This is not a hd remake we wanted in the vein of Wind Waker, but it's still an amazing game overall. The textures are cleaned up but the characters models remain unchanged and you can tell its not a current gen game. Alas, if you've never played it before this is the definitive version of the game, but if you have you won't get much new out of this if you still have your wii or gamecube copy

Make no mistake, i loved Twilight princess, and that alone got it a 8. Unless my eyes are messed up, all i noticed was enhanced lighting and blinding bloom at sunsets.

I quite honestly just got this game because i only have it for Gamecube... and the fact that i think that the original is pretty much the peak of LOZ titles.

Twilight Princess is among my favorite Zelda games. To say that the original hadn't aged well would be quite the understatement. Make no mistake that this is not a full on remake. You are still seeing the original character models and geometry with a fresh coat of paint. This is especially apparent when looking at Wolf Link. His paws still lack definition.

Some of the original game's issues still remain but that is more due to the limitation of the hardware at the time. Hyrule Field feels a bit barren compared to more contemporary games. Going from place to place generally doesn't feel too exciting. Like MGSV's world, the game is at its best once you get to those dungeons and points of interest. Twilight Princess is a huge game which can easily take over 100 hours to find every piece of heart (5 per container), bug, etc. The dungeons are among the best in the series and boast some incredible boss fights even if they are a bit on the easy side. If you are looking for a greater challenge however? The Wolf Link Amiibo opens up an additional cave of trials. The Ganondorf amiibo unlocks double the damage. The game also allows you to play on Hero mode from the beginning.

The most immediate benefit of this remake is the added detail and texture work on the character models. Link and Zelda's clothes have a noticeable cloth weave pattern. The enhanced detail really pops though it makes me wish the same attention had been paid to other areas. Wolf Link's fur still seems a bit flat. As I stated earlier his feet also lack definition. The other long standing criticism is that the game's first hour is tedious. It does set up Link's relationship with some of the characters and makes it a bit of a more personal tale.

Further improvements include easier inventory management (courtesy of the gamepad), A reduction in the number of tears of twilight needed. Like them or hate them, motion controls have been removed for this outing. (I actually enjoyed them). One thing also struck me during my first few hours. Epona is actually pretty clunky in the way she controls. I couldn't remember her being this unwieldy in the original. I also occasionally got stuck on odd bits of geometry.

For those who haven't played Twilight Princess this is a fantastic way to spend your time leading up to the release of Zelda U. Midna is the best companion in the series. Twilight Princess is a darker story as Zelda games go, but perhaps not as dark as Majora's Mask.

In the end Twilight Princess HD is an excellent HD remaster with a few minor annoyances. However they never ultimately detract from what is an otherwise game.

I tried to get into it a couple times and just gave up. I wont be playing this game again.

    Any Complaints?

The game didn’t seem bad but I just didn’t care for the gameplay. It just seemed the like game was just bouncing from puzzle to puzzle to puzzle and I just got burnt out doing the same things over and over again.

How many hours did you play it?

I played it for about 8 hours. Which in my opinion is certainly enough time to decide if you like a game or not.

One of my favorite characters are Midna who is a bit annoying at start but slowly throughout the game, once you learn a little bit more about her past you'll find that she has a reasonable backstory which'l make you like her a bit more.

So yes, I hope that answers the question enough, the textures are a lot more clean and the gameplay is outstanding! My only issue is that the character models all look the same. Overall, Twilight princess to me is truly a masterpiece in its own unique way.

The game is defintely great but suffers from a few flaws. Even though riding is a major part of the experience, the controls for it are terrible. Most of the time I instead used the wolf form to travel trough Hyrule. The story itself is good but suffers a bit from the lack of voice acting the series is known for up until "Breath of the Wild". But my biggest problem with it is that it takes quite some time to get to the meat of the game.

Despite all these flaws this, mostly the gameplay and sometimes hard puzzles are what elevates Twilight Princess HD into greatness. The boss battles, especially the final battle are fun and challenging. The puzzles are frustrating at times but the satisfaction after solving them is worth it.

The visuals are good but not great. You can tell that the original is over a decade old. But that doesn't take away from the overall experience.

It took me about 50 hours to beat the game and it was definitely worth it.

Twilight princess HD uses the combat from the Gamecube version(Which IMO the Gamecube version was the superior one) instead of the mirrored Wii verison. In 10 years the combat mechanics still hold up really well i.e the hidden moves are still really fun to use. HELPFUL TIP turn of the motion controls when you get the chance using the gamepad to aim is a pain and doesnt hold up well, it makes it easier just to turn them off from the get go.

The graphics in this game are good not the upgrade I myself was expecting but you can see a noticeable difference when it comes to the textures, they're alot cleaner and more detailed. But they are still low polygon models so dont expect them to hold up on close inspection. My one complaint with the remaster is the shadows what ever light engine they used for this game is still good but it doesnt cast natural shadows when using soft light i.e candles which makes you think "hey this doesn't seem right to me" but it doesn't break emmersion

Overall im satisfyed with this HD remake if you loved it 10 years ago you will love it again

That being said, I am going to address the HD remake compared to the original, as I've seen some comments here by people who feel the graphics aren't as good as they hoped or as good as the Wind Wakers remake. This is absolutely not true, and I'll be happy to explain why. Let me start by saying I have spent well over 150+ hours with this game on the Wii. I bought a new HDTV at the time the original came out just to get as much of the graphics out of it as I could. I spent more time tweaking the graphics of the original than anyone else, many hours, because it was in such a low resolution that you needed to tweak some settings to get the best picture. This HD remake however has by far exceeded my expectations. The WW remake was simply cleaned up and put into a higher resolution. This HD remake not only has that going for it, but has also had many other upgrades including the shadows, and textures that have been upgraded, which look as close to current gen graphics as you can get, while staying true to the game. The thing is, you really need a 4K/UHD TV to really "appreciate" what they have done with the graphics and textures in this game. I have studied the graphics pretty closely and they are simply amazing. Rocks looks real, grass in the field looks amazing, little details on the character models have been added to them to give them a more detailed look. The game simply looks BEAUTIFUL on a high quality or 4K TV set. I am finally able to play this game with the graphics I've always wanted and knew it was capable of, while and the same time it stays true to itself, and I couldn't be happier. Other added features that I feel are worth mentioning are:

+ Combat controls and camera control are simply great
+ New menus for items, the map, and the game options look great
+ Amiibo support and the little cool effects added (i.e. - Ganon's evil laugh when you use him to take double damage, I love this)
+ Ability to play the original gamecube version AND the mirrored Wii version in Hero Mode (A must!)
+ Many other tweaks and fixes - (Starting wallet size, bringing the light tear collection down from 16 to 12, etc)

This HD remake of TP was simply done perfectly. You couldn't ask for better. This is an amazing game with beautiful updated graphics, and a MUST buy for anyone with, or without a Wii U system. 10+!

Indeed, it's far more pleasant to experience Twilight Princess without the blurry mess that the Wii/Gamecube versions look like on HD TV's; and considering it as a remaster, the work done is acceptable. Although , compared to what Nintendo did to the remastered versions of Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, i can't help feeling a bit disappointed.
While textures are far sharper and slightly more detailed, everything looks the same. They could've add some more geometry to characters and scenarios to smooth their block looks, and improve lighting effects a bit.
However, if the visual improvements didn't blew me away, i enjoyed the new additions to the controls. It's something done before with Wind Waker HD, but it's worth mentioning how comfortable is having the map always open on the screen of the gamepad and been able to manage the inventory without the need to pause. it's also possible to transform into wolf/link just by pressing a touch screen button, without the need to talk to Midna. That's some little nice touches that make the gameplay more dynamic and enjoyable.
Speaking about the game itself, apart from the technical department. I would say that inside the dungeons, Twilight Princess is absolutely fantastic! In my opinion, one of the best levels collection among the 3D versions of Zelda and they're the biggest reason to play it, because outside them...oh dear, it's not so great. It seems like two different teams did the game, one very talented did the dungeons and other not so talented the outdoor stuff.
The overworld is big but uninspired and not so fun to explore; supporting characters lack charisma and empathy; and sometimes there's some serious pacing issues caused by too much tutorials and fetch quests, especially at the beginning. God, the start of this game is a torture! If you're not a Zelda fan or is not a persistent person, there's some probability to give up on this before reaching the first level in 2-3 hours of gameplay.
So, in the end, i would recommend it mostly to Zelda fans who never played this game before or are feeling nostalgic about it. Non Zelda fans or people who are trying the series for the first time, try Ocarina of Time, A link to the Past, A link between Worlds or even Wind waker which is available on Wii U.

    1. Firstly, addressing the graphics, I find them quite pleasing for what they are, and even though it's been a long time, character models and textures etc. are exactly as I would have imagined them to be having played many HD collections on the PS3. It doesn't match up to the graphical prowess that Wind Waker HD brought to be sure, however the stylistic approach of that game and this one are two very different things. I imagine that Wind Wakers cell-shaded approach is less complicated to tackle and it's overall a brighter, less muddy looking game to begin with. The most barren thing you'll find graphically in Twilight Princess HD is the overworld. I can compare it to the likes of Shadow of the Colossus in the way that it mostly consists of flat grass textures. I think that it could have been done better on that front for sure. The textures themselves are great though: walls, cave inscriptions, brickwork on bridges and the like, even that flat grass texture I mentioned can look pretty nice when the sun shines on it as you're riding around.
I've seen complaints about character models in other reviews as well yet I don't see it, they are pretty sharp and comparable to models in other HD remasters of games and reminded me of Kingdom Hearts 1.5./2.5 HD Remix style. The biggest blunder for this is that it's compared to Wind Waker and being called a shabby cash-grab for not looking greater than or equal to it.

    2. Speaking of cash, I myself (living in Ireland) paid €62 for this game in Argos with the Soundtrack and Amiibo. For me that's already more than worth it since if I go out right now and buy some garbage like Far Cry Primal (which I actually own god help me), it would cost €65 - 70 and I get nothing at all with it. On top of the fact I don't own the game and never finished it when I did have it years ago. It being worth it is based on more than just cost factor. If you never liked this game to begin with, then there's nothing new to it that will change your mind (unless you played the Wii version and hated the controls, you can play this with the Pro Controller).

    3. The gameplay is more important to me than aesthetic look and I'm having a blast playing through this game. One of my favourite things to pull off is landing the killing blow on an enemy & mashing the A button afterwards while idle to watch Link perform the awesome sword sheath. I haven't had any puzzle problems or issues collecting the tears or.. anything really? Maybe that's something to be said. The game is a little bit too easy if you play on normal mode. I'd almost prefer if you only had 3 hearts throughout because I'm never in danger, with every boss I get further and further away from danger. You can amp it up by playing on Hero Mode from the get-go (if you don't mind the mirrored version) or use the Ganondorf Amiibo so enemies do twice the damage. I don't really collect Amiibos though. The gamepad being what it is takes a backseat most of the time but it can be very useful to access your inventory and have the map always by your side. Playing with the Pro Controller 100% of the time myself I haven't had any hiccups and while you can use the gamepad to aim I haven't used it whatsoever.

I really think it's a solid game overall and I'm glad I own it and have played it again now after so long. Not even the story had been spoiled to me since I'd never even watched a playthrough before. If you're in a similar situation as myself with the game I highly recommend picking it up. If you didn't like it, there's not much new to it unless your problem was hating motion controls in which case it's peachy now. It's the definitive way to play the game in my 'definitely subjective review you need not take as fact'.

I'm not sure where to begin, but it was a bit of a shock when i realised the original came out 10 years ago, did not think it had been that long.

My experience playing it again, although enjoyable and still a brilliant game, i now come to see what some people mean when they say its one of the worst games in the series. (key word is "series" here, although considered a poor ZELDA game by many, it easily beats many modern games today)

I first played TP on the wii, and at the time i felt it was the best looking zelda game ever. The "realistic" art style as opposed to cell shading. I still think that is true.. for the time the game was made originally, regardless of the issues about it being released on the gamecube and wii at the same time.

So this is where i have to admit as much as i like twilight princess, the HD version doesnt have the same impact as the original game. 10 years on, the game clearly shows its age. It's HD in the most literal sense - its running a port at a higher resolution. Yes, some of the main characters and elements have had their textures improved, but 99% of the game's models are the blocky polygons from the past.

The game itself and the story is still classic, but i wonder if i would have found more enjoyment from just playing the wii version again instead. Motion control for me was never an issue in the original (except for the simplicity of the sword controls, which nintendo later got right in skyward sword) and, given that TP has by far the easiest boss fights in the series, playing the original with motion control may have been a better option for me. Playing TPHD with the gamepad has many advantages, but it makes the game even easier, it was clearly designed to be played with the wiimote.

Some might say the reason i like TP so much is pure nostalgia, but in the end its a great game, i think some of the harder dungeons in the series, except for the bosses at the end of them. But of course, any amount of nostalgia and 10 year old memories of a game will cloud your view, until the high res remake clears it a bit. I played Ocarina of Time late last year, with an n64 set up on a 32 inch screen, and found that slightly more enjoyable than replaying twilight princess' HD version.

Having said all that, i still loved it, which is why i ended up finishing it so quickly. Although it's not going to happen in Zelda Wii U, i still hope one day nintendo will once again make a zelda game with "realistic" graphics instead of cel shading. The darker storyline, like twilight princess' is also something i think is missing in other more modern zelda games. I wouldn't go as far to say other zelda games are "disneyfied" but there's definately an element of cheerfulness, when you compare something like skyward sword to twilight princess. The story and events of the desert area of twilight princess still put a chill down my spine. The twilight realm and it's inhabitants, although not explored enough, is easily one of the best elements of the zelda universe as a whole. The 2 world concept once again done right.

Although considered by many to be a low point in the zelda series, I still think the story and concepts behind Twilight Princess make it one of the best in the series, even if nintendo could have polished the HD version a bit better.

Oh, and Midna. Still best character ever.

Ten years later, it's pretty clear to see how TP is just kind of okay. Second, while the dungeons are fantastic, the overworld is desolate and empty, providing few things to collect and explore. This may have been acceptable eight years earlier with the rudimentary N64 Zeldas, but there's no excuse for a Wii launch title/late Gamecube title to have such a lifeless world.

And finally, the story in this game is laughably bad. A large part of it is salvaged by the charisma of the main character, Midna, but the actual conflict is poorly written, underdeveloped and needlessly complicated.

TP is a treat for gamers who have never played a Zelda game or for series fans who want a game full of OoT fanservice and coolness for the sake of coolness. But as a game standing on its own, ten years of distance has proved this game is just sort of okay.

Giving it a 6 just based on how strong the dungeons are alone, but it would be more like a 3 or 4 without them.

Still a great game after all these years. I am one of those that considers this a real gem. I admire this game a lot for its uniquely darker tone, wealth of atmosphere, epic/cinematic storytelling, and I love the variety of types of gameplay including mini-games in between the big quests. I'm only taking one point off because of the missed opportunities here.

For one, the menu isn't as good as the menu in Wind Waker HD. Some of the backgrounds and textures could have been redone better, though this is evident more in some places (Hyrule Field for instance) than in others, though the animation is still solid all around. I also don't think the new Amiibo cave adds all that much. Another missed opportunity - they didn't fix how easily Epona clips on her surroundings. After playing games like Red Dead Redemption and MGSV, Epona feels like a relic from a bygone period sometimes.

This is not going to be a popular opinion but I miss the option to use a Wii Remote and Nunchuk to control the game. I mean, I definitely think I prefer the gamepad, but somehow it feels like something's missing without the waggle controls. I wish I could at least use the Wii Remote for fishing, but alas. It's gamepad or pro controller for this game.

If it seems like this review has focused on the negatives, that's because I'm assuming you have played the game already. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?? Go pick it up NOW! Just be sure to use a guide to help speed you through the first 3-4 hours which are just a warm-up for what's ahead.

Hero Mode right off the bat is great. Love the functionality of the Ganon Amiibo (double damage). I almost wish I had one because the game is still a bit easy for me after playing Bloodborne recently.

If you're a big fan of the original "Twilight Princess", this is a no-brainer. Take the plunge! If you didn't enjoy "Twilight Princess" the first time around, I'd wait for a price drop. If price is not a factor, you might be surprised at how great of a game it still is, but you probably won't be too jazzed by the few changes and upgrades as compared to the job they did on Wind Waker HD.

I never owned a Wii or a Gamecube, as both those consoles were released during an extended break I took from console gaming. So when I got the backwards compatible Wii U in 2013, as a huge Zelda fan, one of the first things I did was to get Wii's Twilight Princess. Halfway through the second dungeon, I gave up, as I simply couldn't stomach playing through a 3D Zelda with motion controls. Twilight Princess HD, then, was a very welcome way for me to cover this particular hole in my Zelda backlog.

The first thing you have to know about Twilight Princess is that it was supposed to be a 'back to basics' of sorts for 3D Zelda. After two entries that successfully strayed from the Ocarina of Time blueprint, Nintendo probably thought it was time to be less bold. The result is a game that doesn't offer a lot in terms of innovation in the gameplay loop. Thankfully, this allowed a razor-sharp focus for the game design, resulting in a thoroughly fun experience.

Link starts his adventure by helping solve problems in his pastoral hometown, which offers some basis to a few of the game mechanics you'll come across later on. Soon enough, however, a strange portal rips reality apart, sending forth otherwordly, hostile beasts. As a result, all of the town youngsters are kidnapped, and Link ends up transformed into a wolf for trying to cross the portal. He's then immediately acquainted with a strange little creature called Midna, who goes on to serve as the title's gameplay companion (and is thankfully a vast improvement over Ocarina's Navi).

Overall, the storytelling is pretty good. Midna is an interesting character with intentions that are less than clear initially, and it's nice to watch as her bond with Link unfolds through the game. The cast of NPCs are all the right kind of quirky (you know, classic Zelda), which also helps in regards to the numerous side quests they present.

If there's one thing that actually stands out here, though, it's the dungeon design. I admit I've always been more of an overworld guy, meaning I usually prefer to explore the vast wilderness of Hyrule, and see dungeons as a fun diversion instead of a main gameplay focus. In Twilight Princess, however, the dungeons are so excellently designed that I found myself constantly yearning to find the next one (although yeah, the blandness of the overworld probably helps here, too). Two absolute standouts are the Goron Mines, with its extremely cool use of the iron boots, and the Yeti's Mansion, which has a strangely ominous atmosphere and has a progression theme that's unlike anything the series has ever done for a dungeon.

    TL;DR:
As far as 3D Zelda games go, Twilight Princess might be the most formulaic of them all. Still, this is the Zelda formula we're talking about. Even if the game plays it mostly safe, it's still a compelling, expansive, extremely well-round-out adventure. And yes, it features some of the most impressive dungeon designs to ever grace the series. If, like me, you missed out the first time around, Twilight Princess HD is a great way to remedy that.

For me Twilight Princess is pretty much better than Ocarina of Time everywhere, except for some interpretations of themes and the inclusion of characters maybe. Nevertheless, I like the artstyle way more, Midna is one fantastic character that helps the story of the game, especially as Twilight Princess is one of the more story-focused Zelda games and that is very important for me and the dungeons feel way more organic. I really like the idea of Link becoming a Wolf and the atmosphere that the game has. The final battle is excellent, especially the very last phase and for the Wii U version in particular I like the controls with the pad a lot. Also the HD graphics of course - the game looks great on Game Cube already but it is amazing what this 11 years old game looks like in the Wii U.

I don't even want to talk too much about it anymore. It is just one of my most favourite games of all time and you should get it. Does it have its lengths? Sure. But those lengths never actually are a problem as much as it can be in other games, especially as you should not really be able to get lost and normally you are busy enough with a task that is still not long enough to really feel bored, even if it might be a bit repetitive. The only really sad aspect for me would be that a certain character is not included as much as I would like him to be.

Nintendo is making a huge mistake with these gimmick amiibo's. It is ridiculous to take up more physical space in my house and cost; just to unlock content. Nintendo is really greedy for that: Sell people things they don't want, and if they don't buy them, take away parts of the game that were already programmed into their purchase. How can so many people give this 5 stars? My guess is they have more of their mind on their amiibo collection than problem solving.

I love Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, they both are absolutely wonderful games that no one in this world should miss, but I dare to say that Twilight Princess is the best The Legend of Zelda game ever, because:

    · It's absolutely full of the best features in the series,
    · the story is original and dark,
    · it doesn't seem to be continuously censoring itself,
    · it has a huge amount of varied things to do and places to visit,
    · it's never cheap backtracking unlike Skyward Sword,
    · it's not huge but shallow like Breath of the Wild,
    · The naturalistic visuals are the best in the series this far, specially in the HD version, and they fit best the nature settings of the series and the emphasis on making the player feeling an adventurer.
    · The dungeons are unique and really clever (feel more intelligent by not using any guide).
    · Midna is not a cheesy or annoying mentor (hello, Skyward Sword, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks).
    · The combat has some tweaks and twists including additional techniques, but it's not unnecessary complex.
    · You can be Link, his wolf form, you can ride Epona or a Bullbo, you can fly hang off a Twilit Carrier Kargarok...
    · There are cool mini games and side quests.
    · The soundtrack includes great old songs plus some interesting new melodies.
    · It's not too similar to Ocarina of Time as some people say.

The people who think Twilight Princess is ugly are people that don’t like its dark tone. Twilight Princess is an outstanding game that conveys better than any other Zelda game all its content and intentions. Twilight Princess is arguably the best game Nintendo has ever made.

An overrated Zelda. While it's not bad, it's not that good either. First, Epona's controls are horrible, especially in the bridge fight. The dark atmosphere that has the whole game, makes lose the magic of the other more "colorful" Zelda's games. A plot that tries to thrill, but at no time excited as much as BOTW, or the acclaimed OoT, Majora´s Mask, etc.

You are still seeing the original character models and geometry with a fresh coat of paint. This is especially apparent when looking at Wolf Link. His paws still lack definition.

This game is still worth a play through. If this is something you missed in the transitional phase of GameCube to Wii era, or if you had the game and are looking for a replay it is well worth the money. It comes with a really sharp looking Amiibo of Wolf Link and Midna which is shelf worthy in detail.

The game itself looks much nicer, but I am not sure HD properly describes it, it's not really remade more like it's polished. Unlike its predecessors, Twilight Princess leaves a lot to be desired with character depth, Midna's story is an interesting one but takes quite a long while to develop. It lacks engaging side characters, and the story's pacing is a little off. Unlike Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time, I find it hard to connect to anyone.

It very much feels like the blueprint of Skyward Sword, very challenging puzzles, some of which leave you so frustrated you need to take a breather and tackle them again after a little while. The dungeons are where this game shines, it has some of the most memorable ones to date. Up there with the desert temple of OoT. The clever weapon mechanics breathe fresh air into boss battles, and the game does an excellent job of using more than just the weapon earned in the dungeon to defeat a boss. This is nice, sometimes throwing a bomb into the mouth of a boss in the fire dungeon temple isn't the only way to go.

Overall, it has been a satisfying romp through a solid Zelda game, and my 5 year old has enjoyed the journey with me for the first time. I strongly recommend picking up this title for the Wii U.

Then I played the game, and it is both my 3rd favorite zelda game, and 3rd favorite game in general. The story is amazing, filled with memorable moments. The gameplay combat wise is my second favorite in the series (skyward sword being 1st), the dungeons are fun and challenging, with bosses that are just a blast. The graphics and presentation (while not as timeless and artsy as the wind waker) are truely beautiful, especially with the hd face lift. Watching the sunset in hyrule field is truely breathtaking. The sound track is classic. The character development is inspiring. And the controls are nearly perfect. Being able to switch items on the fly without pausing using the wii u gamepad is seemless and intuitive. I don't want to spoil too much, but it has one of my favorite final levels and bosses in any video game. My only complaint is how they completely stripped out the motion controls. I was a fan of skyward swords wii motion plus combat, so adding wii motion plus functionality as an option would make the combat even more fun. Or even just using the same control setup from the original wii version (but only as an option, as a selectable controller when starting up your game and resuming the save file, with still allowing you to chose the wii u game pad or pro controller) as i'm kind of tempted to try the original wii version just to see what they were like. Either way, this game is still a masterpiece, and if you are a zelda fan, loved ocarina of time, or just enjoy video games in general, i can not recomend this game enough. Expand

So far, I've enjoyed playing through the story (not in any rush to complete it) and has certainly kept me entertained for a couple of hours at a time before needing to do errands in the real world! This has been a gentle reminder how good the series has been and not to be underestimated against other franchises that exist today. I believe the Wii U version makes great use of the gamepad screen for maps (so you can remove the mini map from the main screen so its less cluttered) and sorting out items on the fly (although a little more fiddly for combining item combos). Combat system is alright and the general story is good too
There has been the odd frame glitch/drop out here and there and the game has crashed twice on me as well. Whether updates will fix these bugs we'll have to see but it doesn't wreck the experience of the game...well the crashing might but hasn't happen at a point where I haven't saved!
If you haven't played the Wii/gamecube version of this game (like I haven't) then this will help fill the void for the time being! Whether it'll have any replay value is yet to be decided.

The graphics are a major step-up from the other versions, but it tries to make the atmosphere so gloomy that it can sometimes be tough to see your surroundings. The dungeons give you a great level of challenge this time around, and are probably the best in the series and the optional combat mechanics are really fun to learn. Hyrule is really huge this time around, and while they tried to fix the problem of it being completely empty other than monsters, adding stamp collecting wasn't the way to go. In reality, I liked it more than I could admit at the time but in my teenage mind it was "far behind other Zeldas". 14 years later what started as a cleaning backlog game ended in a wonderful rediscovery journey.

Twilight Princess presents a story more in lines like Majora's Mask or A Link to the Past, it is darker and it touches more serious themes than other Zeldas, is not that is a grim game but I liked quite a lot how they put stuff like revenge, inequality, privilege, etc., into it, they didn't go full-on with them but at least they question things that in other Zelda games where took for granted. I won't say that TP was ahead of its time however I can say that narratively is more in tune with our current discussions as in 2020.

One of the main differentiators from other Zelda games is its art direction, which I have mixed feelings with it, it goes pretty well with the dark atmosphere and tone of the game but some character designs or more specifically the 3d models and textures didn't translate that well, It's not that the art direction is that bad, but for every amazingly designed character like Midna (your companion in this game for those unfamiliar) you have a generic fantasy looking enemy, pretty hit or miss. Speaking of Midna, she's definitely a top tier character in the franchise, she really grew on me the more time I spend with her, plot and gameplaywise, the other characters are great too, some of them can be a little annoying at first, as the kids from the first village, but as the story unfolds, every single one of them have at least one good moment.

One thing worthy of note is that this HD remaster has Hero mode (hard mode) from the start, on which enemies do double damage and they don't drop hearts, I believe this is the definitive mode to play TP since the normal mode is extremely easy, and it gives an extra layer to the combat which is not that bad but is pretty basic. As for the gameplay and maybe the one thing that surprised me the most was the variability of everything, mechanics, boss fights, progression, etc. Unlike Wind Waker which is for better or worse a simple game in everything, in contrast, Twilight Princess is complex (for better or worse) in a lot of its mechanics, dungeons are massive and have exclusive mechanics alongside the item you acquire there, for instance in the first dungeon you will have the boomerang mechanic but also a second mechanic with some characters you'll find there, it adds a lot, the problem is that in some occasions this also translates as not so clear puzzles, poor navigation and backtracking and so on, but at least they try to make it more interesting.

Another great thing is the music and its sound design, most of the tunes have this dreamy feeling and are also memorable and catchy, they capture perfectly the tone of the game and yet they sound like they belong not only in the Zelda franchise but specifically in the TP universe, it might as well contain my favorite Zelda songs, remixed or original.

Speaking of rhythm, the game progression and the story have an incredible flow, the only instance on which I wasn't thrilled to play were those parts that you need to collect "light bugs" to free an area, they were annoying, not fun and at times unintuitive, they break my immersion a lot, at least you have to do this only 3 times so it's not that bad I think, other than this everything unfolds naturally and beautifully. It also has these interlude segments in-between dungeons on which you will be required to do certain things to advance the story, they're different, fun, and memorable, this kind of stuff is part of the Zelda series but here doesn't feel formulaic neither repetitive.

So what's not to like about this game? In summary not that much, my biggest problem might be the combat, it is dully simple even when the game tries to make the illusion that is complex via the skills you will learn but hardly use through the game, enemies don't require much strategy and on the other hand, the boss fights are fun and creative, they also have a second phase when things get a little mixed and add some challenge or variety to the fight, nevertheless, they're way too easy.

I wasn't expecting to revisit this game and liked it so much, even loving it, maybe graphically it didn't age that well like the timeless Wind Waker or even the divisive Skyward Sword, and it has some issues that in the great scheme of things are minuscule, but aside from that the game has a lot of heart, it's fun and rewarding, the story and its characters are memorable and if you're into collecting things this game has a lot of variety in that regard, if you're a veteran or a newcomer to the series please check it out.

Without revolutionizing the series, Twilight Princess pushed it forward, and to this day, Zelda games can't seem to find the middle ground Twilight Princess hit so well between innovation and great gameplay.

On the other hand, with this being on the Wii U, one might have had a realistic expectation of a surreal overhaul of the graphics and some sprawling new content and pacing fixes. Instead, this feels like a very barebones effort to celebrate a ten-year-old GameCube game. Sure, the textures look better, but not nearly on par with what the Wii U is fully capable of. The new "dungeon" is just another Cave of Ordeals, and the prize is pitiful. Amiibo support is woefully underutilized, and there's just not enough substantial new content for returning players to find a reason to visit, not even a spruced-up soundtrack. If you haven't played Twilight Princess before, this version still preserves everything amazing about the original almost to a fault and features satisfying horseback riding, some truly jaw-dropping moments and the best side character the Zelda series has seen so far.

Check out my full review of Twilight Princess over at the GameCube version! This review covers what's been changed.

This remake gives Twilight Princess a much-needed fresh coat of modern paint and adds some bonus functionality. As a remake, it's alright, but the game as a whole is much improved. Visuals are retextured and bloom is reduced, leaving the style up to personal opinion. Human -> Wolf switching is streamlined and the Wii U touchscreen menus are a gift. The Wolf Link amiibo, who comes with the physical edition, brings the Cave of Ordeals, which expands on Wolf Link's capablities - or, rather, gives you the chance to use them. The Tears of Light are reduced in number (thank Hylia), the Poe Lantern improves the Poe Hunt a fair bit, and other amiibo functionality (despite being physical, limited run DLC) is inconsequential. Except for Ganondorf, who (when doubled with the VERY NECESSARY Hero Mode) brings a real challenge. While Twilight Princess still has flaws, it has improved in some big ways. I've rated it as 10 since I'm rounding up from a 9.5.

The game play is a little bit more fine tuned than the last few 3d predecessors, but clunky as always. Platforming in the 3d Zelda games suck, but the combat is as fun as ever, even when you get to be a dog.
The Wii U version (just like most Wii U games) does come with the added advantage of the screen on the controller. This made the game a lot more enjoyable as the player is given easy access to the maps and inventory screen. Really saves you from having to stop and start to equip an item or check your location.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite game ever made! The emotional journey it takes you on is incredible and the action filled gameplay is damn near perfect. Midna and Links character development is amazing and the small details like midna patting links head help bring this game home. The ending is sad but happy, and I can’t say I have played a better game Expand

I really like the remake and I would play twilight princess 100 times more than ocarina of time if you like ocarina of time then you must play this masterpiece no more words need to be said

One component of the original Twilight Princess refused to be transferred into HD. It is, unfortunately, the most important one – the game’s distinct atmosphere, that vanished almost completely. [05/2016, p.61]

This attractive port is a great chance to reappraise - and very much enjoy - an underrated Zelda. [Apr 2016, p.76]

Twilight Princess HD is a great game and should be played if you haven't on the Wii or GameCube. To those that already played it, this HD release offers few additions.
