It would be entirely understandable for a person to come into this review thinking that roguelikes are a dime a dozen these days and that this particular game is no different from the rest of the lot. However, between the traits mentioned above and the card attack system, I feel that Dandy Ace does enough to be a good game in its own right and to be a game that makes for quite the showstopper to stand out from amongst the crowd. I had a great deal of fun navigating the world of Dandy Ace, seeing what each new area had in store for me, and seeing what card combinations I could come up with. Hopefully, upon taking your own trip into the world of the Magic Mirror, you’ll come away feeling a touch of magical delight as well.

Dandy Ace is a great first roguelike and a fun take on the genre. Its very fun combat, not too sharp too fast difficulty, quick load times, and lack of central hub or anything to drag the time between runs on makes it extremely playable and very easy to get sucked into.

Dandy Ace is solid roguelike that should appeal to fans of the genre. It’s a shame the story can’t be as magical as its setting and appearance, but at the very least the combat is engaging and the option to play your way is a welcome addition. If you’re willing to invest some time, there’s much to discover within.

Fans of the recently popular isometric roguelike genre will find familiarity in Dandy Ace. They will also find a sense of uniqueness. Though an interesting move-set building mechanic, you will find yourself battling the RNG at times, but at least you are always building towards progression no matter how far a run may take you.

So how do you make a case for Dandy Ace? You could say that it’s easy on the eyes. In the hands too, it feels good, with controls that are slick and combat that delivers heft. But it can feel more like a treadmill than a journey, as too little changes with each run, and you’re left with the sneaking suspicion that you are going nowhere.

An over-the-top but average roguelike game with an interesting card-upgrade system, crazy and colorful setting and flamboyant, eccentric aesthetics. It is certainly worth a try, but there's nothing... “magical” about it.

But it has a number of shortcomings that spoil the game a little on repeated playthroughs.

The graphic style in the game is pretty colorful, a bit rustic in the animations, but it will do. The game also has a pretty good soundtrack, but the problems begin in the gameplay. This is a roguelike that you need to complete 4 times on different difficulties, but there is no point in going through more than normal difficulty - you will collect 85% of all improvements for the first full playthrough. The rest will fall SO RARE that I've beaten the game 4(!) times and still haven't collected all the upgrades, simply because they don't want to fall.

Also, if you pump all the improvements for a special currency (mirror shards), then they will simply accumulate in your pockets like scrap. They can neither be converted into gold nor can you buy strong cards with them. This is a gross miscalculation, like many little things in the game. Starting from the fact that the animations of the attacks of the enemies in the priority are higher than the animations of your dodges, and the fact that there are only 4 bosses in the game, which do not become stronger with increasing difficulty, they just deal more damage. There are many builds with weapons and accessories in the game, but it turned out, as always, that only 1 combination of trinkets is effective, and 2-3 combinations of combat cards.

Overall, it's nice to play once, only take on a discount or with a Game Pass subscription. Glory to Ukraine!
