Doom 2016 was a masterpiece, it brought me a lot of joy to play through the first time and again last month in preparation for Eternals release. I needed this game, things are tough for everyone right now and this was a little light along the way until I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. They managed to take the few things I didn’t like about Doom 2016 and ramp them up to the max. This mechanic of using a particular weapon to get a certain item type in a fight takes away about 3/4 of any strategy from a shooter. Melee attack? Nope, not anymore it just pushes them. Critical attack so you could just polish them off immediately? Nope they flash every time to give you the opportunity to get health so you get to pop them again. Oh and let’s lower the ammo counts so you HAVE to use these REVOLUTIONARY mechanics. And get ready to do some spinning!! Cuz our frenetic next generation game is gonna HABITUALLY spawn enemies behind you. The graphics are good, the music is AMAZING. You get to see Doom guys face, and thats...just...whatever. In 2016 I’d gather my ammo make my plan, try to gather what armor I could, then open up the gore nest and get to work. Now it’s just spin around go through each weapons paltry amount of ammo, chainsaw, ammo, rinse and repeat. And the whole world loves it. Guess it’s time for Grandpa to take a nap, this game makes me tired, sure wish I’d have bought 60 dollars worth of toilet paper instead of this. Expand

Most tedious, most boring game of the year. Main character is a wimo, who can carry a couple of rounds and thats it. Instead of shooting, we are looking for ammo. Or jump on platforms. How could u screw doom up so badly? I dont belive all this favorable reviews. B must have paid for it.

Gave it a second chance and its 10/10. I was wrong.

How to ruin a game. It is a real masterpiece but it has no ‘traditional’ multiplayer, which has no sense at all. Battlemode is cool but after 2 days it will bore you.

It is yet another unfinished game: a real shame.

I hate this game. I feel like this game is fanboyed a lot because of Doom 2016 was such a great game. Doom 2016 was good in fact I'd say best game on the new systems but this game is trash (not because I'm not good or died just now (fanboy kids excuse to defend games that are trash) but because I have made it almost to the end of the game and I paid $90 for this trash and ofc can't returnI hate this game. We seem to be riding this trend of making these games hard as possible for esport players = good in the past 4 years. Why make it so hard? put more difficulties for those no life esport lovers but make it the same as doom 2016 difficulty for the normal difficulty. It was perfect the way it was (Why change what is not broken). Making games to hard for ppl makes ppl not buy the next one because it limits ppl that have jobs and don't have time to put into these games. I won't be buying the next game and I'm about done buying games all together if this trend don't end. Dif not buying new systems either. If you esport tryhards wants a game they need to make their own ******* games and systems. Games are not careers for the majority of gamers. If you want games that is for ppl with careers than make your own ******* systems to play on. Sorry for the rant I'm just so tired of games being made for these no lifes. Casual gamers can't even get a single player game anymore because it's got to be so balanced and difficult for these COD, Fortnight, and League of legend multiplayer fanboys to have fun playing a dif game for once. One last thing I want to mention is jumping. Why is there so much jumping in this game like it's a platformer. This is Doom I want to shoot and run and that's it. If I wanted to play mario or halo I would buy those games. This is why games as a whole has lost so much from it's fanbase and most ppl has stopped playing games. Stop catering to these loser YouTubers and Esporters and make games for your fans. Your wasting money paying them to play it and say good things about it because ppl are figuring it out. That don't care what these youtubers or esports losers thinks about your games that are trash! Expand

    - Melee does no damage, unless enemies are staggered
    - Forced to use chainsaw constantly
    - Super annoying platforming, instead ditching it (already bad in 2016) they put it on steroids
    - More linear maps than 2016
    - Ugly menus and HUD. No matter how much you change colors. Disabling it gimps your gameplay
    - Worst of all, the hideous red LOW AMMO bar, blocking your view (you'll see lot of that)
    - The font used everywhere makes Comic Sans look good
    - Literally, the UI designer must be blind or retarded or both
    - Confusing, nonsensical story nobody cares about.. constant cutscenes break the action
    - Doom guy isn't as brutal anymore, he calmly listens to the idiotic speeches the NPCs give
    - No pickup animation for guns, instead collect ugly floating neon icons -> teleport to tutorial
    - You're forced to use all guns, by being out of ammo constantly --> time for chainsaw
    - Ugly garish rainbow colored pickups pouring out of enemies
    - Guns are ugly 90's style floating pickups now, instead of grounded look of 2016
    - Graphics not really that impressive, art style is cartoony compared to 2016. Technically maybe better graphics, artistically NOT better
    - Music is good, but not as good as 2016, Mick Gordon going through motions, nearly all of the riffs suck compared to 2016

Avoid and save 60€. The biggest letdown of 2020 so far, probably will remain the biggest.

Story is weak, but its not what doom fans are here for. We want gore, rage, darkness, fury and pure adrenaline. I am delighted to say that you do get all of that ........ but ....... in bursts......

Unfortunately this addition to the series introduces platforming, scaling of walls and portals which do nothing but slow down all the things that make the game enjoyable.
By the end of the game you are sick to death of stumbling across yet another jumpy puzzle that feels desperately out of place in this iconic all action series.

It agonises me to agree with the wife (when it comes to computer games - good save) but i just feel it could have been a bit darker too. Its more of a nit picky criticism but this sequel felt more cartoony than previous versions.

All in all a good game but you cant help but feel it could have been so much better without the unnecessary platforming just comes across as a bad call that the developers persisted with.

Dont believe the hype from some reviewers giving this a 10/10 and branding it the best shooter of our generation, along with many other nonsense statements. Its not.
This is a good shooter that leaves a bad taste in your mouth because it could have been much better. Its a must play/buy. But a 7/10

At least Doom '16 had the grace to know it was just run around shoot things, rinse and repeat, but this one seems to have added in so much cack. I know the proper original Doom had puzzle elements to it (finding the keys etc) but this just felt so confusing about where to go half the time.
I would like to say, I love dumb games, I wanted this to be fun and just run & kill everything, but I truly hated it.

This is a very arena based game and is doom in name, weapons and enemies only, the mechanics of the game feel like an evolved parkour mobile game hiding itself in overly sized levels, difficulty spikes and repetitive novelty mechanics that make it feel more like a chore than the action adventure run and gun game doom is known for. New mechanics can be welcomed in game evolution but not if it's an unbalanced addition that feels more like a chore that keeps saying "did you see that, wasn't that clever". The mechanics of getting health and ammo is laborious at best, as you constantly have to keep using an obnoxious and jarring chainsaw mechanism to get both health and ammo, not to mention the constant "running" which is a quick shuffle at best as every enemy seems faster than you and the "dash" is almost useless outside of the platforming elements. The other mechanic that "doomed" this game is the jumping from point to point and grabbing on walls to jump to other points.
in the end this game would be a 6/10 if it were sold as a different game, but as a doom game it is a 4/10 because of it's failure to match it's legacy.

It's pointless to address sound, story or graphics because the gameplay already doomed it.

Everything DOOM 2016 achived was thrown away into the garbage; the world building, characters, story and somehow even gameplay.

The gameplay in 2016 was one of the best in any FPS, it felt fluid and amazing. DOOM Eternal has, what it feels like, a fixed and static gameplay system that you can't control. Example: You are forced to use certain weapons on enemies too kill them; which ruins the famous term "Shoot at it until it dies"

It's no longer "shoot at it until it dies" as you get punished for it. Biggest example (of many) are boss fights. Every boss (except the final one) is no longer dynamic like in 2016. Every boss has a fixed pattern and you have to do certain things before you can attack the boss for a *limited time*.

DOOM Hunter - Destroy the shield.
Marauder - Wait for the eyes to flash green.
Gladiator - wait for the magic shield to go down.
Khan Maykr - Forced to use the meat hook and fist before you can attack her for a limited time.

The world building is by far a big let down of any game I've played. In 2016 you slowly move through Mars getting closer and closer to your destination as seen from the world, Example:
On the first level you could see the argent tower from the very beginning and after each level you the tower gets closer and closer, and when you're finally there you get to climb up the whole tower.
DOOM Eternal has none of that simply because you don't get to stay in one place at all.

The absolute biggest issue with this games world building and immersion is teleportation.
First you're on Earth, then in a different dimension, then in hell then back to earth and now you're somehow in heaven. This completly ruined the DOOM universe to me.
2016 had Mars and Hell. Eternal has countless dimensions that have no place in DOOM whatsoever.

And now the biggest let down for me and the biggest middle finger to 2016 is the destruction of Mars. Everything the DOOM 2016 has built up with the UAC, gone, in mere seconds, simply because of a cutscene that tried to blind the player with "WOW, a cOoL bIg lAsSer" while destroying the home place of the DOOM franchise for god knows whatever reason.
But seeing how Eternal has chosen Fantasy over Sci-fi, I wouldn't be suprised if Mars was magically brought back.

But what makes me hate Eternal the most, is the aracady direction ID went with this game.

    HUD/UI:
The HUD looks like something you would see in a mobile game. I have no doubt that this HUD was inspired by Apex legends. EXACT same geomeotry and use of bright colors. The thing with Apex is that the bright colors are very needed for fast navigation with the ammo managment. ETERNAL DOESN'T NEED THAT. Hugo or Marty mentioned that the bright colors purpose is to distinguish the ammo, which makes absolutly zero sense as it was never needed at all.

    Floating props:
This is something that completely annihilated the immersion this game had to offer.Floating Weapons. Floating book pages. 2 Meter long question marks. (+Fcking confetti when you walk through it).
I feel sorry and bad for the people who made the concept arts and desing for the levels.
Imagine making something so big and eerie just so there can be a big floating question mark in the middle of nowhere.

    Oversaturation of levels:
DOOM 2016 had three color choices for levels to stick with: Red, Dark Green and "cool" colors.
DOOM Eternal uses the entire color spectrum for each level. No level is easy on the eyes when it comes to the colors.

    Ridiculous skins:
This come back to where I said "a joke that doesn't take itself serious".
If you told me 4 years ago that the next game DOOM game would have the slayer wearing a greasy t-shirt with a "extra thicc" text on it I would have called you crazy
I want you guys to look at 4 examples I gave you and imagine 2016 with all of that. It's simply impossible.

Last thing I wanna talk about is the story.
DOOM 2016 had a very simplistic story. You wake up and start killing and destroying. This is all DOOM should be. 2016 also had a cliff hanger that was for nothing as Eternal doesn't start where 2016 stopped.

Hayden isn't a smart human that died of cancer and got reincarnated as a robot. Hayden is god of all of recreation.

VEGA isn't a super computer that was created and tested by UAC employees (That needs absolute zero cooling btw). Vega is a god in a USB stick.

I've to stop here as I've reached the limit.
DOOM Eternal has **** up the entire franchise. I see no future of DOOM whatsoever. The next DOOM should just be a mario styled arcade shooter. Just dimensions you jump from level to level killing demons in a arena with no story or a goal.

In DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. Here they have simplified it for some reason. Even after looking at the selection of a new weapon, before you took it by actually lifting it from the body or picking it up from the floor. This gave realism, immersion. And now some ridiculous weighing icons in the air. This kills the whole atmosphere of the dive. AndIn DOOM 2016, the story felt much better and the game felt more serious. This gave realism, immersion. And now some ridiculous weighing icons in the air. This kills the whole atmosphere of the dive. And there are a lot of little things like that. DOOM 2016 was head and shoulders above DOOM ETERNAL. All the good stuff was just flushed down the toilet. Yes, it's good. Killing demons is fun and the new mechanics are good. But the presentation of the story and simplification kill the whole atmosphere. Expand

Pickups are either super-bright, colored like candy or bob up and down while violently flashing. It might not sound severe but it is really irritating. Like... the chainsaw you rip out of a guys body in Doom 2016, or the rifle you tear from a dead soldies arms. In Doom 2020 they just hover on the ground in the dedicated weapon room at some point in the level, flashing wildly.

This diconnect carries over into the sound design and animations. For one it's really strong and snappy but now and then you have this comical sounds - like when some headshots or ripping out a cacodemons eye will make an audible 'pop' sound that could come straight out of a kids tv show. It might sound super-petty but imagine listening to a metal opera and every now and then the lead goes 'hyuck-hyuck' like Goofy.

Gameplay wise it's good with even more emphasis on movement and a lot more enemies to fight and manage. The pistole is now gone which ... i can understand, but the replacement is that you now always have 1 fuel for the chainsaw with which to kill lesser enemies. The resulting candy explosion is your main way of regenerating ammo. And that's something that does not work for me. When i fight a big demon it's just tideous to turn around and look for one of the endlessly spawning minor zombies so i can get some ammo back. By now every now and then when it happens i roll my eyes with a sigh.

Doomguy itself started bulking and went from just an angry guy who had enough of this **** to stereotypic antihero with a heart of gold, that constantly gets told by everyone how awesome they are. They really go out of the way with pampering the player. Not my favorite design choice.

All that said, it's still a good shooter. It's still an id shooter and they managed to get some fun new gameplay mechanics that act as modifiers on the existing combat. If everything of my complaints sounded like minor issues, you might want to give it a try.

Since there's already a litany of praise, I want to take some time to focus on the flaws with this sequel.

    1) There's a very clear 'right way' to play this game. Unlike Doom 2016, the developers all but force you to play Doom Eternal their way to have fun. If you don't routinely and proactively use the Chainsaw to get ammo, you'll consistently run of ammo leading to frustration. If you don't use the flame belch feature for armor routinely, you'll die quickly to heavy and super heavy enemies. If you don't exploit and memorize enemy weak point with certain weapons, enemies feel very bullet spongy and your guns feel weak. After you've mastered the 'dev approved way' to play the game, it's really fun, but it is a frustrating, miserable chore up until that point. This makes me caution casual shooter fans against purchasing this title.

    2) There's a ton of tutorials. After watching several developer commentaries on Doom 2016, I thought the devs understood how important it was to maintain a consistent, engaging pace and gameplay not bogged down by tutorials especially in the beginning. Apparently, I was wrong. By default, Doom Eternal provides you with a tutorial with your first encounter with every new gun, enemy, and ability. This leads to a pace consistently brought to a halt by menus. Since the devs have created a 'right way' to play this game, you need these tutorials to enjoy the game, but it really harms the feeling and pace when a new super demon burst onto the scene for the first time, and you're greeted with a mandatory tutorial telling you exactly how to defeat said enemy. Can't help but think of how other titles like Dead Space use a weak point focused combat without relying on tutorials.

    3) The narrative is again hidden behind codex entries. If you're interested in who the heck are the Sentiels or King Novik or the downfall of earth or the Makyrs, it's all in the codex in the menus

    4) The multiplayer, Battlemode, is a disaster. With assymmetrical multiplayer shooters, the main challenge is balancing the different classes for the devs. In this respect, Doom Eternal's multiplayer may be one of the most poorly balanced assymetrical multiplayer games I've ever experienced...certainly from a AAA studio. There a 2 demons vs 1 slayer which already provides a numerical advantage. The demons can spawn other demons consistently furthering this advantage. The demons have no ammo limitations just timers for abilities. The demons often have mobility advantages/can fly. To win, the slayer must not only kill both demons, but also do so within 20 SECONDS of each other...or the 2nd player controlled demon respawns with half health. Due to these truly awful design decisions from the multiplayer lead devs, the difficulty between playing as a slayer and demon is not even close. The lead designer on the multiplayer is borderline incompetent. Do not waste any of your time on this mode.

A lot of positives, a lot of negatives.

While it has great visuals and fluid frame rates, this is a departure from 2016 DOOM. First and foremost there is more platforming in this than I can ever remember in any installment of Doom. It is not enjoyable either. More tedious than anything else. Then there is the utter nullification of melee in the game which is an absolute turn off.

Then there is the utter nullification of melee in the game which is an absolute turn off. I get that its a shooter but it is taking a tried and true tool out of your tool box without good reason to do so.

On the upside, between that and the excessive platforming it does make it a little bit more like the whole run and gun doom of old.

The visuals are also astoundingly good, as is the sound.

Writing, not so much. But seriously who is playing Doom for the story?

The level design is probably about the weakest element and that again centers around the focus on platforming instead of working out better laid out and interesting combat areas to work through.

I personally feel it is inferior to 2016 DOOM, but Doom eternal does do a lot well and it definitely will have a receptive audience for it. For my 2cp its only a bout a 5, but that is not by any means a failing grade for it. Its a solid, middle of the road game. It will appeal to its most die hard fans and non diehard fans can get into it. Its well made, just lacking the something intangible. Sort of like trying to scratch a dark souls itch with a game like The Surge. Its just not going to cut it.

While still a good game, unless you HAVE to have it now, its definitely one worth waiting till Black Friday to see it drop down to about 30-35$ imho.

one thing is clear too.. this game basically has ripped a TON from prince of persia if you have ever played anything of that series.. environment, platforms, etc.. some of it could be straight out of those games.. sometimes to such an extent it almost seems copy/paste.. like a game like the two thrones..

Multiplayer: 0/10.. total trash.. something obviously made in some corporate echo chamber to be "innovative".. not even worth the time.. doesnt even feel like multiplayer.. most of the time youre just fighting against random AI.. they said they wanted to make sure it still felt "like doom" but really it still just feels "like single player".. there is zero sense of failure or accomplishment on a person to person basis when you win or lose.. its almost random.. its basically their "invasion mode" but in a small arena.. most of what youre fighting is just single player AI

Its a good game but doom 2016 was better in every way.. and here youre missing a ton of features, snapmap, real multiplayer, everything totally gone

And because of this you will get trapped between a demon and a hard place or another demon and die helplessly for more than you would like. And if you think that was where the problems ended you are so very wrong. ALL DEMONS RUSH YOU AND WILL VERY RARELY MISS THEIR SHOTS, so you will never have full health and always be on the run, never having time to strategize or just waiting to die so you can try and make a perfect run in order to pass one part of a level. In fact because of this doing glory kills which made doom 2016 so great is as pointless and detrimental as they are in duke nukem because not only do you lose all the health you gained but you will die immediately after the fact because of the body blocking and high accuracy the demons have at their disposal now. The rocket launcher is back for some reason despite being the worst gun in DOOM 2016 aside from the pistol and does self-damage for some reason again, which screws you over a lot considering the body blocking demons. Also, there is a weak point system in the game that was executed terribly. You would think the developers of this game would take pointers from something like the dead space franchise since the developers for that title perfected limb cutting mechanics. BUT YOU WOULD BE WRONG, only the HEAVY CANNON WITH THE SCOPE ATTACHEMENT RELIABLY CRIPPLES DEMONS, unlike dead space where every gun offered a tactical advantage. Which btw if you do not cripple demons you will die easily and immediately because they will overwhelm you with their multiple guns CONSTANTLY firing on you with no reload animations to give you a breather, let alone their larger hitboxes from said multiple guns makes it easier for them to body block you. This new weak point system makes all other guns (aside from the heavy cannon) pointless and useless except for when you run out of ammo for your heavy cannon, forcing you to have to play a specific way despite the developers praising themselves for their "diversity of combat" in DOOM eternal. Also you have to move slow and stand still most of the time to pick enemies apart with the heavy cannon which will kill you super quick because as I mentioned before YOU HAVE TO KEEP MOVING CAUSE YOU HAVE NO HEALTH AND DEMONS CONSTATLY BODY BLOCK YOU IF YOU DO NOT. There are loads of puzzles which get frustrating and old super-fast because unlike Metroid the only way to backtrack in doom IS TO RESTART THE WHOLE MISSION. Which would not be so bad if it was only collectables you lose from these puzzles on no, these bright individuals decided in a doom game that what players really wanted was too play cranium puzzles in order to get essential upgrades you need for your weapons and armor so you do not die easily and more pathetically then you already do. Which would not be so bad if there was not a useless interactive environment system that did not add insult onto injury. It tries to encourage you to kill enemies with it, but it kills you more instead. This system lacks any proper mechanics like in the game Bullstorm unless you get upgrades later to make it mediocre at best. Oh, and best part is there is a “lives” system like for arcade games, I guess the developers somewhat realized how terrible their design choices for combat where, so they implemented a token system to balance it out (which btw is not a bad idea for ultra-nightmare or arcade mode even if combat mechanics where not terrible). So, if you were looking for immersion in this game you will not find it. I have not even finished the campaign yet because of how unfun and frustrating it is, I tried to play multiplayer but that was even more of a train wreck. “BATTLEMODE” as they call it is just team deathmatch despite the developers claiming it is not. Their adorable little twist is that it is a 1 vs 2 team deathmatch where a human character with unique powers fights two player-controlled monsters with unique powers who can summon minions and debuff you, this goes on for three or so rounds and you unlock new powers for each round after the first. This is clearly a totally original system and never has anything similar or exactly the same ever been done before in any other game such as: dying light, evolve, left 4 dead 1/2, aliens vs predator (the 2010 game), battle born, overwatch, every single moba every, and more. This multiplayer idea is not only completely unoriginal, but it is incredibly unbalanced to the point where the only people who will get enjoyment out of it are masochists playing as the human and sadists playing as the demons. Then again if this was no accident considering bdsm is viewed by certain people of faith to be evil/satanic than this is an incredible design that is very lore friendly. Expand

Doom Eternal features 2 modes, an online competitive mode where a demon slayer is heavily unfairly matched with infinitely spawning player controlled demons that just isn’t really fun unless you’re on the demon side, so imam just throw that mode away and focus on the reason everyone is buying doom eternal.. its hefty 17 hour long demon filled campaign, and this campaign is really great… here you play as a demon slayer, taking on zombies and demons on earth as well as mars, going through a fairly linear campaign, but one filled with traversal and platforming, which is a very welcomed change.. however I feel this new addition takes a back seat to the straight up demon slaying, which on paper sounds fine, but ultimately it leads to an incohesive feeling world that feels like a bunch of random video game elements stapled together.. and this is Doom Eternals biggest issue…. Nothing feels purposeful, it feels mindless and repetitive from start to finish, none of the levels are memorable, the combat is constant, never giving you a chance to breathe or explore, it’s a headache… playing through doom eternal is an enjoyable headache.. but still a headache…
combat that time around is much more enjoyable though. Enemies having their weaknesses, making almost every battle feel like a puzzle despite feeling mindless at the same time, rarely leading to frustrating encounters.. but don’t get me wrong.. those encounters do exist.. though rare.. theres one over powered enemy specifically that kills all and any fun youll be having with this game in an instant… more specifically in one area of the game where youre trapped with him and a snake enemy, and no ammo or health really around… which brings me to another gripe I have with doom eternal, its health and ammo situation… ammo health and armor really feel nonexistent in doom eternals world, instead the game relies on you using your abilities to obtain armour and health, you can catch enemies on fire and freeze them, you have chainsaw enemies for ammo… but I just feel like id much rather have ammo drops after killing enemies than forced to find a small one I can chainsaw..wait for that chainsaw to refuel and do it again… the chainsaw system in general is a nonsensical mess… you can store up to 3 chainsaw attacks, however there is no enemy you can kill with 2 fuels… so whats the point… theres 1 and theres 3… and then you have enemies later on that cant be attacked with the chainsaw at all because theyre too big… these enemies should be reserved for 3.. and the middle large enemies killed with 2.. it just leads to fuel hording, and the payoff is never worth it.. but that can be said for this games weapons as well, youre given amazing weapons towards the end of the game, but rarely any fuel to use them, which begs me to ask.. why even give them to me in the first place.. especially the sword… this item didn’t come into play and was basically unusable until the final boss… but if this was that weapons only purpose, I suppose that’s okay… but I feel if that is the case you should’ve just waited longer to give it to me… All in all I do feel Doom Eternal is a great game, its fun zombie slaying to heavy metal, theres a crazy amount of weapons, and different ways to upgrade these weapons, customize them to your gameplay… but just don’t believe the hype… go into doom eternal expecting a great game and not an amazing game or a masterpiece and you surely wont be disappointed…
But if you go in expecting game of the year, youre going to get smacked with level design and gameplay that feels plucked out of the old god of war games with guns stapled to it
    I give Doom Eternal
    an 8/10

Putain.

It took quite a while to get into this game, mostly because the easiest difficulty is still ridiculous. I really do wish that game developers would understand that some people don't like to get frustrated by dying over and over. In some circumstances it does provide “Sentinel Armor” if you die in specific places, but THAT should have been your easy mode.

You play as a mute (mostly) super duper soldier that steam rolls over anything in his path. For some reason he has to save earth (even though the place is trashed worse than New Orleans the day after Mardi Gras). There is a group of alien/robot priests trying to cramp his style so he's got to straighten them out first. More story than I expected, but it's still basically going from arena to arena surviving demon hordes.

I kept putting this game down in the early levels, only to pick it up again weeks later. Then I'd come across two Mancubus' and feel like I was shooting harsh words for all the damage I was doing. Eventually, you get a few better weapons (Super Shotgun is pretty neat.) At that point it finally becomes a bit more bearable. The infinite frag grenade and ice grenade deserve a mention, as the upgrades really made those helpful tools.

There are a few issues that I had with the guns that I realize are more mechanics than flaws. Like weapons sharing ammo. Usually one weapon outshines the other, which results in sticking to the three or four weapons that actually do any damage. Also, it really took away from the crazy super weapons toward the end of the game that they were such limited use with rare ammo. I wound up not using them at all because I was always saving them for what might be around the corner.

As far as graphics and sound the game deserves a lot of the praise it gets. The sound track was great and the look and sounds of all the guns makes them feel powerful (even when they are not). There were many times that I had to stop and appreciate the landscape or a giant demon walking through the background. Those parts were outstanding.

I get that the game is supposed to be like “combat chess” and that is a really neat idea- that every enemy has a weakness that can be exploited but the come at you so fast that you have to keep moving and think very quickly. It just seems like (on easy mode, at least) exploiting a weakness shouldn't still take an entire weapons ammo stock to kill the demon that can destroy you in three hits. There are a lot of enemy types that tip the scale from challenging to frustrating very quickly.

Lastly, the platforming. It's not that it doesn't belong in this type of game (it doesn't) but that it is clearly designed to be frustrating and slow you down in an otherwise very fast paced game. It really seems like a failed experiment and you will be cursing whoever thought of it.

Once you get the hang of the game it does make you feel very skilled and the levels do become pretty cool as they progress. It's a bit light on story, but the only thing really holding it back from being a great game was the frustrating difficulty.

My flaw with the game remains similar to the last, with the lack of variety (pew-pewing) but this time, the platforming is way better, with the ability to instantly try again, and climbing is way more intuitive, and actually, everything is just way more intuitive.

Exploration still feels like a little bit of a drag, as there aren't any puzzles or anything cool to explore in the first place, but I will say, the upgrade system is way better along with the tone of the game being better than the last.

Overall, the game is great, I highly recommend it and I'd rather play this game than the first one, any day of the week.

    Prodeus is better.

The “movement shooter” aspects of this game should never be recreated. This feels more like a dance simulator than a FPS.

I'm not a competitive player. I like to sit down with a game to unwind after a long, busy, and stressful day at work. Doom Eternal is challenging, but more than anything else it's FUN. I catch myself smiling while I'm playing.

A good game, a somewhat disappointing sequel. Mechanics and controls hold up very well, shooting is precise and fast paced and the action is on point. The jumping around from planet to planet is a bit odd for a Doom title, plus the platforming really sours the game. Overall I enjoyed my time with this game. I can see myself returning to it in the future.

There are a few pretty cheap moments here and there but by and large I never really felt like it was an unfair experience. You can upgrade your character and weapons to suit your playstyle and as always, there are plenty of collectibles to find along the way that make this easier.
The only bad change things I can possibly think to say about this game is that the platforming sections just felt… off. It feels like a forced aspect to a game that didn’t necessarily need it. I don’t hate them at all, they’re kinda fun. They just feel out of place in a doom game for sure. Also (and this is kind of picky) this game functions based on you executing enemies when they are at low health and getting health from them to keep you going. The problem is, it is often times way too easy to kill an enemy too fast and miss out on that health. This results in awkward moments where you are just tapping an enemy with a weapon bullet by bullet until they trigger the execution prompt and the time wasted gets you killed, or you still end up killing them and missing the health anyways. It can be very frustrating at higher difficulties. But definitely not a deal breaker.
Bottom line, this game is awesome. The music is killer. The gameplay is adrenaline packed. And it will make you feel like a complete and utter badass. You will probably be annoyed at times about some things but the good FAR outweighs the bad.

This is maybe the best Doom have to offer, in scale and variation. I love that you can upgrade everything, and you have to fight like hell for it! And cool cosmetics for armor, weapons and demons. Fortress of Doom is excellent, and the action is awesome! But too many rooms of the same enemies, lack of enemy intros and timed missions are things that ruins some of the fun for me.

    Bottom line:
Doom 2016 was a fantastic reboot of the series and it made it seem it'd be hard if not impossible to top but Doom Eternal is the best sequel to a video game I can think of. It takes everything that worked with the original games and the reboot and enhances it. It does have some platforming sections which are pretty good ways to break up the action and it wasn't what I was expecting but it works well and creates a nice balance the pacing is fantastic and the level design even felt better than what was in the first one.

If you liked the first one, you'll probably love this and if you have game pass it's on there, so give it a shot even if this isn't usually your type of game.

You can tell a lot of passion went into this and was created with gamers in mind rather than shareholders. The one negative I have about the game is a huge one & is so frustrating that I probably won't reinstall & had to forced myself to keep playing through 1/2 the game. On the bright side Best Buy was sold out of the Deluxe edition so I only threw away $60, not $90, & no season pass.. I saw gameplay before buying with Doom Guy falling, dashing in mid jump, to double jump on a dime then dash to climb up disappearing floating rock maze before the pieces sink into lava & remember how gravity works as soon as you touch them just like Lara frikin Croft. It made exploration look more frustrating than it's worth & iD said the games environment encourages exploration so i figured the NES Ninja Gaiden sequences probably arent required to progress the story. The few clips of rage inducing, platforming I saw prior to purchase seemed like filler activities for achievement hunters & completionists, Every hint of immersion was abruptly met with another abyss to traverse & then I realized finding extra lives was pointless when they're used up by taking more fall damage than from bosses in combat. Imagine Mario in the Brotherhood of Steel....Mario 64 with power armor from Fallout and the Witcher 2 map thats how it feels to navigate this thing. I only rated as high as I did because it is good at what it sets out to do.... So I hate platforming but that doesnt make it trash because its no longer the formula that I loved. However, I hope this review saves at least one person $60 just to learn that Mirrors Edge wouldnt have been any better if it had a bad ass soundtrack & glory kills.

Oh, and the multiplayer! I I cant suggest buying just for multiplayer mode, but it is the highlight of the game for me. Its original, and creative...not just more team deathmatch, capture flag generic modes. Level up demons, unlock skins & in game customizations without loot boxes....just by playing the game, That's crazy......next they'll me that you can still play Doom Eternal without signing into. bethesda.net account.

    Cons:

    - Way too much jumping & climbing, it slows the game far too much. Some of these sequences border on the ridiculous.
    - Bullet sponge enemies, The Marauder is a pain and feels completely overpowered compared to most other enemies.
    - Set-pieces, the game feels less like a DOOM game and more like Fallout. Action sequences are spread out way too much.
    - The plot, an attempt at a back story was made but it's not particularly interesting.
    - Length, About a dozen missions, length of these varies. A fast travel system and level select allow you to replay to get all the collectibles, no replayability other than higher difficulty settings.
    - Value for money, at £60 for the basic version this could have been half of that and still not got your money's worth.
    - You MUST have a Bethesda account to play.

    Pros:

+ Action sequences, when they do come around they're fast and frantic and force you to think about the best strategy for the situation.
+ Upgrades, there's a tonne of upgrades for weapons, the suit, and skills. They use different methods/items to do so.
+ Cheats, you can replay previously completed levels with cheats active, can help with quickly replaying levels to find missed collectibles/secrets. It's a novelty though, you will get bored with this too.
+ Soundtrack is incredible, the best part of the whole experience.

    Summary:

Not as bad as I had originally reviewed it but there's no getting over this is a major disappointment compared with its predecessor, fleeting moments of high octane-action don't make up for the time wasted climbing up walls or making insane jumps across chasms. One jump in particular almost broke the game for me.

Replaying previous levels with cheats active is fun but hollow and the novelty quickly wears off. The best way to describe this whole experience is DOOM-Lite, the developers tried to change what this is at its core and it didn't work and what we're left with is a shadow of what a DOOM game should be.

Hollow, shallow, dull but with fleeting moments of intense action, at an eye-watering £60 this one release you should wait for in the sales. Avoid till then.

Overall a very fun game, but there are many things about it I dislike. I appreciate that they leaned into the RPG elements with story and variety of character upgrades while maintaining the high level of action of its predecessor.

This is going to sound counter-intuitive, but there are too many weapons, power-ups, and special abilities in Doom Eternal. All the weapons, and weapon modes, and grenades, flame belcher, chainsaw, crucible sword, blood punch and when best to use them is annoyingly complex. I love the original Doom for the simplicity of blowing up things without thinking too hard about it.

There's a lot of cut-rate RPG lore added here that expands upon the history and various factions in the world of Doom, and it's very unwelcome. It's some cheesy paint-by-numbers world-building that reminds me of Diablo's story, and it's unnecessary and just drags the gameplay in Doom. Again, I don't need to know why I'm blowing up demons. Why are they making this needlessly complicated.

There's also some light puzzle-solving of the Uncharted/Tomb Raider variety added in that I have mixed feelings about. It seems out of place for the franchise.

This version of Doom is too much of a lot of things that make the game lose focus. Less would have been more.

However it in my opinion slows down the pace and negates what made Doom 2016 so much fun. Enemies like the Marauder aren't difficult| (if your not a games journalist) they just slow down the high octane action and make you fight him one on one while your getting gang banged by like 20 demons at the same time, not to mention that a lot of the demons have weapon specific weak spots and when all of this is at the screen at the same time it's extremely overwhelming. If you liked Doom 2016 because you could go around blasting demons to heavy metal as a way to blow off steam, then you will have a bad experience with Eternal. If you liked the combat from 2016 and wanted more of it, while also being challenged even more. Then I`d highly recommend Doom Eternal, however if you loved 2016 and don`t want to strategics so much in your FPS you`d should wait for a price drop. Expand

I bought this from game pass about 8-10 months ago, and it’s damn near flawless, I could play this for hours, and if I was able to play ancient gods 1 and 2 without spending about 15€, I would, the only problem I have, is with the story, now I know Doom games are meant to be gameplay and fun value focused, but even DOOM 2016 still had pretty good storytelling, but this, I just felt confused, I just didn’t know what the hell was happening, all I knew is that I had to kill, and the way you can play this game, is just shoot the everloving **** out of everything that looks like it’ll hurt you, but you also have to chainsaw, and the strategy of this game, people call it **** but I call it big brained, because they literally made the game harder not just because: **** the customer!” But because they want you to use your brain which is a bit of a first for Doom, because before it was just: “SUPER SHOTGUN AND PUNCH PEOPLE, ****ING KILL THEM, THE WALLS ARE MELTING, MY LUNGS A-WHEEZIN’ MY HEARTS A-SEIZIN, I CAN HEAR SATAN SHOUTING NO, WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING?!” But now it’s: “chaingun, super shotgun, ballista, then super shotgun again on the people with a lot of health” I’m glad they did this. I’m REALLY glad they did this. Expand

Great game. Pure beauty of mindless slaughter. I love the games art. Gameplay and movement is smooth.

It may not reach the sublime heights of its predecessor, but Doom Eternal is bursting at the seams with hellacious action.

An absolutely spectacular game, and one of the early highlight games of 2020. Doom Eternal will make you think as you kill, pushing your mind to its limits. That’s not a bad thing. It’s the perfect trip to hell.

Doom Eternal is an outstanding entry in the series marredby a few setbacks. There is a ton of content including one of the best shooter campaigns I have played this generation. The push and pull method of the combat is addictive to master and a blast to play. Everything looks and sounds fantastic and this is a game that makes me smile as a fan since the beginning. While the generation may be coming to an end, Doom Eternal is one of the games that will send it off with a bang.
