On with the review. The campaign picks up almost immediately after MW2, and it's bang bang, boom boom start to finish. You toss in U.S. Army's Delta Squad in the battle for New York, then on to France, Germany, UK, it starts to feel like the COD we remember from the WWII shooter era. The problem, is other than Soap, Price, Makarov, and company we have seen since the original MW series started, all the other characters feel very disconnected, I found it extremely difficult to connect with any of the Delta, SAS, GIGN, or any other organization portrayed. But our heroes from MW, and MW2, are back. I wont give away the story or any plot points, but it ties the series up nicely, and ends it, no cliff hanger, no BS, the story ends, but it just didnt feel satisfying, now mind you, I don't know how you can turn up the heat any higher than 11, but other than the Price/Soap/Makarov characters, I was just shooting anything that was on the other end of the hallway.

The multiplayer is a level of balance not seen since the first MW game, the GL's have been toned down, the maps feel much less claustorphobic, and much less obvious choke points. Yes, the other team can still pin you down if they are effective, but that effectiveness degrades quite a bit. I still found myself spawning next to the guy who just killed me, or stabbed in the back by the guy I just killed, and am still performing the reload for, but even thats small potatoes. You will spend much of the first portions of multiplayer getting award after award, and it's nearly rapid fire, but it feels like a ploy to keep you interested rather than actually award you for an accomplishment. It is still satisfying when you hear the noise, or rank up, but when you see some of the reasons as to why you got the award, you just think to yourself "THAT was it?".

Our friendly neighborhood Nuke is gone, all the modes are in tact, including a new super addictive Kill Confirmed mode, everytime you get a kill, you collect dog tags from your enemy, however, you begin to wonder if risking your own head is worth it when you see the golden tag in front of your face, when some jerk with a rocket launcher is waiting on you to go for it, or should you get the red tags and save your team the death point? I find it fun, and keeps me focused for hours.

I was lucky enough to get the game before a lot of people stateside got it home (Japan), I spent the first few hours or so thinking I was hot stuff killing everything that moved. After work ended, I got a really nasty awakening, aside from continual deaths and frustration, screaming kids were back to let me know what they were planning on doing with my mother that particular evening, and how much these puny voices claimed they could pound me to a bloody pulp if they saw me in person, yep, MW is back, and mom didnt look at the ESRB rating again.

I don't hate MW, or any Modern Combat games, they are well done, and polished well. I was more turned off by MW3 that within the first 3 hours of playing online, I ran into 6 hosts that were cheating/hacking/exploiting, 8 people were ALREADY 10 prestige, and maxxed out all around, and the leaderboards had already been screwed with.

One more note, I am disappointed that COD Elite service to date (21 November) has been either hit or miss, or just broken. The companies know how wildly popular this series is, but they werent "prepared" for the overload? What did they think was going to happen? To the biggest entertainment launch in history, great work, now please go back to the drawing board, and get something new out there.

The Special Ops aren't anything ground breaking, and survival is a welcomed addition, but after a few games of both you'll grow tired of them quickly. That leaves the us with the multiplayer, this is the bread and butter of CoD games. This is where you will spend countless hours fragging friends, and foes alike. The only problem is that MW3's multiplayer is arguably worse then previous installments overall. Sure, some things they do tight, such as the perk rebalancing, and gun leveling, but gameplay-wise it is a step backwards. Spawns are bad at best, maps aren't memorable, after 3 installments they still have failed to give us a proper system link option and private game options, which are vital to competitive CoD, they did away with the dive from Black Ops. I feel that if you really are a fan of what CoD is all about, the multiplayer, then you might-as-well stick with Black Ops, as it already has quality maps, very polished gameplay, and an overall better multiplayer experience. Disappointing sums MW3 up nicely. The trailers made it look like it was shaping up to be one of 2011's best games. Instead we got MW2 with a couple of add-ons. Multiplayer, is well MW2, it's the exact same, plays the same, looks the same but it does have some different kill streaks which is a positive. I gave MW3 a 6 purely for the story, it was compelling and it was just a really good story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MW3 is an awful game. Simple as that. After watching the MP briefing at CoD XP, i really believed that this latest instalment could, at least, breath life into this stale franchise. However, MW3 is merely a lazy, copy and paste effort of MW2. In fact, everything in MW3 is a massive expansion pack, which could easily have been added into its predecessor, with nothing new or innovative added.
MW3's story picks up where MW2 left off with Captain John 'Soap' Mactavish fighting for his life after getting stabbed and left for dead and the continuation of the Russian invasion of the United States. Vladimir Makarov, the mastermind of the invasion, is still at large after his escape at the end of MW2 and the hunt for him takes you to various locations across the world from the East Coast of the US to mainland Europe and Africa as you view the conflict through the eyes of various characters.
The game's presentation, while not terrible in anyway, is quite unremarkable. The game is identical to MW2, in terms of visuals and gameplay. You'll still get massive firefights and giant action set pieces but for those who've played previous titles in the series (which would be most of you) you will find nothing special. The voice acting, however, is generally very good with Billy Murray and Kevin McKidd putting in fantastic performances once again as the iconic protagonists Captain John Price and Captain Soap MacTavish. Craig Fairbrass, who voiced Gaz and Ghost in MW1 and 2 respectively, also returns to voice Sergeant Wallcroft of the British SAS (who had a minor role in MW1). However, much to my disappointment (and to the disappointment of others i'm sure), Fairbrass' role is extremely minimal compared to his previous roles. William Fichtner and Timothy Olyphant also put in decent performances as Delta Force operatives Sandman and Grinch. The soundtrack by Brian Tyler is also good, however it lacks that epic feel that Hans Zimmer expertly delivered with his score in MW2. However, Hans Zimmer is in a league of his own so to compare him with other composers is massively unfair.
Gameplay in MW3 is frustratingly similar to past entries. Usually this involves things like fight your way towards destroying objectives to rescuing hostages to defending locations. Its become too familiar and doesnt represent a satisfying challenge. In fact I completed the SP campaign on veteran difficulty in 3 days with relative ease as the gameplay mechanics have become so overused to the point where it becomes so predictable. Spec ops returns and, as before, can be fun for a short while but there is no real reason to play multiple times once you get every star. Survival mode, a new mode in which you defend yourself from infinite waves of enemies, works just fine in MW3 but is hardly innovative as it has been seen in many other franchises. The MP is where the game really disappoints. Robert Bowling, community manager of Infinity Ward, promised that the MP was more balanced than before. This is true to some extent. Certain perks which overpowered players such as OMA and commando have been removed. Perks that gave players power advantages such as stopping power and danger close are also gone. Familiar perks such as Sleight of Hand and Steady Aim have been tweaked to allow pro variants that better complement and balance its base variant e.g. SoH Pro allows faster weapon swapping as opposed to faster aiming. Shotguns are thankfully primary weapons once more and the game ending nuke doesn't return. This means that there is more focus on gun on gun gameplay that relies more on skill than perks and less reliance on air support to do the work for you. However, the same frustrating problems still exist. For starters, the matchmaking system is awful as ever. Playing team games is an extremely frustrating affair as the same gung-ho, lone wolf style of play remains, where players care more about their KDR rather than playing the objective. Even with the new pointstreak system, where you are rewarded with points for taking out air support and capturing objectives as well as racking up kills, you will still find players who play solely for kills rather than objectives. Is it really that difficult to go to TDM to improve your KDR? Even in TDM you will find bad players who don't know they're doing and will often lose matches for you. Camping exists tenfold in all game modes, mainly due to the poor map design as well as the inclusion and abuse of the blind eye and assassin perks which render you immune to air support and recon devices. Stealth is perfectly fine but using it to camp is game breaking. The terrible spawn system, which has marred the last 2 titles, has returned along with the awful hit detection which makes for a frustrating experience overall. If you're looking for a rewarding shooter get Battlefield 3 instead or perhaps get Call of Duty 4 the last great CoD game

And personally I thought Gears 3 was less than amazing, But I have had some fun on Call Of Duty games, for all the inevitable frustration that goes with them. I'll admit, my favourite was World At War, but I played COD 4 enough and spent some time on Modern Warfare 2 before I got distracted by something else and never came back. I will say I wasn't really interested in the campaign. Despite completing COD 4 and MW2 I can't really remember much at all and I'm not a big fan of this kind of on rails campaign anyway. I doubt I'll ever complete this one with Skyrim and even Saints Row: The Third still to be played. The new Spec Ops modes are entertaining enough, though. At least it wasn't zombies again, right? And even if you liked the zombies, at least they're not charging you money for the same old zombies mode (at least for now,) right? Anyway, multiplayer is exactly what I expected; Modern Warfare 2, more or less. As a casual COD player I can't really tell the difference. And by reading this, I'm guessing you kind of fit into the same crowd. Don't get me wrong, it plays well enough and it's still worth some fun but it's nothing new and it still has the same set of problems, especially with not using dedicated servers... I know people have ranted about that fact since it was released, but it is annoying. The weapons roster consists of exactly the guns you could have guessed... AK, M16, etc. They're 'customised' in the same ways. But as mediocre an offering as Black Ops was, at least it had a crossbow and a **** axe to mix things up a bit. The maps aren't great either. They mostly look cool but they're not a lot of fun. I can understand the phrase 'if it ain't broke don't fix it,' but I would have used something more along the lines of 'not bad, not perfect' to describe the last few games, and that's definitely true this time around as well. I'll give it a 6, because while it's still good enough to exceed mediocrity, it's nothing amazing or even new. I'll still play it until I get bored, but sadly I can already feel it'll be collecting dust on a shelf in my local CeX soon enough. Expand

Big deal. Weapon levels? Who cares. Sounds like IW's version of the Madden hit stick. And as for being the most balanced CoD yet, I say boo. Ever hear of the Type 95 IW? Someone dropped the ball on balancing that thing out. Essentially MW3 is nothing more then a really big expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2. I mean if you really really liked MW2 then this is the game for you, but after awhile don't you get tired of the same old thing? Everything is more or less the same. I hate to break it to you Activision but Battlefield has for sure set up shop in your town. And they mean to get bigger and better. I suggest you stop milking this cow and start with some major effin overhaul of your flagship game or you're going to have another Guitar hero on your hands. Yes, a lot of people will still be playing MW3 and they will buy and play the next CoD but rest assured the movement has begun. The world is catching on to you and it will only get worse from here on out unless you do something about it. As for Call of Duty Elite: what a waste of money. The only part of the game I enjoyed was the story line and that was only because it distracted me from the shocking multi player. In my opinion the multi player on mw3 is worse than any of it's predecessors. The first thing to note is the maps, which are either ridiculously small or way too big with about a million objects for people to camp or hide in. Then we have the shockingly over powered weapons... In black ops, u at least had a second to react if you came under fire, whereas in this u literally see the small red marker from the direction you have been shot from and then u find ur self dead... To add insult to injury they have also reduced the power of weapons like the grenade launcher and rockets so you can pretty much walk away from a direct hit. Oh and u also have sniper bullets that can kill 2-3 people with 1 shot one minute, then just bounce off when u hit someone directly in the chest the next. And just like everyone else has mentioned, I'm sure we all love respawning in front of the guy who just killed us so that we can get killed again... So overall if ur thinking of buying this game dont, and if you have, take it back as soon as you can before its only worth a tenner and Uve lost loads of cash and hours of life you'll never get back. Spawning twice in front of the same person that killed you-spawn again take 5 steps on a bouncing betty- spawn get a kill to only get killed from behind. The sound is also a another issue the footsteps are so muffled that it seems like everyone has the dead silence perk on. It seems like the developers made every effort to slow the pace of the game down. -no unlimited running. longer weapon switches. Its a baby shooter not worth the money i paid for it Expand

Same old douchebag formula. A highly predictable plot, straight out of hollywood's most unexciting summer blockbusters, and a multiplayer where the 13 year old obese gets their chance to shine, with his trusty sniper rifle in hand and a perfect bush to hide in. Congratulations Activision, you managed to make millions off of human stupidity yet again!

Agreed with all the previous reviews posted about this game. Its basically a MW2.5 trying to looks more realistic by competing with BF3 but fails completly with the graphics. (not a fan of BF series either)
The campaign is forgettable if not unplayable and boring, you can literally run through the game fire a couple shots and be done with it in the time it would take to watch a football

The campaign is forgettable if not unplayable and boring, you can literally run through the game fire a couple shots and be done with it in the time it would take to watch a football game. But I think if you asked most players they would say they buy the game for the multiplayer aspect of it not the campaign. The MP is the same normal shooter you would expect from the COD series, yet this one has a darker color scheme. My problem with is is hackers or boosters and Sledgehammer or Activision doesnt do squat to fix it. The hit detection is generous, spawn killing is rampant and boosting is just as frivolent. I get more frustrated playing the MP on MW3 then any other game. For example, having Assassin Pro on the enemy shouldnt see your name or their reticle should not turn red. Well guess that doesnt work cause croutched in the shadows with a silenced weapon and Assassins pro perk on they were able to long shot me from across the map with a Assault rifle. The big question is how can they possibly see you if you cant see yourself on their kill cam??? Well I spent time in forums and boards you can find exploits for the radar and aimbots online already which really ruins the MP experience. Seriously, take the time to "google" hacks or exploits for MW3 you wills ee videos and a bunch of stuff which helps people cheat and boost. Activision should get their crap together, if you want a decent multiplayer game go play Gears of War 3 or go back to Black Ops its not as frustrating as this garbage......

I know MW3 isn't made from the same people as Black Ops, but MW3 took so many steps backwards from Black Ops. Something as small as taking out dive to prone (aka Dolphin Dive) to something as big as making the Wager Modes they brought over from BO only available in private matches. This game doesn't innovate. The campaign's entire formula consisted of:

-crash -crawl slowly to your feet

-fire fight on foot for 20 minutes
-zoom, cheap visual effect, something like a jet flying over head and make you think 'oooh, ahhh'
-closing scene with an injury or another helicopter crash. -rinse, repeat

I evenly traded my copy of MW3 for Black Ops.

What more can be said except that it's more of the same old same. That's a good thing if you go into it knowing exactly what you're going to get. A brief but full of action campaign and a relentless multi-player that's fast paced and full of lead. My only gripe would be that the guns are very erratic and hit detection still seems to be amiss. Modern Warfare 3's campaign is very entertaining. These games are Michael Bay movies played out through a control. The sound, the spectacle of it all was off the charts. and this is something that has gotten bigger and better as the series has gone on. Not many first person shooters have changed the wheel over the years and i never MW3 to do it so i got was i was expecting. I understand where the frustration comes with regard to multiplayer. It hasn't changed a great deal. Kill Confirmed and some of the new killstreaks are a nice addition but it is essentially the same thing. But if you bought this game purely to play multiplayer than that is your own fault for being dissapointed. You should have bought battefield 3 which hasn't got any hate compared to MW3 and the campaign in that game put me to sleep. The graphics were incredible but the rest of it just doesn't hold up to the MW series. So yea i gave it an 8.0. and i think that is accurate. anyone new to the series would be blown away by what MW3 has to offer (campaign or otherwise). and veterens to the series know what they are getting and last i checked millions are playing it. So go somewhere else with your hate! Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
