This is my favorite Zelda game by far. I think that it was right for Nintendo to delay this game just so they could make it better. I'm really impressed how they got all this stuff to fit into a Wii U disc. And i really like that they don't have a long tutorial of how to do everything, like in other Zelda games. It just puts ju right in the Shrine of Resurrection and let you go anywhere. Which is probably my favorite part about the game. It's not like a giant boulder in the way, so that you need bombs to pass. Everything is free. After the Great Plateau, you can even try to defeat Ganon right away (even though that would be pretty hard). Some things that i don't really like about the game is the bland music. There's like a couple of piano notes played here and there but other than that there's not much music. The dungeon bosses were a little lame as well. Almost all of them are just shooting arrows at them. And the weapons breaking can be annoying. But other than those minor flaws, the game is amazing. A must have game for the Wii U and the Switch. Anyway, this game is a **** gem. If you are into the true open world genre. This game can't really be compared to fc, skyrim and horizon as this game is not linear in any way except the first few shrines. In FC, skyrim and horizon, you have loads of unlockable side quests but the main quest is still linear. In breath of the wild you can run straight up to the main boss in your underpants, if you please. Alot of complaints are about the "emptiness" of the world. There is no emptiness in the overworld. There are 120 shrines to find and 900 koroks, well hidden throughout the map. And besides that, you can always find resources for elixirs in the tall grass. Critters like hightail lizards and restless crickets. Or even chop some wood or farm some wheat or rice. Mine some ores and gems. Clear enemy camps for treasure. It's riddled with things to discover.

The durability system is somewhat irritating to start, but quickly becomes a nuisance. Enemies always drop weapons, you learn where to find the good ones *cough*sheikahsensor*cough* + the legendary blade.

It's not a perfect game. There is none in existence. I'm not saying you should buy a switch just for this game if you're not THAT into zelda or open world/non linear games. BUT I will highly recommend this game to people who have already bought a wii u or a switch. And maybe to people who have a 200$/€ to spare for a wii u and zelda. It's a complete game changer for the series. But not perfect.

I love the games that have logic, for example in botw, the metal equipment that attracts lightning, the hot, cold, and burning status the slippery in the mountains and every climbable thing, the normal arrows that can transform in fire arrows using something flammable, and many other things. Also, I like the story, but unless you get every memory you will not understand it, my recommendation is to find every memory first, and then go fight Ganon. (If you have troubles trying to find out where each memory is, check the picture and try to translate the text in the upper right of the photo, that will give you a hint).
How many Easter eggs, and throwbacks the game has. For example the thre dragons that you can find in the game, the ruins of famous places, and many other things.
Other thing that I found great is how realistic the horses are, and the vatiety of them, how each horse has different attributes, I can see that they've put a lot of effort in making the horses look realistic.
All the tedious thing that you have to do to complete the game 100%, collecting the 900 korok seed, or Finding all the hidden shrines, and taking a a picture of everything for example.

What I don't like that much is that there are some creatures that are much harder to kill than ganon, for example the lynels, also I don't like that much how fast weapons break, like literally, with 10 swing almost any weapon breaks, other think that id didn't like at all, like not even a little is what happens after you defeat ganon, and no, I'm not talking of going back to the entrance, I'm talking about the story after you defeat him, also, I HATE that there is no after story (yeah, I know that many games don't have one, but they could have changed that). What I would do is add an after story where you can live with the princess, or find something to revive everyone, or a mission to help build the hyrule castle back or at least see the caste cleaned and beatiful, and last but nor least, the creatures may be tough at first, but then they are to easy

P.D: If think that the game is easy, there are a lot of things you can do as a challenge, first of all, eliminate the map, the time, the thermometer, and don't upgrade your gear

But for what it's worth, Nintendo has done an absolutely fantastic job at bringing Zelda into an entirely new genre. No open world/sandbox game even comes close to this one in terms of its exploration. The world around you feels both alive and yet dead at the same time, giving a real sense of depth to the events the games tells you about through it's story that lead to Hyrule being in it's current state. The characters are all wonderful and filled with personality and the weapon durability system is fine, despite what many have said.

There's plenty to discover and do in this game and along the way you're accompanied by a very ambient soundtrack that isn't too intrusive or out of place, but definitely isn't like the music you remember from older Zelda games. There are very few big dungeons but there are 120 small shrines, which are each a puzzle of their own. Every area of breath of the wild feels different from the scorching hot Gerudo desert to the extremely cold and snowy tundra. Each area has its own positives and negatives, with certain enemies native to certain regions and the cold and hot both being able to damage link at there most extreme.

It took me 150+ hours to do everything this game had to offer, which I would say was more than enough for this kind of game. Not a single second of that time I consider wasted. I feel like this game provides everything necessary for a full fledged Zelda experience in an open world.

An absolutely incredible experience worth every penny paid and every second played.

Right out of the gate the game's theme of breaking typical Zelda conventions shows. The moment you hop out of the shrine of resurrection and view the vast depths of Hyrule is mesmerizing. I believe this moment is iconic. The Great Plateau is a game design marvel. Tutorials in open world games are just a hindrance but you can see how the developers crafted a wonderful tutorial. The Great Plateau teaches you about shrines, towers, Guardians, and combat. It has an abundance of detail so exploration in it makes it enjoyable. It's the most linear part of the game yet it still feels non-linear. You can attack the shrines in any order, discover enemy encampments and gear at any point. I appreciate how the game sets up props you can use in combat situations that highlight the superb physics engine.

After The Great Plateau, the game truly opens up. The fact you can go and destroy Ganon at any point is amazing because it lets you play the game at your pace and skill. I think Hyrule is a regionally very diverse and it contains so much to explore. I'll admit after 70 hours it becomes a little repetitive because you just go finding shrines, korok seeds, and towers. However, those first 70 hours are magical. Finding overworld bosses, watching enemies detailed animations, finding crazy loot, and discovering wonderful landscapes is so addictive. Climbing, especially, is extremely fun. Breath of the Wild is at its best when this beauty of exploration glistens off the screen.

Combat in this game is overall pretty good. The environments in the overworld when you use the physics engine for creative kills is super rewarding and fun. The normal swordplay with the 3 main variants of weapons is fun. The one-handed sword, spears, and two-handed heavy swords are fun at first. The perfect shield bash has fairly strict timing, especially compared to Skyward Sword's mechanic. The problem with combat is the perfect dodge. It works really well with swords and two-handed swords however with spears the timing feels bugged and too easy to use. The flaw in the perfect dodge is apparent to the final boss. I won't spoil anything but I will say that many times I found I performed a perfect dodge that didn't deserve to go into the cool matrix-esq animation. The main flaw with combat is weapon durability. I found that in early the durability was fun because you could smash your broken weapons into an enemies skull and pick up other weak weapons on the fly. However, in the later game, you have really strong weapons that feel like they break way too quickly and sometimes it's hard to find equally rare weapons. I understand the reason why durability is in the game. It makes you master a multitude of different weapons and I think it does achieve this. I don't think durability is as bad as people make it out to be but it does have some flaws. The bow combat is snappy. On the mention of quick and snappy, the UI, at least for hot keying weapons, is very fast and efficient. Overall combat in the game is good but there are some things the developers could have done to make it better.

The shrines and dungeons in the game are a mixed. The incentive to beat them is basically to obtain new skills and increase your heart and stamina capacity. Too many of the shrines are combat oriented. They become stale really fast. There are some really astonishing puzzles in the shrines and I found the main bulk of them to be excellent. I especially appreciate the ones that can be broken by using the mechanics the game gives to you. The mechanics the game gives are the runes. All three of them are used very well throughout the world, however, sometimes Cyanosis is a tad underutilized(but just a little). Anyways, I think it is a positive when you can use them to break puzzles because it highlights the beauty of multiple solutions. My main gripe with past Zelda games is that too many puzzles are one solution based. So this is a positive. The negative however are some of the shrines that having nothing but a chest. These shrines are good sometimes when a quest getting to them is really long and strenuous. Yet, some are a little too easy or short thus making the reveal of the shrine being a chest one kind of underwhelming. I won't spoil too much but the dungeons are really good puzzle wise, Length wise they are disappointing especially if you are a hardcore Zelda fan and have experienced some long amazing dungeons. The design of these dungeons is amazing, however somewhere in development length was discarded. The bosses are pretty good and don't rely on using the one dungeon item to beat them, like other Zeldas that are infamous for doing that.

I won't go into the story much but it's pretty shallow. For a game like this, I think it overall works because with such a non-linear structure it is hard to create an engaging story. It's not terrible but I still think something was missing to make it good.

The game is great but not flawless.

I've played many other Zelda games: the original one, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds. Breath of the Wild takes a step in a different direction from those games, as it focuses almost entirely on its open world exploration. It feels more like Skyrim in terms of gameplay, whileI've played many other Zelda games: the original one, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds. Breath of the Wild takes a step in a different direction from those games, as it focuses almost entirely on its open world exploration. It feels more like Skyrim in terms of gameplay, while still feeling very much like earlier Zelda games in terms of setting and atmosphere.

    Graphics: 10/10
It looks beautiful. One of the best-looking games on the market.

    Soundtrack: 7/10
Atmospheric and fitting soundtrack, with some nods to the soundtracks of previous Zelda games. It fits the game nicely, and it is well produced, but I wouldn't listen to it outside the game. It is ultimately just background music, and it can be rather forgettable.

    Story: 3/10
Breath of the Wild is not a story-oriented game, and it shouldn't be reviewed as one. The story really doesn't have much going for it, but that doesn't detract much from my opinion of the game. This is an exploration-oriented adventure game, and it doesn't need a good story. However, if you are considering buying this game hoping for a good story, you might want to reconsider. It's basically a 30 minute story in a 200 hour game. Every other Zelda game I've played since and including A Link to the Past, has had a better story. I won't spoil anything, but the game starts with Link waking up after a long slumber, and he has lost his memory. The problem is, all the story bits happened before Link wakes up, i.e. before the game starts, i.e. it's all exposition. This exposition is told to you mostly through short memory snippet cutscenes. The cutscenes are quite nice and enjoyable, but they don't make a well told story. You start playing the game in what is technically the final resolution stage of the story.

    Gameplay: 9/10
This is the most important aspect of a game, and I believe it is the most subjective aspect to review. For me, Breath of the Wild has excellent gameplay. The world is filled with interesting places to explore, weapons to wield, enemies to fight, and things to do. You can even help build a new town! The game rewards exploration, which goes perfectly together with the large open world. The combat is very fun and not too complicated, and the difficulty level is perfect in my opinion. However, there is one mechanic that directly obstructs the exploration-focused gameplay: rain. Specifically, the fact that rain makes climbing nigh impossible. This is implemented intentionally at one point during the game, to prevent you from taking shortcuts through a certain area. And that's perfectly fine. But the random rain that occurs throughout the game is anything but fine. Exploration is the key focus of this game, and climbing is one of the key methods for exploring the world. It should NOT be compromised for the added realism of a random rain mechanic. That, along with some recurring frame rate drops, keeps this game from getting a perfect 10 for gameplay.

    Overall: 9/10

My own personal play time of roughly 100 hours was some of the most fun I've had playing a game in my life. Every action I took was done when and where I wanted - absolute freedom to play in Hyrule how I wanted. So much freedom in a game is bound to create very personal experiences with a game, with every player having a unique adventure and with their own stories to tell in how they managed to tackle a group of moblins or solve one of the 120 shrines.

The fact that BotW is so personal to whomever plays it is likely one of the contributing factors for the rating a player gives this game. I personally never came across any game-breaking glitches, and don't actually recall having any frame-drop issues. But, that might be due to the way I chose to play the game - little to no combat, high stealth, and lazily walking everywhere I went. I can see how another player who chose to take on BotW in a completely different way might be confronted with different issues, which in itself challenges the "freedom" granted by this game. If choosing to play BotW in certain ways results in a higher likelihood of problems, then it seems to restrict what players can actually do in the game.

As an avid Dark Souls/Bloodborne fan, I enjoyed the flavor of combat in this title. Battles had weight, with enemies dealing HEAVY amounts of damage, and weapons being all-too fragile when in a pinch. The score is thoughtful and subtle, the world is gorgeous and varied, and the story (though thin) has a pretty heavy ambience to it that felt darker and more oppressive to me than it likely did for most other players.

BotW is not without its problems. The voice acting is bad, but not even in a charming "so-bad-it's-good" way ala Silent Hill 2 or House of the Dead. The monotony in a large percentage of the shrines can grind gameplay to almost a halt. The lack of ANY non-breakable melee options is frustrating; even something like a broken hilt or weak knife would be better than being completely unarmed without breaking the game's difficulty. Other players have found ways to break combat with armor buffs, but a casual playthrough like mine didn't see much opportunity to increase armor stats.

In the end, a 9/10 is my subjective score for this game. I have so few issues with it, and can't wait to return to it. It's hard to give an objective score because BotW, like the rest of the Zelda series, is very personal. For those who enjoy BotW, they love it. For those who don't, they, well, don't. If you have a WiiU, there is really no reason to let this one go untried. Rent it. Buy it. Borrow it.

Nintendo decided to change its approach in terms of game structure for the latest Legend of Zelda game. The series has always been an open world adventure but with a regular path of progression which spurs the storyline forward. Aside from various skips and breaks, the game progresses in a certain order. Breath of the Wild (BotW) takes the open-world approach to the next level. When I first booted up the game I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Having seen the previews for it, I had a rough idea of the gameplay style but nothing could have prepared me for what I got from this game. Upon stepping out of the Chamber of Resurrection and seeing the massive world Nintendo had put before me, I was left speechless. Normally with open world games there is so much to do and explore that I often find myself feeling overwhelmed. But this was different. Instead of feeling brain-cramped with everything going on, I felt a surging sense of excitement.

Despite the occasional technical issue/lag spike, this is by far one of the best games I have ever played. The only other thing I could think of that holds it back is the lack of button remapping and the atrocious English dub, which can thankfully be changed to the original Japanese track after a free download. It deserves all of the praise it has been getting. Kudos to the developers.

Breath Of The Wild is one the best Zelda games, the open world is beautiful and vast, and there's a lot of things to do to explore it. I don't think this is as good as Ocarina of Time, mainly bacause the story wasn't so great and the dungeons were extremely short.

I love the independence of this game. You have complete control of where you want to go, and what you want to do. There is no companion saying you should do a certain quest or go to a particular location.

I was worried when I saw Zelda go with an open-world approach, but I really shouldn't have been. They did it before and (like this game) it works perfectly.

I bought this game the day it came out along with all the Amiibos, and well, I hold no regrets. In fact, the week it came out I pretty much did nothing else until I beat it. I must have sunk at least 100 hours into it and I enjoyed every single of it.

The open-world really was a great idea! For reference, the game never forces you to do anything you personally don't want to it. If you want, (after you get the glider) you can go to the final boss. In my opinion, this is the game that did it the best. Sorry Witcher and Skyrim, but in my honestly opinion Breath of the Wild has to have the funnest open-world to travel in. For reference, I got bored of Witcher and while I had fun with Skyrim, I had to use a horse most of the time in Elder Scrolls. I know that this may sound weird, but I never found a need to travel on horse-back. That is how much I had fun travelling through the world. I tried riding on a horse, but I found myself missing more things then if I just traveled on foot or glided through the air.

I never got bored in Breath of the Wild. I always found something to do no matter how small or tiny it seemed.

I could go on, but this is a game that I feel like you should experience yourself. If you have a Nintendo Switch or a Wii U, you should own this game.

Breath of the Wild has a beautiful and enthralling art style, engaging gameplay, and the most gripping open world I think any game has featured in a long time. Additionally, it is the most mechanically stable open-world game I have ever played. Between the tolerable load times, lack of noteworthy performance issues and the absence of other glitches typical of Bethesda's flagship titles, this game is an absolute masterpiece that lives up to the hype that surrounded it leading up to its release.

The only negative I can speak to regarding Breath of the Wild is what I saw as a lack of replayability. After clearing all the shrines and completing the DLC, I had almost no desire to return to this version of Hyrule. However, I have almost no doubt that the first time you play through Breath of the Wild, you will enjoy yourself no matter what other games you like. This is easily one of the greatest Zelda games of all time, and I would not shy away from calling it one of the greatest open-world games of all time.

It's tempting to rate this game lower because it was overhyped. It's a very good game, and worth playing. I had heard it described like dark souls meets zelda. The major problem is the fighting mechanics in this game aren't nearly as precise as Dark Souls. It feels like button mashing most of the time. Climbing the Sheika towers gets old immediately.

You should still play it though.

Impressively styled and expansive world with plenty of landscape variety and distinct biospheres. Settlements have character, whether they're majestic superstructures or quaint villages. Combat is simple but compelling and there are plenty of opportunities to use the environment to influence a fight. Shrine and 'dungeon' puzzles are for the most part fun and usually intuitive. I bought the Switch specifically for this game and I'm not disappointed.

However it's not /all/ sunshine and rainbows.

The inclusion of ubisoft towers is a cardinal sin for open world games at this point and you wouldn't expect such a tired, cliched 'feature' from Nintendo.

Shrines themselves are strangely scattered across the landscape as if an afterthought, only there for the benefit of the player and not at all 'integrated' into the world.

Weapon durability is handled terribly and serves only to force pauses in combat and add another layer of inventory management, and leads to decisions on the cost to reward ratio of most combat encounters being heavily slanted towards 'cost' - the loot dropped by the vast majority of enemies isn't worth the durability loss.

Character progression seems piecemeal and relies on your desire to scrounge across the world looking for shrines and seeds.

The dodge mechanic is for some bizarre reason a jump rather than a roll, which adds an unpleasant floaty element to otherwise enjoyable combat.

There's also an optimisation issue that surfaces when the console is docked. You'll see frequent frame rate drops when playing on a TV that don't arise in handheld configuration, which is bizarre for a system touted as a home console.

It looks like a long list and reads like most complaints are fairly petty or typical of open world games - and they are quite small complaints, for the most part. I'd still entirely recommend it. However the flaws are there, you will notice them and they do (as far as I'm concerned) justify an 8 rather than a 9 or 10. If you're willing to drop £280 or your regional equivalent on a new system you're unlikely to find a better exclusive game so far this console generation.

While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first in its series, I have not played any other Legend of Zelda games other than Hyrule Warriors for the Nintendo Wii U. To see the creditsContext: I beat the game, on a Nintendo Switch. I have experience playing open world action-adventure games such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Red Dead Redemption 2. While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first in its series, I have not played any other Legend of Zelda games other than Hyrule Warriors for the Nintendo Wii U. To see the credits roll, took me roughly 40 hours, with about 30 deaths.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, obviously, you play as the franchise's heroic Link, battling sinister forces, teaming up with the champions of Hyrule, and reviving a dormant civilization. Breath of the Wild is a gritty, survivalist game that doesn't hold back when it comes to brutalizing players. Breath of the Wild eschews traditional safety nets and spreads heuristic-upsetting risks throughout the player's journey. Link dies if he gets too cold while trekking in snowy regions or too hot while trekking scorching regions. If equipped with a weapon or piece of armour made of metal, Link risks being struck by lightning in a Thunderstorm. He risks drowning or falling to his death if he swims or climbs without taking a break. And, since the entire world is virtually accessible once a player leave the initial area, if he wanders into an area with too-powerful monsters, he's pretty much doomed. Even weapons are transient, crumbling after a few tense battles. When Link's health begins to dwindle, players must forage for scraps before cooking over a campfire.

This creates one of the most expansive, gratifyingly adaptable playgrounds the medium has ever seen. Players can engage in tactical fights with a plethora of unique monsters. Or take images of the game's flora and animals with a Switch-like in-game tablet, named the Sheikah Slate, then follow audio pings to find whatever you're looking for. The Sheikah Slate provides expands the player's capabilities on all fronts. Bombs for combat, "magnesis," "cryonis," and "stasis" used for boss battles and puzzles, allow Link to tinker with reality itself. Instead of smashing crockery or cutting foliage for hearts (as in previous iterations), players tamper with a fascinating Minecraft-like economy of consumables and raw materials, balancing intuition against danger to concoct either nutritious or unpleasant concoctions and ability-boosting potions.

This is really what makes Breath of the Wild stick out from other games in the open world genre. The training wheels are removed very early on. For food, should Link find apples from a tree or hunt an animal? Entering a dangerous region, should Link complete missions, save rupees and purchase the right armour or stock up on monster parts and brew elixirs making Link prone to such environmental hazards? To generate stunning or humdrum menu items, mix chemicals in cook pots? Have you been looking for materials to dye your garments in technicolour? Scale massive rune-scrawled skyscrapers to glass zones for possible destinations? Scramble up a cliff to catch a glimpse of a looming rainstorm? Glide over Elysian landscapes in search of hidden ledges and caves? Breath of the Wild urges players to walk off the beaten road and simply explore.

Link will need to be prepared for everything. The distinction between foes and environment is frequently blurred in the most stylish of ways. For example, a tree toppled by hurling a bomb at a lumbering giant might be utilized by such foe to bash Link unconscious. Combat patterns, which often necessitate Witcher-style economy of mobility and the ability to react to unpredictable, multi-lethal opponents, are similar.

In the end, most of what propels Breath of Wild to the highest point in the series' history boils down to core Nintendo principles: subverting and tectonically recasting traditional conceptions to create an odyssey that is both intriguing and expansive. But there's a Zelda-like balance to the action that's missing from other open world adventures, a symmetry to its unequal but interwoven elements. The ingenious, puzzle-filled dungeons, the easy-to-grasp, hard-to-master combat system, diverse cast of charming characters, and numinous Japanese Shinto-inspired mythology are all part of the appeal. If you're more in store for an action-adventure, emphasis on action, Breath of the Wild might not be for you. The detailed narrative and constant puzzle solving needed to collect Spirit Orbs and defeat Divine Beasts can put off a player who has an action craze. I also believe that the game being developed for the dead Wii U resulted a Breath of the Wild that is rough on the edges, something that the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will resolve.

Let me start off by saying I bought a Wii U just to play this game. Not a Switch, mostly because I want to play Wii games as well, but I bought one mostly for Zelda: BotW. Was it worth it? Hell yea, it was!

This is honestly the best open world game I've ever played, & I've played a ton of open world games. Hands down, this one is the best one ever made. It's like playing through an actual living breathing world where people & animals interact with eachother, animals will graze in the grass, or take a nap, enemies will hunt boars, deer, & capture wild horses. People get pissed off when you wake them from a good sleep! Friggen Elder Scrolls never did that! A lot of games advertise living breathing worlds, but god damnit, this Zelda actually delivers it! People don't do the same daily routine, either! One day, you'll see someone working a field, the next day they'll stay home with their family, or go hunting, or explore some ruins! Not everyone, but a lot of people actually do this! Some even travel the world, just like you are! You will find people constantly traveling around in certain areas. Not everyone, but there's a lot of people who do. People run to try and get out of the rain, etc.

Enough about that though, the gameplay is where this game is at. The combat system is so well done & satisfying. It's also difficult, not Dark Souls hard, but still decently challenging. Some enemies will one shot you early on, but as you get used to it you will learn the in's & outs of combat & start reflecting lazers back at the death statues that are littered throughout hyrule. And by Death Statues, I mean they will kill you in one hit almost every time.

From what I gather, there are 4 dungeons total (not counting the hundreds of shrines) known as Divine Beasts. Each one is a mechanical animal that you traverse through & these ones house some very unconventional puzzles unlike any Zelda game before it. Trust me, your mind will bend to think of clever ways to tackle some of these puzzles.

This game isn't perfect, however. The game is littered with areas that drop FPS, especially in towns or when climbing trees or when it rains in some areas. The game especially lags in towns while it's raining. Luckily, the FPS isn't too bad (drops to around 20) which is still okay for being in a town since you're probably just running around shopping & stuff. None of these frame drops hindered my enjoyment of the game, either. The game is just that good. Also, the weapons tend to degrade a little to quick for my tastes. There's no shortage of extra weapons in the game, though. By the time you start to run low on weapons, you'll usually start to find one or to very decent replacements or even upgrades. The downside is they're gonna keep on breaking. This includes melee weapons, bows, & shields. Armor doesn't break at least & is upgradeable & customizable with dyes at a shop you'll eventually run into in one of the major towns. Also, the motion control segments are god awful & make me want to break my gamepad in half. **** these segments, Nintendo needs to shop forcing motion controls down our ****ing throats. Seriously, they are god awful.

This game isn't perfect, but gosh darn is it friggin' close to it! Worth buying a Wii U for, that's for sure! If it weren't for the god awful motion control segments, the weapons constantly breaking & the FPS issues, the game would be a 10/10.

What makes this game good is it's gameplay. Surely a 10 in that regard. A game of this size and length needs, at least imho, also a story to keep you invested. In that regard Zelda is only mediocre. Graphic wise it's also just in an average territory. Not that I would rate graphics too high in a rpg though. Overall I think

There is no hand holding and you get to explore everything in this rich world. Every corner hides a chest, a boss, a puzzle, a cool weapon, an environment you have to learn to deal with. There's plenty of surprising things along the way: taming horses, getting to know the characters, buying a house, riding a bear, getting new powers, finding new ways to take down ennemies, new ways to travel by land, air and water. The game is just filled with cool stuff to do and you never feel in an empty repetitive open world. It's very entertaining for hours and hours, there's always something new and fun to do. The cooking only is something you'll enjoy experimenting with a lot.
I'm disappointed by the performance, resolution and aliasing though and I'll admit that it takes a bit from the immersion and overall enjoyment.

The game is a joy to play and the new mechanics are fun. Only issues are the constant drops in fps and the poor anti-aliasing, they are really bad. Outside of that, the game is beautiful and an amazing experience ... too bad the wii u and switch can't handle it.

So although I think that this game is great, it's not for everyone. Another issue would be the frame rate. I can't blame the game for this though. Instead, I'll just blame it on Nintendo's low-level hardware. I'm still very impressed that this game was able to run on the Wii U the way it has been running.

But unfortunately, there are huge frame drops when the screen is heavily populated. When you enter a village, your frame rate can take large dips from 30 to 20 real fast.

This is a huge turn off. But it still won't turn me away from the game. Don't let the frame rate turn you away from the game either. You won't regret it. This is one of the best games I've played in a long time.

I'm not going to go too much into detail, because I still highly recommend this game. It's a great remaster of the Zelda franchise, and it brings back many memories from the other classic Zelda games.

The world of BotW is massive and beautiful. At first, I was worried that the open-world aspect of the game would make it feel empty, but instead I found that it is jam packed with detail. Everywhere you look there are small details, unique npcs, side-quests and interesting secrets to find.

Graphically, the game matches its amazing world design. BotW is the culmination of 30+ years of game design and it really shows. Every area of the world is unique and the incredible use of graphics technology turns everything you look into an amazing view. LOD pop-in isn't very noticeable, and the way grass is rendered and moves when you run through it is great. Unfortunately, all of this taxes the Wii U, and the console frequently throttles down to 20fps in certain areas. I'm looking forward to playing this game 10 years down the road, when Nintendo remasters it on a 4k console.

The largest failure was the disappearance of traditional dungeons in BotW. The Divine Beasts aren't enough of a challenge and aren't long enough, to be considered 'dungeons'. At least, not in the classical Zelda definition of a dungeon. In every Zelda game, you could always count on delving into amazingly detailed and designed dungeons, with interesting and challenging puzzles and bosses. BotW fails miserably here. The development time that could have gone into making epic dungeons was spent on small single-puzzle 'Shrines' that pose almost no challenge. I hope that the future DLC will be focused on bringing back epic dungeons, because without them this game only feels like half a Zelda game.

Overall, I love this game, but I wish Nintendo would have slowed down, and taken a little more time to develop it. I also wish they had hardware powerful enough to run this game at 1080p. I'm looking forward to the DLC, and I hope that patches can fix the fps drop issues.

    BUT...

I don't understand how everybody gives this game a 10 right of the bat when the STORY is a series of flashback, a non existent/present villain and gives you no sense of urgency to save Zelda. ( I understand that the open world and liberty to complete this game in any order you want makes it difficult story wise )

I recommend this game to anyone, even non-Zelda fans cause this one changes almost every aspects of what I've grown to know as a Zelda fan. It even made me think of Dark souls a bit in a sense that the environment can be your friend and your enemy,

With this said, I'm a bit disappointed because I was actually hoping for a lot of dungeons (No, I don't think Shrines count haha), and a bit more Zelda Lore ( Triforce, goddesses, a more human-like omnipotent Ganon )

Still, a great game and THE Best WiiU game available ( Come on, the Switch is not a great deal ATM. )

Hyrule itself is massive, a vast open plain ready to be explored. It has to be one of the biggest areas of land in any Zelda game ever, it may even be bigger than other open world games.

That's not to say the game is perfect, it does have its flaws. In the WiiU and Switch versions, frame rate can be an issue. And so can the camera at times. And, as this game was built on the WiiU, the 2nd screen is absent on the Switch version.

If you have a WiiU, I'd get Breath of the Wild on that system. It gives the console a fond farewell, and also saves you £280. In my opinion, there is no need to get a Switch just for Zelda.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a fun new entry into the Zelda series that remarkably departs from the formula set by the other 3D games. Though many choices have been questionable, the overall experience is one of quality.

In BotW, there are no more dungeons. Instead you have around 120 shrines (which are just puzzle rooms), four divine beasts, and Hyrule Castle. Hyrule Castle is the closes the game has to a legitimate dungeon, and even in that respect it falls flat. The divine beasts function more as a large puzzle with a boss at the end. So if you play Zelda for their fantastic dungeons, you'll be disappointed.

Combat was hit or miss, often you're fighting the camera. You see, your hops are relative to your position and the camera angle. Holding back on the stick won't do a backflip, you have to hold toward's Link's back. In certain fights, this becomes a frustration as the camera angle rapidly changes making that back hop you were planning on doing become a side hop, causing your dodge to fail. Other than camera issues, the actual combat itself, and the freedom allowed within it are refreshing. Your runes have many creative combat uses, the environment can change how certain elements react (like rain making lightning more potent), and allowing the player to jump whenever allows one to easily close gaps with a leap or make use of higher ground more easily.

Combat brings along the worst part of the game. Durability. In BotW everything you use (weapons, bows, shields) has durability. Unfortunately, weapons last a grand total of no time before they break and you're left fumbling through the menu to grab another. Not even the Master Sword is free from this, use it too much and it'll be "depleted of energy" and you'll have to wait for it to recharge. The biggest issue all this creates is that you'll never ever want to use any cool weapon you pick up, because you'll be afraid it'll break, and by the time you'd ever need to use it.. Well, you're now at the final boss and the Master Sword is all ready to go then.

BotW unfortunately has a major issue with fps. It seems to use double buffering vsync, if it can't maintain 30, then it immediately bumps down to 20 as the next stable target. In normal running around and exploring, this is mostly fine. But, the minute you enter combat or a town, things start chugging. Towns consistently run 15-20 fps, and fighting is all over the place. You can have 50 fights fine, and then the next will have multiple freezes as the Wii U tries to figure out what "stable framerate" means. Given the dev time, and the fact that BotW was developed for the Wii U first, this is completely unacceptable. They should've held stable framerate above visuals.

Despite these questionable decisions and technical issues, the overarching gameplay is great. BotW has one of the best sandbox set-ups out there. Literally everything is up for you to discover. While they do use the Ubisoft tower approach, you actually have to find things from the tower, rather than have towers spew out the entire map with store, objective, secret, and brothel locations, This gives BotW an organic method to discovery. On top of that, the vistas and environment are beautiful when the framerate is stable. Enemy animations and AI are top notch, with enemies learning your tricks and trying to use them against you (such as kicking bombs back at you). The armor system is nice, allowing a customization look.

Voice acting makes its first foray into Zelda, and is hit and miss. The VA's for the King, Urbosa, Daruk, and Rivali are pretty good, while Zelda and Mipha's VA's are very meh. The soundtrack, when it plays, is fantastic. The problem is that the soundtrack doesn't play very often, which is a damn shame.

The story itself is the epilogue really. The climax happened 100 years ago when you got your ass kicked. You discover most of the story through an interesting, and slightly frustrating, picture hunt. You find areas on your camera that give you memories, on top of the random ones you get right before each beast. Your adventures culminate in you then storming the castle and fighting Ganon.

Ganon, like most Zelda final bosses, has multiple forms. The first form you fight is a fantastic fight. It combines moves and techniques from every boss you've fought to this point and was the one time you don't fight the camera. It made the combat system shine and makes sure that you've got a good handle on it. His second form, on the other hand is disappointing. It's a big pig that can't hit you unless you literally stand there. Zelda marks spots on him to shoot, and you shoot, culminating in you flying up and killing him in slow motion. While the finisher was cinematic, it was a bit of a let down after the fantastic first phase.

Overall, BotW is a great game, with many flaws. If you have a system to play it, buy it. If you don't, wait for the Switch to get more games, the

    Good:
    -Story telling
    -Open world approach
    -Visuals
    -Survival mechanics

    Bad:
    -Framerate
    -Inventory

    Story telling:
I really enjoy the story telling in Breath of the Wild (BotW). The voice acting really fits with the feel of the game, you feel like you are being talked to with proper emotion compared to a text box with words in and an odd grunt while you try to guess if it means their angry or they are secretly a pig (its worth to note that not everything is voiceacted, there is still some text boxes). Another bonus about the story telling is that you can take it into your own hands about how quickly you want to complete the game. People are standing right there to continue the story if you wish or you could go grab a better weapon.

    Open world approach:
Within 1 hour of the game, you are able to get every ability you need for your journey. This makes you feel like you are really free within this world and you can run around all the time if you wish. I love this type of mechanic in the game, it really makes the player feel free. If I want to, I could go halfway across the world just walking along admiring the view or I could go round beating all the enemies before starting an early game quest. The reigns are to you. The only problem with this though is the lack of tutorials. At the start of the game you have to reach a cold area. I could not find any hit on how to get to that area or of any clothing that could help me get across as being too cold hurts you over time. After you beat the first area though, the rest of the world opens up to you where the game really shines.

    Visuals:
The style in the game is outstanding when you think about the limitations they had to put into the game so it could actually run on the WiiU. There are quite a lot of details on link and the enemies when they are breathing down your neck about to one shot you. The draw distance might be a bit of a problem for some people however important things are highlighted and bright in the distance. It is clear to see the next shrine or pillar is even if their a good 10-20 minutes away.

    Survival Mechanics:
There are quite a few survival mechanics which shine in breath of the wild.
Map: You are able to stamp areas of interest for you. For example a camp which is quite difficult or a place to rest for the night. I love the use of the map.
Food: Food crafting is addicting. it seems like you can mix a lot of stuff and it comes out with something interesting. Didn't get a recipe right? Dont worry, you can still use it and eat it. I love just throwing things in the pot and see what comes out of it. You can use it to enhance a foods effects as well. Stealth, speed boost, damage boost its all there and its super cool.
Clothing: Clothes have an affect on your temperature. If you are too hot or too cold you start losing health until you die. Wrap up warm when you trekking up the mountains and get you beach undies out when you are travelling under the high sun. I enjoy this mechanic as everything has a reason to it. You are forced to switch at time to time instead of sticking to the most powerful suit of Armour you can find.
Weapons: Im going to go back on myself in this paragraph. Weapons break easily, its not fun at all. You get this high attack sword but after you cleared out a camp it is shattered into pieces. Higher durability is needed because these break WAY too often. This is the biggest downside of the game for me.

    Framerate:
If you are the type of person who cannot stand frame drops, do NOT buy this video game. This games framerate is mostly soild but when things are happening it can dip. Explosions drop my play experience to 20fps. Villages as well. I do not mind this as their not as often as people are pointing them out to be although I have tried to stay away from bombs as much as I can. It does not feel good for the game and I can only hope they patch this.

    Inventory:
They tried doing a quick inventory system for your weapons, bows and arrows. It does not work. It feels really clunky especially when im in the middle of the fight. Im going through my weapons as my other one broke in under a minute, I accidentally pressed something and it threw my out the menu and got me killed. It is very minimalist. Once, I was battling a group of baddies and I pulled out a weapon, what I didnt know was that it was flammable and it caught fire. Maybe icons could be added to show if they can burn or attract lightning or have some sort of special affect so I can switch for the moment.

    Conclusion:
If you like the look of this game, get it. It is worth it. This is a very good game but it has some flaws here and there. Fans of the series will think this is Game of the Year. I wouldn't blame them

    - The way you can interact with the environment and people is a nice touch. Such as catching the grass on fire, damaging trees, people fearfully reacting to you aiming a bow at them, catching your arrow on fire when standing next to a camp fire, etc. Not very impressive in most cases as there are other games that allow the players to do so more or less but still it's nice to see the developers including the level of detail in this title.

-Weapons breaking after hitting a enemy 3-4 times gets annoying at times.

This is one of few games I would stress to avoid critic reviews.

The game in actuality is somewhere around a 7 - 9, not a perfect 10 in my opinion. In order for it to be a perfect 10, It would need a few things, including:

    - A better working framerate
    - More dungeons, harder puzzles and main story line
    - More engaging side quests
    - Way harsher difficulty curve ( Although there is the Masterquest/Hard mode coming out for expansion pass owners so this one can be exempt for about 20 bucks and some time)
    - More Items (like the runes, I felt so limited with only the bombs, Magnesis, Stasis and Cryosis.)

I understand the gripe with the music, but as a active music student at a performing arts college I felt the music was very appropriate for the setting. The ambient piano that accompanies you throughout your travels is so soothing, and the themes of the different villages are so underrated. All the music was up to zelda par for me, and I have been listening to the OST's of all the zelda games for years, so there is no bias either. I love the new approach, but I can definitely understand the concern.

The worst problem of this game is the lack of a satisfying main quest. Eight or so years for this!? Four dungeons that I completed within an hour and a final run at Hyrule castle that I also beat within an hour? Compared to ANY of the old zelda games, this is embarrassing. Even the worst received games in the series had so much more story and challenge, taking me weeks to figure out puzzles. The first entry in the game has 9 levels, so even the title with no linear story had so much more content then this one. Other Zelda games were so hard, I would quit them for months or years, only to come back and finish them when I had more patient or tried something new. I find it hard to believe that could happen to anyone in this game, and I am disappointed for that. I beat it in about two weeks, with college finals and a job outside of classes.

Compare that to Majora's Mask, Another experimental title in the series that took me about a month or two to beat. It also had only four temples and a main boss, yet it was so much harder and felt so much more satisfying when I beat the game.

And even if the reason for the lack of main story was for us to explore this "amazing open world" then I need more engaging quests. Not shrines that have me do one basic puzzle and leave. Or fetch quests where I have to bring a boy every weapon I find. Gimme some Skyrim esque quests where it has a story and could be almost considered a main quest as well. Let me join a guild or become Archmage please.

Dont get me wrong though, this game has amazing, very artistic graphics. They are not meant to be crazy high definition. Graphics have never been why we play Nintendo. The characters were quite interesting as well, although I wish I could have seen them more often. Also, Exploration is the best part of this game. The freedom of exploring the world was so entertaining.

All in all, this game is a fun start to a new era of Zelda. Lets just hope the following Zelda games will learn from it's mistakes.

Coming off the bad Skyward Sword, I was a bit skeptical about Breath of the Wild. But it has now been held up as the second coming of christ. I was going to play it anyways because I am a fan but I picked it up opening weekend.
First impressions were bad. My favorite Zelda is Windwaker because that's still the only Zelda game where Link was a recognizable human other than a hero cliche.

First impressions were bad. My favorite Zelda is Windwaker because that's still the only Zelda game where Link was a recognizable human other than a hero cliche. Breath of the Wild opens with you coming out of a sacred bath and being told that he is the ultimate hero that is destined to save the world. An overlong tutorial lasts for a whole hour and then the King of Hyrule disguised so obviously as an old man reveals himself.
Once i got past this and got to explore the world, my impression of the game got better. The world was very enjoyably open and felt epic. The world is so large(By Zelda standards) that its easy to get confused about where you are supposed to go. It took me a full day to realize that getting shrines wasn't the goal of the game. But this revelation actually made me enjoy the game more because I can explore to my hearts content.
My second to last major issue was with the Divine Beast in the Desert. It drove me to the point where I decided I wasn't going to worry about getting another Divine Beast until I got the Master Sword. I like that you have to get enough hearts to get the Master Sword and finding it was quite fun. But once I got it nothing was a real challenge because the weapon degradation system is frickin terrible.
My biggest problem though is with the story. Because it's terrible. No character has any real personality. A lot of the side characters have a single quirk that they just repeat over and over again and are generally not funny. Also the world may be gigantic but every revelation amounts to a shrine which was massively disappointing.
Overall this is still a really good Zelda installment. It isn't the masterpiece that is has been hyped up to be but it's still one of the better Zelda's in recent years.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a great game. Some may even call it the greatest Zelda game of all time or the greatest game of the year. I respect whoever may say that.

The game opens up and you are on the Great Plateau. Once you get off of the Plateau, you are free to go wherever you want. Do you want to go to Death Mountain? Sure! Do you want to go to Zora's Domain? Sure!

The game opens up and you are on the Great Plateau. Once you get off of the Plateau, you are free to go wherever you want. Do you want to go to Death Mountain? Sure! Do you want to go to Zora's Domain? Sure! Do you want to go to Hyrule Castle? You'll likely end up dead but sure! You can go literally anywhere you can see and that opens up so many opportunities to the players.

Instead of heart pieces, the game gives the player something called shrines. Shrines are like minidungeons scattered across Hyrule. Every shrine gives you a new challenge to complete. Whether it is fighting a killer robot, activating switches, or something else, it is always fun. Once you complete the shrine, you are given an item called a Spirit Orb. Gather four Spirit Orbs and you will be able to trade it into a statue of the goddess, Hylia to gain a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel. A Heart Container increases your maximum health and a Stamina Vessel increases your maximum stamina. Heart Containers can also be found once completing the four Dungeons. This system compared to the old Heart Piece system is much better, as it makes it a bigger challenge to get heart containers.

Dungeons are very different from the dungeons in the old Zelda games. One thing that is different is that you don't have to do the dungeons in any specific order or even do the dungeons at all if you want to. Another thing is the difficulty. These dungeons are much easier than typical Zelda dungeons. In fact, they barely have any enemies whatsoever apart from a few robots and floating heads. Even the bosses are much easier. Another thing that is different is the set up. You get to explore the entire dungeon as you go through it and once you get the map, you are able to change the dungeon itself at will in order to complete it. You don't make your way to the boss room, you make your way going around to terminals to unlock the boss to fight. There is also no special items or miniboss in these dungeons. I truly do like these changes better because it makes being in the dungeon seem like an exploration.

Despite the fact this might be an amazing game, the story is absolute crap. The story doesn't have the emotion and beauty as a normal Zelda game. The only emotion I felt in the story was with a character named Mipha. There are also emotional moments having to do with memories but that doesn't actually have to do with the main story. The story also gets repetitive at times when you are at the point where you have to do the four dungeons.

Hyrule may be big, but it is empty. Outside of towns and stables there isn't much to do besides complete shrines and towers over and over and over again. It gets very repetitive so I wish they gave us more to do out in the wild, like more people to run into, more towns, etc. There is nothing out there. I tend to just hang out by towns because there isn't anything to do anywhere else.

Those are the main points I wanted to explore, but here is my scores for things in a nutshell:
Graphics: 8/10 (Very fitting for the style of game)
    Story: 4/10 (Very lacking)
Voice Acting: 5/10 (Good but very unfitting for Zelda, Mipha, Rhoam, and Impa. Other characters are nice.)
Characters: 5/10 (Zelda is a near perfect character although the other character needed more. Most barely showed up to do anything throughout the entire game except help out with the dungeons.)
    Gameplay Mechanics: 10/10 (Very innovative)
Open World: 7/10 (Wonderful but very empty)
Fun: 7/10 (You will not bore easily)

    In Conclusion:
Sure! Go buy this game! It is a wonderful addition to the Zelda franchise.

The story took a serious backseat to the openworld gameplay and felt very underwhelming. I knocked it two points from a perfect score because I felt like it lacked a good story where previous entries excelled in, the items broke way too easily, and the rain halted any fun I had in exploring the world; I literally had to stop playing the game and sit inside a cave for over ten minutes each instance until the storm passed and it happened alot throughout the game. Running around the tall grass in this huge world didn't make the game lag, at least I didn't notice it. Pop in and pop out also happened but I barley payed attention and didn't ruin the experience for me. I'd say my one complaint I have with the game is a few of it's shrines. I mostly played the game with the pro controller but there were a few shrines that required motion controls to beat it. During these times I had to switch on over to the gamepad so I could beat it, then switch back to using the pro controller once more. I also wish you could manage inventory on the gamepad but sadly you cannot. But these minor complaints, plus some lagging issues, don't ruin the experience of an otherwise great game. I'd talk about the game itself, but I won't waste your time telling you things you already know. If you still don't have a Switch and are one of five people to own a Wii U, this version isn't as bad as you may think. But seriously though, get the Switch, Mario Odyssey is out and you're missing out. Expand

The game has some weaknesses though. There aren't enough dungeons and they can be a bit repetitive, also, kinda boring sometimes for the lack of change in themes, but not all of them are mandatory. At least the Wii U version has some framerate issues but rarely they make it unplayable, just be aware.

Story wise it is a bit weak but I didn't expect nothing special from a Zelda game in this regard, but it still left me wanting more, specially from the colorfull support cast of four champions. And the weapon degradation system is a bit too much of a burden, there are weapons that I love and for that reason I don't use it. The rain is another issue, sometimes is too frecuent and takes away at least 30% of Link's climbing performance wich in turn makes world traversing boring automatically.

It's my own policy to substract at least one point for aditional DLC and Microtransactions in full price games and this game has two sets of DLC that aren't big enough to justify the price bump. Also, Amiibos artificially block some content to unnecesaries pieces of plastic junk, they're not game breaking but I would love to have access to the special armor, Epona and Wolf Link with an ingame mechanic instead of an artificial vault that you can only open with spending more money.

I would love it if they had made the Wii U version a more unique experience, it doesn't take advantage of the Wii U gamepad at all and it seems that at least some of the features of the original builds of the game were stripped out in order to make the Switch version more attractive.

I love this game, battling is great and the commitment from Nintendo into releasing it even after the unfortunate missapreciation that the Wii U suffered from the market, the developers and the press is a show of respect that I wouldn't expect from many companies.

The game is a must play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Be careful not to buy into the hype on this one. While the world is mostly beautiful and the gameplay is fresh for the franchise, it's not "the best game of all time." There are plenty of games prior to BotW which deserve higher praise.

As an open world game, it falls for many of the trappings one would expect from it. The map is wrought with towers to reveal hidden areas and there are plenty of repetitive tasks to do.

The world is vibrant and full of interesting locals and NPCs to help build up a believable Hyrule. This is the games strongest aspect. Unfortunately all of the locations are the same as usual. You have the forest, desert, ocean and volcano zones. Nothing surprising there.

The combat is great, but not as great as Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, though. Every enemy encounter feels like a challenge. The game isn't well balanced, though. Some enemies in the game are too powerful. This is especially evident at the end where you get hit once by a low level enemy and lose most of your hearts. This results in you being forced to open the menu and use a healing item... every single time you are hit. Let's not mention the stupid weapon durability system.

Another annoyance is the over abundance of the SAME enemies in ALL areas of the game. Most Zelda games pride themselves on interesting enemy designs that fit to their dedicated zones. NOT in this one. From beginning to end you're fighting pig men, lizard men and robots. Even the bosses are the same creature every encounter.

The dungeons, if you want to call them dungeons, are interesting little puzzles that are executed neatly. That's all I can say about them. The lack of real dungeons is a serious omission.

The open ended nature of this game is both its greatest element and its weakest. For example, Hyrule castle is presented as an enormous challenge. To get through the gate, one must defeat an onslaught of tough enemies JUST to get a chance at fighting Ganon. There's one way around this... if you take what you learned from the game (which is to avoid difficult situations completely) then you can easily climb a pillar behind the castle and glide directly to Ganon's chamber. This mechanic is game breaking in many situations like this. Instead of forcing the player to take the plunge, it just gives you the tools to ignore it entirely for the easy way out. This is not good game design. It's intentions are to give the player freedom, but there's a TOO much freedom here.

It took me a while to get hooked to the world of Link who can easily scale mountains but struggles to sprint from shop to shop. Abilities spiced it up along with easy cooking and fun traveling methods (Those sand seals were the best). But the way horses were handled was just bizarre as you can only call your horse if it's close enough (Realistic I guess?) but you could still get the very same horse you left to 100km away if you happened to be at one of the stables (It's like 2 different people created these mechanics).

Combat felt a bit airy every now and then but with that also a way more flexible with instant weapon switching and dedicated bow button (Infinite bombs are cool too). Boss fights also felt great (Counting out 1).

Infinite bombs, unbreakable armor and teleporting to any shrine/tower aside the weapon durability system was terrible along with the lengthy ability cooldowns.

Those were all things that mattered to me. Never take in just one review and call it a buy.

PS. Curse those towers. I hope they disappear from gaming as soon as possible.

[Only spoiler-like thing here about the ending (Probably not really ruining nor spoiling anything)]
I didn't like the ending because I felt like it didn't offer any closure.

Those caveats are that the world is mostly empty, enemies are mostly identical, the shrines are high in number and visually identical, stamina and weapon durability are problematic and the towers are out of place, as is Link's tablet and it's limited functionality although offering some unique gameplay opportunities. Gone is the epic and intriguing story line from previous Zeldas, the colourful cast of characters and the sprawling and ingenious dungeons with their clever and distinctive bosses, the plethora of deep side quests, the excitement as you open a chest, as well as Link's ever-expanding armoury of tools, gadgets and items that bring with them a feeling of progression as you become more able and powerful. Breath of the Wild is a great game, but it fails to meet the standard of being a great Zelda game. The starting area offers a good hour of fun - a microcosm if you will of what the game is at large, and the extent of the gameplay, which in and of itself is serviceable - as you get to grips with the combat, crafting, climbing and varied abilities of the tablet (magnet, bomb, freeze, and stop time) after which it's probably time to put down and move on. I'd compare it to playing Resident Evil 7, then going back to play original Resident Evil. BOTW's controls aren't *that* bad, but do command a significant adjustment period as you accidentally jump into an enemy sword swing instead of dodging right/left a few times. So far, the puzzles are pretty easy. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask had far, far more challenging puzzles and those games are almost 20 years old.

Exploration is fantastic. I find myself constantly wanting to check that next hill, the next ruin, that little forest up ahead...it's addictive and enticing. This is *the* selling point of the game for me. Many times I've wanted to quit for the session only to be subliminally called to explore that next spot just up ahead.

The lack of durability of various weapons is maddening and is the worst aspect of the game. Swapping weapons every couple minutes makes combat a major annoyance. I find myself just avoiding combat if at all possible; thus, exploration becomes a bit of a walking simulator for me with minimal interaction with the game's various baddies. If you're the kind of gamer that wants to take out all the bad guys in an area (a sweeper if you will), then this game's weapons mechanics will piss you off more than once as you dutifully pick off the baddies.

If you've played Zelda games before, this one's worth a try (on a Wii U for sure; only if you want to throw away $400 on a Zelda machine for the Switch). If you haven't played Zelda before, I'd recommend waiting for a sale or an inevitable Game of the Year Edition that'll include the various DLC Nintendo will be pumping out for it. It's a good game, but there's nothing here you haven't seen done better before in other RPGs.

First there are only 4 dungeons in the game which would be fine if they were well set up. But all four of them are basicly the same thing. Walk around turn on the same 5 things in every dungeon then fight the boss. The layout of the dungeons is good for the most part but it feels lazy having the exact same goal on how to progress in every dungeon. The complete lack of mobs asides from maybe 2 small robots and eyes everywhere makes the place feel empty and removes all danger asides from the boss. The bosses are alright but are not very rememberable.

The cooking system is not very good and forces you to waste a lot of time.

Weapons breaking every 10 hits is not a good game mechanic. It does not change the way you fight most the time and if you find a weapon you like the looks of to bad.

The shrines are cool and interesting for a while. then after about 20 most of them feel repetitive and I just stopped doing them.

But besides those flaws it still a great game. You could spend lots of hours exploring to find tons of easter eggs from previous Zeldas. The about of different armors is great allowing the player their own fashion. The story if fine compared to any other Zelda game.

So overall if you just want to explore Hyrule this game could be a 10/10. But for me personally Enjoy the combat and puzzles the most the game is still good but not perfect.

As a Zelda fan, I consider Breath of the Wild a good game but it's not as perfect as most reviewers say because:

    1. Poor acting choices (Zelda)

If you decide to include a few (and just a few) voices in the game just do it right! Zelda has always been one of my favourite characters since Ocarina of Time. She was mysterious, daring and somehow cool. I'm so disappointed with her ridiculously trembling voice that no one can believe nor take seriously.

There are a few other issues with the game but Zelda's voice is something that could have been chosen right easily!

    2. Frustrating climbing

It rains a lot in Breath of the Wild and whenever it rains, you can't climb. It's that simple. I was stuck on an island with no shrines around and no way to make fire but I wanted to explore it anyway. All I could do was wait a long while until I was able to climb to keep checking the island. Another good example is when you are near the top of the mountain and then it starts raining and you fall all the way down. Lovely! To make things worse, 90% of the terrain requires climbing.

    3. Disappointing dungeons (including the mystical ones)

I firmly believe that they are the worst in the series. Mostly, they are superficial and gimmicky.

    4. Awkward inventory system

You have to eat food to restore hearts and stamina in a pause menu which feels very awkward to do while climbing and fighting. Also, all weapons break easily so you have to hold right to open the weapons menu and select another weapon in the middle of almost every single fight, which literally breaks the action.

    5. Technical issues (choppy frame rate and game freezing)

Noticeable technical issues don't make a good game bad but they are detrimental to the enjoyment of the game, period.

    6. Visuals are good and bad

Some places look quite good, like the beaches and sea, while other places look not exactly pointillist but just blurry a la Skyward Sword.

    7. Music (where?)

Seriously, where's the music? All you are going to hear most of the time is some short harmonies (no, it's not your phone's notifications) or background sounds. And why did they replace the old ranch music with the new and much worse one? Zora's music is still awesome but it's drowned in the water and can hardly be heard.

    Conclusion

I still like the game quite much regardless of its issues but after over 80 hours I can't see why it should be considered the best Zelda game ever. Reviewers will admit this eventually, once enough time has passed by. There are a few articles daring to say so already. I think some hidden Switch marketing is the reason for many websites to crown Breath of the Wild. Nevertheless, it's a good game that is so overrated.

That being said, this is far from a 10/10 and labeling it as such is just ridiculous. The game has flaws, very big flaws that to overlook and give a perfect score shows nothing more than denial and fanboy-ism. The game performs rather badly, very badly in places, that alone is enough to knock it down. The combat is clunky and not challenging, and the durability is just terrible. Having weapons made of glass is neither fun nor realistic it is just bad design. The stamina system is frustrating and not innovative at all, especially in a game of exploration the mechanic becomes extremely tiresome. Likewise did the shrines become tiresome, repetitive and all look the same. I could go on but you get the picture, the game as flaws.

People who enjoy exploration and fans of the Zelda franchise will enjoy this game, while it will be a mediocre experience for everyone else.

Expand

-Health recovery is instant and done within a menu. I think having a game about preparing food that can instantly heal you to full and more should have had realtime healing, like souls with Estus or Grass. This is just a small gripe, but I noticed it when I fell from a large height, barely alive, and I was able to heal to full before I took more damage from rolling after the fall. Just felt like it was a moment that could have been more punishing.

Honestly though, these gripes are completely trivial to the score, but I wanted to mention them. The real reason I gave a 7 instead of a 9 or a 10 was that the framerate is absolutely abysmal. I wouldn't care if it dropped during explosions, but it happens during combat and villages when the only things in the frame are npcs.
I am hoping for a patch, but looking at critics right now, no one is going to be reviewing this version. Even if they do, none are going to mention how bad the framerates are.

And they are TERRIBLE. We're talking 15fps and below at moments. I've heard that the error is caused by memory streaming rather than the GPU choking on the load which I really hope is true.

I also urge everyone else to stop giving 10s until the patch is out. We're the consumers who care enough to write a review and if all Nintendo sees is 10s (They do look at their metacritic scores closely) then they will be extremely unlikely to ever fix this.

Here are my thoughts. Alot of what the game does is very impressive, having a sprawling open world with meaningful places to explore. Voice acting is done well, and the lore of the game is much more fleshed out than any other Zelda title that comes to mind. It all sums into an enjoyable game with some obvious flaws (Framerate Drops, Variety of enemies), and several other facets that are debatable as to being good or bad. Where the game disappointed me was how far of a departure it was from the franchise classics we all know and love. It essentially has no dungeons, and although there are four divine beasts - and as i'm told a final dungeon - the divine beasts can be completed in about 5-10 mins if you know what you're doing. They comprise of a handful of puzzles, with a final boss at the end, and they all have the same aesthetic. To me, these things do not equate to an actual dungeon, but more of a patch-up job of trying to incorporate a traditional zelda feel. The second problem i have with this game - and again i will concede that this is subjective - is the lack (or subtlety) of music. It felt like such an integral part of the classic games, to have these exhilarating and emotionally charged instrumental songs that were also a gameplay mechanic in addition to setting the mood. I won't go on any further, as this game is like i said a very impressive open world game - but it could have a different coat of paint and you'd never pick it as even being inspired by Zelda. I gave it a 7 because it has nothing to offer outside of being an open-word survival game, and I've sunk 50+ hours into far too many open world games to the point where another one done exceptionally well does not hold enough salt on its own. If you're anything like me this game will make you homesick to play the series' staples. But regardless, this is not worthy of a 98 on metacritic. Expand

It's simple. This game blows your socks off for the first 10-20 hours then the issues start to show, and ultimately leave a dissatisfied feeling in your mouth. Nothing will bring back those feelings you have in the first few hours of the game, but I have to commend it for them.

The biggest issue I had with this game was difficulty curve. In short, there isn't one. The games focus on non-linearity leads to your first divine beast blowing your socks off like a Thai hooker, but everything after that becomes a rinse and repeat with a lack of increased difficulty. Yeah the game doesn't increase larger enemies in the open world, and silver enemies start to appear, but most can easily be bypassed.

Dungeons!!! WTF!!! 4 dungeons??? 4 bad dungeons!!!! oh but the 120 trials. yeah with like 5 being classable as maybe a floor of an older Zelda dungeon. maybe 30 can be considered a room from a previous Zelda dungeon, then like 20 being a single test of strength, and the rest being either terrible or just a chest and nothing else. (the chest only ones do have side quests to get into them, but that does not make them dungeons).

Great ambient music but no great pieces that stick in your mind like other titles.
Terrible difficulty management and lack of dungeons.
Rinse repeat formula for only story driven areas that fail to build your attachment to the world beyond your first area.
Graphics have an appeal to them, but they are technically bad.
    Buggy, but not too bad.
Once you complete the low hanging fruit in the game the only thing driving you to explore is the longing for exploration, However, once you unlock all the towers that wonder of exploration is gone, and things fall into near tedium.

Great game Nintendo, you pushed the bar in some areas, but also failed in others. You provided a unique and memorable experience. But the formula needs fixing for future releases. If it wasn't for the fact that This game has lit a fire under the asses of other lazy developers in terms of gameplay features then I would give it a 8. For now, its a 9.1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before you lose your minds, understand this is a good game and it's worth a purchase if you enjoy Zelda and I love Zelda, it's my favorite series.

With that said - Breath of the Wild tries very hard to be a modern open world Dark Soulsy meets Skyrim kinda game but the mechanics cause it to fall on it's face. One hit kills are a thing. Lock on isn't as easy to use as before. Weapons are as durable as icicles on a hot summer's day (unless in the enemies hands, they never break then) until you have grinded hours and can get better ones and the promise of "do anything you want, BotW says YES" comes with the fine print of "as long as you have the right gear/food/hearts/stamina/amiibos/etc". The Pay To Win amiibo aspect is also predictable but disappointing. Be warned that things like getting Epona via Amiibo comes with the fine print of "if you turn off your game or don't stable her, it never works again". Also be warned the strategy guide seems to purposely be missing things like amiibo functionality which is unforgivable and should be there to prevent things such as having to restart due to losing Epona.

So with that out of the way, let's talk about the positives. This game is beautiful. The world is beautiful. Finally being able to scale mountains is amazing and the fact that you can take your time and do numerous side quests or just explore instead of being stuck in the main story is a huge improvement. Cooking your own elixirs and food can give you a near limitless supply of health, stamina, and other items so you don't need to worry about purchasing them or having the luck to find them. There are so many great things that were added to this game that it's a shame the bad mechanics and flaws bog them down. This could have easily been a truly incredible experience, not a 10 because few games are that perfect, but at least a 9.

If you love Zelda, buy this. Don't be afraid of the Wii U version if you can't get a Switch, there isn't a huge amount of difference. If you're not into Zelda, then this is probably a skip. Other games did open world better and those will be more to your liking but if you feel little tingles of excitement every time you get a new chance to adventure with Link like me, you want this - flaws and all - just because it's Zelda.

I have super, super mixed feelings about this game. To provide some context, I have grown up playing games from Japanese RPG series, and I only play JRPG's mostly because I know I'll enjoy them, and there's too many games in the world to try with too little time, so I limit my choices to games I know I'll love - games from the Legend of Zelda series being one of them. I am also pretty flexible with the games I like, the FF series has changed their gameplay style almost every game, and besides the online games, I've played and enjoyed all of them. So, I have played a mix of open-world and linear games, and tend to prefer something in the middle.

Before I delved into BOTW, I decided to play and beat Wind Waker HD to get myself reacquainted with the Zelda series before this game, because the last time I played a Zelda game was Skyward Sword in 2011, which I loved. And I loved Wind Waker as well. I knew this game would be a bit different with an open-world concept, though I have played similar open-world ish JRPGs before, so wasn't too worried. Though, almost 20 hours put into the game, I did not feel the same level of engagement that I immediately felt with Wind Waker just a couple of weeks before, and I decided to pause playing it.

The story is not as engaging as previous titles. While the previous games pulled me in right away, I felt like I was trying to hurriedly get through the first four shrines in the beginning of the game just so I could get to what was happening. And this is the main issue I have with this game. As someone who appreciates a good story and character development in a game, the benefit of exploring a vast, virtual world in order to do so, is not appealing. I also enjoy doing side quests in JRPG's, and try to do all of them. But the side quests in here hinder me from progressing to the main story, and reap rewards that aren't very helpful. I also tend to hoard items and weapons whenever I play, and the fact that weapons and shields have to be thrown away or broken at some time, really bothers me.

I love the graphics and the character design, the world is quite beautiful. I liked how the runes are incorporated and can be used pretty flexibly (though would lead me to mostly try to use bombs to kill enemies because I didn't want a sword to break or arrows to run out -_-). The method of taming horses is cool too. For me, the fun kinda stops there though. I play games to destress from the difficulties of the world, and just kick back and play through a good story, and on the contrary this game stresses me out. @_@ A virtual world can be too vast for some people, perhaps.

I think I will try to beat this game at some point, but the excitement that I usually feel for a Legend of Zelda game isn't there. I could just be becoming a dated gamer (hopefully not, in my mid 20s here), but I miss the intricate dungeons, the different tools (hookshot, boomerang, etc), and most especially the engaging story and lovable characters. I think this game is more appealing to those who play Western RPGs more, though I hope the next title in the Zelda series tries to attempt a more universal appeal and mixes both linear and open world storytelling (maybe something like Xenoblade). If not, I think I will keep to re-playing the older games, which is fine with me, and stick with new games from JRPG series that release games that creatively build on their previous games without needed to transform it completely.

I'm glad most people are happy with this game and perhaps are even getting introduced to the Zelda series for the first time (because it's an awesome series!! Go to the LoZ concerts!!). Though for me, this is just an okay game outfitted with the Zelda name (did not mean to make that rhyme, but it came out well). There is not much really besides the names of the characters and typical Zelda items (master sword, boomerang) that make the connection with the rest of the series, and if these characteristics are swapped out, no one would know this is part of a series, and that's really disappointing to me. For now, I'll put it down and use my destressing time to play the recently new entry of another JRPG series that I am enjoying, and get back to this one later.

Overall, if you are like me and like JRPG games that put a lot of emphasis on storytelling and character development and have fun gameplay, this may not be your cup of tea. Though if you love open world games and exploring virtual areas with little direction to go through the story your own way, and don't mind doing tasks in video games w/o incentives, then you will most likely enjoy this game.

Whichever type of gamer you are, how well you enjoy a game is ultimately up to you, and don't let others push you down for what your opinion is, whether you love this or any game or don't (my wise words after reading forum discussions that are virtual war zones w/ words).

The game itself is fantastic. Still beautiful, despite low 720p resolution. The freedom of running anywhere and doing or climbing anything is pretty cool. What tanks the score for me is performance, which is quite terrible and cannot be accepted in current state (c'mon Nintendo, you can do better!). And the last, which may be my personal copy - but it's freezing my Wii U very very often.

If you like this game, I don't care, the only reason I'm writing this is for people who are looking to buy this game, not for people who've bought it and love it, ok? Now that's cleared up, what do I dislike about this game?
Well, to get started, The game has almost no interior locations. Yeah, it's got houses, Shrines, Hyrule Castle is indoors, but, think about Skyrim (A game I have played a lot of, so my opinions count here. Also, Skyrim's execution isn't perfect, either, but that doesn't mean botw couldn't do it better), in Skyrim there's a bunch of ancient tombs, full of monsters, and one time, I was wondering through an abandoned prison, where I found out how the prisinors escaped, which was how I got out myself, and there's much more interesting interiors, more Castles, taverns shops, blacksmiths, which you can use to make your own weapons, which is one of my favourite parts of that game. But enough about that, this ain't a Skyrim review, but I wanted to make my point about interior locations, and how BOTW didn't have enough.

Now for somethings I like: This game is BEAUTIFUL, one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Just the way the lovely enemy designs, the beautiful cosy-looking houses, it just looks amazing.
And the game's story is lovely. Not AMAZING, but very well done. I loved the voice acting, if a bit stale sometimes, the characters were great, all different, with their own personalities, which makes every divine beast a treat! Not because the dungeons are amazing, (But will come to that later) but because the characters are great, and I enjoyed meeting all of them. Maybe except for the Zora, but yeah, all great.

One thing I talked about was the graphics, which are good, but cause a lot of fps drops, on Wii U, which I heard they patched out, but I haven't tested that yet, so just thought I would mention that, even though I don't care about fps drops, for some people they might be a game breaker, so yeah

Also, it feels like a lot of the travel feels empty. Whenever I'm going somewhere in other open world games, what would normally take me 10 mins+ of travelling, takes me HOURS, because I'm always finding new, interesting things. Dungeons with interesting, enchanted weapons, small settlements, Dragons, (In Skyrims case) and so many other things. Like, one time I'm playing morrowind, and I see a lady by the road, who was just robbed, but fell in love with the highwayman, and you have to go find him, and tell him, and tha's just really cool. But I didn't see anything like that in Botw. I didn't get sidetracked, because yeah, Shrines are cool, but, I just talk to Beedle, get some Hearty Lizards, cook em up, and bang, +8 hearts, on top of my 10, so that keeps me ok. For instance, I beat Ganon, and at the time I had 15 hearts, but I just cooked some hearty foods, instead of waste my time with shrines, which aren't even that fun. Sorry but I just found them too easy once I put 10 hours into the game, so I saw them as a waste of time. So BOTW has a lack of things to sidetrack me, to get lost in, to spend hours doing things I didn't even plan, and that's just not good open world design to me. Sorry, but it isn't.

Also, the music is *good*, but not very memorable. I used to be able to remember a bunch of songs from other zelda games, and just other games in general. I do LIKE the music, it's just feels more made for ambience, and just not as grand as the previous games. So, yeah, that's there, and that's just more opinion based on what music you like.

I feel like the weapon system is a bit pointless, because it isn't even that hard to get good weapons, so the weapons breaking that fast, is just pontless. You could make really cool weapons last longer, so that if you find a great flameblade, it doesn't break in 20 hits, and then you could make common weapons, like Boko clubs, Soldiers Swords, and other weapons that to under a certain amount of damage break faster, because they're more common. And doing that would make the whole system better, so that you HAVE to save your good weapons for more difficult encounters. (So the whole complaint about brittle weapons would be solved this way, too)

And that's about the end, hope you found this interesting. I would continue but I've typed 4500 characters, so that's the end of this review. So......

Fun game very nice, I would go over more positives, but there isn't enough space, so, if you are thinking of getting it, and my points don't fase you, buy this now. But, if my points make sense to you, I would wait and look into it a bit more. (after all, it's like 50 pounds, so, lotsa money)

Also, I have beaten this game, I haven't put in 100's of hours, but I have played it, done 60+ shrines, and a good bit of side things. And I have but a lot of hours TES games

Breath of the Wild can’t be compared to the likes of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim because it’s not trying to be those games -- it’s a Nintendo game -- and series -- all grown up. It has a lot to offer and will keep you engaged for lengthy periods of time. If you’re playing on Switch as you absolutely should be, then you can also Zelda wherever you go. It’s arguably not the best Zelda game, but damn, it might be the most polished, and the most ambitious.

Does it have the best combat system in the world? No. Is it the best looking game out there? No. Does it have the best RPG soundtrack ever? No. Can the game make you feel like you are eight years old again? Hell yes. It certainly had that effect with me. It has been a long time since exploring, fighting, and adventuring has so consistently brought a smile to my face. Breath of the Wild is such a wonderful experience that once you play it, you will likely never look at open world games the same again.
