The game has beautiful graphics with a great story. I really like all the stuff you can do. What I don't like is all the rain and ambushes. Every time I try to climb something it rains and I'm trying to climb something it rains and I fall down. The ambushing happens when I'm trying to sneak kill an enemy camp and skeletons or bats attack me and I get attacked by like 10 things at once. TheThe game has beautiful graphics with a great story.

    1 - Ocarina of Time
    2- Skyward Sword
    3- Wind Waker
    4- Breath of Wild
    5- Spirit Track
    (?)Majora Mask
    (?) Between Worlds

    Abstract:

A Sandbox of Zelda is very easy. The world is dead, no animals, no clima, all is empty. Tecnichally poor but beatiful (but poor). With food and weapons (you can find easily in any place on Hyrule) you are God mode, and you cant die. Very easy game. The Story... regular.

Good game, yeah, good, no perfect or the best in the world.... o no, only good. My list of game of zelda, in order I prefer, is:

    1 - Ocarina of Time
    2- Skyward Sword
    3- Wind Waker
    4- Breath of Wild
    5- Spirit Track
(?)Majora Mask (I dont play it but i will)
(?) Between Worlds (I dont play it but i will)

After beating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild I must say I am a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the world and the dynamic gameplay and problem solving involved, but to me the game felt scattered, unconnected, and incomplete. If you don’t have a switch yet I can promise you, you are not missing much other than hype. Over all I would give the game 3/5.

In terms story, I felt it fell short in regards of what I expect from a Zelda game. The story passed the buildup and placed you directly into the conflict, but the conflict didn’t seem like much of a conflict. Outside of the dark castle at the center of the map, the occasional blood moon, and the random goblins scattered about, the world seemed at piece. There was no great turmoil in the towns. The divine beasts were mostly a nuisance, not a threat. There was no sense of urgency for Gannon to be stopped.
The open world aided to the feel of a lack of urgency. It was great getting to explore a massive open world, but with the vastness of the space I felt were not many memorable areas. Most of the game was identical looking. Green hills, brown dirt, rocks, lots of grass, trees. Very few locations stood out. The lack of a memorable soundtrack greatly aided in this. My biggest disappointment was the soundtrack because, well, there wasn’t one. One of the most memorable aspects of the Zelda franchise. Throughout the game there is only a handful of soundtracks, the most memorable being the cooking one.
In addition to this, there was no real progress. Free the divine beast in no particular order, do every shrine you see, fight Gannon. It was mostly a check list. In addition, gear progression was the same. I never got attached to any weapon I found because it would just break. I used twigs and skeleton arms for most of the game. The gear didn’t feel all that special. I farmed the ancient soldier gear only to find that the barbarian gear from the labyrinth shrines was better, which was also a disappointment.
The additional quests were also lackluster. They had an MMO style feel to them and most of the quest I completed had rewards of little worth, or you spent more in terms of time, food, equipment, and arrows completing the quest than you were rewarded. In addition, the quest felt like they had no impact on the world, did not aid in progression, and were essentially put in the game to make it feel more like an RPG.
The Art direction of the game also had some issues. Whereas it was unique and beautiful, the highly saturation colors provided little contrast. This made it hard to see in many situations where sight was crucial. I adapted to it after some time, but the game could defiantly use more contrast.
For those not trained in art, this may not make much sense, but when you look at an image it has something called a tonal range. This maps the value of color according to its relative lightness and darkness compared against black and white. An image with a realistic tonal range should have value all the way across, ranging from deep blacks to bright whites in highlights. A low contrast lacks both of these, and bunches them in the middle. After taking various screen shots from the game I confirmed this was the case by placing them in Photoshop and looking at their tonal range. A vast majority had no dark or light points, just mid tones.
Over all the game is good. It is worth playing to experience the excitement and fun an open world RPG brings, but for those expecting a rich world filled with excitement, adventure, and amazing story telling you will walk away shot handed. This is their 1st open world game of this caliber, and they were successful in their endeavor, but I just hope they manage to incorporate a bit more of the magic of the Zelda universe into the game next time.

My cons with Zelda Breath of the Wild after 200 hours.
---> the story is bad,, nothing is epic, the sandbox takes all the space.
---> We don't care about the NPCs, not even their names like we used to in previous Zelda games. You can skip them and if you come back later to them they give you outdated news like "oh, there is a Shrine above Kakariko" (oh really?). They are not even in

You can skip them and if you come back later to them they give you outdated news like "oh, there is a Shrine above Kakariko" (oh really?). They are not even in danger, they are not miserable, the 4 divinities are not dangerous, they should be used to them now, they have been corrupted for 100 years! 100 years!! 1 or 2 generations and yet they still complain about them!!. Those NPCs have no background: Hyrule has been destroyed recently and no one talks about that! They don't even know Link the knight of Zelda! Again, the story sucks, not even plausible. Miyamoto said he didn't care about the story. You see the result. How can you feel a Heros, there are nothing to save, no Ganon if you don't go and meet him. Zelda is more than 100 years old like her horse. Ok.
IMO, Link should have been 10 000 years old, woke up naked in a forest, with no memory and he would have made his own destiny from here.
Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask are way better in term of story/pace/emotion.
---> You can't go fishing, like on a lake, with a boat. You don't meet an old sea dog who would tell you about a monster in the lake. NO, here everybody can see dragons flying in the air every day. Everything is fine. All the more those dragons just belongs to the farming system of the game. Woohoo!
---> No undergrounds, no caverns to explore. The only dark area sucks (bird statue temple to get another shrine)
---> You can't dive with the Zora outfit.
    ---> Infinite bombs. Bad idea.
---> Uninteresting side quests even if there were a few good ideas.
---> a lot of food for nothing. You always make the same easy and efficient recipes. There are not even a book in your inventory to remember them.
---> make a fire and change time is mainly useless. It could have brought a survival system (sleep/eat).
---> 900 korok seeds. I understand why but, there were better to do. More complex conundrums with bigger secrets, not trinkets behind a breakable wall (...)
---> few enemies, they all look the same like their camps.
---> there were farmers outside villages in the first presentation of the game.
---> No obstacle linked to enemies, or any events. Camps protect nothing, Lynels protect nothing. They are just idiot monsters doing nothing. And why can you climb everything in the first place. The game give you everything, all the powers. The endurance jauge is not a real issue.
---> That's why you leave your horse so often, climbing is better. Climbing should have been given later.
---> no hidden Temple, protected by magic like the two sphinx statues in "The Never ending Story" for instance, no "Great River of Wilderlands" with giant statues like in "Lord of the rings". Everything is open, dammit!
---> Bosses suck. Ganon is a shame. His second form is pathetic. A awful rip-off of Nago in Princess Mononoke.
    ---> 4 forgettable & easy dungeons.
---> Shrines may last 1 minute or 10? 20 of them are trials of power. 20! Too much.
---> Kakariko village famous tune is gone. No graveyard, no link with previous Zelda games unless the name of the regions (by the way, the ruins of Lon Lon Ranch are recent, it makes no sense again).

Not a bad game of course, exploring the world is great, sure Nintendo worked hard on the engine. but it could have been way better. Zelda is not epic anymore since Wind Waker. I hope it will be a good basis for the next one. At least it is way better than Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword.

It is a good game, I can see the amount of effort that the developers put into this game.

The gameplay is the best part of the game, the combat is awesome. The base is a "Souls Style of Combat" but it has some peculiarities that make it even more interesting. The weapons you use always will break there is nothing you can do to stop them to break so you need to change the weapons and each weapon has a different type of attack and some have special moves like light beams, that really incentive the player to try out different weapons and I really liked. It is cool you don't need to upgrade your weapon to use it, so you can pick up any weapon from the ground and you are ready to use it immediately.

Another peculiarity is how intuitive is the combat, pretty much everything you think works out like you can make things fall over the enemies to kill them, you can throw them on the water, you can use stealth. It is really fun.

The puzzles and the exploration are good, nothing at Mario Odyssey puzzles level but it is still better than the average puzzles you see in the games industry.

Gameplay hours does not equal a good game. Neither does freedom or a good physics engine. These are novelties, or components, of what can make a good game. But you take these things away from BOTW and there's not as much there as other Zelda games. I'll admit, I'm in the minority, but I personally don't care much for open world games, and I don't like RPG's. I do love Zelda though. Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time, and Link's last outing in a Link Between Worlds was nothing short of pure genius. I even liked Skyward Sword a lot. But those games were about varied gameplay and puzzle solving. In prior Zelda's there were constantly new items and abilities that would change the gameplay. Getting the hookshot didn't just change where you could go but it changed how you could solve puzzles, how you could travel, and how you could fight in a way that made the game feel slightly different once you got the hookshot. There isn't that varied gameplay in this entry. There's something to be said for having all your abilities available so soon in the game and being able to travel wherever you want immediately, but they did sacrifice gameplay variation for this. From start to finish the gameplay never really changes or is varied much, and that is very different from any other Zelda. I did mention earlier that I like puzzle solving elements of Zelda games, and that is what is very good about this game. Previous Zelda's often only had one way to solve a puzzle, this games unique physics engine has made it so you can solve a puzzle in a variety of ways. That is very cool. But it takes 35 minutes to traverse to the puzzle because along the way you break 1 shield and 3 swords, have to cook 3 meals and die Dark Souls style 4 times from random enemy camps. This thing is a time pit, and not in a way that I like. Skyward Sword had varying temples and lands that were very artistically inspired. Breath of the Wild is inspired not by art, but by nature. And I can understand that appeal, but the flashy, highly stylized and varying elements of Skyward Sword appealed to me a lot more. I wanted to like this game, but I'm nearing the end I just haven't found it as enjoyable as any Zelda I've played before it. A miss from Nintendo in my book. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This might be the worst Zelda game I have played yet, which is so sad because it easily could have been the best if they didn't pull typical modern Nintendo and modern triple A tactics to ruin their game.

The strong point of this game is the beginning of the game (yep, typical triple A game) and the exploration aspect of it. It's mostly pretty to look at too. That's about where the strengths end unfortunately.

We don't get many characters so I'll just summarize my gripes with the game:
-The weapon durability system in this game is trash. I'd say every weapon was made of glass but that'd be an insult to glass, it's more like fighting with peanut brittle. I'm not kidding you that every single weapon in this game breaks after one or two enemies. There is no indication of durability aside from your weapon will notify you when it is 1 or two wacks away from breaking. As a result you are never excited to ever receive a new weapon (which makes up most of the shrine treasure chests in the game) because you know it's just pointless.
Literally the only weapon in the game you have any excitement for is the master sword, not because it's necessarily anymore bad ass than the rest of the weapons, but because IT DOES NOT PERMANENTLY BREAK. Oh don't worry, it still breaks, it just comes back into your inventory after a set amount of time.
Why oh WHY are people ok with this god awful weapon system? It is not fun at all plain and simple. It doesn't "solve open world issues" like everyone is claiming it does, all it does is pointlessly slow down the game and kill the momentum with constant micro managing of your inventory. In fact, that leads into my next gripe:

-The game is big but it's not actually as big as it needs to be... it's made much "bigger"(aka longer) due to pointless unfun mechanics that slow the game down. We've gone over the weapons, but how about rain and lightning? Half the game it's raining it seems, and since 90% of what you'll be doing in this game is climbing the **** of mountains everywhere, you basically are forced to just put your controller down, go into the kitchen, come back and see if the rain has let up yet, because you'll never be able to climb any significant cliff in this game (yes even with full climbing gear) due to slipping down constantly in the rain. And since your stamina is such a joke in this game until you hit end game, you'll never climb a decent sized cliff in the game for the majority of it. Lightning is even more annoying. If you have any metallic weapon, bow, OR shield equipped, you have to manually removed them. And considering 90% of **** everything you'll get in those categories is metallic - surprise - you get yet another unfun inventory managing pause of the game to unequip everything or else you'll get one shot killed by lightning. I'm not even exaggerating.

The difficulty in this game is jacked up beyond all repair as well. It's open world so you are free to complete it in any order you like, but let's just say you are somewhat directed to complete the zora dungeon first due to mian quest lines nudging you to that area of the map. If this was actually a well designed game, the option to go take on harder dungeons would be a good one but it should not be the one you are nudged into going to first. Believe me when I say the zora dungeon is hands down the hardest thing you will ever do in the game. I'm not exagerating when I say you'd have an easier time just going straight to hyrule castle and taking on ganon.

Meanwhile the rito dungeon is so laughably easy that many of the 120 shrines in the game are actually harder than that entire dungeon. And don't get me wrong, the zora dungeon is not hard due to a well designed set of puzzles or anything. You can just google it and do the dungeon in 30 seconds but where's the fun in that? The four main dungeons in the game are basically just brain teasers, but while the other 3 are at least somewhat clever, the zora one just makes no sense at all and goes against everything the game has taught you up until that point.

Running out of characters so I'll get on to the ending - boy oh boy I haven't been this disappointed in an ending anticlimactic sequence since Fallout 3 (and this is actually worse). The only good thing about it is the music of hyrule castle. Beyond that, there is zero thought you have to put into getting to Ganon, literally just climb a few mountains and you're there. And Ganon himself... hoo boy. I am not kidding you when I say that a silver bokoblin puts up a harder fight than this guy. It is such a joke of a final boss. I don't even think I ever got hit once by him on the first try beating him and I am not a good gamer at all. His movements are slow and telegraphed, his health total is a joke, and once you beat him you don't get treated to any decent epilogue ending sequence at all (would have at least given SOME point to all the pointless quests you did in the game)

Just another modern open world survival element **** game with a half-assed Zelda skin. Not a bad game by any means, but completely average in every way possible. The only thing that makes it stand out is it's lack of game breaking glitches that plagues the market today. Unfortunately you're forced to play it on one of many awful controllers, so there's that to deal with...

(If you want to know ask me) I have written short stories based on the games and done artwork on Zelda on Da. My point is that I also played and completed this Zelda BOTW with 70 shrines and a god-awful amount of Korok Seeds and got the True ending and I find this Zelda to be the most boring and NON-Zelda like game Out of the entire series for MANY reasons some of which i shall list below.

    1. Classic Link outfit is only obtainable after gathering all 120 shrines or if you have an Amibo of Link. This bothers me simply because it’s a ZELDA GAME Link by default should have the classic Zelda outfit.

    2. WAY WAY too many different nonsensical outfits that look stupid (loved the Zora outfit) and really just didn't seem like they fit into the game for me. if they had to do this they could have at least made them look like they fit in the world of Hyrule. (some of them were ok)

    3. The Shrines were a boring and uninspired way to take up time to make the game seem longer for no real reason.

    4. The Side-quests were a 80% of the time (A) boring and (B) lacking in a worthwhile reward for the time and effort it took to complete them. I found myself dreading the side-quests and them at some point just asking my buddy to do them. while i went, and did something else or took a break for fresh air.

    5. The Dungeons... THOSE ARE NOT DUNGEONS! they were just puzzles and boring ones at that! I want classic Zelda dungeons that felt creepy and challenging at times with the dark and gloomy atmosphere in some of them too.

    6. The enemies in this game are really lacking in variety. You have about 10 different kinds of mobs in this game and all they did was vary the elements they attack with. or make some living and some dead. not to mention a number of classic Zelda mobs were not even in the game!

    7. The lack of any direction to the game (granted i don’t really play too many open world games). This game could have at least given a suggestion as to who to go after first and then leave it up to us to decide what to do. But it doesn't it just says kill 4 Divine beasts and kill Ganon with no suggestion as to who might be the wiser person to go after first. I ended up doing the hardest first only to realize I needed stuff that I couldn't yet get without going to another Divine beast’s zone first. (this one could be chalked up to my skill if you want)

    8. The Bosses are all forms of Ganon! GEEZE! It felt like they didn't even try with any of the enemies in this game! Again, lots of opportunity to do something really cool here and they didn't even try to be very creative.

    9. Link does not feel like Link He may look like it but he doesn't respond like it. not really sure how to explain it. I think it’s the mechanics of the game just don’t feel like a Zelda title.

    10. I would have loved to get more Homage visually to the preceding games (besides the Temple of Time) as the game implies its coming possibly after TooT, MM, TP and WW and other titles as well. They really could have showed the water temple from TooT in sort of ruins at lake Hylia or Kakariko Village windmill despite the time from of the game they could have at least done the graveyard in Kakariko Village. There was just SO much potential with the size of the map to make it pay some tributes.

    11. It’s a huge world that is sparsely populated with anything worth seeing other then grass and although the world does look amazing it just doesn't have much in it to keep me enthralled.

    12. The soundtrack was just not very good. The only time i ever felt that Zelda Vibe and felt the presence of the music was when I was at Hyrule castle. How sadly disappointing as a part of what makes Zelda a Zelda is the Music score.

The game was a good but not great. It lacked many things that make a Zelda title special in my view. I feel like you could rename everything and take a view elements out of the game and slap another name on it and it would work just fine under a different title and that’s why it doesn't feel like a proper Zelda game for me. However for new Zelda players this game could easily be amazing to them and maybe this is just what this generation of players is looking for and I’m just a sad old timer gamer who longs for the old days of the 1990's games of yesteryear.

6/10 is my rating for Zelda Breath of the Wild

This 10/10 game has a beautifully crafted world and story for you to explore with your 2 feet tied together. Weapons that shatter after a small amount of use, drowning in waist high water from lack of stamina, and a deplorable frame rate to slow the combat down makes for a frustrating experience that is neither fun nor challenging.

The music is good when there is any.
The controls of the game are good and I liked the durability system but I would've liked a indicator on how much dura you have left on the weapon/shield/bow.
Hunting and gathering to make your own potions and food is a nice feature in the game that I like so you don't need to buy everything from a shop.
As for the story it was ok but not great.
At the end of the game I didn't feel accomplished.
I probably won't play it again.

Three, weapons break so easy. The game tells you when your weapon is damaged (which happens quickly), but Four, YOU CAN'T EVEN REPAIR THEM. So why the hell does it tell you they are damaged? To save it's last hit? Five, the "dungeons" seem like they were designed for 7 year olds. They are pathetically obvious. Barely puzzles. Six, just like playing Hyrule Warriors feels like you're playing a clone of Dynasty Warriors, playing Breath of the Wild feels like you are playing a clone of Monster Hunter Ultimate. Seven, Rain and Blood Moons. I understand that the rain is for the immersivity, and the Blood Moon is to give a challenge, but when it rains you can't climb a damn thing, which you kind of need to climb a lot in the game, and if a blood moon shows up have fun trying to get anywhere. Eight, the ragdoll physics feature would be cool if every time you hit a enemy they didn't fly 5 damn feet away from you. I could go on and on, but I'm just going to stop here. I know they wanted to make the game more challenging, but all they did was make a lot of the game's features annoying. The game would be good if it wasn't an annoying laggy mess.

TL,DR Version: If you're going to buy it, buy the Wii U version. The Switch version is lag fest. And also if you're going to buy it, be prepared to get very annoyed having all your new weapons break in under 2 minutes of use, and a lot, lot and I mean LOT of traveling in a straight line to very far away objective points on a map too big for it's own good." -Quail, My good friend.

I will weight my review in 3 areas. Overall impression, Gameplay, and Graphics. I will not dock points for performance as mentioned above i played this game for Wii U. This is also 100% my opinion of the game based on my experience so far. i have not read a single review yet as i want to have the least biased review possible.

    Overall Impressions:
The game starts off with a voice speaking to link. I was surprised that a Zelda game could finally have some sort of voice acting. It was also nice that the game doesnt force you into pointless tutorials, the game teaches as you play and become immersed in the world around you. after you leave the starting room, the title appears and introduces you to the massive world you will soon explore. Overall a decent start to the game. The starting section of the massive world however is linear at first with little to do except power through.

    Overall 2/3

    Graphics:
The look and atmosphere of BOTW is stunning, even on Wii U. The world seems to be alive. plants regrow, the textures look well designed and the sound track is incredible. Not much else to say here

    3/3

    Gameplay:
While it is refreshing to depart from the old Zelda formula, this does have its clear flaws. Alot of element of gameplay are simply borrowed from other games ex: Elder Scrolls, Far Cry, Assassins Creed. But what the game does barrow makes sense for an open world game. The Combat leaves much to be desired. I enjoy learning my enemies and figuring out how to use my weapons to win a combat, this quickly becomes tedious when constantly switching to different weapons when they break. Crafting is bare bones with little customization and some enemies can attack from what seems to be outside of the render distance. What first impressions i had and the appearance of the game makes up for lacks heavily in overall game play. i found looking for new weapons to be more of a chore. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the combat is the lack of rolling. Im not against changing the zelda formula, i welcome it, but removing such a useful game play mechanic made my experience suffer greatly. Just try to play any Dark Souls game without rolling at all. you cant. Links powers on the other hand are creative original and fun to experiment with. On a final note, WHERE DID THE DUNGEONS GO?????? its just simple and easy challenges like, 1 puzzle or 2 despite being hundreds of these locations in the game. this just seems like lazy game design to me.

    1/4

    Final Score 6/10

I enjoy this game, but it still leaves much to be desired. i have been a Zelda fan for years, and i praise all additions to the series. But i think there is a long way to go, i hope Nintendo can at the very least going forward(for a new zelda game), bring back the roll, fix the weapon degrade system and include ACTUAL DUNGEONS.

The game has a shrine system that involves spending a great deal of time finding a shrine and then solving it in a much shorter time. What was good about the dungeon system in the older Zelda system was that all the puzzles and rooms made up the dungeon so that it was all in one spot. The dungeons in this one are all short and uninteresting. The mechanics for puzzles is over simplified with much less tools then in older games.
Combat is interesting in how unbalanced it is. Many enemies will one shot so that extra hearts have little impact. Weapons break in several uses and as a result most enemy's are not worth fighting. Using limited weapons to get more weapons that are limited is a waste of time and is more often than not unnecessary. I also seemed to run out of arrows often.
This game would be great if the shrines did not involve looking around for so long. The Ubisoft type towers should show where they are. The combat system could use some more polish. Older Zelda's had better dodging and blocking mechanics that were missed. This game didn't leave a lasting impression on me like other Zeldas have.

Its unfortunate that big game reviewers have to give high scores to big budget games or they will lose funding or get boycotted by Fanboys.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My feelings on this game are terribly mixed.
Good: a truly excellent open world, beautifully designed, artistically gorgeous, endlessly explorable. It brings fresh life to the now-standard idea of an open world. The new Link is full of personality for a guy who never really talks. NPCs are charming, quirky, and often funny, and exhausting their dialogue options is always worthwhile. Kass and Paya are personal favorites. The physics engine was incredible! One thing they really did right was in all the little details. There are plenty of joyous surprises for those who want to experiment and explore. So let me repeat--this is an excellent game, and it's worth you time. A superlative game, compared to others on the market. It is not, however, without flaws, even quite serious flaws.

Bad: The enemy variety is uninspired. A handful of enemies that are repeated endlessly, with different skins and colors. Unlike previous Zelda games, you won't find any redeads, wallmasters, poes, or any unexpectedly terrifying monsters like Dead Hand from OOT. No scary enemies or creepy dungeons where you might hear the telltale shriek of a redead paralyzing you.

Hand in hand with that is the boss variety. Unlike previous Zelda games, there aren't new and exciting, visually impressive bosses that challenge you to use the skills and tools at your disposal. You fight the same boss 4 times, and then again as the end-game boss. Over and over, with slightly different elemental powers. The final boss looks like it's trying to pass for a monster in Yharnam--but if I wanted to fight Yharnam monsters, I'd be playing Bloodborne, not Zelda. It's nothing like Ganon. It doesn't have the crushing difficulty to match a Bloodborne enemy anyway.

Combat quickly becomes lackluster with the frustrating weapon durability mechanic. Rather than encouraging variety, it encourages you to use your worst weapons the whole time for fear of losing your good ones, or the ones with elemental powers that you need for special enemies. The master sword's "energy limit" is some serious garbage too. A breakable master sword? Really? In the end, the durability mechanics turned the MS from the Blade of Evil's Bane to the Blade of Chopping Down Trees Because I Don't Want to Waste My Other Blades.

The story is often charming and could have been great, if they had put more focus on developing a compelling story. But, like the music, it's so downplayed it's barely noticeable, so that when the occasional familiar Zelda element slides in, it feels weirdly out of place.

The music is not very memorable, and nothing like the sweeping epics of its predecessors. Once in a while, a familiar tune will play, and in the final castle, it finally comes in full-force. But it feels like a fun musical Zelda reference in a non-Zelda game. Jarring.

Dungeon variety is woefully nonexistent. Arguably the most impactful element of the franchise's incredible legacy, sprawling, complex, rich, and sometimes nerve-wracking dungeons are part of what made the series so famous. They're iconic. But they're totally excised this time. You have shrines, 120 samey mini-dungeons with repetitive puzzles. And you have divine beasts, 4 samey, slightly larger mini-dungeons. There's no variety to them at all, nothing to make them even visually distinct and interesting. Even exploring the beautiful open world begins to lose its appeal when you realize that the only rewards you will find are shrines and korok seeds.

I could go on. But it boils down to this one sad, strange feeling. There's a difference between shaking up convention and straightforward iconoclasm. And this game falls too hard toward the latter. Utterly gutting the series icons gave us a breathlessly beautiful product, with nothing under the surface, least of all a Zelda game. Maybe it sounds trivial, but I find that Link's redesign is not only one of the worst offenses, but emblematic of the underlying problem. They took Link's iconic green outfit with his pointy hat away, reportedly because it doesn't "look cool." Sure, in isolation, there's nothing especially cool-looking about the green tunic. But it DOES look cool--because it looks like Link, from the Legend of Zelda, and Link is cool. He makes it look heroic. There are lots of cool-looking video game characters out there, but there's only one who looks like Link. The attitude among the devs that said Link isn't cool-looking enough is the same attitude that said Ganon needed to look like a Soulsborne villain. It's the same attitude that took away deep dungeons, exciting bosses, creative enemy designs, and cool weapon variety. It never felt like I was playing Zelda. As an open-world RPG with a barely passable Zelda skin, it was neat. But it soured so fast I was feeling heartbroken by halfway through the game. It's sad to see the devs disregarding the legacy of such an important series. In the end, what makes Zelda so special was gone, and that, for me, outweighed the joys.

I have given this game a number of chances. I think this is the third time I have stopped playing and I can't see any hope for it. First time I came upon some of the surface flaws. Weapons breaking. This is the number 1 flaw in this game. I really don't care what their theory was for why this was a good idea, it plainly was not. It discouraged me from going anywhere or doing anything. every time I saw a monster or a tree or anything that required a weapon, I avoided it. what is the point in using your weapons when the trade-off is just not worth it. it's not a sensible risk. you would have to be an idiot to attack a group of enemies in this game, because you come out worse than you went in. for the most part when playing this first time, I avoided most encounters, I avoided exploring and I only ever used the worst weapon I had in my inventory at any time. because why would i want to break the best weapon I have? I might need it later. The whole system is just ridiculous. If I could repair them , then it might have made it better, but as it happens, it just discourages you from actually playing the game. I played this until I had defeated the first beast, in zora domain. at this point I felt like the story, the quests, everything was too disjointed to make it worthwhile playing with this weapon breaking dynamic. I was in Akkala and I realised the only way to get any fun out of the game was to be free to explore. so I quit.

Second time I played it, was after getting latest CEMU and the unbreakable weapon mod. This made a big difference. I finally felt free to actually play the game. I knew there was a carpenter in Akkala somewhere do I decided to explore with that as my basis. it felt like the only interesting thing that I had in my mind from my previous playthrough. So I spent a long time exploring that place. found some korok seeds, completed some shrines, smashed some rocks, picked up some plants, etc. I was just enjoying the game for 'what it is'. I played this way for about a week. I found the carpenter, and found the workshop. Carpenter just gave me some fetch quests, and the workshop was a tiny bit of story but nothing really major. It was at this point I realised that there wasn't really much in this game other than collecting things. the shrines are boring and dull. just a bunch of mini puzzles. I can get that from any indie game on steam. I don't do that because I don't like dull repetitive puzzles. I don't see any point in just collecting stuff. I certainly don't feel any kind of reward from the damn koroks. So it was here that I realised I was wasting my time. I was going to quit, but I noticed there was DLC available.

Third chance I gave this game. the DLC. I learnt I could get a thing for my horse so that I could teleport and actually bring my horse with me. that makes a big difference. so I went on that quest to do that. not a great quest to be honest. it involved looking for a bunch of places with very vague and obscure clues. for something that is supposed to help you to actually explore, the designers thought it made sense for you to have already explored everywhere. so it's an actual pointless item, that is only really available to the players who no longer need it. I heard about other things in this game that do the same thing. oh well, I went on the quest. what was it. a couple of treasure chests stuck in the ground. not flair at all. so that was disappointing. There is so much more wrong at this point I started to get angry. if it's raining, you can't see, so you have to wait, but you can't 'wait' because you can't make a fire in the rain. even under a shelter. There is so much more bad stuff, and no good stuff. no reward, no story development. The game is just terrible. This is like skyrim without the quest lines or interesting stories.

Namely, that this game is incredibly underwhelming, in pretty much every way imaginable. Combat is uninspired, the crafting mechanics feel tacked on, the AI is easily exploited especially when objects are in the way, and the story is.... well... laughably bad. The game features repetitive puzzles and embarrassing use of reskinned enemies. The framerate issues and objects in the distance popping in and out is horrible to experience. This game is simply not worth your time in any sense of the word. It is, in essence, an Assassin's Creed type game. It is promoting itself on this promise of delivering a game with a really cool idea, but the reality of the experience is more than simply lackluster. It is downright pathetic..

It is upsetting that the game is getting such good reviews since it means the Zelda formula I so enjoy is likely gone forever. Below are the details on what I'm talking about:

It is upsetting that the game is getting such good reviews since it means the Zelda formula I so enjoy is likely gone forever. Below are the details on what I'm talking about:

Dungeons - Previous Zelda games had intricate dungeons. This game has for the most part traded them in for shrines. Though there are many more shrines than there have been dungeons in any Zelda game, the shrines tend to have very simplistic puzzles. Most can be finished in about 2 minutes and require very little thought. A few of these shrines involve combat, but it is always against the same boring enemy. A few of these shrines require solving a puzzle to find in the first place, and a number of those, the puzzle is basically to wait until the right time of day, then perform a menial task like shooting an arrow. For me, a game that is making me stand around and wait for something to happen is restricting my freedom and inflicting boredom.

Exploration - For most people exploration is the big selling point, and it's true that there is a vast world to explore. Unfortunately I find that there are only a few different types of things to find, so it feels very repetitive. I always enjoyed the fact that in previous Zelda games you would notice areas you couldn't get to until you had the right item, and the excitement of returning once the item was found. This game doesn't really stop you from going anywhere once the initial couple of hours are done, and the few skills added after don't really offer anything that changes the gameplay as previous Zelda's did. Again I'm in the minority and obviously people love the fact they can do whatever they want...but to me it goes against one of my favourite things about Zelda games.

Combat - Due to weapon durability, I was inclined to skip combat. It was boring and repetitive. There are a few bosses to fight but they don't require any thinking/ingenuity or special item usage like previous bosses.

Very little traditional Zelda music - this speaks for itself.

Conversations and cut scenes - More tedium. Most conversations take too long. I shouldn't have to wait for text to catch up with my reading speed, or wait for cheesy character animations or horrible voice acting.

Climbing and Movement - This was incredibly tedious! So much of the game revolves around climbing, and the climbing is soooo slow! Not only that but you can easily spend a couple minutes climbing and then run out of endurance to reach the top... what a waste of time. The same applies to swimming - if you can't make it to shore it is game over. Walking/running speed is very slow too, but at least you don't get game over from it. You can upgrade stamina, which improves things a bit, but it is still very tedious. The worst feature of the game is the rain. Climbing is required all the time, and if it rains you can't climb... forcing you to switch gears and do something else, or just wait 10 minutes for the rain to stop.

Lightning - When there's a lightning storm, you have to remove all your metal gear. Some people would label this as 'attention to detail', and maybe it is... but it doesn't change the fact that this is a super annoying gameplay mechanic. Like rain, this game is full of these kinds of annoying things that prevent you from doing what you want to do.

Overall, this is my least favourite Zelda for the reasons stated. I really hope Nintendo does continue down this road for future Zelda games. Unfortunately they are really losing me as a fan... hopefully they don't ruin Metroid in the same way.

The world of Breath of the wild is as vast as the ocean, it's truly huge but sadly about as deep as a puddle. I simply skipped almost every fight since there is nothing to be gained from them.

The biggest problem I found is that there's little point to doing anything other than the shrines, why kill those mobs over there? to get some arrows or a weapon etc which I will find something better of in a shrine most likely. Why look for korok seeds to increase my inventory when I'm already holding weapons that I'm just going to throw at something?

The world itself I found really detailed and beautiful to look at but that's as far as I cared about it. Comparing it to something like Skyrim BotW is lacking, Skyrim has a massive world where talking to npc's can give you quests that take you into whole other worlds and can lead to some really interesting story or lore, investigating a statue would lead to dealing with a god and being rewarded or punished in some way. BotW however rewards you with little to nothing for your efforts, the story I class as nearly non existent, npc's may point you in the right direction, or hint at some shrine nearby etc but it's all the same thing over and over, I'm sure I could look up online all the shrine locations and just grind them to get the hearts and then do the divine beasts and ganon and I wouldn't loose any of the experience it would simply be easier. When I was playing Skyrim and looking up guides I still really enjoyed the adventure, BotW lacks that.

So to summarise the world is nice to look at and theres' collectables to be found (bugs, plants etc) but ultimately gives no good reason to want to explore it once you've seen the basics.
Little to no story, lifeless repetition labelled as "exploring" and puzzles hardly worth thinking about, a solid mediocre 5.

    • Everything destroys you at the beginning of the game, but at the end, you’re extremely overpowered and the entire game becomes a joke

    • Ganon is just a mindless monster that for some reason doesn’t talk; the boss fight against him is also way too easy

    • Horses are completely useless

    • Despite what the story implies, there is literally no sense of urgency to defeat Ganon

    • Enemy variety is absolutely terrible

    • Some costumes and weapons are locked behind amiibo

I don’t see why it has so many 10/10 reviews.

The divine beasts were also too short, and were all the same. The bosses inside the divine beasts were also the same, and so was Calamity Ganon. I did enjoy the side quests, however, I felt as though the game relied too heavily on the open world, shrines and side quests to make it longer. Yes, Majora's Mask did the same thing, however, it was done so that the side quest all helped with the main quest. In Breath of the Wild, the side quests were just for the sake of it. I also missed all of the regular items.
To conclude, while I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, I hope that Nintendo revert back to the more traditional style of games later on, as I believe that they are way better.

This is a Zelda game but it has got its flaws. They should be mentioned and the eternal Nintendo nostalgia should be put aside because it has metaphorically become a source of sickness.

Starting with the hardware and the frame drop is a source of frustration. A company the size and economic power of Nintendo should be doing better than this. It should be avoiding the eternal excuse it is the game experience that matters. Lower quality graphics can be ok but frame drop is unacceptable, anti-game experience and repeat frustrating.

Continuing with the gameplay, the one-shot game overs and the constant breaking of the weapons is another source of frustration. It even goes beyond frustration and generates anger in the player. Travelling long distances for exploring and suddenly getting one-shot is not nice. This is a first open world for Zelda and the flaws are more than visible. The balance in the open-world playing experience is not there.

Moving on to cinematics and voice-acting. Once again the experience lacks completeness. There is voice acting in some scenes but once the cinematic is over it goes back to the text boxes. Compared to a game like AC where there is voice acting even during gameplay e.g. when following an ally, Nintendo is lagging far behind in this sector.

Lastly, there is a robotic style of developing a game from the side of Nintendo. What models have we got in our inventory? this and that ok how to combine them together? ok then now use them. First make the models, then robotically dress it up with some reused storyline. Does it fit? Who cares? After creating a story timeline in Hyrule Historia probably for selling a few copies of a book, now it is scrapped just like that. The story is meshed up again.

And my final thoughts: It does not mean that a pioneer in the pixel-era of gaming should continue getting praise even for underperforming open-world modern games, just because they pioneered back in the 80s. If a game like Far Cry gets 8 points on average, when it is much more advanced in gameplay balance and cinematics and overall feeling, then Breath of the Wild is half that and can only get a 4 from my side.

    Things it did right:
+ Huge world with lots of little details, probably where Nintendo spent most of their time in development
+ The go-anywhere-and-possibly-be-undergeared motif of LoZ1 was translated to a 3D game alright enough
+ Made the mastersword rely on heart containers to acquire it, much like the White Sword or Magical Sword from LoZ1. Probably the only specific callback to LoZ1 that translated "perfectly".

    Things it tried:
    • Redesigned many characters, going as far as never giving Link a hat in promotional art and changing his iconic color from green to blue, or Ganon who is now a demon spider instead of a pig, only a pig in spirit. Moblins were turned into weird long snouted lanky unicorn pigmonsters, Hinox were turned into somewhat-more-generic Giants losing their iconic(?) Bomb-throwing attacks.
    • Tried voice acting but traded player-freedom of naming their character so spoken lines could needlessly refer to you as "Link".
    • The go-anywhere-model of LoZ1 lost almost all likeness to most other Zelda games because of the way it was implemented. In order to go anywhere and do anything from the start of the game, the player unfortunately gets all their tools at the start of the game so no proper dungeons with proper treasures or item equipment that would otherwise lock one player from accessing things another player could gated via game progress- which also isn't necessarily even "true" to how LoZ1 accomplished it.

    Things it did wrong:
    - Traded the sweeping and catchy good music of traditional Zelda design even going as far back as the original LoZ1 for lighter, emptier, less-frequent ambient sounds to adapt to the world's environment of "musical" cues and reliance on things like stealth. As an original game this might have worked, but the tradeoff meaning no great "Zelda music" as many expect from the franchise doesn't work to a benefit. The weaker audio design fits their game design, but the weaker audio design of their game design doesn't fit "Zelda".
    - From a series known for streamlined access to health replenishment via bottles full of potions and frequent floating hearts, placing all healing behind food collection and menu access gets in the way of player intention within the world and only serves to distract the player or otherwise pad the adventure with unnecessary filler. Trivial for a series that virtually invented the concept behind the Estus Flask from the Souls games. Such an estus-flask-like method of healing would have more accurately emulated the streamlined healing of past Zelda games while still allowing them to get away from hearts in bushes and pots.
    - Related to food collection, the game design around killing simple non-zelda scenery animals unrelated to the variety of Zelda enemies for various Raw Meat items is woefully unnecessary and out-of-place for any Zelda game much less any Nintendo game. This concept was so poorly implemented to even include killing foxes and wolves for meat, in our modern society where both have been domesticated as pets or otherwise crossbred with domestic dogs to produce canines that look identical to their wild counterparts. Whether the player has the intent or not to harm them, they can be killed by enemies anyway. "Eating dog meat" is a gut-wrenching phrase I never imagined would describe an action in any videogame much less one from Nintendo, and has forever irreparably damaged my otherwise flawless opinion of the franchise and its creators.
    - No actual sprawling dungeons from a series known for it's sprawling dungeons is a weakpoint. The shrines, although numerous and fairly uniquely designed in terms of their puzzles, unfortunately still manage to all look identical and don't offer the same expected gameplay layout or scenic/regional design as cohesive interconnected hallways and rooms from traditional dungeons in other Zelda games. Even the four Divine Beasts operate more like "slightly larger shrines" than something remotely close to being considered a true "dungeon", with Hyrule Castle being the only "true" dungeon.
    - Enemy variety compared to past Zelda games and even many modern games is staggeringly low. All enemies and bosses counted, there are only 23 different monsters that are copied-pasted-and-recolored or given a slightly different weapon or elemental attribute to create the majority of Breath of the Wild's "variety". Even going back to Ocarina of Time, there were 46 unique enemies and bosses counted together, not including recolored or reskinned variations; and of course each mainline Zelda game since Ocarina and before Breath of the Wild has had virtually the same variety if not more. There are actually more background scenery animal species in this game than unique enemies, meaning the only true visual variety that exists is in the scenery itself - a negative only because enemy combat is a necessity.

And I don't even like Minecraft, i'm just sayin this Hyrule is going to get old fast because the world itself is the only thing that got a lot of attention in development. There are re-used assets everywhere, from multiple recolored/reskinned variations of enemies to even there functionally being 6 or 7 different kinds of weapons in the game that were negligently forced into strict attack sets of shortsword, longsword or spear. Reused animations, reused monsters, reused assets everywhere. Even the mastersword explodes into blue dust like every other destructable weapon despite its plot mechanic of "running out of energy" to be returned to your inventory rendered useless for 20 minutes.

The game is as wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle.

    1. The characters are fun and wacky, exactly what I expect from a good Zelda game.
    2. The stamina system is a really good mechanic and balances with health as a choice when 'levelling up'.
    3. The difficulty is appropriate and creates a good challenge.

I played through so much just because I know there is hidden stuff in the game that I would love to go through and enjoy. It's just a horrible slog through bad game mechanics and dull atmosphere to get to anywhere and you're constantly getting impeded by mini-puzzles that consistently feel like a chore than a valuable part of the game. All this as well as the fact that the game mechanics seem to be designed to discourage you to do things like fight or progress at all. Now, let me go over the cons:

    1. There are no dungeons and shrines are awful. Most of them have unbalanced fights or horribly gimmicky 'puzzles' where the puzzle is bad controls making it hard for you. Where are the long themed dungeons with awesome boss fights that is literally most of the reason most people play Zelda? There aren't.
    2. Crafting, camping, hunting. Survival stuff detracts from the fun of the game, it's not necessary, but you are playing at a disadvantage by not engaging with it, so I either make the game hard for myself or not fun for myself. Bad set of choices, there.
    3. The music is boring and doesn't inspire anything of either fun exploration or the stand-out songs of a Zelda franchise.
    4. The weapon system is awful. They consistently break, meaning due to the lack of EXP or anything, there is literally no value in engaging with enemies unless it is absolutely necessary.
    5. You get all usable skills at the beginning of the game. So where is my sense of progression and fun classic Zelda items like the Hookshot to keep adding new mechanics to the game to aid progressions and keep it exciting alongside the story? Shh, that would have been a good idea (and they're avoiding those).
    6. The map is huge. Great if you're into a massive time-sink. But most of the world is empty and everything is just really far away, so it takes insanely boring runs to get anywhere - when you do get to a shrine you can fast-travel, but you have to get there first. And. It. Isn't. Fun.
    7. The WiiU version has frame-rate drops and some long loading times. A minor gripe, but worth noting.
    8. Most of the game looks the same. It feels like a grind. Shrines look the same, most of the areas have similar areas with slightly different looking trees. Given how big the world is. It really loses the desire to explore very quickly.

Overall, I cannot recommend this game at all. The most it does is vaguely remind me of other Zelda games I would rather be playing. Very disappointing title, I am very upset that I couldn't find it in me to have any fun with this.

As of April 15 2017 and over 10,000 user votes on both platforms, an analysis of the number of people who rated the game positively (rather than mixed/negative) relative to other Zeldas showed some interesting findings Nintendo should take on board. 1 in 3 people, globally, didn’t rate it positively compared to 1 in 10 for major 3D Zelda games of the past (OoT, MM, WW, TP). Older titles like Link to the Past and its modern sequel, Link Between Worlds, are both also ranked at only 1 in 14 and 1 in 10, respectively, not rating it positively. This clearly shows that age or format of a Zelda game is less important than whether it employs a winning formula—a formula for enjoyment, satisfaction, and fun. Breath of the Wild along with Skyward Sword are the LEAST-LIKED major 3D Zelda games Nintendo have ever released by a substantial margin according to these figures, despite what the North American-centric internet media headlines claim, or what the numerically insignificant ‘critic’ reviews suggest. Good gaming formulas work; trying something new for the sake of it using the Zelda IP, just because a few loud mouths claim the ‘Zelda formula’ is ‘getting tired’, is a recipe for losing respect. After two poor major 3D Zeldas in a row now, I personally can’t buy another one until I’m convinced that it’s good from other sources. It’s a good job the astoundingly enjoyable Link Between Worlds was released recently, otherwise I’d have lost all hope for the series. LttP is an utterly marvellous experience; take note of why and please use that in future Zelda experiences. The game was legendary because of the stunning quality of the musical composition and scoring, the gameplay pace, and the rate at which fun things happened during uninterrupted gameplay. It was tight, original, had a very high ‘fun-density’, and oozed character—all completely absent in SS and BoTW…

Really didn’t enjoy this game despite being very open-minded about it in the run up. It was a mediocre game in itself, and a very, very poor Zelda, relative to the best of past games, new and old. The Metacritic user data also shows this to be the case.

    My biggest complaints are:
    • No sense of designed adventure; felt more like a large complex technical demo than a well-crafted adventure experience. Like Skyward Sword and unlike any 3D Zelda game before it, I established no emotional attachment. This was principally due to the lack of a high quality, emotive, lyrical musical composition written by a master composer who understands the emotional language of music. I can’t stress this enough. Kondo was clearly inspired by the work of geniuses Goldsmith and Williams in the mid 70s-mid 80s in the movie world, and is himself a genius, with strengths in lyricism. This game was emotionally dead and I didn’t bond with it at all.

    • Didn’t feel like I accomplished anything meaningful while playing. Felt like a repetitive grind-fest or a slow, arduous, boring trudge through a mostly baron world. Climbing in particular was absolutely not fun; it was slow and often frustrating. Wandering around collecting stuff for the sake of it, to later grind blindly into materials for things which wear out in 2 minutes. Many gamers around the world don’t like farming—certainly not in a Zelda game! Of the 140 hours sank into this game to achieve 99% completion, about 120 were grinding and walking around/climbing in the empty world, not enjoying myself. I forced myself to get through it because I’d paid so much for it.

    • Cut scenes added very little and voice narration was disruptive to any emotional attachment. Due to the do-anything-without-restriction approach, I also saw them out of order; I saw key characters before I’d met them and lost any sense of story linearity—much like reading a book random chapter at a time.

    • Being one hit-killed, even when experienced, was deeply frustrating. Making a game challenging doesn’t mean the fun has to be taken out of it. This was just bad design.

    • The Wii U features being dropped (causing a delay in release) so they wouldn’t outshine the retrograde Switch console version was offensive and the game suffers for it—particularly when you contrast to how the beautifully done Wind Waker HD remake utilised the second screen.

    • The tedious weapon breaking every few hits made the combat a completely unsatisfying chore. There was no incentive to work for a nice weapon because it breaks in the same few hits as a plain old tree stick.

I could go on and list several other major points… Many others have said similar things in the non-polarised mixed reviews. I just don’t understand why so many people thought this game was outstanding. Less would have been much, much more.

Also the story is so cliche and stupid. 'Hey link, you are the hero of the prophecy. Save the princess, save the world'

Why the low score? Several reasons. The first are completely hotfix-able if Nintendo wishes to resolve them.

The Yiga Clan Hideout. You will be forced to play stealthy or die to one-hit enemies. Okay, fine. Spend 20 minutes or so learning how to get to the final boss the first time. Then spend 5-10 minutes doing it again. And that is only if you were lucky enough to save once manually

And that is only if you were lucky enough to save once manually as I did. Why? Oh, yeah. Master Kohga has a tendency to despawn if he is hit at the right moment with an arrow. The Yiga Clan Hideout is ridiculous to begin with and we are forced to suffer this insult to injury. Forced stealth with one-hit capable enemies who somehow prevent Fairy or Zora revival is just ridiculous in-and-of itself. Add this mess with the boss to the mix and we have this intolerable circumstance.

Tip for Nintendo: Please fix the boss. And fix the entire encounter while you are at it please. It is beyond maddening.

Weapon durability is horrendous. Weapons rarely last a single fight. Yet somehow your armor is completely unbreakable. I guess we should just swing our armor at the enemies in the game. And if only we could craft weapons from the same materials our amazing unbreakable armor is made from to make weapons.

Tip for Nintendo: Increase weapon durability. Give us a durability status bar. And, give us more options for later weapons what are unbreakable made from the material of our armor which is apparently immune to breaking.

Your horse. Somehow in a land of magic and miracles, your horse must strictly obey the laws of in-game physics. You cannot summon your horse. If your horse is not in range when you whistle it will not come when called. Okay, so, get back to your horse or get to a stable and board and then take your horse. Fine. The annoyance? The annoyance comes with how often you must leave your horse behind. And then, either getting back to the poor beast becomes a chore or starting back, once again, from the nearest stable.

Tip for Nintendo: How about, you just whistle and the horse enters stage left; or behind? It would work just fine.

Dungeons? Trials. Okay 120 trials. 4 divine beast encounters. Sadly all lack the proper dungeon look and feel. I am fine with them. I just wish they had included a handful of solid dungeon content worthy of previous Zelda titles.

Tip for Nintendo: Please do not forget the dungeon content.

Music is atmospheric but overall lacking.

Tip for Nintendo: Bring back more sections with catchy Zelda-themed music.

Finally, the story. Yes, I know, it is Zelda. The excuse is harder to make in 2017 than it would have been in 2002 or 1995 or even 1985. The story is okay. Not bad. Not great. Just okay. This last one has no easy fix so I will simply accept that this is Zelda and that Nintendo is stuck on that front.

Tip for Nintendo: While I am not expecting the Witcher 3 in terms of content or subject matter, try taking the Zelda approach for a more expansive story and not just an expansive game world.

In short, if they fix these issues I will reconsider. Until that point, too many bugs or just plain poorly chosen game design sections to recommend.

Gameplay; this is supposed to be a videogame i.e. it's meant to be fun and entertaining. It instead turns out to be the most boring and repetitive game I have ever played. I had heard of Zelda's reputation for recycling dugeons; wow how many times do I have to redo the same things again? It's as if I have no life besides playing videogames or what? It's just a walking, climbing simulator with annoying mechanics such as temperature and wearing down of weapons and tools. Ok, clearly wearing down is not a bad thing but in Zelda it's a painstaking process. If this was Minecraft at least you could repair just about anything but now this? I quit about 3 hours in.

Graphics: Let's start with the positive: very nice artstyle and physics. The negative? Everything else. This looks like a game from 2012 at best. The original Wii U's Zelda tech demo was soooo much nicer than this. It's a tragedy that Ubisoft and others get crucified over minor graphical downgrades and this piece of crap gets a free pass... and GOTY? What ?

Verdict: 2/10. Even a 5/10 I could think of reasons to return to. This? Nope. This game does not deserve GOTY in fact it would not have attracted my attention if it hadn't and my life would be better for it.

Recommendation; buy the console and game at a place like Costco this way you can return no questions asked if you are as disappointed as I was.

With such a big world at least the settlements should be fun right? No. They have minimal NPC and side quest and you form no attachment to them. Compared to previous games - Skyward Sword and Wind Waker , Breath of the wild seems devoid of life.

I've bought the game full price and never finished it. I've played some bad games with good story but here the story is so non-existent that I have no desire to see to its conclusion.

It seems that after development hell the game was still rushed to playable state. It is ok, bo certainly not game of the year. I look at the scores and ponder how so many people can so in love with it. It all feels like a chore, a menial job. Perhaps it is a way to escape stress like soap operas or smoking.

I watched a youtube video a while ago, it explains that each event is spread out by exactly 40 seconds. That source of praise for some is probably a large part of why I hate the game. The game survives by using it's metronome like action to turn you into a mindless zombie. Because of it the exploration is not fun, it's just easy to lose track of time doing it.

The main reasons this series gets undue praise is that it's absorbing and big. Both act to the detriment of the game.

Continuing with the absorbing nature of the game, the pacing of 40 seconds actually acts to the detriment of the exploration. Dead space is important, and constantly spacing things out by roughly 40 seconds means there is no dead space. Everything is routine. Furthermore the content that you come across every 40 seconds is not of any value. There rare things that do have value are often pointed to directly by waypoints.

This leads me to my next point, the world is big but vapid. There's not enough dead space in the game, but you could also say the majority of the game is dead space. There's so much stuff in the game but almost none of it has any merit. Exploration only works if there's something to find, and the few worthwhile things I found do not make it worth wading through the hours and hours of worthless things to find.

That's most of my criticism for the game, the core gameplay isn't fun because the finding of things in regular intervals lulls you into a trance that makes you not cognisant of the environment and there's just nothing of value to find.

Aside from that THE ENDING SUCKED. Nobody of their right mind could like that ending, an easy bossfight makes all the work of freeing the divine beasts feel redundant and afterwards you're greeted with a second boss-fight that barely surpasses a cut-scene in difficulty.

Princess Zelda gets next to no characterisation despite me hearing praise for her character repeatedly, and honestly development for her would be far better rewards for exploration than a shrine. That said, what bits of development we do get are also terrible. They're barely better than her staring at the camera and explaining "oh boy do I feel like a failure because I haven't been able to summon the power of the goddess". If we were given a lot more cutscenes that were less direct about it, it would've made her into a far more compelling character.

The shrines are complete garbage, I'm literally looking at a review that calls them "fun". The biggest challenge in the shrines is sitting through the loading screen at each end.

Every town is marked on the map, making stumbling upon them impossible and they're most of what's worth finding.

Your horse is basically never around (unless you buy the DLC) making traversing long empty fields a pain. It'd be great if we could mount a large wolf-like creature that'll follow us up cliffs.

Your powers don't start recharging until you've used up all three charges and don't progress any further even if you use the in-game time-passing functionality.

All in all I regret my time with BOTW. Lame exploration, lame world, lame story, lame shrines (which add up to about 8 hours of my 70 hours in game), lame Princess Zelda, lame horse, lame experience. There are a few quests in the game that work, and a few divine-beast related cutscenes and I really like that each town has it's own musical theme but that's not enough to carry a 70 hour game that isn't fun.

Dungeons are gone. You have shrines that are very short puzzles rewarding an item you can trade for hearts or stamina. Probably is they all look the same with bland interiors. There are 4 mechanical creatures that are slightly longer versions of shrines but the only real dungeon is hyrule castle.

Its also annoying that the inventory is micro management heavy, item break often so your constantly swapping. You can expand your inventory but again it involves finding seeds and trading them in. If the world was more interesting this might have been fun.

The climbing mechanic isn't fun. Its tedious and repetitive. The towers you have to climb are essentially less interesting versions of the towers from far cry 4.

Breath of the Wild can’t be compared to the likes of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim because it’s not trying to be those games -- it’s a Nintendo game -- and series -- all grown up. It has a lot to offer and will keep you engaged for lengthy periods of time. If you’re playing on Switch as you absolutely should be, then you can also Zelda wherever you go. It’s arguably not the best Zelda game, but damn, it might be the most polished, and the most ambitious.

Does it have the best combat system in the world? No. Is it the best looking game out there? No. Does it have the best RPG soundtrack ever? No. Can the game make you feel like you are eight years old again? Hell yes. It certainly had that effect with me. It has been a long time since exploring, fighting, and adventuring has so consistently brought a smile to my face. Breath of the Wild is such a wonderful experience that once you play it, you will likely never look at open world games the same again.
