Similar to 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order, Doom is a mostly successful old and new school fps design. Unlike their recent Wolfenstein reboot, Doom is absolutely bursting with content. Massive sprawling campaign levels, a fully fleshed out multiplayer map, and the single most powerful in game map making tool ever conceived.

Assuming you aren't overly cynical, you should enjoy the hell

Marty was put in charge of Doom after Bethesda scrapped the original plans. His job was to make a doom that goes back to the roots and feels like the classic games.

Not really an easy task, considering doom is one of the most hyped franchises of all time, and a lot of the fans have incredibly high expectations, some at such levels it almost becomes unhealthy. And when the hype is built into such astronomical dimensions, you might fail to see the game for what it is, leaving you to miss out on the 95% good, and focus on the 5% that is bad or less good.

But even considering what a daunting task it must have been for id to finally resurrect this dearly loved franchise, and even secure the future for themselves as a independent company. I have one simple thing to say.

    Oh boy have they succeeded.

As a fan of the original face paced, run and gun shooters, I was very skeptical about this new Doom iteration. After Doom 3 left me feeling "meh", I had reservations, but after the open beta I was convinced to at least give it a try. I'm so glad I did. There's nothing I love more than ripping off a possessed's leg and shoving it down their throat for the kill.

For those reviews that say "There's no story etc" I say this: Read. The. Codexes. Especially for the enemies, they fill in so much back story as to why the demons and possessed do what they do. I know it's a foreign concept "reading in a FPS? nah brah" but trust me, it's worth it and can even give you a strategic advantage sometimes.

I hope ID plans on making more shooters in this style because this was definitely a breath of fresh air. We'll done Bethesda and ID. We'll. Done.

A fantastic update of the original games. Only about half way through the campaign, 8-9 hours, and I am still being entertained. It's such a joy to see how little care Doomguy has in regards to the story elements, smashing his way through priceless technology and demons alike.

A game that delivers to it's target audience. So let me define the target audience. You enjoyed games like Quake IV, Doom 3, Bullet Storm, Serious Sam, Pain Killer, Riddick , Wolfenstein Old Blood, and Prey. The Halo 4 crowd may think the game is too fast and the COD fans should not apply.

The Xbox One and PS4 are limited in choices for people who like the games I mentioned above.

Really the Old Blood on X1 was the 1st time I felt like I was kicking it old school. Otherwise I lean on my Xbox 360 to give me more of this kind of feel for shooters.

The game isn't perfect, I'd agree co-op would have made it more flexible at $60, but if you are waiting it out $45 will be here soon enough.

So many games are cover shooters that have you hide behind a rock for 15 minutes at a time. DOOM has you running into battle headfirst. Cover fire means certain death. Keep moving, quick and efficiently. I love it. It's a great change of pace. -1 point since story is a bit light so far, but still early in the game.

    - Not as good as the “Timesplitters: Future Perfect” mapmaker.
+ You can play maps created by other people
+ You can ALSO share your OWN maps!

    Multiplayer
+ Actually really fun, balanced. (So Far)
+ Taunts are super funny (well…most)
+ Being a demon is AWESOME!
    - There is barely or ANY background music during games, making hard for me to play multiple matches at a time.
+ You can customise you loadouts, hack modules (perks), and how your character looks in game.

    TDM
-+ Your Average Team Death Match, get to 75 kills
You can also use the DEMON RUNE.

    Soul Harvest
Like “Kill Confirmand” in Call Of Duty.
Get points by killing an enemy and take their “soul”
Deny the enemy getting points by collecting your dead teammates “Soul”
When you are a demon the people you kill drop two “souls”
Pretty fun, and there is a lot more “Demon Rune” spawning in (Although it is limited to only one person having it at once)

    Domination
Capture and defend three positions. First team to 250 points wins. (or the most points when the time limit is reached.)
Demon Rune seems to spawn a little less than the others.
Its actually really fast pace compared to Call Of Duty and Battlefield.

    Warpath
Like “king of the hill” or “Hardpoint” in other games, but the objective moves around constantly
    You can points pretty fast
You capture and lose the objective fast.
First team to 250 points wins

    Clan Arena
Kill the other team, only one life (don’t waste it)
    Fast paced, fun.
    No demon rune I believe

    Freeze Tag
Like tdm, only one life, instead of dying you “freeze” and your teammates can “Thaw” you out and you respawn and fight again!
Actually a lot of fun, and you look funny while you are frozen.
No demon rune that I am aware of.
    Might be my favourite
Story (I was playing on “Ultra-Violence) Lots of stuff to do, many ways to play, although you pretty much ALWAYS have to keep moving. Glory kills are awesome, although they get less and less cooler the more times you do it. Story is actually pretty interesting. Graphics are pretty nice. It is pleasant to look at this game. The gameplay is smooth and FAST! Music is **** sexy. 2 of the bosses are AWESOME, although the FIRST one is my favourite. There are a lot of collectables (which might be sort of a nightmare for those 100%ers) Lots of secrets that are actually WELL hidden, I actually did not find that many of them. Enemies are actually pretty smart and attack you like **** (Occasionally they’ll be dumb and do stupid **** like stand there and eat bullets) Maps are well designed, and actually make you think, instead of just following a set path, you have to traverse the land to move forwards (IE Jump here, duck here, get key cards, ) It can be sort of repetitive after a while. The final boss is kinda…not fun. It’s really cheap and almost no skill involved to kill it , a lot of luck in my opinion. Which sucks because the OTHER bosses are actually a LOT of fun! The ending, sets it up for the sequel. I rate this ….. 9/10

There is no hiding behind an obstruction and laying waste to your enemies in Doom. You do that, you die. The only plan that works is never stand still, and get in close for gory kills as often as possible. Once I embraced that style of play, the game became ridiculously fun.

I know this game got knocked by some for being short, but I played through on the hardest difficulty level, which I find always extends the play time because I died a lot. A lot. The game is no insult to the franchise and instead is a solid update with fun shooting and platforming sections within it, If you've never played a Doom game before this is a great game to start with, the levels are so atmospheric, the enemies a worth splitting open and overall it's gory ride from start to finish.

the only down point in the game.
I know what most of people say about this. that this game doesn't need a story and I tend to agree, because the gameplay, stunning audio and visuals makes up for everything else. BUT never the less for a AAA 2016 game it should have a more decent story and it is quit a shame and disappointment considering the potential of pretty interesting lore. they could also throw some bad-ass cut scenes, why so cheap ?

    E. Content Vs. Value - 8
this is not on open game so naturally it is not that long. but aside from the campaign there are classic and arcade maps that you can and will replay again and again thanks to the Awesome OST like already mentioned before. there are secrets and collectables to find, weapon upgrades and challanges to complete.
the campaign is good but fells a bit too short.

Great but takes a bit longer to get used find fitting preset.

    G. Stability and Performance - 10
Perfect! for the whole campaign there were no noticeable performance issues, no crashes, bugs or glitches or anything that ruined the game from a technical aspect. THIS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS GRANTED.
Lately new games are being released in an incomplete and unpolished state which results in many bugs. glitches. FPS drops. Hard Crashes and much more **** that ruins your experience and makes you think why did I even bother with this game. even after whole year some games still have a lot of issues and no one bothers to fix them because they are busy releasing a DLC which will probably have the same issues. why do people accept this kind of crap *face-palm* .

With the release of Doom VFR, we thought we’d look back at the last main entry of the series. How does one go about rebooting the granddaddy of the first person shooting genre? By taking what made the original, which still holds up well today no less, and cranking everything to the max. Everything from the catchy industrial soundtrack to the trademark gore has been improved.

You’ll begin the game already on Mars, having been connected to a strange machine that someone, or something, placed the player in. Our unnamed protagonist quickly arms himself and sets out on a journey of destruction through Mars and the very pits of Hell. Unlike Doom 3, the game puts the story on the backburner in favor of a simple premise that focuses more on fast paced action than slow exposition. There is plenty of story available, but it’s optional.

Much like the original, the game runs at breakneck speed. If you stop moving, particularly in a firefight, you will die quickly. Unlike most modern FPS games, you don’t have a regenerating health bar, so you will rely on seeking out health kits as well as using the new finishing moves that have been implemented in this iteration. After taking a set amount of damage, most enemies will begin flashing which is your signal to get in close for the kill. These are satisfying and needed to replenish small amounts of health.

You’ll find all of your original tools of destruction are present and accounted for. The biggest change to the arsenal is the addition of secondary firing modes, which are unlocked and upgraded by completing challenges in the campaign; some are a bit grindy, but worth the work. The only disappointment was that the chainsaw, which was a personal favorite, is now a pick up with a limited amount of fuel.

Much like the original, each level features a number of secret areas and short cuts, which rewards the player for exploration. You’ll find upgrades for your armor, weapons, as well as a small number of collectibles and the newly added runes. Finding a rune will unlock a short challenge, which if successful, unlocks an upgrade that can be used in the main campaign.

If you missed any collectibles or secrets, you are able to use the chapter select to head back with your newly acquired upgrades. The only low point of the campaign is the lackluster boss fights, which essentially set you loose in an arena against one of the game’s bigger enemies. These are more frustrating than fun, as the bosses are essentially large bullet sponges with a limited number of attacks, some of which are instant kills, leading to plenty of unfair deaths. Thankfully, there are only a few of these encounters.

In addition to the standard campaign, which clocks in around six to eight hours depending on your skill and selected difficulty, you have the option to play each completed level in the post release addition of the Arcade mode. This is similar to a score attack mode, limiting the player to certain weapons and removing any unlocked upgrades, leveling the playing field for those who wish to partake in the leaderboards.

On the multiplayer front, there are a number of options as well. While the PVP arena isn’t as populated as it was at launch, I was still able to connect to a game after a short wait. The multiplayer suite offers the standard game modes found in most FPS games. These modes are just as fast paced as the single player campaign, and in full lobbies can be fun despite the fact you will die and die often. Unlike most of the FPS counterparts, I found myself often laughing at my failures opposed to getting frustrated, which is a nice change.

I’ve spent the most time in the multiplayer arena playing with the new Snap Map feature, which allows players to create their own levels using a number of easy to use tools. They can then be uploaded for the community or friends to play. With hundreds of options available with varying levels of quality, there are a limitless number of replay options offered here. This feature also allows us the option to use old school visuals with the newly modeled enemies as well as to create a party with up to 3 friends for some co-op shenanigans.

While the game is lacking the survival horror element that was introduced in the last entry, it is a well-made shooter worthy of any gamer’s collection; especially those of us who are familiar with the original’s brand of ultra-violence.

Most upgrades and levels have small combat tasks that are typically brief enough to avoid excessive grinding.

On top of this there are bonus levels and challenges carefully hidden in the maps, perfectly balanced with the multiple difficulty modes. There's so much to do in DOOM, to the point where I haven't even tried the map creator or multiplayer mode yet, and I still feel like I got more than my money's worth.

The only complaint I really have is that the loading screens are a *little* long. Otherwise, this game is great.

One of the best shooters I've played. Feels exactly like the original Doom would have had it been made in 2016. Exhilarating, atmospheric, and sometimes downright unsettling, Doom 2016 is a masterpiece in FPS game design.

Great game, loved every second of it. It looks fantastic on my Xbox one x! Beautiful scenery and textures, great models and weapons. A lot of gore fun!

A **** crazy game that is an absolutely masterpiece that you must play, is DOOM at his best, really frenetic and difficult, with a lot of violence and gore and the glory kills that are gorgeous. Common and lets rip and tear some demons.

In the upcoming sequels (because let's face it, we know that they're already in development), please bring back a strong element of horror. I believe Guillermo Del Toro would be a fantastic asset for horror consultation. If you decide to go that route, I'd love to see the path this takes.

While we won't go anywhere near as far to say that this online facing side of the game is an afterthought, it doesn't carry with it the same sense of intense playtesting and meticulous detail as the solo campaign.

A tremendous return for an all-time great. Doom feels so fresh by being so old-school. [July 2016, p.75]
