Jan 15, 2013Any gamer that cries for a new, classic Castlevania should put their money where their mouth is and buy this game immediately. Beyond that recommendations are harder to make.
-
Jan 9, 2013Grasshopper Manufacture and Digital Extremes once again team up and deliver a twisted variation of a classic game-mechanism. Black Knight Sword is their take on the 2D-platforming hack-and-slash games of yesteryear, and despite a few balancing issues it comes out as a solid experience. For fans of absurdism, this is a must-have.
-
Dec 13, 2012Black Knight Sword is a good return to the roots of the 16-bit action games, well crafted, with an amazing design in terms of setting and ambiance. The campaign isn't very long, but the most insane and bizarre high-level entertainment of the year is guaranteed.
-
Dec 25, 2012Anyone up for a Suda 51 game? If so, step right up and play some Black Knight Sword, which will surely challenge you, envelope you in a dark fairy tale-atmosphere and present you with a lot of weird situations. Don't expect a reinvented wheel and you'll most definitely have a good time.
-
Dec 14, 2012It's fun and challenging but, above all, unique. There are some issues related to the control of the characters that prevent it from becoming a must-have, but still is a great choice worth having a try.
-
Jan 16, 2013If you are a big fan of Suda 51/Grasshopper studios, I would absolutely recommend giving it a try but for others it might seem like too little compared to what other 2D sidescrollers offer.
-
Dec 20, 2012The difficulty level goes way beyond what you usually describe as "challenging, but fair" – this is do-or-die-retro-feeling. This illegitimate spawn of Ghosts'n Goblins and the humour of Monty Python doesn't disappoint when it comes to the audiovisual design. Unfortunately the mechanics are not near as creative.
-
Dec 14, 2012An enjoyable side-scrolling adventure that's elevated by its stylistic visuals and unsettling atmosphere. Fans of classic platformers like Castlevania or Ghosts n' Goblins will definitely enjoy the old-school gameplay, while everyone else will revel in the papercraft setting and dark humor that frames it.
-
Sep 4, 2012Black Knight's unique presentation is certainly memorable, and fans of hardcore combat platformers like Mega Man will relish its considerable challenges. But less masochistic souls will just curse up a blue streak and move on to something less merrily sadistic. [Nov 2012, p.77]
-
Dec 14, 2012For a game that's so strongly unique, Black Knight Sword sadly bleeds out much of its charm through a few gaping flaws.
-
Mar 21, 2013In general, this is another platformer like any other out there. However, its presentation is enough to make you have it under you weirdest games list, even if the game experience is not that meaningful.
-
Feb 5, 2013A lot of good ideas but badly implemented in an anonymous gameplay.
-
X-ONE Magazine UKJan 29, 2013It's not a complete car crash by any means but Black Knight Sword's refreshing setting can't conceal the loose combat, disjointed difficulty and overall lack of ambition. [Issue#94, p.86]
-
Jan 3, 2013Black Knight Sword is a stylish anachronism, but an anachronism nonetheless. Its richest ideas are to be found in the presentation, the aesthetic, the art direction and stage direction. Elsewhere, this is a rather rote production, its substance plainly enjoyable, but mostly forgettable.
-
Dec 17, 2012Play is built around evading attack, then countering with frenzied sword stabs or a selection of spells, so it's a shame that the all-important dodge move doesn't quite work.
-
Dec 14, 2012A minor effort from Suda51 and Digital Reality, but with some clever presentation and a peculiar atmosphere that enhances some fairly ordinary action.
-
Games Master UKFeb 9, 2013The entirety of Black Knight Sword is spent fighting against the staccato movements and flimsy combat. [March 2013, p.81]
-
CD-ActionFeb 6, 2013As a Suda51’s game Black Knight Sword had to be odd. The problem is that its weirdness feels forced and the gameplay itself is very simple. [CD-Action 02/2013, p.49]
-
Jan 14, 2013The design is horrible and the sound is even worse. Add a mediocre gameplay and we can't grade Black Knight Sword any higher than a simple 4.
