My expectations for Breath of the Wild were very high, as the game has received many perfect scores throughout the release period. The game does so many things right. Exploration rewards you by providing treasures or puzzles that reward you with items that further your strength as a hero. Situations that are thrown at you can be handled in a variety of ways and some of them are more creative than I would have expected. The quest system is varied and the world feels full of life and danger.

The wide array of outfits and weapons available to you throughout the game is impressive, and finding a new weapon that you love is a good feeling.. until you realize it's going to break. Early on the weapon durability system is quite frustrating. I found myself having to resort to using whatever cheap weapon my enemies dropped and saving my good weapons for a harder enemy. Some may say this is a good thing as it challenges the player to decide when to use a certain weapon. I felt, however, that this restricted the player into using weapons that were not only bad, but also not fun to wield. Picking up a club from an enemy and using that instead of the shiny sword you just found in a shrine is not a challenge but instead a mechanic that restricts you. If you choose to use your sword on enemies who are not very strong you will end up breaking that sword and being forced to pick up their less powerful weapon. If you choose to save it for a stronger foe your going to be using sticks to hit everything until you find an enemy worth using your sword on. I will admit once you get to later stages of the game and are able to take on the games' harder enemies, you will find yourself always well equipped and shouldn't have much of an issue with finding good equipment. That said I'm a firm believer that weapon durability is not a fun mechanic and hope it doesn't make a return in further installments.

As far as combat goes Breath of the Wild does a fantastic job of making every encounter fun. Whether you go straight at them in a man fight or you decide to get crafty with the environment, battling monsters in Hyrule has never been more fun. I do wish there were more kinds of monsters to face instead of just slight variations, but it's a complaint that doesn't make the game any less enjoyable. The game also allows you to hunt certain creatures to gather their meat that you can use for cooking. Cooking is a great mechanic added to the game and there is so many different recipes that you could write a recipe book. Speaking of which, I think a recipe book would have been a great addition to the game. It's not terribly difficult to remember the most common recipes you use, but having a place to view all the different meals you can make would be a nice thing to look at.

The map is chock full of things to do and places to go. Classic locations such as Kakariko Village make their return and many more new locations are there to discover. Each village or town feels full of life and has plenty to do. The various characters you come across in your journey each feel different and purposeful. The story does it's job of introducing some of these characters to you, but it doesn't flesh them out as well as I would have liked. Many of the major characters in the game are voice acted and while that is a good step forward for the series, the voice acting in Breath of the Wild is not great. Some of the lines are laughable, some of the characters don't have a voice that fits, and we never get to hear Link talk. Overall the story does it's job and is not bad, but it doesn't do much service to Ganondorf or some of the other characters I would have liked to see more of.

There's plenty more to discover in this game and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes Zelda or open world games in general. While I don't think buying a Switch exclusively for this game is worth it to the average person, the game is definitely worth picking up if you already have a Wii U or an abundance of cash. The Wii U is the system I played the game on and it looked gorgeous. The framerate struggled at certain points and in certain areas but overall it was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in a long time. Breath of the Wild deserves a nine out of ten for the fantastic way it brings the Zelda franchise forward, but I think the few issues I've listed keep it from being the perfect game I was hoping for.

I have super, super mixed feelings about this game. To provide some context, I have grown up playing games from Japanese RPG series, and I only play JRPG's mostly because I know I'll enjoy them, and there's too many games in the world to try with too little time, so I limit my choices to games I know I'll love - games from the Legend of Zelda series being one of them. I am also pretty flexible with the games I like, the FF series has changed their gameplay style almost every game, and besides the online games, I've played and enjoyed all of them. So, I have played a mix of open-world and linear games, and tend to prefer something in the middle.

Before I delved into BOTW, I decided to play and beat Wind Waker HD to get myself reacquainted with the Zelda series before this game, because the last time I played a Zelda game was Skyward Sword in 2011, which I loved. And I loved Wind Waker as well. I knew this game would be a bit different with an open-world concept, though I have played similar open-world ish JRPGs before, so wasn't too worried. Though, almost 20 hours put into the game, I did not feel the same level of engagement that I immediately felt with Wind Waker just a couple of weeks before, and I decided to pause playing it.

The story is not as engaging as previous titles. While the previous games pulled me in right away, I felt like I was trying to hurriedly get through the first four shrines in the beginning of the game just so I could get to what was happening. And this is the main issue I have with this game. As someone who appreciates a good story and character development in a game, the benefit of exploring a vast, virtual world in order to do so, is not appealing. I also enjoy doing side quests in JRPG's, and try to do all of them. But the side quests in here hinder me from progressing to the main story, and reap rewards that aren't very helpful. I also tend to hoard items and weapons whenever I play, and the fact that weapons and shields have to be thrown away or broken at some time, really bothers me.

I love the graphics and the character design, the world is quite beautiful. I liked how the runes are incorporated and can be used pretty flexibly (though would lead me to mostly try to use bombs to kill enemies because I didn't want a sword to break or arrows to run out -_-). The method of taming horses is cool too. For me, the fun kinda stops there though. I play games to destress from the difficulties of the world, and just kick back and play through a good story, and on the contrary this game stresses me out. @_@ A virtual world can be too vast for some people, perhaps.

I think I will try to beat this game at some point, but the excitement that I usually feel for a Legend of Zelda game isn't there. I could just be becoming a dated gamer (hopefully not, in my mid 20s here), but I miss the intricate dungeons, the different tools (hookshot, boomerang, etc), and most especially the engaging story and lovable characters. I think this game is more appealing to those who play Western RPGs more, though I hope the next title in the Zelda series tries to attempt a more universal appeal and mixes both linear and open world storytelling (maybe something like Xenoblade). If not, I think I will keep to re-playing the older games, which is fine with me, and stick with new games from JRPG series that release games that creatively build on their previous games without needed to transform it completely.

I'm glad most people are happy with this game and perhaps are even getting introduced to the Zelda series for the first time (because it's an awesome series!! Go to the LoZ concerts!!). Though for me, this is just an okay game outfitted with the Zelda name (did not mean to make that rhyme, but it came out well). There is not much really besides the names of the characters and typical Zelda items (master sword, boomerang) that make the connection with the rest of the series, and if these characteristics are swapped out, no one would know this is part of a series, and that's really disappointing to me. For now, I'll put it down and use my destressing time to play the recently new entry of another JRPG series that I am enjoying, and get back to this one later.

Overall, if you are like me and like JRPG games that put a lot of emphasis on storytelling and character development and have fun gameplay, this may not be your cup of tea. Though if you love open world games and exploring virtual areas with little direction to go through the story your own way, and don't mind doing tasks in video games w/o incentives, then you will most likely enjoy this game.

Whichever type of gamer you are, how well you enjoy a game is ultimately up to you, and don't let others push you down for what your opinion is, whether you love this or any game or don't (my wise words after reading forum discussions that are virtual war zones w/ words).

Best game I ever played. The graphics are not realistic but this is a very different art style and for me it is better. Sure it does not look as realistic but it looks incredibly beautiful. I need to check out more Zelda games as I have a new favorite. The open world is incredible and the music is some of the best.

Right out of the gate, Breath of the Wild wows you with its graphical fidelity and lack of knowing what the heck is going on. After some trial by fire and figuring out the basic idea of what's happened in the land of Hyrule, you get a sense of "Where do I start...?" from the world. Vast landscapes, and the ability to go literally ANYWHERE you can possibly see, are quite daunting at first. However, the thrills of adventure, discovery and the chance to test your mettle loom FAR above that overwhelming feeling of "just how big is this world?"

From combat to exploration, Breath of the Wild has given me all kinds of fuzzies. Sure, the brittle as hell weapons are a nuisance... at first. Once you figure out where to find some decent goodies, you find yourself hoarding rusty weapons to feed to Octoroks, hunting down overworld mini-bosses and making note of enemies that drop some NICE pieces of equipment (shields, weapons, bows, arrows). Thankfully, the use of a "blood moon" respawn mechanic allows you to make good use of these. Another thing that let's you keep track of them all is the "tablet map PIN" mechanic. You can put pins to depict all kinds of things on the map! I have locations of mini-bosses pinned ALL over the place! And I still have yet to unlock the whole map!

Once you've found yourself a direction to head in, some useful equipment and a general thirst for adventure, you find that hunting down the shrines (of which there are 120), finding all of the landmarks for your memories, conquering all of the dungeons and defeating all of the bosses rather attractive. Every conquest is more enjoyable than the last. Figuring out something's weakness and then exploiting it is a blast. Hell, even finding new ways to approach a situation are just as fun! There are MANY ways to play through the massive world. Stealth tactics and assassination of most enemies, melee (sword n board, 2-handed heavies, mid-ranged spears), ranged (many kinds of bows, tons of different types of arrows, magic rods), dodge-triggered counter-attacks, special weapon abilities, etc. You can tune your playstyle to the game's massive open world. Some things work better than others in certain situations, but for the most part you can play the way you want!

From wrangling horses to mountain climbing to paragliding, you have MANY options for exploration. Don't wanna do the dungeons right away? No problem! Explore the WHOLE world first! Your inner completionist is twitching? BotW has you covered! Find and snapshot EVERY single creature, weapon, item in the game to add them to your compendium for more detailed information! Don't want to lose the cool new weapon you picked up? Make note of where you found it (if it wasn't from a chest) and come back to get more when everything respawns! Found some new fashion that you REALLY want but is kind of expensive? Go farm precious gems from the big stone mini-bosses and sell em to get precious rupees! You do you, when you want!

The one thing I WILL say is that the unique weapons you get from each race can be replaced... for a rather expensive venture. I will refrain from using these weapons until I get to Hyrule Castle, so that I can use them on the way to the final boss! They have good durability and excellent attack power, but having to replace them when I'm a metric ton of hours away from the end of the game just feels silly. Them, plus the Master Sword... they only take up 5 slots total, and I currently only have 3 (MS, Zora and Goron weapons). The rest are taken up by various weapons for various situations.

One of these days I will get to finish this game, and every step Link takes will be more exciting than the last.

My hat goes off to you, Nintendo. You've outdone yourselves this time. I wish that the earlier weapons in the game weren't as fragile as crystal wine glasses, but whatever. That is my only gripe. As such, 9/10! Bravo!

This 10/10 game has a beautifully crafted world and story for you to explore with your 2 feet tied together. Weapons that shatter after a small amount of use, drowning in waist high water from lack of stamina, and a deplorable frame rate to slow the combat down makes for a frustrating experience that is neither fun nor challenging.

And this game does let you go where ever you want to go with limits like for example, you can go and fight the final boss with a stick and nothing else, you will likely die and the stick will break but you can still do it
There is also no order to the story of this game it isn't linear at all you don't even have to participate in the story of this game to win (all though I recommend participation) you can do the dungeons in any order and those who complain that this game is bad for having 4 dungeons, this is my question for you. I highly recommend this game and will give it a 10/10

The trial shrines are mostly very entertaining to solve. I'm personally rather dissatisfied with the motion control ones, though those might interest others. The single boss/ancient battle I have partaken in was very well choreographed, challenging and fun. Vah Rutah and all it entailed kept me on my toes the whole time.
The mount system is very interesting, what other game has you break in your mount? That is unless you demount a monstrous rider and steal his horse like I did.
The fact that you can do that, is amazing, and a credit to the positivity of the game, it doesn't limit you artificially, the only limit on you in this game is you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before you lose your minds, understand this is a good game and it's worth a purchase if you enjoy Zelda and I love Zelda, it's my favorite series.

With that said - Breath of the Wild tries very hard to be a modern open world Dark Soulsy meets Skyrim kinda game but the mechanics cause it to fall on it's face. One hit kills are a thing. Lock on isn't as easy to use as before. Weapons are as durable as icicles on a hot summer's day (unless in the enemies hands, they never break then) until you have grinded hours and can get better ones and the promise of "do anything you want, BotW says YES" comes with the fine print of "as long as you have the right gear/food/hearts/stamina/amiibos/etc". The Pay To Win amiibo aspect is also predictable but disappointing. Be warned that things like getting Epona via Amiibo comes with the fine print of "if you turn off your game or don't stable her, it never works again". Also be warned the strategy guide seems to purposely be missing things like amiibo functionality which is unforgivable and should be there to prevent things such as having to restart due to losing Epona.

So with that out of the way, let's talk about the positives. This game is beautiful. The world is beautiful. Finally being able to scale mountains is amazing and the fact that you can take your time and do numerous side quests or just explore instead of being stuck in the main story is a huge improvement. Cooking your own elixirs and food can give you a near limitless supply of health, stamina, and other items so you don't need to worry about purchasing them or having the luck to find them. There are so many great things that were added to this game that it's a shame the bad mechanics and flaws bog them down. This could have easily been a truly incredible experience, not a 10 because few games are that perfect, but at least a 9.

If you love Zelda, buy this. Don't be afraid of the Wii U version if you can't get a Switch, there isn't a huge amount of difference. If you're not into Zelda, then this is probably a skip. Other games did open world better and those will be more to your liking but if you feel little tingles of excitement every time you get a new chance to adventure with Link like me, you want this - flaws and all - just because it's Zelda.

First there are only 4 dungeons in the game which would be fine if they were well set up. But all four of them are basicly the same thing. Walk around turn on the same 5 things in every dungeon then fight the boss. The layout of the dungeons is good for the most part but it feels lazy having the exact same goal on how to progress in every dungeon. The complete lack of mobs asides from maybe 2 small robots and eyes everywhere makes the place feel empty and removes all danger asides from the boss. The bosses are alright but are not very rememberable.

The cooking system is not very good and forces you to waste a lot of time.

Weapons breaking every 10 hits is not a good game mechanic. It does not change the way you fight most the time and if you find a weapon you like the looks of to bad.

The shrines are cool and interesting for a while. then after about 20 most of them feel repetitive and I just stopped doing them.

But besides those flaws it still a great game. You could spend lots of hours exploring to find tons of easter eggs from previous Zeldas. The about of different armors is great allowing the player their own fashion. The story if fine compared to any other Zelda game.

So overall if you just want to explore Hyrule this game could be a 10/10. But for me personally Enjoy the combat and puzzles the most the game is still good but not perfect.

So after playing the game over the past week and finally beating it, I think I can finally give my full opinion on this game.

For starters, this game is about breaking traditional boundaries in the Zelda series and giving the player near endless amounts to explore, do, and find. It accomplishes this goal pretty darn well, besides some areas that felt somewhat empty, I found myself constantly sidetracked from an initial goal only to remember 30 minutes later that I had been collecting Rushrooms to deal for some cold hard rupees. Jokes aside, the expansive and detailed world has tons to do and many varying environments to explore, find items, and loot in.

Old school fans can feel right at home with the traditional Zelda style puzzles, hidden treasures, and despite the game only having 4 "main dungeons", the 120 shrines scattered around Hyrule for players to find and solve varying puzzles using the new Runes mechanic definitely challenged my puzzle solving capabilities on some occasions.

My few gripes about this game come from some odd gameplay choices from the developers, such as my slight problem with how fast weapons break. Despite the fact that the game throws weapons at you constantly, I personally found a few weapons I preferred and wished they could last longer on the battlefield. Another problem I had with combat was how little diversity there was in weapon attacks and animations. I felt like greatswords at least should have their own attacks instead of being lumped in a category of just "2-handed weapons" along with clubs and the like. Also I had hoped that there would be more quicktime / slo-motion attack options after a perfect dodge instead of mashing Y for a flurry strike.

In other departments there are the frame drops that many others have mentioned which I encountered fairly frequently here on my Wii U version, but this sort of thing will bother some people more than others. Also the sound design felt empty in a lot of places, with only a few faint piano notes as background music. I know the devs said they focused on this ambient sound to accentuate the environments, but I felt like it didn't fit the gameworld in some instances. (The main game theme, however, is amazing)

My other main gripe is a small lack of that heavy story-driven feel that gave life to many games in the series' history. Without getting into spoilers, I personally never felt too invested in the narrative since many of the cast of characters players will meet get lackluster screen time and development.

Overall, my smallish gripes with some gameplay and story features are easily forgiven by the sheer amount of adventure and genuine fun I had exploring Hyrule, hunting and cooking meals, solving dungeons and shrines, finding treasure, collecting strong gear, and fighting tough enemies. I would easily recommend this game to any Zelda fan new or old, hardcore or casual, as it is simply a great experience.

    My score: 8.5 (rounded up to 9) / 10

so i played that game and i must say its just awesome, I love the open world, how fresh the game feels, how sometimes you just do something trolly in a dungeon, and then you realize, you just did it with that, the moments you find a second or even third way around a puzzle, the moment you first time surf downwards in the desert.... srsly i didnt know about it until i was there, and if weso i played that game and i must say its just awesome, I love the open world, how fresh the game feels, how sometimes you just do something trolly in a dungeon, and then you realize, you just did it with that, the moments you find a second or even third way around a puzzle, the moment you first time surf downwards in the desert.... srsly i didnt know about it until i was there, and if we say this, you can do any boss or quest you wish, in the order you want, you can just do the last boss and say yeah fk the mastersword, fk the devine beasts, **** it all, i just show you ma skills baby, and spoiler, YOU CAN WIN you can actually beat the final boss fresh out the dungeon if you are a god, and do it as a mortal if you just hunt some food together, and get two or three weapons that dont break in 2 hits, i mean you literaly just need to go there and on the way you pick up one or two weapons that can be located in the wilderness, on weak mobs, or if you are lucky in a shrine on the way, you can make the game short, and end in like 2-5 hours if you want to make it fast, or play for 50+ hours and never touch the story once,
    also
it has a lot of sadness, and a lot of funny moments aswell,
link is a character that feels like he gives a **** and zelda is also very much an alive character,
the other characters have rich story behind them, and in total they are interesting,
looking at you sidon and mipha, god i they are so fking adorable,
    well what next
    the story,
the story is good, and as already said, its sad, you feel for the characters, and holy hell i felt two or three times like i could give a **** myself,... i mean you find it rly sad when you see their fate, how things turned out, i mean you basicly lost everything, and you realize how poor ass link realizes that more or less too,
you also have a great overworld, and dozents of shrines, some are even hidden behind puzzles,
like a maze, escort, golf, and so on,
sometimes you see a dungeon and think, crap,... how do i beat this now, and then after you find one solution that might not even be the intendet one, you think either, man i am awesome, OR man i am retardet,...
    overall,
    the game is just cool,
and yeah you even have mechanics from metroid now in this game, like the scanning, its now photographs, and you can read little things about the stuff you have a photo,
and in generall, the tools can be used in a schocking ammount of ways, IF you put some time into it,

i guess my review is a bit weard, but trust me,
    if you like zelda,
    or
    open world,
nintendo typ games ( yeah i think nintendo is kinda unique)
if you like a game in which the world feels interesting,

WHAT I DID NOT LOVE.... later throughout the game some frame rate drops started showing up in the game mostly while in combat (there was not many but sometimes they were very noticeable). Also I loved the big open world concept but at times i felt it was a little too "empty". There are more things i loved and did not like but i feel they are really not worth mentioning. I have a lot of Zelda paraphernalia and NO JOKE was expelled from school because of Ocarina of Time back in 1999. (If you want to know ask me) I have written short stories based on the games and done artwork on Zelda on Da. My point is that I also played and completed this Zelda BOTW with 70 shrines and a god-awful amount of Korok Seeds and got the True ending and I find this Zelda to be the most boring and NON-Zelda like game Out of the entire series for MANY reasons some of which i shall list below.

    1. Classic Link outfit is only obtainable after gathering all 120 shrines or if you have an Amibo of Link. This bothers me simply because it’s a ZELDA GAME Link by default should have the classic Zelda outfit.

    2. WAY WAY too many different nonsensical outfits that look stupid (loved the Zora outfit) and really just didn't seem like they fit into the game for me. if they had to do this they could have at least made them look like they fit in the world of Hyrule. (some of them were ok)

    3. The Shrines were a boring and uninspired way to take up time to make the game seem longer for no real reason.

    4. The Side-quests were a 80% of the time (A) boring and (B) lacking in a worthwhile reward for the time and effort it took to complete them. I found myself dreading the side-quests and them at some point just asking my buddy to do them. while i went, and did something else or took a break for fresh air.

    5. The Dungeons... THOSE ARE NOT DUNGEONS! they were just puzzles and boring ones at that! I want classic Zelda dungeons that felt creepy and challenging at times with the dark and gloomy atmosphere in some of them too.

    6. The enemies in this game are really lacking in variety. You have about 10 different kinds of mobs in this game and all they did was vary the elements they attack with. or make some living and some dead. not to mention a number of classic Zelda mobs were not even in the game!

    7. The lack of any direction to the game (granted i don’t really play too many open world games). This game could have at least given a suggestion as to who to go after first and then leave it up to us to decide what to do. But it doesn't it just says kill 4 Divine beasts and kill Ganon with no suggestion as to who might be the wiser person to go after first. I ended up doing the hardest first only to realize I needed stuff that I couldn't yet get without going to another Divine beast’s zone first. (this one could be chalked up to my skill if you want)

    8. The Bosses are all forms of Ganon! GEEZE! It felt like they didn't even try with any of the enemies in this game! Again, lots of opportunity to do something really cool here and they didn't even try to be very creative.

    9. Link does not feel like Link He may look like it but he doesn't respond like it. not really sure how to explain it. I think it’s the mechanics of the game just don’t feel like a Zelda title.

    10. I would have loved to get more Homage visually to the preceding games (besides the Temple of Time) as the game implies its coming possibly after TooT, MM, TP and WW and other titles as well. They really could have showed the water temple from TooT in sort of ruins at lake Hylia or Kakariko Village windmill despite the time from of the game they could have at least done the graveyard in Kakariko Village. There was just SO much potential with the size of the map to make it pay some tributes.

    11. It’s a huge world that is sparsely populated with anything worth seeing other then grass and although the world does look amazing it just doesn't have much in it to keep me enthralled.

    12. The soundtrack was just not very good. The only time i ever felt that Zelda Vibe and felt the presence of the music was when I was at Hyrule castle. How sadly disappointing as a part of what makes Zelda a Zelda is the Music score.

The game was a good but not great. It lacked many things that make a Zelda title special in my view. I feel like you could rename everything and take a view elements out of the game and slap another name on it and it would work just fine under a different title and that’s why it doesn't feel like a proper Zelda game for me. However for new Zelda players this game could easily be amazing to them and maybe this is just what this generation of players is looking for and I’m just a sad old timer gamer who longs for the old days of the 1990's games of yesteryear.

6/10 is my rating for Zelda Breath of the Wild

    Story 6/10
    Gameplay 7/10
    Graphics 7/10
    Audio 6/10
    Replay ability 3/10
DLC value (from what I know so far) 3/10 (who wants more shrines! though expanded story will be cool)

The world is massive, with something new to see or do around every corner. There are imaginative monsters scattered throughout the beautiful land of Hyrule, some of which require unique tactics to overcome. Occasionally, you will even run into an enemy base that you can conquer to obtain treasure. Next there are the shrines, which basically serve as miniature dungeons that you can find isolated across the map. The game smartly rewards you for discovering them, as you can then fast travel back to a previously registered shrine whenever you want to. Once you've completed the puzzle(s) a shrine has to offer, you are presented with a spirit orb that will allow you to increase your health or stamina after you have 4 of them. On top of that, the puzzles themselves were typically fun and inventive without too much unnecessary backtracking. On the other hand, the Temples/Divine Beasts of this game were usually pretty long, while still managing to retain the cleverness seen in the shrines. The one exception to this would have to be the Gerudo Temple, as it could be somewhat difficult to tell how your actions effected the Divine Beast itself. Not to mention that I encountered a few texture glitches here, causing me to fall inside a rock pillar on top of the Beast's back end. Another slightly frustrating quest in this game would have to be the Yiga Clan Hideout. While I liked the idea of having to sneakily distract the guards, I found it to be a bit more tedious than it should have been. The main thing was that you couldn't save your progress at all here, and since there were two rooms you had to go through, it got really annoying to have to traverse through the first portion again and again after getting caught. A simple solution would be to patch in an autosave feature that activates after the player gets through the first room, hopefully making this location a lot less repetitive than it is now. Still, these are just minor blemishes on a game that I have enjoyed almost every second of, and it's without a doubt worth every penny you'll end up spending on it. Expand

This sort of gaming, not based on OCD, list-checking performance goals and gambling theory, has become a relic, a blimp of what gaming was between the Arcade era and the now online era. This game reinvents gaming, by simply, being a well crafted GAME.

What makes BoTW such a GAME? It's breath of course, is considerably more than we've seen before. Not only is it a boggling game world, but the density and detail is by far and above any contemporaries. The amount of brush-stroke-to-canvas, hands-on detail found in this game rivals any triple A and any indie title to date.
From physics, to incorporating existing Zelda combat-mechanics, unto the shear scope and newtonian reactions of the animations, this game is quality. It is not just another stretched and swathed over landscape with icons, narrativeless procedural game-scripts, and little interaction, but it is exactly what we thought last gen was going to promise.

The best analogy is the wonderment we collectively felt for RDR, but even that game was shallow and thin, where Zelda is constantly surprising you with depth and consistency. For instance, I spent a considerable period trying to tame horses, when others were doing it in minutes at the stable near Hetano , I spent 7 collective hrs on a plateau above the region. I used stealth, endurance, and stamina potions and an extra bar of stamina, from horse to horse and the same horse over and over, but constantly met the fate of bucks to the ground. I came back the next day to the area, spent 10 min, and was able to tame that same very heard, some of whom looked identical to the ones the night before. Perhaps it was a glitch, or my tactics although unaltered the second time, were incorrectly applied, but the fact is, for all the tedium, I wanted those horses, and the game remembered the time and effort.

Those horses all had great stats and one of them turned out to be one of the monster horses in the game, so the work was worth the reward. What I was doing, the tedium, was rewarded with better horses and actually never felt like tedium. It wasn't reminiscent of those procedural quest in DAI. It was a fluid mechanic and I felt compelled to do it because of desire for a horse and transportation, not to fill time on my game playing schedule. That's a microcosim of what and how this game operates, and a rather poor one, because much of the game is so memorable and novel so consistently. It's hard to hark back to ex, because of how organic and fantastical the elements of the game world fluently interact.

In regards to review artist complaints, they are unfounded and should be ignored by the consumer. Sterling gave a less than precise indictment of BoTW. His review is a perfect example, like some users, that what is being critiqued isn't this game, but it is being made an example of for the industry as a whole. Due to the content of Sterling's critique, this leaning is toward a continual industry status quo.

The procedural aspects of BoTW, the food cooking, resource collection, weapon deterioration, horse catching and retrieval, stamina during climbs and swims, all are inter-dependent of the other, and work in such an organic, streamlined fashion, the action is rather all ways organic, contextual, and engrossing. Figuring out how to rpg climb up mtn ranges, with the stamina bar acting as a diminishing ticker minigame (and actual mechnics to climb), makes for some highly satisfying traversal, sky-boxes, and topographical depth to exploration. Rather than slip slides, glitches between walls, and falls, you are in control of your able-bodied vehicle, Link, and not glitching your way to exploration. As well the amount of weapons and their incorporated styles, means for action packed survival escapade, where weapons are always in supply, but availability and usefulness, all readily based on the user's skill in the heat of action.

Addressing Wiiu performance issues, the most I have seen is late pop-ins of npcs, never second long frame-rate or controller lags. The game is consistently beautiful throughout all environmental interactions and looks like the WiiU's swansong, just like it feels. In essence, scores demeaning this game based on performance are false critiques, and do not judge this game and it's ability but the anit-wiiu thesis. If these problems aren't consistent on my WiiU, then they are not consistent malfunctions in the actual software. My 60+ hours in, glitches and crashes are not apparent.

Resource collection is useful, rewarding, and easy, and the combination mechanic is entertaining and deep. The smallest mechanics, are fun, glitch free, and rewarding, but mostly they are all conducive to gaming and being in a game, even though they readily interact like fluid nature. This is a GAME, not an imitation

It's probably been over half a decade since I've felt so addicted to a game. While I would have liked more character development for the four champions, Zelda herself is more well-developed than any character in any of the previous Zelda games. Nintendo really made an amazing character with her. She's multidimensional, she has multiple character arcs, and it's all presented in such a creative way. They even give Link some character development, in a way. You would think that giving Link personality would ruin the character, since he's supposed to be the silent, "blank slate" protagonist that people project themselves onto. But once again, it's done so smartly that it does wonders for the character's likability. All-in-all, an absolutely amazing game. I look forward to seeing how Nintendo tries to top this one. Expand

I recognize its weaknesses, such as the lack of music, mediocre storytelling and voice acting, and simplistic combat (with insanely easy bosses). But none of that really bothered me because exploring is just so fun in this game.
The experience reminded me of MGSV, where I think the gameplay carries the game. In my opinion games should not be reviewed on how well rounded it is, but on how well it executes what it sets out to do.

Hyrule itself is massive, a vast open plain ready to be explored. It has to be one of the biggest areas of land in any Zelda game ever, it may even be bigger than other open world games.

That's not to say the game is perfect, it does have its flaws. In the WiiU and Switch versions, frame rate can be an issue. And so can the camera at times. And, as this game was built on the WiiU, the 2nd screen is absent on the Switch version.

If you have a WiiU, I'd get Breath of the Wild on that system. It gives the console a fond farewell, and also saves you £280. In my opinion, there is no need to get a Switch just for Zelda.

It's simple. This game blows your socks off for the first 10-20 hours then the issues start to show, and ultimately leave a dissatisfied feeling in your mouth. Nothing will bring back those feelings you have in the first few hours of the game, but I have to commend it for them.

The biggest issue I had with this game was difficulty curve. In short, there isn't one. The games focus on non-linearity leads to your first divine beast blowing your socks off like a Thai hooker, but everything after that becomes a rinse and repeat with a lack of increased difficulty. Yeah the game doesn't increase larger enemies in the open world, and silver enemies start to appear, but most can easily be bypassed.

Dungeons!!! WTF!!! 4 dungeons??? 4 bad dungeons!!!! oh but the 120 trials. yeah with like 5 being classable as maybe a floor of an older Zelda dungeon. maybe 30 can be considered a room from a previous Zelda dungeon, then like 20 being a single test of strength, and the rest being either terrible or just a chest and nothing else. (the chest only ones do have side quests to get into them, but that does not make them dungeons).

Great ambient music but no great pieces that stick in your mind like other titles.
Terrible difficulty management and lack of dungeons.
Rinse repeat formula for only story driven areas that fail to build your attachment to the world beyond your first area.
Graphics have an appeal to them, but they are technically bad.
    Buggy, but not too bad.
Once you complete the low hanging fruit in the game the only thing driving you to explore is the longing for exploration, However, once you unlock all the towers that wonder of exploration is gone, and things fall into near tedium.

Great game Nintendo, you pushed the bar in some areas, but also failed in others. You provided a unique and memorable experience. But the formula needs fixing for future releases. If it wasn't for the fact that This game has lit a fire under the asses of other lazy developers in terms of gameplay features then I would give it a 8. For now, its a 9.1.

Let me break it down for you. The story and soundtrack are good, but not amazing by any means when compared to the other parts of this game. The combat is fluid and exciting, but can get difficult at times which is truly a change for the Zelda series. Weapon degradation adds to this difficulty. It may be annoying at first, but is barely a problem later on. I can compare the combat mostly to games like The Witcher 3, but it is still in a class of it's own. The game doesn't hold your hand either, so you have to figure out the combat mechanics for yourself, which is another really nice change for the Zelda series, as for Nintendo games in general. When I started the game up, I expected a long, boring tutorial that would lessen my first impression of the game as in other game, but was very releaved that I got a Dark Souls-esque tutorial instead which is how more games should be in my opinion. Another really nice change to this game is how you can go about the game in any order you want, rather than being forced on a linear path like all the other Zelda games. With this freedom comes a large amount of exploration to be done which is completely optional, but also beneficial to you. Anyway, this is very open-ended game with advanced mechanics, and even though I didn't cover everything in this review, I still thoroughly suggest you get this game. Expand

This game is not your run-of-the-mill Zelda game, and that is really a good thing. It takes many of the conventions that started in some of the earlier games and either completely removes them or improves on them.

First and foremost, this game gives you all the tools you need throughout the game within the first hour or so. From there, it lets you go do whatever you want. Want to follow the main quest tracker? Go ahead. Want to find out what that giant flying thing is way off in the distance? Run for it! Want to try storming the final boss right off the bat? Sure, good luck! There is so much freedom in this game, and with only a small handful of exceptions, you can go anywhere right off the bat. Only once or twice have I found a challenge that required me to complete something in the main story first to unlock its secret.

As for the main story, I absolutely loved it. I want to keep this review spoiler free, so I won't go into the details of the story itself, but there were times where I started tearing up and considered making my assault on the final boss before finishing the rest of the story. I loved all the main cast of characters. They each had their own personality that made them distinct, and I even appreciated the one character that got on my nerves due to their attitude towards the events of the story and towards Link himself.

The gameplay is actually pretty unique for a Zelda game. They have improved on every aspect of combat and exploration in the series. At first, I was a little concerned that your weapons, shields, and bows all had durability, but it actually helps overall. You have to go into each fight with a strategy. You have to think about your inventory and decide whether it's worth fighting that pack of bokoblins for what could be in that chest or if you'll end up worse for wear due to the encounter. If you're skilled enough to perform some of the more advanced combat techniques (which the game will teach you if you explore enough and find the correct shrines), you can go into combat with some more confidence, as long as you know you've got weapons that will last the encounter. There's also so many small details about how Link interacts with the environment that makes everything that much more enjoyable. You have to think about what you're wearing when entering certain environments or weather conditions. Wooden items will combust in the extreme heat, and metal items will conduct electricity in thunderstorms. Enemies are also much smarter than in previous games, which in turn makes the game that much more difficult. I normally pride myself on completing Zelda games with zero deaths, especially in the titles that keep track of how many times you see the Game Over screen. In my first time through the game, which took about 30-35 hours of play over the course of the first week of release of the game, I actually lost count of how many times I died. This game is not easy, but I will argue that it is fair, and that there are no deaths that seemed to come out of nowhere. I knew that trying to climb a tower protected by super-powerful Guardians would require a good amount of skill, but I never expected to die 10 or more times trying to climb it, only to keep failing and opt to attempt it another time.

Graphically, this game is beautiful. I absolutely love the art style of the game. While the resolution of the game is only 720p at 30 FPS, I never minded that. To me, visuals should enhance and enrich the gameplay and story, and this title does that perfectly. Each of the landscapes is beautiful and fun to explore. The shrines are a very unique style that is so completely different from the rest of the world that they really stand out. The character animations are all fun and charming. It's very clear when Link is out of his element and needs to change outfits due to the climate. It's just fun to get lost in the world and see what sorts of environments or landscapes you can find.

This game does have some flaws, however. I've encountered a few places where I encountered some very bad framerate drops, especially in combat. These were very few and far-between, however, and I wouldn't put that against the final score. One other thing I saw was a couple of soft-locks when things did not load appropriately. This only happened twice to me, and one was actually quite funny, because a character did not load for a cutscene, and their dialog did not appear in turn, causing Link to stand around unable to do anything while the rest of the environment moved around him. A reset of the game put me back into a save about 30 seconds before the cutscene, and the character appeared appropriately this time.

Overall, Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games to come out in the past decade. It really brought me back to the memories I had growing up playing the original Legend of Zelda, and a return to the open format that helped inspire so many open world games we have now. This is easily a 10/10.

I don't know how this has got past the reviewers - perhaps they all played the Switch version (I don't know; I haven't played it.) Whatever the case, Nintendo need to fix this. And I'm not the only one experiencing these issues - anyone who has got in far enough to see the locations will be able to confirm what I am saying is true. A very sad missed opportunity. But after spending over 100 hours in this game so far I am loving every thing bit of it and I'm still not finished. ( I've completed the game but reloaded my save file before the final boss in order to continue playing and exploring. )

The story is now definitely one of my favourites in the long running series. The first time I stepped foot inside the ruins of Castle Town honestly made me feel nothing but sadness and each time I go back to fight against the Guardians to farm ancient gear so I can buy more ancient arrows ( they are a must! ) I still feel quite sad. This game makes you feel emotions for pixels, that is how well it's been made!

The weapon system does take some time to get to grips with. So take your time with it and your get to grips how it works in no time. The shrines offer challenges and rewards, one shrine may feature an extremely hard puzzle that makes you sit back for 10 minutes and really think of how to solve it. While others will just give you the Spirit Orb or rare item as if to say " Well done, here you go, enjoy." I've still got around 50 left to find.

Clothing system is okay, my only complaint is, there should have been a new green tunic. Don't get my wrong the Blue Champion outfit is nice and new and exciting but I don't fancy paying £20 for the TP Link amiibo to unlock the TP tunic...but I did and now I love it and it makes me even more excited to play the game.

I do wish Nintendo would starting allowing us to continue playing after defeating the final boss, again, it will restart the game which in a way ruins it for me, since it would make sense to allow us to feel like we achieved something while continuing to explore Hyrule.

BoTW sits next to OoT as perhaps two of the greatest games of all time. I can not recommend it enough.

    It's almost perfect.

    Why the 9 and not a 10?

This Zelda game doesn't get dungeons right. If this is your first Zelda game, you wouldn't notice this, and it would just be a great game! However, if this is not your first Zelda game, you'll notice that the main dungeons are all fairly short and easy. This is extremely disappointing, since Zelda games tend to resolve around a dozen or so large dungeons, with an active story. However, there are a few exceptions, and it looks like this Zelda game is one of those. Additionally, there is no special items gained in the main dungeons of this game, instead you will gain a 'power', and several magic spells (runes) replace the function of items for most of the game's puzzles. For a Zelda veteran, this made the game feel easy/less filled in, and was my only disappointment.

I still recommend this game to any fan or newcomer to the series, however. In fact, I would perhaps recommend this game especially to new comers, because it is a bit easier than most Zelda Games, while having a good story, large world, and most of the reoccurring races that appear throughout Zelda.

Lastly, a question that a lot of people are addressing/asking is: Is this game better than Ocarina of time? Well, it is definitely different, and the answer is dependent on what you liked about Ocarina of Time. Were the Dungeons and items extremely important to you, as well as the difficulty? Well, then you'd probably like this game less, but it would still be a great Zelda game for you. Did you like the large open world, freedom, and meeting the different people and races? Was Ocarina of Time exceptionally difficult for you? Then Breath of the Wild may actually be more enjoyable. Either way, Breath of the Wild is a great game.

This game is recommended for veterans of the series and newcomers especially

Before I start with my Review I just wanna say that I'd probably give this game a 9.6 maybe 9.7 and no straight 10. I've been playing it ever since it came out and it's already on my top 3 of Zelda games (and I'm not too fond of the 3D Zeldas so that's gotta mean something).

When my game arrived via mail I was skeptical. So skeptical even that a small part of me didn't wanna play the game so there is no disappointment to be had. But after watching two episodes of Mad Men I decided to finally start up the game. Even while playing at first I was skeptical. I was scared that everything you see in the first area of the game was everything the game had to offer but oh was I wrong.

The world is filled with crazy stuff. Just yesterday I decided to go to a place I've been at about a hundred times already but because I never looked into that one specific area of the place I completely missed a big (and really cool) bossfight. You just stumble upon interesting puzzles, items, shrines, challenges, side quests, etc. That way the world never feels empty. And might I just say that overworld puzzles are probably one of the best ideas this game has to offer? I am one of those girls who get bored easily by open-worlds. Most of the time they feel empty and when you wanna explore them you don't get rewarded and your motivation to explore in the first place is gone quicker than an ice cube on Death Mountain. But when in Zelda you come upon a weird rock formation, a lone pinwheel or even just a funny-looking lake you can be almost certain that something special awaits you. And because storyparts and cutscenes are way rarer than they are in Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword going around this huge world and doing stuff feels like an adventure again. No Navi or Phi holding your hand and the cutscenes that are there feel more like a treat than a chore. Because they aren't handed out to you, you have to work for them.

The Sandbox Elements of the game are really impressive. If I had to compare the Sandboxyness of Breath of the Wild I would compare it to Metal Gear Solid 3. After I got stuck in one dungeon I looked up a walkthrough (which didn't help me in the end) and there was one part that many people did in a completely different way. Because of Stasis, Magnesis, Remotecontrolled Bombs and all of the other skills and items Link gains throughout the game you can pursue most situations in thousands of different ways. The integration of a stealth system was a positive surprise for me, too. It's not on the same level a Metal Gear is but it's pretty good for an open world rpg. If you are hiding in grasses, bushes, shadows, etc. you won't be seen as easily but you also have to look out for the sounds you make. The sounds you make change with every piece of clothing and weaponry you have equipped and those sounds actually have an impact. And while it rains or it's really windy the sounds you make of course go under. I really like that whole system but it gets obsolete at some point. In the early game where Link is still weak doing stealth sometimes becomes mandatory but the more you play the easier the game gets.easier and at some point barely anyone or anything is a threat anymore. The only thing that is a threat to this game is the bad motion controls. Whenever I encounter a Shrine that uses motion controls in their puzzles I release a loud sigh and then proceed to try and beat this thing, which doesn't really use any skill but more luck that your motion controls don't suddenly stop working properly. I heard it's better on the Switch but I can't say much about it. The other "bad" thing that becomes noteable very early in the game are the games framerate issues. Apparently the performance got patched a little with the Day 0 patch but the framerate issues still exist. Normally a bad framerate is enough for me to give up a game but with a game like this you can easily overlook its flaws. There are some flaws and glitches I noticed but as said before they don't really take anything away and I doubt Nintendo will leave the game unpatched.

Let's talk about the music and the sounddesign. As I am a sounddesigner and musician myself this is one of the most important points for me. And Breath of the Wild's music and sounds haven't disappointed at all. Most of the music gives you a peaceful, lonely and melancholic vibe which is a new thing for Zelda. Its simplistic melodies played mostly by only one instrument alone underlines the feeling of the vastness of this world. It feels empty (of life not of gameplay like damn there's so much stuff to do) but not in a sad way. But there's still those songs with a classic Zelda-vibe, which are great, too! And the sounds are just perfect. I recommend playing the game with headphones because the sound environment just draws you into this world even more. It all fits each other and not one sound effect seems out of place.

All in all this game is just one single big masterpiece.

Positives: The flexibility, beauty, and game playing is fantastic., class leading. Just the whole game experience and how it has all come together is just brilliant, and most importantly fun! I find myself getting distracted a lot from my original goal, but after over 60 hours of play, I'm still enjoying it and still have plenty to do. I would say based on shrine and boss completion I'm about half way through the game, and I'm still discovering new things.

Negatives: Some have complained about frame rate issues, I've only run into a slow down moment once in the 60 hours of play, and they has included some pretty intense gameplay or graphically demanding areas. So, seems fine to me? That is more or less my only complaint. The only other minor niggle is that sometimes it can take a bit of time going through the inventory and dropping weapons you don't want to pick up a better one, some sort of hot swap mechanism built into a patch would be great.

This game is recommended for veterans of the series and newcomers especially.

I got the game on the Switch and my brother played it on the Wii U. They look and play very identical. Though I prefer the gamepad to the joy con controller. The game is phenomenal. There is literally so much to do and we're barely finding time to do the main quest. And the Koroks are so cute!

One of the few games that lived up to the hype. We waited years and Nintendo truly delivered. I've become so engrossed in the game and have spent the last few hours shield boarding. Runs fine on my Wii U but does suffer drops. But nothing too serieous.

To start of, I would like to clarify my score as somewhere between a 9.4 and a 9.7, depending on what the soundtrack of the game is currently playing. Yep, that's pretty much the reason I didn't give it a perfect 10; the soundtrack is so subtle on the Wii U, it may as well not exist (it just feels louder on Switch). Yep, that's pretty much the reason I didn't give it a perfect 10; the soundtrack is so subtle on the Wii U, it may as well not exist (it just feels louder on Switch). But let's move away from comparisons; and with that, I mostly mean "FPS" whining. You will not find that here. I bought a Wii U because I like games as a form of entertainment, not a replacement of reality; I am not looking to escape reality in amazing 60fps-4K glory. So let's move on. (and if that's not a good reason for you, I respect your need to escape... this game is not for you)

This is by far the best game on the Wii U, and wonderful "swan song" to the console. The farewell to the console reminds me of Twilight Princess on the GameCube. After Wind Waker initially disappointed some hardcore Ocarina of Time-Majora's Mask fans, Twilight Princess redeemed the light that was WW with a lot of darkness. So where does Breath of the Wild (BotW) fit between two remakes and a spin-off (Hyrule Warriors)? Perfectly after Skyward Sword.

So then, my impressions after more than 10 hours playing, which isn't a lot for this game (think Skyrim playtimes and you'll get it):

Soundtrack: Sweet. Tender. Subtle. For the first time, a Zelda game places its focus on environment before music, and though, for a music lover like me, it was sad.. this is actually quite in tune with games like Witcher 3 (from which it takes a few elements). Do not expect to be awed by the soundtrack unless you play with headphones.

Story: This game is FREEer than Skyrim, and so is the story. Yes, you read that right. The open world model for this game is a combination of Skyrim and Witcher 3. Your heart containers, your equipment, your stamina, and your.... food dishes?....... are what keep you from going wherever you may please. You may want to go up to that really high peak because, heck, "throat of the world, baby!" but that's not going to happen with that thin shirt and pants, and that pot-lid-for-a-shield and rusted blade... and the baked apple you stole from that old guy. Sure... you can sneak, but when night time comes, good luck with the 172HP goblins and your little twig that does 1 damage. As with all Zelda games, there are too many sidequests to count. Oh wait... that's not what Zelda is known for. Well, looks like now, it will be. Say goodbye to a series where the only sidequests were grabbing bugs or taking frogs that could spoil to a witch living behind a village.

Controls and AI: This can be challenging with so much going on. Thankfully, some of the cool mechanics, like stopping in midair to shoot an arrow (as seen in first preview trailer of game) and being able to fast travel at any time (ANY TIME... hear that Bethesda???) help tremendously in the fight against the darkness. I place AI in the same category because this is something not often talked about. The AI in this game is one of the most advanced I've ever seen in any open-world RPG or Adventure game. A huge part of whether you make it out alive in an encounter or not, will be based on how well you know your controls and your on-hand-equipment/abilities. That being said, at no time do the controls feel difficult/unmanageable, or like a failed experiment and excuse for selling new peripherals (looking at you Skyward Sword, with your bs MotionPlus).

Longevity.... I'm pretty sure people who put value to what they spend money on, will be spending the rest of the year - until Christmas - switching between BotW and Horizon ZD (if they own a PS4). This game has so much going on, you begin to stop wondering how far you've gotten... and well, it doesn't tell you.

Tips and Advice: If you do not own a Switch (or won't own one for a while) and DO own a Wii U, Purchase this game. This game, along with a handful of others, is the reason you bought a Wii U to begin with, and sighed twice for those HD remakes...

If you own the game and have just started or not gone too far, do your best to NEVER look online for walkthrough help. This game deserves it, and you will enjoy it more. When you use walkthroughs in free-roam games, you are virtually placing your game "on rails." So what's the point?

Last thoughts: This game is clearly a rebirth to the series, as many other franchises have been "rebirthing" (Tomb Raider, God of War, etc). Consider this game as a brand new experience, and you will love it. Look for the past in it, and you may be disappointed. It's really a matter of one simple choice: to allow yourself to be surprised by something that turned out different than you, and the rumor mill, expected.

Namely, that this game is incredibly underwhelming, in pretty much every way imaginable. Combat is uninspired, the crafting mechanics feel tacked on, the AI is easily exploited especially when objects are in the way, and the story is.... well... laughably bad. The game features repetitive puzzles and embarrassing use of reskinned enemies. The framerate issues and objects in the distance popping in and out is horrible to experience. This game is simply not worth your time in any sense of the word. It is, in essence, an Assassin's Creed type game. It is promoting itself on this promise of delivering a game with a really cool idea, but the reality of the experience is more than simply lackluster. It is downright pathetic..

You will find that the horses limited motion and the inability to call them from long distances makes it more of a novelty than for practical use. It would have also been nice if Link could actually dive under water. But being able to climb most anything in the game and paraglide off of stuff is a great feeling that should be in more games of this type. I had to cut off a point for the WiiU’s technical problems with the game. First, Almost every time you are in a town you will experience slowdown - it is not bad but is notable. What is the most frustrating is the lack of options for the WiiU controller like in previous Zelda games on the system. It is frustrating to see you ask to put a name in for your horse but can’t use the huge tablet to write it with. Why cant I manage my items from the controller? Why is there no world map on the controller? Why can’t I write down food recipes that I make? The only thing you can do is play the game from the controller like a glorified Gameboy. I also wish there was more variation within what you do in the world. There are many different regions to explore, but you tend to do the same tasks in all of them. Find the large tower to expose the region on the map, look for shines, take out some bandit camps, rinse and repeat. It is all very fun but when you step back you do notice a lack of depth in variation. There are 100 shrines with puzzles and each are quite different and rewarding to solve. However, there is so little in the way of tutorials or guides in the game you will inevitably have go online to learn game mechanics to solves some puzzles. A small school or dojo for you to learn advance mechanics in the game would have been invaluable. Rather than dungeons, they have you solve larger puzzles with a boss at the end. Honestly, this felt weak and there should have been more difference between the shines and the dungeon replacements. However, all the complaints I have listed are pretty small. I do think they add up and take away from the experience a bit, but it is not much. I am not going to call this game perfect like most other reviewers as there are many places they can improve, but what is there is great. If you own a WiiU and enjoy Zleda and/or open-world games, do yourself a favor and pick this up, it really is a fun despite its few flaws and shortcomings. Expand

I've died so many times in so many different ways and each time it was cool.

I would think that running through a big open field would be boring but they make sure that, even hidden in the grass, there are all sorts of useful things or I never noticed that pinwheel on that stump there. What is that? What does it do? I'll put a star by it and come back later. How do i get up there? I never tried climbing to the top of that before and, sure enough, there's a 10 things i discover on the climb and something at the top!

If you don't discover something hidden, or a puzzle, or treasure at an unexplored area then you will discover 10 on the way there.

What do these do? This looks interesting. Next thing you know it's coming to life and trying to kill you! RUN!

Some framerate issues, repeated unskippable cutscenes, overactive weapon degradation, and extremely segmented puzzle elements are the biggest marring points on what is otherwise probably my favourite Zelda game to date. The worst thing that can probably be said about it is that it "isn't Zelda"; which isn't completely inaccurate in terms of the structure and progression of the game. Conventional dungeons have been replaced with a series of 120 shrines, best described as puzzle rooms, which are how you upgrade your health and stamina now. Other than that, the world is yours to explore and discover at your leisure, including running dick-first into the endgame at any point that you might feel particularly masochistic. Some people evidently are not a fan of this, but personally I think it is a LONG overdue revitalization of the series, and overall a flawed masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is great. THE Best Zelda game-play and mechanic wise.

    BUT...

I don't understand how everybody gives this game a 10 right of the bat when the STORY is a series of flashback, a non existent/present villain and gives you no sense of urgency to save Zelda. ( I understand that the open world and liberty to complete this game in any order you want makes it difficult story wise )

I recommend this game to anyone, even non-Zelda fans cause this one changes almost every aspects of what I've grown to know as a Zelda fan. It even made me think of Dark souls a bit in a sense that the environment can be your friend and your enemy,

With this said, I'm a bit disappointed because I was actually hoping for a lot of dungeons (No, I don't think Shrines count haha), and a bit more Zelda Lore ( Triforce, goddesses, a more human-like omnipotent Ganon )

Still, a great game and THE Best WiiU game available ( Come on, the Switch is not a great deal ATM. )

Here are my thoughts. Alot of what the game does is very impressive, having a sprawling open world with meaningful places to explore. Voice acting is done well, and the lore of the game is much more fleshed out than any other Zelda title that comes to mind. It all sums into an enjoyable game with some obvious flaws (Framerate Drops, Variety of enemies), and several other facets that are debatable as to being good or bad. Where the game disappointed me was how far of a departure it was from the franchise classics we all know and love. It essentially has no dungeons, and although there are four divine beasts - and as i'm told a final dungeon - the divine beasts can be completed in about 5-10 mins if you know what you're doing. They comprise of a handful of puzzles, with a final boss at the end, and they all have the same aesthetic. To me, these things do not equate to an actual dungeon, but more of a patch-up job of trying to incorporate a traditional zelda feel. The second problem i have with this game - and again i will concede that this is subjective - is the lack (or subtlety) of music. It felt like such an integral part of the classic games, to have these exhilarating and emotionally charged instrumental songs that were also a gameplay mechanic in addition to setting the mood. I won't go on any further, as this game is like i said a very impressive open world game - but it could have a different coat of paint and you'd never pick it as even being inspired by Zelda. I gave it a 7 because it has nothing to offer outside of being an open-word survival game, and I've sunk 50+ hours into far too many open world games to the point where another one done exceptionally well does not hold enough salt on its own. If you're anything like me this game will make you homesick to play the series' staples. But regardless, this is not worthy of a 98 on metacritic. Expand

Other than I am enjoying this game immensely. Put about 15 hours in so far and have only unlocked 2 locations on the map. Expand

I LOVED IT. Anyone with a negative review has a **** life. I'm convinced of it. they're like that person you see cutting people off in traffic or yelling at waiters. Just a person having a **** day or a **** life cause they realized life is meaningless initially and they haven't given their life meaning yet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a fantastic and fun game. I got it for the Wii-U because I have the Wolf-Link Amiibo, and absolutely love being able to summon him in as an in game companion. Plus, I don't have the money for a Switch right now anyways. Continuing...

Overall, this game is really great. Don't listen to those idiots trying to "bring score balance to an unfairly popular game" by giving it negatives. Seriously, if you do this just to "fight the power" or whatever your real reason is, maybe it is time to grow up.

LoZ: Breath of the Wild offers challenging combat, and brings a new meaning to exploration with the ability to climb and glide as you please. This is limited, however, by your stamina so it isn't easy to abuse. If you are clever and plan a climb right, you can reach almost any point visible in the game, high or low or in between. This is perhaps one of my favorite things about the game, and makes exploring feel almost irresistible. You see a far off location you want to reach, and you find yourself looking for the best way to traverse the terrain to reach it. Seriously fun if you enjoy exploring.

Combat is a challenge, it is shaken up by the fact that weapons now have a certain use limit before breaking. This means you can carry multiple weapons of each type, multiple shields, all varying in stats and move sets and usage. Enemies drop their weapons, so you can always keep your inventory full so you don't find yourself in a fight without a weapon (unless you neglect to maintain your inventory.) Larger and more powerful enemies can pose a serious risk, making you have to learn and adapt to their fighting style to succeed and survive.

You can forage and hunt for food and useful elixir making items, and then fry them up in different combinations to achieve different results and abilities. This is a particularly fun and easy system, which is important to learn to do the farther you go in game.

The only complaint I have, in all honesty, is the lack of direction. When you are released from the intro phase into the "Save the Four" quest, you are given the four locations of each race. This in and of itself is not the issue, the issue is there is no flow of difficulty. You can go anywhere at that point, the farthest reaches from where you are if you choose. And you WILL run into extremely strong enemies who glance at you and wreck you, because you have wandered into an area designed for a more advanced and well equipped hero. This is annoying at first, until you learn to scout out the enemies first.

On that note, Breath of the Wild also introduces a simplistic stealth capability with which you can actually assassinate enemies. This is a nice mechanic to have when exploring the aforementioned high level areas, making survivability much higher.

If you have ever enjoyed any Legend of Zelda game before, any open world exploration game, or pretty much any of the large world games release in the past 20 years, look into Breath of the Wild. I promise you won't be disappointed. This game is well worth the $60 dollar price tag, perhaps twice that. You won't regret it.

Breathtaking. Wonderful. It's like Witcher 3 BUT you can play it with your kid.
Can't understand the conformism and clinging to some abstract ideal expressed by most of the downvoters.
I love the whole franchise. Played five or six of them, some finished, some will be some day.
But this does some much right that it seems to me one of the best games I ever played.

Breath of the Wild may be the best game I have ever played. I usually hate it when people give a game a 10/10, because that implies that the game is perfect, but after putting over 40 hours into this game even though I have only owned it for 4 days, I can comfortably say this game has almost everything right.

I was very disappointed after playing Skyward Sword (the last 3d Zelda game released) which threw away almost every thing I loved about the series and was afraid that this game would fail my expectations. I could not have been anymore wrong.

The only bad thing I can think of is that the game sometimes the game has frame rate issues which is more of a problem with the hard ware rather than the game itself, but if you can look past them you'll be in for an experience that you will never forget nor ever have again

Breath of the Wild quickly became the best game I have ever played. A title that used to belong to Metal Gear Solid 5. A game that I thought could never be topped

If you are curious as to why the rating is low on Meta critic, it is because many people believe that Nintendo are paying for good reviews and haven't actually played the game themselves. If you are still unsure I recommend you look at some let's plays and reviews on YouTube, but remember this is a game best experienced blind

While not perfect this game is excellent. The open world setting fits very well with the feel of Zelda and I quickly found myself lost in a fantasy world hunting down shrines and towers. The world is densely populated and there never feels like huge expanses of nothing. Somehow the world feels alive and everywhere you go there are glowing towers or glowing shrines to find and explore. IWhile not perfect this game is excellent. The world is densely populated and there never feels like huge expanses of nothing. Somehow the world feels alive and everywhere you go there are glowing towers or glowing shrines to find and explore. I always feel like I have a clear goal and even choice between multiple different goals. The combat mechanics are polished and it feels good to get a perfect parry or dodge then strike your enemies with a flurry of attacks.
I don't like the durability on your weapons though and after killing a few enemies even the good weapons break which is frustrating. In one part I got what is basically a lightsaber and it lasted me only a single fight which didn't feel cool. I started using the garbage clubs the basic mooks drop so that I could save my good weapons for later and I think that's poor game design to force me to use garbage to fight instead of my awesome silver greatsword or lightsaber.
I also dislike the fact that you get a special magic tablet thing right at the start but the Wii U gamepad does nothing. I know that the Wii U was a failure but it seems pretty ridicolous that a major story item would fit perfectly with the gamepad and they passed up such a great opportunity. At the very least they could have made it a map. This was the last big release for the Wii U and they didn't bother even trying to make use of the gamepad that made it unique. It is a missed opportunity they won't get again for any major releases.
Aside from these criticisms the game is very well polished and is enjoyable to play. It is an excellent Zelda game and deserve the high praise it is receiving. I am impressed that the transition to open world was handled so well and it is not only one of the best Zelda games I've played but one of the best open world games. What I enjoy in open world games is having cool little things to do in between the big story things. When I set out in breath of the wild it is an adventure getting from point A to point B and there is so much in the world to distract me that hours flew by and I was left wanting more.
I give this game a 9/10 because the combat, open world, and most of the gameplay are spot on and make for an exceptionally well polished experience. However it is far from a perfect game and I am dissapointed that their Wii U release didn't make full use of the gamepad and the weapon durablity system is anti fun.

This game is pure magic. Nintendo takes on the open world genre with skillful perfection. The way the game unfolds feels so rewarding and natural. The quest log is easy to use and does its job of tracking all open and completed quests well, it's UI is awesome, but I'll get to that. The map system is outstanding! With tons of fast travel points and a way point/stamp system that makes keeping track of all the big and little points of interest easy and very painless. And beyond that the way the game guides you to objectives makes me feel like I'm truly interacting with an alive story. Come to the crest of a hill and you'll spot shrines or smoke from a nearby camp. Tall towers not only fill out your map but give you a vantage point to spot most of the major objectives in the area. It all feels very slick.

The game play is outstanding. BOTW takes ques from the last two installments combat and polishes it. One of my few small issues is that I wish the shrine that trains you on the basics of fighting was a bit easier to find, maybe it could have been one of the four starter shines even. I found it almost right away and my wife did not until much later. This did lead to a huge change in how we each are playing the game, so that is pretty cool. I have taken a very stealthy mode of play, sneaking into camps and pulling off one hit kills and using remote bombs as distractions. When I do fight head on I'm jumping and dodging hits to get flurry rushes. My wife seems to enjoy using a long spears and running in like a viking, overpowering her enemies with powerful charged hits. Both work equally well.

Equipment brakes, a lot. This seems like it would be a pain however I felt after just a few hours I was picking up more then enough and keeping a keen eye out for hidden chests I always have a nice stock of heavy hitting weapons. That said buy bag space, mostly weapon space. I won't spell it out here but look it up, find the Korok. You just won't run out of bows and shields, hardly ever, so that's not near as important to upgrade.

Get use to cooking. Luckily it's pretty fun to experiment with different ingredients to find the ones that really work for you. This is the only way to regain health and status boosts. The learning curve is a little steep, I found myself unclear as why one recipe would yield a steak that would fill my life and add a defense boost then something almost totally the same would only fill my health. A little trial and error. The little song it plays when you cook it very charming.

The visuals are fantastic. A nice maturing of the Wind Waker style. Very smart of Nintendo to revisit the cell shaded look, insuring this classic will stand up for years and years. I'm sure we will see a remaster in about 10 years. The UI is awesome! I know gushing over the HUD and menus must seem odd but they are so clean, so well designed that I had to single them out.

Technical issues are almost nonexistent. I have suffered almost no slow down. Very minimal pop in. Glitchiness is very rare. I can only think of one time where a goat just disappeared in front of me and another where some weapons that dropped disappeared before I could pick them up.

I have spent dozen or more hours already and watched my wife play about as much with no end in site. I hope the rest of the industry is taking note. This is how you do open world games. This is how you let a narrative unfold in a natural way that rewards and encourages players to be curious and experiment. BOTW is not only the high point for Zelda but is a high point for modern gaming.

There is no hand holding and you get to explore everything in this rich world. Every corner hides a chest, a boss, a puzzle, a cool weapon, an environment you have to learn to deal with. There's plenty of surprising things along the way: taming horses, getting to know the characters, buying a house, riding a bear, getting new powers, finding new ways to take down ennemies, new ways to travel by land, air and water. The game is just filled with cool stuff to do and you never feel in an empty repetitive open world. It's very entertaining for hours and hours, there's always something new and fun to do. The cooking only is something you'll enjoy experimenting with a lot.
I'm disappointed by the performance, resolution and aliasing though and I'll admit that it takes a bit from the immersion and overall enjoyment.

I'm not going to go too much into detail, because I still highly recommend this game. It's a great remaster of the Zelda franchise, and it brings back many memories from the other classic Zelda games.

The world of BotW is massive and beautiful. At first, I was worried that the open-world aspect of the game would make it feel empty, but instead I found that it is jam packed with detail. Everywhere you look there are small details, unique npcs, side-quests and interesting secrets to find.

Graphically, the game matches its amazing world design. BotW is the culmination of 30+ years of game design and it really shows. Every area of the world is unique and the incredible use of graphics technology turns everything you look into an amazing view. LOD pop-in isn't very noticeable, and the way grass is rendered and moves when you run through it is great. Unfortunately, all of this taxes the Wii U, and the console frequently throttles down to 20fps in certain areas. I'm looking forward to playing this game 10 years down the road, when Nintendo remasters it on a 4k console.

The largest failure was the disappearance of traditional dungeons in BotW. The Divine Beasts aren't enough of a challenge and aren't long enough, to be considered 'dungeons'. At least, not in the classical Zelda definition of a dungeon. In every Zelda game, you could always count on delving into amazingly detailed and designed dungeons, with interesting and challenging puzzles and bosses. BotW fails miserably here. The development time that could have gone into making epic dungeons was spent on small single-puzzle 'Shrines' that pose almost no challenge. I hope that the future DLC will be focused on bringing back epic dungeons, because without them this game only feels like half a Zelda game.

Overall, I love this game, but I wish Nintendo would have slowed down, and taken a little more time to develop it. I also wish they had hardware powerful enough to run this game at 1080p. I'm looking forward to the DLC, and I hope that patches can fix the fps drop issues.

Breath of the Wild can’t be compared to the likes of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim because it’s not trying to be those games -- it’s a Nintendo game -- and series -- all grown up. It has a lot to offer and will keep you engaged for lengthy periods of time. If you’re playing on Switch as you absolutely should be, then you can also Zelda wherever you go. It’s arguably not the best Zelda game, but damn, it might be the most polished, and the most ambitious.

Does it have the best combat system in the world? No. Is it the best looking game out there? No. Does it have the best RPG soundtrack ever? No. Can the game make you feel like you are eight years old again? Hell yes. It certainly had that effect with me. It has been a long time since exploring, fighting, and adventuring has so consistently brought a smile to my face. Breath of the Wild is such a wonderful experience that once you play it, you will likely never look at open world games the same again.
