Some of the bigger bosses are fun to take down, and the grim backgrounds are often quite pretty, but robotically pounding or charging the X button for hours on end will wear down the will-power of even the most stalwart gamers. [May 2011, p.71]
  2. Stylistically bland and clearly confused, the game's initially slick descent quickly twists into a belly flop. Floundering in a mush in ill-advised ideas, Moon Diver drowns itself in a paddling pool of tedium.

The only way to experience the whole game with relative ease is by dipping your toes in the online pool. Unfortunately, most of the title is plagued by repetition, lifeless design, and enough Japanese obscurity to deter most enthusiasts, meaning Moon Diver's appeal is broken quicker than Ryan Giggs' super injunction.

Moon Diver has many flaws: poor gameplay, an absent narration, an unbalnced difficulty level. More than enough to stay away from it.

This game is a complete mess from start to finish.

A lackluster side-scrolling action game with boring graphics, tedious combat and shoddy interface design. Boss fights are ocassionally interesting, but it's not enough to change the overall impression of a game not worth your time.

Moon Diver simply can't compete with recent entries like Outland, Vampire Smile, or Hard Corps: Uprising. Although fundamentally similar, those games offer much more variety and dynamic gameplay that combine retro and modern sensibilities to far greater effect. I would have loved to have seen Mr. Yotsui come forward with a game at least as good as Strider, which was one of the best action games of the 16-bit era, but this title feels more like one of the also-rans from that period that no one remembers or plays any longer. I suspect that it won't be very long before those descriptors can be applied to this miserable game.
