Gears of War 4 is a beauty. The graphics are incredible and successfully utilize the Xbox One's power. The story mode in Gears is what draws me in, and Gears 4 does not disappoint. Multiplayer plays well besides some issue finding matches, and the inclusion of loot boxes can be ignored

The bugs really ruined this game for me, I was always a Gears fan because of the online but it is near unplayable and with the bugs there is no reward.

Gears of War 4 is the second to worst Gears game there is (Judgement is the worst). The story and multiplayer components are so generic and boring. The fun of the Gears franchise has been completely stripped and replaced with a massive, dull, grind-fest. Do yourself a favor and skip this if you have it in your backlog.

Multiplayer of GoW4 is fun. Now for the campaign, it's just boring, characters are empty and lifeless, I couldn't give a flying f about any of them, the story felt really weak, I mean you shoot generic robots for about 20% of the campaign, I guess the developers were out of ideas.

I'll start off with the pros. The game itself had great graphics, it was a beautiful game at most points, however due to the original XBOX power, it did stutter at points. The gameplay was reasonably fluid, and nice to control. The game itself had great graphics, it was a beautiful game at most points, however due to the original XBOX power, it did stutter at points. The gameplay was reasonably fluid, and nice to control. However... at some points when I wanted to simply move to another placed or crouch there was so many things the A button did that the character I was controlling was going to the wrong places and doing the wrong things, moreover simply jumping over a hurdle felt arduous and clunky. Also, at some points in the game graphics were so textured I could see the pixels... a cheap way of increasing FPS. With this being said there were a reasonable amount of stuff to unlock for multiplayer and skins, however I never felt rewarded as the multiplayer had limited maps and they all felt extremely similar to the other ones, which after a while completely put me off the multiplayer.

The new tower defense sort of implementation with hordes of enemies charging you down while you spray at them with your allies, was fun, and a welcome aspect to the game. However they were ultimately the same with different places they were set in, and felt unfinished when I was playing them. The story was reasonably interesting however apart from nostalgia of a former character in the franchise I never felt connected to any of the characters and felt very similar to a lot of other characters in other games, thus making the story lack luster. However with some nicely put together set pieces, is the only thing that boosts the score a little bit.

Overall the games singleplayer shooting aspect I would say is it's best aspect, making progress through hordes of enemies, keeping it at it's routes at what a gears of war game is, with interesting and huge bosses, I felt the bosses were a little easier in this game, never with a real challenge, especially after chasing after them for most of the campaign. If you're a fan of shooters, this is a good game, however if you're looking for an engaging story, it can be found elsewhere.

There are few games that capture the electric, pulse racing feeling of softening up a blood thirsty monster from behind cover before charging towards the enemy and slicing it in half with a chainsaw. That originality is what makes the Gears franchise so special. Sure there are an abundance of third person shooters but none manage to incorporate strategy, fluid gameplay and creative weapons in the same way as Gears Of War. So you can understand where my expectation were for number four and I'm glad to say that neither I nor my heart were disappointed.
After a series of flashbacks to the previous games that proves as your tutorial Gears 4 drops you right in the middle of a destructive, wisecracking, jolly party of friends as they launch a raid on your typical Military corporation. Gears 4 embraces taking new strides and the first of many is with the new enemies called deebee's. Functionally they are the same as the familiar locusts' but manage to showcase the cleverness and sharpness of the Game's AI. They rush from behind cover, flank you, eliminate your friends first so that there's is nobody to revive you and use the new weapons effectively. Many of these weapons cater to the two different types of players. Ones who opt for close combat will find double firing shotguns and machine guns with a large ammo capacity. But ones who are more reclusive shall find plenty of Snipe Rifles, grenades and some Special Weapons like the Buzzsaw, which literally fires saw blades. Some weapons have great strengths but also weaknesses such as having to mount them in place. But what this does is make you use your strategy effectively to beat the level.
Boss fights in this game are also handles quite well, most of them require you to shoot weak points before delivering some classic heavy damage. But a lot of them have their own traits that make it harder for them to fight. Some might try and pounce on top of you while others will hover above your head.
As for the story in the game I found it to be the weaker side of things, I do enjoy many of the characters wether it be old man Marcus or the loveable Oscar, who is not hungover but still drunk. I found that most characters actually progressing and evolving as the Story continued which was a genuine surprise. That being said the ending to this game is unfortunately non existent. The game seems to abruptly end on a bitter note with no suggestion of what the characters are to do next.
Thankfully Multiplayer is still a stand out feature in this game, matchmaking is quick and easy and the game offers a variety of game modes with fast paced and intense action. Success will depend on your reflexes, mobility and use of weapons. Thankfully the game includes new moves that make Gameplay more interesting such as the ability to vault over cover while an enemy is on the other side. This temporarily dazes them and allows for a swift knife kill.
Even with the xbox one X on the horizon, gears of war has never looked better. The explosive and gory gameplay visually shines like a detailed painting and all the destroyed beauty of towns and facilities you explore adds to the atmosphere.
I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy this game, but I would be also lying if I said it was the best in the series. I do think that the Story and some minor gameplay tropes are weak but given all the good in it there is no lie in saying that I enjoyed the blood, guts, gore and so much more.

It failed to build connection between players and the characters as they were too shallow except Marcus Fenix. The games starts with fighting against robots, and it doesn't feel as good as killing the real monsters, and I was afraid the game would keep that narrative of outlaws against the government robotic army. Fortunately it didn't and the game got significantly better after the initial chapters. It was a lot more fun to play as the gameplay diversified from chapter to chapter and it was good, but not excellent. They could have done more, but I think they preferred to keep it safe. Probably the risky part they'd dared to make was the robot thing and that was awkward enough. After finishing the campaign I thought to myself: "Hm, nice". It wasn't spectacular, but it was good enough. But after trying the horde mode with my friends, I instantly knew that the game they have built was not focusing at all on the campaign. And I felt a bit disappointed, not by the multiplayer cause it is a lot of fun, but by the notion that I would never be playing a good gears of war campaign anymore. Their focus are on service and online play, not narratives. I feel that if want good narratives I should go look somewhere away from Microsoft. Expand

With "Gears of War 4", The Coalition have proved themselves worthy of inheriting the franchise from Epic Games. I'm sure it would make series creator Cliff Bleszinski proud. In many ways, this is the video game equivalent of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". It sets the stage up for another war between the COG and the Locust decades after the previous trilogy ended. Lighter in tone, but equally brutal as its predecessors, "Gears 4" is a good title that captures the classic feel of the series. While the campaign can get repetitive, it never ceases to be an entertaining action ride. The story follows Marcus Fenix's youthful son and his two best friends on a journey that eventually leads them into a conflict with a new generation of evolved Locust creatures.

The campaign relies more on cutscenes than ever before and the stunning CGI animation gives it a highly cinematic feel. I liked the new weapons which include a rifle that fires ricocheting saw blades and a submachine gun that resembles the SMG from "Halo 2". Gameplay is classic "Gears" with plenty of scripted events that are reminiscent of Hollywood action movies. The game also now features advanced enemy A.I. and a weather system that affects combat with strong winds and debris. The only disappointments come in a few "rinse and repeat" segments and the sudden ending to the story. It concludes very much like "The Matrix Reloaded" as the game just stops, rather than ending on a proper note.

The competitive multiplayer modes are standard "Gears" with some maps pulled from previous titles. More "Rainbow Six" than "Call of Duty", the matches rely on fast-paced, tactical action. Customization options are there, but limited to weapon and uniform skins. Some players will be more impressed with the new "Horde" mode. Horde 2.0 includes the soldier classes which were introduced in the "Judgment" prequel. As you rank up, the special abilities of each solider type are upgraded. There are 50 levels in Horde, but the difficulty quickly increases due to the more aggressive enemies who use advanced tactics to kill you. Both Horde and competitive multiplayer include the new card system which either increase various stats or help you earn more points by completing challenges.

"Gears of War 4" is a satisfying title in the franchise. A massive improvement over "Gears of War: Judgment", it still doesn't best the original trilogy in terms of creativity, but it's a great start to a new series of games. I especially liked the campaign's humor which seems to be inspired by "Guardians of the Galaxy" or Sony's "Uncharted" series. Long time fans will definitely feel at home with this and newbies will find it to be a real blast. Overall, I'd rank this with an 8.4 out of 10.

The multiplayer performs well and is good and probably one of the better Gears multiplayer (top 3 behind 3 and in front of the remaster of 1). It really just comes down to if the series really needed this. I was very excited initially, but looking at Judgment and GOWUE made me think that maybe the franchise was doing this because it wants to appease a new crowd of people. Considering the veterans have mostly been long and gone from the franchise, enticing newcomers can be quite challenging and seeing the Gears legacy be brought down after 3 is very problematic. Gears of War 4 rekindles hope for the series, but it needs to overcome the stupid practices it has and really embrace new ideas if it has any hope of being the strong flagship it once was. Expand

Fun game. A new series of fresh faces and it was pretty fun. I do think they did rehash a lot of the older stuff in here and understandably. I just felt there wasn't much new here. Still fun multiplayer though.

Worst Gears game to date by far. Lackluster campaign, glitchy horde mode and absolutely terrible multiplayer servers and weapon tuning. It's sad what Microsoft and "The Coalition" have done to my favorite franchise. They seem more focused on squeezing money from fans than pleasing them! Content over quality is BS!

Gears of War is not a BAD game, there's just a lot of major things The Coalition missed, that Epic got right on their first try.
I do suggest Gears of War to anyone who's never played it, but I also suggest the 360 trilogy more than 4. While the story was phenomenal, TC keeps on making stupid decisions, that negatively affect the player.
Good game at first, aggravating afterwards. Sorry

At first, horde was fun enough. We had classes, we had some new maps, and it was a new Gears. But the problem is a core tenant in the new Gears design: microtransactions. Horde is all about the grind of finding cards and leveling up, and you do it all through microtransactions. I won't go into much detail, but their microtransactions are terribly setup: you pay credits for a loot box that gives you a chance of discovering a useful card. It's a lotto system through and through, and it sucks.

These days, at best it's more of a chore to play Horde. The team that took over the Gears franchise are very amateur, there's been multiple game breaking bugs, broken skins, skeezy microtransactions, and false marketing from them to ruin the franchise. I won't get into all the details, but I suggest if you really need to play another Gears, get it on sale or used. It's not worth $60.

Overall, if you're a fan of the series, the game barely edges out Judgment and it's well below the trilogy (1, 2, 3). If you're new to the series, I wouldn't bother.

The sections outside of these parts are great. The soundtrack is awesome but the stand out is the art direction. It's a Dystopian world but still amazingly beautiful. I am legit blown away by how good it looks. It's kind of similar to the way I felt with the Last of Us. Is this really an Xbox One game? It looks like it would be closer to a Scorpio game. I'm extremely excited for the future of Gears now. After Judgement I was a bit scared. I also love the new addition of weapons. Everyone brings up the buzzkill but that is the worst one in my opinion lol. I really love the Overkill shotgun and the Embar. Those are awesome. Along with the new weapons, the gameplay just feels super smooth. I can't complain one bit about the gameplay. Best of the series.

It took me a bit to get used to the reload button being the RB but I really enjoyed that fancy reload mechanic. When you reload using RB and wait until the perfect moment you can press RB again for some kind of "super" reload, giving the reloaded bullets a buff in damage. I can't think of 1 other game I have ever played that does that, so naturally I was surprised. I only know bits and pieces of the Gears universe since I never had a chance to play the original but In GoW 4 you play as Marcus Pheonix's son JD, as he helps his friend (Possibly girlfriend?) get her mother back from the locusts. The story is good, not great as it gets really predictable. The graphics are pretty incredible. I always thought that the PS4 had superior graphics but this game looks as good as anything I have played on the PS4 except for maybe uncharted 4 but gameplay is king and Gears of War 4 definitely has fantastic gameplay. The sound is good but kinda forgettable. Nothing really pops. Multiplayer is fun for a bit but I actually prefer the horde mode. This is where you team up with other players to defend your position against as many waves of enemies as you can. All in all Gears of War 4 is worth a look if you are a fan of cover based shooters. GoW4 fails at that miserably, it uses cheapness to kill you not difficulty. The checkpoints in the game are rare and scattered so when I get to them I shouldn't constantly get spawn killed. I have lost count of how many times I get spawn killed right at the standard designated checkpoints. I'm on a checkpoint now where I get 3 seconds to get cover before the firing starts but it told me to use a weapon crate I spawn next to and press a button to put up cover. But because I spawn in combat I cant and I never even got to open the crate and get a gun until the scene was over. I shouldn't spawn in combat then have to go through 4 separate huge firefights to finally get the next checkpoint that will also spawn me in combat. The AI is really bad too. My coop companion is constantly getting in my line of fire or stealing my cover spot from me, all the while never killing anything. The only thing the companions do well is crawl to you when they need to be revived lol. On the upside the graphics are great. However the controls can feel clunky and leads to me entirely avoiding a few weapons. Expand

The online runs at a smooth 60 fps, and the game offers a competitive list of game modes for fun with your friends. The ranking system rewards victories and performances, and in my experience, does a decent job at ranking you against others with similar skill. There are a variety of weapons in the game that lead to some interesting game play, for you will find yourself rushing to claim power weapons like the Dropshot or Embar, but you need to know how to use them in order to be effective. Character models are well-made, although the swarm are sorely lacking in unique models - which are to be added with legacy locust characters eventually.

Online is awesome but is not without its limitations. The new ranking lobbies seem to act up and disconnect prior to the match start, which is only minor because you can still get into a game with moderate ease. Most combat issues arise with the gnasher shotgun - essentially the main weapon of Gears of War.

The shotgun tends to be inconsistent, where many people have reported firing point-blank on enemies and doing little to no damage. The coalition has claimed to have addressed this in the march update but so far I have seen little change. Overall the shotgun is manageable, but you will find yourself in situations where it fails you. There are times when I have shot people in the arm or leg and I have seen blood splatter but the enemy has taken no damage. I know this because when someone kills you, there is a damage output shown as to how much damage you had done to your enemy before they killed you. I have shot people 2-3 times with the shotgun, been killed by those people, and then the game told me that I only hit them once. This may be a hit-box issue, but it remains to cleared up. Although there are various character models with small and large builds, the coalition has stated that the hit-boxes remain equal. This could lead to illusions with the gnasher.

Some game modes offer player spawn-protection which can be abused. Sometimes a player will spawn close to enemies with over six seconds of protection. That player will sprint up and kill others while just soaking-bullets. Other times you can be cheated by having people spawn behind you when the spawns swap.

I am not too big into horde, but it can be a fun and interesting game mode to play with your friends. It can be used to increase your online level as well. It only runs at 30 fps, which pales to the 60 fps online visuals, but is fun otherwise.

The story-mode also runs at 30 fps, but provides a simple transition for new characters to enter into the universe. Old Legends return, and seem to outshine the slightly-generic "new gang", but they prove to be capable fighters. The story doe not take any risks, but in turn it does not present any failures - its a fun additional 6-8 hours of content - even more if you have the guts for insane mode. The one major drawback is that its only two-player co-op, which is down two players from Gears 3. Microsoft has had a history of cutting out co-op features like this in games, similar to there being no split-screen co-op in Halo 5: Guardians.

Overall, Gears of War 4 is a unique and stylized shooter that provides a challenge for the avid gamer. It is difficult to play, so I would not recommend it for the pure recreational players. It can frustrate you at times, but it will provide enough rich blood and guts to keep you playing for days.

Lookswise it did impress me considering the crappy hardware it was running on. The game uses dynamic resolution and on occasion when things got heavy you could see a drop in resolution and some tearing.
But the biggest issue when it comes to the singleplayer and the horde mode with the xbox one version is the low framerate. The game runs at 30fps except for VS multiplayer. It does hold 30 for the most part by sacrificing resolution when need be.
The lower visuals I can take, but it is just not up to par in such a game to run such low frames. Especially coming from the buttery smooth pc version playing this feelt like a substantial sacrifice to gameplay and I did not feel enticed to keep playing.

As for the game itself it is a Gears game, no more no less. It doesn't surprise and innovate really but it doesn't disappoint either.
The shooting and action is solid albeit a bit repetetive, the whole game is moving from one area to the next doing the exact same thing. The game does not reward exploration and it doesn't mix the formula or gameplay style for variety. But what is there is good.
Story is okay but got an abrupt ending wich left alot unexplained. I feel they could have fleshed out some bits a bit more.
The singleplayer took me around 8-9h to complete on normal. Quite short. But there is replayability here. I will play the campaign again on a higher difficulty in coop once my friend gets the game. And then there is multiplayer VS or Horde mode to expand your playtime if you are into that.

I would say that if you are a SP guy only and the multiplayer or coop does not interest you that much, then what this game offers might be a bit lacking and I'd rate it at around a 6/10 due to the short campaign and repetetive gameplay. But if you are into coop/multiplayer and because of the fact that it not only offers coop, it offers a full campaign coop to boot AND local coop even on the pc version... I will crank that score up a bit. However I also subtracted one point from this game on this xbox version compared to my score on the pc version simply because of the impact the **** performance on xbox one has in terms of gameplay. It is substantial.

In the end I would recomend the game on pc first and foremost, but also on xbox one if you have no other choice. It's play anywhere, so you get both versions regardless without any extra cost.

Ok so a lot of people spend way more time on the multiplayer aspect and what's always been special about Gears to me has been the split screen co-op and Horde mode.

They've made the commendable decision to retain split screen co-op at a time when many other titles are moving away from it, but there are some serious issues with Horde.

Firstly the new Horde is much more complex than the old version which admittedly adds depth but it also means that playing in public games is often a waste of time. In the old Gears you could have coped with a player on your team not pulling their weight but now this is magnified. If a critical team member (Scout/Engineer) leaves the game or doesn't pull their weight it quickly becomes very frustrating and impossible to progress.

They've also had server problems ongoing since launch but have become exceptionally bad in the last week. GoW 3 had it's fair share of issues too, but what we're seeing now is much worse. I'm assuming they'll get these sorted eventually, if they don't I would have given this game a 4, based solely on the short campaign.

Although not the best Gears of War ever released, the fourth franchise title does justice to the Gears of War name. One of the best exclusive of the Xbox One is a must-have purchase for all Console and Saga fans.

If you are looking for sophisticated gameplay and rich story, look elsewhere.
Otherwise, pretty nice online shooter with very repetitive gameplay, which can be only fun to play with friends. Game mechanics is not completely polished, sometimes it is difficult to jump over obstacles, as well as character sometimes "hides" behind walls, being almost a meter off it.

Well don't know why people are giving this game a 0 its not some utter **** ball and I for hell know it isn't no god tier 10 either. I would say Gears of War 4 is a solid 8/10 with a good story that revolves a new cast with cameos of our beloved Delta Squad.

Some pros of the game are great graphics, great gameplay, there is replay value in this game, with the all new yet familiar Horde 3.0

Otimo jogo, continuando a historia de gears of war.

If the 5v5 formula to multiplayer that Microsoft likes to spam with its action titles is something you like. then this game's for you.

    Cons:
The cover mechanic in vs is janky but if you know how to utilise it then you have the advantage. This makes it HELL for first timers and the average XBL child/namecaller/overall **** will probably give you issues for trying to learn this game. Once learned however its a great multiplayer. Especially with friends.

Just finished playing Titanfall 2s', Battlefield, and Gears 4 campaigns and Gears 4 is by far the most enjoyable. Sure the writing is average but no worse Titanfall's. Gears 4 >>Titanfall 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>Battlefield 1.

Online is a lot of fun and offers a lot of different modes including horde which is a mini-game in itself. The graphics are incredible (some of the best this year) and it runs great on both xb1 and PC. Definitely one of the better games released this year.

Meh,It's more Gears, and that's all it is.I'd argue that it's better than judgement but nowhere near as good as the first 2.I hated the first act with a passion. The almost endless waves of robotic enemies were extremely boring.Multi is fine, but you'll be playing with either noobs or shotgun surgeons.Forgettable.

Gears of War 4 is a welcome return for a great franchise. The campaign is a blast to play, with plenty of nostalgia for veterans. The multiplayer is refreshing, with dodgeball being a highlight. Horde mode is also as fun as it's always been.

The game is worth original trilogy, good looking, fun but maybe a bit short. I feel it should be a lot more fight. This way it looks like isolated mini war, not some global danger situation. Btw characters hair looks bad.
Multiplayer is ok but it is just fast finger shotgun fest, very difficult one.

Not happening, only campaigne, private, and horde modes. Lobbies aren't rolling, meaning you got to quit after every round and find new matches. They took out the fun guns like sawed off, digger, and mortar. In place of those there are a bunch of non-creative boring guns that we have no interest in picking it up. Maps are brown and rusty all over, not pretty. I get bored of this game after 3-4 matches, as opposed to GOW3, i can play that for hours. I suggest newcomers to wait until they do updates to address all the issue then buy it. Right now it's a snooze fest. Expand

You, as the titular COG soldier JD Fenix, have to infiltrate the Swarm, taking down hordes of beasts and security robots while hiding behind conveniently placed cover walls.
The game itself is super enjoyable, thanks mainly to the well-tuned controls. On paper, there’s not too much difference between the way The Coalition has approached Gears 4 and the way Epic approached the other games in the franchise. There's a button for firing, one for reloading, and another for weapon-switching. Fairly standard stuff.

Where Gears 4 beats the previous games in the franchise is in the polish applied to the controls. Movement is smooth and accurate across the board, while the fact that most combat takes place behind walls means there’s very little strafing and shooting on the run. There’s also no need for extra buttons - cover is handled almost automatically, there’s very little close-combat elements, and absolutely no dashing. You can still roadie run in the new game. The simple controls has the desirable effect of keeping things manageable, even when there are several enemies all gunning for your COG blood.

Everything about the game, from the graphics and controls right through to the sound, oozes class. Unbelievably, even the voice acting is entertaining, so while the beautiful orchestral soundtrack does get a little tiresome after the 4th hour into the campaign, it’s still cranking the volume to hear the great exchanges between JD and his sarcastic friend, Del.

Naturally one the big draws is the graphics, there are a lot of very good things to say about the visuals, the textures are detailed and the animations are flawless. The levels and set pieces are very good looking and have an excellent amount of variety. That’s not to say that there isn't a little repetition in the levels, but they are gorgeous and they do vary enough for me to not get tired of any one setting. Set-pieces such as a boss ‘battle’ with a huge swarmac and the excellent variety in the enemies you encounter keep you on your toes throughout.

There are very few moments in Gears 4 when overall ambition exceeds the final execution. Gears 4 remains the best attempt to recreate the third-person action game we’ve seen on current gen hardware to date, proving that you don’t necessarily have to ditch a genre just because the formula got semi-stale 5 years ago

The Coalition has managed to successfully bring every great elements from previous games into a new setting. Whether you go for single-player, multiplayer or horde mode, GoW4 hast plenty to offer. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is the best in the series thus far; and despite shortcomings in the story and development of characters, GoW4 is easily one of the best third-person shooters of this generation.
