This is the most fun I've had with Gears since the first game. It looks beautiful, fits into the universe well, and oh by the way it has the smoothest and best gunplay of any Gears ever.

I am a HUGE Gears 3 fan! Especially the horde mode where me and several friends played for 5 years. The campaign was a lot shorter then I thought. About 8-8.5 hours. I also liked how they introduced a couple of new weapons. The overkill and buzzkill are awesome! It was very obvious they left it for another game or two which was fine by me.

I don't do versus mode so much but I do know a ton about Horde mode. As I said before, I thought Gears 3 had the perfect horde mode. Gears 4 is ok at best to me. I guess one of the good things about it is that they have pretty much forced you to try new things and take you out of your comfort zone. My beef is not with the class system as it is more with a couple of other key contents. One is the "build the barriers wherever you want" thing. The combat on normal is so hard (with 3 people) that the only way to be able to survive long enough, you have to set up at one end of the map all the time. You can't experience these maps for what they are because you can easily get run over otherwise unless you find a one way funnel. In Gears 3 you were forced to take residence one place or another and try and defend it. Here, you are lucky if you can defend two barriers. The other thing is the 30 seconds they give you before the waive starts. Are you kidding me? 30 seconds? With all the crap that we have to do to prepare, they should have at least given us 1 minute. You can't just repair like you used to, one button and your done. Here you have to have a engineer with a tool to repair everything. That takes time. Then you have to have all the guys go out there and pick up all the "money" from dead bodies. Then bring it back to the base. If you coordinate it well, you are lucky if you can get everything done in 30 seconds. It usually doesn't happen though.

My friends and I thrived on seeing how long you can go without using the turrets or Silverback in Gears 3. In 4, you can't survive unless you start using it at waive 8! Are you kidding me? And this is on normal. This makes the game very boring where you always are setting up at one end of the map trying to funnel them in and killing them with a turret or two. In Gears 3, we were well into the late 30's before we needed heavier weapons.

The other thing in Horde that was lacking was the variety of baddies. In 3 there were so many different kind of guys. Here, there are basically just a handful. There are basically 4 different types of Robots and 4 different kinds of Locusts. In 3 you could tell which was which by the way they looked and sounded. In 4 for example, the Big lumbering guys all look the same but carry different weapons. Same with the drones. That was not the case in 3. The variety was a lot more.

Again, I am basing this on playing this with 3 people, not the 5 online that most do. That is because we have found out that most people don't play horde the way it should be, as a team. They just go off running on their own being idiots and getting themselves killed. Gears 4 tries to address the team concept but I don't think it succeeded doing that. It just made it more difficult and tedious and not as fun to play.

I almost forgot, the whole card business that most game developers are going to is just so annoying. It is fun to open them at first but then after a little while you realize you keep getting the same crap. And they don't tell you how you make money in order to get card packs free. Once we played until waive 20 on horde and got $1000. Next time we played till 30 and got only a few hundred. What gives? Anyway, just another way for us to spend real money which there is no way in hell I will.

Gears 3 was the pinnacle of greatness in the Gears series. I just don't feel the pull to keep playing 4 like I did with 3 is there.

    Cons:
The cover mechanic in vs is janky but if you know how to utilise it then you have the advantage. This makes it HELL for first timers and the average XBL child/namecaller/overall **** will probably give you issues for trying to learn this game. Once learned however its a great multiplayer. Especially with friends.

We already know or can infer (accurately) everything that happens, with the exception of the last plot twist, which shows how hollow the game is! Half the characters aren't even 'characters'! They're plot devices! Gameplay-wise, Gears of War 4 does do a good job in innovating and improving the gameplay, focusing mainly on Cover&Mantle mechanics. The multiplayer and horde elements hold up fairly well, but feel shallow when you realise the end-game is just to get some skins that other people got before they played their first match! Gears 4 has less content than 3, 2, and arguably the original. It has a measly 7 maps, and averages on 4 chapters an Act, which is honestly pathetic. Some parts of the story try to make up for this, but in the end, based on my experiences with this title, previous 4 games, and other popular titles, I were to buy this game again, it would be on sale, for no more than around $/£30, once future updates have been released to add more maps to play & skins to work towards.

The game is worth original trilogy, good looking, fun but maybe a bit short. I feel it should be a lot more fight. This way it looks like isolated mini war, not some global danger situation. Btw characters hair looks bad.
Multiplayer is ok but it is just fast finger shotgun fest, very difficult one.

I was late getting to this one because I only recently got an xbox one, and have only played PS4 games until now, and so far thanks to this game I am super happy I bought an xbox one. It took me a bit to get used to the reload button being the RB but I really enjoyed that fancy reload mechanic. When you reload using RB and wait until the perfect moment you can press RB again for some kind of "super" reload, giving the reloaded bullets a buff in damage. I can't think of 1 other game I have ever played that does that, so naturally I was surprised. I only know bits and pieces of the Gears universe since I never had a chance to play the original but In GoW 4 you play as Marcus Pheonix's son JD, as he helps his friend (Possibly girlfriend?) get her mother back from the locusts. The story is good, not great as it gets really predictable. The graphics are pretty incredible. I always thought that the PS4 had superior graphics but this game looks as good as anything I have played on the PS4 except for maybe uncharted 4 but gameplay is king and Gears of War 4 definitely has fantastic gameplay. The sound is good but kinda forgettable. Nothing really pops. Multiplayer is fun for a bit but I actually prefer the horde mode. This is where you team up with other players to defend your position against as many waves of enemies as you can. All in all Gears of War 4 is worth a look if you are a fan of cover based shooters. Story: now admittedly, I am brand new to the series so many aspects of this game or throwbacks are either brand new to me or go over my head. But I think I get the main idea of the story, many people are getting snatched away by creatures being called “The Swarm”. You play as Marcus Fenix’s son James, who is trying to rescue some of the crew. Later on you learn that these “Swarm” have some sort of connection with the old enemies called “The Locust”, however we don’t learn a whole lot in this game as it feels the developers are setting up for the story to really take place in a future installment.
Gameplay: this game handles extremely well. It strongly urges the use of using cover as often as possible and the weapons while varied all feel incredibly satisfying to use. Whether killing an enemy by filling them with bullets or ripping them in half with a chainsaw, you’ll be right at home no matter the weapon you enjoy using.
Conclusion: this game is really enjoyable. It was well worth the price and I am always eager to get in and try out the multiplayer modes in the game. The story mode while not being short didn’t feel like it dragged on too long, nor did I feel like it was ever a chore playing the game.
That being said I personally didn’t personally enjoy the three Fabricator segments in the story which are essentially wave survival modes.
Score: while this game does do a lot of things right, it is not without its flaws. The Fabricator sections feel like they breakup the story a bit too much and at times just feel forced on the player. As for the story, while being amazing, feels a bit like filler to prepare for a future game. I give this game a score of 7/10 (note: this score is purely personal opinion and you should try the game for yourself before passing judgement)

The characters this time adds more emotion this time round in my opinion playing as JD Fenix, Fait and Del, i had great fun playing through the campaign and even more fun in Horde 3.0 a hybrid of Judgement and 3's Horde Mode, having class based characters and a improved currency system, the added game modes in multiplayer brings in new styles to play. The visuals are stunning on the standard Xbox One and no doubt looks better on the Xbox One S and PC, the only issue i came up with was the lack of campaign achievements but that's just my opinion on the fact, but overall i give the game a 10 Expand

Honestly, it reignites my interest and excitement in the Gears series. I was skeptical with the Coalition now taking control of the reigns, but now I'm certain they can do awesome things with the next game or two. My only two complaints are that the characters are weak and the story is mostly there to lay the foundation of a new game. Other than that, story was great and the game was great!

Otherwise, pretty nice online shooter with very repetitive gameplay, which can be only fun to play with friends. Game mechanics is not completely polished, sometimes it is difficult to jump over obstacles, as well as character sometimes "hides" behind walls, being almost a meter off it.

The game overall is very good and very close to the feeling of the Gears 1 which I adore. There are great and enjoyable "bruckheimer" moments like that improvised elevator or the plane chase and overall, everything feels fine tuned.

I didn't like the "wave" phase in the campaign: they are too slow to prepare with a strategy that could be summed up as "choose 2 barriers or one turret".

But the reason why I gave only a 7 is because I'm also rating the "story" that I found very weak and predictable if there was actually something to predict. It feels like the many boring netflix series where you watch a 40 minutes episode to realize that thing could have been told in 10 minutes without sacrificing the emotional charge. The characters (geek soldiers?) are not very interesting either but, to be fair, it's hard to measure to the original gears.

The graphics are amazing and really push the limits of the xbox one, there are no glitches and it is a technical marvel. The set pieces are incredibly outrageous and really show the epic scale of the game even showcasing the visuals at its optimal. The characters are all badasses except for JD Fenix, the protagonist who is your everyman boyscout, and this is a letdown considering how Marcus was one of the best protagonists in all of gaming, truly badass and undeniably the coolest ever and continues to be so in this game. The others are also pretty good, anyway we also have to put into consideration the fact that this is their first rodeo so of course, they are soft. the gameplay is as satisfying as ever and is more polished, it is easier to bounce in and out of cover and is overall smoother in every other aspect. There is a lot of variation, many enemy types and the AI is much smarter making you actually think where and when to move using which weapon and whatnot. The multiplayer has a few hiccups here and there, it lags from time to time and matches are kinda slow to find, however it looks gorgeous, each map is amazing in its own right and with the patch today its even better now with no lag. I hope that gears will take some tips from halo multiplayer and make it much much better. horde is a treat, very challenging and satisfying. the campaign is a bit short and the story is a bit small scale, you dont feel like as if you're saving the world but the future installments will obviously change that. I really hope they refine the multiplayer a bit more, because it is fun, there is no denying that however, it's very odd to find matches. Maybe i am a but too used to the halo 5 matchmaking but it's flawless and I am sure that with microsoft's backing it is possible to make the match finding more intuitive and overall easier to find. I would rate it a 9 but with the insecure sony fanboys still riding on uncharted 4 rating it zeroes i have to fight back. this game is easily 10 material but i'd give it a few months till it gets to that level. Game is unplayable 1 year after launch. Not to mention you can hardly find a match anymore because all the devs (TC) care about are making $$ on weapon skins and characters rather than improving the game. The servers are terrible and laggy after the QoS update. The game gets worse with every update.

I've never played a Gears game that has been in development for this long be this bad... the matchmaking is almost unplayable, the hit detection is so bad no game feels official. Horde has less features, and the fortifications don't hold up well... this is half the game Gears 3 was, and it's almost double the price if you include the pass.

The Swarm aren't as good as the locus, but they still have some cool monsters, and the way the Collalition introduces them are all pretty cool. The writing is a step up for the series as well, with more personality given to the new leads (and some good lines to the old), and the ending was a great "WTF" moment as a fan of the series.

The Horde mode is back and better then ever. Similar to Gears 3's horde mode except a lot more flexible, and it is very fun. I like the new class system and how you can choose different upgrades for them, so if two people are a soldier one can be focused on assault rifle damage while another can focus on other guns and health. The only thing is I wish there were a few more types of bosses, like maybe a few can be put in for dlc.

The competitive multiplayer is back and fun. I do have a few problems with it though. One, I feel like there could be a few more maps. Some of these maps are simply amazing, maps that I will be playing a lot, but others, while still good, make me want more. Not only that, but I wish there were more social playlist then one that just combines all of them.

My other big complaint is the store system needs some work. The player earns credits too slowly and the loot (which gives you horde upgrades, versus bounties and cosmetics) is too expensive, plus you can get repeats. If everything were cheaper and you earned a few by your self (like lets say every 20 levels are so) I would be fine, but as it stands it could be better.

Overall, fantastic game that could have some work with its matchmaking, enemy variety (specifically bosses) and its currency system. I would recommend to any fan of the series or anybody looking for a good shooter, there is definitely $60 worth of content here. If you're not a fan of the series, I would stay away because this won't change your mind.

Gears of War 4 è tutto ciò che i fan potevano aspettarsi, violento, crudo, tamarro.

The combat is similar to the other Gears games: there’s the ability to get behind cover and sprint, as well as pulling the enemy over cover and knife executing them, as well as the loadout of four weapons, and a class special ability in Horde mode. While this isn’t quite an inventive game, there’s tons of fun to be had in taking out opponents or interrupting a firefight with a grenade and getting a double kill.

The controls are top notch. The Xbox One controller is second to none, and this game helps prove that point. I never ran into control issues during my 7 hour campaign run, or my 15 hour horde mode run. Thanks to the superb controls, the combat felt both precise and elegant overall.

While it’s possible to earn points to spend on in-game items like weapons, upgrades, and items, there’s also a way to spend real world money as well. The season pass supposedly unlocks a good bit of stuff in order to boost your earnings and experience, but I didn't pay for a season pass, so I don't care all that much.

All in all, the game is a very fun cover based shooter title with lots of replay and gorgeous graphics.

The reason for giving it a 9 instead of 10 is customization. These is were the game fails across the board in my opinion. In Gears of War 3 you have to obtain the characters and weapon skin by doing something in the game and sometimes even on older games. yes there was micro transactions too but it wasn't the only option and made you want it more. Example, in GoW3 you had to gain a certain amount of mvp ribbons to obtain the mvp Cole. So if you see someone with it in multiplayer you would think that he has to be at least a decent player. On the other hand if you see someone with a rare skin in GoW4 so say hey that guy has a lot of luck or money. Yes you still can get it by playing a lot and getting those coins to buy the packages but not everything. Example, the e-sport support package had exclusives skins that you could gamble to get what you wanted for $10 and no other way.

The game itself is super enjoyable, thanks mainly to the well-tuned controls. On paper, there’s not too much difference between the way The Coalition has approached Gears 4 and the way Epic approached the other games in the franchise. There's a button for firing, one for reloading, and another for weapon-switching. Fairly standard stuff.

Where Gears 4 beats the previous games in the franchise is in the polish applied to the controls. Movement is smooth and accurate across the board, while the fact that most combat takes place behind walls means there’s very little strafing and shooting on the run. There’s also no need for extra buttons - cover is handled almost automatically, there’s very little close-combat elements, and absolutely no dashing. You can still roadie run in the new game. The simple controls has the desirable effect of keeping things manageable, even when there are several enemies all gunning for your COG blood.

Everything about the game, from the graphics and controls right through to the sound, oozes class. Unbelievably, even the voice acting is entertaining, so while the beautiful orchestral soundtrack does get a little tiresome after the 4th hour into the campaign, it’s still cranking the volume to hear the great exchanges between JD and his sarcastic friend, Del.

Naturally one the big draws is the graphics, there are a lot of very good things to say about the visuals, the textures are detailed and the animations are flawless. The levels and set pieces are very good looking and have an excellent amount of variety. That’s not to say that there isn't a little repetition in the levels, but they are gorgeous and they do vary enough for me to not get tired of any one setting. Set-pieces such as a boss ‘battle’ with a huge swarmac and the excellent variety in the enemies you encounter keep you on your toes throughout.

There are very few moments in Gears 4 when overall ambition exceeds the final execution. Gears 4 remains the best attempt to recreate the third-person action game we’ve seen on current gen hardware to date, proving that you don’t necessarily have to ditch a genre just because the formula got semi-stale 5 years ago

Finished the campaign with my friend over the weekend and we both enjoyed it.
When it comes down to the core 3rd person cover shooter genre I think this series has the best mechanics and most action packed.
Even the story is entertaining, like a fun summer action movie.

Epic sequel. Incredible showcase for UE4 and Xbox One X, great story, great sound and a perfect innovation on the core game mechanics.

The only thing I absolutely hate about this game, is that the franchise went from 4 player campaign co-op, down to 2. That kind of sucks for longtime fans of Gears games. Horde mode is great too.

It failed to build connection between players and the characters as they were too shallow except Marcus Fenix. The games starts with fighting against robots, and it doesn't feel as good as killing the real monsters, and I was afraid the game would keep that narrative of outlaws against the government robotic army. Fortunately it didn't and the game got significantly better after the initial chapters. It was a lot more fun to play as the gameplay diversified from chapter to chapter and it was good, but not excellent. They could have done more, but I think they preferred to keep it safe. Probably the risky part they'd dared to make was the robot thing and that was awkward enough. After finishing the campaign I thought to myself: "Hm, nice". It wasn't spectacular, but it was good enough. But after trying the horde mode with my friends, I instantly knew that the game they have built was not focusing at all on the campaign. And I felt a bit disappointed, not by the multiplayer cause it is a lot of fun, but by the notion that I would never be playing a good gears of war campaign anymore. Their focus are on service and online play, not narratives. I feel that if want good narratives I should go look somewhere away from Microsoft. Expand

So their top priority was proving to fans that they can make a Gears of War game as good as Epic and in that sense, they executed flawlessly.

    Game Genre

    Third-Person Cover Shooter

    Story

One issue people seem to have is, the series is no longer about Marcus, Dom, Baird or Augustus. It’s now about the next generation, JD (Marcus’ son), Kait and Del. The fourth member of the team is a spoiler so I won’t go into who that is.

The entire game's premise is Kait’s mother was taken by the enemy and the team's goal is to get her back. So even though the protagonist is JD, the main story ended up being about a side character.

    Favorite Character

I don’t really know who my favorite character is, none of the 3 really stood out to me.

JD (James Dominic Fenix)-He reminds me a lot of Nathan Drake but specifically Uncharted 1 Nathan Drake. Few jokes here and there but for the most part a character that is not developed.

Kait Diaz-She seems like the most self-serious which in fairness to her a very serious thing has happened to her but even before that she was too serious. It’s my main issue with Lara Croft from the rebooted Tomb Raider series. Lighten up a little bit.

Del Walker-He’s best friends with JD and that’s all there is to say about Del. Occasionally he and JD have a few quips but for the most part he’s a very bland character.

    Puzzles

    No

    Gameplay

Gears of War is not the creator of cover based shooters but it is the poster child.

    Bosses

There are bosses but I have never liked the boss battles in the Gears of War franchise. Since a majority of the enemies are already bullet sponges, the boss battles where the enemy has more health doesn’t really improve the game. Then there are the bosses where there is a specific gimmick and my biggest issue with previous entries is the game never did a good job of letting you know what the gimmick actually was. I can’t take tell you how many boss battles I went and started shooting the enemy and I don’t know if I’m correctly widdling the health down on this boss. Its just trial and error and eventually figure it out. The other issue is, once you figure out the gimmick of what you need to do, it’s typically not fun executing it.

This game does a good job of making it clear what you need to do but the issue is, its typically just not that much fun. Because often times the boss has a ton of health so its time consuming of just dumping a lot of bullets into the boss. But its not just that, you also have to shoot specifics area of the boss which is also not a lot of fun because what happens is you’re standing around waiting for the boss to open up, fire into the specific area. then go back to waiting. Keep doing this for 5 minutes and eventually you’re done.

    Mission/Level Design

The games gameplay loop is very indicative of previous Gears of War games. Cut scene, then back to gameplay where you walk into an area. Combat arena and then once all the enemies have been killed you hear a sound that sounds like a gong. This lets you know that you have killed all enemies and now it’s time to move onto the next area. The entire game is killing enemies and cutscenes. So if you like the shooting in this game then you’re going to consider it a good game, if you’re not into the shooting then you’re not going to like it.

    Mechanical

    No issues, it ran perfectly.

Ok so a lot of people spend way more time on the multiplayer aspect and what's always been special about Gears to me has been the split screen co-op and Horde mode.

They've made the commendable decision to retain split screen co-op at a time when many other titles are moving away from it, but there are some serious issues with Horde.

Firstly the new Horde is much more complex than the old version which admittedly adds depth but it also means that playing in public games is often a waste of time. In the old Gears you could have coped with a player on your team not pulling their weight but now this is magnified. If a critical team member (Scout/Engineer) leaves the game or doesn't pull their weight it quickly becomes very frustrating and impossible to progress.

They've also had server problems ongoing since launch but have become exceptionally bad in the last week. GoW 3 had it's fair share of issues too, but what we're seeing now is much worse. I'm assuming they'll get these sorted eventually, if they don't I would have given this game a 4, based solely on the short campaign.

The online runs at a smooth 60 fps, and the game offers a competitive list of game modes for fun with your friends. The ranking system rewards victories and performances, and in my experience, does a decent job at ranking you against others with similar skill. There are a variety of weapons in the game that lead to some interesting game play, for you will find yourself rushing to claim power weapons like the Dropshot or Embar, but you need to know how to use them in order to be effective. Character models are well-made, although the swarm are sorely lacking in unique models - which are to be added with legacy locust characters eventually.

Online is awesome but is not without its limitations. The new ranking lobbies seem to act up and disconnect prior to the match start, which is only minor because you can still get into a game with moderate ease. Most combat issues arise with the gnasher shotgun - essentially the main weapon of Gears of War.

The shotgun tends to be inconsistent, where many people have reported firing point-blank on enemies and doing little to no damage. The coalition has claimed to have addressed this in the march update but so far I have seen little change. Overall the shotgun is manageable, but you will find yourself in situations where it fails you. There are times when I have shot people in the arm or leg and I have seen blood splatter but the enemy has taken no damage. I know this because when someone kills you, there is a damage output shown as to how much damage you had done to your enemy before they killed you. I have shot people 2-3 times with the shotgun, been killed by those people, and then the game told me that I only hit them once. This may be a hit-box issue, but it remains to cleared up. Although there are various character models with small and large builds, the coalition has stated that the hit-boxes remain equal. This could lead to illusions with the gnasher.

Some game modes offer player spawn-protection which can be abused. Sometimes a player will spawn close to enemies with over six seconds of protection. That player will sprint up and kill others while just soaking-bullets. Other times you can be cheated by having people spawn behind you when the spawns swap.

I am not too big into horde, but it can be a fun and interesting game mode to play with your friends. It can be used to increase your online level as well. It only runs at 30 fps, which pales to the 60 fps online visuals, but is fun otherwise.

The story-mode also runs at 30 fps, but provides a simple transition for new characters to enter into the universe. Old Legends return, and seem to outshine the slightly-generic "new gang", but they prove to be capable fighters. The story doe not take any risks, but in turn it does not present any failures - its a fun additional 6-8 hours of content - even more if you have the guts for insane mode. The one major drawback is that its only two-player co-op, which is down two players from Gears 3. Microsoft has had a history of cutting out co-op features like this in games, similar to there being no split-screen co-op in Halo 5: Guardians.

Overall, Gears of War 4 is a unique and stylized shooter that provides a challenge for the avid gamer. It is difficult to play, so I would not recommend it for the pure recreational players. It can frustrate you at times, but it will provide enough rich blood and guts to keep you playing for days.

At first, horde was fun enough. We had classes, we had some new maps, and it was a new Gears. But the problem is a core tenant in the new Gears design: microtransactions. Horde is all about the grind of finding cards and leveling up, and you do it all through microtransactions. I won't go into much detail, but their microtransactions are terribly setup: you pay credits for a loot box that gives you a chance of discovering a useful card. It's a lotto system through and through, and it sucks.

These days, at best it's more of a chore to play Horde. The team that took over the Gears franchise are very amateur, there's been multiple game breaking bugs, broken skins, skeezy microtransactions, and false marketing from them to ruin the franchise. I won't get into all the details, but I suggest if you really need to play another Gears, get it on sale or used. It's not worth $60.

Overall, if you're a fan of the series, the game barely edges out Judgment and it's well below the trilogy (1, 2, 3). If you're new to the series, I wouldn't bother.

The Coalition has managed to successfully bring every great elements from previous games into a new setting. Whether you go for single-player, multiplayer or horde mode, GoW4 hast plenty to offer.
