Red Dead Redemption is a very fun and excellent game. The story line is very long and suspenseful and the mini games are always enjoyable. Though at some points you feel a little disapointed, overall this game is one you should have on your wish list.

Pretty good open world game with an underused western theme. The revenge and redemption of John Marston hooks you into the story and game play, which are pretty decent. Your character John seems bi-polar at seems points and despite your actions in the game (lawful or criminal) will completely act neutral though most of the story.

Game play can get a bit repetitive and you will NEED deadeye in the harder parts of the game if you decide to take off the casual auto-lock aim(lol casuals). Overall a fun game worth your time with a twist ending

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe not the best from rockstar, but certainly not the worst. It isn't exactly GTA 4 set in the wild wild west, but anyone who has played gta 4 will find similarities with rdr and gta 4 . But perhaps Red Dead Redemption's greatest asset is it's story. It's a story that really makes the gamer feel the pain and agony of the protagonist. The side missions are varied and fun and also have a significant impact on either you fame or honor or maybe even both depending on how you complete the missions. Overall, this game may not satisfy those who anticipate a carbon copy of gta 4 set in the wild west, but it will definitely satisfy or even touch those looking for an engaging story, some fun side missions and an immersive last frontier experience such as myself. Well done Rockstar. Expand

Red Dead Redemption is a hard game for me to review. On the one hand, I want to approach it fairly and with an open mind, but on the other, I have a passionate hatred for how one big-name reviewer in particular gave it a ridiculous number of Game of the Year awards.

So, even with my hatred towards westerns *pauses* I actually liked this game. It's by far one of the best games Rockstar has released to date. Great characters, Great story, great gameplay, and such a huge variety of things to do and places to explore. The only reasons I don't score this any higher are primarily because of mty detestment towards westerns, and also because as great as this game is, it also doesn't do too much that we haven't seen before somewhere else, this includes the story (I may hate westerns, but that doesn't mean I haven't seen any.) The storyline is probably the best one you will ever encounter in video games. You may find John Marston a little unlikeable at first, but if you give him a little time you will fall in love with him. The game is about John Marston trying to get his family back from the government by hunting down people from his old gang. The story is about 20 hours long if you just do the main missions, to 40 hours if you are going for the 100%.

The world is truly stunning, and there are a lot of great places to visit. It surprises me when people say there is nothing to do, because the game does hold quite a lot of things to do. You can play poker or blackjack against computers, do some jobs for the local towns, go bounty hunting for a bit of change, and much more. Besides, if you can imagine something to do within the world, you probably can do it.

The multiplayer is very innovating. When you enter multiplayer you will be dropped into free roam. This is where you can ride through the world identical to the single player environment. However, you come across other people. If you don't feel up to the free roam, there is a suite of game modes for you to play.

The unfortunate part of the game is that it still has bugs and glitches. Fortunately most of these bugs don't limit the game, but are very strange. I have come across a particularly nasty bug that rendered my game unplayable. This was terrible because I had to go out and buy another new copy of the game to be able to play it again.

I give this game an 8. Everything about it is amazing and you can tell Rockstar Games put lots of care into making this game, but the bugs prove to be annoying and can even break the game. If you have any interest in playing a new game, pick this up and you won't regret it.

Small things like this make the game not fun to play. Additionally the need to constantly press and hold the button for everything. Why can I not get the money from bounty hunting directly? Why do I have to put the bounty in a cell and then walk to a desk and collect my money from a table? It would be nice to see more games like this in the future and with the new grand theft auto i'm sure rockstar company will be making a new game or continue one because the amount of money they made could result in another a++ game.

For the repetitveness of the shootouts and the lack of fun things to do out in the game's vast fields (along with the annoyingly long horseback rides to the majority of objectives), I can't agee that this game is a masterpeice, although I can see why some think it is. The gameplay is satisfying, the open world is beautiful, and although some may consider the graphics dated I would say that the dark character designs and colour schemes suit the themes of the game absolutely perfectly. Much like the Grand Theft Auto series, the game is full of politcial and social commentary, and, although it's entertaining to sit through, it seems like the game focuses too much on completely basing their characters on these satires, instead of being fleshed out and properly written. Throughout the entire game, characters such as Nigel West Dickens, Abraham Reyes and The Professor get more screentime and mentions than Bill, Javier or even Dutch. The satire is interesting, sure, but Dutch Van Der Linde is MORE interesting! A gang falling apart at the end of the old west with a crazed leader is MORE interesting! The Pinkerton Detective Agency holding John's family at ransom is MORE interesting! Even though rockstar have so much to work with, these story points seem to be overshadowed so much by the satire that it makes the story seemingly have no substance to it. It is clear that rockstar realised their mistake here, probably why they went with a less satirical focus with the second game. Despite all of this, the atmosphere and feeling to the game is impeccable, and the story still manages to keep you engaged with more interesting missions invloving the three main antagonists being brought up at just the right time to keep you on the edge of your seat. Great acting, great animation and graphics... but a storyline that really drags on predictably. And I'd swear the cast lines and actors were ripped from GTA IV with a western twist. People praise the story and voice work in this game, but I don't see how the story compares to an epic saga like Bioshock, Halo, Uncharted or Mass Effect. If you buy this game, get the Game of the Year edition which has the Zombies DLC and several other bonus features. Expand

Definitely play it. It's a classic at this point and a must play. Also not too long with its 17h of main story and at least as much of extra content if not more.

also: Horse-back riding is for this game what ship-'driving' was for Assassin's Creed IV: Essential for immersion and masterfully implemented. You could just ride from one end of the map to the other and it would probably feel great

Ok, go play the game for about 4 hours first (why it's not the first thing you get I have no idea...also, still haven't unlocked it in MP after another 4 hours spent there). Really the multiplayer is one of the problems because they could have done so much more with it. Why can't I play the poker/blackjack mini-games against my friends? Why do they remove most of the civilians and such from the cities? Why does my money disappear every time I leave someplace instead of being used like XP for upgrades? If I break the law, why do the sheriffs only come after me instead of the posse? Just a few of the problems with what realistically was the main selling point of the game. It suffers from "Elder Scrolls syndrome" where you have a wide open world to explore and ransack, but you end up sitting there not sure what to do or where to go. And finally, the cutscenes and side conversations are too long and do little to build any kind of story or interest. 3/5 SP, 3/5 MP. Expand

After giving me all that crap, then you come and tell me that a game deserves 10/10 because it is identical to its predecessor with a new skin? Didn't the same thing happen to MW2? How long are you critics going to give us this bullshit? I quote myself from another website: "I know how this will turn out, critics will give it 10/10s around the world (because they get carried away with hype, not what you expect from so called "professionals"), millions of people will buy it because of the bullshit they just bought, and 2 weeks in the bitching will start and it wont stop until 2015. Then later on critics will be too scared to hate on the game or not give it GOTY because they will be ruining their own reputation by denying what they themselves had previously said. Then we will have to wait for websites like VG charts to give it biggest disappointment because they don't do reviews. You can quote me on this." And everything seems to be going as planned so far. Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you about this game. And what it actually is. Just GTA IV, with a new skin. GTA IV had some of the biggest flaws in gaming, like lock on shooting (even though other developers stopped using that design a long long time ago.). That is not the only problem as GTA IV had some of the most repetitive missions. I could go on for hours about GTA IV but I wont, even I was stuck under the hype, first week or so I played it and I thought it was the most amazing game ever, then I realized what a piece of shit it was. Dont buy this game, don't support idiots like Activision and Rockstar, they are practically ruining the industry, they are sending out a bad message to other developers "make the same identical shitty game as the old one and give a new number next to the name and every body will buy it LOLOLOLOL". None of this matters to the player however. What matters to the player is that the game offers NONE TO LITTLE CHALLENGE and looks to film history more than it does to game history. This is a game for idiots, to be frank. A game where you hide behind rocks and press the right trigger to win. Move cattle by pressing foward long enough. Etc, etc. It's a boring game. The little movie clips in between the missions, especially the ones where you can move about on horseback (oooh, interactive storytelling!) are excellent when compared to its predecessor. Whilst I am a fan of Rockstar games they really need to freshen up their writing as the protagonists are becoming interchangable. John Marston's dialog could have easily come out of Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz or Luis Lopez's mouths. I am finding that NPC's are often portrayed as creepy, desperate leeches or (for the female characters) vulnerable, delicate love interests. Aside from having samey characters the biggest frustration is that the story is thrust upon you. You are often forced to ride long distances listening to dreary, unfunny, chatter whilst doing nothing more difficult than holding the A button (to ride your horse alongside your companion). When you get to a mission the gameplay is dull, simple and repetitive - you will more or less complete the game and die only a handful of times.
The game looks stunning, helped by excellent lighting and animations and the sound design helps build atmosphere (especially the rain effects!) but Red Dead Redemption is more of a tech. demo than a challenging game. If Rockstar allowed you to tell your own story within their games rather than being fixated on replicating movies then they would make something truly timeless, unfortunately this game is a miss in my book.

Riding to and from missions I would be distracted by things along the roads. Just dicking around is where I had my most fun! Sadly though, for me at least, those two points summarize the good in RDR. The storyline is little more than annoying. It seems no-one has anything actually interesting to do in the Wild West. Some quest ideas are great, but the implementation of their mechanics is boring at best. Roping a bandit? Awesome! Nope. Lasoing is frustrating at the best of times. Cattle drives? Yessir! Nope. Riding back and forth behind a herd is as boring as it sounds. The characters themselves are just over-the-top stereotypes of classic wild west characters. They're just not likeable. All this to say that the world itself is wonderful, it just is NOT filled with anything as spectacular as it is. But this was the same problem as GTA. Missions are no lasting fun, but making your own fun is too easy for that to be a big deal. For me though story is everything and that is why I gave RDR a 6. Expand

can anyone tell me why is this game so ducking overrated???? it is repetitive as hell and veeeery boring. the beginning was fun but the rest was simply repulsive. I would not recommend playing this game in 2018. it might have been fun in 2010 but nowadays it is no fun at all.

Activities like hunting for rabbits, plucking flowers, training horses, and herding cattle. None of it is challenging. It's all just designed to waste your time. And after a few hours you'll realize that it's just exactly that: A waste of time. Expand

When I kill a bounty, why does his henchmen spawn non-stop to kill me, again and again, until I go back to town, and then forget all about me? Why does 50 people who wants a NPC dead wait through weeks of him alone in the wilderness, until I join him, before they try to kill him - and why do they suddenly stop when I reach another point in the wilderness (no, not a fort or a city or anything, just a curve in the road in the middle of nothing)

Why, when on a barge in the middle of the river, being pulled along a rope, does the rope bend AGAINST the current? Why, upon saving the life of a person, will this person refuse to talk to you at all afterwards? Why, when I found a horse, sat on top, and was told hey, that's mine,, then climbed back off the horse does the owner still run to the law to say I stole his horse? Why does the game then tell me the law is coming to arrest me - only to have me, standing completely still, no weapon drawn, gunned down from behind? If you can overlook the complete failure to make the setting feel like a desolate western, the throngs of people without any kind of personality at all and the lack of coherence in structuring a society, the scenery does offer some beauty,

Can't do half the things you can do in a GTA game. Die when entering waist deep water. Retarded fast traveling system. Pointless awards from challenges. Riding a horse isn't nearly as fun as riding a car. Accidentally target someone and you get into a lot of trouble. Controls suck as if you're used to keyboard mouse. Can't tell friends from enemies in a gun fight.

It's a sandbox game made by control freaks who put systems in the game that punish the player for doing anything more than bumping into an NPC. It invalidates the point of the sandbox genre. If GTA III, VC, or SA had attached a permanent character penalty every time you ran over a pedestrian, they would not have been popular games. RDR should not be a popular game. For example, out in the middle of nowhere with no other people around, a law officer chased an outlaw to get his bounty. I stepped in to help, shot the bounty, and in response both the bounty and the officer start shooting at me. So I kill both, incur a -200 'Honor' penalty, and game pop-ups messages telling me it's going to lock my out of quests and erase my save file if I don't start playing like a nice boy. It's pants on head stupid, it completely defeats the purpose of the sandbox genre, and removes all the fun from the game. This is less like an actual game and more akin to some kind of virtual training simulator for dogs, where the players are the dogs, being trained to do completely pointless and unrewarding things for no purpose that they have to do anyways because that's what the designers wanted. The entire game is designed as an anti-fun just follow instructions control freak's training exercise. It's basically an interactive cut-scene simulator, where every single moment and every event that occurs in the game is scripted according to what the developers wanted or did not want the player to do. It has almost zero actual entertainment value, and as noted, not a single critique on this site leads to the game's most obvious flaw and are all basically invalid or I wouldn't have left this review. Unfortunately, this game is an epic bore. It is (mostly) well done technically, just totally uninteresting in its story and gameplay and offers no continuous fun or genuine excitement. I really was hoping for a video game version of Deadwood - lawlessness vs the establishment, debauchery, violence, drunkenness, whoring, double crossing, etc - but this ended up being what I imagine the PBS version of the Wild West must be like: very tame and dull. I got about 4-5 hours into the campaign before I decided it was just never going to get any better and sold it. In the 5 hours I played it I picked flowers, herded cattle, lassoed horses, and had some shootouts that were less interesting and challenging than Whack-A-Mole. The protagonist is wooden and dull (although he is supposed to be some bad-ass ex-gang mofo). The story did have some thematic promise but was ultimately just very unengaging, and the characters that aren't dead weight are overwrought caricatures that just added a silly cartoon-like quality to an otherwise serious endeavor. The actual in-game graphics are beautiful and the terrain is incredibly well done. However, the cutscenes are pretty terrible with awful renderings of the faces (but honestly, that's the case for most games) and go on way too long. After 5 hours the story and gameplay never developed to the point to get me genuinely engaged about any of the characters or their circumstances, and the actual playing of the game was too slow and dull to bother continuing. I am genuinely confused why this received nearly universal acclaim - although beautiful, it is incredibly tedious and one-dimensional. Expand

Every time I want to do anything it's a 10 minute minimum horse ride to get somewhere. Then I have to brush my horse because he got dirty and dirty horses' stamina refills slower, feed the horse because it needs to regain health because the auto pilot (there's horse auto pilot) tripped over something and injured it, then find a place to hitch the horse or not hitch it and send it off to safety depending on what I think might happen to it. The actual gameplay, not counting horse maintenance, is a minute or so of stuff happening, usually with a rigid scripted outcome that you're given no choice over, and then back to primping and riding your horse. The multi-player campaign relies to much on a gaming community that for the lack of better words just sucks. The game had real potential but it got lost in translation from concept to reality. The multi-billion dollar business has no obligation to provide valid evidence for something so permanent as a PERMAMENT SUSPENSION FROM ACCESSING ANY OF YOUR PAID FOR CONTENT ON THEIR SYSTEM?!?! The thing is...you CANT leave any real hateful comments and cuss words in reviews or XBOX doesn't even even save them, just blanks it out like you didn't type anything at all. So the suspension is complete BS, groups of circle jerks can get together and report something you typed as offensive and it auto-bans you and some lame gamer on a power-trip volunteering for their "ambassador" program (more circle jerks with fragile egos) reviews the ban and appeal. Boycott Xbox, they don't deserve your money with their "woke" parenting of even the lamest of things like GAME REVIEWS. So much so that I know Red Dead Redemption 2 coming up in a few months, wont live up to its older sibling in terms of old gamers familar with this series. This was back when "DLC" wasnt being chopped from the main game to be sold later, and once that trend started, games have been shallow and too short, for "full" experiences to be sold to you later for more $$.
