Wow, I expect better from Nintendo. Smash Brothers for the Wii U is a mediocre game. It has no story like Brawl, and the modes that it has instead are terrible. The modes we get that replace the story mode as I stated previously are terrible. You get this stupid Board game like map you run around on and collect power ups to boost your stats while having occasional fights. It's poorly explained how it works in game, and even if you know how it works it's not fun to play. Smash run in the 3DS version should have been put in instead. Or maybe a STORY. You also have classic mode, Which is bloody awful. If you get all the way to the end of classic mode, your punished by having to fight Master hand, and some stupid shadow thing with ONLY 2 lives which is near impossible. Nobody with 2 lives can survive against Master hand and Crazy hand, The shadow dog, the shadow sword, a shadow clone of yourself, and a shadow ball that instantly KOs you if you don't kill it in a certain amount of time.
And then we have the Level editor, What the F$%^! How do you screw up something as simple as a level editor? First of all you have to use the Wii U gamepad, and you have to DRAW platforms, and on the gamepad its near impossible to draw a straight line. Now what do you get to use for the level editor? You have 5 choices of texture for the platforms, and 4 f$#%*@# object choices unless you go through classic mode a few hundred times ( Which sucks ) To unlock more.
The only things that redeem this games piss poor game modes is 8 player smash, Regular brawls, And fighting with people online, The controls are much better then the 3DS version, and its a much more competitve game.
This game deserves no more then a 7. Just because its HD and brings in some new content doesn't warrant a 10. All new games should bring in new content, and on a next gen system you should expect good graphics, But I guess that's just Metacritic on an average day.

But I bought this game on the Wii U... Am I the only one who thinks they should actually use the wii u gamepad in a wii u game? they could have customized even just a campaign or some solo or online play or even a mode of play where the gamepad is against the other players... Maybe it was too hard or would have made the game a bit too complicated but whats the point in having this game on the wii u if it does not use the main difference from the wii and the wii u. Being the touch screen gamepad.
Honestly I feel cheated in buying it... But still a great wii game. Not wii u game

It's pretty obvious but I'm going to say it: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is both better than the 3DS version and it is the best installment in the series to date!

The character roster is the best ever. The lack of the Ice Climbers, Lucas, and Wolf is a bit weird (DLC, maybe?) but all the others, including the newcomers are great. My favorite newcomers are Duck Hunt, Bowser Jr., Mega Man

The character roster is the best ever. The lack of the Ice Climbers, Lucas, and Wolf is a bit weird (DLC, maybe?) but all the others, including the newcomers are great. My favorite newcomers are Duck Hunt, Bowser Jr., Mega Man (Capcom), and Pac-Man (Namco Bandai). With new characters comes new Final Smashes and the game doesn't disappoint here either. All the Final Smashes are great despite some of them being complete clones: i.e. Toon Link and Link, Sheik and Zelda.

The stages are also a highlight with Mushroom Kingdom U, Skyloft, Orbital Gate Assault, Kalos Pokemon League, and Wuhu Island being the strongest ones. Some of the retro stages are odd choices such as Onett (why couldn't Magicant be here?) and Port Town Aero Dive (why couldn't Mute City be here?) but this is hardly a problem.

Classic and All-Star are the best they've ever been (even if All-Star Mode is better on the 3DS version) and I'm probably one of the few who believe the board game-like Smash Tour is better than Smash Run. It seems a bit more skill based than Smash Run. You have to adapt to crazy environments in this mode: explosives falling around you, Boss Galagas trying to carry you away, and Home-Run Bats hitting you everywhere!

The Event Match mode is a bit changed up here. There are various paths to choose from and there are some pretty difficult challenges to complete in these events. Speaking of challenges, they're back and are harder than ever! Thankfully, they're much more rewarding. Special Orders is a new mode in the game. They are a series of tickets that give you astounding prizes. In Crazy Orders, Crazy Hand must be fought at the end.

Trophies return as collectibles and they're as addictive to collect as ever. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who wishes he had time to read every single trophy description and admire Nintendo's history. Online isn't as laggy as it was in the 3DS version (in my experiences, at least) so that's a plus. I still wish there was something that matched you up to someone your skill level though.

Overall, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is an amazing experience and one of the best Wii U games to date! It's definitely a must-buy and you won't regret it!

Some pretty fun extra modes like classic, all star, multi-man brawl. Being able to make your miis into fighters, (more awesome than it sounds.) Custom flipping movesets! (YES!) So. Much. Music! And damm good music too! I love the new classic mode boss, (not spoiling what it is...) For once I actually enjoy playing every character! This game is great to play alone, and amazing to play with friends. If you have a Wii U, get this game! Just, get it! And if you don't have a Wii U, then get one! Aside from that, the combat here is top notch. It varies from others Smashes in that there is a pretty well-defined combo system this time around, as well as a way for you to bounce back when hitting a wall/floor/ceiling.

The new modes are a mixed bag. 8 man Smash is a warm welcome, but the Smash Tour game is... inferior to many other modes that have been in the series before. Okay, really, I hate the Smash Tour.

Other than that, the graphics are good, the animations are fluid and solid, and playing it on the GamePad feels quite right.

With a robust character roster, new, varied stages, the ability to play with up to eight players, and stunning HD graphics, this iteration of Super Smash Bros is a brand new experience. More than that, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the best entry yet in the acclaimed mascot fighting franchise.

Super Smash Bros prides itself on gameplay. Gameplay that is accessible for new comers, but complex enough to please hardcore players. Changes like the new edge grabbing mechanic, and an increased speed from brawl give the game a unique feel, but veteran players will be instantly familiar with the combat. The saying "If it isn't broke don't fix it" certainly applies, as it is still a blast landing a smash attack on your opponent and sending them flying. The most significant change to the gameplay is the inclusion of eight player smash. This brings the frantic brawler to a new level of chaotic joy. Even with eight players fighting it out on specially designed large stages, Smash's signature satisfying gameplay remains intact and well, if not a little more hectic.

Of course it wouldn't be a new Super Smash Bros without new characters, something the Wii U version is not lacking in. New fighters like Little Mac,Rosalina and Luma, Villager, and Megaman all offer unique move sets and gameplay styles, allowing for varied gameplay when using different brawlers. The combination of new and retro HD stages also come in many different varieties suited for the kind of smash you want to play. Want an intense one on one batte? Battlefield and Final Destination it is. Looking for a huge stage to try out eight player smash? Check out The Great Cave Offensive. In the mood for channelling your inner Luke Skywalker? Battle it out on the Star Wars...*Hmm*..."Star Fox" themed stage Orbital Gate Assault. I was slightly disappointed by lack of retro stages, with only a select few levels returning from previous games, but quickly got over it after checking out all the the new stage designs.

The meat and potatoes of Smash for Wii U is the extremely fun gameplay concept, and the characters and stages that are built around it. But to make the game a well rounded meal, you need interesting, varied game types to give the player a full experience. For the most part, the game delivers. Mini games like Mulit-Man Smash, Target Blast, and Home run contest use the Smash Bros. mechanics to create fun diversions, while other modes like All-Star, Special Orders, and Classic provide exciting, tense, smash battles that are enjoyable single player or with a co-op buddy. Event mode is the closest analogue to a campaign, giving the player unique scenarios and objectives to complete with comical story descriptions for each event that add to the fun; however, I was disappointed at the lack of a full story mode. Classic was my personal favorite mode. Defeating different groups of enemies and eventually facing off against Master and Crazy Hand never got tiresome, greatly thanks to a decimal based difficulty slider. Seeing my improvement as I moved up in difficulty was a satisfying progression system that didn't rely on leveling up or upgrading your gear, which is a huge accomplishment. The only mode where the game stumbles is Smash Tour. The board game like mode is confusing and boring, as you spend more time moving around the board than battling it out with other players. If anything, the mode makes you yearn to return to the excellent base of the game.

While playing all the modes in Smash, you are constantly unlocking trophies, music records, and custom moves that you can equip to your fighters. The music and trophies can be viewed in the vault, a dumping ground for all the Nintendo fan service in the game. Essentially a virtual museum, the vault allows you to take a tour through Nintendo's history, listening to beautiful medleys, checking out well designed trophies, and even playing demos of some retro classics. Any collector will have plenty of reasons to come back to smash to unlock all these Nintendo goodies.

When it works, online is a great way to experience multiplayer, but large amounts of lag often caused this experience to break. This may be a problem of my connection, as others report the online to run smoothly. But based on my experience, I can't say online as a viable option to play Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros is inherently great because of its exceptional gameplay. And with an array of fun single player and multiplayer game modes, hundreds of unlockables, and unparalleled fan service, and despite its messy board game mode and online hitches, Super Smash Bros for Wii U is truly something special.

The Roster to pick from is sizable and has a few characters you wouldn't expect, But by the time I had them all unlocked I still felt like it needed more. With the separation of Characters like Zelda/Sheik Or Samus/Zero Suit Samus it has filled out the roster a bit more then usual.

Literally the best console game ever created. I can't say it's THE best game ever created, because Sakurai's other flawless masterpiece, Kid Icarus: Uprising, takes the cake. Lets start off by rebutting any complaints.
-Are people really complaining about the name? [facepalms intensify]

-The clones. Anyone who hates these are "children" who "cannot be helped" -Masahiro Sakurai. He explained that clones were once alts, but added as additional characters, with little effort, so we could have extra characters. How could anyone be salty about them? It's not like they took the slot of another character. linkamo, for example, is a helpless child. he stated that " They’ve taken away a few of the better characters (like Snake and Ice Climbers) and replaced them with 14 new characters. Except, most of those characters are minor revisions to other characters. (Seriously… “Dark Pit” couldn’t have just been a different skin of “Pit?”)" MOST of the newcomers are minor revisions? Since when is 2/14 most? What an idiot. He also thinks Snake and IC's were replaced, when, in reality, the IC's were cut for technical reasons, and Snake was removed because Konami has been a jerk to Nintendo.

-Adventure mode/replay value. "Adventure" mode is the same thing every time you play through it in Melee and Brawl. Smash4's big mode is Smash Tour, which was designed so the same events are rarely produced. So which has more replay value? A mode that is the same every time, or a mode that is never the same? The answer is obvious. Since adventure had to be cleared as everyone in Melee, it got super repetetive, just as Classic (to a lesser degree) and All-Star do. The community also hated Brawl's SSE Great Maze, so I really don't see why people wanted the story mode to return (i personally liked it, but that's just me, and a completely new mode prevents this game from feeling like Brawl 2.0)

-Brawl 2.0: This game added more to its predecessor than Brawl did, and people are calling it Brawl 2.0, but not calling Brawl Melee 2.0. What. The. Hell? Special Orders, Conquest, Smash Tour, Custom Fighters, Trophy Rush, Photo Studio, Paint, the list goes on. Brawl only added Tourney and Online mode basically. Yes, the pace is closer to Brawls, it is is undoubtedly faster. Even so, they added things like For Glory and Omega forms to appease those who don't play smash the way it was intended. (Sakurai did state that Smash was supposed to be chaotic and fun). This game is actually closer to melee in one aspect: the amount of clones (#REKT)

-Customization. People say this is a dumb mode. K. Don't use it if you don't want. However, these make Classic mode and Hard Events so much easier. Seriously. I have a Donkey Kong with Lifesteal and Auto-healing, and he is a tank. Custom specials also make clones feel unique.

-Stages: There are a lot less new ones than Brawl, but if you add he new stages from Smash 3DS, we're golden. Even so, almost all of the new stages are amazing and unique. This is most likely because of the Wii U's advanced hardware being able to make more dynamic stages. You can't look me in the eye and say Mario Circuit 8 isn't an outstanding stage.

-8 Player Smash: It's fun with friends, but if you give this game a bad score because of an optional mode, you probably dont have any. (#REKT)

-Not many unlockables: Tell me again how having most of the content from the start is a bad thing? Unlocking was always a drab to me. Just gimme my stages and character and do it quick. Most of us already unlocked everything in the 3DS version too, so doing it all AGAIN would be tedious. If you want motivation to try new things, there's still the Challenges and Events. Speaking of which, the Events are notably better than Melee's and Brawl's, and you get rewards for completing them. They're also non-linear.

-Blast Zones too high: I'm guessing that, if this is a problem, you're missing a few chromosomes. There's something called "damage ratio" in the game that you can adjust.

-Too many fire emblem characters: Eh. I can't believe people want Roy to return as DLC.

-Online lag: I rarely play online, so any issues with it are not issues to me. Invite some friends over. Oh wait. I forgot that people who give this game a low score for dumb reasons have no friends.

-Amiibo functionality: Personally, I found the amiibos to level up too fast. You can get one to level 50 with ease. The process is still enjoyable. If you think otherwise, no one's forcing you to buy an amiibo figure.

-Classic Mode: Its better. You pick who you want to fight and which kind of rewards to recieve.
    I'm out of characters.

Let's not forget this game's soundtrack, which is undoubtedly the best of any game, the stunning HD visuals, the fan requested newcomers who mostly have unique mechanics. Special orders are great. Master is a great way to earn some quick coins, and Crazy is the only reliable way to get CDs. You also get a ton of rewards at the end of Crazy Orders and Smash Tour

Now, to start off, I must say that for players who take this game very seriously or really pay attention to those tiers from previous games, you may dislike this game. With a new games comes a new form of re-balancing so Meta Knight is no longer the god he used to be, although considering the unfairness of him that is a good thing. Anyways, on to an overview of the parts of this game.

Story: This game does not have a story mode, so for fans of the Subspace Emissary you will be disappointed. However, the classic mode is still enjoyable with the ability to choose battles and be able to play with a friend. The addition of a new form to the Master Core fight also makes the mode more challenging.

Graphics: For those of you who care, this game looks incredible, even on an old 360p tv like mine. The characters move very fluidly and the models have the right mixture of cartoon-like and realistic. If the graphics don't seem that great on your tv, simply look at the gamepad, and you will see what I mean.

Music: The music in this game is amazing! Although many classic songs do return from previous iterations, the soundtrack truly stands out in the new remixes. From the spanish themed Gerudo Valley, to the rocking Mega Man Medley the music can make brawls all the more epic!

Voice: Seeing as how this is a fighting game which doesn't focus on the voices, this segment is primarily nitpicky. For many characters, the voices remain similar from the old games, with a few exceptions. The one major offender is Fox. To describe it simply, it sounds as if the new actor had a horrible cold when he came in to provide the voice. As for the new characters, many of them have the actors reprise the role so it is familiar and works well.

Gameplay: The one major thing that (hopefully) you readers care about. The easiest way to summarize this portion is with one question: is this game fun? The answer, is a mighty YES! With a huge cast of characters there is a huge variety of ways to play. From the heavy hitting Little Mac, to the more tactical Robin, there are many playstyles to try. Another major improvement is the ability to change the frequency of Item Drops depending on if you want them to be plentiful or rare. Another improvement for those players who hate the hazards of stages is the addition of Omega forms. This is available for all stages and transforms them into a Final Destination style layout. If normal brawls aren't your thing, you can try out the chaotic 8 man brawls or some the more bizarre returning modes like Coin or Special brawls. Familiar stadium modes also return such as Multi Man Brawl, Home Run Contest and All Star Mode, once again improved with the addition of co-op. Unfortunately for fans of Target Smash, it has been removed. However, it has been replaced with a new Home Run Contest/Angry Birds mode called Target Blast. Simply put, you have 10 seconds to damage a bomb as much as you can and send it flying towards a large collection of targets with the goal being to destroy as much of it as you can. For fans of the 3DS editions Smash Run, it also has unfortunately been removed, it has been replaced instead with a Mario Party style mode called Smash Tour. This mode has players moving around a board collection fighters and stat boosts for one major final brawl. Events have also made a miraculous return with branching pathways instead of a chronological order. Finally, the online multiplayer works very well, for me at least, however I am not considering this a factor as I know not everyone has the best internet connection. Apologies, for skipping over Master and Crazy orders, but I am about to run out of characters.

    My Verdict: 10/10
A fantastic fighting game that should not be skipped for anyone owning a Wii U.

The speed impresses me a lot, since the game also is one of the prettiest looking games I have played, as the stages are down-right beautiful, and even with high quality graphics, the framerate is almost perfect, with nearly zero drops experienced so far.

The music is also amazing, as you get to choose what music you prefer for the stages. The stage selection this time is the best ever, if only 75m was cut, it would have been nearly perfect. The modes are also fun, with great online to boot.

If I had to find flaws I see the rolling mechanic as being a bit too powerful at the moment and I would have hoped that we got another Subspace Emisary, since Smash Tour is not as interesting.

Overall, get yourselves 4 great Smash Bros. controllers (Gamecube/Wii U Pro recommended) and duke it out with the best game of 2014 and quite possibly one of the best games of the next gen.

Well it's a smash bros game so it is bound to be good, but is it really that good?

My overall experience so far with the game has been of slight disappointment, about the same I felt with Brawl but for slightly different reasons. I'll list my biggest gripes to let you know what I find frustrating about the design of the game:

First and foremost - when you have three generations of a game that have taught you that the backmost left and right triggers are for shield, and the closer smaller trigger button(s) are for grabs, why would you go and change that for the wii u controller? And not only that, but this is the most ridiculous part of all - why would you make it so the only way you can change controls is to assign them to a "name", and then give you absolutely no way to choose a default name for your controller or login? That makes absolutely no sense, and is mind numbingly frustrating to deal with when you forgot to change your name in the bottom left before every match or game mode, and you go to execute a block, roll, or grab, and the buttons are reversed from what you've grown to learn for nearly a decade of a games existence. That's an automatic -2 from the score right there. No excuse for them to overlook this, you can't tell me not one person in that entire company could have thought this to be a bad game design decision.

My next issue is the removal of the adventure mode in favor of this smash tour mode. Smash tour mode simply put is just lackluster. It is too rng based and there isn't much skill to be had here, I guess they wanted to make a mario party type hybrid mode in the game? I'd be fine w/ it if they still included the adventure mode, which in my opinion was incredibly fun in melee/brawl. You can't even choose the difficulty level on the ai opponents for the board game mode, so clearly it was rushed out, the whole game seems like it was released a bit early to be honest. -1 for the exclusion of adventure mode and addition of rushed modes that don't really work that well.

There is also lag present in the game, which should just not be happening in this day and age for console games. You know exactly the hardware your game will be running on, if it is lagging as often and as badly as it does. -1 for this.

There are other minor qualms I have but the above are mainly why I have to detract from the score. The "good" has already been highlighted by enough reviewers already that I don't need to go over that, but I am mainly writing this review to give you a little more realistic view of what you are getting with this game, if you are irked by the type of things that irk me.

Visually Super Smash Bros. Wii U looks beautiful. At 60fps and 1080p the new game holds up really well. You can still pick from a diverse list of characters and some brilliantly designed stages. As for gameplay controls are crisp and have found a middle ground between the high paced action of Super Smash Bros. Melee and the more party oriented Super Smash Bros. Brawl. One of the newest features that stands out the most though is 8 player smash. Not only does 8 player smash work really well, its a whole lot of fun. The addition of stages specifically designed for 4+ smash work well and don’t break the experience in any way. Stages like The Great Cave Offensive give you enough room to duke it out, fight for the Smash Ball, and keep the match flowing.

Some popular modes have also made an appearance. Event mode is back with new themed challenges that make the game more entertaining with unique matches. A new mode called Smash Tour also makes an appearance, and plays out like a Mario Party game on a board where you can go around collecting power-ups and characters to be used in a final battle. The online mode is also a great deal of fun. Smash Bros. Wii U has fixed a lot of problems that the online mode for Brawl had. This new online mode is quick and simple, and gets you into the action right away.

Pound for pound Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is one of the best games released in 2014. The game is whole lot of fun for any player, young or old. And with the addition of a few friends the game becomes a truly enjoyable experience.

There is your basic Smash, Classic Mode, All Star Mode, Stadium, Vault, and Events like always, but this game also adds Smash Tour, 8 Player Smash, and Special Orders! These modes are fun, and rewarding, if a little uninspired. The drawback in this game is that there is no way to win Trophies, Cd's, Special Moves, and Costumes in standard Smash, and it forces you to grind in other modes that you might not like to play in. But that is just the extra stuff. What you really play Smash for is just the regular battles. The roster is huge, and my main switches constantly, because you get better and discover hidden character techniques. Ive changed from Ike to Ganon to Zero Suit Samus to Link to Sheik and have settled on Marth. Each character is so fun to figure out how to use well, that the other problems with this game are meaningless. Its unfair to expect everything perfect in this game, because even if a tenth of it is no good, it is ten times the size of other games, that its such a pointless and minute problem. Finally, I almost forgot to mention Online. It is flawless for the game, but it suffers from the online interactions that the system has, like not being able to read or even be notified when your friend sends you a message, and heck, you have to load an app just to see if your friend is online. But for just playing matches with strangers, it is flawless, assuming you have a good/strong internet connection. This is simply the most refined smash bros to date. Expand

The gameplay and controls are really easy to pick up and learn, if you have played Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii or the 3DS version of this game, you will master the Wii U version without stress.
The amount of fighters and stages has increased diversely from Brawl and even has more characters than the 3DS version. All of the stages are really fun to brawl on and there isn't a single stage I didn't like.
There are tons of new challenges to complete, more trophies and many familiar game modes (Classic, events, stadium, all-stars etc.) return, some with slightly new spins and others in their original former glory!
One of the main new modes in the game is 8-player smash, which allows you to play with up to 7 other friends or CPU controlled characters, I personally found 8 player smash to be a lot of fun, I haven't had the chance to play with friends yet, but I simply cannot wait to do so!

    Cons:
Not all of the new modes are awesome, I personally found the Smash Tour mode to be tedious and I personally wouldn't want to sink any of my time into it.

Overall, Super Smash Bros for Wii U is a fantastic experience, it is by far the best game of 2014 (The only other game from 2014 i have played is FIFA 15, and who would give that a GOTY award?) and because of this game alone, there is absolutely NO reason the Wii U shouldn't be selling well.

10/10 (The problems aren't even worth mentioning as they are so minute and don't take away from the experience)

On the opposite side of the spectrum, offline party is absolutely amazing. The addition of 8-player smash works beautifully and without hiccup. Couple nitpicks though, Amiibo for this game feels just a little bit dumb. You place your amiibo in the game and it can fight with or against and level up. Problem is, that's just about it. Online seems to work most of the time, but every once in a while someone will have a horrible connection and the entire game for everyone is in slo-mo (which was actually kind-of cool....the first time.) Well, it's basically Brawl 2, for better or worse. Before I start; yes, I am one of THOSE people whose favorite Smash Bros. was Melee, so this review may be biased. If you played Melee even remotely competitively, you will likely not enjoy this game.

First, I'll focus on the good. The HD graphics are very nice, and the FPS is surprisingly stable; even in 8-player matches. Hit effects are flashy and satisfying albeit intrusive at times. The music and sound effects are well done and fitting as usual for a Smash game. They've also added a ton of characters, though some just seem redundant/pointless (Dark Pit).

Now for the bad; the gameplay. This is where the game is like Brawl in a bad way. It seems Nintendo can't decide weather they want it to be a party game or a competitive game. Everything is so floaty and slow that it almost feels like I'm drunk. The input lag they implemented in Brawl has apparently become a staple, which is just godawful and basically ruins the game. 8-player matches aren't as awesome as they sound; it's utter chaos, and not in good way. At least they got rid of tripping. *shudder*

While the stages look pretty, most are just a chore to play on. The blast zones are way too large and only serve to exacerbate the floaty slowness. Stage gimmicks and traps are in full effect here, some even worse than Brawl if you can fathom that.

In the end, the game is just not that fun. I played it at a friend's for a few hours, and I doubt I'll ever play again. Sure, it's flashy and pretty and loaded with content, but lacks good gameplay; the most important feature of any game. I understand that it's a party game and not to be played competitively, but it falls short even in that category. Stick with the Mario racing/sports/party games. At least those are fun.

For Glory: Characters are much better balanced than Brawl. Still not Melee-level, but very good for Wii U.

Graphics: Amazing for a 2011-console. Frames work great. Minimum bugs.

In my opinion, a great job from Sakurai, because it is not that easy to keep creating new characters and game modes. This might have been the last Smash.

Fun game as long as you're with friends, but that is about the only time. 8-player smash, the game mode everyone was so excited for, but I knew was gonna suck. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I found myself just using the final destination mode on every stage because the new stages blow, ESPECIALLY the Pac-Man stage. The new character additions are meh. I felt they added more characters to the series that don't really need them since they aren't as popular. Not trying to speak for everyone, but every person I have talked to about this games roster said they would have preferred more characters from the Sonic series, the Donkey Kong series, the return of Lucas, the Metroid Series, or the Star-Fox series. The game modes are a disappointment. Most of them are just returns from its predecessors, but they aren't as fun. They ruined Classic Mode. I was so excited to go through it but now its just horrible. Why did they remove going through battles in one go? It isn't a "Classic" mode if they modified it so much. Also, no adventure mode. What were they thinking? Single player in Brawl only lasted for me because there was a story mode. Playing tons of pointless matches alone will only last for so long. Playing Smash with friends, however, is always a fun time. That's where every flaw is negligible. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're playing this with a friend it should be fine. In my case, though, multiplayer is fun but loses its flare in about 45 minutes to an hour before I start getting bored of the same thing over and over again. My friend who I normally play with can play for hours, so I guess that says something. A solid, polished game- undeserving of its god-like praise in my opinion. Expand

The reason is simple. The gameplay is engaging, loads of fun, and it's surrounded by a level of production value that is unmatched. The fighting is simple enough for a child to pick up and press buttons and enjoy yet nuanced enough for adults and competitors to dive into the deep end and be rewarded for their knowledge of fighting mechanics and character knowledge.

In my opinion the most important cog to a complete and rewarding gaming experience is in the nuances of gameplay. Smash brothers nails nearly every aspect of the fighting and surrounds it with a coat of polish that is simply sublime. Connecting a signature move like a falcon punch, fireball, or thunderstrike is pure joy. The sound, animations, and responsiveness of pulling it off combine to provide little moments of nostalgic wonder for fans of the characters and more simply for their chosen fighter within the game itself.

Another aspect of the game that must be touched on is the staggering amount of options, customizations, unlockables, challengs, achievements, and game modes packed into the product. Each is filled with polish and is an impressive amount of work and thought into each and will push the game into the 100 hour+ range.

The only knock on the game is that online can have lag which I'd estimate one in eight matches sees gameplay slow to a crawl for a small period.

Go buy this smashing game and play it with or without your bros!

The character roster is also very big this time around and surprisingly balanced (Greninja is a bit cheap, especially online).

Speaking of online in terms of game modes I think it's near perfect but in terms of performance I did experience some lag but let me tell you it's a LOT better than Brawl was in this aspect.

Last complaint is that I really wanted another Subspace Emissary type of story just like in Brawl. That instead of Smash Tour would have been so much better.

As an avid Smash Bros. predictor, I was slightly disappointed that the roster wasn;t bigger, but it strikes a balance never seen before in a Smash Bros. game (no completely overpowered characters that have been discovered so far), and customizing character's abilities and specials adds a butt-ton of replay value.
The new modes are all pretty fun too (including Smash Tour, as long as you have a friend with you), but they can get stale after a while. I suggest rotating what you do to provide a bigger variety in gameplay experience.
The stages are incredible- the best of any Smash Bros. game to date. And we get a ton of great music scores to boot as well! Well over 50% of them are going to be going on my phone.
Overall, it makes some slight but successful changes to the Smash Bros. formula and is a blast to play with friends. I give it a 9.5 (rounded up to a 10).

I'd like to start off as saying I've been a die hard fan of the series ever since the first game came out. I have logged well over 300 hours on each playing it both as a party game and a serious fighting game. That's why it pains me to give this new entry such a low score.

Smash bros has always been a series that went above and beyond expectations. This game however is barely able to deliver enough to call itself a new game. It reuses so many resources from its predecessors. Never before has an entry reused so many old stages, character models or music. This alone would not necessarily be a bad thing if they used that saved time and money to introduce more new content than one would expect.

Unfortunately they did not. They introduce just barely as much new content as you would expect from a smash bros that was built from the ground up (not one that reuses most of its assets). There's about a dozen new character (including clones), 2 dozen new stages, 2 or 3 small new modes, some online improvements, etc. Nothing wow, no huge numbers anywhere. Pretty standard stuff.

Had the high amount of copy paste been the only thing to criticize from the game, I'd have given it a 8/10. The score of a solid game, just not one of a new or exciting one. That is not the case though as they removed so much content. They completely removed any semblance of the biggest single player mode of the game, adventure mode. That alone is like removing 20-30% of the games content. No more new monsters or familiar ones, no more huge expansive platforming stages with secrets, no more cutscenes, nothing. Just gone as if nothing. Not only that, they removed several characters. This includes possibly the most unique character of the game, the Ice Climbers. Another noteworthy one is the immensely popular Snake. These are huge losses.

Given all this, it's hard to say if the exchange of content is even the least bit beneficial at time. Some of the new modes are not very fun at all. The 8 player mode is far too chaotic for even an expert to be able to follow and is very hard to get going with actual people. The Smash Tour just tries to mix two very different genres and yields very poor results. The rest are decent additions but nothing to write home about.

The cherry on top that seals it's score is that they decided to sell a very cruel DLC for an already seemingly incomplete Smash Bros game. This DLC requires you to buy 2 copies of this game, one for each Nintendo platform, to gain access to a character that is not even new to the series. It is also pretty clear that they intend to sell even more dlc afterwards. For a game in which I cannot figure out where the extra effort from all these cut corners went, I cannot help but question their integrity when they chose to do this.

Some have called this Brawl 2.0, but that statement to me sounds very generous. Luckily enough for it, it is still a solid game. Just not a solid sequel. I do not recommend it for people that owned brawl, perhaps even melee. Still, thanks to the solid foundation of it's predecessors, Smash Bros Wii U is still a solid title for those new to the series.

I recommend playing with people, because the CPU in Smash Tour can... team up against you... :l
One of the few negative things is the Stage Builder, it's alright, but there are only 4 different special things, it also sucks that the Magma doesn't K.O when you are over 100% damage. You can't place much if your map is based on specials. There is no lag online, as far as I can tell. I haven't tested Amiibo with this game yet, but from what I saw, it looks cool. I'm not gonna say more, because I want you to see the rest for yourself.

Amiibo cost $13, which is almost like sucking money away if you're a collector. I find myself playing against one amiibo because I don't have others. I also find myself gambling all of my money on the online Spectate system in order to play Crazy Orders. The only other challenge is in Master Orders with Home-Run Contest. Who the heck can get 4000 feet? I do enjoy this game, and the graphics are quite something. I also really like the songs in the game. Expand

However, despite all of the heavenly reviews this game has received, I do have a couple of qualms with the game. Through my extensive playing of the game, I have encountered minor graphic glitches with the game (that I am sure will be fixed through updates), and upon closely examining the Challenges board found in the Main Menu...I came to notice that several of the requirements to unlock things on the Challenges board can really only be done by someone who is an absolute expert with the game.
My last major qualm is the Stage Builder. So much more could've been done with the Builder, yet in some ways I feel that the selection of actual items to place on-stage is even more limited than Brawl. HOWEVER...I do love that our stages can finally be whatever shape we want it to be.

Overall, I LIKE Smash Wii U, but I do not obsessively LOVE it.

Best game on Wii U ever. The game play is great, the graphics are great, the online is great. Everything about it is great. I found no problems with the game. 8 player smash is a great introduction to the series. Single Player is better than ever. The Mii fighters and Amiibos really help make this the best Smash Bros. game I've ever played.

If I would rate the game with the fighting-only in mind, then it would be a 10. It's the smash formula perfected, polished, made more enjoyable than ever.
HOWEVER it worries me when people give this game only perfect 10's...for me it's a solid 8, it's a great game but there are 3 points that are pretty annoying. First, the controls. I am used to the 3DS iteration and honestly I don't like

HOWEVER it worries me when people give this game only perfect 10's...for me it's a solid 8, it's a great game but there are 3 points that are pretty annoying. First, the controls. I am used to the 3DS iteration and honestly I don't like the way commands work on Wii U. Why change it? On 3DS you could change the default controls, but TELL ME WHY on the Wii U version you can't, but the workaround is: you have to register a "nickname" for the controls, then you have to manually select your name after you selected a character, if you wanna play with custom controls. This is really lame (especially some modes won't remember your last choice). Even more lame if you're the only one using your Wii U at home. I wish Nintendo will patch this! I also hate the fact that sometimes you are against an opponent and the hitbox is acting kinda strange; the hit is registered BEHIND the opponent and it misses. You have to face your opponent properly but the annoying thing is the way character moves. It's a common occurrence to miss items because you moved too far. It's like the analog stick is too sensible - sometimes it's just hard to get EXACTLY where you wanted. It can lead to some frustration in fights.
The second point is: the lack of "Adventure" mode made me speechless. As a lover of the "Subspace Emissary" mode (or whatever stupid name that was) back in the day I am left wanting more. The adventure mode on 3DS was OK, why leave it out? I absolutely hated the board game. It feels like Super Smash could have easily packed more stuff, or "better" stuff, as brawl did back in the day.
The third and last point is the presentation. I hate the layout, the menus, the interface feels messy and too chaotic IMHO I see it's a common complaint with a lot of people, not only me...
I would say Super Smash is a solid game that works but it's not a reason to add an extra point, I see a lot of people do, and it makes me sad this gen when you see that it becomes an extra point to have a working game out of the box. It's how every game should be. It's the way all Nintendo games always been. We should remove points when games don't work, not add points just because they work.
Now I must praise Nintendo for including demos of the original games behind most characters. There's also so many "collectibles" in the game (Sakurai-style) your head will spin. I must give an extra point because of it. Despite its flaws, you can tell the game was made with love for the characters and the retro games are a great addition.
Anyway...everything I wrote is my opinion, and my opinion ONLY, and because it's under 9 I feel I will get downvoted like crazy but I just wanted to speak out about this game's issues because there are quite a few IMHO. Still a solid & fun game. Recommended (if not a 'must have') if you own a Wii U! /Peace

Smash is back, better than ever. The mechanics are much more quick-paced like Melee as opposed to the sluggish Brawl physics. However, while the core requirements are meant, a few minor things do irk me about this title.

For one, all but 9 characters are given to you at the start. While that may sound awesome initially, I found the rewarding system of character unlocks was all but gone

For one, all but 9 characters are given to you at the start. While that may sound awesome initially, I found the rewarding system of character unlocks was all but gone in this title.

Secondly, the Classic mode is pretty weird this time around. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems to be some strange battle royale system that's never adequately explained.

Lastly, and this is the biggest issue, the target smash system. Target smash was in its prime back in Melee when each character had their own, charater-specific stages. In brawl, they pussied out and gave us just a few generic stages that could be played on with any character. But in SSBWiiU, they completely ruin this once mighty minigame. Instead of breaking the targets yourself, you launch a bomb across a field into a group of structures containing targets (sound familiar?). The result is a train wreck of an experience. The glass cage which surrounds your starting platform seldom ever breaks, resulting in all too many infuriating explosions at ground zero. On the off chance that you can actually manage to propel the explosive through the cage, what follows is an underwhelming cutscene of an explosion. The Target Smash in this game just isn't fun; it's a poor man's Angry Birds.

However, SSBWiiU is filled to the brim and above with content, and anything I haven't mentioned above works flawlessly and provides more entertainment then the past installments put together. It's been a while since I felt so in need of video game time, most games aren't that addicting to me anymore. But this title keeps calling me back. Now if you'll excuse me...

There is great variety in character choices, stages, and a TON of unlockable/collectible content. And of course, the multiplayer both online and offline is amazing. Games with this much polish and content are hard to come by these days and this one definitely satisfies. As per usual to the Smash Bros. series, this game appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers and does a great fan service to its players.

If I had to pick a flaw (and it's hard to find one), I would only complain about the lack of a deep single player experience like what was in Brawl. I understand their reasoning for not including one and of course, the multiplayer is by far the most important part of the game.

Smash Bros. is well-worth buying a Wii U console for if you've been waiting. There are several solid titles out but this one takes the cake. Very fine work from Nintendo and many hours of enjoyment to be had with this gem.
