I played through the first one multiple times, getting every achievement and secret possible. And after playing Dead Space 2, I plan on doing it again. Let me start with what I feel should be icing on the cake, which is the multiplayer. Obviously, you should not purchase DS2 just for the multiplayer, as you will most likely feel a little disappointed for spending so much on an online game that is really not too complex at all. Now, by no means is that saying that the multiplayer is bad, because it's quite the opposite. Being either the humans or necromorphs is extremely addicting (I don't know why), but I will add that I feel the humans are still a little bit overpowered. However, the combat is extremely brutal and intense, and the pace rarely lets up, hardly giving you time to breathe after several enemy pack players just tried to maul you. For me, I think it's great since I loved dismembering necromorphs offline so much. Being the necromorphs is a ton of fun, being able to spawn from just about anywhere to ambush the enemy human players. The level up system is pretty straightforward, with the higher level you get, the more things you unlock, such as new abilities, armor, weapons, or upgrades. The maps in my opinion are pretty decent and get the job done, but a few of them tend to be a bit bland. Since the action is constantly so intense, you hardly have time to notice. Overall, a great addition to the game and I feel that it should be kept for Dead Space 3 as well with a few tweaks. Now, the meat and potatoes, the single player. This is where this game really shines, bringing the survival horror genre a new meaning. From the very beginning of the game, you're immediately thrust into intense sequences and horrific scenes. When you wake up in the straight jacket right in the middle of fray (I won't try and spoil anything), you realize from that moment on just how insane the game is going to be. I feel that this one is scarier than the first one, as I didn't feel the first one was too scary. This one is basically guaranteed to make you jump several times, and the dementia that Isaac faces gets pretty creepy at time. I played the game two hours straight when I picked it up, and the entire time my heart was pulsing. The difficulty, even on normal, is much harder this time around, and I found myself raging a few times at parts that took huge tolls on your supplies (ammo, health, etc.). The pacing of the game is fantastic, letting up every so often to let your heart rate return to normal, before thrusting you right back into frantic battle for survival. The storyline is great, voice acting is awesome, and the graphics are much improved. The lighting is a ton better, putting you through pitch-black rooms very often and changing it up to environments such as apartments or an elementary school (one of my favorite areas). The sound is also improved, ranging from the clanging of metal objects falling, all the way up to the screaming and grunting of lurking necromorphs waiting to pounce of you. The guns are all back as well as some additional firepower for your arsenal. The melee is tremendously improved, which was a huge relief for me, since I felt that the curbstomp from the first one was basically useless later on in the game. Overall, an amazing game that doesn't let any of its flaws outshine its brilliance. If you're a fan of sci-fi, shooters, survival horror, or anything in between, than it would be a travesty for you to not pick up this game. Highly recommended. Expand

Great visuals, amazing sound, and tons of atmosphere. Plus, it's really fun shootin' the crap of the necromorphs. A definite step above the first game.

Pretty much an improvement in almost every aspect over the first Dead Space. With that long list in mind, I did, however, say the sequel is better in ALMOST every way. I felt the scares this time around were more cliche'. Where as in the first game, my heart was racing and nothing way even popping out, just the environment itself was terrifying. It seems the scares are just monsters popping out of closets, ceilings, panels etc. I also didn't care for the mission design this time around. I felt the first games missions were designed better, where as 2, it's just A to B over and over and over. However, the Pros FAR FAR out way the Cons, so pick this one up, whether you played the first or not, it's an awesome game and every fan of video games should experience it. Expand

9.5/10 = Incredible = The best survival horror game is resident evil 4, but this is a very close second. It fuses action with horror so perfectly that I couldn't stop playing. This game actually got the better of me at times. Terrible online component unfortunately.

Next the number of suits and the look of them. they are somewhat pretty kool but i was expecting more suits and a little more customization on color. and i personally thought they werent that much cooler than the first game. Next the number of bosses. i didnt think it would be too important but there were not many bosses in this one and i would of liked some sure there are some minor ones but none that made me ahhh like the last boss in the first game. and on the sense of the scare factor the only thing is in number one u were pretty much alone and u were in small spaces. i expected them to add some large spaces but it all seems to large and it lost some scare. on to the good. Detail, absolutely amazing simply awesome. they outdid themselves with the level of detail. the detail itself told its own story. next is the game play guns are fun but what really got me into it was the epic moments it had were therewas just so much going on from being blown up into space from some of the interactions with other characters but mainly he psychological factor. Issac in this game is insane and has constant visions witch i loved. the constant fight with himselve brought me into the game. so much so that i played the story a whole 3 times.and the random visions will make u jump and the game isnt just shooting there are some puzzles which the game even better. and lastly the gore i love gore and this game didnt dissapoint with that so much blood and limns and i loved it overall this game was a great fallow up and is ultimately i think better than the first one and is one of my favorite games it is the best horror game franchise. definitely recommend this. the goods out weigh the faults. The game is much different than the first game in terms of pacing and exploration as it drops the exploration / explanation parts of dead space 1 in exchange for more linear action based gameplay. There are many more enemies than in the first game and more variations of mini boss monsters, many of the new enemies shoot projectiles which adds another level of challenge to the gameplay. There are new weapons that make this easier but you will find that the weapons from the first game are still the best and the new weapons are mainly a novelty. Ammo is in short supply like before, you will spend a lot of time stomping corpses for additional ammo and credits and many of the weapons and equipment upgrades require more power nodes than before but you have the option to remove all nodes and start over if you want which is great.

Be ready for some cheap deaths because the game has very little visual cues and no hud just like the first one. In addition there is no line between where a cutscene begins and ends so it's best to just assume that at some point during a cut scene you will be able to control the main character again even if 2 seconds before you could not because 2 seconds afterwards you will be dead. Aside from that you will be in for a treat as this game is rock solid in both gameplay, and even paced with action scenes generally followed by some exploration and a few places of refuge where you can restock and reload before the cycle starts again. The flaws in this game are minor and wont apply if you've never played the first game. Enemies tend to jump out of where you expect them to and after an hour or two you'll be trained to scope out a room for vents before you enter it, depending on your play style you can almost see the invisible event triggers before they happen much like the plot's "twists" which were textbook and is why I gave it a 9. As great as this game is in presentation, sound, graphics, and gameplay, the story just wasnt as complex or interesting as the first, but the rest of it makes up for that. On a side note, as these games become more mature the stories should as well, hopefully they'll figure that last part out in dead space 3 :-D

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The reviews from **** and critical_strike are far from truth, plain and simple. saying that Issac "unquestioningly" and "constantly" follows direction is false, as within the first moments of speaking to the initial person trying to "help" him after the run through the beggining of the game in the straight jacket, he's almost immediately questioning her and telling her he doesn't need her help. the need for different types of guns for different types of enemies is a farce, as anyone who's played through the first game knows the plasma cutter works right through to the end just fine without using any of the other weapons offered. I'm amused in how the Unitologist is called a "crazy religious woman" when she never belies that state once in the game, only a mild notion of it before she gets splattered all over the wall with her buddies. 4 crappy outfits? have you bothered to play through to the new difficulties in the game, critical_strike? are you actually trying to tell me that the advanced suit looks like crap? this person must be using a sub-par television, as the final suit in the first play through is sick to view. and as I have started a new game with the weapons and suits from the first play, the first new suit is the riot security suit, which IMO is sick as hell. so when you write a review, people, at least do it with some semblance of knowing the facts and not just write because they didn't make the game how YOU wanted it.

the story is solid, amusing at specific points and doesn't in the least sound like anything that these jaded reviews are pointing out. the puzzles are original, and when I mean original, I mean that in the 20 plus years of gaming that I have been through, I have not seen anything like them, other than that hacking puzzles which remind me of the hacking puzzles in Batman Arkham Asylum.

the biggest improvement overall, is the brilliant change in the way the gravity free portions of the game have been implimented, as you are no longer constrained to jumping from floor to wall to wall to floor. you are now free to roam EVERYWHERE when there is no gravity, which puts the ability to feel like you are "truly" weightless and free to go around everywhere without restriction, even as when you're trying to align the solar panels, I almost tried to see how far I could go from the station, but I stopped myself. the only drawback to this, and I think it just puts more realism into the game, is the possible nausea you may feel while roaming around weightless as the screen doesn't stay level. totally badass beyond explanation, you just have to see it for yourself

the only real criticism I have is this, and that is during the final confrontation. I was able to, within SECONDS, figure out what I needed to do, and that is seriously disappointing!! I mean, being able to finish the end "boss", if you can call it that, was completed in less than 3 minutes!! horrible!!!

I give it a 9. the graphics are badass, audio is insane, reply value is INSANE, if you loved the first one and didn't expect much to change or want it to, BUY THIS GAME NOW!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked this game very much, though not as frightening as the first game Dead Space 2 still has its moments. However the multi-player seems lacking, in that most of the modes are very similar. The new Necromorphs the guys over at Visceral came up with are more disturbing than ever. For example The Stalker, a creature that seems to be composed of animal parts that hunts in packs, communicating very much like the raptors from Jurassic Park, they also take advantage of when you reload or turn your back to charge and knock you over. So even though the multi-player will probably get old faster than I would like, this game will keep me coming back to its campaign for months. Expand

Dead Space 2 goes over the top with Horror-Shooters! The game has a fantastic single player storyline and the visuals are outstanding. The first installment of the game was a mere fragment of the blood, gore, and gruesome excitement of the second. If you liked the first game you will, without a doubt, love the second. Don't just take my word for it, all you gotta do is watch the trailer.

It uses these ideas to great effect and draws the player in to Isaac's demented trip to the truth. All in all the single player campaign is excellent and needs little polish besides less paying for suits. On the other hand the multiplayer featured by Dead Space 2 needs much more to be finished. It is almost in a beta state and lacks many more features offered in other multiplayer games today. Its experience system is strict and offers no bonuses for doing extraordinary actions like completing all objectives with lots of time to spare, or on the other side stopping the humans from capturing or completing objectives and forcing an early defeat. Also there needs to be all weapons featured in single player to be present in multiplayer not to mention all forms of necromorphs. The premise of the game is excellent and is interesting in its own right but its needs more of everything that was shown to you in the single player game. As a last note they need to offer more maps as DLC seeing as those that like this game will continue to support it and purchase anything featured for it that will expand upon its universe. But of all things, the design has been improved by far the most. I still can't call the game scary, but it certainly tries far harder to be then the first game. The audio is beautifully executed, with close and ambient sounds constantly making you guess at what's at the next encounter. The graphics have a slight improvement, and it shows with the sight of enemies, which seem far more nightmarish looking . The setting for the game also helps. Set in The Sprawl, a city on one of Saturn's moons, the game feels far larger in scope then its predecessor and gives the experience and overall grander feel. In the run up to my Dead Space 2 copy arriving I was playing Dead Space 1 which turned out to be a bad idea because the slight change in controls made me either quick heal myself when I didn't want to or when I wanted to reload nothing would happen, damn button changes! When I look down the reviews I can't help but laugh at the flaws I see in the low scoring reviews such as one person saying that, 'In Dead Space one at least you get 6 cool suits and in Dead Space 2, 4 crappy suits,' what he fails to realize is that 4 of the suits on Dead Space 1 are just a variation of the first one and the 6th one just made you look like a Combine Elite from Half-Life which really didn't fit the mood, although I have to agree that the suits from Dead Space 1, minus the Combine Elite Suit, was cooler than any of the suits from Dead Space 2 but I'm not so stuck in the past that I cry about it. Also when they complain about Dead Space 1 being scarier than Dead Space 2 and therefore Dead Space 2 is immediately crap, Dead Space 1 was scarier but in the end Dead Space games just aren't that scary overall, and besides, I play Dead Space for the gameplay and the story not the scare factor, the odd jump here and there is fun though. Lastly all the low reviewers say that the story made no sense, seen as they all seem like the person who I have quoted it makes perfect sense, they're all brain dead from playing too much Dead Space 1, maybe if they finally left the Ishimura then they could see some brain functions finally return to them. With my hating of the haters over I will now mention the multiplayer, a Left 4 Dead styled multiplayer where you take turns as the infected or a squad of 4 Titan Security Personal, the Security must complete objectives whilst the infected try to kill them. They give you no tutorial to using the infected so you first few games as the infected are mainly spent wondering, 'How did that infected jump on him,' which you eventually figure out and then it's smooth sailing from there on. That's really all I have to say about the multiplayer, I got to into playing the campaign to play much multiplayer. Expand

Most of them claim to have "loved" the first Dead Space and have again claimed that they completed it many times. This is what perplexes me. People who are still humping the living daylights out of the first one should, in theory, love the second Dead Space. I've played the first one through many times and still managed to get scared after the 1st try. So when I got the second, I accomplished a total of 5 playthroughs in a total of 2 months. I was THAT fixated with it.
The gameplay hasn't really changed: you still have mildly clunky controls to give that sense of urgency and panic in sticky situations and you're still required to hack the limbs off Necromorphs. But it's such a joy to play that I can't complain.
The story is pretty interesting provided you pay attention and are a fan of the series. The scares aren't as numerous as the first game but still, they are more subtle and will still cause a few screams here and there (this, being the primary source of complaint, means jack to me. I found it scary), most of the game's tense atmosphere comes from the incredible sound design which is enhanced with any sort of speaker system or headphones.
Also, the addition of giving Isaac a face has brought the narrative on leaps and bounds. And while being a schizophrenic, dementia suffering psycho, Isaac comes across as a likeable protagonist.
However, as good as Dead Space 2's singleplayer mode is with its combo of story, sound and awesome graphics, the multiplayer feels unfinished. It lacks any sort of interesting feature and gives the human side a huge advantage. As many people have said it feels "tacked on" and is nowhere near the high standard the singeplayer set.
I believe those who rated this negatively are gravely mistaken and haven't absorbed themselves into the atmosphere of the game, no matter how much they said they liked the previous game. Dead Space 2 is certainly a sequel that lives up to the hype!

Playing through it the game had me on the edge of my seat the whole night, and I was quite impressed by the games length and I LOVED how the game included 2 discs, so that DLC was like an expansion, and not the other 3rd of the game. The combat didn't get as repetitive as I expected it to get, and I really loved the telekinesis, which not only helped save ammunition but added a change to the game play that was something I am not used to in Survival horror games. In all honesty, I hate non FPS multiplayer games unless it's racing. Even with FPS I prefer them 99% of the time on PC, so the multiplayer didn't appeal to me all that much, however it is fun with it's L4D style gameplay... like L4D, I prefer the non-human team, and it's a hell of a good time.
All in all, even if you don't like Dead Space 2's style of game (non FPS or whatever) this is still a great buy, this is one of those few games, I would recommend to anyone, except my mother, because, yes, there is some really brutal and messed up things in this game...

Originally we're given a story that seems utterly hopeless from start to finish and though the combat is in close quarters (mostly) the idea you were on a gigantic ship and in the middle of space adds to this sense of hopelessness. In the first game we're given a character, Isaac, who has no dialogue and is given only grunts and yells - in this game Isaac actually has a voice and personality. In a way this adds to the story, but it also takes away from the horror. In Dead Space I felt more like I was on board the horrific Ishimura, but in this one, though the gameplay remains extreme and extensively fun, I felt it was like I was watching the experience rather than being a part of it. In this Dead Space we're given an even bigger environment, but it doesn't really feel all that big seeing we only visit small portion of the huge space city. Fewer varieties of enemies are present in this one, and only a few new ones are introduced, but the scares remain there - especially with the newly added Stalkers. This game plays highly off of Isaac's dementia, which I thought was great, and it also adds a new sense of maturity and growth from the first game. The first game was classic and over the top (so is this one) but I feel that the storyline becomes so much clearer in this addition and we're given more to discover than we were in the first game. However the sense of confusion I felt in the first game was partly why it was so terrifying, and when the twist was revealed (in the first game) I was just blown away and even felt chilled. This is a great game, but the overall story mode is surprisingly short. I was able to beat it in one sitting - which is really quick for a two disked game, but also goes to show how captivating it is to get me to sit there for so long. The intensity is so great and the scares are so constant that eventually you may find your mind shutting down and going into a zone where pop outs and eeriness cease to be effective. There is also multiplayer, which is surprisingly fun (especially when you play as the necromorphs). The only issue I've had with multiplayer is the loading time, other than that it's loads of fun, and so is the rest of the game. Expand

This game has much better pacing than the first one and much more diverse areas which made it more interesting to play. Also with ammo made more scarce and a much harder game this game is an even better game than the first one also the longer campaign and more satisfying ending also are in its favor.

The reason it doesn't receive a ten is the multiplayer is horribly unbalanced, I know humans are supposed to be more powerful, but they are overpowered as necromorphs die much more easily than in campaign, and take up to 5x longer to kill a human than a human takes to kill a necromorph. The other reason is it less scary than the first. However definitely worth your time and money. Expand

The atmosphere in the game isn't quite as terrifying as it was in the first one, but they included both new and old necromorphs and focused more on hordes and hordes of necromorphs coming to screw up your world. This Dead Space seems to have more action rather than focusing completely on trying to make you piss your pants. This is a superior game to it's predecessor in every way possible. The most significant improvement is that they gave Isaac a voice. No longer is he the mute protagonist running to and fro playing errand boy for other people; this time he is a living human being, driven by his own personal objectives. This parlays into much more interesting and meaningful missions, as there is now a personal impetus to get through the story. The story and universe are also expanded upon from the first, with lots of interesting backstory delivered in the form of interesting text and audio logs. The gameplay also feels tighter and more polished than the first. Isaac feels more nible and responsive than his past self, which makes for more fluid gameplay. Combat is as frantic as ever, and harder difficulties really challenge the player to use ammo smartly and have good situational awareness. The more action-y gameplay however, has meant alot of the slower paced horror and creepiness of the first game have been left by the wayside. Enemies also seem to have been recycled from the first, and there aren't many unique monsters. Gameplay could have also been spruced up a bit with some new features. As it is, it's the gameplay of old, but much more polished. There are alot of standout "set piece" sequences, similar to the Uncharted series. One involving a monster chasing Isaac, with the camera peering over Isaac's front, is an ingeniously crafted action sequence. The graphics, audio, and artwork are also well executed. There is an incredible sense of time and place. You really believe this far-future sci fi world exists, even though it doesn't. All in all, a great sequel, pick it up. Expand

The story in the first Dead Space was great, but it wasn't interesting, there was no meaning. The developers clearly focused on the scare factor and the survival aspect of the game. This time around, the developers knew they could not get us with the same scares, so they ramped up the story. They made far more interesting characters this time around as well. Isaac Clarke had a voice, and I actually cared what happened to him. I wanted Nolan Stross to overcome his dementia. I wanted Ellie to survive. I even started to empathize with Hans Tiedemann, the games secondary antagonist. Isaac's Dementia, though not very scary, showed us that he was broken man, deep inside his killer instincts of survival. The game was extremely linear, but we rarely saw the same exact areas twice, unlike the first game, which no one seems to criticize for revisiting 3 of the Ishimura's decks twice. Speaking of the U.S.G Ishimura, what a fantastic section of the game. Though I was not in any way terrified like the first game, I had an inexplicable feeling of tension through the chapter. Although it has swayed towards an action-shooter and away from survival horror, I believe it only makes the game stronger as reusing the same tactics from the first game would have made this game stale. Games need to evolve, to grow, to succeed the installment before it, to match the quality of the first and surpass it. What a great game. Expand

Tension, stress and the accompanying ubiquitous fear begin in the first minute of the game, and with an intense finale they last until the very end of the game.
Emotions, emotions and more emotions. This noun describes how you feel while playing Dead Space 2. At the same time, this dose of emotions is a truly destructive mixture. Anxiety, fear, hate, stress, a sense of hopelessness, constant struggle and harassment are just a few epithets among the whole lot. Chapter by chapter through the eyes of Isaac Clarke, we watch the Titan Space Station plunging into ever greater chaos. And it becomes a feast for the senses and a challenge for our adrenal glands.
The audio-visual setting once again stands on a high level, exemplary for all horror movies. It is brutal, bloody, detailed and ghastly. The enemy models are terrifying. One of the most disgusting, hideous creatures in the history of video games. Almost everyone attacks our protagonist with a piercing roar. Playing on a high level of difficulty is not a challenge, it is well-balanced, but each encounter with a series of opponents requires a large percentage of your focus and reflexes to get out of the fight unscathed.
The plot is a direct continuation of the first part and is divided into 15 different chapters that will not let the player get bored. Thanks to the audio files scattered here and there, we get to know the macabre history of the station members by delving into more and more turmoil.
In Dead Space 2, we get more of everything. And the symbolic return to the decontaminated USG vessel Ishimura - to the place where it all began - is an additional plus for the game.
It is difficult for me to say whether I can recommend this title, because it is not a production for everyone. What more sensitive people will not be able to get through the real cosmic horrendum. However, for people with strong nerves and a strong psyche, the game will be an iconic work.
    A nightmarish revelation.

    A LOVELY SPACEWALK AMONG NECROMORPHS

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
The game has been completed multiple times and in all difficulty levels present, as well, the platinum trophy has been achieved. It has also been tested at both 30 fps and 60 fps.

    EXTRACTION:
Unlike its predecessor, Dead Space 2 throws the player immediately into the middle of the action. In the first few minutes of the game, the story of the original is briefly hinted at with a nice cutscene following that brings up the beautiful necromorphs that clearly begin to slaughter anyone breathing inside the facility. Clearly, as is the first chapter, a chasing sequence will begin from which the player must escape unharmed, or nearly so, and then learn the game's first basic mechanics useful for mere survival. These are brilliantly placed in rapid sequence, making their learning and combined use, much more intuitive.

    FLYING THROUGH THE SPACE:
The gameplay of the game, as an excellent sequel to an already established still excellent game should do, brings back all those mechanics already present in the original, adding, as one would expect, new weapons, enemies and puzzles. The fluidity of movement has been greatly improved, making both dodging enemies, and catching them, from enemies, faster and smoother (Small note to Xbox Game Pass and PC, which make with 60 fps gameplay borderline to modern gaming). One of the big differences is the improvement of the Zero-G system, now adjusted for smoother and less restricted free movement, and consequently the addition of combat sequences and puzzles appropriate to the new mechanics.
The presence of new weapons of course is not to be ruled out, including the Javelin, a powerful spear-shooter capable of piercing enemies and then detonating them; the Seeker rifle, a high-caliber sniper rifle; the force gun, useful for throwing enemies against walls and keeping them well away and the Detonator, a simple grenade launcher. The game then has several difficulty levels as in its predecessor, including the infamous Hardcore Mode, which, however, will now be tied to a maximum of 3 possible saves for the player, making it a great challenge for any player. The reward for this feat will be the world-famous Pew Pew gun, also known as Devil's Horns or Hand Cannon, a baseball cheer mitt capable of one-shotting virtually any creature in the Dead Space world. The new enemies are many, and they go to highlight everything that might have been missing on Dead Space.

    THE SUN NEVER SHINES:
Visually Dead Space 2 also comes across as more arrogant than the original. By not being tied to a single spaceship design, the designers had much more field in which to express their talents, creating huge space cities, moon bases, deep space flight sections, and even a few goodies for those who played the original. The graphics turn out great for the year of release, and because of that it has managed not to age. Let alone the wonderful designs of the new weapons, characters, and enemies, which always look impeccable.

    SUFFOCATING SILENCE:
Everything that is already present in Dead Space 1 applies here. To make a long story short, the audio is always perfectly dedicated to what it's supposed to achieve, whether it's the suffocating silence of space, or the swarming noises of necromorphs in the ducts, or the heartbreaking screams of dying commoners, Dead Space 2 always gets it right, setting the atmosphere that every horror game should have.

    BUT WHY 9?

    PROS:
Dead Space 2 is the sequel in every way to its predecessor. Valueting the original an 8, cannot help but getting the sequel a 9, improving on or maintaining virtually all of the merits and eliminating most of the flaws. The gameplay is still fun even after multiple runs, even just dismembering necromorph bodies is highly addictive. The story is a continuation of the first, and it is much more extensive, explaining facts unknown in the first and giving the basis for the third. Objectively Dead Space 2 is a great game in the Horror genre and an expansion of the already established first Dead Space.

    CONS:
The path toward Action. This is what you feel when playing Dead Space 2, that middle ground between a true horror and a third-person action shooter. Obviously for those who have played the third chapter it will be clear why, it bridges the two genres. This is obviously a flaw that , however extreme, led to the downfall of the third chapter, and the subsequent closure of the development team, Visceral Games. Also, a second flaw, the game turns out, because of its size and setting, to be much more alive. This might be a pro for some, but in a horror game where the loneliness of the space is the focal point it goes to take away that side of eeriness that the first one had.

Sequel to Resident Evil: The Next Generation with a larger play area, more elaborate missions, optional side missions and some cool new weapons and upgrades. On occasion combat can be a little frustratingly tricky, but otherwise a beautifully designed, atmospheric and creepy survival horror in space.

Dead Space 2 is a sequel while it is not as good as the first one, the fact that Visceral Games has understand that they can make some fantastic games, even if the sequel isn’t as good as DS1. Great gameplay, Isaac now has a voice, an intriguing story, fun mechanics, and overall, it’s a nice game that improves upon the original in a lot of ways. I’m giving it a 9.5 out of 10.

The decision to give Isaac Clarke (the protagonist) a voice was an excellent design choice and allows the player to gain a likeness of the character. The surroundings and sound are both superb; the original was fantastically atmospheric, but this game improves and refines everything. As a rental (or as second hand) you will not get an 'online code' and so this locks away the online multi-player, which is disappointing, however the single player 9-10 hour play through way enough to satisfy me. 4/5, superb. Pretty good game but doesnt feature much change from the first game. One of the big set backs for the game is that is lacks variety and it really feels you are just replaying the same parts over and over again. Besides that, Its pretty enjoyable and I had a blast playing it.

Now, what made me love DS1 was exactly that, as a seasoned horror fan, it's very hard to find something to gave me real shivers, be it in movies or games. And DS1 delivered, as no movie or game in recent memory could do - maybe with the exception of Silent Hill 2.

Yes, there were recycled levels, and yes, they ripped off lots of stuff from other games. But, as Picasso reportedly said, the mediocre artist copies, the great artist steals. Critics called DS1 "unoriginal", but that's missing the point completely. It was worthy not because the script, storytelling or game mechanics (despite dismemberment being original). It was worthy for achieving a overwhelmingly macabre feel that no one on cinema, lest gaming industry, today manage to achieve. Dead Space 2 is just not scary. I played it on the level above normal, got killed a lot of times. Still, I couldn't feel that impressing sensation of imminent danger that made DS1 into the game I loved. Some critics talked about the jump from Alien to Aliens, Ridley Scott to David Big Cheese Cameron. So, it's like having your favorite cult movie being re-shot in a generic commercial way by a Hollywood studio - or, more specifically, a Hollywood studio accidentally releasing a masterpiece and "correcting" it later.

Now, DS2 has its merits as a game. Combat is still very satisfying, the script is a lot less generic, with Isaac turning into a person with his own will, not a generic vessel of suffering. It deserves the 7 I'm giving for those merits, and for that I'm excluding my comparison with DS1. Fortunately, it's not easier than DS1, maybe harder. On the down side, it's too linear - I really don't see the point of critics in hailing that as an advantage. Worse still, one of the new monsters, the stalker, caught my attention as a symptom of dumbification - it's supposed to hide at corners to suprise-attack you, but it actually sticks its head from the corners so you can peek it every time before it predictably charging head-on for you to cut his legs. The stalker actually playing peek-a-boo with you - I suppose that's adequate for the public they had in mind.

Maybe it's not the developers' fault or executive meddling, maybe they set the bar too high, or it's just impossible for one to get the same scare twice - see Silent Hill after 2. Still, I'd wait for the price go down a little before acquiring it, not expecting it to be Dead Space, but just a competent monster shooter, a little soulless, but funny still.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The pro's are actually right for a change, this is a GREAT game. If you like horror games, which I do. However, before I say whats great about it, I feel like I have to point out that this game is not an instant classic because it does have its flaws. But it would be hard to attack the game for these flaws without attacking the conventions of its genre or the limitations of the technology which was used to make it.

Dead Space 2 is still very much a horror game and as such succumbs to the limitations that have been a staple of the genre ever since the early days of the T-Virus. For some reason, developers are still confusing tank-like controls and sneak attacks for tension and suspense. Your characters sprint is a brisk jog at best and your melee attack still consists solely of wildly flailing your arms while grunting. (Sadly the Plasma Saw from Dead Space: Downfall was not featured in this game.) So your defensive measures are still pretty much limited to your ammo reserves. There aren't many new weapons and your combat proceeds very much like the last game. When you enter a long hallway, either zombies will come sprinting at you from the other end or come bursting out of previously locked doors, resulting in the "boo" scare followed by a few moments of panic as you mash on your fire-button to blow the limbs off the monsters until money, ammo, or a health pack bursts from their corpse. When you enter a large open space, you simply walk or run forward until you spring the trap and are ambushed by a swarm of no more than 6 or so enemies. Shoot, run, collect items, repeat.

And while this is no fault of the developers, a much bigger game is promised but unfortunately cannot be delivered on. When looking out a window you see what looks like a frame from Blade Runner of a huge sprawling metropolis but most of the game is you simply spending about an hour running around a huge building or labyrinth before riding a tram or getting blown out a window to your next destination. By the time I popped in the second disc, I was completely lost on what Isaac was trying to accomplish. or where he was supposed to be going. And for your character being an engineer, your engineering is pretty much limited to insert Object A into Slot B to open Door C. Games like Bioshock have experimented with utilizing hacking to have control over your environment, why couldn't this one? While the hacking mini-game in this is a quicker, more convenient method than in Bioshock, its all done purely to open a door or restore power to an elevator. Yawn.

But what I can say is that this game still succeeds leaps and bounds beyond its predecessor and most other games in the genre. This is by far the most linear and cinematic game I have ever played. While the dialogue is still laughable and cliched and the motivations and logic of both protagonists and antagonists questionable in the extreme, the game never once takes you out of the experience of playing it. While most games still rely on chapters and cut scenes to load the next sequence, Dead Space 2 never once breaks for a moment, instead being so much more about the journey and less about the destination. (Which does lead to the final boss battle being surprisingly underwhelming, but more on that in a minute.) The game jettisons the constant backtracking and end-chapter load screens in favor of creating a truly interactive movie experience.

The graphics are amazing, down to every last detail. The zombies are even slimier and more menacing, the blood and viscera more plentiful, and your character's suits don't just get tougher as the game progresses, they vary so much in style and function that no doubt players will be able to find a favorite to call their own. Although the game does still rely on many jump-scares, there are parts that are so nerve-wracking they must be played to be believed. The story doesn't really answer many questions from the last game. There is still no answer as to where the Marker came from or why these Scientology-clones can't seem to learn that their religious artifact is basically a zombie-factory, but this I'm sure is all just for the inevitable Dead Space 3. Which if I can offer any suggestions to EA for the next game, is don't hold back. The outer-space setting offers so many different ways for ripping zombies to pieces that I felt there were things int the game that could have been done but weren't. For the next game, let us take a Plasma Saw to our enemies. Give us an honest-to-goodness shotgun to go all Ash on them. Let us pilot a gunship to rain hell down on a horde of monsters. As long we're ripping off the Alien films, give us a Power Loader to take on a Mega-Brute. Let us use the Solar Beam to burn down another Hive Mind. Hell, introduce another alien race to fight in addition to the zombies. Up the ante and the body count and I'll be back for more...

Compared to the original, Dead Space 2 is an improvement across the board. The horror in the first game was seriously lacking and though it hasn't changed much in the second game, the larger focus on action held my interest. Isaac has a voice this time around but nothing about his personality rises above "default video game hero". He says and does what we expect he would do, making him merely adequate. The dementia scenes are a nice touch to the game though they don't add much. The gameplay is largely the same as its predecessor except with a few new necromorphs and weapons. This isn't a bad thing considering that the gameplay was the best thing about the first game. Zero gravity scenarios are vastly improved as are the cinematic action sequences. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's surely difficult for a game with the success that the original Dead Space had upon it's release to improve upon itself whilst adding to what has gone before with it's sequel. Dead Space 2 does just that.

The game itself has many stand out moments and set pieces, down to the very way in which Isaac recovers his equipment from the last game, something that could easily have been more pedestrian in a lesser game and would have gone unconsidered/unnoticed. Overall, well thought out and great fun.

After picking it up the other week I realized that what I hated the first time was really the beauty in the game. I played for and hour or so and was hooked. The feeling of tension that this game creates is on a whole other level from other games I have played. Every corner you feel forced to check left and right -- with that visibility you have -- to avoid being snuck up on by a zombie. Hearing a something in the walls and just knowing that something is coming and tensing up on the edge of the couch to just find yourself at a save station is probably the quickest jump in my suspense that I have ever felt in a game. Overall I think this games ability to draw you in with the suspense is what made this a great game. I will say this though: dying was more frustrating than a set back, and the save stations seemed useless and too frequent. I don't really mind the latter, but dying felt like **** I have to go blow through this section again" rather than "Okay **** how I am going to beat these guys". I didn't really understand a lot of the story going through the game either; it was only the end when everything was put before you that I understood what was going on. Ultimately, I am pleased I picked it up, and I would recommend it to most everyone. Expand

While the horror is no longer there and more action oriented, the game's combat and mechanics improve and are tweaked that overshadows the original and delivers far more thrilling situations. Isaac melees much faster with swings and stomps and his stasis is nerfed from the first game with a rechargeable batter to prevent overuse that the first game had. Kinesis is hugely improved on with enemies being able to stick to walls and use sharp objects to impale them. It was a great idea and it still works really well compared to most games.

The atmosphere is still great but perhaps not as well designed as the Ishimura (which they also bring in this and still nails it). Don't get me wrong, Titan Sprawl is still a great location with a civilian space metropolis, but the concise and mundane of the ship just sat better for me.

The story is far different than the first, but it has a few issues that start to incorporate the lore and mystery of the game and take it directions that im unsure of. The Church of Unitology is flaunted far more in this than the first and seeing the lore become more of the plot is very odd to me. There is an idea that Isaac is trying to just escape like before, but also it deals with the death of his girlfriend and fighting the insanity that plaques him when he touches the Marker in the first game. The mind games and scenes with Nicole I really like and her boss confrontation is well done considering enemies are around to supply players with ammo that the Leviathan and Hive Mind couldn't.

The new enemies, death scenes, weapons and environmental effects range from good to fantastic.
While the enemy variety wasn't lacking in the first game, the mix around and new enemies in 2 spice up the formula without being to out of its comfort zone. It makes sense too because it's in a civilian area rather than a scientist one, so the pack being children and stalkers being dogs and animals makes sense and change up tactics. the death scenes, like the elevator ride up fighting tripods under a oxygen tank is outstanding, and the challenge to it is a rare moment of the game being intense and adrenaline based more than any other time in the series for me. The decompression windows are visually great, watching Necromorphs claw and hold onto something as they are flung into the vacuum of space while forcing Isaac to shoot the emergency core to bring down the safety lock is satisfying and able to compromise with the player.

Isaac getting a voice was good I would say. His personality is likable and he doesn't talk too much that makes him overbearing. I'd say Gunner Wright's voice work was solid and Isaac was just fine for me to hear. The zero-g movement is vastly improved from the first game and Isaac controls his entire movement. It can be a bit disorienting though, so its a tradeoff that im more conflicted with but overall still works well.

The DLC Severed and multiplayer is what brings this entire experience down. Had the time of those two things were spent on the single player (which itself is equally as good as the first for what it gains and loses). Severed is a terribly short campaign of a forgettable protagonist that ends before it even builds any tension or character development. I believe it's suppose to be link to a Wii game of Dead Space, but it was a rail shooter that wasn't well received. Considering Dead Space is a cult game series, so having even greater moments and money spent on the inner main game can really go a long way.

The multiplayer was cool concept, but completely screwed and unbalanced on a multitude of problems. A Left 4 Dead style of 4v4 with human and necromorph players fighting in objective modes can be asinine when the host leaves and voids all experience for players that were winning. Weapons are incredibly imbalanced, and certain Necromorph abilities can be abused to no end. It's no wonder the sequel didn't do one. Despite that though, I often found it to be a guilty pleasure, because carving through teams on either side with friends was really fun and great, even if it was at the expense of someone's frustration.

Dead Space 2 is still great for its campaign. Despite the changes to its formula and poor inclusions to try to be more of a target for the mainstream, the game excels above alot of sci-fi games, but not to the standards its previous set. Play it's story and have a blast, trust me it really is worth it.

And finally a common complaint about dead space 2 is that its a lot less scary than the fist. And I do agree on that a little bit but I think that the real issue stems from the difficulty. Where normal mode is just to easy while hard is just a little to stingy with the supplies. Now that could be me but when I played in hard mode the game felt a lot more scary than it would of been other wise. But its hard to recommend that you first play on hard mode because the later parts of the game can get real difficult with what feels like no supplies at points. While the normal mode just gives you way to much ammo and health. I think over all the game is still great it defiantly deserves the must play status and if you've played it yet then you should fix that. Expand

A worthy successor to the first game. Sure, Isaac handles like a truck and there's something just not quite right with his movement controls, but the horror is there in spades and the BEST weapon in video game history (my beloved plasma cutter). A quick word about difficulty. I played it on easy mode and regrettably, I think that was a big mistake. Much of the first game's horror is there in abundance but (on easy mode), the stakes were not that high because failure was pretty much only down to some of the short, confusing environmental cut scenes.

Other wise you get few weapons, ability to send enemies to space and able to throw spiky objects to them. The multiplayer is also awful. Playing as necromorphs isin't fun, because human team can abuse slo-mo ability all the time and the combat feels stupid and boring. The unlocks also feel useless. I recommend this game only for the single player, which is short too (Only about 6-8 hours). Pros:
    + Graphics
+ Single player's action is great, especially during some scenes
    Cons:
    - Multiplayer
    - Doesn't add enough new stuff to single player

I feel like the developers really listened to the criticism that fans gave of the first game, improving a lot of the mechanics. What I feel they lacked in this sequel was staying true to the roots of the first game that made it scary in the first place. Dark, cramped areas with little room to run away from the scary creatures, with very limited ammo. I'm sure there are gamers out there that complained about the lack of decor in the first game, but now that they have it on this giant space station, are they satisfied with the result? Did it really make them more fearful and cringe at the thought of another necromorph right around the corner ready to pop out? Who knows. Maybe they can get the recipe right for the third... Expand

Unfortunately the excellent puzzle solving elements which formed an integral part of the first Dead Space is very much lacking in Dead space 2 and has been replaced by more difficult combat situations which seem take periodic cheap shots at the player and can easily frustrate. However, it is still an enjoyable game and worth playing.

Not a huge difference to the first game however the poor gameplay that cropped up from time to time in the first game have been improved and some new creatures have added to the challenge although the expect the unexpected factor of the first game has been lost. Good graphics, a good storyline and decent gameplay make this well worth a playthrough.

I thought Dead Space 2 was a pretty good sequel but some parts do get a bit tedious and repetitive. This had allot more surprises and scares than the first as with the first it kinda felt predictable and obvious where the monsters where gonna jump out. Dead Space 2 retains much of the positives of the original. Its graphics and audio are good, gameplay works and it often has good athmosphere. There are some nice jump scares, exciting fights and good set pieces (Bird tower, train, Isaac's hallucinations) and the new thruster pack is great.

Nevertheless DS2 falls short compared to the original. DS2 is shorter despite being on 2 DVDs.

Nevertheless DS2 falls short compared to the original. DS2 is shorter despite being on 2 DVDs. Moreover there's very little plot involved, Isaac is asked to move to his objective where, after some hasty 5 second scene, he is instantly shoved towards the next one. The sense of progression was superior in Dead Space 1. There every action mattered, but here Isaac rushes from meaningless scene to another. There are some villains and allies, none of which seem to have any significance. The game seems drawn out and padded, having a sizable bit set on revisiting Ishimura without proper reason just makes the impression worse.

Additionally the new locale is very unimpressive compared to derelict Ishimura from DS1. Titan was supposedly a populated place, but that doesn't show. Isaac is pretty much the only one alive and he really starts to feel like a some sort of superhero. The chance to use other survivors and horror of the outbreak is wasted. Storywise I also found it odd how necromorps actually have their defenders, in DS1 I was able to shrug it off by thinking Marker must affect people and make them mad, but here I don't see why anyone would think they're a good thing. The story hints that there will be a lot more Markers and necromorphs which seems absolutely ridicilous to me. Beating a dead horse and all that.

Gameplaywise there isn't much to complain about. The game is still fun and exciting, though I'm a bit dissapointed how fast-paced and exhausting the series got. Isaac wanders around the station killing hundreds of monsters and there really is no sense of horror here, I rarely had shortage of ammo or health, or oxygen. That is made worse by some of the new aliens: the stalkers preying in the dark behave more comically than fearsomely, and the child enemies are just campy. On a smaller note I feel gore and splatter replaced the last bit of solitary eerie horror DS1 had, everyone dies graphically and the needle part is completely unnecessary. Still, the common necromorphs are some of the best enemies in games, quickly shooting off their claws is always satisfying. Combat feels good and there were some clever intense bits. Despite of the increased pace the game still has good inventory and store systems as well as non-regenerating health and conserving ammo is still important.

Summary: All in all the game is still technically good quality just like Dead Space 1. I wanted to play through it fast and see what happens next. However in the end, looking back, I was left with a sour taste and little hope for the future. DS2 seems rushed and lacking thought, while also suffering from the common actionizing that games are having. I can't see the series continuing and improving, seems like Dead Space 1 was the pinnacle of this series, this generation's Resident Evil 1.

Compared to the first game, Dead Space 2 was somewhat disappointing. It plays more like an action game, relying more on jump scares than atmospheric creepy-ness. They just send horde after horde at you. I much preferr the slow-paced but thrilling game that Dead Space was. Overall though, Dead Space 2 is still an above-average action game.

The Dead Space series is nothing to write home about, its chunky controls, lacklustre graphics and boring campaign virtually leaves you with nothing bare creepy deformed enemies or the odd jump scare. So much potential wasted on what could of been an amazing survival horror game. Another disappointment, would not recommended.

It has lost the whole experience that was Dead Space and is now just a generic on rails space shooter with gore. The new Left 4 Dead monsters unbalance the game so now you have one way to play, back into a corner with as much ammo and health as possible and keep shooting, it has lost all the tension and variation in game play that the original had. If this was just another shooter I'd probably give it a 7 but as it is they have ruined the chance to create a great sequel and with cash in crap like Ignition, an on line pass and DLC announced before the games even released a 5 is generous. As much as I would have like this game to be a perfect 10, and as much as when I was playing it I wanted to say, "This is awesome!!", I have to admit there wasn't much there to make me feel like I thought it was even a decent sequel to Dead Space, which I had rented and returned one week late because I was so obsessed with playing it. There were many core things that I couldn't understand weren't in this "monster of a sequel":
    1) Where are the huge bosses? I don't recall seeing a one. The final boss was just plain annoying, not epic or anything...
    2) Where are the cool repair missions and the complete feeling of being two steps behind all the time, survival seeming impossible..
    3) Where are the cool characters you meet and love but don't trust at all?
    4) WHY OH WHY DOES ISAAC TALK.....WHY???? Him not speaking was half the mystery about the protagonist they had created. They removed all doubt about his character or 'mystery'...this might seem like a small detail but for me this was huge. I found it strange and out of place that he would speak.
    5) The new guns are VERY uncreative...one gun is the same as what you can do with kinesis..but wait....they added a SNIPER RIFLE...? Dead Space was all about creative weapons, and just plain tools you'd see around.
    6) Online feels like it was thrown in just to please all the YouTube whiners who want a multiplayer experience in every single game they play. Why are gamers like that now? What happened to creating a really really good single player experience..? Felt like a ripoff of Left 4 Dead..
    7) The new aliens don't really do anything for me...enough said.
    8) The gore was REALLY upgraded, a sign of making up for shortcomings...aka becoming a typical survival-horror shooter..
    9) Suits were boring and were basically 3 or 4 archetypes and then all that changed were the colours. COME ON...
    10) Game felt repetetive, the hack puzzles were unimaginative and boring, story sucked, and really didn't make sense at all...

Ok so now that I'm dwelling on the negative, I do have some things I think they improved:

    1) They shooting mechanics felt much better, I thought they were and improvement, including the reloading animations especially for the plasma cutter.
    2) It's Dead Space. Enough said...
    3) Hard Core mode looks like I'll never ever beat it...
    4) Graphics were really really good.
    5) Hey, at least they released a sequel

All that being said, the game was alright, there were times when I thought it was pretty good, and times when I felt ripped off. All in all, I give this game a 5 because of the fact that it really didn't live up to Dead Space 1. It's not an innovative addition to the series, it added boring multiplayer and a streamlined single player experience. If you don't get the online pass, don't bother. I'm really in the minority here, but hopefully some people can read a review from someone who absolutely LOVES Dead Space and considers the series one of the very absolute favorites.

I was expecting Dead Space 2 to be a great game, but it exceeded my expectations with beautiful, creative environments and a large array of both enemies and weapons with which to kill them.
