For me, it's the story, cut scenes, and soundtrack. The cut scenes are really well executed and impact my play through of the game really well. Even though the English voice acting is a little wonky, some of the voice actors are really good. The story (No spoilers) is amazing. I haven't played the original Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but I can say that the story of the 2nd is awesome. And a big reason for the story are the cut scenes! Finally the soundtrack...oh gosh the soundtrack. Where to even begin? From "Counterattack" to "Incoming!!" to "Awakening" and beyond, the soundtrack was amazing. I love the electric guitar vibe you get from it, showing how tense the situation is. One of the most notable song is "Elysium of the Blue Sky" which is by far one of the most moving songs I have heard so far in a video game. I was at first a Zelda music fan, but after Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it blew Zelda themes out of the water for me! Also, about the combat. The battles are a lot better than the original Xenoblade Chronicles out of what I know, but even though I hear a lot of people complaining about it, the first thing I say, "it's a Role Playing Game, okay? Your going to need to give it some slack." but even though at first glance it's a big rip-off, it has a lot more in-depth strategy you need to be aware of. One of the main things is the blade combos with the chain attack. it gets quite confusing for beginners and I didn't really pay attention to that availability for my first 50 hours of playing, but if you do try it, it's very helpful. So yeah, the combat is a bit more well with the strategy than entertainment. It's really engrossing with how much I want to do in it! Overall, I think the game deserves a 10/10 in my opinion. Expand

HOWEVER, this game is on the quality side, and was very very surprised by it.
First of all the anime style fits the character very well, it's very japanese, in the trope, jokes, but this is what i call a good use of classic of the genre, it's really like playing those old PS1 RPG like FF9, where it's classic but yet emotional and effective.

The gameplay just keep getting better and better, the game does a tredemous job on giving you tutorial that progressively ease you into the game because there is A LOT things to digest, but it's done very slowly so you have time to integrate something then move on to the next level.

The overall design of the map, the gigantic world, oh **** me i wasn't READY for this, i knew this was the team thathelped breath of the wild map, but holy **** i didn't expect this level of immersion.
I will be honest, i played all the classic, i can't recall anything giving this sense of grandiose and scale at the level this game is doing.

The soundtrack? ****ing fantastic, this rival easily the likes of persona 5 and nier, with it's own genre and very much suited to whatever situation.

The cutscene are very cool, and will hype you up for the intense boss battles

there is so much to talk about, but let's just wrap this up and say this game offer a grandiose mix of massive exploration mixed with joyfull grinding(you can upgrade weapon/city/shops/Blades/ANYTHING)

Many RPG are trying to build some world building element, but usually they fall flat somewhere, usually very rigid element(cities, boring dungeon ect), lack of lore, lack of care in some area... in this game? nope. ****ing nailed it.

If you don't like old school JRPG, the classic feels of game like chrono trigger and FF7-9 however Pass this game on it's really not for you.

    I will keep this short but could go on and on in detail;

    1. HORRIBLE and I mean really horrible voices/voice acting - laughable 2. Ps2 quality graphics for a lot of the content (characters look good) 3. Map and quest finder is really confusing 4. Confusing... when I say confusing I mean it is simple in principle but it is like playing an onion. If you don't do this to make that

Xenoblade chronicles 2 is arguably one of the best JRPG's of 2017. Featuring a vibrant world, great story and colourful cast of characters with great characterisation and even though the game starts off simple, you'll find that a few hours in, the battle system is surprisingly varying and complex.

The game takes place from the perspective of main protagonist, Rex, a simple young boy who scavengers for a living. He is offered a job which gives him a payment of $100,000 and heads out on a flying ship where he discovers a blade who called herself Pyra. The two sets out on a journey to Elysium. That's the basic premise of the plot. Sound simple? well, it is. The story is very focused, yet I found it to have a very basic layout compared to the complex epic with twists and turns all over of Xenoblade chronicles. Rex was someone I found to be intolerable annoying at the start of the game. However, at about 10 hours in I started to warm up to Rex a bit and found him to be somewhat decent even if his northin Yorkshire accent can put me off. Pyra is just there. She lacks personality and only seems to serve as a plot device rather than an actual human. While she's one of the more interesting characters in this story, she failed to deliver in being engaging as a character in anyway. Coming with these simple, yet likeable characters also comes some surprisingly cringeworthy dialogue and voice acting. Yes, I get it, you called a man in his thirties elderly, calm down.. It's not that funny.

While the story is a major downgrade from the original masterpiece, the presentation of Xenoblade chronicles 2 is far superior. The art style is a gorgeous anime adventure wrapped inside of beautiful environments, locals and.. fan service? to explore. Additionally, the sound track is ear melting, it really lives up to the standards of the original unlike xenoblade chronicles X with some of my favourites being "counterattack" and "Elysium of the blue sky." But in all of xenoblade 2's beauty, there are some flaws. Some of the cutscenes have some very.. Awkward animations in them. When Rex started touching Pyra's chest I felt very awkward, it was like a less sexual version of hentai and when Pyra started Naruto running all the tension the scene could've had was broken by my laughter.

While the game isn't perfect, easily the best part of Xenoblade 2 is the new improved combat system. The party gauge has been revived from the grave I though xenoblade X had left it in and thank god is all I can say. You only have access to three arts in this game instead of eight and instead of being cool down based, you have to build up the power to use them by landing regular attacks. The new mechanic this time is the blades, characters like Pyra are known as blades and can be equipped to Rex at any time. Each blade has there own unique special art which can be built up to three different levels, meaning you have access to seven arts on each blade. All five party members can equip up to three blades at a time which you can switch between at will, leaving you with a total of 21 different arts at your disposal. The possibilities are truly endless. There are even more possibilities in battle I haven't even covered. I only have two issues with the new interface: The first one is that you have to be standing still to auto attack. It really breaks up the pace of the fights as at the start of the game you're just standing still waiting for a chance to press Y instead of moving around FEELING like you're actually doing something even when you're not. The other change I'm not happy with is the affinity chart which is a lot more cumbersome to use. Monolithsoft, don't fix what isn't broken.

In the end, xenoblade chronicles is a gorgeous, vibrant RPG adventure with a simple story and occasionally cringeworthy writing but extraordinarily fun and rewarding combat. If you like JRPG's then you'll love this, if you don't then you'll be somewhere between liking and hating it.

Mediocre Game with turtle paced story. Combat gets decent near the end and my god the English Dub sucks ass. Whoever gave the green light for the VA choices in this game should be shot and hanged.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying this review will have spoilers. I feel like I must provide parts of the story in this to express my feelings for this game.

I have never written a review for a game before. I never really had a connection to a game where I felt I would want to express my feeling of it to other people. This game has really changed this for me. I'll start by going into smaller details like graphics, gameplay, etc.

    Pros:

Graphics- This game's graphics are beautiful. For a huge game like this on a small console the game looks stunning. The vast amounts of terrain that you traverse gorgeous. Places like the Leftherian Archipelago look beautiful to stand upon and look down at the cloud sea, then travelling the Land of Morytha which is a polar opposite still is amazing. 10/10

Gameplay- The gameplay is very good. There is still a little to be desired in the early stages, having to rely on auto-attacks to charge up your arts can leave you a little bored, but when you progress, you will always be doing something in battle, instead of watching a battle take place. The specials are satisfying to pull off and the synergy with the elements and your party is fantastic to watch. 9/10

Blades: The vast amount of different combat styles that you unlock with your blades is incredible. Switching in battle from a sword to a polearm and even to dual wield scythes is really cool to expeience. Some weapons can be a bit boring to use, for instance hammers which have an incredibly low attack speed but hit very hard can really bore you, especially in a game where auto-attacks are necessary if you're not using Mythra. 9/10

Story: The story for me is the greatest story in any video game. Watching Rex evolve from a salvager that seemingly became the driver of the Aegis only by luck to the true Driver of the Aegis is very emotional. The game ends the first chapter on a high note and ends the final chapter on a sad note that really had me on the verge of tears. Knowing that Blades lose their memories when returning to their cores, watching Pyra and Mythra return to the core and being reawakened, not knowing anything about their past with Addam, Rex and the group is really, really heartbreaking. Her speech at the end is incredible, and knowing how much Rex really loved her and how she'll never really understand the true length of their adventure that got him to that point was really sad for me. 11/10

Soundtrack: The soundtrack for this game is as beautiful as the story. The ending soundtrack really did it for me, One Last You. Such a beautiful piece to end a story. This isn't the only forgettable song, but the one that really impacted me the most. 10/10

    Cons:

Cliches: As you can expect, this is a JRPG, so you're going to expect a lot of cliches. This game is full of them. There are many points in the game where you feel someone should die but you'll unlock a new form or do something that is supposed to be completely surprising but instead you knew that you would be saved. There are a few contrasts to this, when Pyra gives herself to the enemy and when the third sword disappears into thin air just to name a few. The cliiches aren't bad and do help the story, but if you don't like cliches then you won't become drawn into this game as much. 6/10

Voice Acting- I feel as if there was a huge disappointment with the voice acting. A lot of emotional moments were made to feel a little comical with the voice acting. However, Catrin-Mai Huw, the voice of Nia, really needs to be given props. Her voice acting was incredible and her you could really feel she was giving it her all in her lines. Rex's voice actor on the other hands isn't so good. It felt as if the same line was being repeated over and over again each time he needed to shout her name. Also, Arina Ii, the voice of Poppi, did an unbelievable job and by far the best voice actor in this game. Apart from those two exceptions, the voice acting wasn't very impressive, but if you're willing to put it aside for the incredible story, then you're sure to be rewarded. 4/10

Progression - Late game progression requires you to increase the field mastery of your blades. This can be especially frustrating as you may need to grind out at the end just to complete the story, kind of ruining the flow of the storyline. Although it is a nice idea, it can be frustrating if you just want to continue the story. 4/10

Coming from someone who's completed Zelda and played partially through Mario, I can say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is by far the Game of The Year for me. The story, graphics and cast of characters is something I have never seen another game perfectly achieve, unlike this one. I love this game, and I strongly urge you give this game a chance, even if you're not a fan of JRPGs. This game is GOTY material, and I hope Monolith continue the story in either DLC or a sequel, because this game deserves it.

    Final Verdict - A cliche 11/10

UPDATE AS OF 12/23/2017 Many things have been patched (Previous score was a 7).

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a good game riddled with technical issues and poor game design choices. Never have I played a game so frustrating, and yet found myself coming back, I would imagine that some do not ever want to play this game again. Let's dive into the issues of the game.

    The party AI:
The AI in this game, particularly the hero characters in your party, are extremely stupid. Tanks will try to run around enemies, and run off of cliffs. Healers will stand in environmental poison/fire and die; when you res them they don't move from the spot, and die again in the same spot. I've never played any previous Xenoblade games but if these issues were in the past games it should have been fixed by now.

    Hardware and Software Issues:
Nintendo advertises a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro Controller, which is cool and all, but it doesn’t work with the game undocked (THIS ISSUE HAS NOW BEEN FIXED AS OF 12/23/2017 VIA UPDATE). This game also has major issues rendering parts of the game particularly when you fast travel to certain areas, like Tora’s house.

    The UI map interface/quest design:
The map in this game, in its current state, is terrible. Not only is it hard to figure out where you are due to the enormous sub menu you must dig through, the quest indicators at the top provide little to no help, especially later in the game. The quest design from a gameplay perspective could also use a little tweaking; after hours of doing a chain quest only to find out the final part is gated behind your blades field skills seems like a low blow. Not only that but you have to hope you have the right field skills because if you don’t, it’s time to open core crystals for an hour looking for blades that have the skill you need to complete the quest. This is particularly annoying in a couple of the MAIN STORY quests, because you cannot progress until you have certain field skills and level them to certain levels. Thankfully there is an update that will happen for some of these issues (like the map UI) late December. (UI MAP HAS BEEN FIXED SLIGHTLY VIA UPDATE 12/23/2017).

    Save your game often:
There is a random crash which is happening to many people in the later chapters of the game. As many people know this game doesn’t have “save points”, like so many other JRPG’s do, to remind you to save. So, if you’re mid-dungeon and have to leave the game for whatever reason don’t forget to save. If you do forget to save you’ll find yourself wanting to flush this game down the toilet; have fun slogging through the previous hours of your life leading up to that dungeon all over again if you die at the boss or anything else.

Despite it’s many frustrating technical issues, and design choices, it still manages to be a good game from a story, and exploration perspective. It’s worth a try, but don’t be surprised if you put this game on the shelf and start playing something else for a while; especially after your tank runs off a cliff side just before you’re about to kill a monster for the first time.

This is literally one of the best switch games! Almost as good as the first! The only problem was the lip syncing and some of the voice acting. But the story and combat were outstanding!

Would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves Nintendo or JRPGs.

Xenoblade has a great world and really enjoyable story.. Wont ruin anything.. but take giant Titans, Waterworld concept, and a amazing game like Skies of Arcadia and you have Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

World exploration is great and there are chests hiding all over to find.

    Positives:
+ Graphics.. even though people talk about lower resolution.. world and design is great IMO.
+ Music.. I hear they are doing a Vinyl and its needed.
    + Main Character design
    + Fighting mechanics
+ Exploration ( lots of hidden goodies)
+ Crate system which is used to acquire party member.. in game currency .. not real money.

Not many negatives but here goes a few.
    - World doesn't open up for a few hours.. Might make some think game is not as great as it becomes with patience.
    - Some NPC character models are very generic and not unique like all main characters.
    - Some people may not enjoy the English voice overs.. the game contains a lot of voice acting and the good part is you can change to Japanese voice and use English subtitles. I just kept it English and enjoyed it completely.
    - Some issues with being able to locate certain quest objectives as the map system needs work. ( Dec 22nd 2017 will come the patch that supposedly fixes this and makes some nice improvements)

GRAB THIS TITLE if you like RPG's and JRPG's .. Its great

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 offers several unique elements that shape it into a great masterpiece. While Xenoblade Chronicles 2 does have a few flaws, these flaws get buried under the cohesive gameplay elements that Xenoblade offers.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a beautiful story that provides several plot twists. However, I would be doing injustice by spoiling any major story points. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has an amazing cast of characters that support the lead character Rex. Each character has different backgrounds however, despite these different backgrounds each character still stands out as unique and well developed. Additionally, watching several of these characters interact with each other provides humorous moments that never feel forced. The well-developed interactions with each character makes the audience care about the growth of each character. Each well rounded character rallies around the main character Rex while additionally, each supporting character has the same motive. These motives involve helping Rex get to Elysium in hopes that the “dying world” can be saved. Rex embarks on his quest to Elysium based off a promise he made with his Blade Pyra. The hero, Rex, faces several trials against enemies from Torna who generally overwhelm Rex. To overcome these enemies Rex must seek the “power to protect.” However, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has several additional themes that touch the audience. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 tells a story about the virtues of teamwork, love, beautiful memories, and the importance of friendship. The great characters and important virtuous themes allow Monolith Soft to string together an excellent story. This structurally hitched story creates a rollercoaster of emotions that correctly toys with the audience’s emotions. Unfortunately, some emotional scenes get completely ruined by poorly executed voice acting (I’ll go into detail about this later).
In terms of gameplay Xenoblade Chronicles 2 offers several hours of content. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 took the great gameplay components of the original Xenoblade Chronicles while additionally, adding different components. The introduction of blades allows the player to constantly mix and match different blades. Blades come in the form of core crystals. Additionally, players have access to rare blades which have special abilities that cannot be obtained from normal blades. However, obtaining rare blades come from a ridiculous chance of luck. For each core crystal is completely randomized (kinda sucks you can burn through several core crystals without a single rare blade). You can also dispatch blades on mercenary missions. These missions give you experience, gold, special items, and raise your mercenary groups ranking which allows you take on additional missions. These missions also help level up weaker blades which can then help you on your main mission. Additionally, you can upgrade your characters affinity through side quests. Side quests were featured in the original Xenoblade Chronicles and throughout the series. Side quests can grant you experience, gold, and SP which allows the player to upgrade the affinity of the main characters. Additionally, the player can upgrade blades and characters with certain key items. With the number of customization's, the player has tons of freedom customizing each character.
The voice acting. The biggest flaw in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Most of the time the voice acting never bothered me. However, I generally found myself hating Rex’s voice acting on emotional scenes. This truly bothers me especially when making direct comparisons to the original Xenoblade Chronicles voice actors. The voice acting in Xenoblade Chronicles packed emotion and dynamic flare. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 however, went backwards in voice acting. I will not go into greater detail about the voice acting (due to the character limit) however, the poor voice acting does carry over into combat (mainly the Ardanian Soldiers).
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has several plot, memorable soundtracks, and gameplay features that make it a great game. However, the game does have a few minor flaws. So why does this game deserve a 10/10? I found myself devoting 86~87 hours while completing a fair amount of side quests. However, I never found myself wanting to put my Nintendo Switch away. Instead I continued to play and progress throughout the story wanting to continue to watch the characters grow. I enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from start to end. Being a PC gamer, I found it hard to justify spending $60 on a brand-new game. However, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is worth every penny. I bought the special edition with the art book which cost $82. It was worth it. It's a great game.

The story is fantastic! it has such depth in it and definitely kept me coming back, you learn a lot about the characters as they come and go, there is plenty of unexpected twists with some unexpected comical moments, the world is massive, albeit linear in terms of progression it's not big a deal, you can fast travel whenever and where ever you like throughout the story so you can take a break and go salvaging to develop your rating with the cities you've visited or catch up on side quests or see further blade development and then revisit the story where you left of at a later date, the freedom is great and exactly what I wanted, no restrictions on having to do the story at certain points.
Let's talk about what I disliked... the combat system... it works but it's not that fun, after time it's just tedious and long, you can get from A-B in a few mins, but the battles in between can pad that travel time in excess of an hour if you take on all encounters, consumables aren't really clear.. lots of options but not a clear direction on which is ideally best.
The menu system is atrocious, too many buttons to press to get to where you want and the navigation can be frustrating, too many menus within menus.
Obtaining blades is so RNG it's ridiculous... rare cores don't guarantee a rare blade.... legendary cores don't guarantee one either... infact I got 0 rare blades from 3 legendary rolls, most of my blades came from common cores.
You can feel at times that game reaches it's technical limitations when visiting towns with high density of polygons and effects, the game's fps starts to slow and you notice it, not a big deal but worth mentioning.
Side quests are just fetch quests and a lot of back and fourth, the chain quests were annoying sending you to fetch and kill stuff all over the world several times over, there's no depth there.

I completed the game with 81 hours on the clock, I rushed the last 2 chapters because I just got bored of it, the games system started to be a grind and it didn't feel fun, the story became weird as like in a lot of JRPG's towards the end.. I did expect this but it disengaged me more than I anticipated. For me it felt like they tried to cram a lot of ideas into the game but a lot of the areas needed more refinement, it started to feel more like quantity over quality... when that feeling kicks in it I lose interest in the title.
I did stick it out, I enjoyed my time in the game, would I recommend it ? yes! is it perfect.. definitely not. This could be my first and last Xenoblade purchase.

There was no moment when I felt bored, or lost. All questions are answered, all story lines are resolved, we get some neat additions to the lore of the whole series. Without getting into spoilers I'll just say this - the whole sequence after the final boss made me cry like a baby.

The gameplay is magnificent. The battle system became easier, in comparison with the original, but in return it brought more variety to the fights by inclusion of combos and switchable blades. In addition to usual sidequests there blade quest, which are given to you either by your unique blades, or by unique blades in the world. Unlike the regular ones, these sidequests contain their own fully voiced cutscenes and subplots, which help to develop blades' characters. And I never had a need to grind. I was strong enough to overcome every challenge game threw at me by just playing at my own pace. It wasn't easy, but it also wasn't impossible and I never stopped just to grind couple levels, like in the end of the original XC.

The world is gorgeous. It's not as original and fascinating as Bionis, but still manages to impress. And like in the original exploration is rewarded. Locations are still highly atmospheric, and while the game uses a lot of old enemies, it present lots of new ones, who are not inferior in design. Also, like in the original you will encounter mini-bosses much stronger than you. Yes, Territorial Rotbart is in the game.

The music is awesome. I won't speak about it. Just go and listen. In my opinion soundtrack surpasses original game's.

But there are some technical problems. One time the game didn't end the battle, when all the enemies were dead, and I had to reboot it. Also while playing in docked mode textures are loading slowly when you fast-travel from titan to titan, and for couple seconds you may stand in the center of non-existent world. These are minor details, which won't ruin the fun you'll have with the game, but still I have to mention them. Also, no new game+. I know, that it would have been hard to realize, considering the opening chapter and blade-system, but still I miss this option.

So, this game is amazing. After the credits rolled I wanted to play it all again immediately, but sadly, there is no new game+, at least for the time being.

I have played Xendolade Chronicles 1, X, and now 2. So far, I would say I like this game the best of the entire 3. But I like some parts better in 1 and X better - like X had SKELLS (mechs) and huge pretty world. But 2 has a much better story and deeper character development.

Again the music is the best in the Nintendo Switch Library. I bought the special edition and downloaded/ripped the CD into the my phone to listen too everywhere. So the soundtrack is amazing. There is a Chrono Trigger song in the game but hope you all can find it!

Overall, if you looking for the best RPG game on the Switch this game is it! Because it has an amazing cast of characters, music, and story then you should definitely pick it up! The review that did this game justice is on Youtbue - GameXplain in his 25min review which I watched and said- "LOVED IT"! And that is exactly how I feel - I LOVE IT!

I have been waiting for a JRPG that has a beautiful world, awesome soundtrack and lovable characters. This is what final fantasy 15 should have been. I have been waiting for a game like this since final fantasy 10 and final fantasy 8. The romance, the story, the character development. The gorgeous animations and cut scenes (in game). The music gets me so pumped and the best part are the cut scenes in between play sessions and chapter finales.

I have never been so engrossed in a game before, feeling like i'm actually there. The mysteries behind the world and the addicting gameplay.

My review is not a professional one, I'm not going to break down everything one by one. I'll just say whats off the top of my mind and in my heart.. But the xeno team NAILED it with this release. GOD, please, make xenoblade chronicles 3 the same.

I believe i'm still close to the beginning and I already clocked in at 25 hours played. I'll tell you this though, take the time and learn the combat, cause once you get going, you get going! Once the combat makes sense, you really have a blast of a time, especially when they start introducing new stuff.

My rambling is just about done, there's no doubt about it, but for anyone interested in JRPG like final fantasy series. This is what final fantasy should have been, in terms of story and lovable character. I'll admit, I'm a guy and I'm a schmuck when it comes to ROMANCE in my JRPG. It's a element that you must have and XENOBLADE chronicles really nailed it with that one too. LOVE IT!

Now as I return to my TV, I cannot wait what in store for me as I venture through my adventure with my party of 6, maybe 8 soon? who knows, new characters come and go and new lands to explore. GOD I DONT WANT IT TO END!!!!

10/10 for me! best part about this is I can always do my side quests on the go too! The portability factor makes this a win win situation.

This review should weigh a lot, as I did not like xenoblade chronicles 1 and xenoblade chronicles X. So I am NOT a fanboy. This review is the real deal. Buy it now!

GAMEPLAY: Game barely handles 30fps. Every game mechanic is poorly tutorialized (despite the numerous tutorials) and horribly designed and has no respect for player's time.

Blades are basically like a cross between party members and equitable weapons. Your weapons come in the form of essentially 'spirits' which fight with you in combat. There are about 25 unique characters you can get, all with distinct personalities and storylines. The issue here is that except for the few you get as part of the main story, the process of acquisition of these characters is cancer. Rather than having awesome recruiting quests, finding these guys hidden throughout the world in awesome side quests... they are random drops from a consumable item. That's it. It's a gatcha system and the odds are not in your favor. It's ridiculous. They put what are essentially PARTY members behind these in-game loot boxes and it's absolutely awful. This alone would make me say that this game is unfinished garbage.

Blades have skills called Field Skills (like super strength and jumping really high). You might think, cool, that could change how I interact with the world! Wrong. All they are, are arbitrary skill requirements that act as keys for nodes throughout the world. Don't have some arbitrary skill at level 5 available? Too bad. It's just a way to arbitrarily lock you out without any real gameplay implications. Leveling these skills can also be a nightmare, depending on the blade. They are basically like HM's from Pokemon, except they have even less gameplay impact and you have to level them up. It's such a pointless and boring system that summarizes my opinion of this game: it lacks any kind of engaging or interesting gameplay outside of combat. It all boils down to grinding out these various "RPG" systems that have no real gameplay impact beyond resource acquisition and menu navigation. Missed opportunity doesn't even cover it. Field Skills shouldn't even be in the game.

This game has a myriad of stats and hundreds of trivial consumables that are just about worthless. You use those consumables through an asinine menu called the Pouch (which allows you to consume one consumable at a time for an hour). This system should be completely ignored, except for the fact that it's integral to character progression. Each character has favorite items, which are required to discover in order to progress certain abilities. The only way to figure this out is to GUESS their favorite item.

Quests are intensely uninteresting with about as much effort as basic MMO quests. Exploring the world is pointless. Despite being beautiful, it's filled with nothing. Since every single thing in this game is based off of RNG drops and lootbox systems, the most interesting thing you're going to find is a treasure chest with random loot in it. There is no meaningful way to explore the world (no skills that make navigating the world interesting as you progress). It's clear that this was what they attempted to do with Field Skills, but that's a complete failure. It's another open world game with nothing in it. The map is horrible for a 2D map and completely ridiculous for a 3D map. It in no way shows elevation or anything else you would expect in a game in 2017. The compass is wildly inaccurate. It's also filled with insanely high level trash mobs that make no sense and are completely ridiculous. I saw several level 70 bunny rabbits just hanging around outside the first town. Not only does this make exploring tedious, it also completely wrecks verisimilitude. You're telling me, I just killed this crazy "powerful" boss, but there is a bunny that can one shot me right outside?

Combat, while being over complicated, is very boring. Once you learn it, it's just the same combos/skill rotations every battle. No battle is different from any other battle. I never once, in 30 hours of gameplay, felt like I had to adjust tactically to the fight. It’s trivial, boring, and more about micro-managing your personal skills than actually engaging with an enemy or behaving tactically.

STORY: Story is hackneyed, cliché, tropy anime garbage. It’s pandering and cringy. From the really embarrassing character designs that just scream horny 14 year olds, to the fact that every character is as shallow as the character trope they inhabit, this story is just an embarrassing joke. I’m constantly rolling my eyes and I actively hate every character because of how pandering it is. There is nothing good about it. They didn’t even ATTEMPT to lip sync the characters to the English actors, either. Frankly, it’s one of the worst RPG stories with some of the most bogus hackneyed characters I’ve ever seen.

CONCLUSION: This is a generic JRPG, with pandering characters, overdesigned mechanics that lack any sort of tactical depth. It is filled with game design missteps and missed opportunities. It violates every concept of good game design and is overall a cancerous waste of time.

Now on to what changed my mind - boring, bad designed combat! Its basicall just same combat system as the one in Final Fantasy 12. You run around, and the combat pretty much is getting done by it self. Im usually not even looking on the screen, because it really doesnt matter in most of fights, they are either to easy or just imposibble to win. Oftenly they also piss me off with stupid crap - example:
Im on lvl 10, fight with couple of lvl 5 bunnies (hitting them with ridiculously big swords obviously made from cardboard because 1 hit takes 5 lvl lower than me rabbit 5% of its health so the fight drags on forever) and then out of nowhere flies a bird or runs some gorilla on lvl 78 (!?) and one shot kills me. FUN...not... really wtf.
I was hyped, after reading so much praise about the combat system, but really its bad for me atm. You cant just git gud when enemies oneshot you out of nowhere, and its not like I could run away either, because even when I try they will kill me from mile away.

Ill update this when I finish the game, but hell, this game doesnt deserve 10.
And for this stupid Tora character which I really start to hate with all my heart and this dumb infantile "mememe" or what the hell hes yelling all the time when fighting I would rate this even lower, but the game is actually good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

About 40 hrs in and really enjoying this JRPG.

The score is based on the fun Factor alone. My personal opinion with these monster RPG epics is that the game's longevity and lasting appeal will depend on if you enjoy the combat system that's been implemented, and in this case I very much do. **Pro's - good story, compelling characters, deep combat, massive world so far, min/max +

**Con's- Graphics are admittedly a little busted - but really only in handheld mode (plus once your eyes adjust its not as noticeable), I don't like the way the map functions, & people will probably miss out on this game because it takes as many hours as some full length titles just to open up

For me it was easy to see past the gripes, as again, my score is based on the fun I am having. Enjoy-

Resolution drops pretty frequently maybe due to hardware limit and the tremendous world design.

Other than that story and gameplay are both on point as an RPG game. Cutscenes are enjoyable with those animated faces and better figure animation although most of the quests, that characters are still standing and talking without some modifications for better presentation.

The battle system is over complicated. It throw dozens of mechanics at you, but ultimately none of them really makes much of a difference. The mechanics don't allow you to take out much higher level enemies and in the end, it's still a classic JRPG grind for levels to match the enemies

It's not made for everyone, and probably you won't get in a middle point, or you love it so hard, or you will hate it the most.
Since cinematics, ost and story plot are simply amazing (something that went bad in Xen.. X), the main point you have to care about is the gameplay, which is IMO hard to perform

Monolith helps you a lot among the game with full of tutorials (you can even be in a tutorial after 20 hours of playtime), then if you expend many time on it, you won't be afraid of the gameplay.
Something negative to say about the game, IMO is about the english dub which feels really uncomfortable and inaccurate. It just doesn't match with the characters and scenes. Anyway, you can solve this by downloading for free the japanese voices from the eShop.
After all, I love so f***ing hard this game, although i would like to rather it with 10, there are some silly problems like handheld screen resolution or frame rates at some points which makes me to be objective and rate it with 9.
Anyways, it's a JRPG master piece any RPG fan should give a try.

Probably the only flaw of this game is the voice acting. The voice acting doesn't match up with the way the characters move their mouths, one time Rex started talking for long after his mouth closed. This isn't big enough to take off any points from the review, this isn't noticeable unless you look for it. You can even "choose" your difficulty but choosing whether you want to use bonus exp from quests.

100/100 for me (more than that if I could). Open world with a lot to do, great story, great battle systems, great characters and characterization, fantastic music, excellent way of handling difficulty, good controls, and this game has left a positive impact on the Xenoblade Chronicles series. If none of this bothers you though Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a game with deep combat, inspiring environments, spectacular music, and many hours for you to play. The combat requires concentration, timing, and strategy in how you set up your blades and characters to fulfill different roles. The environments are expansive and colorful, full of collectibles, unique monsters and blades to find. Yasunori Mitsuda is back from Xenoblade 1 and in this respect the game is definitely on par with the original, you will want the soundtrack. I don't put a lot of stake in graphics, but the game looks great in docked mode and drops in resolution noticeably in handheld mode, but nothing else suffers any loss. If you never played any of the Xenoblades before this there is also no story connection so you can jump in here and not be lost. Over all a great game for the genre and the switch. Expand

I know there's been a lot of controversy around some of the character development, but honestly what doesn't offend people these days? Some of the characters have some pretty silly proportions, but it doesn't take away from the overall characters design. Outside of maybe xenogears, this is some of their best character development Monolith Soft has created so far.

The combat system is easily one of the best systems in any JRPG I've played. Very intricate with lots of different combo paths to choose from, and it can take a while to master. I do have some minor complaints, such as making it very difficult to change Poppi's element. This restricts what type of combos you can do early on until you progress further in the story. However, at the same time it encourages the player to slow down and evaluate how you can expand upon your combos, and overall improve your playstyle.

There's numerous open world side bosses and quests to complete, with a ton of rare blades to collect. I can see myself putting hours upon hours into this game just to "collect em all." Honestly, don't listen to the SJW tropes being offended over big breasts, get over yourself and enjoy an amazing JPRG.

Be sure to download the free Japanese voice pack. MUCH better than the English voices.

I have one minor complaint and that is that the resolution is a little low making the edges of pretty much anything other then the UI and menu's blocky.
Perhaps an update could fix this with more optimization however I doubt that will ever happen knowing Nintendo. The game itself runs fine at a constant and stable 30FPS.

The attention to detail is also very high close to the standards of BOTW.

Story and characters are very interesting and whenever something epic or sad happens I care for the characters which I cannot say about many games.

Acquisition of your blades is locked to a gatcha style randomized system meaning building a meaningful party setup as you play is all but impossible without massive amounts of grinding. Many areas and sidequests in the game are gated behind field skills tied to blades, and as blade acquisition is totally RNG, your ability to progress is heavily determined by your luck, or willingness to grind. Some of these field skill gates are in the middle or end of a side quest meaning you can potentially waste hours on content you can't actually finish yet.

Xenoblade II is still well worth a look if you can stomach it's glaring problems, but the further I've gotten into the game, the less I find myself wanting to pick it back up.

I'm about 30 hours into Xenoblade Chonicles 2, and I am having a blast thus far. As someone new to the "Xeno" series, but someone who enjoys JRPGs, this is a big win for me. I have a few gripes about the game that force me to take a couple points off (I think it's really an 8.5).

    Pros:

Really fun, engaging, combat system. That being said - it's a pretty complex battle system, with a lot of different chains and abilities that happen with the press of 5-6 buttons. You really have to be aware of your surroundings too. Want to tackle a strong enemy? Make sure you clear out the smaller ones before you engage or you risk dying after 10 minutes in battle because you aggro'd another enemy and they killed you.

I'm really enjoying the story so far. There's lot of typical JRPG cliche's, but I enjoy the character interaction and overall story so far.

The world is beautiful. Each titan is very unique, and even though we're confined to one titan (continent), we get the feel of a huge open world. Uraya has so many different, and awesome, color schemes working in it's favor. It really is a treat to run through the different titans and do some exploring.

There's a lot customization and progression options as well. I admit, it can get a bit confusing with all the different types of experience for leveling up your weapons, affinity charts, character level, etc. But it's got depth. Depth and different ways to diversify a gaming experience are so important for me.

    Cons:

The graphics are sub par. The art direction for the game is great, but I thought we'd have better graphics considering what I've seen already from the Switch.

The map - for a game where we're exploring so many different areas and following quests, the map becomes more of a hindrance than a tool. The only way to pull up the map is to say you're going to fast travel somewhere. The minimap is small and even if you bring up the large overlay, it's not very helpful. Some arrows on the minimap would be awesome for quest direction, because the waypoint system isn't that great. There are times where the waypoint would be in the middle of the screen but it'd say I was getting further away from it. It's a little weird.

English voice acting is hit or miss. I enjoy it for the most part, but there's some voicing that feels so out of place it ruins the immersion a little bit.

Would love to see a bit cleaner UI, or at least the ability to customize. There's a lot going on on the screen anytime you get into combat, which is expected. But I don't think they did a great job making key parts of the UI visible through all the chaos, such as HP bars or numbers not really catching the eye. There were several times I didn't realize one of my party members died until I consciously checked the side of the screen.

Sexualization of female blades, people, characters. I'm sick of seeing this in games, and we get a lot of it in XC2. Not only that, but there's so many cutscenes where it zooms in on a character's cleavage, or rear end. It's just not needed, or wanted.

Overall, I'm really enjoying Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I would love to see an update that makes the minimap a better tool and a bit of cleaning up the UI. I like the story, I like the customization, and I absolutely love the combat. There are many complaints of battles taking too long, but I'm okay with that based on the way the complex combat system works. I think if you're a fan of the series, or JRPGs in general, then this is for you.

Great job to the team that develop Xenoblade franchise you outdid yourself with this one! This game is definitely a reason alone to get a switch. I really hope this game gets better reviews because the trolls are real. Crazy how people are saying everything is trash the art, story and music!!! Like seriously are you kidding me? This is the best soundtrack I’ve ever heard and one of the best stories I’ve ever heard. The art is beautiful!!! Especially in the different worlds and let’s not even get to the cutscenes!!! Talk about beauty! I strongly I put this game on my top favorite games of all time. So for this game to be up my list with kingdom hearts and final fantasy 15 and persona 5 etc says a lot about this game. Expand

Cool ultra customizable party member, but actually getting the stuff you want to customize him as you want means grinding a minigame until the RNG gives you the thing you want, the list goes on and on. All in all this game is a let down as a member of the Xenoblade family. It's still good enough by it's own merit to be worth a purchase for a JRPG fan, but by bearing the Xenoblade name it'll inevitably have to be compared to the original Chronicles as well as X, and in that regard, it comes up short. Why play JRPG if you are in a hurry? Compared to the 1st game Xenoblade 2 puts more focus on the conflict between several empires each living on a giant titan. The scenery is huge and fantastic, the world lively, full of wonder and mystery. The blade-and-driver setting is very intriguing, the protagonists adorable. While the game isn't as strong as the first, its still freakin amazing. The battle system has been reweorked and is much better. The overworld and story aren't as good as XC1 or XCX (overworld), but they are still very well done. The only major problem right now is the voice acting/ cut scenes. They feel very weak/cringy at times.

Tl;dr : The game isn't as good as it should have been. It has a blatant disregard for the player's time and the mixed bag that's design/characters/story keeps it from being fun.

I was a fan of the first XBC, I never finished it cos it was wayyyyyy too long for me but the time I spent with the game was fun. XBC2 however seems to throw away most of what XBC was about. The world is still gorgeous but a lot less polished. The combat is still MMO-ish but you have a lot less to do in combat and a lot more useless mechanics. The story is, so far, run-of-the-mill Shounen **** Go here, do 3-4 fetch quests, watch a cutscene, do 3-4 more fetch quests, and I'm talking about main story quests, not optional side quests.

Lets add some examples so people reading this can decide if this game is for them or not.
I died around 30-40 times to roaming flying mobs that are higher level than me. The initial area has around 5 of them, with another area off the side where you have another 4. You puling mobs cos they look interesting and you wanna fight them? A flying mobs joins and kills you. You grind to become strong enough to kill it? You get the mob low and another on of the **** joins in.
Like, seriously, who is the idiot who designed the enemies in that world? I'm at the point where I don't want to explore because every area has 5 of these **** killing whenever I try to engage anything. It's like the game doesn't know if it wants me to explore the beautiful world they built, or it wants to **** me over for **** and giggles.

Story is boring so far, I'm around 12 hours in, it might get interesting but I doubt it. The main protagonist is a blank slate nice guy with no personality and an annoying voice. Pyra, the second protagonist is more interesting and better voiced but her design makes her impossible to take seriously. She looks like she not only doesn't belong to the world but was also designed by a 13 year old boy who wanted to make Tron porn. E.g. at night she glows, which makes her fake looking huge boobs shine with green neon lights. I have no idea who designed her, he obviously never saw boobs in his life, or why he decided that this is the feature he wants to emphasize, but whatever.

Lastly, the game's combat is, for the most part, boring. You need to time your skills to see the shining blue ring (still don't know what it does) and you need to combine skills for elemental trees (which is arguably the best part of combat) and you need to use skills to make enemies drop potions(?!?!?!?!) but the whole thing only comes together in boss fight where you have the time to build up combo chains. The usual combat isn't just a grindfest, it's a boring grindfest where you wait for icons to fill up. Also, did I mention you have 3 skills per character? Yup, you have 3 skills. 3 on each blade but the transition between blades is on cooldown as well. So you just wait...

Some of the griped I have with the game are not design flaws but issues that can be patched out (like the **** enemy placement) but a lot of it is part of the way the game was built. They want you to grind and they want you to wait and they don't want you to have any fun.
I'll try and finish it so I can get my money's worth but I don't recommend others play this.

Japanese Voice Over 7/10 (As expected, and that's why they made it available for free day one)

Now, the real question I have is this... Why the f*ck are Pyra's breasts so damn large if Rex doesn't even have a penis? (Sorry, the Rex penis part really struck me because well, usually in other games/animes, there is mystery allowed in the nether regions by using baggy clothes and whatnot... but this is clearly "NO ROOM FOR PENIS" crotch. So I wanted to know, if they made Rex practically androgynous, why did they make Pyra so clearly buxom? Pressure from Nier's 2B?)

On a more serious note, I do believe the folk at Monolith went a little overboard here on the fan service, and I was quite disappointed with this particular factor. Naturally, I got over it, but for a couple of minutes after her intro (I'm not one of those who watched the trailer), I drew a huge question mark on design choices. I mean, if you play, you'll understand. They're not just big, they're extremely big. They're bigger than Mai Shiranui's (for the oldest crowd); a little less than Taki's from Soul Calibur (for the old-sh crowd); and approximately the same size as Selvaria Bles' from Valkyria Chronicles... in fact, I'd say her whole body IS based on Selvaria, but with someone else's head.

That's all I wanted to say, and I mostly say it for both sides of that fence. If you like fan service, you'll get some here. If you hate it, or if you think JRPGs should get a little creative and quit the "for little boys" antics, you have been warned.

You can't go and compare this game to x, but seeing as it's been named a sequel to the original title, there's bound to be some comparing.

You will definitely find a lot more challenge in this game than you will in the original. The enemies are less merciful and even sometimes aim directly at showing you your place. If you think you're just going to speed through this game, you'd better think again. That level number matters and so does your equipment. Though, that can be said for both this and the original Xenoblade.

The combat is made infinitely more complex by the ability to cancel certain arts and cancel all auto attacks. There is also the ability to quickly charge some Blade Arts by simply abusing that cancel of auto attack. You coulld call this a glich, if you wanted, but with how the animation runs at times, I highly doubt they didn't know it was there. Sometimes, I'm also left to wonder how my CPU Team can still charge faster than I can, reaching tier three special far faster than should be possible otherwise.

Onto the skills themselves, your positioning once again feels extremely important for most skills. Some of it is also watching and making sure your team can follow-up to your set ups, which is telegraphed better than it ever was in the original Xenoblade, due to the fact that these skills have a tendency to be one blade and not any other, unless you want that. That's not to say that the AI is flawless, as sometimes it can go off and do something else entirely that what you planned for, but that's with everything that has them.

As for the element that's more or less absent entirely... there is no proper Armor System like there has been for the original and X. I don't understand this decision, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

I can't lie. I don't much care for Rex or Pyra's... well... "eye-catching" attire... It's fan service, but it's not the kind you want. However, it couldn't and didn't ruin the game for me.

Now for the Graphics, music, voice acting, etc.

The artists knew exactly what sort of art style they were going for, even as the art style seems to be implemented by a mix of several artists. It's anime as heckle and that's what you should go in expecting. The special effects used express this fervently, as well as make some environments more complete than they ever could have been without. Honestly, I can't see why people have a problem with the fact that this is the feel of the game, being that Xenoblade has always been anime-esque, but to each their own.

The music is INCREDIBLE. I can't praise it enough, nor get sick of it. I actually have several places in which I have left the system running merely to hear the music alone for an extended period of time. If there is any song at all that is "bad" in the entire ost, it's only because I favor others over it.

... Now for the ENGLISH voices. The guys over at Monolith knew how bad the English casting was. I say that because they put the infinitely more professional Japanese dub over as FREE Day One DLC.

I went in hoping that the rumors were false, but I found myself HATING Rex's English actor simply for the fact that he can not scream worth a cent. I sort of want to know why he got the roll of Rex, but there are plenty of other english voices that don't match their bodies or ages. So, I believe I can denominate the fact that it was simply the wrong people handling VA casting....

THANKFULLY, the Japanese Dub is better in nearly every way, making for a far more pleasing result. I say nearly, because you can't understand what they say in the after fight conversations unless you speak the language yourself and find yourself confused about the Japanese names used, for the most part. For example: Pyra is the red-hair heroine's English name, but Homura is her Japanese name.

As for the story, all I WILL to say is this: Monolith Soft has done it again and I LOVE them for it. 9/10

It's not a 10 because some characters are generic, while it has a nice combat style, it's not the best for me, and I hate the clumsy animations when they're talking in a cutscene, they're like robots, the only good thing about that is I don't look all the time to them, cause I'm busy reading the subtitles. Fantastic Job Monolith and Nintendo! I;ll be playing this for 100s of hours and I look forward to the DLC battle and Story modes forthcoming! :)

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
