It amounts to a technical demo of the U3 engine in essence. In gameplay, it's repetitive and easy. Really, plasmids are nothing new, we've seen similar things in Jedi Knight II, System Shock, etc. Graphically it's impressive. But what everyone praises it for- storytelling- it seems subpar. Am I the only person who sees the blatant Atlas Shrugged ripoff as a ripoff, not an "influence"? It isn't influenced at all by the philosophy as a few reviewers claimed, no doubt too enthralled by the bandwagon to read the book in question before jumping on it. It seemed like every reviewer had a hardon for the games-as-art idea and wanted to talk about it as much as possible instead of the lackluster gameplay, but fine, where's the meat of the plot? We have this: "Ryan believes in this thing completely, and Fontaine believes in nothing. At the end of the day, they're almost equally dangerous. [Fontaine] is a nihilist, all he cares about is himself. He has something missing in him that makes us human." I missed how this is any more interesting than the time honored concept Nintendo uses of light-world/dark-world. Expand

Awsome...awsome game. One of the most engaging experiences with the first person shooter. It doesn't reinvent the genre...however...it nearly perfects it, and every detail seemed to be addressed with a stellar production value. The music...atmosphere, and graphics may be one of the best out there. Highly recommended for those looking for a beautiful and engaging experience.

Amazing game. I truly feel as if the developers put their heart and sould into this title. The only reason why I gave it a 9 because it drags a little in the middle, but if you can push through you will recieve one of the most rewarding final few hours in gaming. Do not listen to the reviewers who give it a 0 or 1.. I mean, they are talking about the brilliance of Doom 3....come on.

It's a .... mature game, full of themes and concepts that, quite frankly, are more easily understood if one has more life experience. This is not an insult in anyway -- it's just that this game is so remarkably different. It's not for those who want huge explosions and tons of different enemies to kill. Those are fine things in a game (I enjoy them also), but that's not this game's purpose. This game's goal is to immerse you into a new, yet familiar world ... one that's been ravaged not by aliens or invaders but by our own hubris ... and that allows a person to play the game the way they want. As another reviewer pointed out, it's only linear if you allow it to be ... it's only repetitive if you go in playing it like every other game you've played. It's not -- in terms of graphics (stunning), music (best I've ever heard), voice acting (award-worthy), and story (incredibly thought provoking), it's unlike anything ever made. I've never been so wowed by a game since Grand Theft Auto III, and while it's not everyone's style, I'd have to say it'll be a long time before I'm wowed again. Expand

As for some of the earlier posts. One person compaired it with the System Shock games. This is a System Shock game! Its been developed by the same people, and is openly noted as the successor to System Shock 2. Then for the Doom 3 comparison. If anything the makers of Doom 3 owe thanks to the Bioshock, since they also made System Shock 1/2 they have been in the full 3-D FPS Horro game way before Doom 3 came along, and now that I think of it I can definatly see how Doom 3 has pulled many influences from the System Shock series. Imagine DOOM 3 without the gut wrenching viscera and H.P. Lovecraft inspired enemies. Imagine (literally) a watered down version of the brilliant gothic designs of DOOM 3. Finally, imagine running through the same corridors without any environmental change whatsoever between the runs, about 5 times for each level. Repetition is tedious. Especially when there's nothing new to look at.

Boring and not very good. Amazing production values (graphics/sound) and an average story, although it was presented well. The problem is the gameplay. It is just so lacking, and it is very sad to hear this compared with the System Shock games. They are in a completely different league to this game. Also, anyone who gives a game 100 out of 100, should not be in the business of reviewing anything.

It's a good game overall, but after a while it gets rather repetitive. All you do is shoot one enemy after another that don't seem to change and the shooting mechanics take some getting used to. The story in general is great, some cool twists towards the end but not as spectacular as everyone says it is. However beyond these flaws the game is excellent and well worth a purchase.

Ever tried telling the security system to attack itself? Well neither have I, but it's worth a shot. Even better, you don't have to follow the arrow everywhere. There are actually rooms the story doesn't take you through. Go in them. As for the story, read Atlas Shrugged. This game is blunt about being based on Ayn Rand, and it does an amazing job of incorporating her philosophy into a game. You're playing a video game and learning political philosophy at the same time! Amazing! There are many, many disturbing moments that reminded me of something Silent HIll would think up. If you play this game like a regular FPS, that's all it will be. But if you take the time to think about your actions and the story, it's much more than that. You're constantly fighting off humans twisted by genetic alteration, and to do so you regularly use the same alterations on yourself. If that doesn't make you think, chances are you aren't aware enough to play this game. And I call it a game reluctantly, because in all honesty it's more like art. Expand

A science fictiony twist on libertarian/objectivist philosophies to bring real interestingness and coolness to sort of a zombie-survival story formula. One question though. Bioshock is an amazing game, because of how much strategy and complexity is involved in ever fight you get into. Not only is the gameplay some of the most fun I've had on a game since halo 1, but it also has the most well-developed plot of any game I've played in years. I reccomend that you all buy it, because you will never look back. Expand

I just couldnt bring myself to finish it. It wasnt that bad, it just wasnt anything special and I had better games to play (Halo 3). Although the story was interesting and the atmosphere was incedibly deep, the gameplay was meh. Killing the splicers and Big Daddies just felt like a chore and the . As Anthony said this game is an over marketed disasterpiece, a bit fun but not worth your 60 bucks. Better to rent this game since you will beat it in a night or two, it doesnt have multi-player so no reason to keep it. Don't buy into the hype guys the most anticipated games of the year are often times the worst.

I'm sure on the 360 this game feels a lot better but on PC it's a pale imitation of it's spiritual predecessor (system shock 2). It doesn't even work ergonomically, it's got useless controls and when it's not crashing the gameplay is actually very poor. See edges or gamecritics review for the real skinny on this 'game'.

Avoid like the plague or at least try on rental,.. oh hey that's exactly what you do when you BUY the PC version because the DRM means you get a few installs and that's it, even with it's revoke tool, it doesn't work so you basically won't get to install it much every time you reformat, which thankfully you won't want to anyway because the game is that dull.

A damp squib in the firework box of PC gaming and one best killed off before it's legacy comes to represent the 'best' of what gaming has to offer.

The plot began to fade and i just started from the begginning because it was so good.
There is not a great range of enemies, the big daddies are great but there are too many to make them fun, the alarms are extremely irritating and the rest of the enemies are amazing until later in the game where there are dozens running at you. Overall it leaves you feeling like your playing the very first DOOM game.
On the other hand the weapons are a bonus even though you never have any ammo for them.. and the powers are quite nifty even though you always use weapons instead anyway. The graphics are amazing and the storyline is great and very original aswell as the well developed subplots. The game has strived to achieve amazing detail and realism but most especially atmosphere, of which there is plenty.
Personnaly i believe that the game starts of brilliantly but it is then stretched out way too far.

Bioshock, at first, was full of so much hope.. we consumers lead to believe from the previews a few months back. Then came one of those familiar days when a game is released on a Friday, in which many people rush out from Work or School to buy 'the most anticipated game of the year'. I have done this with many games, including Bioshock on release day. Then came one of those familiar days when a game is released on a Friday, in which many people rush out from Work or School to buy 'the most anticipated game of the year'. I have done this with many games, including Bioshock on release day. I payed £40 for this game and i kept telling myself it's going to be an amazing game based on final reviews of top end magazines and websites.. i didn't find one bad review out there. I played the game for 2 hours straight, and i thought to myself 'yeah, i'm slowly getting into this..it's great!'. Yet as i progressed further into the game i realised it's the same thing over and over. There's only 2 types of enemies really.. the pathetic, annoying, running splicers and the big daddy's. There is a limited choice of weapons and ammo throughout the game and you will find yourself on 90% of occasions just using your wrench and plasmids. You will neally always be lacking ammo for your selection of nice looking weapons. The environment always looks similar to where you just left no matter where you go, and the compass arrow is painfully sensitive to your movement that it can be easy to go around in circles in some places. Overall this could have been a great title had 2K added a handfull of more gameplay features such as loads more ammo, a bigger variety of AI to encounter, and a less linear envionment leaving the user with a feeling of DeJavu. The only thing that is near brilliant is the storyline. Also, where on earth is the multiplayer? It is essential these days to have a multiplayer mode packed with a 'big FPS game' like this (could have been). If you want to play a great FPS that has multiplayer get Gears of War, Call Of Duty 4, or perhaps Halo 3 (the 3 biggest titles on the 360 thus far). Expand

Either you need to work on your aim, or use plasmids more. as theres always tons of ammo to find.. infact i felt there was a bit TOO MUCH... Others complained about some plasmids being too exploitable. Yes, some are VERY powerful (electrobolt) and if you wanted, you could tear through the game using only 1 or 2 plasmids. But what fun is that? The game gives you choices.. if you want to be "cheap" and just blast through the game as easily as possible than you can. But if you wish to have a little more fun, you can use some of the less powerful plasmids and set up elaborite ways to vanquish your foes. Finally the most ridicioulous criticizem of the game, its too "scary" or "evil" or "bloody". Are you kidding me? If Violence, blood, or other adult themes are not your cup of tea, then DONT PLAY THE GAME. Go play mario or the BEE MOVIE game or something. The level with the deranged doctor has to be one of the scariest levels in any game. I was tense and anxious during the entire level, it was very eerie and disturbing. THATS WHAT I PAID FOR!! i was expecting a scary, disturbing expirence. Just like a horror movie or psych thriller. This isint candy land or bible camp. People are appaled by violence in gaming, yet its perfectly fine in movies, TV, or real life... ive seen much worse in the nightly NEWS. Heres a tip for parents... MONITER WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE DOING. be PARENTS. dont expect TV or games to replace proper parenting. The games are not to blame, YOU ARE. You should be spending time with your kids and not expecting games to do it. These games are made for adults, the gamer generation is in their 30s now, and guess what our tastes have changed. i want to be scared, suprised, and challenged by my games. There is a picture of a guy with a friggin drill for a hand on the cover, what do you expect from the game? Unless its an underwater mining simulator, then guess what, its gonna be violent! This game is a mature title for adults, dont expect HALO type juvenile fun. Its dark, atmospheric, and requires thought on a higher level. This game is a piece of art. -c Expand

This game doesn't exactly redefine what a first-person shooter is, but it takes the innovations other games have made in recent years and takes them to an even higher standard. In the end, BioShock doesn't have much real competition in the FPS genre outside Half-Life 2. I like Halo 3, but this game easily overshadows it, at least as far as single-player experience is concerned. Expand

This is one of the best games that I have ever played. The story is immersive and has numerous twists and turns. The graphics, music and gameplay all exceptionally well done and really draw you into the story. This game rasises the bar for what a video game can be. A must have.

A marvelous art deco adventure from begining to end,Bioshock keeps you immersed "literally" and never quite lets you come up for air. It certainly beats anything else that has come out this year.....destined to become game of the year.

Certainly not worth the scores it has received. The graphics and storytelling are about all that's good - or rather, medicre - in this water-clogged interactive story. Gameplay (shoot once, run out of ammo, then pull out the wrench).

BioShock is a survival horror/FPS masterpiece because it takes the bland point shoot repeat style and shakes it up with plasmids, tonics, cunning enemies, and upgradeable weapons. This is easily the best survival horror game since Resident Evil 4.

This is a hard game for me to rate, because I was actually disappointed by it when I played, but it has kind of stuck with me since then. But with all the 100's, and hype about it being one of the greatest games of all time, I found it pretty disappointing. I felt the same way about Half Life 2, though, and I know most people loved that. Half Life 2 felt like what I would expect, with a few great moments, and a bunch of stuff that I could have done without, like having to fend off the face huggers and the mosquito flying things all the time. Likewise, Bioshock had a gripping beginning, hit its peak with the Fort Fright section(like Ravenholm in HL2), and then just kind of seemed like a standard shooter to me the rest of the way. I found only a few of the plasmids effective, so even though they had a lot you could do, it only made sense to use one or two most of the time. The story was good, but not amazing. The presentation was great, but after the first hour or two you're used to it and it just comes down to the gameplay, which was pretty standard. But I have looked back on it with a certain fondness in hindsight since I played it, so I think it was another case of too much hype inflating a very good game into a so-called "master-piece". It's worth playing, but lower your expectations before you start it so you can be pleasantly surprised instead of let down. Expand

It's a very much simplified, much easier, underwater (watered down?) version of System Shock 2. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's about time SS2 was re-released for gamers to know what a true masterpiece is like.

A brief search through the trash cans and tables of rapture will yield more than enough ammo. Also, the one-two punch introduced in the beginning of the game (shock+wrench) is useful throughout the entire game. Why use telekinesis on your enemies when you can just shock and whack them. Why use advanced tactics when you can just shock and whack your way to victory. Hacking? Its useful but too easy. Big daddys can be taken down by using a shotgun with electric bullets. Simple. Bioshock has many innovative features but it does not PROVIDE enough circumstances of which they can be utilized. Translation: Its too easy Expand

I would really say 8.5 here. The fact that there's no multiplayer is fine for a game like this, but its shortness hurts a bit. Its all about the story on this game baby. Difficulty in spades if you want it, or eternal re-spawns if you don't. Finding hiddin audio messages from the past and putting together your own past make this a kind of CSI-esque feel with a very dark premise. I would really say 8.5 here. 1. In a nutshell, beyond any shadow of doubt, BioShock is an excellent single-player shooter experience. The undeniable quality of this title and its emphasis on true and not pseudo-mature storytelling and character development make it a must-have for every self-respecting gamer.
  2. Its weak link is its unsatisfying no-skill-required combat, which might aim this one just over the head of the average Halo fan. But if you want to get a little fancy, there's a lot of fun to be had with some of the game's more indirect fighting methods. It builds an amazing atmosphere by using terrific graphics and sound to set a creepy mood. But BioShock's real strengths are as a compelling work of interactive fiction, and as a unique ride through a warped world with some great payoff built into its mysterious plot. If that description has you even the least bit interested, you won't be disappointed one bit.

The first-person shooter's great looking, has an engrossing storyline, a perfect balance of action and exploration and a totally customizable combat system that can be described as nothing less than video game rapture.
