Boring combat system where I am just sitting there with the controller in my hand waiting for the character to finish an auto attack. The world looks bland but I can live with that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After being so overwhelmend with XBC 1 and especially 2 this game is such a downer. The characters are boring as hell. No jokes at all because everyone is sooooo sensitive and woke and thus maximum boring and unapproachable. One might almost think it was produced for the new western market where every character needs to be totally correct and mindful so that no gamer might be offended in some way. The result are shallow characters. And then the world. Damn, I mean, big worlds are nice but this is just running and running and running for nothing. Maybe the story is thrilling? Not yet. I am in chapter 4 now. But so far it could be a more stupid and artificial narrative of good and evil (oooh, humans fight each other but it turns out they are just the puppets of some evil masters... laaaame). It is just so predictable that even a spin will not be satisfiying. But maybe the combat and looting system is fun? NO! It is just repetitive and intransparent. I mean a group of 6 + 1 hero whereby 6 are controlled by AI. Wow. When the combat system in XBC 2 was fun as hell imo this one is kind of the opposite. Even the chain attacks are just not satisfying. After Monolith soft convinced me with XBC 1 and 2 and even their assistance in Zelda Breath of the Wild I bought the game plus the extension pass for 100 Euro. Well, a huge disappointment. I dont get why so many people here rate that game so high. I don't play that many games but if this is considered great for the majority I don't wanna know how bad it can be on the market. Maybe some positive thing: The side quest are not that useless as in XBC 1 and 2. Thus 5 points as I am playing it but always with a bad feeling in the gut and unsure to continue. Expand

XC3 is probably the best in the series as a 'game': the combat system is in top form, the side quests are fun and actually worth doing (side quests are garbage in XC1&2), and progression feels compelling. I haven't yet gotten bored at 40 hours. Also, the game gets bonus points for taking the Nopon mostly out of focus. They have always been cringe and stupid.

*HOWEVER* -- strangely, I still *liked* XC1&2 more. The story of XC1 - the whole Bionis/Mechonis situation - is simply unbeatable, and outshines any of its gameplay flaws; it is the best. The characters of XC2 -- Pyra, Mythra, Nia, Gramps, Rex, and the rest of the (non-Nopon) party -- are, to me at least, highly loveable and fun to be around. Even though XC2 is infuriating in many ways, I always stuck with it because I just loved adventuring with its characters. XC3 doesn't meet XC1's story or XC2's characters, and so, even though it may be the best constructed game in the series, I just like it a bit less than the others.

That said, I am currently in Chapter 6 of 7, and the story is really starting to open up. Once you start to learn about what's 'really going on' in the world of XC3, it gets good. -- But it took me 40 hours to get to that point! And that's too long. The writing up until Chapter 6 is a little bit too vanilla and there's not enough chemistry between the characters to save things, as was the case in XC2.

Despite all this ... XC3 is still a great game! Really enjoying my time with it, and I'll definitely be beating it soon.

I’m a huge fun of JRPG but after a long time of waiting, I have to admit that this game disappointed me.
The first 4 chapters of this game is so boring that I couldn’t concentrate on the game. And then a pretty ridiculous plot twist happened between chapter 5 and 6, honestly I didn’t feel any emotional frustration during these events. Then chapter 7 had the most unfinished-feeling ending in the whole Xeno-series. Also, there were so much plot holes in the story I just can’t make it up and understand what exactly happened.
It’s time for Takahashi to retire. If XBC and XBC2 are 9/10,I’ll give this game 0/10.

If you like this game, you probably also like sniffing paint. I have never played a more soulless, lifeless RPG than Xenoblade. The gameplay is awful, the storyline might as well not even exist. It's incredibly boring. Nintendo fanboys need to submit this to Goodwill and go play Final Fantasy VII remake. Not this low budget piece of crap.

Edit: after completing the game im feeling compelled to give this game a perfect score due to the lore and its sheer size of content in contrast to my initially explained reason to give it a 9/10.

This is a love letter to all Xenoblade fans when it comes to all the references of past games. Without getting into too much detail or spoilers there is just a few caveats to the game that hinders it to have a perfect score, like the fact that all initial tutorials are vast and not skippable.

Now for the goods things: The combat mechanic is mostly unchanged from previous games, in fact, it feels like a combination of Xenoblade 1, 2 and Torna DLC, while also simplifying its chain attack functionality. Leveling became non tedious thanks to the existence of new mob category (ELITE) which grants a minimum of 150% EXP bonus, combined this with overkill, a chain attack function which adds a 300% EXP bonus and you have the recipe of easy leveling.

Story is very intriguing and it doesn't shy away from the concepts of betray, grief, despair, death and fear. it shows a very crude reality of war, while also introducing concepts of existentialism something that most Xeno series include on their stories.

Overall, its a well rounded story, gameplay is smooth and dynamic, cinematics are incredibly filled with emotion from the characters involved, and the game engine can handle heavy amounts of passive and aggressive NPC without feeling slow or stuttering, making its vast world feel alive and not empty at all.

Definitely a decent game with an interesting story but after 70 hours, I can’t help but notice that the characters just aren’t as likable as they were in Xenoblade 2 and I just don’t care as much about the cut scenes. Expand

While some people complain about the performance, It is actually quite impressive for the switch and performance is not everything when it comes to video games. I've never cared more about characters more in a video game before, each one is complex and I was always waiting to see how their arcs would be resolved. The combat is complex but it is explained very well to the player, Unlike the previous entry to the series which seemed complex just for the sake of being complex. The class system lets you completely change the way you play to how you want to. I really liked a certain character but did not like their class and perfect playing as a healer, but with a press of a button, boom! i'm a different class that plays completely different

The world is huge and vast with many breathtaking views and incredible landscapes. Say what you want about this game's performance, you can't deny that the art style is amazing. Each NPC and character has a unique and charming design, that just makes you care about each of them even more. No spoilers, but the games story seems rather simple at first, but as you progress you will learn to take nothing and face value. It has more twists and turns then I can count, and a plot twist for the ages. If you are looking to get into JRPGS, are a long time fan of the series, or even if you don't think it's your cup of tea, I can't recommend it enough. it might just be my favorite game of all time, and it's by far the best game on switch. Therefore, I give Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a 10/10.

This has always been a gripe with this series, and prior to BOTW it was considered a fair trade-off — but now we’ve seen the open world optimized for broad scope without feeling bloated & it’s been hard not to notice excessive map-filler ever since.

If you like any of the other series entries you will enjoy the heck out of this.

As you may have guessed, there is a lot to say about Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and I’m not sure I’ve said all of what I could yet. It’s fitting, really, for a series of games that prides itself on the excess it delivers in quite literally every possible regard, without compromising on the core quality of the experience (something very few other developers have managed to do). Xenoblade games are massive, they defy the imagination, and they can often break the mind with their scope and sheer volume. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is no different. In taking together over a decade long narrative arc that the geniuses at Monolith Soft have been working towards, it takes on the best of Xenoblade 1 and 2, and then brings its own additions to the table. The end result is something so jaw-droppingly big, it’s a wonder it doesn’t collapse under its own weight. Under the stewardship of a lesser developer, it probably would have, or at least, the seams would have begun to show. Under Monolith Soft, that entire excess comes together in one glorious package, tightly integrated and thoroughly compelling, not just the best game in its series and by its developer, but also arguably among the greatest games on its system and in its genre. Now that is suitably lavish praise for a series that deals with excesses like Xenoblade Chronicles does- and it’s well earned.

A most excellent new entry in the Xenoblade franchise, probably the best so far, the Monolith continues to improve and proves themselves as one of the most consistent game developers. Very well written story, great characters, a HUGE world to explore, deep and addictive battle system with unique interesting mechanics, and godly soundtrack.

This game absolutely fails its predecessors and has cheapened the brand. While the worlds and monsters are imaginative and beautiful, the cringey anime garbage stuff is enough to turn off most people. I searched for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on YouTube yesterday before launch. The top two videos were the final cutscene and final boss battle, with a third recommended clip including the ending in its entirety. Worst yet - the thumbnail spoiled major moments in the game and would have been visible to those who are looking up reviews, trailers, or literally anything else on the game ahead of release. That sucks and there was no stopping it.

Clear downturn in the saga. Instead of making a fun game for everyone, it's only palatable for neogaf and resetera users.
The design of the characters is bad and does not earn the love and affection of the characters of the other games.
The story is bad and the gameplay is stuck in JRPG topics.

This game capture the best that Xenoblade Chronicles can offer based in the past two other games. Basically:

Story = 10/10. Intriguing, touching and presents a good premise.
Combat = 9/10. Fun and dynamic. Not much strategically based like XC2 but it's well done.
Music = 10/10. Good OST. Every music fits with the momment.
Characters: 10/10. Everyone gets attention and developement.

The game itself is good, the story is great but a lot of things are repeated, there are cinematic worthy of a manga, the fights are exciting (but you fight the same boss 90% of the time) and the graphics and locations are nice but many things spoil the game.
    1. A cutscene every 5 minutes during 35h is infernal, the group will rest every 300m. And they talk for 10-15 min every time, I know

    1. A cutscene every 5 minutes during 35h is infernal, the group will rest every 300m. And they talk for 10-15 min every time, I know it's an rpg but it's close to a narrative game rather than an rpg.
    2. The class system is not really useful, in the end we keep 2 tanks - 2 heals - 2 DPS, it's useless that all the characters know how to heal if we only have two healers during the whole game.
    3. Being French, it's always sad not to have French audio (like FF7 remake)
    4. The fights with 3 characters in Xenoblade 1 were already too much loaded but there with 7 characters in our team + the monsters we find ourselves with actions in all the directions we don't even find the character we play in the melt the fights are too scrambled and the special move is ridiculously too powerful (we can kill a mid-bar boss with a sequence)

Tiene todo lo que un buen JRPG debe tener.
Narrativa, exploración, combates, misiones secundarias que no son solo de recadero, personajes carismáticos, etc...

Xenoblade games feel like you're controlling an MMO party, and they've really refined this gameplay in XC3. In previous titles of the series these systems could feel a bit clunky and under utilized. It would often feel like you couldn't quite get the gameplay loop down to how they intended it. Fights would end too quickly, or you couldn't get the combos to work properly. All of these issues seem to have completely disappeared with XC3.

This is especially true on the harder difficulties, and it really shines when you're fighting bosses. There is the concept of a main tank, off tank, healer, utility, and dps classes. Unless you're over leveled, you will almost certainly have to switch party members to better control the actions of your party. During these longer fights, you will have many opportunities to leverage all of the proper mechanics, and it’s immensely satisfying to pull off.

There is a phenomenal class system that allows you to leverage skills and arts from other classes that you’ve mastered. The classes are unlocked both through main story quests, and optional side quests. It wouldn’t surprise me if some of the classes end up being decently hidden.

Like other titles on the series, the open world maps can definitely feel a bit lifeless. There are great incentives to explore the maps, but don’t expect any type of dynamic event or sense of the world being lived in. This is true of all JRPG’s so I would think most people will be expecting this going into this game.

Any potential downside from the dull environments is quickly overlooked by the fact that you can play this phenomenal RPG anywhere you want. The fact that we are able to play this phenomenal 80+ Hour RPG’s in handheld mode is amazing. I'm a father of 2 so being able to play XC3 in bite size chunks on the couch is really a great bonus.

I hope they never stop making these games. I love this series.

The combat is boring and repetitive. When I pay $60, I expect a combat system with depth and detail. All the developers did in this game is put big boobs on every character, to give players the illusion that the game is fun. None of that is fun for me. The physics are beyond horrible. The splash physics don't look as good as they do in the cutscenes. The animations are laughable.

It says on the back of the game case to explore. What is there to explore in this game? It is the exact same trash as 90 percent of modern open world games. Just a boring and empty landscape full of grass, rocks, and vegetation. Why would I want to explore that? Why can't I explore the village that is in the intro cutscene instead? Developers these days are so cheap and lazy, they can't even be bothered to make enough villages or man-made environments, because it's easier to copy and paste grass everywhere. Speaking of grass, it doesn't even react to the player's movement. The characters are so annoying. They keep repeating the same lines over and over again when attacking enemies. Boss battles are lazily designed and so are the side quests.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, though why you would even want to play a game this bad is beyond me , there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. For goodness sake, why are video game developers so obsessed with the word Chronicles? Enough already. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness and or are a weirdo.

+ Good battle system but a bit of annoying un-skippable animation.
+ Large map with beautiful graphic (the best on the Switch I think)
+ Decent music though weaker than XBC and XBC2
+ XBC and XBC2 fans will happily see some familiar faces
    Cons
    - Too many boring memory movies in the first 3 chapters of the game, revoke my feeling of watching anime, but I cannot speed up, hopefully, next time they will add fast forwarding function (not skip or I need to check the movie after the game).
    - The tempo of storytelling is awfully stepped back from XBC and XBC2, I didn't really get into the game until finishing chapter 4.
    - Some of the most important information about the world in this game is in subrequests that you don't need to finish, and even some are in subrequests after you finished the game. I don't think this is a good subrequest design pattern. You shouldn't put the main story into the subrequest to have some decent requests.
    - The ending, gives me an unfinished feeling. This is the true drawback of this game. Is this implying the DLC contents? Why publish an unfinished game then?

    I'd give this game 5/10.

Stylistically, it stands apart from both the over the top anime fantasy of 2 and the grittier, more sepia toned 1, making it the most distinct and enjoyable entry in the series to date.

Compared to previous entries in the series, XC3 manages to improve on basic quality of life while keeping many of the elements that fans love. Changes to the mini map and an increased number of fast travel spots make exploring Aionis much more satisfying than in XC2, and the addition of traversal skills throughout the story help to make older areas worth revisiting.

The traditional British voice acting has always been an inspired choice for the series, but in XC3 it really shines. Each character, whether by virtue of their regional accent or just through the VA's talent, feels distinct and full of life. This can be a bit of a double edged sword, however, as when a VA fails to nail their line or embody their character, it shows.

The story is an old classic retold with some new twists. Each of the members of Ouroboros get their fair share of development through the main story, while side characters called Heroes (which replace the Blades from XC2) are given their own development through side stories and quests that feel much more integral to the overall experience than in previous entries. The lengthy cutscenes return for XC3, and if there is one negative about this game it's how frequently they crop up.

If you're a fan of JRPGs or previous entries in the Xenoblade series, give 3 a try. You'll be hooked!

Ultimately, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 represents the pinnacle of the series, both gameplay-wise and narratively. The characters are another highlight of the game. They are well-drawn, with only a small amount of formulaicness. [Issue#321]

I began XC3 knowing I'd enjoy it because of the fun I had with the previous games. What I didn't expect was for this to become one of my favorite JPRGs of all-time! With its engaging open world, engrossing combat system, loveable characters and gripping story, this game is a masterpiece of the genre! [Issue #62 – November/December 2022, p. 67]

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a clear improvement over its predecessors in almost every way. It streamlines so much and avoids past pitfalls, though there’s still work to be done in terms of balancing the difficulty. There’s a grounded story here with a solid cast of characters, and the basic plot is much easier to digest. The world design exceeds past efforts with ease, and the implementation of Hero Quests is a game changer. While the devs have done an admirable job making the battle system easier to grasp, it feels like the series has fully explored and exhausted these core combat mechanics, signaling it’s time for the next game to change things up. As a whole, it stands as a phenomenal RPG with a one-of-a-kind sense of exploration you can’t find anywhere else.
