Gears of War is a bit like Star Wars in a sense it has a pretty damn good original trilogy with people arguing over the first or the second being the best in the series. The series thankfully has only one **** prequel that somehow has the trappings of what made the originals good, but missing the point entirely. All this leads to one conclusion then. The series thankfully has only one **** prequel that somehow has the trappings of what made the originals good, but missing the point entirely. All this leads to one conclusion then. Gears of War 4 is the Force Awakens of the Gears of War series. It brings back the characters you love with adding new likeable fun characters as replacements. Has a new yet in a way old familiar enemy, and is all about you getting reintroduced into the world of Gears. I know a hell of an intro to get into this review, but anyways B-rod here, and I love the **** out of Gears of War 4.

When I first saw this game I thought, “oh great they are going to milk Gears of War for all it’s worth.” I was right technically, but the team at The Coalition took some time and care into making this game, and made it a fun experience. The game’s story is about Marcus Fenix’s son James Fenix and his two squad/friends embarking on a mission to find out what happened to their village which was attacked by these unknown creatures. The mystery is not deep but engaging, but what really sold this game to me was the characters. James, Kait, and Del they were charming, funny and just overall characters you wanted to follow. I like Marcus Fenix, but he was always a cardboard cutout Conan type character. James is a funny likeable rogue who you’d want to follow long after the game is over. I can’t tell you how much I dug this story and character especially since I thought this game would be just another Judgement fail.

The gameplay is exactly what sequels are supposed to be. It keeps the core gameplay the same, and just adds upon it. It doesn’t retool how the gameplay works making it less fun entirely Gears of War Judgement. (I’m JUDGING the hell out of that game right now). Adding in the weather as a hazard while you fight is such a kickass obstacle that I honestly never knew I needed. The worst part of this game is the beginning where the first two act of the game you’re fighting robots. These **** things are not only boring to kill, but are bullet sponges to the point of annoyance. Once you fight the real enemy of the game which are called the Swarm that’s where you get into that good ole Gears we know and love. Even the Swarm have creatures that are interesting to fight and keep you on your toes. They force you not to just sit there shooting at them with your Lancer until they explode. It sorta felt like a fight in Bloodborne with how often you were forced to dodge and shoot. The game looks like a Gears game. It’s the best looking by far, but nothing that is unfamiliar as it were.

Overall if you never played a Gears of War game before I wouldn’t recommend it because I feel like you’d be missing something that the typical Gears player would see. If you are a Gears fan, but were turned off by Judgement by all means get this game it is my favorite of the games since Gears of War 2 came out. I did not expect to love this as much as I did and I have to give it 4.5/5. If it wasn’t for that first two acts fighting nothing but robots I would’ve gave it a perfect score. Until next time folks.

The Coalition brings to us a game that takes place 25 years after the original trilogy, and they do it very well, with new faces that try to be the next delta squad, the son of Marcus Fenix as the protagonist and a new enemy to confront, called The Swarm. A good way to continue this iconic saga.

While I know that Coalition paid a lot of attention to the multiplayer as a lot of game developers do these days I was very satisfied with the main campaign. Gameplay is largely the same as it was for the early titles. Gears has always been a shooting gallery with cover tactic mechanics but its among the best shooting galleries you'd find out there on the market. New additions to the single player like a tower defense mode against AI wave attacks. Some new interesting weapons are added to the roster but the classics are also brought back in (torque bow FTW).

I used to like GOW when it first came out, but the series got worse and worse... I tried playing this game, but the gameplay was incredibly repetitive (wave after wave after wave of enemies), the story was BS and the graphics aren't my style anyway (I could overlook this in the first GOW since the game itself was good, but now it's no longer the case)... this was the last GOW I tried...

After passing you catch yourself on the moment that the 4 part is the best in the series if you forget the unique 2 part. Gameplay has been transformed by the kind of little things that most developers don 't pay attention to, an idea with the interaction of different items on the map during a storm is beautiful. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played previous gears games and decided to catch up before 5 came out and actually finish 4. I am very disappointed. This game introduces anything new in terms of game play, the same clunky controls that were considered great in 2007 are not that great now. The biggest thing I hate in GOW series is the fact that running locks you into only going forward. This is a horrible mechanic and should have evolved as the games came out over the years. But what made gears great in the past was it's story, now though we are treated to an absolute lame story where you fight robots and then the drones from previous games. NOTHING has changed, same area to area combat until you get to a boss where you shoot a glowing body part until it is dead. The scale of the war has been scaled down so there are hardly any epic moments in the game.

In many ways, this is the video game equivalent of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". It sets the stage up for another war between the COG and the Locust decades after the previous trilogy ended. Lighter in tone, but equally brutal as its predecessors, "Gears 4" is a good title that captures the classic feel of the series. While the campaign can get repetitive, it never ceases to be an entertaining action ride. The story follows Marcus Fenix's youthful son and his two best friends on a journey that eventually leads them into a conflict with a new generation of evolved Locust creatures.

The campaign relies more on cutscenes than ever before and the stunning CGI animation gives it a highly cinematic feel. I liked the new weapons which include a rifle that fires ricocheting saw blades and a submachine gun that resembles the SMG from "Halo 2". Gameplay is classic "Gears" with plenty of scripted events that are reminiscent of Hollywood action movies. The game also now features advanced enemy A.I. and a weather system that affects combat with strong winds and debris. The only disappointments come in a few "rinse and repeat" segments and the sudden ending to the story. It concludes very much like "The Matrix Reloaded" as the game just stops, rather than ending on a proper note.

The competitive multiplayer modes are standard "Gears" with some maps pulled from previous titles. More "Rainbow Six" than "Call of Duty", the matches rely on fast-paced, tactical action. Customization options are there, but limited to weapon and uniform skins. Some players will be more impressed with the new "Horde" mode. Horde 2.0 includes the soldier classes which were introduced in the "Judgment" prequel. As you rank up, the special abilities of each solider type are upgraded. There are 50 levels in Horde, but the difficulty quickly increases due to the more aggressive enemies who use advanced tactics to kill you. Both Horde and competitive multiplayer include the new card system which either increase various stats or help you earn more points by completing challenges.

"Gears of War 4" is a satisfying title in the franchise. A massive improvement over "Gears of War: Judgment", it still doesn't best the original trilogy in terms of creativity, but it's a great start to a new series of games. I especially liked the campaign's humor which seems to be inspired by "Guardians of the Galaxy" or Sony's "Uncharted" series. Long time fans will definitely feel at home with this and newbies will find it to be a real blast. Overall, I'd rank this with an 8.4 out of 10.

Half the gunplay is terrible because there's little hit feedback, enemies are generally spongy unless you play on Casual, the fabricator is a sad gimmick that was quickly thrown together, you use the same weapons throughout most of the game because most heavy weapons that aren't terrible are quickly discarded by the game.
The AI is atrocious and more hindrance than help. The one-liners are generally very dumb, but that seems to be the target audience.
The performance is fine most of the game, cutscenes come in choppy 30 fps while the rest easily goes 60. The game has 2, maybe 3 tile sets, but somehow comes with 130GiB that I have no idea how they filled, every damn shooter with more gameplay, more world, more characters, more sounds, items etc is 20% the size.
Few crashes, but even having them after this time is a sad state of affairs.

Clunky controls, bad story, repetitive game play....enter area, get ambushed, clear area and hear the same tired guitar riff from xbox 360 era. I played this series on 360 and hadn't touched it in years because of the rinse and repeat process I mentioned above. Picked up part 4 for cheap, appalled to see that is the first 3 games rehashed into a shiny new coat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Best in the series for me. Can't wait till Gears 5! And just wanted to put this out there, for all the xbox fanboys complaining the 0's are from Sony fans only......Let's not forget that you all do the same thing with every PS exclusive. So if you don't want Sony fans trashing Xbox games, then don't trash Sony games. Simple.

Gears was always a roller coaster experience and this one is definitely a hell of a roller coaster experience. Great presentation, great gameplay, great levels both in terms of overall design and variety.
My only gripe about the game is the ending. It is not bad but it gave me the feeling that half of the game is missing. I get that this is supposed to be the beginning of a new saga, but

The difference between Nathan Drake and the forgettable protagonist in Gears of War is that Nathan Drake's banter is funny. The other characters are similar modeled after checking all the boxes, like Poochie from that old Simpson's episode. The best part of the game is when grumpy old Marcus Fenix comes back to complain about the robot army destroying his tomatoes.

Some of the set pieces in Gears of War 4 are pure triple A magic. The new mechanic is wind. You have to find cover from it, use destructible objects to take advantage of it, and then dodge lightning. (The world of Gears of War makes no sense.) The new enemies are robots. You might think you would start with the same old pasty faced grubs and move up to robots. No. You start with the new and interesting enemy and move down to the same old same old from 4 other Gears of War games. (Lest we forget Gears of War: Judgment. I know I did. Totally skipped that entire game.) Weapons are also the same old same old until you get the giant robot to pilot.

This is where Gears of War 4 is both amazing and a lesson in missed opportunities. Rather than spending hours upon hours crouched behind chest high walls, you could be stomping around in a giant mech. Gears of War 2 knew this, and had players pilot flying monsters, walking monsters, giant drill platforms, a tank, and finally, a helicopter. Gears of War 4 is for the most part content with walking around slowly. The environment looks great. After Halo 5, the Xbox One needed a game that looked properly next gen. What Microsoft forgets is that I have a whole beautiful world outside my front door. What I want is escapism. Crouching behind cover is not escapism.

I did not bother with multi-player. The game is a few years old and the population is probably circling the drain. I never much cared for the slow paced multiplayer in the Xbox 360 days. Besides, I picked this game up for $5 and the campaign was enough to get my money's worth.

All-in-all, Gears of War 4 is a good game. 7/10 good. For this generation of derivative sequels and micro-transaction laden trip, a 7 out of 10 is almost the gold standard.

The only thing I absolutely hate about this game, is that the franchise went from 4 player campaign co-op, down to 2. That kind of sucks for longtime fans of Gears games. Horde mode is great too.

The Coalition really understood the previous game's mechanics and mastered them pretty well. New enemies are badass. They looks cool and punch hard. So their top priority was proving to fans that they can make a Gears of War game as good as Epic and in that sense, they executed flawlessly.

    Game Genre

    Third-Person Cover Shooter

    Story

One issue people seem to have is, the series is no longer about Marcus, Dom, Baird or Augustus. It’s now about the next generation, JD (Marcus’ son), Kait and Del. The fourth member of the team is a spoiler so I won’t go into who that is.

The entire game's premise is Kait’s mother was taken by the enemy and the team's goal is to get her back. So even though the protagonist is JD, the main story ended up being about a side character.

    Favorite Character

I don’t really know who my favorite character is, none of the 3 really stood out to me.

JD (James Dominic Fenix)-He reminds me a lot of Nathan Drake but specifically Uncharted 1 Nathan Drake. Few jokes here and there but for the most part a character that is not developed.

Kait Diaz-She seems like the most self-serious which in fairness to her a very serious thing has happened to her but even before that she was too serious. It’s my main issue with Lara Croft from the rebooted Tomb Raider series. Lighten up a little bit.

Del Walker-He’s best friends with JD and that’s all there is to say about Del. Occasionally he and JD have a few quips but for the most part he’s a very bland character.

    Puzzles

    No

    Gameplay

Gears of War is not the creator of cover based shooters but it is the poster child.

    Bosses

There are bosses but I have never liked the boss battles in the Gears of War franchise. Since a majority of the enemies are already bullet sponges, the boss battles where the enemy has more health doesn’t really improve the game. Then there are the bosses where there is a specific gimmick and my biggest issue with previous entries is the game never did a good job of letting you know what the gimmick actually was. I can’t take tell you how many boss battles I went and started shooting the enemy and I don’t know if I’m correctly widdling the health down on this boss. Its just trial and error and eventually figure it out. The other issue is, once you figure out the gimmick of what you need to do, it’s typically not fun executing it.

This game does a good job of making it clear what you need to do but the issue is, its typically just not that much fun. Because often times the boss has a ton of health so its time consuming of just dumping a lot of bullets into the boss. But its not just that, you also have to shoot specifics area of the boss which is also not a lot of fun because what happens is you’re standing around waiting for the boss to open up, fire into the specific area. then go back to waiting. Keep doing this for 5 minutes and eventually you’re done.

    Mission/Level Design

The games gameplay loop is very indicative of previous Gears of War games. Cut scene, then back to gameplay where you walk into an area. Combat arena and then once all the enemies have been killed you hear a sound that sounds like a gong. This lets you know that you have killed all enemies and now it’s time to move onto the next area. The entire game is killing enemies and cutscenes. So if you like the shooting in this game then you’re going to consider it a good game, if you’re not into the shooting then you’re not going to like it.

    Mechanical

    No issues, it ran perfectly.

Characters aren't fleshed at all out and the gameplay was stupid predictable. Walk around, open a door, a bunch of robots or drones drop from the sky or out of a gooey pit, kill them, rinse and repeat. Also, it's almost impossible to die since anytime you're near death one of your teammates revives you. There's no real "open world" play - you can't really explore beyond the straightforward bounds the game sets for you.

I wanted to like this game, but it failed on all levels outside of looking pretty outstanding. But it's just lipstick on a pig. Sad.

Since then, I've put 31 hours into the game, completing the campaign twice and reaching level 24 as of this review. After all this time, I've loved nearly everything of this game. This is not a perfect game, and probably should be an 8 or a 9, but I put a 10 to try to balance the score.

    Pros:
    1. Great gameplay if you are into gears or 3rd persons shooters.
    2. Very solid Campaign, that has great graphics and fairly interesting scenarios
    3. Marcus Phoenix returns!
    4. Multiplayer is some of the most fun of all time.
    5. Maybe Xbox's best Multiplayer game, aside from Halo MCC after its recent patches.

    Cons:
    1. Story plays it too safe and has a bit too many cliches.
    2. Microtransactions, quite a lot, that I am pretty sure are all cosmetic, at least I haven't seen anyone that gives you a competitive edge.
    3. Season pass

So overall, this game is worth it if you are able to look beyond the story, microtransactions/season pass. Well after all my praise, is this the best Gears of War? Well, simply put, I've only played this and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. This is by far better than Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in my opinion though.

Stunning graphics, good controls; short and kind of dumb story. I'm not a multiplayer kind of guy, so that part doesn't really interest me, I bored out of it after 45 minutes.

I'm not just disappointed with this game, I struck with how much I feel ripped off.

The story and character development is cheap, the multiplayer doesn't offer anything new or exciting, the horde mode is inaccessible for offline users, and the weapons are complete downgrades.

This game is an official nail in the coffin for this franchise to me.

Gears of War 4 is quite different of the original trilogy because. But it's an excellent game by its visual effects, its story, its excellent boss fight, its character, its multiplayer ...
Better than Gears of War 3 but less than Gears 1 and 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. great game though the frame rate seems iffy horde seems to run worse than anything else which does take the fun out of the mode and the servers need improvement my ping goes from 40 to 150 which is annoying basically the game needs a overall life improvement patch and it will be perfect Expand

Gears of war is back, which is great. Seriously the game deserves a 7 due to a not so engaging story compared to the previous Gears of Wars in which I felt invested with the characters, also some weird mechanics regarding enemies and encounters but nothing too annoying.

I'm giving it a 9 because of people giving this game a 0 which is plain stupid and childish, no wonder why "gamers"

The Coalition has managed to successfully bring every great elements from previous games into a new setting. Whether you go for single-player, multiplayer or horde mode, GoW4 hast plenty to offer. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is the best in the series thus far; and despite shortcomings in the story and development of characters, GoW4 is easily one of the best third-person shooters of this generation.

The Coalition’s development team did a fantastic job adopting the Gears of War series. They’ve preserved what makes it special in our hearts and added in new bells and whistles which are absolutely welcome.
