I'm between a 7 and an 8 on this one. The story is good but they desperately needed an editor to come in and cut it down. By the end the cutscenes were starting to feel like a chore because they could be so long and so frequent. By the end the cutscenes were starting to feel like a chore because they could be so long and so frequent. That said I did enjoy the story and loved the ending but just found the pacing to be kind of awful.

The gameplay is fun but can get repetitive. Some of the new systems like interlinking work well but personally I think the 2nd game had much more variety as you could get so many different creatures to fight alongside you.

I think there are definitely some areas the series continues to struggle with. The sidequests often feel a little boring as they're mostly boring fetch quests and what's worse is when critical path missions also turn into fetch quests. Find the 6 doodads so we can go to the place where the story will actually progress. Some of the repeating dialogue continues to be a chore... yelling about doodads repeatedly does get tiresome.

Also, I found the last stretch to be a bit of a hassle. The final dungeon is just quite long with lots of enemies and you need to fight them all as the bosses will be quite a lot higher than your level when you first enter that place. Plus it seems like the final boss doesn't have checkpoints. I beat it first time thankfully but if I hadn't i'm not sure i'd have the energy to repeat that one hour encounter.

All in all it's a good game but also a mixed bag. Definitely one of the better jrpg series around but I hope some of these problems get addressed in future titles.

In competition with the other Xenoblade games for best RPG on the switch. While I believe the story is not as good as the first or second, Xenoblade 3 has a beautiful story. What makes 3 outshine 1 and 2 is definitely the gameplay and combat. Truly another masterpiece by Tetsuya Takahashi.

A very complete and introspective game. I loved its story, and the character development; although I would have liked to see more of one of the main characters. The soundtrack is exquisite and the game is quite balanced in many aspects. There were moments where there were small frame drops, but nothing that hindered the game experience. Super recommended game.

Another beautiful master piece by Monolith Soft, they once again show the gaming industry how an open world game should be made. I don't want to post any spoilers since this is a story driven game, but I will say this game is a must play for anyone looking for a great JRPG game to play.

Monolithsoft once again deliver a spectacular game for the Xenoblade franchise. From story to characters I loved every step in this entry. The battle system is tight with tons of depth and expansion. I do wish that the Kevesi side of things worked better as the Agnian classes were just "better" in my experience.

    - The world is very empty and lacks proper towns to see in the landscape.
    - Never been a big fan of the battle system in the first place, after so many games it's so stale.
    - Your team constantly keep saying the same things over and over after a battle.
= The battle system been stale and the exploration and story been a step down from previous
games, this game is a huge disappointment though it's still good in places. The story despite been a step down has it's moments, there is a very good story point about 2/3 into the game I won't spoil. The environment isn't as fun to explore but there is a more open bit later but getting around it is a nightmare because of the boat you have which has horrible controls. I really hope the 4th game reboots the series with a much improved battle system and a more interesting world to explore, hopefully on better future Nintendo hardware.

Easily one of the best JRPGs of all time and for a good reason. It's incredible how well the characters are designed and how they develop over the story. The combat is smooth and super fun if you understand the mechanics. The only problem I currently have with the game is that the final boss wasn't well-designed compared to the other installments in the series.

Blown away by this game. The combat is the best the series has seen, the exploration even gives xenoblade X a run for its money. And the amount of dialogue and interaction with the main cast, and the wealth of side quest with all the various colonies makes this an easy contender for my favourite game of the year and maybe even in the past decade

This was the perfect way to close out the trilogy. I felt more emotionally invested in the characters in this game than in any previous.

It would be damn hard not to be absorbed by the main cast, or hell, even the side characters. What I absolutely appreciate is how to game will slowly introduce new mechanics throughout the game. Xenoblade never felt stale or stagnant, because the game would throw something new at me, and I always looked forward to that. So, what’s bad about the game? Nothing. What I did find “wrong” are primarily nitpicks rather than atrocious game designs/decisions.

Look, I think Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a masterpiece. It was never a chore, it never got boring, its loads of fun, and I always felt the urge to keep coming back. For all the JRPG fans, go play this and enjoy the experience.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I have no doubt is my personal Game of the Year after consuming roughly 200 hours of my life. I can say now that I've finished all 200+ quests, maxed out all affinity in every area, found every collectable and unlocked every class for every character - This is the everything the series has built up to and more.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the most emotional journey yet. Taking place in a world consumed by endless war, the stakes have never been higher nor has the situation of the main cast ever felt more hopeless. If the world of the first game was a struggle, and the story of the second was an uphill battle, then the third entry is a seemingly bottomless pit with only a glimmer of light to chase after. Building from the intense cutscenes already perfected in 2, each story moment in 3 had me hanging off the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next, and how the heroes could possibly come out on top. This made the feeling of hope mean more in this game than either before, and gave us easily the best villains of the franchise thus far.

It must be also be said that this is my favorite cast of characters to date, and that's a result of the brilliant writing right from the start of the journey. Getting the entire cast within the first hour or so is initially jarring, but because of that I grew to love them as a whole even more than any of the cast before then. With an air of mystery about each one, traveling with them and growing with them, watching their struggles and achievements as I learned about them. All these factors led to me becoming emotionally invested into each one, leading to many smiles, tears, and laughter, sometimes all at the same time. Even all the extra party members you gain along the way were super enjoyable and well written, making each one feel like a full cast member with the time spent with them. Between the amazing writing of both the plot and characters, each twist and turn of this journey had me just as invested as the highlight moments of 1 and 2, and that feeling kept with me the entire game.

Gameplay wise it's a no-brainer that this is the best. 7 party members battling at once, incorporating the combat systems of both the previous games into an amazing hybrid that goes a step further with the fusion mechanic. Chain attacks are at their best, interlinking adds a fun element to the game, and you always feel great engaging in every battle. Changing and unlocking new character classes always made the battle feel fresh and fun. Some of my favorite tracks from the franchise to date come from this entry, including a new version of "You Shall Know Our Names" that equals the original to me in every way. The world is the biggest and most vast it has been yet, and even after dozens of hours of pure exploration, I'm certain I've not yet seen it all. The new way the areas and affinities are handled was my favorite yet, giving me a feeling of being more invested into the world of this game than either of the other two games (which says a lot when considering Colony 4 in the first game; every area felt like that to me). I wondered how they would surpass the Blade Quests from 2, and the Hero Quests did that and so much more. Thanks to them the line is now forever blurred between main quests and side quests, and I couldn't be happier about that.

The amount of content in this game is just incredible. The biggest world yet to explore, filled with so much to see and do. The most in-depth quests, the biggest chapters each filled with intensity and emotion, and an amazing soundtrack that pushes all the above forward. A perfect cast, an amazing story, and a journey so unique and unlike anything I've ever gone on... Yes, to me, this game was perfect. To go a step further, I now consider Xenoblade to be the perfect trilogy of games. Each one tells its own story, but they all connect to each other in some way, and each one really grows from the entry before it and can be appreciated more by those who played their predecessors. I'm not certain I can ever pick a favorite anymore, as each game delivers an experience unlike any that came before it, forming a perfect triangle - three pillars that stand strongly and independently, but hold one another up to new heights. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is no different; a bold new entry delivering an experience unlike any I've felt before, yet still managing to raise the bar the series has set before it.

This game is what a JRPG should aim to be. The only negatives I could find is that the world would benefit from being all connected without loading screens between regions. Masterpiece. A true redemption from the second game. Mature, emotional, well told. Great history, combat, script, music. XC1 was an experiment, with a lot of flaws, but ended being marvelous. XC2 was a bad step. Off context, fanservice, hard to take serious. XC3 improves the first game and do everything right. Play it!

There's not really any criticisms I could give about the game that would be enough to change this score. It's not a perfect game, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is just about everything I wanted it to be. The gorgeous music, wide open environments, inspired art direction, stellar voice acting, and emotionally gripping story make for a game that I can see myself playing for years to come.

I decided to get into this saga with this game, and the truth is that it has been very comforting, the game is complex but at the same time simple, different from anything I have played, the story is very good, and in general, in all the aspects there is a lot of quality. - Terrible storytelling, cliche, slow paced and overwrought.
    - Emo-teen cast, cliched storylines and very repetitive voiced (combat)lines
    - “Open world” blocked by invisible walls and one-shot enemies that forces you to stay on the main route
    - The many systems “layered” upon one another are rather superfluous. The combat mechanics are rather easy and enemies fall (too) quickly. This causes you to level-up (too) fast which in turn means you are overpowered for many encounters.

Despite the many lack luster elements, the hack & loot mechanic has me hooked and frequently returning. As such, I currently rate this a 6 but perhaps it will improve as the game slowly opens up with more play.

The plot was the biggest disappointment compared to the previous entries in the series. I went in expecting something closer to WW1 theme, but it's just a standard high school JRPG plot. The colonies are different classrooms, and the bosses of each colony are the teachers. Most of the side quests and plot elements are basic "coming of age" tropes. Fortunately, the characters don't lean hard into common anime archetypes, or this would have been a terrible game.

Combat is decent, but essentially it's mash buttons to win. Xenoblade 1 & 2 were similar in this regards, so you're getting more of the same. Most of the fun should be in the customization of the characters through the skills, arts, accessories, gems, etc, but it's just too much. Every time you change the class for a character you'll need to redo all of those things, or just hit the auto button and take what it gives you. Early on the number of skill/gem slots available to you are restricted and the number of items available to fill those slots is limited, so it was pretty manageable. By the end of the game, the number of accessories in my inventory had become so bloated that I was just hitting the auto config button and moving on with the story. Sometimes less is more, and Monolith Soft needs to learn that lesson.

The game also has way too many materials/items with a very minimal quality of life features to track things. The number of items is easily in the hundreds. If you need a particular item, the game has no encyclopedia to help you remember where you found something previously. I guess they expect everyone to grab their phone and google the item location.

I should also mention that this game does have many frame rate drops during combat. I played docked with an OG switch and mostly encountered them during battles with multiple enemies. Considering that you need some timing rhythm to cancel arts, the slow-downs do take away from the fun of combat and my overall enjoyment of the game.

Overall, the game is a decent game to play, but compared to the previous Xenoblade game it is a disappointment. The high school theme made the plot generic and less interesting. Game mechanics didn't feel polished and feels like a haphazard combination of the prior two games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. And yet another masterpiece from Monolith Soft after Xenoblade Chronicles DE. I just finished the game's main story after 120 hours of gameplay and damn was that a good ride! Comparing to XC1 and XC2 (I have finished both), a lot of things have been improved upon in this game. Especially the side quests, character depth, character interactions, and combat. The game doesn't throw everything at you at once so there are many tutorial screens during your journey BUT the new mechanics introduced through chapters made the gameplay feel fresh.

People complain about the graphics but bruhh, I mean the textures can be bad at times yes, but this game looks so friggin' good for a handheld game. I personally preferred playing this on handheld mode because I like to play chill in bed while playing, and mostly because the post processing that MS developed for this game made the handheld experience a lot better compared to previous titles.

The story... its philosophical story had a bittersweet but satisfying ending. I had goosebumps throughout the final cutscene. Although some people had problems with it, I really liked how the game ended. It was the raw bittersweet feeling of moving on... away from the past and one's past regrets, and instead looking forward into the future. It hurts, but we've got to do it anyway either because we simply have to, or because it is for the people we love and care for the most. The ending had so much heart and meaning. It's all I could ask for from a Xenoblade story. I honestly can't wait for the DLC story.

OST is hands down amazing. Especially during battles! Nothing else need be said.

Like Xenoblade Chronicles DE, it wasn't perfect, but it is still a masterpiece for me, thus I give it a 10/10.

PS. Thank god for the English dub actors and director. No more "HaiYAH..." for me or for anyone. I finished the game on English dub but now I'm gonna try Japanese on new game plus.

That's not to say that this game is completely devoid of deep characters or great moments between them. But when I find that half of the main 6 characters are just uninteresting and not compelling in any way, even after seeing through the entirety of their story, I have to say I am just underwhelmed.

I think this chalks up to the fact that a lot of this game felt like it needed more time in the oven. Despite it's already massive size, it seems like bits and pieces are just missing sometimes. A lot of the side content kept me engaged, but if I were to charge straight through the story this would definitely be the shortest main story to date. I feel like that part of the game should definitely have been given more love. Especially at the beginning and towards the end.

Definitely worth a play, but probably won't return to it.

I loved Xenoblade 1 DE (might be my favourite game of all time) and 2, and I really wanted to love this game too, but sadly, it fell short for me.

First the gameplay, it's ridiculously easy to get overleveled, which takes away any challenge. I had about 20 bonus levels left that I never used and was still about 10 levels too high. If you play all the sidemissions, you're guaranteed to be overleveled halfway through, and that meant that I spent most of the fights on auto-battle as there was no challenge to it. As you can't unlock a class if you're 5 levels or more higher than the monster you're fighting, it also makes unlocking classes more difficult than in needs to be. An option to level down from the start would be really nice.

Added to that, chain attacks are way too powerful, they can beat unique monsters 5 levels higher, even if they have more than half health. This makes it extremely repetitive, because instead of a tactical battle, it's just a race to the chain attack, especially with a particular healer class late game.

Storywise, there's a lot that gets set up that doesn't necessarily have a fulfilling conclusion, as a fan of the first two, I'm a bit disappointed.

Lastly, the graphics. The art style is absolutely gorgeous, but the limited power of the Switch means they needed to make some choices, and those aren't always the right ones. Some textures look like PS2 days, while at other times the game is absolutely stunning. At some points it's the most beautiful game on Switch, but at others it's similar to Pokemon Sw&Sh.

The good: The characters, the first 30 hours of gameplay and story
The bad: Became very boring and repetitive in the end, story didn't deliver on its early promise, graphics are hit and miss.

Sadly, I'm a bit disappointed. The first half of the game gets a 9, the second half gets a 5, averaging out at 7.

Cons: I really don't understand how anyone can give this game a good review, unless you just really like to watch people die for fun, especially young people. I mean there a lot of people like that, so I guess that explains a lot. The story is a complete mess, the music is usually dry (some tracks are good), and the gameplay is kind of boring. But my main issue is that the main bad guys are so generically bad, 2D, and mono-black morally that it's kind of hilarious. Like watching an old Disney movie where the bad guy is just pure evil for the shock of it. I prefer stories with a least a little substance and antagonists, not villians who want nothing more than to see the world burn for absolutely no reason. This game is like burnt, stale bread.

Overall, I highly recommend gamers who enjoy a great story telling JRPG with fun gameplay! The series is hitting their pinnacle and glad people are finally recognizing it's value that I saw 20yrs ago and 15yrs ago when the first Xenoblade Chronicles came out on the WII!

Combat system, after you put at least 10 hours into the game it’s starting to be good, at the beginning might be boring for some. Systems in the game, there is aaa lot of systems, even when game does pretty good job to guide you though them, it takes lots of time to learn and need a little bit of patience. Climate, is darker then xenoblade chronicles 2. Graphics, I don’t require a great graphic, you can give me two dots on screen, and as far you will provide something good, interesting, involving, funny to do with the dots I will be happy with game. In xc3 we are on the edge of switch capabilities, but game looks very good :).
    Game 10/10 for me :)

Best combat of the three xenoblades, however the story was the least impactful and last chapter and final boss was big disappointment. The music and exploration are not as interesting as the first two.

    - Exploration doesn't feel very reward
    - Receiving side quests feels like you're being given the runaround a lot
    - Side quests are kind of a slog, with many MMORPG style collectathons
    - Pacing can be kind of weird, with chapter 7 feeling pretty stretched out even without doing side quests.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a fun game with a beautiful looking world and a fun main cast, but the exploring the world can be a bit of a drag sometimes with mediocre rewards for doing so and sidequests that can be a bit of a boring slog. I'd say the main story is probably the game's strongest suit and I might've liked the game a lot longer if the game focused in on that a lot more.

All that said, it has interesting ideas and I'll keep an eye on DLC and whatever Monolith might do in the future.

Had to edit my review after finishing this. I was a little harsh initially and after finding my comfort zone, this has to be one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The story and character writing is so well written that I just found myself get lost in this world. I probably cried 20 times playing this. There's so many hard topics or absolutely tragic situations going on. The writing did an amazing job getting me to feel for these characters and side characters. Sometimes I would just get goosebumps with what was going on absolutely devestated. This also ended so beautifully with just the most fulfilling ending ever that totally made my time feel well spent. Took me exactly 100 hours to finish this games main story mission and all the hero and heroic missions, along with quite a few side quests. I'm going to this about this game for a long time. I've never seen a game do writing this epic before and this large of a scale, I'm just so happy to see this can be done this high quality Honestly if the game mechanics and some systems were perfected, this would be a perfect game. My enjoyment ended up not being as bothered about it though as I thought. The storytelling ended up just surpassing any issue I had with the games mechanics.

    ____

Game plays itself. AND Lot of weird un-used systems. Like the fire clock which a tutorial is given and then you never see it again other then first 30 minutes. Even the shopping system doesn't see any use. Buying and selling is essentially useless. You accumulate so much money and have nowhere to use it. Game autosell is introduced but you never really see loot to sell and nothing is worth buying as you accumulate so much good loot just wandering around. There's also these system of activating these camp areas with Ether deposits, yet again that system has no use. Equipment system even barely needs used. Your characters will auto-equip what is best for them when you're switching out classes. Sometimes adjustments may be needed but barely as the choices are usually pretty good.

There is an Affinity system with colonies.... Barely gets used and really doesn't serve a whole lot of purpose other then maybe a nice map of the area, affinity sorta just builds up quickly on its own without really a need to focus in on it. Also the rewards are very average so it doesn't make noticeable differences. Crafting system isn't really used, it's limited to gems mostly but it's sorta flip of the coin if you can craft something or not. There is no system to easily tell you where to go to pick up what your missing sooo it's sorta just luck if you run into what you need or not. The collectible soldier husk doesn't serve much of a purpose other then affinity building. You get a animation and sorta just move on. Supply drops arnt really all that important. You get bombarded by do much loot already that it serves nothing more as an inconvenience just for more average loot. There's this half baked passive monster system where the monsters out in the wild occasionally do something in their own to drop loot. It's weirdly under used and doesnt drop anything too useful. Sooooo many weird choice the developers made doing away with mechanics or not thinking them through.

Of course the combat returns of the came playing itself for the most part. The ability to switch characters is nice and honestly I do feel engaged with that at least. I definitely will lose battles if I don't direct the combat. Overall though this story is absolutely moving, incredible plot and character writing. I was moved to tears over a dozen times and sometimes left devestated with how good the writing was. The weird underused RPG systems though was a strange choice. Sometimes I felt like the game played itself and only left exploring and combat to me. This was fine but I felt more like I was just watching a show that I occasionally would fight in. I really lost that feeling of developing anything on my own. Seriously no crafting, too much loot, auto leveling up and not even a shopping system sorta made me feel like the game didn't want me to play but just watch and enjoy their nice story.

The Story catches your interest soon and the characters are well written, so that they get your attention very quickly I had never so much fun to see my characters growing and developing.

The hero characters you can unlock during the game by completing their missions are adding a lot to the plot itself and the development of your characters. These temporary party members bring not only a new class to master, their also bring a ton of variety thanks to the fact that every hero has their own unique personality.

The battle system is more passive and how successful you are, depends on the talents your characters have, the group composition and the classes you are currently use. Every class has different properties, although their belong to the same category. The motivation and fascination comes from experimenting with them.

The music is amazing. Especially the moebius theme is so exciting and gorgeous that it always feels like final boss time. The cutscenes are mostly emotional, but some of them are also funny too.

However there are some flaws which holds this game back. The battles becoming more and more repetitive. After you finally learn how to do an Ouroboros-Chain-Attack. Every battle has the same scheme and you always need to follow the same steps to win.

Another flaw is the final boss fight. This fight is to long and the first phase of it is only time consuming.

All in all it is a great game, which takes the Xenoblade Series up to a new level.

Changing to so many different classes keeps the gameplay unique and engaging, the 6 party members are all memorable Noah, Lanz, Eunie, Mio, Taion and Sena are all great characters, you can get a 7 member that's a Hero that gives you new classes for each hero but you can't control them. Now the gameplay mixes Xenoblade's 1 & 2's gameplay you get 3 actions of each its good balance. The environments are probably the best I've seen on the switch Monolith really knows how to make great maps, finally the story personally I thought main story was great and the ending nearly had me in tears, good to see that's games that can still do that to me, and I did all the sidequests and really enjoyed them , looking to see what Monolith works on next XCX switch port or XCX2 or maybe a new IP ahhhhhh Expand

I love this perfectly blends the combat and world-building of the first games. I was truly amazed of how all the hero and side quests have an extra layer of world-building and separate narrative, like the Witcher 3. I also loved the music. The voice acting and individual character arcs were also so well written.

There are so many black VAs in the English dub that totally mar the overall quality & experience of Xenoblade 3. I really can't stand them, and I know others feel the same. Overall the game is decent but not amazing.

Ultimately, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 represents the pinnacle of the series, both gameplay-wise and narratively. The characters are another highlight of the game. They are well-drawn, with only a small amount of formulaicness. [Issue#321]

I began XC3 knowing I'd enjoy it because of the fun I had with the previous games. What I didn't expect was for this to become one of my favorite JPRGs of all-time! With its engaging open world, engrossing combat system, loveable characters and gripping story, this game is a masterpiece of the genre! [Issue #62 – November/December 2022, p. 67]

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a clear improvement over its predecessors in almost every way. It streamlines so much and avoids past pitfalls, though there’s still work to be done in terms of balancing the difficulty. There’s a grounded story here with a solid cast of characters, and the basic plot is much easier to digest. The world design exceeds past efforts with ease, and the implementation of Hero Quests is a game changer. While the devs have done an admirable job making the battle system easier to grasp, it feels like the series has fully explored and exhausted these core combat mechanics, signaling it’s time for the next game to change things up. As a whole, it stands as a phenomenal RPG with a one-of-a-kind sense of exploration you can’t find anywhere else.
