One of the best Zelda to my taste, as it has a dark atmosphere and very mature to be a Zelda, its strongest points are the gameplay, music and art style, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to enter this incredible world called The Legend Of Zelda.

An excellent game with an even more excellent soundtrack. The whole soundtrack is a tour de force from start to finish, and easily the best soundtrack of any Zelda game made. The soundtrack is full of epic and guttural themes, and even a hauntingly beautiful night field theme.

Alot of people say that it's bad because the start is slow, but for me the start is great being slow since it makes me care more for the characters. The dungeons are one of the best this franchise has ever seen and the OST is truly amazing. The only problem with the game is the ending but overall an amazing game.

Will people stop comparing this to Ocarina Of Time? Having said that, I've enjoyed this game better than OOT. Not as great as Majora's Mask, but certainly worth your money. Shame that it has little replay value, but for the first play through it is a fantastic game.

I agree with most people that this is an awesome game, well at least it's the best on the Wii. My only gripe is that the graphics are so clearly design for the Gamecube that its painful for me to give this a high score. I'm sure the next Zelda will make up for this ones lack of graphical prowess.

There's nothing seriously wrong with the game, which makes me look at everything there could have been to make it even better. Well, one thing is the camera. It's not bad and doesn't really cause any problems, but the fact that there's no other way to manipulate the angle than to go first person or reset it to show Link's back is annoying, especially when it can be done on the GameCube, but not on the Wii version. Aiming firing items with the Wii Remote is neat, as well as being able to aim with the fairy even before using the item. Controlling the sword by swinging the remote, on the other hand, isn't really any more fun than pressing a button, since the swing itself doesn't have anything to do with how link swings his sword. Besides, it can be done accidentally, occasionally resulting in an annoying extra slash at the end of a thrust series. The world is pretty empty. There aren't many memorable characters to meet or quests to complete aside from the main one. Gathering the Poes isn't fun and the prize is absolutely not worth it. Rupees fill up awfully quickly, hearts run out awfully slowly. There is the Magical Armor to help get rid of those Rupees, but that really only makes the game much, much easier again. Please don't kill me, but I absolutely can't see how anyone could give this game ten out of ten. It's not a bad game, by all means no! But it's not perfect either, and it's ridiculous to keep saying it is. I was pondering the rating for quite a long while, and I think I'll drop it to 8. It won't really make a difference, so no matter, right? Expand

I totally agree with Megan's first statement. Everyone is overrating this game because they want it to be a better Zelda game than it was. Don't get me wrong: It was a good game. Don't get me wrong: It was a good game. It just wasn't a GREAT game. It borrowed so many things from Ocarina of Time that it crossed the fine line between homage and repetition. The motion controls for aiming the bow and clawshot were great, but swinging the sword has never felt so unsatisfying. All the bosses lacked the epic feeling of OoTs encounters. The developers saw fit to add size instead of strength to these vast enemies, instead of making them fun or challenging. There are quite a few redeeming qualities of this game that make it good and worth a purchase. The swordfighting on horseback is very fun, and simply riding the horse is fun, too. The dungeons are extremely well detailed and constructed, all of them excellently conveying their elemental themes. The graphics are a vast improvement over OoT, the game this one desperately wants to be. The ultimate reason to purchase this game, however, is the most climactic and satisfying final boss sequence I've ever played. I won't spoil it except to say it is everything you would ever want in Legend of Zelda final showdown. Overall, a good outing for LoZ on the Wii. Let's make the next installment a GREAT one. Expand

I've marked it down though because it keeps giving you clues on how to solve the puzzles before it even gives you a chance to try and solve them. It would have been better if the clues came if and only if you seem to be stuck. This does not spoil the game too much though. In my mind it has great variety and consistent quality all the way through. It also is expansive, however I have not completed it yet. Twilight Princess is a mixed success. Don't read this if you don't want spoilers. Just know that it is a good game that deserves the rating of 8. Just know that it is a good game that deserves the rating of 8. While the gameplay is fun (in most parts), the presentation and the story of the game lacks so much, compared to, let's say, Wind Waker. The scale of the story is epic, but the events that happen in the game do not make sense at all, as if developers forced to to fit in many smaller stories into one tale in order to add in more game time. For an example, all of a sudden you're given the task to take a sword to the Hyrule castle, when suddenly monsters from another dimension come and kidnap the village kids and knock out Link. Yeah ok. This is a likely turn of events...not. When Link wakes up, he is turned into a wolf (that is sufficiently explained later), and you are told that the world is now covered in twilight. Funny thing is, this all happened in matter of days. It would have been more believable if there were some structure to events that happen in this game.

Changing from human form to wolf form adds another dimension to this game. A lot of levels are designed so that you have to solve problems in two completely different ways to proceed, one way when you are human and another when you are wolf. While this is executed fairly well and not a drag at all, it conflicts with the flow of the story, and besides, you will sooner or later realize all you are doing is digging or using Midna to jump. Creativity seems like a big issue for Nintendo these days.

Some temples are a drag. Water temple was especially boring. Fire temple utilizes iron boots so that you can stick to magnetic surface, (i.e. ceilings and walls), and when the entire temple demands the use of these boots that make you walk really slow, I tend to get impatient. Desert temple was my favorite. It really uses both wolf form and human form to full extent, and the mini tasks you are given in it are a fun way to proceed in a temple.

Twilight Princess features one of the most remarkable video game characters ever. Yes, Midna is a mischievious creature that turns out to be the Twilight Princess. Her role as Link's guide worked well and gave the game what the small organization it had. Malo the baby boy is also memorable. However, there is not enough interaction between Link and other characters. Most of people in Hyrule city you can't even talk to. They are just background objects basically.

Overall, I feel the quality of the game goes up a notch as the game proceeds, so I believe its makers eventually got the formula down after some trials and errors in the beginning. I just don't understand the awkward story in the beginning, why couldn't they go back and fix it? After all, they re-rendered the entire twilight dimension during development phrase... a little tweak would have made this game great. As it is now, it deserves an 8, and is worth your time most likely.

I agree that this is a good game, maybe even great, but it just feels like the formula is getting a little stale. Maybe I got a little too juiced up with all the "next Ocarina" hype, but the game felt like a letdown to me, despite the fact that I'm giving it a 9. I don't feel like I can give it anything less, but it's kind of a deflated, exasperated 9, more, like an 8.7. So in the interest of balancing out all the fanfare, I'll focus on what I didn't like: The plot of this game has a lot of issues, especially pertaining to Zelda's involvement in the story. There are also some bizarre, rpoorly realized cutsequences about halfway through the game-- you'll know them when you see it. The first two hours of the game, up until you beat the first real dungeon, are simply abysmal. The thing I hated the most about Ocarina was the slow, unskippable tutorial-esque tasks in the Kokiri Village, and TP has managed to extend all of that introductory gameplay ad nauseum. The last two dungeons are very, very short, and the ending feels kind of slapped together. In the last dungeon there is a big cutsequence that shows some of your allies coming to your aid, but when the scene is over, they aren't there and are never heard of or mentioned again. That brings me to NPC interaction. It's fairly static in this game. Once you beat an area of the game, there is rarely any reason to go back and talk to its inhabitants. The reward system is also quite askew. By default, any difficult task in the game is rewarded by giving you rupees, but you can only carry 300 initially, and there quickly becomes just about nothing to spend it all on. Later you're able to cary 600, and if you complete a very long an arduous collection process, you're able to hold 1000. During this collection process, you're rewarded with more rupees. The hardest side-quest in the game, a gauntlet of enemies you must defeat with limited health supply will reward you with more opportunities to get health. But if you can beat the gauntlet of enemies, you won't ever need the health reward for anything else since it's the hardest set of battles in the game. Many people have mentioned the wii control scheme for swordfighting feels tacked on, so I won't go into that. Nor will I go into Nintendo's bizarre choice to continue to use MIDI in 2006, except to say that a lot of people have defended it by saying that it enables "dynamic music".In reality, Zelda doesn't do anything with its midi soundtrack that couldn't be accomplished with a multitrack recording of an orchestra.. Those are my main beefs. I'm sure they will be edited down :). Expand

To fans it'll be the best game of the yet, to others it'll probably be in your top ten. It's just too bad the game doesn't push the production limits or gameplay, as it'll be a long time till the next Zelda and Nintendo might be long gone by then (I hope not). I also felt there was a lot of obvious filler in the game such as the owl statues across Hyrule. A button to press for the sword would have been more concise, in my opinion. I really wish there was another way for the camera to rotate besides Z-targeting. However, this game still is one of my favorite Zelda games. The transition from human to wolf was short and smooth. The score is amazing and the Arbiter's Grounds and Snowpeak Ruins temples take the cake with 3-D Zelda temples. The final boss was truly epic, but kind of easy. If the bosses and overall game were harder, Twilight Princess could have been the best. The hardest part was the cave of ordeals and it is really boring and merely challenging (took me 3 tries). This game has a lot of strengths - the visuals in the game are excellent. While the game is not the best thing ever graphically, it has a very good style to it, particularly the darker sections of the game, where the design is the strongest. Midna, your ally, has an amazing design, and Link's wolf form is quite cool.

The wolf sections of the game are the only real new addition to the game, and they are fun - they aren't long enough to get annoying in their simplicity, and the theme of travelling through the darkness is quite fun.

The parts where you play as Link are very standard for games of this type - you can't really jump, you use your tools to progress through the levels, and combat is pretty basic.

The major ways this game falls down are a fewfold.

Firstly, it is too easy. Most of the game is pretty easy. I like to die periodically to make me feel challenged, but in this game, I didn't die even once. The enemies were not interesting enough to fight, and it was only the very rare fight, in the very end of the game or the optional side-dungeon, which felt even remotely challenging.

Secondly, it often felt a bit too linear. While all the Zelda games are fairly linear, a lot of them disguised it fairly well; this game does not do so, removing the illusion of choice for the most part. Moreover, the Hookshot, previously a fun way to explore, has its equivalent in this game be much worse for the random exploration the Hookshot was good for.

All in all, it is a solid title, and worth playing, but it'd be nice to feel like I was playing a new Zelda game, not a game which I played on the N64.

The over-world is big, but seems so empty. The second from last boss (Zant) just runs through previous bosses that you have faced, which is disappointing. Quite a lot of the heart pieces are found in dungeons, which could have been used to fill out the over-world more. Even with its flaws, I still enjoyed the temples and bosses. It is a fun and enjoyable game. Recommended. Expand

Not the best Zelda game, but it does have some serious competition in that field!

Graphically it could be better - the Wii has proven itself in this area since - but for a launch title/late Gamecube game, it looks very nice. Nintendo have rarely repeated a graphical style for Zelda games, and this is another new style for them. It lacks the character of Wind Waker before it, but works well with what it does.

The adventure and story are very exciting, as you'd expect, with several new elements to mix with the standard swordplay, slingshot and everything else you know will be in a Zelda game.

The controls are a weak point in my opinion. Mapping items to the D-pad makes it awkward to select them. Waving the remote to initiate an attack makes the game more tiring than it would otherwise be. Aiming projectiles is a real benefit though with the remote. Otherwise the controls are functional, but I would prefer to be able to use a Classic Controller or Gamecube controller. Of course, you COULD play the GC version on your Wii (or GC) but we're reviewing the Wii version here.

Playing TP again has really got me excited for Skyward Sword. I just hope I manage to complete it in the next 5 days so I can move on to SS ;)

An excellent adventure, and easily the best Wii game to date (one of few good wii games, that is). Plays pretty much as any other zelda game, the changes lies in the details. On the downside, the game is quite ugly and doesn't really benefit from the motion control.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great atmosphere and artistic style
    + Good dungeon design
+ Most well-made character-driven story in Zelda still.

    - Easy all-around, and boss battles are consistently let-downs for anyone who's beaten Ocarina of Time or like.
    - The size of the world doesn't balance out very well with the content it holds. It lacks life and is generally poorly realised
    - The final bossfight is a huge let-down. It feels downright mediocre and tacked-on.
    - The story falls apart towards the last section, and the payoff could've been a lot better.

Overall, this is still a very memorable Zelda game, but even after my first playthrough when I was only 12 years old, I was disappointed at the final section of the game and I did notice how simplistic and downright cakewalks the boss-battles were, particularly the second and third ones. The final boss just felt hamfisted and honestly I don't know if Nintendo were rushed or just didn't feel the fire for it. It was a huge missed opportunity and it highly diminished another "antagonist's" role in the game.

8/10: A very good game in its own right, but maybe not a very good Zelda game.

This is a good game, no doubt about it at all, but it isn't perfect. It makes excellent use of the formula that many Zelda players are familiar with. My main complaints would be the difficulty, which is a huge step down from Ocarina (the game it is obviously taking a lot of inspiration from), the bosses are easy to beat and you may not get a chance to see the game over screen until later in the game, my other complaint would be item usage. I doubt that I am the only one who looks forward to the items in a Zelda game, what was then disappointing was normally an item became basically redundant after temple that you found it in.

That however is most of my complaints out of the way. the major place that I personally found the game excelled hugely where the temples. The dungeon layout in Twilight has clearly been well thought out and designed and though they are not the most challenging dungeons in a Zelda game you will find yourself absorbed in them from start to finish.

The game looks fantastic especially when you remember that it was a GC port, Link looks as heroic as ever and the enemies look equally nasty. Though the game doesn't look anywhere near as dark as Majora's Mask (although it clearly tries) it still gives off an air of depression and darkness that contrasts hugely against the light hearted adventure of its predecessor The Wind Waker.

With regards to gameplay this game fits in with all the other 3D Zeldas, solid controls that lead to an enjoyable adventure and satisfying combat. Item usage with the Wiimote excels with regards to weapons like the bow, where all you have to do is aim at the the screen and fire away. I found sword combat a little strange, a flick of the wrist to make Link swing his sword, it wasn't a horrible experience but if the developers where not prepared to go the whole way with motion control then it seems a shame they didn't just leave the sword aligned to a button, it is not a big problem at all and certainly doesn't make the game less enjoyable, it is just something that possibly should have had more thought put into it.

I think Link's wolf form is something that you will either love or hate. It is fairly basic but works for the story. If you find that you enjoy it then it will be a nice treat to enter the form as and when it happens. If you find you don't enjoy it then it is going to be something that you will absolutely dread and may ruin portions of the game for you. Personally I enjoyed it, not as much as playing as Link but it was okay, I can see the good points behind it, breaking up the story into easy to distinguish chapters however more development could have gone into this rather large section of the game. Again I am not complaining but merely commenting on an area of the game that perhaps didn't quite live up to its potential.

Overall this is an excellent game that veteran Zelda players will enjoy though possibly completely with minimal effort, and if you are new to the series then this is an great way to get into the series and not find yourself overly frustrated.

On my first playthrough of the game, I had never experienced Ocarina of Time, one of the most immersive experiences in video game history. While Twilight Princess seemed innovative in design, I didn't realize that nearly every aspect of the story had been borrowed from Ocarina. It seems as though Ocarina was a revolutionary template that Twilight Princess uses, rather than builds upon. That being said, does the game hold its own in the Zelda universe as a stand alone adventure?
The story will sound familiar to anyone who has played a Zelda game before. Link, the Hero of Time, must save the land of Hyrule from certain demise by defeating the evil Ganondorf, saving Princess Zelda, and obtaining the Master Sword. Only this time, the twist is that the land is being covered in a darkness known as the Twilight Realm. This world collides with Hyrule, and Link must traverse between worlds to save them both from Ganon's rage. Not only does Link transform into a wolf in the Twilight Realm, he also meets a Navi-esque companion named Midna, who aids Link in his quest. Midna is the best part of the experience, giving the game some life with snarky commentary, a definite change in attitude as the story progresses, and a genuinely heartbreaking farewell.
However, Midna is perhaps the only investing part of the game. The rest seems just as lifeless and depressing as the Twilight Realm itself. Hyrule Field is huge in scope and impressive to explore, but there's practically nothing worthwhile to look for, feeling more of a wasted opportunity than an enticing overworld full of mystery. The dungeons suffer from a lack of ingenuity, following a cookie-cutter layout of finding keys to open doors, and offering little excitement in terms of swordplay or puzzle-solving. Even Link fails in this regard. Although it's hard to give a voiceless protagonist personality, the prior Links all were memorable in their own ways. Twilight Link gives off a feeling of perpetual moodiness, making it seem that he isn't even enjoying the game he was put in. Add all of that to a beautiful score hindered by its lack of orchestra and dull graphics that contrast the energized colors of the previous games, and one realizes how this attempt at making the game darker limits both creativity and fun for the player.
With all of these flaws, however, there's no denying that Twilight Princess is a good game. Fighting is very fun when done right, and doing somersaults and rolls make battling hordes of enemies feel fresh and fast-paced. While the dungeons do suffer from repetitiveness, the boss battles almost entirely make up for them. There are too many memorable bosses to count, such as one ingenious fight with two parts where one must use the physics of an item to take down a massive skeleton. All of these fights make up for the lack of creativity present throughout the rest of the game. And, while the darker tone does have its downsides, it is nice to see Nintendo try and put a darker spin on the classic franchise, especially in the cutscenes. Fighting on horseback on a bridge to save the life of a child is both thrilling and unique, and is one of several moments that made me want to stand up and cheer.
Therefore, while there are many faults with the game, Twilight Princess pulls through with its atmosphere, boss battles, and, most importantly of all, the addition of Midna. While it borrows heavily from the past and contributes very little to the present, the game is an important stepping stone for Zelda games in the future.

And we don't have an annoying companion for once, Midna is actually useful and a decent character in the story other than a plug-in to frustrate you throughout the story.

I really missed the precision of using a normal controller, the combat in Wind Waker on the GameCube was more fun and responsive.
I also found that the joystick was not as accurate as those on the controller. It made platforming very annoying at times.

The characters were great in this game, I especially took a liking to Midna. The wolf form was awesome too. I felt like this game had some darker parts to it, it reminded me a little of Majora's Mask - I loved those aspects.

Although fun, the bosses were way too easy. The last one was a joke, he wasn't very tough at all lol.
I really enjoyed most of the dungeons, minus that f*****g Sky City, I've never been so frustrated in my life. I rushed through that whole place as quickly as possible. That dungeon is the worst I've ever been in, it p****d me off way more than the Water Temple...
I was really looking forward to then Sky City too, I expected something... Cooler.
But it was plain, boring, and the noise of those Ooccoo's drove me spare.

I loved the throwbacks to then older games though, such as certains characters and songs.
The boss, enemy and character designs were great. Loved the twilight creatures.
I thought the new weapons and stuff were pretty cool too.

I played this on my Wii U which looked WAY better than the Wii. Wqs very happy with the upscale. :)

Overall, there were some annoying parts, but it's still a fantastic game that's really worth playing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was between a 7 and a 8. I gave the game an 8 due to the solid moment-to-moment game play. There are 3 main reasons why I can't give the game a higher score.
    1. The pacing is off. It's not just the overlong tutorial section where you couldn't skip any of it. It's how the main quest pads out its length between dungeons during the first half of the game. Mostly due to the forced Wolf-Link sections that don't evolve over time. The pace does get better after you get the master sword, with the exception of a dull quest here and there.
    2. The story is unfocused. It can't decide if Link or Midna is the main character. A lot of the story talks of how Link is all important, but whenever a central character appears or the main plot is brought up, MIdna is usually the focus. Zelda, Zant, and Ganondorf barely acknowledge Link most of the time. It would be cool if this was a story of how even if you're not the main hero, you're still important, but they still play the "Hero's Journey" aspect of Link's character straight. It also doesn't help that Midna herself is really annoying. She starts out as a brat, bossing Link whenever she doesn't belittle him or say how awful everyone but her is. Then she does a 180 and acts like she's Link's best friend with no character development. Definitely my least favorite of any of Link's companions
    3. The dungeons/boss fights are generally disappointing. These are perhaps the weakest set of bosses and dungeons in any 3D Zelda game. Dungeons drag on and overstay their welcome, which is weird since they aren't difficult, the dungeons are just over-bloated. With the exception of Snowpeak Ruins and Arbiter's Grounds (when it's not a watered-down rehash of Ocarina of Time's Forrest Temple) there isn't a dungeon that I would want to do again. The bosses are too easy. A lot of them have a second phase that's always easier than the first. When they don't do that they artificially extend the fight time with tactics like waiting for an npc to do an action so Link can attack.
There are some other nitpicks like how I don't like the color pallet or how the over world is the least interesting in any Zelda game, but those are just that, nitpicks.
So yeah you think I hate this game and are bewildered as to why I gave it an 8/10. Well despite those flaws, there's still a good game at the very core of it. Like I said, moment-to-moment game play is great. The items, while sparsely used, add some variety to the game. The music is exceptional. Combat is fun, even if some of the extra moves aren't useful outside of certain fights. The side quests are mostly great. While I don't like the choice to fill the game with dull colors, the art design of the environments, characters, and enemies is pretty cool (with the exception of the Gorons). While Epona was underutilized, ridding her and being able to use the sword on horseback was fun. It's weird everything outside of the main quest/dungeons/bosses I really like while the actual main quest is kind of a mixed bag. Twilight Princess might be my least favorite 3D Zelda title, but even then, Zelda at it's "worse" is still better than most games in the market. I would still recommend the game to anyone.

Good points: 1.The dungeons are for the most part classic Nintendo ingenuity, with perfectly crafted puzzles and some really impressive boss fights. 2. Combat is well executed and feels like it takes what previous 3d Zelda games have done and polishes the mechanics to a finer lustre. Bad points now: 1. The overworld map is too large. Maybe that sounds like an odd complaint, but it just feels too empty with a lack of hidden secrets or enemies, so that traversing it just feels like killing time rather than exploring, 2. Its just no fun being the wolf. It feels like a punishment, having all your items removed, and having the finely tuned combat controls replaced with the limited and sluggish collect-em-up sections that constitute the twilight/wolf sections of the game. Maybe it's all the wolf parts or the unusual Ocarina of Time butt-kissing, but it's something strange and I never plan on playing this game again. But I will be fair because I remember the first time playing it was like playing Ocarina of Time for the first time. And that will stay with me for a long time. Expand

Don't get me wrong, Twilight Princess is a fantastic game and I loved it to pieces, but why I give it a lower score is because I feel it was copy and pasted from Ocarina of Time. When I originally played the game, I gave it a 10/10, but playing Ocarina, it made me appreciate it less. I think it's better than Ocarina, but still it's disappointing. Besides that it's

Twilight Princess is a tough one for me. Don't get me wrong it's a good game and does a lot right, but it has a lot wrong too. It doesn't do anything horrible, but it has some annoying parts to say the least. Let's start off with the good. I enjoyed pretty much all of them, except the snow dungeon. My favorites have to be the Arbiters Grounds, Temple of Time, and City in the Sky. TheTwilight Princess is a tough one for me. The dungeons are definitely the most important part of the Zelda series for me, and this game pretty much nails all of them. While the dungeons are great, it's pretty much worse in every aspect with the other 3D Zelda's. For example the developers made the world big, but there was nothing in it. It just felt empty to me. My biggest problem with the game though is that the stuff between dungeons was just really boring. I was also never motivated to do any of the side quests. With a lot being said it really hits hard with some of the stuff in the game, but I can't deny that it has a lot of flaws. That being said I give Twilight Princess a 7.5/10 and a B-. Expand

I seriously don't get it. How do people hate Skyward Sword but like this game? This game is literally 5 hours of the tedious garbage from Skyward Sword in between every single dungeon in the game. The only saving grace for this game is some incredible dungeons and a beautiful soundtrack.

I had hoped that being a Wii game, it would feel very interactive, but it doesn't. The sword actions don't mimic what you do with the Wiiremote and the game is lesser for it. What makes the Wii stand out from the crowd is the potential for truly interactive gaming experience, but this game can be played with the merest flicks of the wrist, which bear little resemblance to the on screen action, whilst lounging on the settee. PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD!

zant was a huge letdown! they built him up to be this evil, demonic, bad guy and what happens at the end? he ends up being a kook! it just totally destroys the whole build up of zant! and why did they throw in ganondorf at the end! the plot was going good with zant being the main villian! it felt like nintendo ran out of ideas with zant and was, like," yeahhhhh..... lets just throw in ganondorf!" also the temples were not immersive, the soundtrack was abysmal, and the twilight realm was uninteresting! so the characters are trapped in an alternate realm and they dont know about it? so basically theyre just continuing life as it is and their life is not in danger? so what? hyrule did not feel like it was in any immediate danger and nobody was aware of it, and nobody was bothered by it honestly! so why bother trying to save hyrule? no body's life is in danger or at risk!

nowwww ill talk about the good aspects of twilight! exploration was fun to a certain extent, nice graphics, some interesting puzzle mechanics here and there, variety of destinations to go to, annnnnnd some good enemy battles sprinkled throughout the game and uhhhhh, a fairly engaging story butttt uhhhhhh.... yeah thats it

The story is stale and takes nearly ten hours to pick up genuine speed, the world is vast yet somehow vasly uninteresting, it's much, much easier than previous "Zeldas" (though, to be honest, this is the current trajectory of most Nintendo-developed licenses these days), and everything from the graphics to the locales feels awfully dated it did even when it debuted in 2006. Since the above would suggest I'm just ragging on the game, I'd like to mention aspects I really enjoyed: catching bugs and bringing them to that weird chick, the hilarious plot/dialogue during the Snowpeak section, every single weapon old and new (this may actually be my favorite thing), certain 'cinematic' sequences, and Midna, who's infinitely less annoying than other sidekicks in the "Zeldas." I think part of is my own stupidity makes the backtracking and bug hunting more difficult than it should be, but I nevertheless put this as warning to anyone who gets annoyed by the same stuff.

Update: I've finished the game, and I have some stuff to add. I really appreciate how they make sure every dungeon feels unique with their own atmosphere, especially towards the end, but they do that by giving you a new gadget in each dungeon, and some gadgets are almost only used for that dungeon. So it's very likely you'll forget how a gadget works or what puzzles it can solve when the game requires you to use it again in a different dungeon. So if you're feeling stuck, don't be afraid to use the walkthrough, because it really is the game's fault for giving you 15 different items and then ask you to use one after not having used it for the past 5 dungeons. Also, if you have a chance, play it on a GameCube, because goddamn is the wii remote bad. I can't tell you how many times I got stuck just because I forgot to press the camera button so I could look around and see the thing that was needed to progress. Another problem that was alleviated by a walkthrough.

The lack of secret side quests was also damaging to the game. The major killer of this game for me was that the most awesome area and character in the game will not be returning in any sequel(Or so the ending indicated). Midna beats the hell out of Navi in every way and then poofs forever at the end. For one, the storyline. Link's friend gets kidnapped, the forest gets covered in Twilight, link turns into a wolf, meets a stupid creature, and then has to collect tears of light to remove the Twilight. Then, you do that two more times. Then, you battle Zant and then out of nowhere, Ganondorf comes in. For being traditional, this game barely has Ganondorf. Could it be more linear? It is impossible to do anything out of order? Despite there being no obstacle between the forest and Hyrule field, Midna does not allow you to leave until you beat the Forest Temple. The world and towns are linear as hell. Kakariko is not a town, it's just a linear set of nearly completely inaccesible buildings. Same with Castle Town. The dungeons are linear than ever too. Once you enter a Twilighted area, you are stuck until you get the dumb tears of light. The people are retarded. They look Wierd, they say dumb things and act dumb, some are just like robots, and overall there is just no development. What is so great about collecting all these useless items. You get the item in the dungeon, you use it, you use it for about one thing, and then it's no longer used. You get the slingshot and use it for the first half hour only. You get a whistle to call your horse near the end of the game. What the hell? You spend trillions of rupees for magic armor that runs on rupees. What the hell? Other than the useless magic armor, there is nothing to spend the rupees on. Rupees are everywhere in Twilight Princess. But there is nothing to spend them on and if you can't carry anymore and you open a chest with a rupee, then it'll say let's put it back. It's annoying because if you may not remember that that chest just has rupees and you could come and open it again and just get the same message. The bosses are painfully easy. Zant was a horrible disappointment. Even Ganondorf was. Only half a heart when he hits you? The soundtrack is incredibly weak with the exception of a few tracks. There's barely any Sidequests. Barely any mini games. Midna is Navi but rude. The world is empty. Everything looks generic. Bleh. The only positives are being a wolf at times, the dungeons while linear are really good, the bosses while easy are pretty cool, horse back combat, new swordplay mechanics and not much more. That is the most frustrated and annoyed with a game that I have ever been in my almost 40 year life. It was unnecessary lack of functionality in the controls that almost made me throw the thing out the window. That made me wary of further annoyances and jaded me significantly. Second, the 3rd person moving camera. Just gotta love being attacked from offscreen and not being able to do anything about it. I do not like dying because of the camera. That's a deal breaker in any game. Tragic to have to pan a game with so much beauty but the fact I'm angry while writing this has to mean something. Expand

The Ocarina of Time is quite rightly regarded as one of the cornerstones of gaming and at the time it certainly raised the bar for the 3d action adventure genre. Perhaps it was the fact that The Wind Waker received a lot of criticism upon its release (I personally really enjoyed it) but for the final GameCube outing Nintendo decided to go back to the template used in their N64 classic. Unfortunately eight years later much of that template just feels dated. Travelling from dungeon to dungeon is a specific order just isn't able to hold my attention anymore and, while most are intelligently designed, none could exactly be considered original. The same could also be said of Twilight Princesses combat system which is lifted almost straight from The Wind Waker, yet strangely doesn't feel quite as fluent or satisfying.

If I’d never played a Zelda title before I’m sure I would have found plenty to enjoy in Twilight Princess but as it is I couldn't help as though I’d seen everything it has to offer more than once over the last decade.

When I first got the game I played it for a few hours and thought it was really good. But as the game goes on it gets really bad. Twilight Princess is very boring and repetitive, and full of way too many puzzles. Video games are supposed to be fun, this game is not fun at all. If you love puzzles you'll love this game, but if you don't and you're just looking for fun then this game is not for you.

This game is my least favourite Zelda game, it has too many flaws to be enjoyable. I didn't enjoy the fact that items were only used in the dungeon they were found in (the spinner in arbitrer's grounds for example). The story is okay, the soundtrack is disappointing (it's not even orchestrated), the graphics have aged less well than Wind Waker's graphics, and the Wolf Link sections are long, tedious and boring. Also, the Boss battles are extremely easy and the AI is stupid, and for a game that's supposed to be "more mature" that's a letdown. The overworked may be huge, but it's empty. I'd rather play a game with a small but interesting overworld than spend hours crossing an emptying boring overworld. Do yourself a favour and skip this game, play Skyward Sword, or Ocarina of Time, those are much better. Expand

Why nintendo, why. why couldn't the wii be more than an overclocked gamecube with a new controller and a higher price tag? look at assassins creed, a game that actually looks like a incredible new genre all it's own. why can't zelda break any new ground? because it's on the wii. Nintendo...you can't cater to both adults and children... Overall, its a great addition to the series, but if anyone from Nintendo ever reads this please... please... PLEASE make a game for people over 10. Somehow I have flashbacks to that green guy that hoovered over Fred Flinstone (zazu?) in the later episodes. What were you thinking? MAN this could have been a great game... instead its a good game somehow ahead of its time. Expand

Dont buy this game, if you are older than 10. Graphics=2, Controls=2, Story=3, Sound= What sound?, No voice acting, incredibly boring boss fights. (No idea, how this game managed to create all that hype, guess Nintendo is investing a lot in getting favorable reviews instead of investing in hardware and games)

An excellent addition (and homage to "Ocarina") to the franchise, and you'll have an enormous amount of fun playing it from start to finish. Get over the fact that the Wii's hardware is simply not as powerful as the other next-gen machines and get into the fact that Twilight Princess is one of the best games you'll play this year.
  2. It truly is, in my opinion, the best and longest Zelda ever made. With nearly 70 hours of playtime committed and more still to do, I cant think of a better experience or value this holiday season.

Truly fantastic. It's not a reinvention of the genre like Ocarina was -- but it's much better, because it takes all its predecessors' raw ideas, perfects them, and creates an experience that's at once new and familiar. It's rare to find a launch game that truly justifies the purchase of a new console, but this is precisely that.
