A masterpiece without equal. This is for me without doubt the best Zelda game and the best game of all time. The vast open world feels so alive and real and it's just incredible to explore Hyrule. Nintendo made almost everything right with this one. It's as near to perfect as it gets. Must play but a bit better on the Switch.

Even though I suggest getting this game on the Nintendo switch, it is also good on the Wii u.

This game is amazing and has also most infinite replay ability. This game is really fun and is one of the best games on both the wii u and the Nintendo switch.

Breath of the Wild has a beautiful and enthralling art style, engaging gameplay, and the most gripping open world I think any game has featured in a long time. Additionally, it is the most mechanically stable open-world game I have ever played. Between the tolerable load times, lack of noteworthy performance issues and the absence of other glitches typical of Bethesda's flagship titles, this game is an absolute masterpiece that lives up to the hype that surrounded it leading up to its release.

The only negative I can speak to regarding Breath of the Wild is what I saw as a lack of replayability. After clearing all the shrines and completing the DLC, I had almost no desire to return to this version of Hyrule. However, I have almost no doubt that the first time you play through Breath of the Wild, you will enjoy yourself no matter what other games you like. This is easily one of the greatest Zelda games of all time, and I would not shy away from calling it one of the greatest open-world games of all time.

It's probably best Zelda I've played (and I've played almost all of them) but a few things keep it from the ridiculously high scores that the love sick reviewers have given it.
    1) Basic melee combat. Sure you can do some interesting things if you go out of your way but the central melee combat is plain and rather boring.

After a while you realize that there is just no point in attacking most enemies because all you do is wear down and break weapons and in return you might get some random worse weapon. With such a big world at least the settlements should be fun right? No. They have minimal NPC and side quest and you form no attachment to them. Compared to previous games - Skyward Sword and Wind Waker , Breath of the wild seems devoid of life.

I've bought the game full price and never finished it. I've played some bad games with good story but here the story is so non-existent that I have no desire to see to its conclusion.

It seems that after development hell the game was still rushed to playable state. It is ok, bo certainly not game of the year. I look at the scores and ponder how so many people can so in love with it. It all feels like a chore, a menial job. Perhaps it is a way to escape stress like soap operas or smoking.

Rarely do modern video-games provide such non-patronizing and truly open gaming experience as the Breath Of The Wild. Seldom these days do games truly focus and run on nothing more than the players' own curiosity; their desire to explore the world and have a wild adventure.
    ――
Big words, huh? Well, I don't talk big without a good reason.
Having watched numerous, once quintessential series decline in the past decade or two, Legend Of Zelda included, I can't say I was exactly ecstatic when I first saw how this latest installment would play in practice. Too often nowadays can an experienced veteran gamer make some pretty accurate and safe predictions out of given pre-release information or the first few minutes into the game, simply because how often modern titles tend to play it "safe" by rehashing the popular designs. In BotW's case, the term "Ubisoft open-world game", down to the climbable towers and all, was the common slur people hastily used to describe the newcomer title... and at first I thought they were right.
    ――
"WRONG!", yelled Lex Luthor. At mere hour or two into the game, I started to realize my mistake. At most, this is a wolf in a sheep's clothing. Something that merely LOOKS familiar and same-y on the surface. The freedom to truly explore ANY nook and corner, scale any wall you come across, all while having to come up with solutions for how to deal with the numerous deadly hazards of this new version of the Hyrule... this is what "engaging" truly means!
Then, a couple hours later, I came to realize that the first few hours were nothing more than an elaborate "tutorial". That beyond this already reasonably sized piece of the world map lied an even larger world. One with MORE dangers, more wonders and more exciting fun to be found.
    ――
I cannot think too many other (mainstream / AAA) games, at least from the past several years, that would strip away all artificial obstacles and walls the same way as BotW. Literally nothing else than your own lack of skill (or sufficient gear) can stop you from waltzing straight from the starting area, to the very final boss, and maybe even defeat it. At no point will the game try to stop you from exploring deadly and exotic areas, for dozens of hours, before tackling some story -missions. And very rarely is the answer to your own "I wonder if this silly plan could work?" a big fat "No!".
There's simply a ton of things to do in the BotW's ruined Hyrule, and more elaborate, simulated "systems" that not only keep the world feel "living", but that can also be exploited in numerous, even some hilarious ways.
    ――
I can totally see Breath Of The Wild being a divisive game.
However, one thing is for sure: no two playthroughs will ever play the same!
Even after hundreds of hours, I am still learning something brand new of the game, and it seems like I too keep surprising some old vets with my tales of some tricks and experiences of my own.
    ――
For 20+ years, I was certain that nothing could come close to the magnificence of the Ocarina Of Time and the Majora's Mask. Now, however, I am pleased to admit that I was wrong. Breath Of The Wild finishes this tri-force of greatest games in the history of the industry.
    ――
    Hyperbole much? On the contrary!
THIS is a game that needs not only be played by everyone, but also TAUGHT in schools.
This is a video-game, all about what makes video-games so good in the first place: the gameplay.
When just moving in the game feels good, you are on the right track.
Add an absolutely gorgeous audio-design and pretty impressive visuals on top, and you got what people call a "masterpiece".

it can easily be proven to be a perfectly mediocre game from a factual standpoint as video games have easily identifiable characteristics that can be objectively critiqued

for example: “fun” is completely subjective (lol, some review sites actually think thats the most important)

The bad: it took 6 years to leave, just waiting for the launch of Nintendo Switch. There are no temples. There are no cities. Few NPC to interact. It takes a long time to boot. The open world looks empty (on certain occasions). The story is silly. The hero mode came in a DLC. There is no variety of enemies. There is no variety of bosses, always facing the shadow of Ganon and the Guardians. The graphics are very bad on Wii U, not seen even remotely close to how it was presented or as seen in trailers.

Lo Meh: that of looking for seeds on the map to receive an item troll breaks your morale. The hyper-sexual Princess Zelda. The last major release of the Nintendo Wii U. Nintendo is not sorry for letting the Wii U die without taking out games all delaying them to take them out with its new console the Nintendo Switch

Those caveats are that the world is mostly empty, enemies are mostly identical, the shrines are high in number and visually identical, stamina and weapon durability are problematic and the towers are out of place, as is Link's tablet and it's limited functionality although offering some unique gameplay opportunities. Gone is the epic and intriguing story line from previous Zeldas, the colourful cast of characters and the sprawling and ingenious dungeons with their clever and distinctive bosses, the plethora of deep side quests, the excitement as you open a chest, as well as Link's ever-expanding armoury of tools, gadgets and items that bring with them a feeling of progression as you become more able and powerful. Breath of the Wild is a great game, but it fails to meet the standard of being a great Zelda game. The starting area offers a good hour of fun - a microcosm if you will of what the game is at large, and the extent of the gameplay, which in and of itself is serviceable - as you get to grips with the combat, crafting, climbing and varied abilities of the tablet (magnet, bomb, freeze, and stop time) after which it's probably time to put down and move on. The game has some weaknesses though. There aren't enough dungeons and they can be a bit repetitive, also, kinda boring sometimes for the lack of change in themes, but not all of them are mandatory. At least the Wii U version has some framerate issues but rarely they make it unplayable, just be aware.

Story wise it is a bit weak but I didn't expect nothing special from a Zelda game in this regard, but it still left me wanting more, specially from the colorfull support cast of four champions. And the weapon degradation system is a bit too much of a burden, there are weapons that I love and for that reason I don't use it. The rain is another issue, sometimes is too frecuent and takes away at least 30% of Link's climbing performance wich in turn makes world traversing boring automatically.

It's my own policy to substract at least one point for aditional DLC and Microtransactions in full price games and this game has two sets of DLC that aren't big enough to justify the price bump. Also, Amiibos artificially block some content to unnecesaries pieces of plastic junk, they're not game breaking but I would love to have access to the special armor, Epona and Wolf Link with an ingame mechanic instead of an artificial vault that you can only open with spending more money.

I would love it if they had made the Wii U version a more unique experience, it doesn't take advantage of the Wii U gamepad at all and it seems that at least some of the features of the original builds of the game were stripped out in order to make the Switch version more attractive.

I love this game, battling is great and the commitment from Nintendo into releasing it even after the unfortunate missapreciation that the Wii U suffered from the market, the developers and the press is a show of respect that I wouldn't expect from many companies.

The game is a must play.

Incredible open world, wonderful revamped combat system, great puzzle design in the shrines, good sidequests, yada yada yada. You all know all the good stuff about Breath of the Wild. Here are the reasons it's not a 10:

    - Bad story: Barely anything happens in the present; most of the cutscenes are about how Ganon came back 100 years ago and such, which makes the main quest feel boring because everything eventful has already happened.

    - Bad dungeons: The shrines, which serve as mini dungeons of sorts, are good, but the main dungeons themselves are cramped, not that well designed, and full of handholding with no room to explore and solve puzzles for yourself. Plus all of the bosses are too similar.

    - Not enough enemy variety: Past Zelda games would have dozens of enemy types to shake things up, but Breath of the Wild has barely more than 10, not counting different varieties of the same enemy types. Fighting the same footsoldiers over and over again across the massive world gets very repeptitive, and takes the life out of the otherwise beautiful world.

    - Unbalanced: Once you reach a certain point in Breath of the Wild, the combat becomes a joke, because you have started getting better weapons, but the enemies aren't getting that much stronger, with only a few exceptions. This is one major issue that went unsolved with the nonlinearity.

    - Slowdown: The game has issues with slowdown, especially in towns (moreso in the Wii U version). It was worse at launch, but it still happens a lot nowadays.

These are the biggest issues that popped out to me. There are other minor ones, but ultimately BotW is still a great game. Unfortunately it has issues that keep it from being a masterpiece.

This game is badly badly flawed, in so many ways. It just falls apart the more I play it and makes me feel worse and worse.

I have given this game a number of chances. I think this is the third time I have stopped playing and I can't see any hope for it. First time I came upon some of the surface flaws. Weapons breaking. This is the number 1 flaw in this game. I really don't care what their theory was for why this was a good idea, it plainly was not. It discouraged me from going anywhere or doing anything. every time I saw a monster or a tree or anything that required a weapon, I avoided it. what is the point in using your weapons when the trade-off is just not worth it. it's not a sensible risk. you would have to be an idiot to attack a group of enemies in this game, because you come out worse than you went in. for the most part when playing this first time, I avoided most encounters, I avoided exploring and I only ever used the worst weapon I had in my inventory at any time. because why would i want to break the best weapon I have? I might need it later. The whole system is just ridiculous. If I could repair them , then it might have made it better, but as it happens, it just discourages you from actually playing the game. I played this until I had defeated the first beast, in zora domain. at this point I felt like the story, the quests, everything was too disjointed to make it worthwhile playing with this weapon breaking dynamic. I was in Akkala and I realised the only way to get any fun out of the game was to be free to explore. so I quit.

Second time I played it, was after getting latest CEMU and the unbreakable weapon mod. This made a big difference. I finally felt free to actually play the game. I knew there was a carpenter in Akkala somewhere do I decided to explore with that as my basis. it felt like the only interesting thing that I had in my mind from my previous playthrough. So I spent a long time exploring that place. found some korok seeds, completed some shrines, smashed some rocks, picked up some plants, etc. I was just enjoying the game for 'what it is'. I played this way for about a week. I found the carpenter, and found the workshop. Carpenter just gave me some fetch quests, and the workshop was a tiny bit of story but nothing really major. It was at this point I realised that there wasn't really much in this game other than collecting things. the shrines are boring and dull. just a bunch of mini puzzles. I can get that from any indie game on steam. I don't do that because I don't like dull repetitive puzzles. I don't see any point in just collecting stuff. I certainly don't feel any kind of reward from the damn koroks. So it was here that I realised I was wasting my time. I was going to quit, but I noticed there was DLC available.

Third chance I gave this game. the DLC. I learnt I could get a thing for my horse so that I could teleport and actually bring my horse with me. that makes a big difference. so I went on that quest to do that. not a great quest to be honest. it involved looking for a bunch of places with very vague and obscure clues. for something that is supposed to help you to actually explore, the designers thought it made sense for you to have already explored everywhere. so it's an actual pointless item, that is only really available to the players who no longer need it. I heard about other things in this game that do the same thing. oh well, I went on the quest. what was it. a couple of treasure chests stuck in the ground. not flair at all. so that was disappointing. There is so much more wrong at this point I started to get angry. if it's raining, you can't see, so you have to wait, but you can't 'wait' because you can't make a fire in the rain. even under a shelter. There is so much more bad stuff, and no good stuff. no reward, no story development. The game is just terrible. This is like skyrim without the quest lines or interesting stories.

BREATH of the Wild is such a perfect title because this world is alive, it breathes. Everything just flows very organically. You always want to know what's around the next corner. "Oh there's a little forest. Let's see if I can shoot some deer. Pick up some mushrooms while I'm at it. Maybe cut down some trees for firewood. Am I going to use my sword for that or an axe? Or better yet, I'll use the bombs, so I can spare my weapons! What's up with this giant tree? Is there a Korok hiding here? My Shiekah radar is beeping, there must be a shrine nearby... Maybe behind this hill? Oh **** there's a guardian! Do I run away? Try to deflect his beam? Attack him with arrows? Should I use ancient arrows or should I save them for later?"

This really is an open-world game in the best sense of the expression. There are no endless text boxes explaining super-complicated control schemes and gameplay systems. The tutorial doesn't last for 20 hours+. There are no missions where you have to do EXACTLY what the game tells you to or you fail, the very opposite of what an open-world sandbox experience should be like (Looking at you, Rockstar...).

Taking the first step outside the cave where you start and having a look at the landscape is just magical. A whole world for you to explore.

After the game introduces you to the main mechanics in a fun way on The Great Plateau, you're free to go wherever you want and do whatever you want. This is the magic of BotW. Real Freedom. You can explore every nook and cranny, climb every mountain and get every upgrade imaginable. Or you can head straight to the final boss and try your luck with him with your three hearts (if you get that far). You can solve puzzles and defeat enemies in whatever way you like to. Whatever works, works. Better yet, things pretty much always work the way that you would expect them to, knowing the rules of this world.

For a common criticism: Many people seemed to expect this game to have the same kind of memorable, typical Zelda tunes that played in past Zelda games like Ocarina of Time. But just like with everything else, Nintendo took kind of a different approach here. First, you have to acknowledge that now pretty much the whole game (aside from the shrines and the Titans) is "overworld". So if there was a BotW Overworld-Theme, it would be playing all the time and you would probably get sick of it really quickly. Second, the "lack" of music really reinforces the atmosphere. Again, BREATH of The Wild. Breathing. Space. Quietness. I know a lot of people in our frenzied culture cannot stand to have even a moment of peace and quiet and need constant stimulation. But I personally really like the choice that was made here. Just simple, quiet piano or no music at all when traversing the vast stretches of Hyrule. It really helps immerse yourself in the feeling of exploring this empty, ruined land, that is paradoxically filled with life, secrets and imagination. Plus, there actually are quite a few noteable tracks in this game, like the music in Kakariko or Hateno. The former, after having been portrayed in the past as a small, lazy town and, after that, a Wild West settlement, has now been reimagined as a beautiful Japanese village.

Another common criticism is the presentation of the story or the lack thereof. Now, I think the way it was handled, through collectable flashbacks, is perfect for this game. This way, there is no story that needs to be advanced before you can get to the final boss. If you want to know the backstory, you can collect the memories. If you don't care, you don't have to, and everything in the game still makes sense. Again, everything in this game is about freedom and giving the player choice. And personally, I really liked the idea of the lost battle 100 years ago and exploring the ruined Hyrule, even if it may just have been a practical decision by the developers.

On top of all the aforementioned positives, there is the classical Nintendo/Zelda charm. The world is just filled with memorable, likeable characters. Every little NPC has a personality to them. Even though you are exploring a wild landscape by yourself (there is no companion character like Navi or Phi), you never feel alone or lonely.

Nintendo tried something new and very different for this iteration of the Zelda franchise, and it paid off BIG TIME. BotW is my favourite Zelda game and my all-time favourite video game in general. It's as close to perfect as you can possibly get. Everything is just designed and thought out so well and polished to make the experience very intuitive and the best that it can be. It's a masterpiece and a true work of art.

I watched a youtube video a while ago, it explains that each event is spread out by exactly 40 seconds. That source of praise for some is probably a large part of why I hate the game. The game survives by using it's metronome like action to turn you into a mindless zombie. Because of it the exploration is not fun, it's just easy to lose track of time doing it.

The main reasons this series gets undue praise is that it's absorbing and big. Both act to the detriment of the game.

Continuing with the absorbing nature of the game, the pacing of 40 seconds actually acts to the detriment of the exploration. Dead space is important, and constantly spacing things out by roughly 40 seconds means there is no dead space. Everything is routine. Furthermore the content that you come across every 40 seconds is not of any value. There rare things that do have value are often pointed to directly by waypoints.

This leads me to my next point, the world is big but vapid. There's not enough dead space in the game, but you could also say the majority of the game is dead space. There's so much stuff in the game but almost none of it has any merit. Exploration only works if there's something to find, and the few worthwhile things I found do not make it worth wading through the hours and hours of worthless things to find.

That's most of my criticism for the game, the core gameplay isn't fun because the finding of things in regular intervals lulls you into a trance that makes you not cognisant of the environment and there's just nothing of value to find.

Aside from that THE ENDING SUCKED. Nobody of their right mind could like that ending, an easy bossfight makes all the work of freeing the divine beasts feel redundant and afterwards you're greeted with a second boss-fight that barely surpasses a cut-scene in difficulty.

Princess Zelda gets next to no characterisation despite me hearing praise for her character repeatedly, and honestly development for her would be far better rewards for exploration than a shrine. That said, what bits of development we do get are also terrible. They're barely better than her staring at the camera and explaining "oh boy do I feel like a failure because I haven't been able to summon the power of the goddess". If we were given a lot more cutscenes that were less direct about it, it would've made her into a far more compelling character.

The shrines are complete garbage, I'm literally looking at a review that calls them "fun". The biggest challenge in the shrines is sitting through the loading screen at each end.

Every town is marked on the map, making stumbling upon them impossible and they're most of what's worth finding.

Your horse is basically never around (unless you buy the DLC) making traversing long empty fields a pain. It'd be great if we could mount a large wolf-like creature that'll follow us up cliffs.

Your powers don't start recharging until you've used up all three charges and don't progress any further even if you use the in-game time-passing functionality.

All in all I regret my time with BOTW. Lame exploration, lame world, lame story, lame shrines (which add up to about 8 hours of my 70 hours in game), lame Princess Zelda, lame horse, lame experience. There are a few quests in the game that work, and a few divine-beast related cutscenes and I really like that each town has it's own musical theme but that's not enough to carry a 70 hour game that isn't fun.

What I mean by that is that "going off the beaten path" is not just an option but is a requirement for this game. This game is not the destination but the JOURNEY. Every time you open your map, you are just amazed at the sheer size of this world. As for the combat, it's relatively simple but still painstakingly difficult. So by the end of the game, you will notice that you have developed as a player (without some ridiculous buff or power-up).

The graphics and enemy AI have received a massive upgrade from the previous games. In fact, almost everything is different. The only thing similar to the other games is the three main characters, the triforce, and the master sword. As a long time Zelda fan, this is the best one yet.

Zelda: BotW is one of those games that can really help one re-kindle the love and passion towards video games once again in these dark times. The LoZ series has never exactly suffered of lack of quality, but its highest highs are so towering, that even "pretty good" results may seem pathetic in comparison at times.
Breath Of The Wild tackles two seemingly opposing tasks at once: taking the series back to its VERY roots, as in NES' Zelda 1, and providing a modern, truly open-world experience as well. Most of the fans already do know that LoZ1 was technically one of the earliest "open world" games, with no real guidance forcing you down to a specific path. Thus, BotW mimicking this design style is not exactly anything new, but how it goes performing this task is nothing short of unique and amazing.

After the relative short, yet already very non-patronizing "tutorial section", which itself has more freedom and features than some full games, the player is free to explore the now ruined world of Hyrule as they please. You get only a couple pointers that you may choose to follow at your own pace, like the ultimate goal of defeating the final evil that constantly lurks in the horizon, but ultimately BotW is all about free, self-imposed exploration, discovery, and improving yourself in order to take on even bigger challenges. Unlike in most other, modern open-world games, you're not given a pile of tasks and checklists to complete; instead, your own curiosity guides you at all times, to adventures not written down as a script. It's quite common to climb on top of a good vantage point, scan the landscape, see one or two interesting details in the environment, and start proceeding towards them ... only to get distracted mid-way by something totally different and forget what you were doing originally.

You get a handful of magical items almost right off the bat, and it's up to you to figure out when and how to use these dynamic tools during your quest. Not only that, the game seemingly lacks traditional obstacles, as just about every single wall, cliff and tree can be climbed. This vertical freedom truly opens up the world in never before seen ways, but at the same time it's balanced with the simple stamina system and the dynamic, area-specific weather conditions. You can help your character's own performance in numerous ways, such as by equipping various clothes that provide stat boosts, or by cooking dishes and potions that provide a momentary effects.

Which brings me to the next innovation and milestone of this game: its pile of intertwined systems and physics. Just about everything seems to interact with everything in a logical, albeit in exaggerated ways in BotW: grass and wooden items may catch fire, metal and water conduct electricity, trees may be chopped down and used to form bridges or make-shift boulder traps, fire-based weapons and hot food protect you from freezing blizzards and cold items from burning heat ... the list goes on. Ergo, a smart player can exploit these systems in many clever ways, tackling obstacles in innovative ways, thus saving you from the trouble of just walking and trying to smack things dead.

If you go around lurking on the internet, you may find nitpicks about most things you may discover in the Hyrule to boil down to two types of collectibles. While you indeed will get very familiar with Shrines and Seeds, make no mistake: the game has tons of other content as well. However, because the joy of exploration and discovering things yourself is such a centric part of BotW's appeal, I'd rather avoid spoiling too much of these elements. I can however say that old-time fans may locate things that will certainly tickle their nostalgic heart.

Audio-visually BotW is top-notch. The non-realistic art style helps make the game world feel more cohesive, believable even with all its magical feats. Yet it is indeed very impressive to see some of the more modern effects, such as screen-space reflections, wet-surface effects and dynamic lighting, to be used in a WiiU game. At best, the game truly looks beautiful, and the atmospheric, sparingly used soundtrack only enhances the exploration.

Controls are nothing special, but I don't feel like they ever got in my way. Some of the menu designs clearly hint at the game being designed to use the touch-screen at one point, but unfortunately now you can only use the tablet for gyro-aiming (big help when using a bow!) and to toggle the image between TV and the tablet.

tl;dr: Breath Of The Wild is THE most "open" open-world game ever. The most dynamic and detailed open world game, ever. One of the least handholding open-world game, ever. This game's an adventure, not a story-rich fairytale you consume in one sitting. And I dare to say, this might be the first game to truly rival the GOTYAY titles like Ocarina Of Time and Majora's Mask. And I don't easily give such praise.

Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece in game design. It is not a perfect game, and it is not the greatest game of all time, but it is close enough to the two to recommend a thorough play-through.

    Graphics: 8/10

The art style, which is inspired by Impressionist paintings and Studio Ghibli films, is "breath" - taking (pun intended). Characters and important objects leap off the screen beautifully. The same cannot be said of the landscape. While there are many beautiful views in the game, some landscapes look dull up close and do not match the beauty of the rest of the game. Also, frame-rate drops occasionally annoyed me, but outside of the Gerudo region and the Great Hyrule Forest, they rarely were bad enough to impede my enjoyment of the game.

    Sound Design: 9/10

The soundtrack of this game, which mostly has tracks inspired by Impressionists like Claude Debussy, is beautiful. It matches the underlying emotions rather than the action, it gets an incredible amount of timbres out of piano and percussion, and it makes great use of motifs throughout. The sound effects are perfect for everything, although they often overpower the music. The voice acting is average, but there are two major problems with it. First, Zelda and Mipha sound exactly the same. I'm sure the actresses did the best they could, that was probably a casting problem at Nintendo of America. Second, the voice acting always overpowers the music in some way. This is especially noticeable with Mipha, who has a soft voice THAT IS REALLY LOUD.

    Gameplay: 10/10

The gameplay is not perfect, for it has the weapon durability system. This has been a love-it-or-hate-it system for most people, but I am sort of in the middle. Yes, it would be better if it worked more like Dark Souls' weapon system, with blacksmiths that can repair your weapons. However, this is only a problem in the early game, where every weapon breaks in ten hits or less. Outside of the weapon durability system, everything is perfect. Every mechanic fits together in an immaculately designed world to give you complete freedom over your surrounding. It is easier to experience the joys of the mechanics than to explain them, but they give the game its identity. I do wish there were more bosses though, but that is personal preference.

    Controls: 9/10

The controls feel good, except for one thing. Whenever I was in first-person mode, the controls felt sluggish and slow to act. In third-person mode, which is what you will be in most of the game, the controls fit like the pants Link finds around the world.

    Story: 8/10

This game is a great lesson on how to do environmental and non-linear storytelling right. However, once you look past the amazing storytelling techniques and unique characters, the story becomes sort of generic. Sure, there a great subplot about Zelda's relationship with Link and her discovering her power, but people seem to forget that is not the main plot. Sure, it has a big impact on the tone of the main plot, but it is not the main plot. In fact, Nintendo seems to have put more effort into the subplots than the main plot. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but I will give the story an 8 out of 10 regardless.

    Summary:

Given the sub-scores I just gave you, most people would rate the game a 9 out of 10. Now, if that is their opinion, I'm fine with that. However, this game is truly special. It takes its amazing parts and combines them to form a whole that is greater than the sum. It knows it is not perfect, yet that does not stop it from serving immaculate gameplay in a beautiful world set to an incredible soundtrack. This game is revolutionary, artistic, refreshing, and so much more. This is the bar that open-world games will strive to reach in the future. But that is simply my opinion, and I am open to other people's opinions, so please, go into this game with an open mind, and you may be surprised what you find.

And sure, Zelda Breath of the Wild is not perfect either. But if I don't hand out a 10 out of 10 now I'll never do it. So, 10. An absolutely shining and sparkling 10.

After 30+ years of gaming this is what it came down to and it is an absolute bliss. Thank you Nintendo!

Full disclosure: this is my first Zelda game and damn I can't help but wonder how differently it may have scored with critics if they were approaching Zelda for the first time as I am.

Gameplay; this is supposed to be a videogame i.e. it's meant to be fun and entertaining. It instead turns out to be the most boring and repetitive game I have ever played. I had heard of Zelda's reputation for recycling dugeons; wow how many times do I have to redo the same things again? It's as if I have no life besides playing videogames or what? It's just a walking, climbing simulator with annoying mechanics such as temperature and wearing down of weapons and tools. Ok, clearly wearing down is not a bad thing but in Zelda it's a painstaking process. If this was Minecraft at least you could repair just about anything but now this? I quit about 3 hours in.

Graphics: Let's start with the positive: very nice artstyle and physics. The negative? Everything else. This looks like a game from 2012 at best. The original Wii U's Zelda tech demo was soooo much nicer than this. It's a tragedy that Ubisoft and others get crucified over minor graphical downgrades and this piece of crap gets a free pass... and GOTY? What ?

Verdict: 2/10. Even a 5/10 I could think of reasons to return to. This? Nope. This game does not deserve GOTY in fact it would not have attracted my attention if it hadn't and my life would be better for it.

Recommendation; buy the console and game at a place like Costco this way you can return no questions asked if you are as disappointed as I was.

I loved this game, it's funny, long as hell, and just stunning in every aspect. Perfect for people who like to explore, solve puzzles and adventure games in general. I really missed the classic dungeons like the ones from previous entries an I also noticed a lot of issues in terms of frame rate but I don't think that affected my experience with the game. Masterpiece.

Game greatest strength is also his greatest weakness story telling, gives freedom to the player so you can create your own story but also lacks of a strong narrative, it depends on how creative you are. Beautiful game and one of the best open world games ever made.

I bought this game the day it came out along with all the Amiibos, and well, I hold no regrets. In fact, the week it came out I pretty much did nothing else until I beat it. I must have sunk at least 100 hours into it and I enjoyed every single of it.

The open-world really was a great idea! For reference, the game never forces you to do anything you personally don't want to it. If you want, (after you get the glider) you can go to the final boss. In my opinion, this is the game that did it the best. Sorry Witcher and Skyrim, but in my honestly opinion Breath of the Wild has to have the funnest open-world to travel in. For reference, I got bored of Witcher and while I had fun with Skyrim, I had to use a horse most of the time in Elder Scrolls. I know that this may sound weird, but I never found a need to travel on horse-back. That is how much I had fun travelling through the world. I tried riding on a horse, but I found myself missing more things then if I just traveled on foot or glided through the air.

I never got bored in Breath of the Wild. I always found something to do no matter how small or tiny it seemed.

I could go on, but this is a game that I feel like you should experience yourself. If you have a Nintendo Switch or a Wii U, you should own this game.

This is a Zelda game but it has got its flaws. They should be mentioned and the eternal Nintendo nostalgia should be put aside because it has metaphorically become a source of sickness.

Starting with the hardware and the frame drop is a source of frustration. A company the size and economic power of Nintendo should be doing better than this. It should be avoiding the eternal excuse it is the game experience that matters. Lower quality graphics can be ok but frame drop is unacceptable, anti-game experience and repeat frustrating.

Continuing with the gameplay, the one-shot game overs and the constant breaking of the weapons is another source of frustration. It even goes beyond frustration and generates anger in the player. Travelling long distances for exploring and suddenly getting one-shot is not nice. This is a first open world for Zelda and the flaws are more than visible. The balance in the open-world playing experience is not there.

Moving on to cinematics and voice-acting. Once again the experience lacks completeness. There is voice acting in some scenes but once the cinematic is over it goes back to the text boxes. Compared to a game like AC where there is voice acting even during gameplay e.g. when following an ally, Nintendo is lagging far behind in this sector.

Lastly, there is a robotic style of developing a game from the side of Nintendo. What models have we got in our inventory? this and that ok how to combine them together? ok then now use them. First make the models, then robotically dress it up with some reused storyline. Does it fit? Who cares? After creating a story timeline in Hyrule Historia probably for selling a few copies of a book, now it is scrapped just like that. The story is meshed up again.

And my final thoughts: It does not mean that a pioneer in the pixel-era of gaming should continue getting praise even for underperforming open-world modern games, just because they pioneered back in the 80s. If a game like Far Cry gets 8 points on average, when it is much more advanced in gameplay balance and cinematics and overall feeling, then Breath of the Wild is half that and can only get a 4 from my side.

And, well, it's among the worst games I've ever played. Graphics are sub par even to other Nintendo titles, early game story is non existent and the sound design is utterly bad (the "pick up a new item" sound is identical to the error message-sound from Window XP, so every time I pick up a new item I think there's something wrong with the console).

Possibly a great game for those who've had a close relationship with Link over the last 30 years. But for me? No! Absolutely not. An utter disappointment. Will keep to other RPGs in the future.

The only issue with the game (in the WiiU version) is that sometimes has framerate drops, mainly in the villages and in the Forest. But besides that, nothing to complain about it. Well, the DLC could have been better and explore new possibilities, but this is just my opinion. Still pretty good in overall.

I’ll be honest - I was more than skeptical buying the Wii U version of this game, but since I didn’t have a Switch and I was so desperate to play it, there was no other choice. However, I’m glad to say that my worries have been set aside!

I’ve been playing the game for over 30 hours now and there is still no end in sight, which may seem tedious but in fact the game always gives you new objectives, whether it be self-set or in your quest log. On the topic of self-set objectives, I’ll always find myself distracted from my main goal. For example, I climb onto a mountain and see a shrine in the distance (a mini dungeon that there are 120 of) and start paragliding towards it. I then notice a camp of Bokoblins and decide to ambush them instead. By the time I’m at the shrine, it’s already been a good 15 minutes!

I won’t spoil anything here, but the story is refreshing, even for a Zelda game, and blends perfectly with the open-world and exploration. Most of the game’s characters are unique and memorable and I’ve even found myself in the market for some of the Amiibo!

Speaking of Amiibo, they offer a great boost to those who already have them. Amiibo can be used once a day and provide Link with some random food, materials and herbs. However, use a Legend of Zelda Amiibo and you’ll be rewarded with some special items! For example, by using the 8-Bit Link Amiibo you will obtain the outfit from the original Legend of Zelda and also some Rupees as an added bonus. I already own quite a few Amiibo myself so I was pleased to see them utilised so well!

I’ve been reading some reports on framerate issues and I’m happy to say that they are VERY rare. The only two instances I can give are in the water at the very first shrine (but strangely no other water) and at Kakariko Village. Other than that, I’ve had no problems and the Wii U version compares vey nicely to the Switch version!

Overall, this game is a refreshing experience that can be enjoyed by anyone! The mechanics are so unique that they don’t get boring, even after 30+ hours, (although some friends of mine have logged over 70 hours) but still carry that ‘Zelda Vibe’ that makes the series instantly recognisable. Just yesterday, I went to the bathroom and came back to find my 10 year old brother exploring the world and loving it just as much as I did! I would highly recommend picking up this game!

Running around the tall grass in this huge world didn't make the game lag, at least I didn't notice it. Pop in and pop out also happened but I barley payed attention and didn't ruin the experience for me. I'd say my one complaint I have with the game is a few of it's shrines. I mostly played the game with the pro controller but there were a few shrines that required motion controls to beat it. During these times I had to switch on over to the gamepad so I could beat it, then switch back to using the pro controller once more. I also wish you could manage inventory on the gamepad but sadly you cannot. But these minor complaints, plus some lagging issues, don't ruin the experience of an otherwise great game. I'd talk about the game itself, but I won't waste your time telling you things you already know. If you still don't have a Switch and are one of five people to own a Wii U, this version isn't as bad as you may think. PS: the game has some flaws of couse but the game is amazing and still deserves a 10 even with these mistakes

Breath Of The Wild is one the best Zelda games, the open world is beautiful and vast, and there's a lot of things to do to explore it. I don't think this is as good as Ocarina of Time, mainly bacause the story wasn't so great and the dungeons were extremely short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is the ultimate Zelda game, as it's challenging in a way that it isn't frustrating and it is very satisfying. The scenery is beautiful and the characters are really interesting and you feel like you are making a real impact in the world. The cutscenes and voice acing are on point and surviving in this world is a fun challenge, as it can be difficult without the proper equipment and the blood moons are a challenge itself.

The story feels unique while keeping the same core of the original games and the open world is not only beautiful but massive, and the shrines are a fun challenge that test not only your combat skills, but also your intellect.

I got this game yesterday and I haven't been able to put it down since and if you can, i'd recommend picking this game up as this will give you endless fun for ages!

This game is one of the absolute best! The fact Nintendo has changed the formula of the game in my opinion made it better. Like the new open world style give you much more freedom! To start off, the game-play. The game will potentially have slight FPS drops due to the systems limitations, but they're hardly noticeable in game. Lag spikes are very rare and not a problem. Second, the controls. There is much variety of things to do with Link, all of which are controlled beautifully. Even the motion controls, usually infamous in a lot of cases, work great in breath of the wild. The controls are smooth and feel right. Also, the graphics. The graphics are absolutely beautiful. The detail on the grass is the best I've ever seen in a video game and the gloom effect on the sun is fantastic. The water, even with its simple design looks like I could actually swim in it. And the game is so live! Things are constantly moving, whether its the grass or a bug or an enemy sleeping or traveler, it varies amazingly! The variety of animals is amazing itself! The game constantly contains references to past games, which i'll leave out for spoiler reasons, but if you've played other Zelda games it should come to you. Admittedly, this game is not everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely more of a challenge. I personally enjoy the challenge it gives you, in the past Zelda games were lacking challenge, and this game was actually skill based in combat and had tough enemies. This is also the first game where I felt like Zelda was a character. In the past she was more of an emotionless fill in as a princess you just HAD to safe (except for Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword) but she felt relatable. Especially when you get really deep in the story, you fall in love with her. And the stories absolutely amazing, especially when you collect all the parts of the story. All in all, Breath of the Wild is my favorite Zelda game and favorite game in general, i'm excited to see more of what Nintendo has for us! Expand

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an absolute joy to play as it's an undeniably rewarding adventure set in a deeply immersive world. Although the experience is weighed down by a few minor problems, the overall journey is one that no gamer will soon forget.

Breath of the Wild can’t be compared to the likes of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim because it’s not trying to be those games -- it’s a Nintendo game -- and series -- all grown up. It has a lot to offer and will keep you engaged for lengthy periods of time. If you’re playing on Switch as you absolutely should be, then you can also Zelda wherever you go. It’s arguably not the best Zelda game, but damn, it might be the most polished, and the most ambitious.

Does it have the best combat system in the world? No. Is it the best looking game out there? No. Does it have the best RPG soundtrack ever? No. Can the game make you feel like you are eight years old again? Hell yes. It certainly had that effect with me. It has been a long time since exploring, fighting, and adventuring has so consistently brought a smile to my face. Breath of the Wild is such a wonderful experience that once you play it, you will likely never look at open world games the same again.
