came out. I did not expect to love this as much as I did and I have to give it 4.5/5. If it wasn’t for that first two acts fighting nothing but robots I would’ve gave it a perfect score. Until next time folks.

The Coalition has managed to successfully bring every great elements from previous games into a new setting. Whether you go for single-player, multiplayer or horde mode, GoW4 hast plenty to offer. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is the best in the series thus far; and despite shortcomings in the story and development of characters, GoW4 is easily one of the best third-person shooters of this generation.
