Expand

    Un magnífico JRPG Japonés de lo mejor que he jugado en Switch y le he he más de 120 horas.
    Me encantó ahora estoy jugando el 1 y no descarto regular este ya que lo jugué en 2017.

    Originally, as a fan of the first Xenoblade, I was not sure if I should even play the game. It has some big flaws, like a slow start, bad tutorials, and horrible visual character designs, but the good parts of the game were so good, that despite all the issues that would completely ruin any other game, I was still able to enjoy this game.
    Gameplay-wise, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follows a similar philosophy as the first game, but with a lot of changes, that make the gameplay feel like a new experience.
    One of my main issues with JRPG’s is that a lot of times, you will need to grind, especially if you are focused on the main story. However, in this game, you almost never need to do that. Even if you are under-leveled it always feels like you have a fighting chance. Unlike the first game, where enemies that are more than 5 levels above you feel impossible to beat without special items, in this game you can be quite behind in levels compared to the enemy, but if you have developed your blade affinity charts and have ok items, it always feels like you have a chance, by making slight changes to your strategy.
    Furthermore, even if you are the type of player that tends to do every single side quest before fighting the first boss, you will not be significantly overleaved, as part of your exp is stored as bonus exp, that doesn’t add up to your actual exp, and can be consumed in inns. Essentially you have control over your level. Lastly, with the addition of challenge land with the DLC, the game truly tests your understanding of the mechanics, and you are encouraged to come out of your comfort zone and use different setups.
    Sound design: xc2 has probably my favourite soundtrack of any game. The music always matched up to the area you were travelling, or the boss you were trying to face. And then there are tracks like drifting souls, which are true masterpieces (speaking of drifting, Nintendo, pls fix joy-con drift). Lastly, although the voice acting starts off bad, and improves later on (the screaming of the main protagonist remains bad until the final 5 minutes of the game, unfortunately), the Bri’ish accents are refreshing, compared to the more commonly used American voice acting in other video games, and give help differentiate between the different races.
    Story: Without spoiling much, the story starts slowly, and has a lot of cringe scenes, which can be a turn off for a lot of players, focusing mainly on developing the characters. But by the end, I felt like this was one the best stories in any game, worthy of being a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles. While the first game focused mostly and developing the main character, xc2 does a great job of developing the story of all characters of your party, which made me much more interested in the story of the game, and how their characters arc concluded.
    Conclusion: This game has some flaws that can potentially push off a lot of people, but for my money, this is the best game I have ever played. I would recommend this game to fans of long JRPG’S, and especially people who like the first Xenoblade.

Buckle up because this is gonna be long...

    First of all, if you like or even love this game and haven’t played the original on switch then I HIGHLY request you do because maybe you’ll be able to understand where I’m coming from. (This review won’t have story spoilers for the original game).

    To start, combat in this game feels worse, you can no longer identify which enemies are hostile or docile until you get close and see if they attack you or not. In the first game there was a symbol that told you so.
    The game punishes you for moving around an enemy in combat as you can no longer auto attack while moving and not to mention that movement speed in combat is excruciatingly slow making the combat feel sluggish. Normal enemies are complete damage sponges and since they're normal enemies, they're not hard fights. So, I always found myself in easy, unengaging and long fights. however, the boss battles seem fine to me since they actually pose a challenge (sometimes).
    AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THAT STUPID GACHA MECHANIC! this game feels like its design to be a mobile game with the slow-paced progression and gacha mechanics.

    The story feels like a first draft accompanied by plot holes and unanswered questions. I would like to over them, but I want this to be a spoiler free review. Admittedly I didn’t beat the game (because I couldn’t stand the combat anymore) so I watched the rest of the games cutscenes on YouTube so I might be missing something important story wise, but I doubt it since I was over 80% done.

    To start, the protagonist (Rex) is actually the worst protagonist I have ever witness, he is a reckless baby that gets bailed out of trouble MULTIPLE TIMES by other cast members and instead of facing consequences or reflect on his behavior he gets rewarded by gaining more power to use in combat. Rex’s english voice acting is cringeworthy whenever he's in combat. it would've been nice if Rex's arc was about growing up and owning responsibility but nope, a baby biggening to end with no character arc whatsoever.
    Two more nit-picks about Rex, in combat he’ll sometimes UNIRONICALLY say “We’ll beat them, with the power of friendship!” Like come on. Also type in “bad character design” on google and guess who’ll show up.
    Nintendo must've thought they struck gold with that design considering its in Smash and BOTW.

    I also want to talk about the female lead Pyra for a bit. All I have to say is that she has a personality of a cup of distilled water and she’s the biggest waifu bait I’ve ever seen in a game and judging by the amount of Pyra profile pictures I see on YouTube comments and live streams I can say those people took it hook, line, and sinker.
    I won’t be talking about the over sexualization of women in this review but I what it to be known that because of it I can’t take the majority of the female cast seriously.

    So, what do I think this game did right? Some of the locations are pretty (only on docked mode) (and only some locations because a lot of them are drab looking). The OST is a banger, there are some side characters I actually like aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd that’s it. Not to mention the numerous annoyances I decided to leave out. If you learned anything from this review hopefully it’s that you get the original instead.

    Heavily flawed and incredibly frustrating at times.
    No actual Autosaves, one crash cost me 3 hours of progress.

    The music ranges from generic music that grates on the ears after a few hours to some good tracks but mostly generic JRPG music.
    The graphics are blurry, it cant keep a constant resolution always changing every few seconds which gets annoying really fast, the game looks best on the small switch screen(not the oled model, there the blur is way more noticable).
    The "localization" is bad, not Fire Emblem Fates level of bad but still bad, they changed many texts, names and stuff from the original japanese, some people don't mind but i prefer an experience that is as close as possible to the way the devs/writers originally intended, playing with Japanese voices gets rid of the horrible british accents that plague the characters and voices that absolutely dont fit the characters(Rex especially) but the texts don't line up with what is actually being said a lot of times which is frustrating in itself.
    The game is grindy as **** some people like it but for me it's too much.

    Get the game for 30 or less if you are interested, it's not worth even a cent more than that

    The second little probleme is some affinity charts for some blades. Those are really rare ocations like Perun or Dagas but still a little anoing because you have to make good action wich is a very ambigus hint or a special quest wich is not bothering when you're on the post game but when you're first rare blade is dagas it can get a little frustrating to make.
    But overall the game has a very deep and intresting story. It has some funny and emotional moments wich makes you connect with the characters. The world is pretty big and vast to explorate every mistery and compltete some intresting side quests. Not to forget the amazin personalaty of the principal charaters like Zeke, Morag or even Rex. throug the story you can see the evolution of those characters and undestand them by their back story. Plus the principal characters are not the only ones who got a personality. Every blade has it's own personality and the game let you intercat with them so you can know better about them and increase your affinity like Electra wich is a crybaby.
    I'm looking fordward fo Xenoblade Chronicles 3 hopping that they fix those little issues and the story would be as amazing as this one.

    This game is a titan of a game, pun intended. In my opinion, this AAA title contains the best Nintendo exclusive story on the switch. There’s a good chance it’ll remain that way until the end of the switch’s lifetime. Maybe it’s sequel will outdo it. I hadn’t played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, but you don’t need to in order to enjoy the game because the stories are separate.

I hadn’t played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, but you don’t need to in order to enjoy the game because the stories are separate.

    Pros
    Pretty environments
    Likeable characters
    Unique strategy elements
    Rewards for exploring the depths of the game
    Players that like the game have the option to purchase the Torna DLC, which is arguably the best DLC available on Switch

    Cons
    The game suffers from being overcomplicated
    Suggestive themes can get distracting
    Lower rated blades have a painfully bland design
    Not all blades are created equal

    The graphics are enjoyable, but some things, like the menu, won’t age well. There are two menus that players work with, and it can be confusing to navigate. Additionally, there are too many characters with suggestive themes. To the point where it’s just gross. I can live with characters like Pyra and Mythra. I can’t, I just cannot stand some of them because the focus is on the suggestive theme—and it doesn’t match the personality of the character at all. The good news there is that you aren’t forced to use them. It's just a shame to me to find a rare blade with a relatively cool design, only to realize that I can’t enjoy it. Going along with blade design, only rare (5 star) blades have a unique look. 1-4 star blades might have a unique name, but have an identical color scheme, so when you get a new blade, most of the time, it will look identical to all your other ones.

    The other problem with this game is how oddly complicated it is. It wouldn’t be hard to learn if the game would just tell it to you straight. But it doesn’t. It gives you one time to learn a tutorial (where they throw a bunch of information at you and say here it all is, remember it) and then it moves on. It keeps introducing new game mechanics throughout the game, each time putting an emphasis on it and telling you why it’s important. You go through a good portion of the game like this. Then, you’re expected to remember it all. Can’t remember? You have to locate a hint merchant and buy the right hint off of them. You can get around this issue by using the internet.

    Battle requires you to press buttons just before an attack lands. Different blades have different abilities to aid Rex and his companions. I’m disappointed that there is a best “healer”, “tank”, etc. It just means that there needed to be a little more love put into the other rare blades.

    Like many other JRPGs of the same genre, characters feel the need to shout out the name of the move as they’re doing it. It’s weird, but I don’t mind it. You can count on Nintendo to add fun resource gathering methods. There are secret areas to find, rare blades to collect, and skill trees to complete. If you’re a person who likes checklists, this game will make your day.

    Make no mistake, this is a big game. If you’re like me, and you like a good, uplifting storyline, then you’ll like this game. The graphics are passable, it was only bothersome to me on a personal level. As long as you understand what’s going on in the game and what you can actually do, you’ll get the most out of your experience. It really deserves a higher score as it's a great game, but it is inhibited by unnecessary quirks.
    Tips:
    In-game vocabulary gets confusing (don’t even get me started on the phrase “attack canceling”). Drivers are humans, blades are weapons with spirits in them—or something like that lol. Drivers and blades level up differently. Blades level up as you use their various abilities. And to increase a blade’s skill tree, you have to do certain things as specified on the skill you want to upgrade. I went through half the game not knowing how important it was to use a party gauge attack to end fights for better loot and additional experience. I didn’t know until the end how to upgrade blades which meant a lot of meaningless grind at the very end of the game. And I also didn’t know that the orbs showed up for elemental combos on the upper part of the screen, hinting which blade to utilize next, which is a big part of strategy as well. Hope that saves at least one newcomer’s time. Not by minutes, but by hours.

    Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an epic story that has me hooked, I love the characters and I also love the English VA, this game is a DEEP JRPG that will satisfy fans of the genre, but be warned this game is DEEP, it took me 20 hours to really understand the combat and wow, the combat system is stunningly complicated but once you have fully grasped Blade/Driver Fusion combos and Chain Combos you are given control of a truly engaging, satisfying and tactical combat system that is very unique, it is worth playing this game and sticking with it just for the combat system alone imo.

    Once you do understand the combat it is actually rather easy as all its systems become second nature, I think now the combat system has been fully sussed out it wont be as hard for newcomers as it was for people who played the game day one, it goes to show how good it really is as it took me so long to learn it but now I have, it almost becomes second nature.

    This game is just full of systems and complexity which means I wouldn't recommend this for a casual gamer, this game takes a lot of dedication to really be able to see its true potential. Do not listen to anyone that has put less than 20 hours into this game and while that may sound crazy, it really is true. this game is truly one of the most involved games I have ever played but it is truly satisfying.

    XC2 is a special game and is not a game I will forget easily.

    After 150 hours of gameplay, I figured it's time to write a review for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

    Sadly, XC2's story failed to amaze me. It was a good emotional ride; there were goosebumps here and there but there was nothing that made me think that the story is exceptional. The pace was not good in my opinion, and the overall tone of the game is a bit inconsistent with the narrative.

    The world was very good, but it's not as good as the world of XC1 which was incredible.

    Most of the characters have enough quirks to be memorable... but I didn't appreciate the anime character archetypes that were a bit too cheesy at times.

    I don't like Rex as much as I like Shulk from XC1. To me, Rex is a stale, typical Shonen protagonist fighting against the odds with the power of friendship, recklessness, stubbornness, naivety, and optimism. There is a sweet spot in every character that lies between ideal and flawed. Rex is a character more skewed towards the former, which I didn't like simply because I couldn't connect with his struggle. His struggles were only ever fleshed out whenever the "boy meets girl" theme comes into place. I loved how Shulk reacted to the things around him the same way me and other people normally would; Rex lacked that authenticity. Also... Shulk's growth with the monado is incorporated in the gameplay which I think is very cool.

    I love the music! I really hated the background music for two locations but aside from that, the music in this game are EARGASMIC.

    The gameplay is nice. I just hate the grind because some of my experience with it are ridiculous... jump from a high point, jump 6,000 times, walk a lot. What the heck, game? Can't you think of something else to do? (I grinded hours to unlocked all blades, except for the ones you can get from new game plus.)

    Overall, I think the game is mediocre because of the emotional but average Shonen story and the main character BUT...
    The sheer amount of work put into this game is amazing. There is a ton of side content in the base game, and I am looking forward to playing the DLC. If you love JRPGs, you should not miss this one. It's great, but it's far from being a masterpiece. I don't hate the game, I was just a tad disappointed with the main character, the grind, and the story; the most important RPG elements to me... I felt like they could've been executed a lot better.

    I thought the English dub was horrible in general... but Japanese voice DLC fixed it for me, at least there's that.

Buckle up cause this is gonna be long...

    First of all... if you love this game and haven’t played the original on switch then I HIGHLY REQUEST you do because maybe you’ll be able to understand where I’m coming from. (This review won’t have story spoilers for the original game). To start, combat in this game is objectively worse, you can no longer identify which enemies are hostile or docile until you get close and see if they attack you or not. In the first game there was a symbol that told you so.
    The game punishes you for moving around a enemy in combat as you can no longer auto attack while moving unlike the first game, making the combat feel sluggish.
    The moves you manually use in XBC games are called “Arts”. In the first game you had 8+ different Arts and you can use them immediately at the start of any battle. In XBC2 you can only use three different Arts at a time and you can’t use them immediately until dozens of hours into the game so you can unlock the ability to do so, making the combat feel restricted.
    Normal battles take WAY longer than the original and since the stat boosts from leveling up are not as impactful as the original, it makes the game more grindy and time consuming. So in short, the combat is more sluggish, restricted and grindy. The story feels like a first draft accompanied by plot holes and unanswered questions unlike the first game which tied everything together perfectly an satisfactorily. Admittedly I didn’t beat the game (because I couldn’t stand the combat anymore) so I watched the rest of the games cutscenes on YouTube so I might be missing something important story wise but I doubt it since I was over 80% done. To start, the protagonist (Rex) is awful, he is a reckless baby that gets bailed out of trouble MULTIPLE TIMES by other cast members and instead of facing consequences or reflect on his behavior he gets rewarded by gaining more power to use in combat unlike Shulk in XBC1 who takes great responsibility of his power and considers the consequences before using said power. Rex’s voice acting is cringeworthy whenever he lets out a battle cry and in one cutscene he was talking somewhat calmly but was flailing and panicking in the cutscene ALSO unlike Shulk who’s voice acting is AMAZING! Two more things about Rex, in combat he’ll sometimes UNIRONICALLY say “We’ll beat them, with the power of friendship!”. Also type in “bad character design” on google and guess who’ll show up. I also want to talk about the female lead Pyra. (Skip ahead a paragraph to avoid vague/minor spoilers) Moving onto the main villain of the game... he was supposed to be a “twist villain” but it was so predictable for me, and later on Rex and friends asks why he’s doing the things he’s doing he says something along the lines of bECaUse iM tHe bAD GuY cAuSE Im bORn BAd BecAuSE IM ThE BAD GUUUUUUUUUY!
    The main villain in the first game was good because they actually had logic and reasoning to go with their plan rather than blind hatred. One of the other villains of the game is too edgy it hurts. Speaking of the same villain, He could’ve killed Rex and any other form of opposition in quick work but just chooses not to until it’s too late because he let Rex get too powerful.

    In short, I don’t like the villains... and that also goes for a TON of the side characters. So what do I think this game did right? Some of the locations are pretty and jaw dropping (only on docked mode) (and only some locations because a lot of them are drab looking). The OST is a banger, there are some characters I actually like aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd that’s it. If you learned anything from this review hopefully it’s that you get the original instead.

    At some point it all clicks and honestly turns into a pretty epic game.

    Small things set it back someone and become an annoyance but those who stick with it will overcome all obstacles.

The story it's not as mind-blowing as the first Xenoblade, mainly because it's more focused on an emotional story and charming characters. It's tough for me to decide which one is better, but I think thats a good indicator of how good these games are. Definitively worth a shot!

While certainly there, the game is a lot more than that. The combat is incredibly deep, though it takes a while to understand everything, so I suggest looking up a guide for understanding the combat. The story is incredible, with one of the best casts I've ever seen in a JRPG with incredibly well written likable characters and tons of crazy plot twists to keep to engaged. The gameplay, while is a bit bloating mechanics wise, is also really fun. The game is massive, with an insane number of things to do and minigames to take part in along with a gigantic world to explore. The music is also god-like and one of the best in gaming, surpassing even the first xenoblade chronicles. However, the game does have some flaws. The beginning is very rough and tutorial heavy, with all of the combat mechanics not unlocking until early chapter 4. (the game has 10 chapters) The game also has annoying gacha mechanics. Luckily you cannot pay for more rolls with real money, (unless you count the free rolls you get with the DLC, which includes tons of other things) so that's a plus. It also allows every new playthrough to be unique with the different blades you get, (basically JoJo Stands or Persona) which determine movesets and such. However, if you are going for 100%, you will need EVERY unique blade, which is hell to get. Another issue is the field skills, which arbitrarily lock off locations (including story-required areas) until you get the specified amount of field skills, which require a lot of tedious grinding and maybe a bit (or a lot of) luck. The last issue is that for about half the game you have an incomplete team with one of the characters part of this small 3-person team being a gimmick character that a lot of people don't like who requires a whole bunch of grinding to make good. You finally get your forth party member at the beginning of Chapter 5, though they don't stay around too often due to plot (constantly leaving and joining the party during Chapters 4, 5, and 6) and don't permanently join you until halfway through Chapter 6. The fifth and final party member is even worse, not joining until the beginning of Chapter 6, a little more than halfway through the game. Other than those small issues the game is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it for any fans of RPGs, open world games, or anime. The lore is also super interesting and I highly recommend looking into it if your interested. It shows a whole new perspective on the game you'll never notice otherwise. 8.7/10. Expand

Though, subpar voice direction, unnecessarily sexualised character designs, and obtuse and confusing tutorials keep this from being one of the greats. What I think is most important to stress (apart from the gripes above) is that this isn't a game for people with a hatred of anime tropes and that this certainly isn't the easiest game to get into; the battle system refuses to open up completely until about a dozen hours in and you're much better off watching a video explaining the combat than trying to figure out what to do from the limited and downright infuriating tutorials that the game provides.

    Generally, the game gets better as you continue on, with voice direction improving and the battle system becoming more complex for those who wish to engage with all aspects of it. The ending is fantastic and the narrative feels completely resolved by the time the credits roll. Suspend your disbelief, give the game some patience, and iron out any problems you have with the battle system early on and you'll have a great time with this game.

The mechanic also comes with a great perk in the new overkill feature, which curbs xenoblade chronicles' 1's only notable flaw in forcing exploration for the sake of not having to grind, but also makes the game a bit on the easy side. Overall, I see this as a bit of a sidegrade, and the series retains a similar level of quality here to before.

    However, the game falls flat on its face in the story, a core element of JRPGs, and delivers a story I'd expect to see out of only the most horrendous anime the world has to offer. It truly feels as though you're playing through something like Sword Art Online, and I detest most of what this story has to offer. There are still some enjoyable characters, but just as many irritating, annoying ones on top of it. Overall, I understand the shift in style, but I feel it to be a bit of a betrayal to those who fell in love with the well-crafted story and incredible characters of the first game. The game's still enjoyable despite this, thankfully, but it serves as a major hit to the game's quality.

    - Tutorial heavy;
    - Combat system takes a really long time to get into it;
    - Combat takes extremely long, even against weaker enemies;
    - Some game mechanics are not explained in game;
    - Excessive use of grinding in almost every aspect of the game;
    - Getting rare blades is extremely luck dependant, some blades, have a 1/1000 spawn chance;
    - Terrible voice sync, but the voice actors did a great job;
    - The line: you win the boss fight, just to lose in the cutscene right after it, happens too many times and gets really frustrating/annoying later on;
    - Some graphics elements could be better;
    - The textures takes some time to load randomly.

    One of the best aRPG and best game in terms of story and OST in this generation.

    My gametime now is 244 hours and i complete this game twice and do mostly of sidequests, battle system is still entertaining. Can't wait for DLC.

    The only bad thing in that game is bad optimisation.

    Если ставить лоб в лоб все Xeno-игры, то Xenoblade 2 уже практически может встать в ряд с такими монстрами, как Xenogears и Xenosaga.

    Для тех, кто играл только в Xenoblade и Xenoblade X, эта часть будет в чем то даже хуже них, но для поклонников MonolithSoft, которые застали первые части этой серии, Xenoblade 2 будет просто праздником:

    Xenoblade 2 - это игра, в которой гора фансервиса и дебильных моментов стоят бок о бок с глубочайшим и мрачным сюжетом, который затрагивает не только множество стран, но и отсылает на события, которые происходили много сотен лет назад.

    В которой совершенно невменяемое обучение и интерфейс + огромное перенасыщение механиками, но глубочайшая боевая система и большое разнообразие тех самых механик.

    Если объективно сравнить её с оригинальным Ксеноблейдом, то в этой части просто отвратительная оптимизация, вызванная в главную очередь тем, что большинство программистов из самой MonolithSoft в то время работали надо Зельдой.
    Так же в первой половине игры очень сильное перенасыщение фансервисом. Понятное дело, что разработчики таким образом хотели создать огромную разницу между первой и второй половиной игры, но они с этим переборщили.

    Зато в этой части отличные основные персонажи и великолепные злодеи
    (а так же опять перебор с пасхалками на Xenogears), за исключение двух главных героев в лице Рекса и Пайры, они отвратительны и являются главным минусом игры.

    Так же в игре присутствует несколько стран(в английской озвучке у всех разный акцент даже), даже политота имеется, все в лучших традициях Ксеногирс и Ксеносаги.

    Сама игра очень сильно проходится по темам войны и жертв этой самой войны, экспериментов над людьми, ущемление церковью, а так же многое другое.

    Для фанатов MonolithSoft это определённо будет лучшей и их игрой со времён первого эпизода Ксеносаги.

    На данный момент в игре наиграно 165 часов, игра пройдена 2 раза и до сих пор не надоедает.

    Одна из лучших игр современности и определенно одна из лучших Action-RPG игр.

    Un univers riche, de grande zone riche en vie avec une exploration présente et récompensée. Le système de combat riche en possibilités avec toutes les associations de lame, d'éléments et des possibilités qu'offre le jeu. Des personnages riches et attachant qu'on découvre progressivement tout au long de l'histoire, d'où le final grandiose. Et une bande-son exceptionnelle. La difficulté est bien dosée tout au long du jeu avec parfois quelque pic intéressant.

    Les seuls défauts qui m'ont vraiment gêné, c'est la technique très faiblarde lors des chargements, notamment après des TP ou dans certaine phase d'action même en cinématique avec l'aliasing et du flou sévère. Les quêtes annexes sont aussi pas toute très intéressantes et nécessite parfois de se téléporter de multiples fois à droite à gauche. Elle représente également une grande partie du jeu, y en vraiment beaucoup, c'est bien si elle en valait tout le coup. Les animations sont ultra basiques et robotique et parfois des soucis de le doublage parfois mal joués pour les voix en anglais.

    Dans tous les cas, si les J-RPG ne vous fait pas peur, c'est un jeu à faire et que je recommande fortement.

    Many people may disagree when I say this but this game is a masterpiece that is better than the first game in almost every way. The story could be a little better and maybe some designs could be less "shut off the TV when mom comes in the room", but these are flaws that I can very easily overlook. Despite a weaker story than the first game, there's still plenty of great moments. Despite a weaker story than the first game, there's still plenty of great moments. The Titans are beautiful landscapes to walk around on and do things. Side Quests can be repetitive but who cares about that when they give you a reason to explore the game more and fight more of its enemies. There also genuinely good side quests, like the Blade Quests that give you insight on some of the optional characters in the game. The combat is amazing. I can be hard to wrap your head around at first but its really deep and some of the super bosses can be really hard but satisfying to topple. I consider it one of the 2017 Switch greats along with Breath Of The Wild and Odyssey. Pick it up if you haven't. You wont regret it. Expand

The game has a Pokemon Esque mechanic where you bond with these sentient weapons called Blades that you collect and then use in combat. At the start, it is so exhilarating to find out what new Blade you're going to get. Unfortunately, though, you begin to get a lot of repeats in the common rarity ones and this once cool and fresh mechanic becomes extremely repetitive. Also, there were some inappropriate things that one character did that I was not expecting. These moments were few and far between but when they happened, they were very jarring. I have no problem with games with mature themes, but this was different and came without a warning. These, however, are just personal preferences, and they don't necessarily mean the game is bad because I know there are plenty of people out there who are not bothered by this. In the end, this game is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece that had its hooks in me within the first 30 minutes. Monolith really gave it their all when making this game and it shows, and I'm extremely looking forward to what they are releasing next. Expand

    - To find items required for a quest you have run around and guess where they are
    - Level grind level grind level grind; as soon as the 2nd chapter starts, you have to grind from level 15 to level 35 to progress further. Why???
    - Only one save slot. Why?
    - Random blades -> lootbox mechanics bad. Get the same blade 6 times? Yes. Exactly what I want to see in a game (no it's not).
    - Most battles are boring because you're either level above so you kill the foes easily or the foes are level above so you run away which is not fun. When the level is close or the same then it's not boring but it happens rarely

    Overall the two biggest problems are: poor tech (blurry, stutter) and level grind. Both need to be solved for this game to be even considered remotely good. Perhaps SwitchPro will fix the tech side but it's too late anyway for a 2017 game. It should be good when it's released and not 4 years later. Level grind is awful, it needs to go away. From all games, not from just this one!

    Xenoblade 2 is simply "ok" at almost everything it tries to do and is bogged down by convoluted and tedious systems. It's soundtrack is the only thing I would call a standout (Torigoth Day is a particularly nice song). While not a bad game, it does not, as a whole, do anything remarkable enough to warrant the 60 hour time-sink.

At first I didn't understand the combat that much so I thought every enemy was a "bullet sponge", every enemy felt like a boss battle and I hated that, then I decided to watch a speedrun up to the point I had played the game just to see how the very best players played the game and it was the best decision I ever made because the speedrunner actually explained how to play the game correctly and I started loving the game after that. It's tutorials are awful and endless, but what really killed it for me was the characters and story. I may have eventually enjoyed combat if I had stuck with it long enough, but I was unable to watch (or listen to) the horrid character designs that looked like they were made by a horny 13 year old and unable to listen to voice acting so bad I'm convinced someone got conned by the actors who did it.

    As a usual fan of JRPGs, I was massively disappointed.

    - Deep and complex RPG system. For casual players it doesn't require any optimization, but if you're playing on harder difficulties, you might need to spend time tweaking all the buffs, and skill settings, and Blade affinities, etc. There are a lot of challenging enemies that can test your setup and skills.
    - Fun and diverse battle system.

    Cons:
    - Boring story. What's worse - it is a long and boring story. A very generic JRPG plot stretched out way too much. For the game that is so imaginative with it's design, the plot is so unoriginal, it's a crime against Xeno-series fans. At least it was cool to look for plot connections with XC1.
    - Questionable character design. I'm Ok with a step back towards more childish anime-style, but why did they make some female characters with such a huge breasts and exposing outfits? Those are distracting and break the immersion.
    - Field skills everywhere. Field skills were Ok in Xenoblade Chronicles X - the requirements to open containers and do some actions were not as often and added a bit more depths to exploration. In XC2 field skills checks are EVERYWHERE. Almost every side-quest, and some progression in main story quests are locked behind a multitude of field skill requirements that can be a pain in the ass to fulfill. But the worst thing, that probably is my main grudge against this game, is MICROMANAGEMENT. It is ridiculous, how much micromanagement with blade switching you have to do in this game just to match field skill requirements with the proper configuration of Blades. Some quests and locations require you to do the same thing several times in a row just because of several field skill checks one after another. Same mind-numbing steps: go to the menu, spend several minutes looking for a Blade with a proper field skill, assign it to the character, repeat with other field skills, go back from the menu, pass the check, then repeat the same steps for the next check. Seriously, out of more than 100 hours spent in this game, I probably spent 5-10 hours just on Blade micromanagement alone.

    Overall, this game was fun to play for a while just for its battle system and visuals. But boring story hours spent on mechanical Blade micromanagement made it unbearable after a while.

This was the RPG for my switch that i was most excited about and after over 120 hours in, i can say that the game has so much charm but just falls to pieces under its ridiculously messy systems. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 starts off and really wows you with the sheer size of the titans and the interesting storyline. For a majority of the game, the storyline remains decent though a tad predictable. As you start to approach Chapter 7, things start to fall flat and the tedium really starts to weigh you down. The battle system (once you finally figure out how it all works - probably with the help of a youtube video or 2) starts to feel a bit boring. This sounds crazy as it really shouldn't be since you're constantly busy doing driver combos, blade combos, fusion combos, breaking elementals and moving around to flank enemies. However, it turns into a wash/rinse/repeat process that drags on as you consistently run into enemies with tons of health even though they may be several levels beneath you. To mix it up, get ready for bosses and enemies who do things like 'burst damage' with no obvious heads up or information that this damage is happening differently from normal damage - nor a tutorial on what it is and how to stop it. Imagine my surprise when i kept dying and had to consult the internet to figure out why i suddenly went from winning a battle to dying in about 5 seconds. This continues with bosses that start to interrupt your combos by sealing you in the most wonderfully inconvenient of times. There are also weird glitches such as enemies/yourself falling to a lower level and becoming unreachable, hard won rare items falling off the side of structures only to be uncollectable as they've landed in water or on a ledge that is hard to reach (not to mention, they only last onscreen for a short period of time so you'd better be close enough to reach them somehow).

    The weapon collection/blade system is a gatcha game (albeit, no real money is needed) that feels out of place and unhelpful to the purpose of gaining new blades. Locking them behind subquests would at least have been more logical as the several sidequests in that vein work well and provide backgrounds for each blade. Transfering them amongst team members is complicated and limited. Which makes it hard to really enjoy blade collecting.

    The map is awful. Figuring out where you need to go (for side quests in particular) is just brutal. I cannot stress this issue enough. The mapping system in this game is atrocious.

    The UI is so cumbersome and unfriendly. Managing blades and then needing to go back into the character select menu to equip them made no sense to me. Nor did the million different items with near identical effects that could be bought from the many stores (yay - two different things that reduce damage by 1.0%! thanks?). Nor did the various key items that give bonuses when you get them but seem to be trivial in application (increasing my item collection reach by 50cm? That sounds tiny - and you're right it is! I still need to be on top of an item to pick it up!).

    I was so saddened by how messy this game was and am praying xenoblade chronicles definitive edition is not burdened with the same issues. Really saddened by how this turned out.

Managing all the different system for each of your characters can be enjoyable at times, but more often than not felt like busywork. Figuring out how to use the battle system is unclear and it takes several hours until you unlock the mechanics which actually make combat fun. Many of the characters are over-designed, and frankly look a bit hideous. The side quests are serviceable, but never engaged me nearly as much as the main story content. However, apart from one or two pacing issues and a few inconsistent vocal performances, I love just about everything else. The story is relatively intricate and deep, and leads to some very effective emotional beats. The characters are (for the most part) quite well defined and enjoyable to interact with. The soundtrack is outstanding, and contains some of my favorite songs from any video game I've ever played. The battle system can be tremendously fun in the latter half, and has some very unique and satisfying mechanics. The worlds are vast and enjoyable to explore. Visually it's incredibly good, the substandard resolution is a shame, but it doesn't actively detract from the experience while playing. It is unfortunate that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 doesn't contain the level of consistency seen in it's predecessor, but it is still highly worthwhile. In fact, the high points in 2 are often far higher than those in 1, even if the overall quality doesn't quite match up. I'd recommend trying Xenoblade 2 out, if you can get past the flaws it's one of the most unique and beautiful games out there. Expand

    Delightful and surprising story; incredibly advanced and fine combat, although explained terribly; lots of really good side quests, but a few are not so good; amazing exploration and world; outstanding music; some visuals and voice acting are good, others very bad; and in general XC2 is an amazing game. The original Xenoblade Chronicles is great, but I honestly prefer this game, since the gameplay and exploration are far superior. Expand

    Love this game. Beautiful and amazing music, characters, story, landscape. I prefer the English voice acting. One of my most favorite game of all time, possibly the best for me.

    A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

    Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
