This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have mixed feelings about this game, and was only tipped towards rating it positively because of the main character. The protagonist, Shay Cormac, is my favorite player controlled character after Ezio Auditore. I also found the world expansive and beautifully designed. However, the collection quests reached the point of tedium and the ship play and development took away greatly from the Assassin aspects of Assassin's Creed. I also found it sad that this was for a time period prior to Connor's exploits, as you know that all of his work is effectively undone. However, the character development and design gives me great hope for future games. If they can return back to the story-driven focus, bring the collection quests back down to a 'fun' amount, and remove distractions like ship control/battles, I think AC can return to being a truly exceptional game. Decent Assassin's Creed game, with a weak story, awful side-missions and collectibles but also a decent game world, good main missions and fun ship gameplay (the ship is the best part of the game). Other problems are that the controls are still (after 7 main games in the series!) not very good, and the stealth mechanics are absolutely horrendous. Add that to the repetitiveness that this series is known for, and you have a game that should only be played if Assassin's Creed is your absolute favourite game series ever. Otherwise just play Assassin's Creed 1 and the Assassin's Creed II Trilogy and don't play the rest because you have seen it all by then (the only thing you will miss is the awesome ship combat) Expand

If this is the closing chapter of the colonial Assassin's Creed, then at least we can be happy this part of the story ended on a high note. It certainly was much more enjoyable than a certain next-generation entry which shall remain nameless.

It's no Black Flag, or maybe it's just trying a little too hard to be Black Flag, but the plot and cast hold up well, except maybe for Shay's accent. It's not quite "Hollywood Irish" bad, but it certainly grated on me a bit. The return of characters like Achilles, Adawalé and Haytham (I really missed that scumbag!) were more than welcome, and the plot's solid, even if it's not up there with the best of the Assassin's Creed series. Again, it knocks spots off of THAT other game that was released at the same time.

There are definitely some oddities in the gameplay. I ran into bugs the likes of which I never had to deal with in Black Flag, like being spotted by a guard who then vanished, only to immediately appear next to an alarm bell clear across the way and get the whole place coming after me. But who knows, maybe the lucky sod had some Precursor tech that allowed him to do so.

There's no getting around the fact that most of Rogue is just a rehash. But it's a rehash that works on most levels, and thus far (I think I'm about 70% through the campaign at this point) is doing much more to propel the story forward than a certain crushing disappointment.

One point deducted for the bugs, which were occasionally irritating but not gamebreaking, one for the could-be-better but could-be-much-worse plot, one for the repetition.

    Game play-
The naval combat is back and improved, it is the most fun thing to do in the game destroying and boarding ships or forts is thematic, enjoying and it actually gets better the more you do it as it is so varied. The combat and parkhour is exactly the same as the last game. Most of the combat is decent however learning how to kill different enemies is hard to get use to some enemies require you to break their defense first, while others require you to counter with a gun or sometimes to stun them; this has the potential to send controllers flying across the room especially when you are outnumbered. The only new weapon is the air rifle which is basically the same as the blowpipe from AC4 BF but it allows you to shoot explosives which are very fun. Freedom of movement is still there but honestly the only new game play mechanic is fighting assassins; they sneak around, hide and you must stay alert to counter them because they can jump out from anywhere to kill you sometimes from above exactly like we can do, it’s a great change to finally verse an assassin and to see what the Templar must deal with.
The missions have you doing a variety of combat, chasing, eavesdropping, sabotage, naval combat and sneaking, allot of it is enjoying as it ties in with the story but is at times frustrating repetitive and bland, especially when you are trying to be sneaky and make a wrong turn and are spotted then you have 6 different guards attacking you which basically destroys the immersion. They have fixed the repetitive missions from the last AC game but the game plays too similarly too Black Flag as a whole. Some side activities are great like saving citizens, harpooning sea animals, and hunting (for crafting) or of course the naval fort activities, fort and liberation activities are the best, you have to liberate assassin hideouts to use shops and access more land. There is little to no hand holding you can choose however you want to do things sneaking through or Rambo style. Allot of the game play mechanics are copied from AC4 Black Flag there is a disappointing feeling of déjà vu, it was fresh and new in the last game not here.

    Story and Characters-
The campaign is very interesting and one of the best in all the series, you start the game and are immediately into the story and action no time is wasted, you play as an assassin for the first 20% of the game. The main difference and one shining point with this AC game is that you change to a Templar due to a horrific event, hunting your former assassin friends. This story grabs your attention really quickly and keeps you wanting more through the events and the fact you get to understand these characters and then knowing you have to hunt them down and kill them. Some plot lines of the story can be a bit cliché and over obvious and in the middle of the game you feel like an errand boy rather than a templar. The characters are done well, though the voice acting and dialogue could be better, the main character is a badass both dark and likeable, maybe the most interesting AC character yet. Only good fans of the series will really care about the modern day element if you are not a fan you could even consider them throw away.

    Presentation-
Everything looks stunning from the icy glaciers to the green forests, graphics are good for old gen and the music is very good. The New York city looks very different from that in AC3 which is great but is still rather familiar. 18th century North America is depicted accurately, it is a joy to see historical people from that time like James Cook and Benjamin Franklin who look and act incredibly accurate.

    Pros-
Amazing story, very likeable character, cool side quests, awesome naval combat, accurate portrayal of the times, great music, beautiful scenery and freedom to explore and move.

    Cons-
Some missions can get stale and unnecessary, feels too similar to AC4 Black Flag, no changes to combat or free running, brings almost nothing new to the franchise and the game is too short.

You don't have to be an AC fan to like this game, good buy 7/10

I can't help but think it could have been expanded on however and, at times, it felt rushed.

The gameplay? Well close your eyes and you will swear you were back in Black Flag but the mechanics are still so much fun that this can be forgiven. The game itself is an enjoyable addition which leads through into the next gen's Assassin's Creed: Unity but it could have been so much more with a story capable of igniting the imagination of a series desperately looking for fresh ideas.

All of the issues aside, if you can overlook the same old Assassin's Creed issues, Rogue is a fine entry in the Assassin's Creed series and wraps up the Kenway story line (and by association the last generation games) well.

Said to be created to meet the requests of the fans I was pessimistic the game would be worthy, I didn’t think this would be the ‘out with a bang’ the game needed to be.

I am a massive, and proud, fan boy of Assassins creed. Personally I don’t think the game has been as fun to play since Brotherhood, but no one should argue that any of the 7 games released for last gen consoles and other formats are anything less that top quality games. Visuals, gameplay, plot and story cannot be questioned, though many, me included, agree Ezio’s titles are still the best.

Assassins Creed Rogue is a prequel to AC3, sequel to AC4 BF, and ends at the start the recently launched next gen AC Unity. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking this title is just something to keep those without next gen console feeling left out and lose touch with the franchise. Rogue doesn’t seem detrimental to following the plot at this stage but is certainly something all fans should experience to getting a fuller picture of the AC universe. Set in the mid-18th century during the French and Indian War around North America, you play as Shay Patrick Cormac, a recent addition to the assassins Brotherhood that find himself questioning the brotherhoods motives and eventually escapes the organization after stealing a guide that supposedly teaches the reader how to decipher another artefact, which could lead to catastrophes around the world. He is then taken in unknowingly by Templars and is soon enough fighting the assassins using the very skills they gave him. You realise the change of team before the character does, suddenly your enemies are laying in wait, in haystacks and on rooftops, ready to jump out and attempt to assassinate you, your new attire displays the Templar cross as if it a brands logo, and if all of that wasn’t a big enough clue your new allies are very clearly British, very well spoken tea and crumpets British. Characters from previous games have secondary roles,  Haytham Kenway the playable characters from AC3s father, Achilles Davenport the same characters mentor, and  Adéwalé from AC4 BF, all come into the plot suitably, the fan service here is well tucked away. The story does its best to slowly slide you into the role of a Templar and before long I started to question who the antagonists truly are, the assassins are the ones digging up ancient artefacts, that seem to do nothing but bring disaster, the Templars are just trying to stop them by any means necessary. This made me consider if I wasn’t being prompted to dislike the Templars by previous games in the series would I have seen them as the baddies? If I had experienced both sides of the war from an uninvolved perspective would I have seen the Assassins as the heroes?

You play in and explore locations in the north Atlantic, New York and the river valleys which is a luscious inviting setting that feels almost tropical after spending massive portions of the game in the frosty north Atlantic. There are countless different land locations you sail between on the ship you acquired early in the game, the Morrigan. You sail to one of the countless undiscovered locations, discover it, board the Morrigan at the location and go searching for collectables, completing missions, freeing hostages, raiding supply camps among a variety of other activities. The smaller locations have a unique charm and can tell their own story if you look for it; Sometimes you’ll come across only a few enemy troops with a few ladies, all drunk dancing, has they fled the armed forces? Sometimes the ground is littered with the bodies of troops clearly, you’ve arrived not long after a battle. As you sail between these locations on missions or simply searching for collectables or discovering new locations to use in the fast travel feature, you will encounter enemy ships and have naval battles. The game almost turns into a 3rd person shooter at these parts; you get into position, aim and shoot. Knock the enemy ships health down low enough and you have the option to board it, and the usual combat style comes back for you to take out an indicated number of the crew and take the rival ship. You earn resources, new crew members, and money as well as the option to either repair the Morrigan or add the captured ship to your fleet to use in naval campaign. Naval campaign is side game playable from certain locations within the main game, think of the assassin’s side game in Brotherhood, but with ships. Send the ships you capture in the main game on missions to earn money. Playing this part of the game is not essential but it’s an effective way to keep money coming in for use elsewhere.

Aside of the familiar collectible collection it is the story and main character that can lift or damn a game. In this case, the twist of the main character is an interesting one, but for me the issue with Shay Patrick Cormac is not that he is not likeable, he is more engaging than Connor for example, but the plot path he is on is quite unsatisfying. Are you going to be cheering as you complete key plot milestones? Well no, not really. The plot was also relatively short. I try to open chests and upgrade as I go, but on this occasion I finished the plot before having reached 50% completion, leaving a host of fetch quests to grind through as desert to a short meal. For Assassin's Creed fans it's not worth missing out, it's just rather repetitive. Expand

Instead of trying for originality, this game just takes the previous game mechanics and attempts to make them better by making many more of such. Like the epic armors found in the previous games, rather than change things up or even make individual items wearable, this just has 3 separate armors to hunt for. It kinda makes you harken back to the days of hunting feathers for a stupid 30 second scene of acknowledgement from your mother. Skip this part if your competitionist spirit allows, as the armors themselves are useless and ugly.

The ship to ship combat is again a reiteration of AC3 and 4, the minor improvements and better armaments just make ship combat a absolute breeze.

Ultimately it comes to a question of to buy, rent, or toss. I'd say rent it you have a AC passion, but otherwise buying AC 3 or 4 would be a better value. With 3 and 4, there was a urge to replay the campaign or see how a play though would progress if you immediately did all the collections and trading, but I can't see myself bothering to do so with this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin’s Creed Rogue: Review

Assassin’s Creed Rogue is based during the 7 year’s war in the mid-18th century with 3 maps to explore consisting of North Atlantic, New York and River Valley.
The main protagonist in this latest instalment of the Assassin’s Creed series is an Irish Assassin turned Templar by the name of Shay Patrick Cormac. After being sent on a Mission by his Assassin Mentors ending with Catastrophic Results, Shay questions the Creed’s methods and motives and ultimately joins the Templars in stopping the Assassin’s plans. Along the way you will take a few periodic breaks outside of the Animus in Abstergo to complete tasks to gain further information to complete Shay’s Story.
Rogue also ties up loose ends by re-introducing the likes of Hatham Kenway and Achilles Davenport from Creed III and Adewale from Black Flag.

The handling of your ship (The Morrigan) is the same and the usual arsenal of Round Shot, Heavy Shot, Mortars and Puckle Guns are still available with new added weapons such as an Oil Slick released from the rear of the ship which can be ignited and the Ram at the front of the ship to destroy Ice Sheets in the Atlantic.
Ship battles of varying scales are still fun and boarding vessels is also still available with the added twist that hunter ships can now also board The Morrigan.
Also the usual side activities of harpooning sea creatures, looting convoys and attacking forts are still there. Control of Kenway’s Fleet is continued on from Black Flag and the Legendary Battles are still there to test your skill and stupidity if you didn’t upgrade The Morrigan.

The main land based missions are focused in New York with its farms and buildings no taller than 2 storeys high and various ports and islands in the North Atlantic and River Valley maps. You still need to talk to your mentors in order to obtain your next mission, the only difference is they are assigned by a Templar rather than an assassin. You can attack camps and loot warehouses as before. A new feature is using eagle vision to listen for whispers that indicate the locations of hidden Assassin’s sent to kill you.
A new side mission called ‘Assassination Interception’ has been introduced where Shay has to identify the Assassin’s target and then intercept numerous assassins nearby before the time limit expires. Shay has the usual Arsenal at his disposal which has been expanded to include the Air Rifle, Grenade Launcher and various projectiles including sleep darts, berserker darts and Poison Gas which shay has a mask which he can equip to manoeuvre without the gas effecting him.

    Graphics
I personally encountered a couple of major glitches where I destroyed a Hunter ship just as it boarded me and the result was the hunter ship melded into The Morrigan and a boarding battle ensued. Also there was an incident where I sailed The Morrigan to the Dock and let go of the wheel before docking which resulted in The Morrigan being able to sail through the island and any other islands. Other than these minor errors (cough cough) the Graphics are as superb as they always are in the Creed Franchise, especially the Naval Campaign.
    Sound
The sound effects of Naval / Land battles are well timed and appropriate, the conversations (albeit boring) are clear and precise and the Shanties sung on The Morrigan whilst sailing are catchy enough to keep one occupied while sailing across to the other side of the map. To be fair a lot of the time I have to subtitle the game as my Wife doesn’t want to hear ‘Fire’ and ‘Captain’s in the drink’ whilst she’s watching Emmerdale.
    Gameplay
Apart from the role reversal, the new weapons for ship and character and some new side missions and collectibles, gameplay remains the same which is OK but variety is the spice of life and perhaps some advancement in landscape and character ability is needed in further instalments. A majority of the game is still going everywhere collecting various items and completing various side missions.
    Overall
Enjoyable but lacking that Wow factor with something new being brought to the game like the previous instalments. Graphics and Sound remain good and the gameplay had some new features to keep us entertained but overall nothing to get me on the red bulls and playing days on end but also not bad enough to make my wife slap me to keep me interested.
    Scores
Graphics – 7/10 – Would be a 9 but those 2 huge graphical errors ruined it.
Sound – 9/10 – The sound is fine as usual, room for improvement maybe.
Gameplay – 7/10 – Needs more than new weapons and side missions.
Overall – 7/10 – Basically an extension to Black Flag to tie up loose ends, still enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This game is copy of black flag, But story is interesting, I like playing as a templar. But gameplay and graphics are same. and because of it I got bored.

I don't know why but this Assassin's creed game just feels like a filler episode. Like it was unnecessary. Overall though it's worth to pick up and play because...........it's Assassin's Creed like hello.

A bit unnecessary. You're not missing out on anything really if you skip this one. While providing some depth to some characters, it's story is quite mediocre, and the actual game (the setting included) is just a full on rehash of Black Flag and 3.

It ends up feeling more like a retrospective than a game in its own right. [Jan 2015, p.80]
