Good game. Good ambiance and really beautiful. A lot of secondary mission to do.
I think it's less perfect than the first one. It's just maybe because the surprise is no more here, or maybe it's because this one is more open world so sometimes you don't know what you have to do.

The only problem that I had with Batman Arkham City is that the story had too many stories going on at once, which really confused me on my first play through, but that is all forgivable when you can look at everything else. This game really did improve a lot on Arkham Asylum. I love you have a lot of gadgets right out the gate and you are instantly flying around Arkham City. I love you have a lot of gadgets right out the gate and you are instantly flying around Arkham City. The story was definitely a strong point for this game and really sucked you in once I got going. I thought the main storyline was superb in how it incorporated so many people and antagonists without feeling like "okay, on to the next one". I didn't really play around with the side missions that much so I cannot really speak to the overall quality of those but I did find the few I did to fit in well with the story and the scenario without them feeling like a stray to-do list. I know everyone has mentioned this already, but the controls really are a huge improvement over the AA; combat felt tight and controllable. It seemed as though the gunmen were not as powerful this time around and the fist fighters were more powerful. In my opinion this leveled and prolonged the combat. Visually the game was a huge improvement over AA, and coupled with the 3D capabilities it was awesome. The depth of the 3D is perfect (although adjustable) and it definitely adds to the immersion without it feeling gimmicky in any way. The music was fantastic as well. I was really surprised how seamless the music was from flying around to being noticed by a helicopter and the pace picking up to it then calming down. It was extremely responsive and worked really well at invoking emotions in me that correlated with the scenario. The one thing that was bothersome at times was the open-world. I really enjoyed flying around but it got frustrating when I felt like I was going from one side of the city and then back again only to give off the impression that Arkham was a big place. I also a little annoyed with the cat woman sequences. They didn't really seem to serve a purpose to the overall story, and other than the combat I thought the sequences were rather boring. Nonetheless, these aspects did not take away that much from my experience and what I like was beyond memorable. I'll probably pick the game back up in the near future and play some of the extra content and side missions but for now I am satisfied with completing the main storyline. Expand

Arkham City is so much better than Arkham Asylum. It's gameplay is so much better, and there is more to do. However, the riddler trophies and riddles were in too big of a quantity, and too hard to get to. This is the only flaw in an otherwise perfect game.

Pros: everything I said in my arkham asylum review is still in it, enemy variation makes the game harder especially near the end, the best boss battles I ever played ever (I'm looking at you mr freeze and ras all ghul) mark hamills epic final performance as joker, giant open world, more reason to collect riddler trophys as he has hostages which you must go through deadly tests to free them in a way similar to a certain horror movie franchise, every single sidequest! Cons: while the story is great there are many moments which are just excuses to introduce a villain oh whatever more villains= more boss fights= more epic, a little too easy towards the beginning with really only normal thugs that attack really slowly one at a time with no weapons luckily it gets harder as you go on) mark hamills final performance as joker, why is there so much sequel baiting if the next game is a prequel?!?!?! Ultimately you won't give two s$&ts about the cons so go back to playing arkham city or if you don't have it go buy it now. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Officially the best superhero game EVER!

The new combat mechanics are like, making a high end Ferrari car even more faster, the voice acting is superb, thanks to old time veterans Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and The Joker, the story is even better than Asylum's story (Yeah I know, try to imagine). But it is the main villain, Hugo Strange, that makes this game work. The guy just plays it flawlessly. Oh yeah and the ending might shock you a little bit.

So if you are looking for a open world superhero game that actually works, we got the game for you. Go out and try it, I recommend it to everyone. Comic book nerds(like my self) will love it, and the non comic book nerds will learn the franchise and also love it!

A few cons that I noted were the unresponsive counter button(sometimes) which caused me to die as Batman many times, a few glitches(very minor) For eg: I got stuck on a helicopter during the campaign & wasn't able to proceed further... The Dark Knight returns to our disc trays for Rocksteady’s, Arkham City, and it’s one of this year’s most anticipated video games.

Following on from Arkham Asylum, a title that was a massive step-up from previous superhero based gaming, in terms of controls, movement, flow and story-line. It introduced a fresh & unique combat system that drew players into the action with gripping combo’s and counters, and had a more detective-like feel than most beat ’em ups.

Arkham CityArkham Asylum ended with a bang, watching The Joker mutate (through use of “titan”), to an epic final boss fight, and Arkham City picks up not too far along the timeline.

Bruce Wayne is captured by Tyger Forces under orders of Arkham Cities head of operations Dr. Hugo Strange, and it doesn’t take long for Mr. Wayne to suit up and reign justice from the shadows. The new story-line follows Strange, The Joker, and other masters of the criminal underworld’s quest to bring down the bat from the sky.

Sideline missions are a great use of the ‘open world’ factor, fellow super villains (including The Penguin, Mr Freeze and Bane) are pitted against Batman and his small entourage. These sub-plots allow for deeper character involvement, screen time and dialogue compared to that of its predecessor.

Arkham City has got all new modifications, tweaks and improvements, giving a much understood “Bigger, Better, Bolder” feeling to the game. Vastly noticeable is the open world aspect of the city (not seen hugely on Arkham Asylum), freeing players to soar from amazing heights, zip-line across the roof-tops and really take in the environment. Districts and relative locations such as Penguins Iceberg Lounge, and memory saddened Monument Theatre (where Bruce’ parents were killed) also reside within in its walls.

The graphics are better and seem more realistic in movement and appearance while still retaining that all important comic book look and feel.

Detective view is still available and crisper than ever, character representation and costume are thoroughly brought forward ( although Mr Freeze’s suit does look a bit “off”). Good to is the dialogue, gripping enough to keep you from skipping straight to the action.

New Gadgets are available through level-ups and have been expanded, giving the Utility Belt a diverse use in all situations. All utilities from Arkham Asylum are available from the beginning, so you can focus on getting those all-new awesome gadgets. Together with an updated combo system, predator moves, and bat-suit upgrades it pulls you even deeper behind the mask.

DLC (downloadable content) opportunities are available with Arkham City, with additional downloadable characters Catwoman and boy-wonder sidekick Robin. Along with campaign add-ons, creating ever more game-play.

Arkham City is an amazing game and will keep a lot of gamers wanting more. A third installment is hinted at within the story, and the though of being able to fly around the whole of Gotham City next time will have fans drooling in anticipation. Developers Rocksteady deserve credit for the hard work put in, awesome story line, great use of characters and… just go buy it, god damn it!

The combat is more repetitive than the first game. The enemy variety seriously lacks to the point that the only ways the devs can make the game harder towards the end of the game is by throwing more of the same at you, which really just becomes a battle of maintaining a good health bar. The back tracking is somehow worse in this game and even less justifiable. There is a whole city this time, not just an asylum and somehow you are still made to repeat areas over and over in the main story.

    Spoilers here
The story is great aside from Talia. In no way is she developed or interesting enough for me to give a rip that Joker kills her in the end. i don't know why the short amount of time in the third act of the game appears to be enough development for her to the devs, but it wasn't. It wasn't emotionally impactful at all.

Edit: interestingly enough Arkham Knight made me dislike this game even more. If you subbed in Jason Todd for Talia the set up for Knight would have been so much better and paid off in a really great way. What a missed opportunity.

Other than those complaints the story is great, the combat feels good, Joker is an amazing villain, and there is plenty of side content to go around. This is an amazing game with some frustrating problems.

The story is better overall than in the first one. There are a few negatives, however. While I did get lost a few times in the original, I got lost way to many times to be considered passable while playing this game. This style of game, in my opinion, should have stayed with the smaller, more enclosed map. I also feel like the story gets cut off way too soon. After the first boss fight with Ra's A Ghul, i didn't expect to see him again, until it's revealed that he's been working with Strange all along. After that, I was fully expecting another boss fight, perhaps after the death of the Joker. The first game ended just at the right point, so I dont know what happened here. Anyway, its a great game overall, just slightly worse than its predecessor. Expand

Now I'm not a plan of the precision platforming games where there is only one way to move from one linear area to another, unless the developers find a way to not make this the main part of the game. With an Arkham city to roam in, it feels more like a sandbox game with only the precision platforming interruptions when you have to enter the buildings for your quest. The big plus in this game compared to the first is that your Batman can finally knock weapons out of the enemies hands. Thank you! Plus you don't have just one attack button to mash anymore, but more like two buttons to mash plus a couple of combo moves tossed in. It's a shame that the extra characters of Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing are paid dlc because that would have made this a more awesome game and more than just an eight hour storyline. Expand

Unfortunately criminals and super villains have been allowed to run free and so it is up to Batman to step in and take control. Arkham Asylum took many people by surprise and fans of the first game will be immediately at home here. Rocksteady have retained the core gameplay that was so successful. Combat remains fast and fluid and with a wealth of new counters, some of which allow you to take on multiple enemies at once, as well greater variety of enemy types there is now far more diversity between different bouts.

The much hyped 'open world' acts more like a hub between different locations than a true open world like Liberty City but is for the most part a welcome addition. Side missions pop-up and can be accessed at any time and while the main campaign can be completed in well under eight hours these will keep you going for a far while longer. One minor criticism of the more open world is that the game does not always make it clear exactly how you are supposed to access certain areas which can lead to some frustrating back tracking at times.

Outside the main game the challenge maps also return offering the chance to earn medals and a place on the Xbox Live leaderboards and this all makes Arkham City a thoroughly enjoyable return to the world of Batman even if it is not the revolution that the original was.

Much of the time while playing it, I felt like the devs were giving me objectives to do just to fill up gameplay time without any actual substantive meaning. In fact, the majority of the game had to do with the same mission and inconveniences that kept hampering Batman's progress which the player has to play an hour more to overcome. On the contrary, Arkham Asylum had a brilliant sense of pacing and discovery, and nothing felt repetitive.

Overall, City is a good sequel to Asylum in terms of gameplay, visuals, and voice acting, but lacks the great pacing and intrigue of the first game's story.

The single player campaign is well paced with the catwoman missions and interesting side missions and when the game comes to an end you will have also collected a number of collectibles and arena missions that can be attempted with batman and also catwoman and robin depending on what DLC you have. Which leads me to the negatives, apart from the short single player and the surprisingly small city, the catwoman and robin DLC not being included on the disc is just a huge annoyance and it is becoming ridiculous, although I know its not the fault of the developer. At the end of the game, a hardcore mode is unlocked, however i didn't particularly want to play it again, as the gameplay can become somewhat repetitive at the end and as the game is story driven and once all of the secrets have been told they don't have the same impact. The arena mode was a nice time waster, but overall i felt that i'd payed £40 for a very enjoyable but very short adventure. For this reason i just couldn't stretch to giving the game a 9 and i'll award it a very high 8/10 Expand

This is a positive negative but I was just overwhelmed with all the riddles, trophies, side missions, main story, and challenges to accomplish and it sometimes felt like a never ending chore. At one point I had to make a conscious decision to just stick with the story so I would feel like I was making some sort of progress. But really when I get to be a super badass Batman to do all these "chores" I can't complain too much. This game is great and a must buy. I struggled to believe that 'City would be able to improve upon the formula of the previous game. However, upon playing the game these concerns were laid to rest relatively early, while I don't believe the opening moments had as much impact as it's predecessor, the moment the game opens up and allows you to glide around the converted center of Gotham makes this forgiveable. However, upon playing the game these concerns were laid to rest relatively early, while I don't believe the opening moments had as much impact as it's predecessor, the moment the game opens up and allows you to glide around the converted center of Gotham makes this forgiveable. The combat engine has been improved, allowing for multiple counters, and much more variety of combat choices through quick-fire gadgets, alongside this the levelling system was streamlined quite well, only gaining a high enough level to attain all upgrades a little after completing the main story-line. Detective mode has also been slightly altered, switching off in combat situations, and if activated in combat, static will blank vision of the player for a brief moment, enough to make it counter-productive when it is not intended for use.

As for the story itself, parts of it feel a little disjointed, with multiple objectives comprising of the main over-arcing story, parts felts shoehorned in a little, or cut down to fit constraints (project 10). The characters are all voiced, and animated well (shout outs to the two-face scene in the courthouse) with all characters feeling how they would be expected to, some even delivering a few pleasant surprises. In all it feels very comic book-esque, which may not be to everybody's tastes.

The challenge maps provide a nice little bit of post game fun, letting the player refine and experiment with combat or stealth prowess, using various locations from the story as stages within which to play the challenges, while I can't honestly say it will provide countless hours of post story game play, it does provide a nice little way to play with the game without having to load up your story save and go searching for a huge group to fight or take down with stealth.

Overall I really enjoyed the game, the Riddler challenges within story mode could have been a little less saturated, but things to do isn't really a big thing to complain about, while there is room for improvement, I don't believe it could have been achieved easily in this generation of consoles, and while Arkham City is a great, fun game, it is at the end of the day a sequel, therefore will never have the impact of the original without major design overhauls.

Gameplay - The fighting and predator gameplay have not changed in any substantial way from Asylum, but there also wasn't a need for it. The gameplay in this title still holds up very well and is very visually appealing. Chances are the people in the room will cheer just as much as you will after you pull off that 50x combo. Not to mention that, but with the addition of new characters that actually feel different from Batman, I feel a satisfactory update was made to gameplay. I noticed while using Catwoman that her counters and attacks seem a touch quicker than Batman's, coming at the price of gadget quantity.

Story - It's good. Some may say it is short but I think given the scope of the game and what is happening, it doesn't waste any time and gets you the details you need and leaves. There is also a slew of side missions to be had, although some are great and some not so great.

Sound - The voiceovers for the most part are very, very well done. You feel very immersed into the Batman universe. The only thing that can become repetitive is the thug banter as you swing around Arkham, but it is a small complaint.

Replay Value? - Yes and no. It depends on how much you enjoy the game overall. I got a good majority through New Game Plus mode, which is a harder version of the game, but with my limited gaming time I didn't have the heart to finish it as of yet. The challenge modes however are quite fun and place you into the parts of the game that are arguably most fun; combat.

In summary, get this game. Get it new, get it used if need be. If you like Batman in any way, you will get a kick out of this game. If you don't like him, you might be surprised.

The award-winning combat system is back and the addition of new gadgets, combos, and new characters is enough to evolve this feature. There are plenty of characters in this game, which some pop out of nowhere as a surprise, which keeps the excitement rolling. There is plenty of gameplay, with the addition of side-missions, Riddler's Revenge, other characters' campaigns, etcs. The game's drawbacks are quite noticable to a veteran gamer. The story is sloppy and will make you question Batman's decision-making abilities. The overall experience may be fun, but you'll soon realize that Arkham City is quite small, and it becomes extremely formulaic beyond the main story. While there are more things to do than in Arkham Asylum, it's not too far off from being AA 1.5, which means this game cannot be considered revolutionary. That title belongs to AA. The graphics are sub-par and nothing to be excited about. If you've been gaming on this gen since the start (back in 2005), then you're probably begging for a new generation to pop up already. Perhaps some sort of innovative multiplayer may have boosted the score to a 9. Assassin's Creed did this, which ended up being a huge success. In sum, if you enjoyed AA, you'll enjoy this game too. It's certainly larger than Arkham Asylum was, but that size doesn't seem to really pay off like it was supposed to, because on the whole the decision to make the game a sandbox was to the detriment of the experience. I appreciate sandbox gameplay, don't get me wrong, but it's only compatible with certain types of gameplay, and as I progressed through Arkham City it became clear that Rocksteady's Batman gameplay is not one of those types. That said, the gameplay itself is even better than the first one, with both the predator and combat mechanics expanded upon wonderfully, adding even more enjoyment to encounters. Furthermore, the story is also greatly improved, with the dialogue now feeling at least somewhat original. The biggest improvement would have to be the boss fights, which are actually really good now. The one that everyone mentions is the fight with Mr. Freeze, which is certainly a great battle that deserves attention, but my personal favorite was the one against Ra's Al Ghul. That said, even with the new additions to your repertoire of traversal skills, getting from place to place in Arkham City just isn't very engaging. There's more than one time when I thought that I'd honestly enjoy the game more if it were linear like Arkham Asylum was. However, the biggest issue with this game is its anti-piracy policy. If you didn't buy the game new, or if you just don't have Xbox Live, you can't play the Catwoman segments, which are a rather large part of the game. To Rocksteady's credit, even if you miss out on the Catwoman parts the story will still make sense, but it's a bit annoying to have Catwoman make an appearance near the beginning of the game, and then disappear until the final cuscene. But, mentioning the final cutscene gives me a convenient segue into easily the best part of this game: the ending. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say that the ending is shocking in the best possible way, and one particular reveal provides a wonderful payoff to lots of subtle foreshadowing throughout the latter parts of the game. Now, in point of fairness, I'm not entirely certain that that foreshadowing was intentional, it may have just been coincidence, but if it was intentional then that proves right there that Rocksteady understand subtlety: they can foreshadow so subtly that it's unclear whether they're actually doing it or not. In view of this, I'm prepared to forgive this game for a lot, even for locking off half its content. It's not perfect, but it's definitely at least as good as Arkham Asylum, if not better, and at the same time manages to feel like its own game, and for these reasons it's definitely worth playing. However the story and everything that revolved around that really makes this a great game, if for nothing else than to hear Mark Hamill perform his final performance of the Joker. The ending is great and I feel that everyone should play this if just to see how things turn out for our favorite bat. A couple of issues I saw were that Catwoman's story, a major part of the game, is not available from the start. You need to download it and good luck if you buy this used. Playing her story will cost you 10 more bucks, which means you should just buy it new until the price goes down if you want to experience the full story. Another thing I didn't like was the fact that pretty much 90% of the available side missions in the game were just to collect Riddler trophies. I expected something more when they said there would be hours of side missions to do. I did not want to waste around 8-9 hours of my life on a glorified fetch quest. Other than those things, this is a must play. Whether you want to experience the catwoman part of the story is completely up to you as it's not totally necessary to enjoy this game but you will miss out on alot if you don't play it. Expand

A really great game. Pros: Fantastic Graphics
    Great storyline
    Tons of side quests
    Amazing gameplay

Cons: Expected a larger environment from all of the hype
Irritated by the ammount of dlc downloads.
I think the skins should be unlockable instead of dlc.

Its not 'better' than Arkham Asylum. They're two very different games in design. 'Asylum' was a much more well-rounded, better paced game. In fact, the ending of 'City' is bland and disappointing. The pacing in-between is far-fetched, trope filled, and drags on.

Don't get me wrong, it has plenty of good parts. But nothing in the game ever feels complete. Even when the game ends you never really feel like you accomplished or even finished anything, because the nature of the story-telling is so oblique (not in an artistic way) and generally lacking depth. Even completing the game 100% is unsatisfying, unlike the last game. The story between Cat Woman and Two-Face feels like it was translated from Korean into Serbian, then back into English on Bablefish. The Cat Woman parts, especially her interaction with Batman, rarely make sense.

The design and atmosphere of Gotham is nice, if at times seeming unrealistic/fantastic, small, and strangely laid out.

The combat has made a slight improvement from 'Asylum', and there are new gadgets, but few really get used in any remarkable or new way. The detective mode is still simply looking around the room until your cursor changes.

There are plenty of bugs with combat, goons, and frustrating areas.

I did enjoy this game, but it was quite disappointing for me. The length was nice, but the whole thing seemed rushed and poorly thought out, and gives the impression that it was the combination of several different development project. I'm calling this one a franchise milk. Its not nearly the open world wonder it claims to be, and where it excels just barely surpasses where it flounders.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is easily one of the greatest games ever made. Why not a ten? The boss fights are too easy, especially if you are doing a second play through and even on the hardest difficulty, and new game plus this game can at times be too easy. This does not mean it is not challenging, but I think it should be harder. The combat is exquisite. The controls are really easy to learn, but hard to master (hence the easy to learn , hard to master). But what makes combat is the AI. Your enemies react to you when fighting. Some will run and pick something up to throw at you, others will run and hide, etc. The stealth gameplay in this game is incredible. They are more responsive and smarter than they were in Arkham Asylum. When you swing away on gargoyles, they don't just lose you and then continue walking around. They will shoot down the gargoyles making it harder to take everyone down. All the nay-sayers are lame, and just want to hop on the "batman games suck" bandwagon. There is no debate. This is a great game. Expand

I also try Arkham Asylum and Arkham City was much better. At least Batman responded to my controller inputs where-as in arkham asylum he would sometimes just sit there and get beat up.
One thing I did notice was when Batman ran away from the Thugs, they would catch up to him. Why is that?
You would like Batman appearing to be in much better shape would be able to out run them.
Graphics and sound effects were good. I turned off the music so I don't know how it sounded.
IMO I don't really think this game is a 10, but isn't as bad as some of those low, 5 or less, scores
I would recommend someone trying this game, but for a 'Keep it to Play it again' type game, no.

negatives:is it just me or is something...off with the controls? it feels like im not controlling batman at all, rather that hes controlling himself. half the time the controls feel somehow..slow? in batman you are not the batman, the batman is the batman it seems..
the riddler challenges are FAR too challenging, they are very, very hard.
the basic enemy can sometimes be far too observant and overpowered
some of the enemys such as the mad hatter are represented very badly where others are represented well.
line launcher can be hard to use as batman moves far too fast on it.

complaining the bat vehicles are not in the game. the streets are not big enough for the batcar and a lot of the streets are blocked off anyway, theres not really enough water for the batboat and the batplane drops stuff off and would make navigation far too simple. so theres reasons why these are not in the game. robins motercycle maybe inputtable..but if theres no batcar why put the motercycle in the game?so they didn't. still i would have enjoyed a batcar unlock of the cars greatest game, batman for the mega cd.

despite the negatives, you should defiantly play this game! the positives far outweigh the negatives!

The combat is good and feels unique (much improved from Arkham Asylum being more fluid and giving the player more options in combat). Most of the Batman franchise is over used in the game with too many villains that are just there for the sake of it without much use or need. unfortunately as its a franchise Batman will never really learn any real lessons about crime or criminals and there never will be an end to Batman's troubles, batman is never going to die which destroys any suspense of danger, he will never totally defeat his enemies either, Joker will always come back again and again and again which does water down the any story's significance. Arkham City is a fun game, undoubtedly, but they must have spread some serious love and $$ around to get all those 10/10 reviews. Read those reviews for what's good about it. Here's what's not:

    1) It's short, for one thing. Yes, there are a bunch of optional side-quests, but I've completed at least half of them plus the main story, and I can't possibly have put more than 10 hours in.

(The advertised 25 hours just for the main story is totally laughable.) I would guess that it would take maybe another 5 hours at most to complete all of the side-quests. The rest of the supposed 40 hours of gameplay must be just hunting for Riddler trophies, which is sort of interesting, but isn't real content.

    2) It's small. The open world thing is cool and all, but the prison/city feels very small. You can easily get from one end to the other in 3 minutes. Part of that is that travelling by grappling-hook + glider wing is very fast, but part is that the area is just small. There are 5-6 large internal areas that you have to work your way through, but that's not any more than were in Arkham Asylum. The asylum actually felt bigger to me simply because it took longer to get around and seemed to have more secret nooks and crannies.

    3) The plot makes no sense. The ending, particularly, is full of head scratchers. There's a big 'reveal' with flashbacks and ominous music and everything, but I couldn't even figure out what the reveal meant. It really does make no sense. The first game had a very cohesive and interesting plot. This game seems to at first, but just doesn't pull it all together.

    4) It's misogynistic. As you swing around the city, you are constantly overhearing conversations of inmates. Every few minutes, you hear one that has rape fantasies about Catwoman and/or Harley Quinn. The word **** seems to be used with particular frequency. There's even a scene where Batman grabs Harley by the throat, grins maliciously, then throws her to the ground. I wouldn't have as much a problem with this except for two things: 1) this is a rated T game, from a comic book/cartoon franchise, guaranteed to appeal to 10 year olds. 2) There's no push-back by any of the good guys. Batman never condemns the misogyny. At the very least, you could have Catwoman say something like "I'm not a **** I'm a kitty" as she clocks some dude with her high-heels. Or Oracle could say something like "Those guys in there sound like real ladies-men." But that doesn't happen.

I honestly think that Arkham Asylum was a far better game: more content, more interesting environments, better story.
