Virtua Tennis 2009 is still a great tennis game, and it arrives at the right moment, far enough from the last installment for sports fans to want a little more of Virtua Tennis. The only thing to criticize is the few changes in comparison with the last game.
-
SEGA has served up as a great sequel, fixing problems with Virtua Tennis 3 though going that step further with an extended SPT Tour.
-
Sumo Digital's latest isn't the revolutionary step in the franchise we were hoping for, but its refined looks and gameplay mechanics have deemed it fit for any loungeroom Federer.
-
Virtual Tennis hasn't changed much since 1999 and is still the leader of its genre. Whoever likes arcade sports games should consider getting this game.
-
Only the on-line modes and the Davis Cup separate it from the previous games of the series. SEGA must think about where they want to take the saga, because the stagnation can start being dangerous.
-
VT has always been a party game, and it pulls that off well enough to excuse the rough edges. If the more technical Top Spin 3 is posh dinner in polite company, this is a pie and a pint with friends - a little boisterous, maybe, but you don't need etiquette to have a good time.
-
I feel any true fan of the Virtua Tennis games can be happy with Sumo Digital’s work with Virtua Tennis 2009, as they have kept the perfectly solid gameplay mechanics and modes as solid as they were, but tweaked and adapted where deemed necessary.
-
While perhaps not moving on leaps and bounds, Virtual Tennis 09 will still offer enough to keep tennis and arcade fans alike happy.
-
They took a long time for the development of Virtua Tennis 2009. Why? There’s actually nothing new around.
-
There was room for improvement, but Virtua Tennis 2009 offers few changes. If you already have the last chapter of the series is hard to recommend this new one. No doubt, the game offers an enjoyable gameplay experience.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 plays a better, more compelling game than any other tennis game around, but it is still fundamentally more of the same. Nonetheless, if you're in the market for a new set of balls, then this is certainly a game that you'll love.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is actually sort of a copy of Virtua Tennis 3 with some little improvements. But a game doesn't always have to be revolutionary to be a good and very entertaining, like Virtua Tennis 2009.
-
Games Master UKSega's dated crowd-pleaser still charms, but it's arguably no longer an essential buy. [July 2009, p.70]
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is a well crafted game, which will remind you of the previous episodes under too many respects to feel somehow like a new title in its own. It's still a good game and one of the best tennis games out there, but the times, during which Virtua Tennis would have left you staring in awe, are definitively gone.
-
The blurb on the back of the Virtua Tennis 2009 cover states “The World’s No.1 Tennis Series Returns” – but the big question is: Does it return with anything new? The answer is no, nothing worth making a song and dance about anyway.
-
This is still a solid tennis game but it is also one that offers almost no improvement over its predecessor.
-
A solid effort that just does not live up to the great first Virtua Tennis.
-
Chances are that if you’ve played Virtua Tennis 3 you may be slightly disappointed, as the usual high bar that is the VT series hasn’t been quite reached this time round, and 2009 is quite similar to VT3 to begin with.
-
Virtua Tennis really needs to start justifying its existence at this point. It’s more of the same with some minor additions, and is only recommendable if you missed the previous games. With other tennis games competing for the top spot, Virtua can’t be complacent for one more game. Evolution is a must.
-
If you haven't already picked up Virtua Tennis 3, Virtua Tennis 2009 is worth a look since it offers more content, including the online world tour option. For everyone else, though, it's too much of a rehash to warrant a purchase, even at its discounted 50 dollar price tag.
-
It's hard not to feel a little underwhelmed by what Virtua Tennis 2009 has to offer. While the online multiplayer facet has undoubtedly been improved, the disappointment over what's been done to World Tour mode and the general lack of ambition in certain areas leaves me wanting.
-
Despite the fact that all the evidence suggests Virtua Tennis is a series stuck in a rut, Virtua Tennis 2009 is still great fun, especially in multiplayer.
-
A solid tennis game but underwhelming in most areas.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is a game dedicated to the fans of the series and more in general a good, arcade tennis game. If you already own the third chapter, you should think carefully before buying, anyway, as, even if it's the best of the brand, it doesn't evolve so much from the predecessor.
-
Virtua Tennis feels like a decent tennis-game. It, however, will never feel like a revolution due to the lack of new gameplay elements. Even though Sega has put in some nice and entertaining, but very small, adjustments. Virtua tennis has easily reached its full potential.
-
2009 version is very similar to Virtua Tennis 3. So, this new chapter inherits from its ancestors the flaws related to an arcade approach to the discipline.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is, like every other game in the Virtua Tennis-series, a great game. But there are not many news since the last version so if you already got a Virtua Tennis for your current-gen console you can stick with that. But if you haven´t, and love tennis, then this is a must buy.
-
Xbox World 360 Magazine UKIt still definitely has its charms, but - on court - it's feeling older than Ilie Nastase. [Aug 2009, p.84]
-
A good tennis game, let down by a frustrating slow campaign and terrible loading times.
-
However, the franchise is in risk of going stale and not pushing more boundaries in other areas while maintaining the excellent gameplay.
-
Virtua Tennis needs to try much harder if it’s going to regain its title as the preeminent tennis franchise.
-
It's a slight advancement over its predecessor, VT 3, but its biggest weaknesses, the online and single-player modes, mire an otherwise satisfying experience.
-
Still the same accessible knockabout it always was, but growing a little too familiar.
-
games(TM)As a retail product, this just isn't strong enough to be called a sequel. A shame considering how pleasing Sega's arcade sim can still be. [July 2009, p.118]
-
A disappointment for me. Maybe it’s because I’m a rabid tennis fan and player and I wanted more from the series this year, or maybe it’s because I feel like I’ve played this game before on the Dreamcast.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 isn't a bad game - it's more fun than most sports games with three other people at hand - but it certainly isn't a good game. Go and get Virtua Tennis 3 or Top Spin 3 if you desperately need a tennis game on your Xbox 360 though - they're both better.
-
Don't get me wrong. Virtua Tennis 2009 isn't bad, but it isn't stellar either.
-
Virtua Tennis is too easy and inconsistent to entertain you for long.
-
AceGamezSadly though, for now Virtua Tennis 2009 is only probably worth a look if you've missed the last couple of iterations; otherwise it might be best to hope that VT 2010 is a little more enticing and give EA's new Grand Slam Tennis a look instead.
-
Virtua Tennis 2009 is a prime example of a game treading water that desperately needs an overhaul.
-
The only reason to buy this game could be to play it with friends, especially if they're casuals, seen the very immediate gameplay and simple controls. But due to a disappointing AI, a mediocre technical production and the lack of depth in the gameplay simulation, Virtua Tennis 2009 isn't recommended to hardcore virtual tennis players.
-
Truly, Virtua Tennis 2009 is little more than a lazily rehashed and less than polished iteration of what was offered in Virtua Tennis 3.
-
Simply put: do not buy Virtua Tennis 2009. There is absolutely no reason to buy this over the superior (and cheaper) VT3.
