I don't really like this game a whole lot. It's a good game, but the issue is it does the same things Brawl and Melee do, but worse. There are removed fighters, no story mode and a lack of other features that just makes the game less enjoyable than the others in the series. Definately Smash Bro' weakest entry. Just play Brawl or Ultimate.

But the biggest issues for me come in two forms:
    1. The series hasn't made much of a step since Melee. At this point expect famililarity. 2. Online needs serious improvement as there are still a heap of

Stage Builder too, is rubbish. You literally have nothing to build with, unless you run through the awful classic run a few million times, and you can only build using the Wii Pad, Good concept, terrible in practice. There is no adventure mode, or subspace emissary, Because "people leaked footage of it" or so I'm told. Either way unacceptable.

The only thing worth your time in this game is the Multiplayer, AI battles, and 8 player smash. Nintendo gives me half a game, I give them half a score.

Maybe it was too hard or would have made the game a bit too complicated but whats the point in having this game on the wii u if it does not use the main difference from the wii and the wii u. I've never seen or heard of a company so determined to prevent their final product from being enjoyed by as many people as possible. They genuinely, honestly, cannot stand the idea of their game being played in any environment that isn't a spacious, white living-room full of people who don't know what to do with their hands.

Online play is very laggy. The roster is actually a downgrade from Brawl, something I thought I'd never see in the Smash Bros series. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I found myself just using the final destination mode on every stage because the new stages blow, ESPECIALLY the Pac-Man stage. The new character additions are meh. I felt they added more characters to the series that don't really need them since they aren't as popular. Not trying to speak for everyone, but every person I have talked to about this games roster said they would have preferred more characters from the Sonic series, the Donkey Kong series, the return of Lucas, the Metroid Series, or the Star-Fox series. The game modes are a disappointment. Most of them are just returns from its predecessors, but they aren't as fun. They ruined Classic Mode. I was so excited to go through it but now its just horrible. Why did they remove going through battles in one go? It isn't a "Classic" mode if they modified it so much. Also, no adventure mode. What were they thinking? Single player in Brawl only lasted for me because there was a story mode. Playing tons of pointless matches alone will only last for so long. Playing Smash with friends, however, is always a fun time. That's where every flaw is negligible. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're playing this with a friend it should be fine. In my case, though, multiplayer is fun but loses its flare in about 45 minutes to an hour before I start getting bored of the same thing over and over again. My friend who I normally play with can play for hours, so I guess that says something. A solid, polished game- undeserving of its god-like praise in my opinion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These games are supposed to be fun and be a crossover of the main cast of various videogame franchises. Well, to me, this game...AND Brawl fails to meet this. Now compared to the 3DS ver. this one IS better, but not by far. Brawl first introduced a story mode. But guess what? Sakurai decides to remove the story mode they've been working on for this game because 'people are watching it on YouTube' which is as vague as anyone can get.
Now In SSB-64 and Melee we had new characters that retain their popular voices, likeness, and design, and the returning characters experience the same. But someone not right in the head decides that Twilight Princess Link (Akira Sasanuma) is more notable and more recognizable in the Zelda franchise than OoT Link (Nobuyuki Hiyama). The fact that Hiyama didn't voice Link in that game is why people hated it, same went with Twilight Princess Ganondorf (who sounds like he has a cockroach in his throat while inhaling copious traces of helium). They bother to remove Link's Illusion Stab but character who don't need, let alone deserve it, have mash-attacks (like King Dedede, Palutena, Pit, Bowser Jr, Diddy Kong, etc). Not to mention since it's TP Link we are literally FORCED to use the Gale Boomerange which royally sucks. They downright give out too much transformation attacks as Final Smashes (which are mostly downright useless). They apparently had the gall to replace Marth's Shield Breaker with this pansy Thrust of the same name. Lucina is pointless, she literally has the EXACT moveset of Marth, NO DIFFERENCE, not even speed or DMGwise! Upon getting the game, unloicking characters doing events, hr contest and classic mode, there is NOTHING for you to do. Target Blast is a joke, it is really nothing but luck purely. And what were they on to think adding VILLAGER from Animal Crossing would make sense. His side smash is LITERALLY him dropping a bowling ball in front of himself. I can't even comprehend how he can even charge that attack! I'm also tired of the challenges forcing you to be someone that sucks. ie: to get this reward k.O a giant bowser with Tiny olimar in less than 40 seconds!) OLIMAR sucks. He has no reach and even his smash attacks do nothing against him. People are going crazy over this game and I think it's undeserved. This game would be far greater if it had this:
    NOBUYUKI HIYAMA Link
    TAKASHI NAGASAKO Ganondorf.
    NOTHING from Twilight Princess.
Roy and Pichu back (either as a character or assist).

Hell, people say this game added a ton of new modes. No they didn't all the new things you get is: Target Blast, Torphy Rush, Smash Run/Smash Tour (which is really stupid, they barely even explain how much of any of it works), 8-player smash, special orders, and stage builder. Just how miniscule these modes are don't even make much of them worth a single mode in countenance(I'd barely consider them as two modes in total). The Mii Fighters are demeaning. 'There are so many people I can't add so you can create them yourselves as a Mii fighter' says Sakurai. Right, right, So I'm sure I can give a Mii red, blue, pink, or even purple hair, right? Nope, the most you can get out of hair color from miis is blonde, brown, light brown, black, and auburn. The Gunner is a more of a Samus clone than anything. The Brawler is clearly Ryu from Street fighter. The swordfighter is the worst, ALL OF HIS ATTACKS are centered around being ninja-oriented, especially with him constantly having his sword being held in reverse grip most of the time. Why can't you create the moveset why can't you clone from an existing ACTUAL fighter? And to top it all off the Mii Swordfighter's Final Smash SUCKS. He raises his sword and shoots out a myriad of blade beams. But what's that? The Mii Brawlers gets a Dissidia-Omnislash Style final smash. You'd be lucky if Swordfighter's baldebeams even smash an opp. It's worthless. Not to mention. What's the point in creating a fighter if he has NO VOICE? Why can't you just select from a preset voice for custom characters or choose your own from the console memory/sd card?
Bottom line is Melee's easily better.

The game looks fantastic, plays fantastic, and the soundtrack (like usual) is awesome.Classic mode is pretty cool with different intensities and choosable routes. Stage builder is more customizable than ever and is easy to use, but it would be nice if you could do 8-player battles on them. Some of the new characters are awesome like Rosalina and Luma, Mega man, Pacman, etc. They balanced OP characters from brawl *cough* Meta Knight. And the new items are fun.
If you were used to the controls from its 3ds counterpart, the grab has changed and is now the ZR and ZL and shielding is R and L. This threw me off as the 3ds 's default grabbing was L and default shielding was R. I am aware you can change the controls under a name and select the name before playing, but with gamemodes like smash tour and events, I am forced to use the default controls, which I will always screw up using. That was one of many flaws this game hosts. The content feels sort of lacking, with no story or adventure mode to play through, instead you have many gamemodes that either are stupid and not needed or just boring. All-star mode remains unchanged from the 3ds version, aside from facing fighters in reverse-chronological order. 8-player mode was a welcome concept that allows more than 4 players to join in, but if you are playing with all 8 players it is too chaotic and the maps you are restricted to play on seem a little odd. Crazy orders are pretty fun, but master orders seem rather unnecessary and I feel like they were just put there as a content filler. Smash tour is pretty boring and very disorienting as so much is going on at once, and the stats and fighters on your team are extremely small and hard to read.
You are given way too many characters and stages already unlocked off the bat which are way easier to unlock compared to previous games, which takes a lot of the fun, challenge and replay value out of the game. There are too many retro stages (which aren't even organized/separated from new ones) and not enough new, creative stages. Cool characters like Ice Climbers, Snake, Lucas and Wolf were ripped from the roster in replacement for stupid clones like Dark Pit and Dr. Mario.
Easily the worst part of the game is the online. I don't even bother playing free-for-all matches as all it takes is one person with a bad connection to turn 2 minutes into 6 minutes of laggy hell and if you try to leave you are temporarily banned. It is beyond me why 'For Glory' free-for-all matches and team matches are timed. However 1-on-1 for glory matches are quite smooth and thankfully are stocked.

Let me reiterate by saying, this game is great, but far from perfect. I would rate it 7.5 out of ten but since that's not possible, for now, it is a 7/10.

My overall experience so far with the game has been of slight disappointment, about the same I felt with Brawl but for slightly different reasons. I'll list my biggest gripes to let you know what I find frustrating about the design of the game:

First and foremost - when you have three generations of a game that have taught you that the backmost left and right triggers are for shield, and the closer smaller trigger button(s) are for grabs, why would you go and change that for the wii u controller? And not only that, but this is the most ridiculous part of all - why would you make it so the only way you can change controls is to assign them to a "name", and then give you absolutely no way to choose a default name for your controller or login? That makes absolutely no sense, and is mind numbingly frustrating to deal with when you forgot to change your name in the bottom left before every match or game mode, and you go to execute a block, roll, or grab, and the buttons are reversed from what you've grown to learn for nearly a decade of a games existence. That's an automatic -2 from the score right there. No excuse for them to overlook this, you can't tell me not one person in that entire company could have thought this to be a bad game design decision.

My next issue is the removal of the adventure mode in favor of this smash tour mode. Smash tour mode simply put is just lackluster. It is too rng based and there isn't much skill to be had here, I guess they wanted to make a mario party type hybrid mode in the game? I'd be fine w/ it if they still included the adventure mode, which in my opinion was incredibly fun in melee/brawl. You can't even choose the difficulty level on the ai opponents for the board game mode, so clearly it was rushed out, the whole game seems like it was released a bit early to be honest. -1 for the exclusion of adventure mode and addition of rushed modes that don't really work that well.

There is also lag present in the game, which should just not be happening in this day and age for console games. You know exactly the hardware your game will be running on, if it is lagging as often and as badly as it does. -1 for this.

There are other minor qualms I have but the above are mainly why I have to detract from the score. The "good" has already been highlighted by enough reviewers already that I don't need to go over that, but I am mainly writing this review to give you a little more realistic view of what you are getting with this game, if you are irked by the type of things that irk me.

The modes we get that replace the story mode as I stated previously are terrible. You get this stupid Board game like map you run around on and collect power ups to boost your stats while having occasional fights. It's poorly explained how it works in game, and even if you know how it works it's not fun to play. Smash run in the 3DS version should have been put in instead. Or maybe a STORY. You also have classic mode, Which is bloody awful. If you get all the way to the end of classic mode, your punished by having to fight Master hand, and some stupid shadow thing with ONLY 2 lives which is near impossible. Nobody with 2 lives can survive against Master hand and Crazy hand, The shadow dog, the shadow sword, a shadow clone of yourself, and a shadow ball that instantly KOs you if you don't kill it in a certain amount of time.
And then we have the Level editor, What the F$%^! How do you screw up something as simple as a level editor? First of all you have to use the Wii U gamepad, and you have to DRAW platforms, and on the gamepad its near impossible to draw a straight line. Now what do you get to use for the level editor? You have 5 choices of texture for the platforms, and 4 f$#%*@# object choices unless you go through classic mode a few hundred times ( Which sucks ) To unlock more.
The only things that redeem this games piss poor game modes is 8 player smash, Regular brawls, And fighting with people online, The controls are much better then the 3DS version, and its a much more competitve game.
This game deserves no more then a 7. Just because its HD and brings in some new content doesn't warrant a 10. All new games should bring in new content, and on a next gen system you should expect good graphics, But I guess that's just Metacritic on an average day.

Through my extensive playing of the game, I have encountered minor graphic glitches with the game (that I am sure will be fixed through updates), and upon closely examining the Challenges board found in the Main Menu...I came to notice that several of the requirements to unlock things on the Challenges board can really only be done by someone who is an absolute expert with the game.
My last major qualm is the Stage Builder. So much more could've been done with the Builder, yet in some ways I feel that the selection of actual items to place on-stage is even more limited than Brawl. HOWEVER...I do love that our stages can finally be whatever shape we want it to be.

This is the most robust, fun and complete Smash Bros of all. And that is not a small feat. They've improved every part of the game, the amount of detail in each character is astonishing. The roster with almost 50 characters is the best of them and the stages are also good. Playing for fun and at the same time with such technical precision is only possible with the Smash Bros series.

    2. The biggest problem I have with the game is that the gameplay gets really old really fast. I played this thing for 2 or 3 hours, and got bored after that. I can only get some entertainment out of it once in a while because it gets really boring after a couple of hours. I mean, sure, it's fun finding the easter eggs, but other than that, it's not all that entertaining. But when it is fun, it's freaking awesome. Overall, it's a great game, and these are problems that I have with the series as a whole, so any of you who say that's why Melee is better, it's not, because it suffers from these problems too. So, is it worth buying the console so you can play it? Definitely not. Is it still fun? Absolutely.

While the game did have characters from many popular series(Lucas Is Back) and had groundbreaking fighting mechanics, the game seemed to suffer with variety. Often it felt too repetitive and never seemed to change for the better. While it did include other game play than fighting, that game play didn't particularly give me the hook.

New ledge mechanics get rid of reasons to recover high (or change recovery much at all), as it's practically a guaranteed sweet spot. Then there's the whole rock paper scissors edge stealing nonsense.
Guaranteed combos EVERYWHERE (hoo-hah? double jab?) vastly reduces the priority of having good combo DI, since it won't do anything.
Combos? Aside from the guaranteed ones, true combos are almost non-existent. You can air-dodge out of pretty much any non-guaranteed combo- even in hitstun! You don't need to plan your DI or contemplate what your opponent will do, no. Just air dodge. Or maybe not air dodge and try to trick them. How's that for complexity?
Movement options are scarce. Perfect pivot is all that comes to mind for movement tech. Even Ness's signature double jump cancel has been removed. Pika's quick attack cancel can't be used on flat surfaces (pretty much making it useless if you're playing online/in a tourney). Just two examples of specific characters having movement options reduced.
    DACUS has been completely removed.
I won't even get into Melee tech.

In short- Smash 64 is more in-depth than this.

    Pros:
    Music
    Graphics
small amounts of technical aspects exist
    No tripping
    Faster than Brawl
    8 Player Smash
Good online play options (glory, friends, etc)
    Massive assortment of controller options

    Cons:
The majority of technical aspects are gone
    Slow/Floaty

Obviously, I wasn't expecting another Melee, but to reduce it to what it is now in terms of depth is shameful.

The lack of a story mode similar to the subspace emissary is also a huge draw back for single player-ability, especially since it was only not included because Sakurai was apparently ignorant of the existence of Youtube. The removal of the characters, the Ice Climbers, as a result of Sakurai for some reason wanting to release a game that clearly had difficulties on the 3DS on that handheld is also a very poor decision; the game feels like it's lacking innovation and one has to wonder if it has to do with this decision. The new characters also are largely added only for visual appeal rather than celebrating Nintendo History, and there are more questionable inclusions(cloud, dark pit as a separate character, wii fit trainer, 20 different fire emblem characters) than there are good ones(little mac, ryu).

Graphics: It looks exactly like brawl....that's it. It's not necessarily a 'bad' thing but since this came out in a time when the Wii U was having troubles making itself look separate from the Wii making your flagship title resemble the previous incarnation's flagship title is a supremely stupid move; it doesn't really affect the game in of itself, but I personally don't like the relatively washed out colours (as opposed to Melee and 64) and plushie like appearance of anything that supposed to be soft. But for what it does it's fantastic, just wish they'd make it look stylistically different from Brawl to capitalize how much more refined this version could look.

Music: The music of the Smash Bros. series has always been hit or miss. Some tunes just don't rub you the right way while some get you pumped to smash Mario across the screen. The series has always done remixes of their titles' music, which would produce hit or miss songs (although the shear multitude of music in these games is surprising, so kudos for having any good ones really) but since this is the fourth entry(ies) in the series, we're seeing remixes of previous remixes, which is putting a damper on many of the songs in here. Songs that were good the way they were now sound like they were just trying to make it sound different at the cost of quality. You can only remix your remixes so many times before everything just sounds overdone and horribly annoying.

Overall: Although technically a "good" game, the title lacks inspiration, and is showing some great fatigue (Sakurai himself has noted how tired he is of making these games, but can't help but want to be the director of the games despite that, a rather perplexing situation indeed) leading to questionable and downright poor creative decisions (such as adding cloud only because he would increase sales) and despite what the high reviews tell you, it only is good in theory, rather than in practice, especially if you've played the whose series as extensively as I have. Still a recommended title, but don't be surprised if you find it lacking as compared to the previous ones. A series such as this has been about giving the fans what they've always wanted, but this entry does that least of all of them, and in multiple ways.

You know, I can honestly say that this game blew me away. It's no Melee, but it IS a really good game.

But there are reasons why this game is not my favorite. For one, those god damned CLONES. Seriously. The new characters they do add are great and have epic ideas, but perhaps a third of them just copy another already made character. Such as Lucina. God... For two, no adventure mode.

For two, no adventure mode. What had started to become a staple in the Smash Bros. Series is now eerily absent. The adventure modes in Melee and Brawl (ESPECIALLY Brawl) were near perfect, but the disappearance of it in Smash 4 is depressing.

But besides those two facts, the game is great. Like I said, it's no Melee, but it'll do and I'll certainly be playing it for a long time.

Also, the game only has 8 unlockable characters while it's predecessor has 16. Brawl feels more like a challenge than 4. Another complaint, Sonic's new voice is way too deep and Fox's new voice is way too nasal compared to their Brawl iterations. And unfornately, Wolf , Ice Climbers and Snake still have not returned from Brawl yet. Also one of my Smash 4 picks Shadow the Hedgehog got into the games as an assist trophy. Some of my favorite stages like Mushroomy Kingdom and Green Hill Zone return in the 3DS version. Also, the textures even though there are HD, the cartoonish art style makes them look worse than Brawl. Brawl's textures made the Wii look better and more competitive than it actually is. Overall, I just feel like this sequel is lacking a lot that Brawl had and it definitely does not convince me to buy a Wii U. Other than that, a least the sound track's good. Expand

However, the Wii U version's Smash Tour mode is likely the worst mode in the series, as it is frustrating and overly complex compared to the rest of the game.

Other than that, the 3DS and Wii U versions have very little difference from each other. Their choices for new characters was, in general, a bit questionable at times. The stages were sometimes poorly designed and they didn't seem to understand the desires of competitive or casual players, as almost every stage is extremely over-complicated, with gimmicks and movement directly affecting the gameplay, whereas the "Omega" version that is offered overly simplifies the stages into generic, flat planes. This problem is especially true of the Wii U version, where they seemed determined to utilize the full capacity of the system's engine and instead ended up making every default stage unnecessarily chaotic.
The Fire Emblem and especially Kid Icarus franchises are over-represented to the arguable detriment of other franchises. This is especially true of the Wii U version, where the developers seemed to default to using Kid Icarus for everything.

Overall, an alright installment, but doesn't exactly live up to the series before it.

I'm not saying that Nintendo should add a story mode because that would be reviewing this game unfairly. This game is well built and extremally fun to play professionally.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is definitely a fun game. It builds on some of the stuff in the previous games that worked, but also failed a bit to fix the broken stuff.

Many of the single player modes are great. Classic Mode got a fun makeover, and All-Star Mode is always a blast. But modes such as Target Blast and the Event Matches haven't recovered from the horrible unmemorable mangling Brawl gave them. In fact, Target Smash here is even worse. Now in Brawl, sure it was lacking the unique stage for each fighter, but in Smash for Wii U, it's lacking stages at all. The once fun time trial mini-game has now been reduced to nothing more than a cheap angry birds knockoff. With a Story Mode also being left out for completely stupid reasons along with all of these other flaws, the single player mode feels very lackluster and lazy.

The customization modes are fine for what they are. The moveset and property editing options are fun and easy to use as you can change the abilities of a fighter or even their stats with special gear. The painting mode is also fun for Miiverse posts, but the Stage Builder is still severely lacking. While have the power to draw your map any way you like it instead of being restricted to a grid, there's so little in terms of variety. There's lava, rocket barrels, springs, and moving platforms. But that's about it. There's no Ferris Wheel, falling platforms, ice blocks, or any stage decorations like the one found in Brawl's editor. It also feels lazy.

Now when it comes to the content, this game really shines. The largest roster in Smash Bros. history with tons of overpriced DLC, the massive amount of stages, and all the different items to collect and unlock. The starting roster is great enough as it is, and DLC is optional so there's no REAL reason I should complain about it. But if you want all of the characters and stages, you'll have to scrape over an extra $43 just for 7 characters and 5 stages. That's not even including other DLC items like the Mii costumes. You need to repay almost the entire price of a brand new copy just to add an extra bundle of content smaller than the Nintendo 64's entry in the series. While the DLC characters and stages are fun to use, this is still an example of how DLC can be done poorly.

As for the gameplay, it's definitely fun. You won't get bored at all in multi-player mode. But there's no balance, the hit boxes are quite sloppy for a fighting game, and despite being a very well-produced product, it's not safe from plenty of bugs and glitches. It doesn't have that much value in terms of competitive fighting games, but as a party game in general, Super Smash Bros. is the best you can get. The items are all fun, the final smashes are creative. The assist trophies keep you on your toes, and there's never a dull moment.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is a fantastic game by itself, but when stacked up against the rest of the entries in the series, it fails to stand out. It's just another title. It may have more content, but the lackluster single player, absence of story mode, average customization especially with the Stage Builder which is arguably worse than Brawl's, some parts of this game feel soulless and lazy. It's definitely a must buy if you own a Wii U, but it's no ground-breaking masterpiece either.
