First, did it live up to the outrageous expectations? Nope, and there's not any game out there that could if you're real and honest about it. What it is, is a fun but flawed game. The combat, the presentation, the visuals (the world's), the classes, the looting, the co-op even the pvp are all top-tier. However, there are flaws - 1. The Story is egregious, it is atrocious, it stinks. (The premise is incredible, the execution is NOT) 2. (Personal Opinion) I didn't enjoy the same starting points on levels, it kinda took you out of the immersion where you say to yourself, I was just here, and this new mission I am on is something I could have done last time I was here, rather than travel to a different planet to receive the mission and then come back and go through it all again..so yea there's a sense of repetition. 3. (From #2) Repetition - from starting points where you have to go through same bad guys, or the level structure which is exactly the same every time - go here, shoot bad guys, go there, shoot bad guys, deploy ghost, defend ghost against bad guys, mission over. A little bit of change of pace in the mission structure would be nice (But really...think about it...Halo, which gets terrific reviews every time is all about repetition - go here, shoot bad guys, go here, defend against bad guys, repeat. HOWEVER - aside from these flaws it's the most fun (well...that and Diablo III for me personally) you'll have playing video games today. Brushing aside the expectations, Destiny delivers! Expand

In reality I think this deserves a high 8 to low 9. The mechanics and game play are not revolutionary but they are addicting. And to deny it's outstanding graphics and beautiful level design is absurd. It is not necessarily open world, missions can be redundant, and the story is as vague as Titanfall's. However, it's unity between multi-player and single player are great. I do wish they allowed proximity voice chat to expand it's social elements. I do agree with it's producers and developers; after you hit the soft level cap of 20; it gets better. The customization creates an addicting element where you just want to keep gathering different forms of currency and reputation. I just wish there was back story to each character class in order to feel more of a connection with your character. Although the game has forms of achievements called Grimoire cards which expand on some of the character classes and story; I don't really think they hit their mark. I wish they would have incorporated this back story and elaboration within the main game. All and all, it may not be perfect but it is addicting and beautiful. And although it may not be what people hoped for in this iteration; I think its overall potential to incorporate it's MMO goals with great FPS game play will make for some awesome sequels and possibly expansions. I personally feel that the greatest game ever would incorporate the customization and game play of this game with the grandiose open world feel of Skyrim. Expand

There were a couple of very annoying elements in this game which unfortunately ruined the good parts.

Firstly the awful re-spawning of enemies, The aliens would re-spawn every couple of minutes, at times when I hadn't even cleared an area, and they would just return to the exact same spot without any variation whatsoever. No patrolling, no variation in enemy types, and the exact same spawn location every time. It robbed the game of any feeling of accomplishment.
Secondly why can't I turn off the annoying music. At times I had to play the game on mute just to block out the irritating drone.
Lastly the repetitive nature of the missions. Spawn in the same spot, kill the same aliens over and over again, and then wait while your ghost scans something,l while you beat off waves of aliens, and kill a boss.

Unfortunately an uninspiring, over hyped, monotonous shooter, that belongs in the bargain bin.

Zeros and Ones are just trolling. Games like Superman 64 and other obviously broken games only deserve that.

With that this, game is not a 10 either. I started a Titan and managed to get to level 8 in the single player campaign and was simply bored of it so I started going to the crucible and that's how I leveled the rest of the way. While PvP is decent, its nothing special either,

While PvP is decent, its nothing special either, nothing groundbreaking (unless you count the Titans special attack :)) either. Its all been done before and done better, with better matchmaking and better weapons variety.

Don't know why but this game just bored me, very repetitive in single player, just so-so in pvp.

The worst thing about the game is that for a claimed persistent online world, its a barren wasteland. The worlds seem dead. Other than pretty graphics, no life was given to the worlds.

First, let me say, I did not fall into the “hype” that was Destiny pre-launch. I quit falling for video game hype ages ago when my testicles dropped. I did play the beta; it was fun and left me wanting more. Second, I don’t participate in console wars, or my dick is bigger than your dick **** games…as I like to call them. I will be reviewing this game on Xbox One because that is I have. Third, take this review as it is, my **** opinion and not yours…if you don’t like it then I don’t care, and no amount of crying about this or that will change my mind. Fourth, I really can’t take many reviews for this game seriously up to this point due to the fact that they are still releasing non DLC content as we speak, but I will review it after a week of playing, even though I have yet to play a raid.
Destiny does not have a very detailed story…I am sure it is in there somewhere…maybe hidden on bungie.net with those annoying cards that keep popping up at the bottom of my screen. What Destiny does have in game is Lord Tyrion “the Imp” Lannister giving me a brief backstory on some **** that is so deep I probably wouldn’t understand it if I was sober, and definitely are not understanding it when I am drunk (and I do find that a good state of inebriation make any video game more fun). Destiny gives you enough story, but not enough to really make sense of it all. There will be no jawdrops in this one. I am sure there will be more to follow, but then again, I don’t really play mmo/diablo type “grind for better gear” games for the story…I play them to replay them at increasing difficulty levels to get better gear for my character, so I can dominate in pVe and pVp.
Graphically, Destiny is what you would expect from Bungie on an Xbox One. Fluid animations, breathtaking vistas, nice effects, dynamic lighting, all the above is there and nicely done in 1080p at 30fps. The game looks good. It sounds good too, which helps add to the immersion.
Gameplay is **** rad in this game…yes…**** rad! Character customization is limited. There are three classes, each with two subclasses, 6 ways to play. I chose a Hunter. The first bit of the game is your basic FPS with really nice halo-esque controls and gameplay. As you progress you start to become more integrated in the tower. That is when you can really start customizing your character and meeting with other players. I wish they made it easier to communicate with other players in the tower, but they did not, so **** ‘em. There is lots to do in the tower such as dance, point at people, sit on your ass, bow, pick up bounties, upgrade gear (at higher levels), decrypt engrams, etc. The tower will become more beneficial at Level 20+, until then, bounties are the **** for leveling. So for the main story part of this game it is go here, kill this, deploy your ghost, fend off waves of **** Wash , rinse, repeat. This is exactly what I expect from a game that requires you to level. This is like Diablo in the first person. Every now and then during the first 20 levels you will get some cool loot to drop…nothing Legendary or Exotic, but some uncommons and rares. Think of the first 20 levels as training. By the time you hit level 20, you will have completed the story missions, gotten comfortable with the patrols, strikes, and crucible. You will have a good understanding on how to use your character skills and how to play your character. All of this becomes essential to “end-game” content. The game really doesn’t start until level 20+, and from there it is all about getting into a party with your friends, replaying missions on increasing difficulty levels to unlock awesome gear. It is addictive, and fun. There really is a lot to do in this game, you must have the patience stick with it. Destiny is not an “instant gratification” game, it takes time to mature.
Overall, I think a lot of people have given this game a bad rap because they do not fully understand the concept of mmo type games. All they see is FPS and don’t invest the time and don’t realize that these games are about repetition. So, **** those guys. I think this game is pretty damn good, up there with Diablo III. I have been playing it on the regular for the past week, so kudos to the devs. Post level 20 with friends is badass and a lot of fun. If you don’t have friends, make some…it is easy enough to do. With all that being said, I still feel like this game is not ready to be reviewed until I have finished a raid, but I will give it a number anyway because that is all you braindead, mutant, **** really care about. I give it a 9. Haters gonna hate…bring it on!

Graphics are very good, not mind blowing, but better than I expect from 30 fps. Audio is great with gun sounds & explosions done very well and the music is very good also although not as good as Halo. I'm not sure if firing the former Halo music director Marty O'Donnell was a wise decision. Matchmaking for strikes and PvP is fast and the combat play is solid. No server crashes whatsoever. Loot drops and loot awards are random and level appropriate which is a fair and equitable system. Destiny's phone app is the one of the best I've seen allowing you to view your buddies loadouts and even equip and adjust your own loadout.

On the negative side there seems to be a love hate relationship going on with this game, a lot of it I'm sure is due to the hype train setting peoples expectations too high. The other aspect of that is people who were expecting a Mass Effect type of story from the get go. I do agree Bungie could have done a better job fleshing out the story line, maybe introducing a few more memorable characters instead of directing you to Bungie.com to learn more about the lore. That is lame this day in age. We will go to Bungie.com if there is a compelling reason to, not to learn more about the Hive or the Fallen that should have been ingame information. Hopefully they patch in an encyclopedia like the one that was in Mass Effect. Also lacking is the social aspect in the tower. The inability to chat with anyone without having to join a fireteam is just strange when they tout the social aspect of the game. Watching your character dance is not a substitute for this. As I mentioned I've played mostly with friends and I think that's what makes this game fun. For the majority of the bad reviews I bet they were playing solo, which I give Bungie credit for making the game even playable that way. I feel like Bungie is trying to draw in a huge community of solo players and slowing introduce them into the multiplayer world at a pace that makes them comfortable. The risk there is they will get turned off before they join in the multiplayer community.

I give the game an 8 and I hope in a year I can come back and give it a 9 because of the support and content that Bungie has promised to bring so the ball is squarely in Bungie's court to not burn those of us who are enjoying the game. My fear is that it will become way too repetitive and grinding and I will lose interest due to lack of content. I hope my fears are false.

The entire solar system feels smaller than the city of Washington DC in Fallout 3.

The multiplayer is the most punishing multiplayer game I've ever played. Where in most games I find myself often with a 2-3 Kill/Death ratio Destiny regularly rewards me with a 0.2 to 0.3 KD. I saw a poor soul yesterday who finished a full round with a 0.09 K/D. While supposedly the developers somewhat normalize weapon and class stats--level skill bonuses do seem to come into play as do abilities. The result is that higher level players will often completely dominate even talented low level players.

The game mechanics are also badly tuned for balance. There are more 1 hit kills than in any game I've ever played. Most firefights last less than 2-3 seconds which eliminates a lot of potential for tactical movement and teamwork. Unlike most games which have found a good balance between powerups and regular match stats, Destiny is all or nothing. You either have a weapon of incomprehensible strength or you have a pee shooter. Once someone has used their charged super power/skill it's best to just run and hide--you'll almost certainly die. There is a super power where periodically someone can simply jump into the middle of some enemies and everyone nearby will die. In a game with lots of close quarters combat that means someone appears and kills half your team within 1 second. Most matches seem to last 10 minutes or so and when you have 6 people on your team that means about once a minute you are at threat of being instakilled by someone with a fully charged powerup.

So graphics are amazing. Everything is pretty.

    Co-op intensive

It's hard to find story games that are co op intensive and fun to play.

    Different

Finally an actually new IP that isn't the same crap repeated before.

    Cons:

    Gameplay

Omg this was bad. Missions are the same. Every single dam time. Protect ghost here, fetch this, kill a bunch of these. Out of the 25ish missions there's only 4 real variations. The bosses are boring as hell. For some reason they have a god amount of HP and you stand there shooting them for 20 to 30 minutes. That's not fun gameplay for bosses. Each time I was crouched between objects so they couldn't hit me and I just shot them.

    Co-op intensive

So you can't solo this game and win. And if you don't have a set group of three friends your likely to find yourself finding random strangers and adding them to your fireteam. And I did this....until the third time I got matched with a teen that would go die in front of bosses and think its awesome...and a redneck that liked to be racist. Wasting 3 hours of my time trying to beat a boss they were underlevel for. So it's a crapshoot finding good people to play with, having them be on when your on, and them being actually skilled.

Aspects of different games rolled into one

They tried to steal from borderlands...but with no humor and no fun killing enemies so it just goes wrong. They tried to steal from MMOs...but with anti social measures in place. (PSA on reddit on making your fireteam public) They tried to steal this story from somewhere...but its just so bad there isn't one. We will tell you everything you want to know...but then we won't and call it childs fairy tale. But DLC will come and explain it all.

So is it bad game....YES. You can't just throw a bunch of money at this game, steal from every other good game out there, and expect to make a good product. There's more I want to rant about. (Maps are a joke, competitive play is kinda fun, THE LOADING TIMES...what the actual F***. This is a next gen game and you have to wait incredibly long to start a mission. And god forbid you misclick and go somewhere you didn't want to....

Why are some people finding this good? Certain MMO aspects are fun...grinding for loot, getting currency, getting the best weapons. But what most console players will not have experienced is the reality of the end game. As in the reason they put caps on currency is so you have to keep playing. Or all your gear will go to crap once the new DLC comes out. And that currency will be useless.

I really wanted to fall in love with this game. But unless you have 3 friends to always play when your on, don't mind the reality of end game, and don't care about gameplay...you should be fine? I sold my copy for 50 bucks to some Mom on CL.

If you love FPS you will undoubtedly enjoy yourself in this fantastic game.
The shooting mechanics are perfect, weapons handle really well, and there are so many skills and abilities that it will take months to really understand each classes full potential.

The story is purposefully vague, you are piecing together what happened to mankind, and although some cut scenes can feel cliché, I wouldn't have it any other way. I am a huge science fiction fan, and I think the trickle of information you receive is perfect to have you pondering what is really going on behind everything. I do admit I was expecting more character development of some key roles, but I accept this story as a sort of introduction to the world that is Destiny.

If you ever played through an FPS such as Halo a second time, just for the joy of shooting things, this is the game for you. Once you finish the 20-ish story missions, you can play any of them again (set to your level or higher to make it actually challenging) and continue earning loot/xp etc to strengthen your character. Patrol lets you loose in the semi-open maps of each planet, and while this is where you will notice the limitations of the games 'encouragement' to explore, I cant really see "I want more areas to explore" as a negative point. Strikes are a bit more challenging, but have matchmaking so you never face them alone.

Not being alone is a gigantic advantage in Destiny, not only to help out during a mission/strike/PvP match, but also just to have a great time with friends, showing off the new piece of loot you just received, or ability unlocked. There is something magical about joining a friend to find that they are pinned down, and you can make the difference between they're life and death by charging in and destroying the enemies.

At any time you can head to the Crucible for PvP Competitive game mode, and take all the abilities you have learned, along with the perks you have unlocked on your hard earned guns/armor, and face off against other guardians in typical FPS PvP game modes. Level advantages don't apply in the Crucible (except in separate special events) so everyone has a fair chance, your level 8 weapons will hit as hard as the same weapons from level 20, but if you have spent the time levelling your gun to get the fast reload perk, that will be available in PvP.

The thing that makes this game so special is that everything you do, from levelling up in PvP, Patrolling Mars to get that Relic Iron you need to level your armor, or completing the Daily Heroic Story Mission for some extra vanguard reputation, it is all beneficial to your hero, and your friends can join you anytime to help out.

This game is not perfect, but no game is, and every game I have loved in the past has had features that I feel could of made it better. I even have some ideas for Destiny, I would of loved friendly aliens, multi-form bosses, or just more content, but they are just dreams, and I can't justify criticising a game for not meeting my ridiculous expectations. Destiny is already blending together everything I love about fiction fantasy and video games; and all I really want is more of it.

Destiny is the closest thing to the perfect game that I have ever played. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys video games.

And for the 0 score reviews I say - if you can't find some happiness in this game, than maybe gaming is not for you.

i have this very minute finished the game and i can assure you its a huge let down, i had to actually YouTube the ending to make sure it was the same thing as i just witnessed, its the same concept as every other. You get on your sparrow ride through, get to a gate deploy ghost, he does his business, fight some enemies, go through a gate, kill some more goblin robots, then you are presented with fighting 3 of the boss's (all seperately) with the yellow writing (you will know what i mean if youve played it) and they are the EXACT same as the boss's from the previous level and i think they are also EASIER to kill, once youve done that the mission ending timer counts down, you go back to the tower and speak to the speaker, he does a little speech , THATS IT, not even any end credits!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is the EXACT same as every other boring level.

the only thing i like about the game is the visuals and the levelling up but thats all pointless now, unless you fancy doing the same boring stuff in crucible over and over again.

You might see a trend here with the game - "repetitive" - awful!! - oh and certainly no replay value!

the second worst ending ive ever seen in a video game behind sniperghost warrior on 360. 4/10

Great game so far! Fun if you like shooters and fun if you like RPG's. Diablo III comes to mind as far as gear, but Destiny has a much better character development system. I would have given it a 10 but the non-story missions are pretty boring. The story is fun, left a lot for the expansions coming. Stikes and cooperative play are great.

As a coop game this gets a 9 for me. To play alone without friends or PVP, I'd rank it a 7, but overall, this game is a lot of fun. This is just my opinion. I can honestly say I've been a gamer for 30+ years. At this stage in my life, I don't have the time for (or I choose to prioritize other things over) full blown MMO games. I'm also playing competitive shooters less and less (COD/BF, etc.) as the skill level of the players now days makes it a frustrating experience for me.. With my limited game time, I feel Destiny strikes a perfect balance between a fun coop shooter and an MMO RPG. High level concepts from both genres, but not exceedingly deep in either.

The competitive mode is just okay. Playing the game solo, or should I say, antisocially...is just okay. Co-op, however, has been a fun and rewarding experience that will keep me playing for a while. I have 5 buddies all around my age who also purchased the game. We've been tackling missions on the hardest settings and building our characters to compliment each other's strengths & weaknesses. When I do have time to play, I have had a blast with this game and all of my friends feel the same way. There's just enough of an RPG element to keep me wanting to play more, upgrade and make my character as bada** as I can. As a shooter it satisfies my desire to shoot things and embark on these strange lands with friends and kick a** together. This game is made to be played socially in order to really get the full experience. However, I think those wanting a hardcore competitive shooter, or a deep MMO experience will find themselves lacking. This likes somewhere casually between the two. The best experience in my own opinion has been playing co-op. Setting the difficulty high and having to really watch each other's backs, save up your special attacks for the perfect moment, etc. All of these things keep things intense and very enjoyable. I love this game but if you don't have friends who will play with you, it might not be as fun for you.

I wouldn't trust any review on here that was done the day the game was released or within the first couple of days. Crucible starts to get fun after you have all your stuff unlocked. I'm not sure what people expected day one with the crucible. It was similar to playing COD without any perks except a double jump. Expand

Destiny is a very ambitious game by all means. It's great to see a new spin on the first person shooter with the developer, Bungie, presenting the idea of the game being a shared world shooter that would engross you into a world ever presently filled with other players progressing through the game just as you are as well. It's great to see a new spin on the first person shooter with the developer, Bungie, presenting the idea of the game being a shared world shooter that would engross you into a world ever presently filled with other players progressing through the game just as you are as well. As a shooter, the game is very tight and is what you would expect from the studio that created Halo. Additionally, the diversity of weapons and loot is vast and should keep any fan of RPG's pacified.

Now I would like to talk about the negatives. The story of Destiny is simply nonexistent and its gameplay is repetitive at times. As someone who has followed its development since its initial announcement, I feel like I knew just as much about the game and its setting than when I finished the campaign. The game sets up a few characters that never really get expanded upon at all. Additionally, Bungie has put a huge emphasis on fireteams in the game. Fireteams are a group of three people that join into a party and jointly complete objectives. However, the game lacks any social options to talk with other players unless they are already in your fireteam. The only time the game will actually assign you a fireteam is when you participate in a Strike mission, which usually contains a main boss, a mini boss right before the main boss and at some point you have to hold an objective while your electronic companion, Ghost, fiddles with something. Additionally, for a game that puts such an emphasis on teamwork, it never shows your team in any sort of cutscenes nor does it reward you for being in a team in any way that you couldn't have also been rewarded as a solo player. Additionally, for all the work you do to drive back "The Darkness", you never see a result of your actions appear in game, especially at the end game. I won't even get started on the voice acting because I'm sure that's been driven into the ground on the internet anyways.

As far as multiplayer goes, there are a few playlists and cumulatively it is decent. The concept that everything your character has in his inventory in the single player can be used in the multiplayer is a neat idea for a seamless transition between the two but it is also the biggest drawback. Because of this, everyone can bring a rocket launcher, everyone can bring a light machine gun, everyone can bring a sniper rifle and so on. Everyone's weapons are scaled back to an equal level in order to keep lower and higher level players on equal terms, so the defining difference is who has what perk enabled for their weapon. One such perk is homing rockets or exploding sniper bullets. Certainly you could see how having that in a multiplayer match could be a problem.

Overall, I feel like I paid 60 dollars to simply shoot things to level up to shoot bigger things and collect money so my character looks pretty. It seems somewhere along the developmental line of the game that the developer dropped off the story and focused simply on making a shooter. The result is a well polished shooter that is lacking in all aspects beyond that. I hope to see problems such as the story remedied in the two upcoming expansions currently planned for the game. Additionally, I expect more multiplayer updates will come in time that will balance it out.

As someone who has been a longtime fan of Bungie, followed the game for years and played it for 30+ hours now with a level 24 character, I can not say this is bad game. I like it but there are certainly strong and prevalent problems that I would love to see remedied in the future.

A common comparison I keep seeing is that Destiny should be the Star Wars of video games. For a time, I thought the same thing, and was ultimately disappointed by Destiny during my time with the Beta. After the Beta closed, a strange thing happened: I missed playing Destiny. Mostly because of one thing. It is fun. Really fun. The gun play is spot on. The loot is varied enough that finding it is exciting. The plot (while not up to the standards of "Star Wars" is pretty good for a shooter. I couldn't recite the plots to any FPS at this point. They're all pretty standard. Can anyone remember Halo's plot, other than Master Chief is on a Halo and shoots a bunch of aliens and eventually blows up the Halo? It looks to me that Destiny's plot is pretty on point with Halo's. It seems really re-playable too. That might be the most important aspect to a game for me. The plot could be the video game equivalent of "Citizen Kane" but it won't matter if I don't want to fully invest my time to play it. In the end, this is just my opinion. I think Destiny is really fun and worth the investment in time and money. Expand

Long version: Destiny definitely did not live up to the hype. For starters, I don't think there is anyone who truly knows what is going on in the game, unless they have gone and researched it- which should not be the case. I learned nothing more about the Destiny universe than I already knew going into the game. The story mode was (to me) worse than Titanfall which some would say didnt have one at all. The whole "Go here and do this and return" aspect of missions grew old and after a while my sole reason of playing was to level up and find rare armor and play in the Crucible (pvp matches). I was let down into thinking I would relive the glory of a sci-fi game like Mass Effect which entrenched you in a universe where you grew to love characters and could lose yourself in its story... Destiny failed miserably to do that.
When it comes to multiplayer it shines, because Destiny is meant to be played with friends. The hordes of enemies need to be precisely chopped down and the best way is with friends whom you can communicate with. PVP matches however get repetitive, mostly because everyone is balanced. If I knew I could be killed by a level 5 when I am a 24, I wouldnt have made the effort to improve. Sure abilities can be improved but your armor and weapons dont have the same effect as they do in the story mode, which is a real let down.

I'll end it here. Basically if you haven't purchased this game, don't worry about it. Play Halo and you'd have played the Destiny multiplayer. Looking for a sci-fi universe filled with great detail and characters you can relate to and grow to love, play a game like Mass Effect. Want to gain crazy loot, play Borderlands. While some have criticized a perceived lack of compelling story, I disagree here. True, Destiny is light on exposition, it's also very minimal on menu interface, and transitions through games modes, seamless. This spoke to me as an Bungie's intention to create a world that is instantly available, rich but unimposing, allowing those who crave the lore of something like Halo to explore more through collectible 'Grimoire' entries and the supplementary companion app. I'm nearly level 20(the soft cap) and feel like there's so much more to see and do in this joy of a genre-bending title. From the extremely tight and responsive controls, to the vast, wonderful and gorgeous environments, to the crisp graphics, the intriguing storyline, the excellent art direction, the seamless multiplayer, the bungie-mastered competitive multiplayer, the expansive single player, the CONSTANTLY rewarding leveling system.....I could go on and on here.

Spending time in Destiny's world and in it's game experience is a treat. I cannot remember the last time I played a game that felt so good, that I genuinely didn't even care if another cutscene came on or not. While other games (such as the Metal Gear Series) still think its 1996 and cutscenes are impressive enough to wow the gamer, Destiny prides itself on its gameplay being more enthralling than watching a story. Which makes sense, because the medium is VIDEO GAMES....not movies. Playing the game feels unlike any shooter, but also like every shooter(?). Its a weird mashup that feels incredibly tight and enjoyable throughout your entire experience. This game will EASILY eat up 20+ hours and more if you want to get into the hidden co-op exclusive missions that ONLY UNLOCK when you reach level 20.

I LITERALLY have no clue as to WHY the hate for this game exists vs. any of the 8 million other shooters where your their TRUE only objective is....go here...shoot things. I think expectations were unrealistic for this game CLEARLY. It's a PHENOMENAL experience one that belongs on a next generation console and is worth every penny of $60 dollars. Nuff said.

THERE IS NO WAY I would not recommend this game if you are at all interested in a refreshing shooter that feels and looks like it belongs on your brand new $400 and up video game box. There is just too much here, too well done, to ignore and give a mediocre ranking to. Do NOT let these reviewers confuse you.............this is a MASTERFUL game that shows what a talented team can do when they work on a passion project.

    Just. So. Terribly. Disappointing!
Bungie has stolen the best ideas and mechanics from some amazing games; Halo, Borderlands, WOW, Guild Wars 2, Mass Effect etc etc. The problem is they've "borrowed" these ideas, mashed them together and completely failed at all of them. The loot system sucks which makes the grinding totally unrewarding. Diablo 3 nailed the grind for loot mechanic as did

The loot system sucks which makes the grinding totally unrewarding. Diablo 3 nailed the grind for loot mechanic as did Borderlands but this is just dull loot that ads a point or two more armour and maybe a small perk like more ammo capacity.... Yawn!
The shooting mechanic is good, feels smooth and precise so that's a plus. However, all you're shooting at is the same dudes with ever increasing hit points. Wait around for more bad guys to spawn and shoot them, rinse and repeat.
This game was advertised as an MMO and on back do the box it says 1-12 players. Imagine then my disappointment when me and three mates booted up the game for the first time, played the tutorial level, met up in the Tower, had a dance, got bored and thought lets do a mission. Proceeded to mission screen only to discover you can only play with a team of three! Seriously... W.T.F??? This is Bungie's idea of an MMO? So the MMO aspect is that you can stand in a bland boring town and point at each other or sit on the ground. Oh also you can dance you say? Wow, just wow...
To clarify my progress in the game so far; I'm Level 8, put maybe 10 hours into it, done all the Earth missions and some Crucible multiplayer (will stick to Titanfall). After all this I've come to the conclusion that Bungie has created the most expensive polished turd in the history of video games.
3/10 for nice graphics and smooth game engine. Pity about everything else the game has to offer...

This game is incredibly average. The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).

The story is basically Halo 1, but less fun because what little voice acting there is feels wooden and you never do anything that makes you feel remotely cool like escaping an exploding space ship in a car (admit it, when you were young and did that the first time you felt like a bad ass).
Every mission is literally exactly the same, land on a planet, fight to a secluded area, have your Ghost activate something then fight off waves of enemies, then after the waves a boss either spawns, or you head a little further in and fight a boss. That is it... every single mission in the storyline is exactly that, and the boss fights aren't even fun because there are no mechanics to it, you essentially hide behind something when they attack and then step out to fire.
Then you have the side mission of which there are only 4 variations, you either have to kill a bunch of enemies, kill a specific enemy, go somewhere and scan something, or kill a bunch of enemies and gather a certain item which is essentially the same as just killing a bunch of enemies.
The weapon and loot system is basically the same as borderlands except with at best a 10th of the variety. There are 9 weapon types, many of which are very similar, and within those types there is absolutely no variation.
Now you would think the online play would be redeeming, after all a game is much more fun with more people. Except the people you see playing have virtually no way to contact you or speak to you. There is no point in teaming up to do a mission since they are so incredibly easy, even "hard" mode isn't that much of a challenge.
The only online feature I enjoyed was the "strike" or dungeon system which was kind of fun because some bosses were vaguely difficult, but they did follow the same lack of mechanics as other bosses.

Pvp is not half as enjoyable as the mega-fans would have you believe. I think it would be better if there were more of it in the open world, but instead you get put into a limited arena. Once there you will notice how horribly unbalanced combat is. Since a titan has more survivability and there is virtually no difference in damage between the classes since everyone uses the same pool of weapons you either play as titan or die. Hunters can occasionally do well, but thats mostly because of the grenade that homes in when enemies get close and the ridiculously overpowered throwing knife which no other class has anything remotely comparable. Also forget about getting any kills without a sniper rifle, but thats pretty similar to many online shooters.
The world looks kind of pretty, but the graphics look more like mid last gen than early current gen. So the area you actually play in can look pretty dull, but the backdrop is beautiful.
The vehicle system is weak at its best moments, and I feel pretty ripped off with that crappy sparrow from pre-ordering.
Honestly it isn't too awful, the gameplay is moderately fun, but it is nothing new and personally i believe Halo did it better. It helps that I have a couple friends with the game and we play online on occasion.

I promise I am not just someone who is pissed that the game did not live up to the hype, but they definitely made some big promises on the originality and vast content and we have seen none of that. It isn't even like I haven't given the game a decent try, believe me when I say that I really, reeeeaaallllyyy, wanted to love this game. I played a Warlock all the way to 20 and have about 5 levels into a titan, I might work on a hunter to see if it is any better, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As for my particular score, I personally believe it should have a 6 or 7, but somebody has to counter the massive influx of undeserved perfect scores when at the very best this game might get an 8, and only if you had incredibly low expectations and very little experience with shooters.

Update: In a continued attempt to enjoy this game I played more. I had previously hit level 20, but other than a Mars Strike I didn't do much playing after level 20, so I decided to try some vanguard strikes and some other stuff. That is why I lowered the score which was previously a 5/10. All the people saying the game really opens up after level 20 either haven't hit level 20 or are total idiots. What happens is you get access to vanguard strikes which are essentially the same strikes you have been doing but with higher level enemies... that is it, no new content, the loot is awful (I did the level 20 strike and got a level 16 piece of gear), and in general the game actually got worse.

Now many people are saying that the game is going to get so much better with dlc and all of this other junk. I for one did not pay full price for less than half of a game, and I resent being required to pay $35 for what is bound to be another small portion of said game.

If it were possible to get my money back from Bungie I would.

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to.
