  1. Despite the fact that all the evidence suggests Virtua Tennis is a series stuck in a rut, Virtua Tennis 2009 is still great fun and this Wii version feels different enough that it'll be worth a shot for many.
  2. Grand Slam Tennis was a false start after all, as Sega demonstrates the full potential of Wii MotionPlus.
  3. Virtua Tennis 2009 is an excellent tennis game that offers the same modes and gameplay as the other versions, but the implementation of Wii Motion Plus could be much better.

Good fun; you just have to do some work to get the most enjoyment out of it. [Aug 2009, p.89]
  5. It is very fun to go wild with the Wiimote in Virtua Tennis 2009, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The career mode is very boring and the Wii Motion Plus need some fine tuning. The minigames are however very funny and it is entertaining to play with some friends.
  6. The most realistic tennis game on Wii, the title's depth will be challenging to some but a joy for others.
  7. If you're a Wii-only player without other options, Virtua Tennis 2009 is worth a few swings; otherwise, you might want to rent it and leave it at that.
  8. The Top Spin series, despite its gameplay issues, at least made an effort. Virtua Tennis needs to try much harder if it’s going to regain its title as the preeminent tennis franchise.
  9. Virtua Tennis 2009 is a solid, enjoyable game however lacks the finesse of other Wii tennis titles in the market.

Virtua Tennis's motion control satisfies with a trademark pick-up-and-play experience that nevertheless mirrors the sport to an authentic degree. [Sept 2009, p.127]
  11. As a first attempt at Wii MotionPlus controls this is a good effort, but it's not the definitive one.
  12. Virtua Tennis 2009, as an arcade, is worse than Wii Sports Tennis; as a simulation, is worse than Grand Slam Tennis. Game mechanics were thought to work with a traditional pad, and they were just adapted later to Wiimote and MotionPlus; compared to Grand Slam Tennis, it seems from another era.
  13. VT2009 for Wii makes a new experience in the genre thanks to the Wiimotion Plus add-on. Become one of the best 25 world tennis players with tons of jaggies and poor court details, but with different gameplay choices combining the Wiimote with or without Nunchuck and Wiimotion Plus for all kinds of gamers.
  14. Virtua Tennis is too easy and inconsistent to entertain you for long.
  15. Thanks to MotionPlus, Virtua Tennis 2009 is a good game, with its limits. Lack of innovation starts to be a problem as happened with the other versions but the good number of choices and a good multiplayer could be interesting for someone still loving this sport.

The fact that this is one of the first titles to use MotionPlus shows badly. At times it feels at best poorly implemented and at other points it just feels like it has been tacked on as an afterthought.
  17. It's a pretty lackluster effort overall, and not at all what I was anticipating. I'll stick to my fonder memories of the original, and hope that at some point Virtua Tennis can bring back some of that excitement and fun that I had with the series when it began.

A good tennis game for the Wii. However, I can't say that I got super-excited from the gameplay.

Awful. Do not buy. The graphics are pretty poor. There are frame rate issues which make it difficult to play when using Motion Plus, which is Awful. Do not buy. The graphics are pretty poor. There are frame rate issues which make it difficult to play when using Motion Plus, which is surprising because it's not a pretty game. Animations seem to bear little resemblance to the shot actually being played. The game itself is rather shallow, offering little beyond what you'd get playing Wii Sports Tennis. Motion Plus certainly doesn't help, since what your player does seems bizarrely disconnected from your actual motions - to aim your shots you sometimes have to swing well before the ball even reaches you, and it just feels really strange when you swing and then sit and wait for a second before anything happens. Also, as mentioned, the stuttering frame rate can make it difficult to time shots properly when using Motion Plus. Full Review »
