    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing Gears since the first one came out back in 2006 so I know what to pretty much expect of the game. I have nothing bad to say about the campaign, as always. Beautiful graphics, great storyline and above all the gameplay itself was smooth (Xbox One). Oh man, those graphics... I already said beautiful graphics but I have to repeat myself because that's how great they were. The facial animations, the weapons, even the voice acting was perfect. Music to my ears. I won't lie, I died, A LOT, but granted I played on insane as always, since I'm a bit insane myself. The game itself has a long campaign, which I love, took me about 31 hours. Who doesn't love a game with a long storyline? Spoiler alert, the ending was phenomenal. It's pretty much all of Gears in a nutshell. I was sitting like a moron in front of my screen with my jaw hanging to the floor. Just an amazing experience. Even though I have mostly positive things to say about GOW 5, of course it comes with its negatives. I can't say there's any game, at least for me that doesn't come with SOME downfalls. The biggest nuisance in this game for me was the crashing. The game froze up, a lot. I would have to resort to dropping a grenade on myself so I can pretty much die and restart from my last save in order to correct the issue. Let's talk multiplayer: Horde (YAY), versus mode or escape. Horde is even more badass then it's ever been. Since each player brings something different to the table, it just makes wave after wave more enjoyable and more intense. I'm ashamed to say I only reached save 38. As a veteran of the game, how dare I! But just comes to show how much they amped up the difficulty. Loved it! Now, when it comes to the matchmaking, it's 50/50 here. I don't believe the system always made the best matchmaking setups, due to the fact it was rarely balanced, at least in my experience. Given that though, it's by far the best multiplayer they've achieved yet. Entering the Escape maps which seemed to be highly unpredictable was a rush and the new Arcade versus was just beautiful chaos. I was constantly experiencing tachycardia while playing Arcade in the most amazing way ever. Kept me constantly on my tippy toes. Piece of advice to my fellow female gamer, don't play this in heels like I did at one point. Yes, I was playing in heels, and yes I stood up often due to my adrenaline and YES, I did fall once, maybe twice? Okay... maybe more than twice. Long story short, if you're a Gears fan from the beginning or you're just starting out the series for the first time, you will 100% enjoy about every aspect of the game. Everything from the amazing graphics, great storyline and smooth gameplay to the multiplayer modes and even those annoying little campers that hide in one spot during matchmaking that makes you want to pull your hair out or in my case use words I didn't know existed or throw a controller or two against the wall (and maybe one of my heels too, maybe...)… Expand

    Gears 5 is meh 3rd person shooter. It's pretty fun for one play through but with no New Game Plus or any level up system carry over there no point playing again. Shows the 1 x technical prowess but at it's core is just a pretty bland shooter

    Whilst trying to innovate from previous games I personally couldn’t connect or feel any engagement to the campaign or characters, the multiplayer was okay but again couldn’t engage, I’m sure many people love the game it’s just not for me

    Full disclosure, I LOVE this series. I'm down for the Horde mode in a big bad way. This version of the game is UTTERLY FRUSTRATING. The game is buggy as all heck. I've crashed multiple times in the Story and Horde modes. I've been in an endless loop of crashes, so I had to go to a prior save point to replay what I already played. I've been in rooms where the mcguffin wouldn't activate,Full disclosure, I LOVE this series. I'm down for the Horde mode in a big bad way. This version of the game is UTTERLY FRUSTRATING. First time through on Horde mode, I got to wave 35 and the screen went blank and the game completely crashed. I would score this a 8-9 out of 10 if the servers were operational and the crashes were not happening. I will try this on PC, since I got the Game Pass.

    If it's better, I'll resubmit my review. As of the time of my review, there are 1220 positive reviews and 141 negative reviews.

    Gears 5 uses pretty much the usuall combat. It feels powerful impactful. The gameplay is much smoother, with much improved graphical fidelity. The story Is the most detailed and coherent story in the series. Deep, emotional.

    I finished the Gears 5 campaign last night. I had an absolute blast playing through this game. Very surprised as I am not a major Gears of War fan overall.

    I recently played through Gears 4 and enjoyed it along with Kait's story. So I was looking forward to Gears 5 to see how it played out. I was not disappointed. Graphics: Absolutely incredible looking game, and a pretty solid 60    I finished the Gears 5 campaign last night. I had an absolute blast playing through this game. Very surprised as I am not a major Gears of War fan overall.

    I recently played through Gears 4 and enjoyed it along with Kait's story. So I was looking forward to Gears 5 to see how it played out. I was not disappointed.

    Graphics: Absolutely incredible looking game, and a pretty solid 60 FPS Frame Buffer. Smooth game.

    Audio: Extremely well done, guns sound great, enemies, music composition and timing, all excellent.

    Story: Solid as even some of the top tier games this generation. I was engrossed in the story! I was literally in shock and awe near the end of the game. It was literally jaw dropping. God of War meets Contra meets a massive blockbuster action movie. I could not believe it. The game was also much more emotional than previous entries, with some choices and arcs that are truly deep, and, in some cases, tough choices to make. It was a very involved story that did not feel generic.

    Gameplay: Gameplay typical of Gears with some new, very well done mechanics such as Jack, your AI assistant. Some new weapons, the Lancer GL is bad ass. Overall, gameplay is very solid.

    This game is a must play to me, even if you are not a huge Gears fan. I took some points off for various things that all added up, such as some issues in game with graphics, clipping, mapping, some disconnects in co-op. I also think the COG's need their own flashlight instead of just relying on Jack, that was rather frustrating. They also need a photo mode! This game BEGS to have one! Also, the new open world design in certain areas was a fun addition, but I feel like it was sparse overall in terms of exploration. They give you side objectives, but there are no random encounters in the open world, which made traveling kind of dull after a while.

    Overall, I give this game a 9/10. I think The Coalition did an incredible job, and I cannot wait for the next entry in the series! This game is one of my top 5 games of the generation, alongside God of War, RDR2, Spiderman, and the Forza Horizon entries. Do yourself a favor and give Gears 5 a play!    … Expand

They replicated the battle pass model from fortnite only issue is, fortnite is a FREE game, the battle pass is only 10.00 dollars and you get a bunch of unlockables with it.     Kait ruins the entire game. She's a selfish POS who abandons everyone to go on a journey to find herself. She's literally just fighting for herself. Nothing is gained on this journey either, only lost. You lose one of 2 main characters at the end, and it feels really like it's just being set up. If you've never played the old gears games you'll probably choose to kill one character, if you've literally only played Gears 5 you're probably gonna choose to kill the other character since you rarely see him & built zero attachment to him the entire game.

    The open world is also bland & empty. Imagine playing in an open world in some weird vehicle that makes zero sense driving & stopping at an area that looks cool only to find one gun & a component piece for your robot. Now multiply this by 100. There is literally no reason to explore in this game. Nothing is gained, much like Kaits journey. It's all filler content meant to pad game time.

    The game shines when you are actually in a fight, shooting, dashing, chainsawing enemies but these moments are so spread out the game feels like half a game. It doesn't help much that you're forced to play as kait for nearly the entire campaign. She's a horrible character now, so focused on herself that she forgets about pretty much everyone around her & what they've done to help her. In gears 4, she had more personality, pazazz & was actually fairly likeable. Now she's just broody, emo, angry, hating the world & everything in it. She's just an SJW now, fighting for nothing & representing nothing but her own self interests.

    Gears of Wahmen, Gears of Woke, Gears of WTF ever you call it, it's a crappy campaign that makes you not want to play the game anymore.

    Bring back Marcus or his son JD as the main protagonist. Gears is supposed to be about Marcus & Gears 4 was supposedly passing on Marcus' legacy to his son, but whoever was put in charge of Gears 5 threw that out the window because they wanted diversity or whatever in their campaign. Diversity doesn't make the game's story better, good writing does. Whoever wrote this game's campaign obviously has something against Marcus & JD because this game changes their characters personality traits & the ending can basically ruin them both entirely depending on your choices.    … Expand

    How these shill critics give it 90 or 100 I will never know, and an average player rating of 8.7? These are blatant lies. The scores are being manipulated and here is your proof. I know lots of people through GOW4 and we were all generally excited about GOW5, playing it as soon as it was released. We are mostly Horde players so were interested in that but that's completely ruined. I don't even know what this extra nonsense they added is for and why it's only one character per skill set. Have they never heard of personalization or customization? What if a lady player wants that skill set with a female character or vice-versa?

    I don't like the Horde mode, which is what I was looking forward to most. Fine, so Horde is bad, how about the campaign? Reading the reviews from "professional critics" you would think this was some sort of novel experience or polished within an inch of its life. NOT EVEN CLOSE. This game sucks. I described it to my GOW4 mate as, "borderline homosexual". The dialogue is so tedious and childish. How any developer is allowed to make an 18 + game and write it for 12 year olds is beyond me. This title is aimed squarely at SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN and holds no interest for me as an adult

    I've never written a review for a video game before but I was so disappointed by GOW5 and indeed by the blatant shilling going on here, there and everywhere, that I felt the need to express myself

    If anyone paid the full special edition pre-order price on this game and maybe added a season pass or whatever other money grabs, wow, biggest rip off in video game history. I mean that. This game isn't worth $5 never mind $80 and is a downgrade from GOW4

    End result? All of the fanatic GOW4 players who I'm friendly with no longer play any Gears title. A bunch of people I know uninstalled the game to save disc space - that's how bad this game is. GOW4 was 100% the reason why I bought an XB1 and GOW5 was going to be my reason for investing in the XB1X. It is safe to say I won't be buying that console to play this trash game

    ** For those saying this game looks amazing, I have a bunch of free eye tests vouchers from Specsavers. It's an impressive achievement for the developers to take this AAAA ++++ title and turn it into something I can't stand looking at. I've been playing MGSV lately, which is like 4 years old and it can beat GOW5 with one hand tied behind its back.     Multiplayer on the other hands, I've always said the multiplayer is awful nothing changes at all. The type of gameplay is just a shotgun fest with no real skill, the different type of plays in the game i.e. mid-range and long-range combat seems to be completely ignored. The multiplayer is left very linear and unskilled in the action that you're forced to rinse and repeat i.e. hug round a blind sight and one shot someone who gets too close to you with the gnasher. The game will never really touch a high level remaining with this sort of gameplay.    … Expand

    Try with Game Pass before you buy, some things are much better (like the graphics and the new arcade mode) some things are worse and pretty bad (only campaign and versus mode for offline, besides you can't unlock anything offline).
    The in game store shouldn't exist in this full priced game $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Terrible. Filled with bugs and glitches on top of HORRIBLE, anti-consumer, predatory micro-transactions. How far Gears of War franchise has fallen, no wonder they changed the name to Gears 5, this isn't true Gears of War and it doesn't deserve that name, this is just another terrible product from Xbox Games Studios.

    Nearly a month after launch, Gears 5 is still very buggy, with characters getting stuck in scenery,    "Gears 5," not "Gears of War 5" is one of the most disappointingly mediocre games I've played in the last five years. It is so god awfully behind the curb of other franchises which are actually trying to spice things up, Gears 5 doesn't even try to innovate beyond making its name shorter.

    Nearly a month after launch, Gears 5 is still very buggy, with characters getting stuck in scenery, easily getting sucked behind unfinished invisible barriers, and triggers that don't activate. The new 'third player' slot, Jack, is responsible for most of this, with his triggers not appearing sometimes, and his "floating" movement being so poorly programmed that he gets stuck on level terrain in places. Mind you, this is a character that doesn't ever touch the floor. Not to mention cutscenes that don't even trigger if you're playing as Jack.

    The story is worse than Gears of War 3. There's no plot until over halfway through, and all the plot that's introduced about 4 hours into the game just works up the presumed protagonist for Gears 6. Gears 5 is so bad, however, I would think only Microsoft's cash injections could save the series from the scrap pile. In any case, the game introduces or reintroduces side characters, kills them off, tells you to be sad about it, and then they're never mentioned again. Rinse and repeat for nearly every chapter. Ultimately, it ends on the worst cliffhanger I have ever, ever seen.

    The multiplayer is standard Gears of War fair with introduced casual modes that take the original Gears of War flavor of 'getting destroyed by the host' and uses server pockets to make the ping variation between players less frustrating. Being another third person game, however, with barely any competitive scene, I have no idea why you'd chose to play this over Fortnite, which runs on the same engine and has effectively the same gameplay besides building and "rodeo running."    … Expand

    The best Gears game I have played. The visuals are stunning and the story is gripping. I cannot put the controller down (except to watch the amazing story cut scenes).

    Multiplayer is FIRE. The new modes really are a good variety to cater for ALL gears fans.

    Magnifique le nouveau Gears of War ! éblouissant et proposé d'office à 60 im/s et en 4K sur la X (ou aux trois quarts de la 4K même dans des conditions extrêmes selon Digital Foundry, l'autorité en la matière) autant dire qu'on en prend plein les mirettes !

    Pas vraiment un monde ouvert (loin de là même), le Gears 5 sort néanmoins de son couloir habituel pour offrir quelques balades dans    Magnifique le nouveau Gears of War ! éblouissant et proposé d'office à 60 im/s et en 4K sur la X (ou aux trois quarts de la 4K même dans des conditions extrêmes selon Digital Foundry, l'autorité en la matière) autant dire qu'on en prend plein les mirettes !

    Pas vraiment un monde ouvert (loin de là même), le Gears 5 sort néanmoins de son couloir habituel pour offrir quelques balades dans deux grands espaces et par la même occasion des missions secondaires très optionnelles mais assez bienvenues... on fait du ski, on surfe sur le sable, on éradique la vermine... on sauve le monde (encore une fois) : tout ça, ça reste du classique.

    L'histoire (?) tente de raconter quelque chose cette fois-ci mais se prend vite ses grosses bottes dans le tapis... car d'une part, c'est invraisemblable et d'autre part, c'est assez ridicule... Gears 5 tente également de mieux caractériser ses personnages mais le fait si maladroitement qu'on se croirait dans un feuilleton de la télé brésilienne. Quelle idée, franchement... dites-moi juste où passer les grands coups de karcher, où et quand nettoyer et j'y vais ! je m'en fous des états d'âme de l'équipe ou de leur 'parcours'...

    Qu'importe, si la jouabilité reste lourdaude, elle n'en est pas moins toujours très spectaculaire avec -c'est nouveau- les capacités du robot ménager à tout faire, Jack, qu'on peut améliorer au fur et à mesure. Et les nombreux réglages concernant la manette permettent d'ajuster au mieux la maniabilité générale.

    Mais bon, j'en suis aux deux tiers de la campagne et là, je suis bloqué... parce qu'un script ne s'est pas déclenché. J'ai dû "manuellement" si j'ose dire aller au lieu suivant en me fiant au dialogue, car aucun point de repère n'est apparu ; sur place, les choses semblent reprendre leurs cours normal -après avoir réchargé, car le jeu était coincé devant la porte- mais impossible de faire entrer le robot dans le bureau ou de pirater l'interface à pirater : l'action contextuelle n'apparaît pas...

    Donc, quand ça sera débuggué, le Gears nouveau devrait être agréable... mais pour l'instant, il faut attendre les patchs. Heureusement qu'il ne m'a coûté que quelques euros (à peine 3 par mois pendant 3 mois) via une promo du Game Pass parce que sinon, je lui aurais collé 1. Un bug pareil (plus un autre lors d'une mission secondaire) ce n'est pas acceptable.

    Epilogue : là, rebelote, je me retape le chapitre 3 en espérant ne pas rencontrer de nouveau le bug bloquant... j'aimerais quand même si c'était possible finir cette campagne... et paf ! ça re-merde mais à un autre endroit, juste après le retour à l'aéroport : l'avion ne décolle pas, le script est enrayé et me re-voilà sans objectif principal !

    ça commence à me gaver : malgré déjà quelques patchs, ils sont plus occupés à régler les microtransactions qu'à débugguer leur jeu... sorti trop tôt et tout cassé en fait. Je descends donc à 3 et je mets mon mouchoir dessus. Dans un an ou deux, le Gears 5 sera peut-être réparé...    … Expand

    Best Gears to date! Played them all and this one is top notch. My only complaint is needed more MP maps at launch. I know more will be coming but 7 to start, really. Anyway, great job to The Coalition!

    Having played all previous Gears, I can say that this is the best one. Everything feels and looks better. In the past I got a bit frustrated with the stiff movement and shooting when not in cover. However Gears 5 made huge improvement in this area and I think the game running at 60fps helps. I think this is the game to make me full in love with Gears again.

    Astonishing, I can't think of other words to describe this game. Probably the bast game of 2019!!!! I rally don't understand how some people can criticize this game and give it a 0 score: they probably haven't played it, it's the only reasonable explanation, because Gears 5 is almost uncriticizable.

    Horrible game.

    Bunch of glitches and bugs. Game couldn't save after hours of spending time with the Hord Mode. All progress lost. Characters are one dimensional and boring. Dialogs are cringe as hell sometimes. And barely bring the story forward.

    A decent game with serious networking problems. Co-op is virtually unplayable with no end in sight, devs have been working on it for two days now with no improvement, cannot play as a team for more than 5-10 minutes without someone being disconnected. Unacceptable.

    Was playing fine,spent 3-4 hours 3 person coop horde mode all the way to 50 (intermediate) got the achievement but got an error code basically game cheated me out of my match exp , if I could with the bugs that they should have corrected after the beta but instead shadowbanned users on reddit posting credible feedback , this game deserves a negative score as of this moment

Act 3 was in a desert and it was **** story is awful i was close to end my playthrough here because the game was so bad. Bad Leveldesign... lazy leveldesign it just wasnt fun and that my first gears i didnt want to finish.. but i said to myself ok the last act will be good how can you **** up the last chapter right ? God wrong it was **** there was no climax there was only one awful final boss battle against some gian generic worm nobody cares about. All other things are just copy/past from other gears oh look her mother is alive and is the new queen wow great storytelling... overall one of the worse games i played this year. the gaming press must be on drugs giving this ****show over 4/10.

    Dont even care about gears 6 now. this as a long time gears fan that still liked gears 4.

    The is also buggy and is clearly unfinished i entcountered a save bug where the game just stop working and i found many glitches. Sony or Nintendo would never release a first party game in this state. its a disaster.    … Expand

    Looks great, plays ok for most of the time has some annoying bugs like getting stuck and teleport and some of the physics make no sense. The "open world" traversal seems pointless and even though it looks great gets boring quickly. Micro transactions and day one dlc is jokes

    The multiplayer is forced crossplay meaning if your on xbox and are vs ppl on PC, you're screwed. Also plagued with people hacking on PC and the game is riddled with broken achievements.

    TC can only try to take advantage of fans for so long before they bail. Gears 5 was rushed to release and full of bugs and cash grab tactics. Not only are the devs delusional about the game being broken, they pump out base content like curb stomps and expect to charge real $$ for them. TC has destroyed Gears, only hope is Gow2 UE. Gears 5 is a disgrace to the Gears of War legacy.

    Bom esse jogo tem uma história que poderia ser promissora mas e muito confusa em alguns aspectos,outro quesito é a jogabilidade, e a mesma dos outros gears o que eu acho muiito enjoativo, e o jogo tem alguns bugs que podem ser corrigidos em atualizações futuras.Bom não recomendaria ninguém comprar esse game, mas pega ele no game pass pra você ter sua própria opinião.

    Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

If you have intentionally avoided games from this series, the fifth sequel probably won´t change your mind, but if you are looking for a quality action game and you are still a fan of multiplayer, try it.     Gears 5 proposes a breathtaking solo campaign and a generous array of multiplayer modes. Even if the recipe remains classic, we really want to go through with it. The characters are rather well written, the environments are often spectacular, and Jack the robot adds some salt to the gameplay. A visual feast and glorious action game that perfectly demonstrate Xbox One X's true power.
