I have always been a fan of the Call of Duty franchise and I believe that, through the years, Infinity Ward and Treyarch have done a great job creating and developing the Call of Duty universe for us all to enjoy. Being an avid fan of the Modern Warfare trilogy (I dedicated many hours to Modern Warfare 2 over the past two years), I decided to pick up the Hardened Edition of Modern WarfareI have always been a fan of the Call of Duty franchise and I believe that, through the years, Infinity Ward and Treyarch have done a great job creating and developing the Call of Duty universe for us all to enjoy. Being an avid fan of the Modern Warfare trilogy (I dedicated many hours to Modern Warfare 2 over the past two years), I decided to pick up the Hardened Edition of Modern Warfare 3. I did this for a number of reasons, and I have to say the content that came with the game did not disappoint. On to my review of the actual game: Gameplay (8/10): The singleplayer does a great job of tying up the loose ends of the story and ensuring that everybody gets a good ending, from those such as myself who have been following the franchise since CoD4, to people who have picked up Modern Warfare 3 as their first title. I won't spoil it for anybody, but I'm a big appreciator of the CoD storylines and the ending of this even took me by surprise. The story is well-built for the game, even though it still includes some of the 'typical' things you'd expect in a Call of Duty game. Survival and Spec Ops add a fresh feel to the CoD franchise however, and will add lasting value for those not interested in multiplayer. Graphics (6/10): The graphics of this game are by no means BAD. They are crisp and enjoyable and the moments where you need to see the action are full of colour and easy to see. At the same time, with games such as Skyrim and Battlefield 3 raising the bar this year graphically, the Modern Warfare 3 graphics are nothing to write home about. They won't hurt your eyes, but at the same time, they won't knock you out of your seat. Sound (7/10): It has become tradition for me to play Call of Duty singleplayer AND multiplayer with Turtlebeaches, and the only game previous to this deserving of a 5 or higher would be Black Ops, which was very ambient and made you genuinely feel like you were reliving the experience. So we come to Modern Warfare 3, and I must admit, they haven't done a terrible job of the sound in this game. It's crisp, clear and if you listen carefully during the quiet bits, you can hear the background noises. Dogs barking in favelas, people chatting in cities. But therein lies the issue: There are very few moments in this game where things can be classed as 'quiet'. Multiplayer (9/10): This will be the main point of argument for most people. While I don't believe a game should be judged purely off it's multiplayer, let us all be frank for a moment - 90% of people buying Call of Duty will very rarely do so for the singleplayer. The Call of Duty multiplayer is the marmite of the multiplayer world - You either love it, or you hate it. I, personally, have been a long standing fan of the multiplayer in Call of Duty, and I'm currently 3rd Prestige in Modern Warfare 3. Let me state something as of now: If you preferred the long-sighted maps on MW2, where you could take your time, then don't count on MW3 to do much for you. Currently (In the foreseeable future with maps, this may change.) the MW3 multiplayer caters to the sugar-rush, ADHD 13 year old, who enjoys running everywhere with an SMG/Shotgun, gunning 4 people down, and running off. Assault rifles and LMGs are useable, but if you can't quickscope you won't find much in the way of sniping here. Lasting value (5/10 w/o multiplayer, 8/10 w/): Call of Duty has never been known for it's singleplayer. For most people it's all about the multiplayer, and without it the game is a good 30/40 hour grind before you can see the back of it. Multiplayer is where this game's lasting ability comes into it's own. A singleplayer adventure, this is not. Final comments: Call of Duty is what it is. With the seventh installment comes very little in the way of new ground. If you've been a fan for a long time, you know what to expect and you're likely to already be enjoying it. If you're not interested in the multiplayer and only want a singleplayer experience, you're probably better looking to Skyrim or some other singleplayer build. For those who enjoy a fast-paced FPS however, do not let the hundreds of negative comments (that clearly haven't been thought out) put you off. Call of Duty is a great game in it's own right, you just have to give it a chance. Expand

Unoriginal, lack of innovation, gimmicky, are just a few words to describe a game like this which gets a free pass by critics for the lack of unique new features while other games are harshly reviewed. I played COD4, and from there on it has been a steep downhill slope for the franchise. Stick to Battlefield 3 if you crave something that requires more skill and is a bit more mature.

I love playing multiplayer in a game where you spawn right on top of a bouncing betty, or better yet spawning right in front of someone and getting shot in the back, or how about shooting someone in the back and then they have time to turn around and shoot you once and your dead, here's a favorite, planting a claymore, it clicks in front of someone and never explodes! After a week of soaking up the game in it's entirety, I find it very hard to give a review score for a game that is split into 2 very different parts.

    Part 1 Campaign.

For me, this was extremely good. I had zero disc graphics lag and the game ran very smooth, reminded me of a stripped back version of MW2 which most COD4 fans would adore. The waves of opposition came at a good rate, with the odd cheeky guy waiting to pounce to catch you off guard, to help it look less linear. The target hits was somewhat off, but another burst of fire made me forget that, unlike BF3.

The ending was nicely dramatised and left me feeling like I had achieved 'THE END' which gave me hell at the point where I switched elevator's in a sweet little jump. I found the roomful of guys extremely hard to beat until I realised the tactic was to hold back in the lift foyer. Nice all-round game I thought.

    Part 2 MultiPlayer.

Started off quite well, I played it for approx 1 hour before the servers were closed on Wednesday 2nd Nov for a while. I jumped back onto it on saturday 5th Nov for a good old gaming session, which once again seemed really great, plus I love the set-up of 99% of the new maps.

It all started to go slightly sour for me online at approx 7pm when I had difficulty killing people who weren't even shooting back, then would turn around and 1 or 2 shot me. I was wondering why the transformation had occured and put it down to my quite impressive connection of 100mb, but it simply kept happening even as far as the 8th Nov.

It seems there is the usual graphical 'hold-back' whereby anyone on a great connection can't see the opposition as fast as they should be able to, to 'even' the broadband speeds up. OH how wrong they have got this side of the game. Same as BlackOps.

When are the people in charge of latency going to realise that those with higher spec broadband, have paid for this to improve their gameplay, not to be used as a server, not to be killed by a guy who I am shooting who is currently facing the other way till he see's my bullets pass through him, turns round and 1 shot kills me stone dead. This is classed as gameplay interference and should be cut dead from the activision servers RIGHT NOW. You are targeting high end broadband or uniquely good killers, in favour of 3mb broadband or noob users, which I cannot stress enough, is ruining the fundamentals of the game for these, the most dedicated of your users.

The game has outsold BOPS and based on the campaign I know it is better, same MW2, but the online is where most players will travel and even though the campaign deserves a 9 the online deserves a 5.

Sort out the online and I will give you a 10 next time - but don't cheat the system, cut the bull and stop lagging out the high-end user. He is the guy with the money BTW. You are using an archaic system on this side of the fence which does not work in the UK half as well as you may have planned. In short - SORT YOUR MESS OUT!

There is no more of a bigger insult than this game.

Go buy Skyrim, it will be good for the next five years. Unlike this iteration of COD. Prepare for the same tired formula next year. Unless they actually innovate a bit

In other words, fanboys. Forget em. Seriously. This game. I liked. and dont even try to compare it Black Ops, its got nothin to do with it, this is infinity ward, the company that revolutionized first person shooter games with MW back in 2007, half that stuff those battlefield fanboys are bleeting on about came from ideas in MW. Why complain about lack of innovation when they had a formula that works so well with the 2 previous games? The graphics were always very good, so I honestly dont know why anyones complaining about that, or why it even matters that much. The campaign while admittedly a little short, is still fun, I dont believe anyone who says they didnt enjoy chasing a train in london, or firing hell down in Paris, or those parts where you actually feel like your in a warzone, and thats the whole point isnt it? Sorry if it wasnt realistic enough, hopefully next time you get one life for the whole game, maybe you should go join the army. Multiplayer, addictive as ever, fun, and as always irritating, but it still keeps you coming back. New maps are in no way small, theres great new game modes that you will want to keep playing, Spec Ops is always fun with a friend, and im glad they didnt tread on zombies, as thats Treyarchs baby, but rather try something new with Survival mode. I will get hours out of this game, because at the end of it all, its not perfect, but its bloody fun, and thats what matters in my opinion. And the MW3's gameplay is amazing, like in every CoD. Every multiplayer game you'll play will be packed with action, explosions and firefights, and after every one you'll feel exhausted by the amount of pure fun you just got.

Wile I won't say it's perfect or the most innovative thing that's ever happened to the first person shooter genre, it still provides a solid multiplayer experience, despite much of it being recycled from Modern Warfare 2. No thought. The only time this game pushes the envelope is when it attempts to be controversial, in what are CLEARLY cheap attempts to grab media headlines - they understand that any attention is good attention in the gaming business. At this point, the so-called "critic" reviews are a joke. They may go through and give you a rundown on the game's faults, realize that the game's good points are few and far-between, only to completely reverse direction at the end and say, without any trace of self-awareness, "9/10." Because god forbid they be blacklisted from reviewing the next mega-hit that the company puts out (which, ironically, is a trend that they are helping perpetuate). At this point, we as gamers really need to step up and take notice of bias in our gaming sites.

We as gamers need to do a lot of things, actually. Most importantly, we have to stop letting them shove media hype down our throats. Is MW3 ACTUALLY bad enough to warrant the zero I give it? No. In reality, it should be more like a three. But we can't compromise anymore. We can't allow constant headlines on IGN to dictate our purchases. We can't allow companies to sell us generic, shallow crap and get away with it. We can't allow companies to copy (more or less verbatim) previous formats and shove them down our throats. It's time that we, as gamers, finally take a little pride for once in our chosen lifestyle and tell the gaming industry that we're not gonna to take it, no, we ain't gonna take it, we're not gonna take it, anymore. Innovation should be celebrated, not labeled as dangerous and used sparingly. And certainly not completely absent, as it is in Modern Warfare three.

So when you're at Wal-Mart, or Gamestop, or where ever, do the industry a favor: Do not buy this game.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
