Online play is very laggy. The roster is actually a downgrade from Brawl, something I thought I'd never see in the Smash Bros series. Overall it just feels very lazily made, especially with many of the new characters reusing existing mechanics, and 20% of the roster having a counter as one of their B attacks now. The controls feel slippery and imprecise.

A lot of people who don't like the game compare it to Melee, but I don't even care about that. It stands as a bad game on its own.

Fun game as long as you're with friends, but that is about the only time. 8-player smash, the game mode everyone was so excited for, but I knew was gonna suck. I constantly lose myself. 6-player smash was okay, but 4 remained the best. Online mode is ok. The new maps range from good to bad. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I found myself just using the final destination mode on every stage because the new stages blow, ESPECIALLY the Pac-Man stage. The new character additions are meh. I felt they added more characters to the series that don't really need them since they aren't as popular. Not trying to speak for everyone, but every person I have talked to about this games roster said they would have preferred more characters from the Sonic series, the Donkey Kong series, the return of Lucas, the Metroid Series, or the Star-Fox series. The game modes are a disappointment. Most of them are just returns from its predecessors, but they aren't as fun. They ruined Classic Mode. I was so excited to go through it but now its just horrible. Why did they remove going through battles in one go? It isn't a "Classic" mode if they modified it so much. Also, no adventure mode. What were they thinking? Single player in Brawl only lasted for me because there was a story mode. Playing tons of pointless matches alone will only last for so long. Playing Smash with friends, however, is always a fun time. That's where every flaw is negligible. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're playing this with a friend it should be fine. In my case, though, multiplayer is fun but loses its flare in about 45 minutes to an hour before I start getting bored of the same thing over and over again. My friend who I normally play with can play for hours, so I guess that says something. A solid, polished game- undeserving of its god-like praise in my opinion. Expand

That said, naturally there is no way I am going to give this good score as it is now, if anything i am being generous as basically whole game is rather broken for me. hopefully nintendo manages to make online better, I shall raise my rating then. This game feels at first like it should be good, but for a game with emphasis on player-vs-player duels (the single player modes are absolutely anemic compared to Brawl or Melee), it's off in very subtle ways. There are situations in *every match* where something happens to a player that no one involved can explain - and this is with items off!

Nintendo (Namco?) has spent a lot of time trying for character balance, but they've missed the larger boat of a fighting game that feels responsive and satisfying. I wanted to like this game, but I just can't.

Smash is back, better than ever. The mechanics are much more quick-paced like Melee as opposed to the sluggish Brawl physics. However, while the core requirements are meant, a few minor things do irk me about this title.

For one, all but 9 characters are given to you at the start. While that may sound awesome initially, I found the rewarding system of character unlocks was all but gone in this title.

Secondly, the Classic mode is pretty weird this time around. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems to be some strange battle royale system that's never adequately explained.

Lastly, and this is the biggest issue, the target smash system. Target smash was in its prime back in Melee when each character had their own, charater-specific stages. In brawl, they pussied out and gave us just a few generic stages that could be played on with any character. But in SSBWiiU, they completely ruin this once mighty minigame. Instead of breaking the targets yourself, you launch a bomb across a field into a group of structures containing targets (sound familiar?). The result is a train wreck of an experience. The glass cage which surrounds your starting platform seldom ever breaks, resulting in all too many infuriating explosions at ground zero. On the off chance that you can actually manage to propel the explosive through the cage, what follows is an underwhelming cutscene of an explosion. The Target Smash in this game just isn't fun; it's a poor man's Angry Birds.

However, SSBWiiU is filled to the brim and above with content, and anything I haven't mentioned above works flawlessly and provides more entertainment then the past installments put together. It's been a while since I felt so in need of video game time, most games aren't that addicting to me anymore. But this title keeps calling me back. Now if you'll excuse me...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These games are supposed to be fun and be a crossover of the main cast of various videogame franchises. Well, to me, this game...AND Brawl fails to meet this. Now compared to the 3DS ver. this one IS better, but not by far. Brawl first introduced a story mode. But guess what? Sakurai decides to remove the story mode they've been working on for this game because 'people are watching it on YouTube' which is as vague as anyone can get.
Now In SSB-64 and Melee we had new characters that retain their popular voices, likeness, and design, and the returning characters experience the same. But someone not right in the head decides that Twilight Princess Link (Akira Sasanuma) is more notable and more recognizable in the Zelda franchise than OoT Link (Nobuyuki Hiyama). The fact that Hiyama didn't voice Link in that game is why people hated it, same went with Twilight Princess Ganondorf (who sounds like he has a cockroach in his throat while inhaling copious traces of helium). They bother to remove Link's Illusion Stab but character who don't need, let alone deserve it, have mash-attacks (like King Dedede, Palutena, Pit, Bowser Jr, Diddy Kong, etc). Not to mention since it's TP Link we are literally FORCED to use the Gale Boomerange which royally sucks. They downright give out too much transformation attacks as Final Smashes (which are mostly downright useless). They apparently had the gall to replace Marth's Shield Breaker with this pansy Thrust of the same name. Lucina is pointless, she literally has the EXACT moveset of Marth, NO DIFFERENCE, not even speed or DMGwise! Upon getting the game, unloicking characters doing events, hr contest and classic mode, there is NOTHING for you to do. Target Blast is a joke, it is really nothing but luck purely. And what were they on to think adding VILLAGER from Animal Crossing would make sense. His side smash is LITERALLY him dropping a bowling ball in front of himself. I can't even comprehend how he can even charge that attack! I'm also tired of the challenges forcing you to be someone that sucks. ie: to get this reward k.O a giant bowser with Tiny olimar in less than 40 seconds!) OLIMAR sucks. He has no reach and even his smash attacks do nothing against him. People are going crazy over this game and I think it's undeserved. This game would be far greater if it had this:
    NOBUYUKI HIYAMA Link
    TAKASHI NAGASAKO Ganondorf.
    NOTHING from Twilight Princess.
Roy and Pichu back (either as a character or assist).

Hell, people say this game added a ton of new modes. No they didn't all the new things you get is: Target Blast, Torphy Rush, Smash Run/Smash Tour (which is really stupid, they barely even explain how much of any of it works), 8-player smash, special orders, and stage builder. Just how miniscule these modes are don't even make much of them worth a single mode in countenance(I'd barely consider them as two modes in total). The Mii Fighters are demeaning. 'There are so many people I can't add so you can create them yourselves as a Mii fighter' says Sakurai. Right, right, So I'm sure I can give a Mii red, blue, pink, or even purple hair, right? Nope, the most you can get out of hair color from miis is blonde, brown, light brown, black, and auburn. The Gunner is a more of a Samus clone than anything. The Brawler is clearly Ryu from Street fighter. The swordfighter is the worst, ALL OF HIS ATTACKS are centered around being ninja-oriented, especially with him constantly having his sword being held in reverse grip most of the time. Why can't you create the moveset why can't you clone from an existing ACTUAL fighter? And to top it all off the Mii Swordfighter's Final Smash SUCKS. He raises his sword and shoots out a myriad of blade beams. But what's that? The Mii Brawlers gets a Dissidia-Omnislash Style final smash. You'd be lucky if Swordfighter's baldebeams even smash an opp. It's worthless. Not to mention. What's the point in creating a fighter if he has NO VOICE? Why can't you just select from a preset voice for custom characters or choose your own from the console memory/sd card?
Bottom line is Melee's easily better.

The game looks fantastic, plays fantastic, and the soundtrack (like usual) is awesome.Classic mode is pretty cool with different intensities and choosable routes. Stage builder is more customizable than ever and is easy to use, but it would be nice if you could do 8-player battles on them. Some of the new characters are awesome like Rosalina and Luma, Mega man, Pacman, etc. They balanced OP characters from brawl *cough* Meta Knight. And the new items are fun.
If you were used to the controls from its 3ds counterpart, the grab has changed and is now the ZR and ZL and shielding is R and L. This threw me off as the 3ds 's default grabbing was L and default shielding was R. I am aware you can change the controls under a name and select the name before playing, but with gamemodes like smash tour and events, I am forced to use the default controls, which I will always screw up using. That was one of many flaws this game hosts. The content feels sort of lacking, with no story or adventure mode to play through, instead you have many gamemodes that either are stupid and not needed or just boring. All-star mode remains unchanged from the 3ds version, aside from facing fighters in reverse-chronological order. 8-player mode was a welcome concept that allows more than 4 players to join in, but if you are playing with all 8 players it is too chaotic and the maps you are restricted to play on seem a little odd. Crazy orders are pretty fun, but master orders seem rather unnecessary and I feel like they were just put there as a content filler. Smash tour is pretty boring and very disorienting as so much is going on at once, and the stats and fighters on your team are extremely small and hard to read.
You are given way too many characters and stages already unlocked off the bat which are way easier to unlock compared to previous games, which takes a lot of the fun, challenge and replay value out of the game. There are too many retro stages (which aren't even organized/separated from new ones) and not enough new, creative stages. Cool characters like Ice Climbers, Snake, Lucas and Wolf were ripped from the roster in replacement for stupid clones like Dark Pit and Dr. Mario.
Easily the worst part of the game is the online. I don't even bother playing free-for-all matches as all it takes is one person with a bad connection to turn 2 minutes into 6 minutes of laggy hell and if you try to leave you are temporarily banned. It is beyond me why 'For Glory' free-for-all matches and team matches are timed. However 1-on-1 for glory matches are quite smooth and thankfully are stocked.

Let me reiterate by saying, this game is great, but far from perfect. I would rate it 7.5 out of ten but since that's not possible, for now, it is a 7/10.

As an avid Smash Bros. predictor, I was slightly disappointed that the roster wasn;t bigger, but it strikes a balance never seen before in a Smash Bros. game (no completely overpowered characters that have been discovered so far), and customizing character's abilities and specials adds a butt-ton of replay value.
The new modes are all pretty fun too (including Smash Tour, as long as you have a friend with you), but they can get stale after a while. I suggest rotating what you do to provide a bigger variety in gameplay experience.
The stages are incredible- the best of any Smash Bros. game to date. And we get a ton of great music scores to boot as well! Well over 50% of them are going to be going on my phone.
Overall, it makes some slight but successful changes to the Smash Bros. formula and is a blast to play with friends. I give it a 9.5 (rounded up to a 10).

Well it's a smash bros game so it is bound to be good, but is it really that good?

My overall experience so far with the game has been of slight disappointment, about the same I felt with Brawl but for slightly different reasons. I'll list my biggest gripes to let you know what I find frustrating about the design of the game:

First and foremost - when you have three generations of a game that have taught you that the backmost left and right triggers are for shield, and the closer smaller trigger button(s) are for grabs, why would you go and change that for the wii u controller? And not only that, but this is the most ridiculous part of all - why would you make it so the only way you can change controls is to assign them to a "name", and then give you absolutely no way to choose a default name for your controller or login? That makes absolutely no sense, and is mind numbingly frustrating to deal with when you forgot to change your name in the bottom left before every match or game mode, and you go to execute a block, roll, or grab, and the buttons are reversed from what you've grown to learn for nearly a decade of a games existence. That's an automatic -2 from the score right there. No excuse for them to overlook this, you can't tell me not one person in that entire company could have thought this to be a bad game design decision.

My next issue is the removal of the adventure mode in favor of this smash tour mode. Smash tour mode simply put is just lackluster. It is too rng based and there isn't much skill to be had here, I guess they wanted to make a mario party type hybrid mode in the game? I'd be fine w/ it if they still included the adventure mode, which in my opinion was incredibly fun in melee/brawl. You can't even choose the difficulty level on the ai opponents for the board game mode, so clearly it was rushed out, the whole game seems like it was released a bit early to be honest. -1 for the exclusion of adventure mode and addition of rushed modes that don't really work that well.

There is also lag present in the game, which should just not be happening in this day and age for console games. You know exactly the hardware your game will be running on, if it is lagging as often and as badly as it does. -1 for this.

There are other minor qualms I have but the above are mainly why I have to detract from the score. The "good" has already been highlighted by enough reviewers already that I don't need to go over that, but I am mainly writing this review to give you a little more realistic view of what you are getting with this game, if you are irked by the type of things that irk me.

    PROS

    # Its Still the same Smash Bros that we all got around the couch for in the Gamecube and Wii days, It strikes the right balance as being faster than Brawl though not as fast as Melee, just that right balance that I like

    # The character roster is impressive, one of the strongest I've seen in a fighting game just outside of Marvel VS Capcom 2, I especially like some the new characters, I really grew fond of Shulk and Pac-Man rather quickly.

    # 8 Player Smash is really fun, my personal preference is 6 as I feel that's the right balance of players on the field without being too chaotic.

    # LOTS of unlockables, they will certainly keep you busy for weeks on end.

    WHAT I DON'T LIKE

    # The Menu's are a bit tricky to navigate, the fact that some buttons are smaller than others and not very well titled makes them a bit of a hassle to navigate.

    # Lots of recycled assets in the form of Stages and Music tracks, while they are nice to see return I would have appreciated a bit more originality.

    # Smash Tour is lame. Its too randomised and a bit of a slog to be enjoyable. My friends and I tried it twice, the 2nd time when we knew what we were doing and didn't go back to it..

    # Classic mode shares a really annoying gripe I have with Kid Icarus: Uprising, and that is when you die the difficulty is automatically lowered. URRRGHHH DON'T F*****G DO THAT SAKURAI, IT FEELS INCREDIBLY CONDESCENDING AS IF THE GAME IS SAYING: "Oh its too hard for you? Let me make it easier" NO!!! I want to learn from my mistakes not have the experienced dumbed down.

The gameplay and controls are really easy to pick up and learn, if you have played Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii or the 3DS version of this game, you will master the Wii U version without stress.
The amount of fighters and stages has increased diversely from Brawl and even has more characters than the 3DS version. All of the stages are really fun to brawl on and there isn't a single stage I didn't like.
There are tons of new challenges to complete, more trophies and many familiar game modes (Classic, events, stadium, all-stars etc.) return, some with slightly new spins and others in their original former glory!
One of the main new modes in the game is 8-player smash, which allows you to play with up to 7 other friends or CPU controlled characters, I personally found 8 player smash to be a lot of fun, I haven't had the chance to play with friends yet, but I simply cannot wait to do so!

    Cons:
Not all of the new modes are awesome, I personally found the Smash Tour mode to be tedious and I personally wouldn't want to sink any of my time into it.

Overall, Super Smash Bros for Wii U is a fantastic experience, it is by far the best game of 2014 (The only other game from 2014 i have played is FIFA 15, and who would give that a GOTY award?) and because of this game alone, there is absolutely NO reason the Wii U shouldn't be selling well.

10/10 (The problems aren't even worth mentioning as they are so minute and don't take away from the experience)

This is one of the greatest game ever made. The soundtrack is undeniably the best in video game history. it includes the best tracks of Nintendo's (and third party companies) history, which would make this the best soundtrack ever on its own, but it also includes several remixes of old tracks that sound AMAZING! Look up Spark Man Stage music on YouTube and you will know what I mean. They even decided to go ahead and remix music from Mario Kart 8! A game released a few months ago on the Wii U as well! That's called dedication. Anyway, the gameplay has been perfected from past games. Remember those characters in Brawl of Melee that could spam their regular combo? Yeah, screw that, those aren't found here, thank God. The roster of characters is astounding, including characters like Mega Man, Pac-Man, Rosalina (a personal favorite of mine), and even MewTwo in the near future. Also, when you get above 100% in damage, your fighter now has a smoke effect that instantly warns you when you are at risk of being killed. Also, when you attack an opponent when they are at a dangerous health, they now emit a red spark letting you know that they would probably die then. The maps in this game are the best I have seen in a Smash Bros game, or any fighting/racing/party game. They are all unique in cool ways, like how the Mario Galaxy stage has its own special gravity along the planet, and the Mario Kart 8 stage puts you up against the track at different angles so the karts can do massive damage from multiple locations. Unlike the 3DS version, the stages that returned from past games were much better than stuff like Jungle Japes on 3DS (lol wat). In terms of new game modes, there is so much new stuff here. First, they expand on the returning modes by adding competitive/co op multiplayer to familiar game modes. Also, classic mode is changed drastically. It features you on a game board advancing based on how well you do. Target Blast is okay. It certainly isn't as good as before, but it is still decent. They should have included the old mode, but whatever. All star mode has been improved from the 3DS version since you don't have to jump over the door to get to the health items. The door is on an elevated platform, so you can walk under it to get to the items. The online mode is the best ever with it actually functioning unlike Brawl. It features For Fun and For Glory, depending on how good you think you are. The game has SO MANY CONTROLLER OPTIONS. There is something in the controller department for anybody. The only problem i have with this game is that the blowing item thing from Skyward Sword is ridiculously OP. Buy this game. Give Nintendo all of your savings even though the game only costs $60. Just consider the rest to be a tip for making this masterpiece in the first place. Expand

I'd like to start off as saying I've been a die hard fan of the series ever since the first game came out. I have logged well over 300 hours on each playing it both as a party game and a serious fighting game. That's why it pains me to give this new entry such a low score.

Smash bros has always been a series that went above and beyond expectations. This game however is barely able to deliver enough to call itself a new game. It reuses so many resources from its predecessors. Never before has an entry reused so many old stages, character models or music. This alone would not necessarily be a bad thing if they used that saved time and money to introduce more new content than one would expect.

Unfortunately they did not. They introduce just barely as much new content as you would expect from a smash bros that was built from the ground up (not one that reuses most of its assets). There's about a dozen new character (including clones), 2 dozen new stages, 2 or 3 small new modes, some online improvements, etc. Nothing wow, no huge numbers anywhere. Pretty standard stuff.

Had the high amount of copy paste been the only thing to criticize from the game, I'd have given it a 8/10. The score of a solid game, just not one of a new or exciting one. That is not the case though as they removed so much content. They completely removed any semblance of the biggest single player mode of the game, adventure mode. That alone is like removing 20-30% of the games content. No more new monsters or familiar ones, no more huge expansive platforming stages with secrets, no more cutscenes, nothing. Just gone as if nothing. Not only that, they removed several characters. This includes possibly the most unique character of the game, the Ice Climbers. Another noteworthy one is the immensely popular Snake. These are huge losses.

Given all this, it's hard to say if the exchange of content is even the least bit beneficial at time. Some of the new modes are not very fun at all. The 8 player mode is far too chaotic for even an expert to be able to follow and is very hard to get going with actual people. The Smash Tour just tries to mix two very different genres and yields very poor results. The rest are decent additions but nothing to write home about.

The cherry on top that seals it's score is that they decided to sell a very cruel DLC for an already seemingly incomplete Smash Bros game. This DLC requires you to buy 2 copies of this game, one for each Nintendo platform, to gain access to a character that is not even new to the series. It is also pretty clear that they intend to sell even more dlc afterwards. For a game in which I cannot figure out where the extra effort from all these cut corners went, I cannot help but question their integrity when they chose to do this.

Some have called this Brawl 2.0, but that statement to me sounds very generous. Luckily enough for it, it is still a solid game. Just not a solid sequel. I do not recommend it for people that owned brawl, perhaps even melee. Still, thanks to the solid foundation of it's predecessors, Smash Bros Wii U is still a solid title for those new to the series.

The modes we get that replace the story mode as I stated previously are terrible. You get this stupid Board game like map you run around on and collect power ups to boost your stats while having occasional fights. It's poorly explained how it works in game, and even if you know how it works it's not fun to play. Smash run in the 3DS version should have been put in instead. Or maybe a STORY. You also have classic mode, Which is bloody awful. If you get all the way to the end of classic mode, your punished by having to fight Master hand, and some stupid shadow thing with ONLY 2 lives which is near impossible. Nobody with 2 lives can survive against Master hand and Crazy hand, The shadow dog, the shadow sword, a shadow clone of yourself, and a shadow ball that instantly KOs you if you don't kill it in a certain amount of time.
And then we have the Level editor, What the F$%^! How do you screw up something as simple as a level editor? First of all you have to use the Wii U gamepad, and you have to DRAW platforms, and on the gamepad its near impossible to draw a straight line. Now what do you get to use for the level editor? You have 5 choices of texture for the platforms, and 4 f$#%*@# object choices unless you go through classic mode a few hundred times ( Which sucks ) To unlock more.
The only things that redeem this games piss poor game modes is 8 player smash, Regular brawls, And fighting with people online, The controls are much better then the 3DS version, and its a much more competitve game.
This game deserves no more then a 7. Just because its HD and brings in some new content doesn't warrant a 10. All new games should bring in new content, and on a next gen system you should expect good graphics, But I guess that's just Metacritic on an average day.

First, I'll focus on the good. The HD graphics are very nice, and the FPS is surprisingly stable; even in 8-player matches. Hit effects are flashy and satisfying albeit intrusive at times. The music and sound effects are well done and fitting as usual for a Smash game. They've also added a ton of characters, though some just seem redundant/pointless (Dark Pit).

Now for the bad; the gameplay. This is where the game is like Brawl in a bad way. It seems Nintendo can't decide weather they want it to be a party game or a competitive game. Everything is so floaty and slow that it almost feels like I'm drunk. The input lag they implemented in Brawl has apparently become a staple, which is just godawful and basically ruins the game. 8-player matches aren't as awesome as they sound; it's utter chaos, and not in good way. At least they got rid of tripping. *shudder*

While the stages look pretty, most are just a chore to play on. The blast zones are way too large and only serve to exacerbate the floaty slowness. Stage gimmicks and traps are in full effect here, some even worse than Brawl if you can fathom that.

In the end, the game is just not that fun. I played it at a friend's for a few hours, and I doubt I'll ever play again. Sure, it's flashy and pretty and loaded with content, but lacks good gameplay; the most important feature of any game. I understand that it's a party game and not to be played competitively, but it falls short even in that category. Stick with the Mario racing/sports/party games. At least those are fun.

Through my extensive playing of the game, I have encountered minor graphic glitches with the game (that I am sure will be fixed through updates), and upon closely examining the Challenges board found in the Main Menu...I came to notice that several of the requirements to unlock things on the Challenges board can really only be done by someone who is an absolute expert with the game.
My last major qualm is the Stage Builder. So much more could've been done with the Builder, yet in some ways I feel that the selection of actual items to place on-stage is even more limited than Brawl. HOWEVER...I do love that our stages can finally be whatever shape we want it to be.

Only slightly better than the 3DS version in that the controls are actually bearable. Otherwise it's just more of the same; more tacked-on features that don't add anything new or screw up things that were perfectly fine in the first place. And yes, I'm still bitter about the Ice Climbers.

Blast zones are too big so it takes a LOT longer to kill opponents, ledge mechanic is very frustrating as you can't edge grab anyone so if somebody recovers like a noob it will look really awkward because I can't punish that. Nowhere near as much content as Brawl so this is a step backwards. Very disappointed...

The way I felt when I saw the Character Select screen for the first time, along with the badass new theme playing in the background, is indescribable. And at no point did the game give me a reason to rob me of that feeling.

This game gets a 3 for single player. This game gets boring so fast. Characters like Wolf and Snake are cut while characters like Game and Watch and Wario remain. There is no story mode and the online is terrible most of the time. It has less content than Brawl.

Yet another wii u game that fails in a beloved franchise. The single player modes are utter crap, the gamepad is a terrible controller for smash bros, and they added so many awful characters (dark pit shouldn't take up a character slot, and villager wtf?) and stages (except the skyloft and windy hill zone). Even if you are a smash bros fan I don't recommend this game.

If I would rate the game with the fighting-only in mind, then it would be a 10. It's the smash formula perfected, polished, made more enjoyable than ever.
HOWEVER it worries me when people give this game only perfect 10's...for me it's a solid 8, it's a great game but there are 3 points that are pretty annoying. First, the controls. I am used to the 3DS iteration and honestly I don't like

HOWEVER it worries me when people give this game only perfect 10's...for me it's a solid 8, it's a great game but there are 3 points that are pretty annoying. First, the controls. I am used to the 3DS iteration and honestly I don't like the way commands work on Wii U. Why change it? On 3DS you could change the default controls, but TELL ME WHY on the Wii U version you can't, but the workaround is: you have to register a "nickname" for the controls, then you have to manually select your name after you selected a character, if you wanna play with custom controls. This is really lame (especially some modes won't remember your last choice). Even more lame if you're the only one using your Wii U at home. I wish Nintendo will patch this! I also hate the fact that sometimes you are against an opponent and the hitbox is acting kinda strange; the hit is registered BEHIND the opponent and it misses. You have to face your opponent properly but the annoying thing is the way character moves. It's a common occurrence to miss items because you moved too far. It's like the analog stick is too sensible - sometimes it's just hard to get EXACTLY where you wanted. It can lead to some frustration in fights.
The second point is: the lack of "Adventure" mode made me speechless. As a lover of the "Subspace Emissary" mode (or whatever stupid name that was) back in the day I am left wanting more. The adventure mode on 3DS was OK, why leave it out? I absolutely hated the board game. It feels like Super Smash could have easily packed more stuff, or "better" stuff, as brawl did back in the day.
The third and last point is the presentation. I hate the layout, the menus, the interface feels messy and too chaotic IMHO I see it's a common complaint with a lot of people, not only me...
I would say Super Smash is a solid game that works but it's not a reason to add an extra point, I see a lot of people do, and it makes me sad this gen when you see that it becomes an extra point to have a working game out of the box. It's how every game should be. It's the way all Nintendo games always been. We should remove points when games don't work, not add points just because they work.
Now I must praise Nintendo for including demos of the original games behind most characters. There's also so many "collectibles" in the game (Sakurai-style) your head will spin. I must give an extra point because of it. Despite its flaws, you can tell the game was made with love for the characters and the retro games are a great addition.
Anyway...everything I wrote is my opinion, and my opinion ONLY, and because it's under 9 I feel I will get downvoted like crazy but I just wanted to speak out about this game's issues because there are quite a few IMHO. Still a solid & fun game. Recommended (if not a 'must have') if you own a Wii U! /Peace

First problem is the lack of story mode. Though some previous titles didn't have a story, the build up for SSB4's story was quite big, but got cancelled due to a leak (which I think is ridiculous). Upon completing everything, it would be nice to have something extra to play on, especially what the cutscenes and the story could of been.

Second problem is the amount of unlockable characters. There aren't much unlockable characters, because most are included in the starter game. I feel as though Nintendo should of made half of the starter characters locked through challenges for replay value to stay high.

But, in all due respects, this is a great game, and in my opinion is the saving grace of the Wii U.

    2. The biggest problem I have with the game is that the gameplay gets really old really fast. I played this thing for 2 or 3 hours, and got bored after that. I can only get some entertainment out of it once in a while because it gets really boring after a couple of hours. I mean, sure, it's fun finding the easter eggs, but other than that, it's not all that entertaining. But when it is fun, it's freaking awesome. Overall, it's a great game, and these are problems that I have with the series as a whole, so any of you who say that's why Melee is better, it's not, because it suffers from these problems too. So, is it worth buying the console so you can play it? Definitely not. Is it still fun? Absolutely.

While the game did have characters from many popular series(Lucas Is Back) and had groundbreaking fighting mechanics, the game seemed to suffer with variety. Often it felt too repetitive and never seemed to change for the better. While it did include other game play than fighting, that game play didn't particularly give me the hook.

Here are a few points of good/bad things:
+ 59 dififerent characters! (if you got the DLC characters)
    + Massive variety in stages
+ Huge amount of awesome music
    + Great visuals
+ 8 player smash, enough said.
+ The largest amount of collectibles in any smash games.
+ The ability to customize characters
+ The ability to make your own mii fighter!
    + Overall well balanced
+ Pretty good AI for CPU players.
    + The amiibos!
The negatives are pretty minor, but can be worth mentioning:
    - Weird menu design
    - Smash tour is just... bad....
    - Classic mode isn`t that good either....
    - Lack of options while playing online
    - Stage builder is quite lacking in things to build with.

The online mode, while offering many options, is often very laggy when playing with multiple players. I don't care if NintendoBlackCrisis forces me to like super smash bros. or bully people over having a different opinion on the series than the smash fandom. This game has the worst replay value of the entire series, along with possibly the worst item spawning I have ever seen in literally any video game. There was one time where I was playing on Classic on 9.0 and I was trying to attack my opponent while playing as Yoshi on Round 1 until suddenly I attacked midair while a bob-omb spawned on my foot and I got KO'd. Another example of terrible item spawning is one time in another battle, I was charging up my burning drop kick playing as one of my custom mii characters, and while I was charging it up a blast box spawned in front of me and once I finished charging up, I shot against it and got KO'd. The old modes in both versions aren't as fun either anymore. The stage creator has been downgraded in this game, and it has also heavily decreased the number of objects I can place on a custom stage. The new stage creator for the wii U version looks unfinished and rushed comparing to Brawl's stage creator. There is also no new adventure mode either, which was removed due to a pointless reason. The entire hunk of garbage is also way too gimmicky for a smash game. To me, Classic Mode is easily the worst part about the game because believe it or not, you have to spend gold to play classic mode. Another fun fact: if you quit classic mode and lose all of your progress recently made, your gold and customization parts get wasted. That's right, there is no property refunding in this so-called ''masterpiece''. You are forced to stick to your current gold amount and your current custom parts. In fact, when you have earned custom parts but then lose a match on 9.0, some of your custom parts get taken away. Even when it is rare, Sakurai doesn't care and counts everything that is unfair. I even completed Classic on 9.0 without losing a single life and you know what I got? NOTHING. No achievement completions, no prizes, nothing. So not only is one of the challenges in this game all a damn joke, but there are also more problems in this game than classic mode, which was just like wasting possibly 2 hours of my life trying to reach the most pointless achievement in this game. The rewards for the achievements you complete in this game are not enough. For example, I wasted like 20,000 gold trying to complete the achievement ''Complete Classic Mode on 9.0 without losing a single life'' and what do I get when I actually cleared that achievement? A useless protection badge that is barely any use for battle. The trophies and special moves in this game are also a waste of space on Classic Mode. Every time you clear something on Classic and you are hoping to get something good, sometimes, you get something you already have that is also a troll feature in the game that was never removed or fixed. The shield feature in this game is also useless as all hell because sometimes attacks pierce through your shield, so you have to hope that your shield doesn't tell you to buzz off and force damage on you or get you in a situation where you go dizzy.to me, that doesn't even make any sense. And also, why can't I play more than 4 players on Special Smash? The game doesn't even explain. Besides, comparing to ultimate, there would be no lag at all in an 8 player special smash, yet ultimate decided to limit the number of players on special smash too for aparently no reason whatsoever. By the way, it also recycles the code from the item spawning in Smash 4, meaning that all terrible item spawning is still present. The reason why I am not reviewing ultimate is because I don't want the SSB fandom to attack me and force me to like all of smash 4's terrible features. To be fair, however, Smash run and smash tour weren't as bad. But what does require explanation is why on earth can the wii U users play on 8 player but the 3ds users can't? To me, that is very hypocritical considering that Sakurai removed the ice climbers from Smash 4 due to it being unfair for the 3ds owners. I'd imagine that would have had no lag. And finally, some of the older stages that was once present in the smash bros. franchise have not been featured in Smash 4 due to no reasoning at all. If the developers of this game are seriously that bad at making games and they consider THIS to be their best work, then I'm worried about their other creations. Overall, this is a very unfortunate attempt to revive the smash franchise and continue to have its great recognition as Brawl v2 would have been a better title. I highly apologize if this review was not very good, but to me, this is possibly the worst game of the series. And it is also the 2nd most pointless video game that I have ever played in recorded video game history. 0/10. I do not recommend this rushed mess to long-time smash fans, especially when they are still hyped for future SG Expand

It eliminates depth in many ways:
New ledge mechanics get rid of reasons to recover high (or change recovery much at all), as it's practically a guaranteed sweet spot. Then there's the whole rock paper scissors edge stealing nonsense.
Guaranteed combos EVERYWHERE (hoo-hah? double jab?) vastly reduces the priority of having good combo DI, since it won't do anything.
Combos? Aside from the guaranteed ones, true combos are almost non-existent. You can air-dodge out of pretty much any non-guaranteed combo- even in hitstun! You don't need to plan your DI or contemplate what your opponent will do, no. Just air dodge. Or maybe not air dodge and try to trick them. How's that for complexity?
Movement options are scarce. Perfect pivot is all that comes to mind for movement tech. Even Ness's signature double jump cancel has been removed. Pika's quick attack cancel can't be used on flat surfaces (pretty much making it useless if you're playing online/in a tourney). Just two examples of specific characters having movement options reduced.
    DACUS has been completely removed.
I won't even get into Melee tech.

In short- Smash 64 is more in-depth than this.

    Pros:
    Music
    Graphics
small amounts of technical aspects exist
    No tripping
    Faster than Brawl
    8 Player Smash
Good online play options (glory, friends, etc)
    Massive assortment of controller options

    Cons:
The majority of technical aspects are gone
    Slow/Floaty

Obviously, I wasn't expecting another Melee, but to reduce it to what it is now in terms of depth is shameful.

The challenges in the game is harder than the ones on the 3DS game, like beating Classic 9.0 without losing a life, you use a Custom. There is the challenge without the Custom, but you are allowed to lose at least one stock.
Smash Tour can only be won by luck, same thing for the challenges of letting a Metroid to steal your stats and trying to get them back.
New characters such as Palutena, and Little Mac are fair enough. I was expecting some characters to have new moves. Dr. Mario uses the same moves that he uses in Melee, which itself is the same Mario's in the past game. Now Mario uses FLUDD, his Cyclone is a Down A. Dr. Mario uses a Doctor Cyclone, and his Jump Punch only hits once, which is fine because that makes him different than other "clones." Lucas is cut from Smash. But, the PK moves that he took from Kumatora is now added Ness' Customs. It would be nice if these protagonists can attack with their own moves or have more MOTHER characters.
There's a lot of stage music that are so great that you can't decide which is best for Smash.
Overall, this game is a no disappoint. You better get this game if want to settle it in Smash.

My favourite Smash bros yet. Great fun with good friends, and by yourself! It's great to see some new challengers like Pac Man and Bowser Junior join the party, even though little mac is rubbish!

The lack of a story mode similar to the subspace emissary is also a huge draw back for single player-ability, especially since it was only not included because Sakurai was apparently ignorant of the existence of Youtube. The removal of the characters, the Ice Climbers, as a result of Sakurai for some reason wanting to release a game that clearly had difficulties on the 3DS on that handheld is also a very poor decision; the game feels like it's lacking innovation and one has to wonder if it has to do with this decision. The new characters also are largely added only for visual appeal rather than celebrating Nintendo History, and there are more questionable inclusions(cloud, dark pit as a separate character, wii fit trainer, 20 different fire emblem characters) than there are good ones(little mac, ryu).

Graphics: It looks exactly like brawl....that's it. It's not necessarily a 'bad' thing but since this came out in a time when the Wii U was having troubles making itself look separate from the Wii making your flagship title resemble the previous incarnation's flagship title is a supremely stupid move; it doesn't really affect the game in of itself, but I personally don't like the relatively washed out colours (as opposed to Melee and 64) and plushie like appearance of anything that supposed to be soft. But for what it does it's fantastic, just wish they'd make it look stylistically different from Brawl to capitalize how much more refined this version could look.

Music: The music of the Smash Bros. series has always been hit or miss. Some tunes just don't rub you the right way while some get you pumped to smash Mario across the screen. The series has always done remixes of their titles' music, which would produce hit or miss songs (although the shear multitude of music in these games is surprising, so kudos for having any good ones really) but since this is the fourth entry(ies) in the series, we're seeing remixes of previous remixes, which is putting a damper on many of the songs in here. Songs that were good the way they were now sound like they were just trying to make it sound different at the cost of quality. You can only remix your remixes so many times before everything just sounds overdone and horribly annoying.

Overall: Although technically a "good" game, the title lacks inspiration, and is showing some great fatigue (Sakurai himself has noted how tired he is of making these games, but can't help but want to be the director of the games despite that, a rather perplexing situation indeed) leading to questionable and downright poor creative decisions (such as adding cloud only because he would increase sales) and despite what the high reviews tell you, it only is good in theory, rather than in practice, especially if you've played the whose series as extensively as I have. Still a recommended title, but don't be surprised if you find it lacking as compared to the previous ones. A series such as this has been about giving the fans what they've always wanted, but this entry does that least of all of them, and in multiple ways.

I realize I'm a year and a half late with this, but I can say this game was exactly what I was hoping for. I know there's a whole bunch of crazed Melee/Project M fans lurking around saying this game is just as bad as Brawl if not more so (Brawl wasn't a bad game, by the way), and I can agree it's not the big fast competitive thing that Melee and other EVO-certified fighting games are. I can also agree that I'm disappointed there's no story mode this time, clones are still a thing (though Melee was quite frankly worse for that), and Classic Mode while given an interesting new spin isn't quite what I'd hoped for.

But giving this game a low score because it's not as competitive as Melee? Sorry, but I honestly take offense to people that quite frankly have no idea what a 3 out of 10 game is really like. Trust me, I played Sonic Boom and Meme Run.

Nintendo packed as much content as they could into this. I can safely say that any one who puts 60$ into this game will have received there money's worth. Of course what good is content if the content itself is terrible, but super smash bros. isn't bad content. To shortly explain smash Bros., it's a 2D fighting game consisting of characters who are (with some exceptions) all from Nintendo brand games and they beat the crap out of each other. And it is fun. The control scheme is very simplistic and easy to understand, as you don't have to mess around with memorizing long combos. Despite its simplicity, smash can get very intense if the players are skilled enough, this has been shown by the large competitive community. Of course you don't have to be a competitive smasher in order to like this game, smash is still a great casual game if you wanna play with 1-7 of your friends. Yes I said 7 because this game features an 8-player smash mode. These matches are so hectic and at times I've found myself losing where my character is. It's still a lot of fun, but if you plan on playing this mode, I advise playing on a larger map. There are also tons of control options so chances are you can get enough of your friends together without having to shell out more cash than you need. The returning modes from brawl are the ones that have been staples in the series. Classic, All-star, Event matches, Home-run, target, and multi man smash but some of these modes have been changed. Classic now has a difficulty meter similar to the one in Kid Icarus uprising, where the more money you bet, the greater your rewards are. But if you die, you will lose some of your prizes. You also now can pick the players you fight rather than having it decided for you, which is nice. The final boss has also been changed, and let me just say this, be ready to throw your controller for how many times you will die to this boss. Oh and there is 2-player classic, which is always welcome. Event matches are similar to what they were, except now they have an additional challenge to them as well as having exclusive co-op ones. You also unlock the various event matches based on which ones you do. All star now has you fighting the characters in the order in which they were created chronologically, as in when they came out. They aren't exactly "hard" to beat, but because you have lots of enemies to fight, it's more or less an endurance test for the player. Target Blast has been changed from brawls. In this one, you now have to hit a bomb and blow up the targets angry birds style. I actually liked this mode more than the one in Brawl, though it isn't exactly a mode you'll be playing too much. Multi-man smash is very much the same, although you now have to fight the mii fighters. Speaking of which, mii fighters are now a thing as well as character customization. You get different movesets and can equip stat boosts, but it isn't exactly anything too deep. Still nice addition though. Home run contest is just as fun as it was back in brawl. In terms of new things to do, there is a lot. The new Crazy orders and Master orders are incredibly fun. Crazy orders specifically. If you are a gambling type, beware this mode. You do a challenge and you can keep doing more challenges until the time runs out or you die. You can cash in whenever you want or you can keep going and try to get more rewards. But if you die, you're going to lose a lot your rewards. Master orders is more so a set of challenges you can pay to do rather than like crazy orders, but it can still be fun. Trophy rush is a nice distraction and can be helpful to those trying to get all the trophies. The new smash tour mode is alright. It play's like this Mario party hybrid, where you roll dice and try to get as many fighters as possible. It ends in a final match where you are pitted against one another and the amount of fighters you have determines your stock. It is a little bit complicated, but there's still fun to be had in this mode. The new character rooster is also very impressive. We got plenty of returning characters but we also have tons of new characters, each with there own unique ways to play. Though I do miss Wolf. The online is also much better than on Brawl. Connection is smooth, and the option to play casual or hardcore gives players the ability to get some good competition to test themselves out. But really, what else is there to say, it's smash bros. Sure there isn't an adventure mode in this one, but the amount of other fun modes this game has made me forget about it. Plus do you really need a story in a fighting game. Pick this game up at full price. Don't have a Wii U? Might be time to consider it my friend. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U earns a 10/10, a must own.

Super fun! Takes everything from Brawl and makes it better! (Except for the story mode, obviously) The game is faster like Melee and looks beautiful. The animations are lovely and reaction/lag time is pretty good. Definitely a system seller! 9/10 only because of a lack of a story mode and reused voice clips from Brawl.

When viewed without comparison to other entries in the series, SSB WiiU is an amazing game. It offers tight controls, more balance than many other fighters, approachability yet depth, and hours of fun. It comes packed with content and should satisfy all who pick it up. When compared to previous versions, some will take issue with certain decisions, but the community is pretty happy with this one.

Being an old school smasher, I enjoyed playing the game with the Gamecube pad, but unfortunately, the adapter is in very short supply, so had to manage with the pro controller and the WiiU pad. These are not the only ways to play though, as you can pretty much use anything in your room to play! Wii remote, nunchuk, classic controller and 3DS can all be used to play on the WiiU version, which is great for people who can’t afford the extra pads.

I’m not going to spoil the unlockables, but there are so many characters and stages to unlock that you’ll have a fun time trying to collect everything including all those trophies and stickers! DLC is also planned for new characters, so you can look forward to new or veteran fighters in the games life span. There is also early access to Mewtwo to those who purchase both 3DS and WiiU versions of the game, a character I actively enjoyed playing with in the Gamecube version.

One thing I do miss from a previous game was the Subspace Emissary mode that has been replaced with Smash Tour in the WiiU. This is due to social media being too easily to access, it can spoil the nostalgia of a storyline if browsing a simple website. Smash Tour does stand tall in its place though, where it takes on the role of a mini Mario Party game, but yourself VS other Miis collect upgrades and fighters for the final battle to see who came out on top.

Nintendo have also given gamers something to take their minds off this though with the inclusion of 8 player smash mode, where the cap used to be 4 players or the slight painful rotation mode, you can now have up to 8 players playing simultaneously, all using their own controller from the many to choose from, without having to wait for someone to be smashed off stage to join in the fun!
