After I got gravely disappointed by the Pokemon game I'm really glad that I found this masterpiece.
Aside from the huge open world you can explore and quest forever in you'll also feel how you progress through the game in the combat system as well. It was starting really slowly at the beginning mostly using auto attacks but after a while it gets more engaging and I came to really enjoy

I also love how there are so many small things which wouldn't be necessary for a game but make it feel more lively. For example all dialogues from NPCs changed after it came out that the chairman was doing shady businesses behind everyones back.
The humor is also really great and I didn't skip a single cutscene which is a first for me.

Honestly, this game does improve from the last two in many ways, but its gatcha mechanic is horrible. The combat is also pretty stale. I know that the orbs do something individually when they are rotating around the boss, but I don't know exactly and it doesn't matter. Cause you win. I do like that there is a healing, tank, and DPS roles. That is not everybody's cup of tea, but I do like that it is an option. Pity it doesn't matter much due to the orb thing. Honestly, I didn't pick the blades for their specials or passives at one point because you really don't need them, because the orb breaking is so overpowered compared to everything else.

The characters themselves are pretty good and enjoyable as is the story. The ice rabbit annoyed me but not for the reason other people didn't like her... Her feet, hands, and ears bothered me. Her very fake southern accent was also irritating and didn't fit the design anyway. Music was also good but I liked X more.

Overall, I would give this game around 6.5, but given how metacritic works I will bump it to a 7.

Amazing story, characters, cutscenes, music, visuals etc.

However, everything takes extremely long time to do. A few fights in my playthrough ended up taking around 25 minutes.. Also, the battle system is unnecessarily complex. It took me like 35 hours and a bunch of youtube tutorials to understand it all. That being said, I would strongly recommend this game if you like jrpgs in

The english dubbingbis awfull as every character gets a scottish accent. When tryng to play in japanese it is still difficult because every character is given a new name for sme reason. The combat sysem is automatic where you only combo specials together. I walk away whenever a fight starts and let the game play itself. You need to switch characters often in the middle of a fight, and thats not an option. There in combat menu! You are actively punshed for not partcipating in mini games. The cut scenes are far longer than ive ever played even in other multi hundred hour rpgs averageing at least 20 minuets. If you think you will like this game because you are a jrpg fan or even a xenoblade fan, BEG you to reconsider. I wish i could finish the story right now, but i can't play for 30 minuets because the game is punishing me for doing too much main story content! Expand

I absolutely LOVE the story, characters, environments, music, and above all else, the battle system of this game. I even like the gacha mechanics to get rare blades. Xenoblade 2 is, along with its predecessor, an absolute masterpiece! I deduct 1 point from the score because the menu becomes a mess after you get a load of items. Give me the option to MANUALLY organize my stuff, Monolith...

    I love xenoblade games. So why a 7? Well, I'm a realistic person, I don't rate everything a 10 just because I like it.

Xenoblade 2 is a great game with a lot of rough edges. The most difficult part is the English voiceover. The main character "Rex" has the most embarrassing fake yelling I've ever heard. I have no idea how the director didn't storm into the booth, slap him in the face

Xenoblade 2 is a great game with a lot of rough edges. The most difficult part is the English voiceover. The main character "Rex" has the most embarrassing fake yelling I've ever heard. I have no idea how the director didn't storm into the booth, slap him in the face and when he yells "ow" tell him, good, now yell like that. He isn't the only one who gives a lackluster performance, "Gramps" the dragon looking creature and animal familiar of the party is just some old guy who reads his lines in a voice. That is it.

The game's graphics are honestly really good, but like breath of the wild, probably pushes the graphics to the limits of the console. I wish I could have lowered some settings to get fewer frame drops in some cases. I would love to see this game on PC for this reason, so I could max out the settings and see it in its full beauty.

Storywise this game is quite compelling thankfully, so it can make up for some of the poor acting. Not much else to be said without major spoilers.

The depth of the RPG elements is what will make you want to play or not want to play this game. If you like complexity, you will enjoy this. If you want a simple straightforward system, you might want to skip this. It has lots of stuff that you will probably forget about.

In terms of characters, the catcha system is what KILLS the game's fun. You have to open silly little crystals to get new characters to use, and getting good ones is almost impossible. Worse still, each one is bound the party member you open it on. This means you might open a great tank character on your healer party member. It feels bad. Only Rex, the main character is able to use any character you open, which you won't want to do anyhow, because he by default has the objectively best character anyhow.

Getting over that slog, the ability to chain together elements and combo into huge amounts of damage is even more satisfying than xenoblade 1's chain attacks which were already fun to pull off at the right time. The combat early on may seem slow and boring, but that is to give you time to warm into it, which is good for players who aren't deep RPG players. Once you get a full loadout and party, you will find yourself being mindful in hard fights of when to change, attack, and use combos. With the right line up you can create some really powerful and engrossing parties.

In the end, I was sad that it ended, and sadly this is one of those games with no post game content like the old days where you load back to the last save before you beat the game. But considering this game was such an early title for the console I can forgive that along with the already large amount of content.

Fun to explore, battle system is highly subjective though having to stand still and autoattack is horrible, it basically has the gameplay as classic world of Warcraft for the 1st too many hours, to many phone game mechanics like having to wait real time with the game on to get some mission done, especially m I on that are mandatory for some Blade's quest line, and Blades are just a horrible gacha system that shouldn't have existed in the 1st place
Oh, also those blades tends to be cringe and really point towards a kid audience. There are some references to Xenosaga, that are ruined by some evil nopon action sketch, and this also RetCon the 1st Xenoblade, erasing one of the way you could read the game, so this horrible plot is just so bad that destroyed a good one even if they have in common only a single point.
Good game by per se, but it shouldn't have "Xeno" in the name while also being a work of Monolith soft.
Some improvements that were made in xenoblade X aren't in this game.
Good music from Mor Ardain onwards, bad voice acting and no, saying "just use the Japanese one" doesn't make it any better
Honestly, Torna is the only part worth playing, it sucks that to play it you have to own the mistake that is the main game so it automatically become not worth it.
Also the characters are so uninteresting that's almost impossible to empathize with them, even when you should. One of the protagonists is a pedophile, and there are pedophile jokes used at a funeral by another characters, that later scold someone for not paying respect to the dead. I don't understand how anyone would like this unless they are 612 yo circa and/or likes anime way too much, to the point when they don't even read or try to understand the plot, they just want to see the sketches that they have already seen in every slice of life anime ever

I would strongly recommend to buy it together with the expansion, so you receive some nice perks early on (I think the expansion is a humbler, but better game overall)

    Pros:
+The story: a classical story of heroes and love which keeps getting complex as it evolves.
+ The music: it is unbelievable how well they paired each theme with each part of the story and cutscene. You get really emotional
+ Content: a lot to be done, if you like exploration and grinding, welcome to your paradise. Many different enemies, each of which feels different
+ Combat system: it becomes increasingly complex as the game goes on, but at the very end you feel the mastery, and it is very satisfying. I realized I learned the full complexity of the battle system when I faced the final boss. You feel.. oh WOW now I know how to play this! It was such the feeling that I decided to replay the game

    Cons:

    - Performance: it is a bit laggy, there are FPS drops and clear popping in large areas. Fortunately the combat doesn't require you to make frame-perfect moves so they aren't a big issue
    - Cutscenes are too long: some cutscenes are GREAT, but some are just unnecessary and become too repetitive, especially in the mid-game.
-Too much grinding: developing your characters to their full potential (which is by no means a requirement) requires to complete some requirements which may take a loooong time to complete
    -Too much micromanagement

The soundtrack is just mind blowing, being one of the most important parts of the game, it captures aspects and is really reminiscent of the first game's while still maintaining its own unique qualities to make it something that is really exclusive to this one. The songs really are quite meaningful and aren't just a mashup thrown together just to provide some background audio, it fits the characters and all of the cutscenes that they all appear in. The characters are all interesting and probably the strongest quality of this game, all very diverse from each other but still at the same time able to complement one another in a way that is really unprecedented in a lot of other games. The development of these characters all play a part in the story and they all develop quite beautifully. The world design has always been such a strong point in the Xenoblade series and its just as strong if not stronger in this one compared to the other Xenoblade games. You really get a feel for each of the different environments its as if each of the titans have their own personality that can be represented by the terrain they all possess. You get a sense of the entire world of Alrest being these distant and divided factions of various species, races and beings while also contrasting and with the 1st game and introducing a new theme to the franchise it really is a thing to behold. To me, the story to this game is a lot more character focused compared to being more narrative based like the first game. The story is very compelling, and jaw-dropping, I thought that all of the messages that Monolithsoft incorporated into their story was very captivating and unique. One thing that I absolutely adored, and something that stuck out to me- and this is kind of going back to my point on the characters but, I just thought that it was so cool how you have all these different characters with varied personalities being able to conform as a group as all of their lives intertwine together and correlate to each other in one way or another, all while they strive for their main goal, Elysium. Now I know I just said that the story is very unique and this may sound contradictory to what I said but let me explain. There are a lot of reviews and what have you that have said that this game has a cliche story and I agree and disagree. (This is someone who holds this game in a high regard/manner I love it to the bottom of my heart) I think that these people who think this are taking some of these scenes at face-value, and are not really opening their eyes. Monolithsoft are very intelligent and innovative when it comes to story-writing they know make you think that the obvious possibility is always going to be the outcome when its the opposite, they know how to put their own unique spin on these "cliches" or "tropes" to not make them feel bland or overly used and to make them feel as if they are an original idea. I think that the premise alone kind of invalidates that argument but thats just me, and some people may not see it that way. It made me appreciate the story, characters and the developers even more and I hope that some of you will feel the same way. This is why I said that I agree and disagree. I, personally, was very invested into the games story and thought that the story was very special and that there really wasn't anything concrete to really validate the claim of it being cliche. It really just depends on who you are, how perceptive you are and if the game can captivate you enough to the point where you are thinking this critically. If you go into the game thinking negatively about it you won't give a damn about or even realize some subtle themes and meanings. Moving on, I'd like to talk specifically about the combat. Now this is coming from someone who has put over 500+ hrs in this game so take that as you will. The combat can be very convoluted at the beginning of the game and can be hard to pickup for beginners, and for the beginning of the game a lot of the battles are going to be very easy. There will be a lot of things thrown at you via tutorials but its ok because you can review them later on. As you progress through the game it becomes much more fun to fight enemies, the enemies have more HP to experiment with in terms of learning driver, blade and, fusion combos and you also begin to dabble in elemental weaknesses and learn to stack elemental orbs. The combat is very vast and deep and has quite a learning curve but the result is SO worth it. Pouch items are very useful and I suggest you use them. You begin to build affinity charts and there are many items that you can use to suit your specific play-style. Essentially the combat is very fun and if you give it a fair chance and understand it the high you get from it is so rewarding. Anyways, thanks for reading my review, PLEASE GIVE IT A TRY! Expand

The only downside i have is the voice acting on some caracters. Voices of Nia, Malos, Jin, Poppi were amazing the others meh. To have only one active side quest at a time was also meh but overall great game.

I never was a fan of JRPG. This game changed that. The setting is awesome, the story intriding and the music absolutly fantastic. The battle system can be quite complex and sometimes the characters drift a little bit to much into anime tropes. Also the sidequest are mew most of the time. But the main story is long enough to compensate for that.

A great game. Charismatic characters, Fantastic Japanese dubbing and a beautiful art. Gameplay can be boring for people who don't have the patience to wait for slow narrative. The battle is very good when more skills are unlocked and combinations between the various blades to be found.

Interesting entry for the franchise. Worst than the original, but with some great additions. Tutorials are BY FAR the worst thing this game has, a lot of them, and soo bad explained. Story is interesting but a bit too much "anime alike" and the music is AMAZING. Good game.

I'm now on my second play through of the game and I'm just as marveled. Between the engrossing storyline, battle system, fulfilling characters, colorful graphics, vast environments; there's little room for improvement.

One complaint I've noticed across the board with people is the graphics and framerate. People like to compare the graphics to consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox and fret over the lack of. I do not find this to get an issue. But then again, I understand the hardware limits of the Nintendo Switch. For it's form factor, it's quite impressive. As for framerate, this was remedied a few updates ago.

I will say, if you're not a fan of jrpgs, this game might not be for you. There are very heavy jrpg elements to this game, from the story to the music. I find them to get enchanting however.

This game deserves every bit of praise it gets and is a 10 in my book.

Actually xenoblade 2 would be a wonderful game. BUT, the fighting system is so bad! Exclusively Quicktime events ..... what I hate about it? you always have to gaze at the edge of the screen instead of being able to observe the wonderfully animated figures. Since the coolest graphic helps nothing if you have to focus on something else. Too bad.....

This game is wayyy too complex for a typical JRPG-lover like me. I expectet it to be a simple but beautiful journey. But it was more like a Dark Souls with a heavily complex combat-system. I got killed for over an hour again and again before the first city and didn't get the combat mechanics at all.

A deep and satisfying combat system (which admittedly does take a little while getting fully fleshed out) ensure the gameplay is up to snuff with the great world-building and chill inducing narrative. The soundtrack is equally on par, with some distinctive, captivating tracks that add to the grandiose nature of Alrest.

It's a huge game full of content that could easily have you playing for over 100 hours - and what a time you'll have!

The game touches on some pretty deep themes like the fleetingness of life and the need to find meaning to it on an individual basis. 'Blades' struggle with the idea that their memories are reset in their cycle of death and rebirth. I was really happy with the introspective dialogue and complex feelings of the characters.

This is one of my favourite games on the Switch and is easy to recommend, especially if you're into JRPGs or are looking for a huge game to sink your teeth into. It's standalone expansion, Torna - The Golden Country, is also well worth checking out for fans of this game.

The story is interesting and it's what kept me playing, even though it contains typical japanese weeabo/loli themes. The music is actually amazing, Mor Ardain night theme has to be my personal favorite.

However, the combat is absolut garbage, hated every minute of it. If you've ever played an MMO like WoW, it can be compared to raiding, except solo and you use your blades (kinda like pokemons) to perform elemental combos. Only one problem, it's really bad compared to todays MMO combat standards.

The art style of this game makes me cringe and I felt like I needed to apologize to anyone who entered the room while I was playing it. They could have easily toned down the sexuality of the game without diminishing anything except the pervier humor elements (like characters ogling each other like they were about to start bleeding from the nose). If any of this felt necessary to the characters or their development, then I might be able to accept it but it is clearly just added as an uncomfortable sort of fan service.

The story is boring and predictable and involves several variations on the "cut scene fight where the good guys are getting dunked on, followed by them learning an important lesson about friendship/perseverance/sacrifice and winning" trope. Even for people who enjoy that trope, it is massively overdone. The game is also full of pointless side quests and time sinks to keep you playing the game even if you aren't actually making any complicated decisions or tactical choices. The combat has a little tactical depth, but you can't access most of the actual options until hours into the game as they slowly trickle mechanics to you. I played this game for over 80 hours and eventually realized I never enjoyed it and was just lured into continuing to play in order to complete it.

The story of the game is great, it discussed some deep themes and isnt afraid to delve into darker territories. Its filled with unexpected twists and turns and truly explores the characters’ personalities, putting them at their lowest before breaking through with a magnificent crescendo.

This is accompanied by perhaps the best soundtrack of any game ive ever played. The lyrical tracks are hit-or-miss, but the exploration themes and especially cutscene music (such as Counterattack or the violin version of Drifting Souls) are unforgettable and i still listen to them despite having finished the game over a year ago. The voice acting is surprisingly good for an anime rpg. Some characters are just plain bad (the protagonist in particular cannot scream to save his life, but is otherwise decent) but the majority give life to their characters, some even surpassing their japanese counterparts. Nia, Gramps, and Malos come to mind-their english VAs going as far as to completely change how you view the character.

The combat is a hit-or-miss. Not everyone likes it but those that do like it a lot. Its real-time instead of turn-based, which is always welcome imo. Your character does basic attacks on their own, while its up to you to control their arts (skill) usage, positioning, and combos. It starts out slow but as they start rolling out more features and your arts start recharging more often due to being higher level it gets entertaining. Its also more about strategy than skill-how you set up your party with blades and accessories is just as important as how you perform in battle.

The game is moderately difficult, but becomes nearly impossible if you dont grasp the convoluted upgrade mechanics (personally i didnt have a problem with it, but you may need to look up tutorials if it gets confusing). There are some difficulty spikes here and there in the story that require either grinding or altering your strategy, but otherwise it isnt that difficult if you make sure to keep your level up. If it gets too difficult though, you can always switch to easy mode (or even customise the difficulty, if you have the dlc)

The world-building in the game is fantastic. It all takes place on the backs of titans-giant living beings that are dying out. Due to this, all the different titans you explore have vastly different scenery-all of it breathtaking. I found myself exploring just for the sake of seeing more of the magnificent world theyve crafted. This is slightly hampered by skill-checks, which require you to have certain blades to get through the environment, but it doesnt intrude too much with the overall experience.

The performance is fairly stable, and the resolution isnt too bad most of the time, but you can get as low as 15 fps if battles get too chaotic, and the resolution may dip, making the beautiful scenery look like pixelated mush. Play docked if you can.

Finally, yes the game has fanservice. A lot of it. This turned me off at the beginning, making it difficult to enjoy cutscenes, but you eventually get used to it. If its any comfort, all the fanservice blades have significant character that can be explored in their side quests, and can be completely ignored (besides the main cast) if you dont like their designs, which are great if you disregard the boob-windows and low-cut outfts.

It took me about 80 hours to finish the story but i ended up spending nearly 300 hours enjoying the game. Its a must have for any jrpg fan, and anyone who enjoys epic stories, breathtaking world to explore and sweeping orchestras that stick with you long after youve put the game down.

Having never played a game in the Xenoblade series and looking for an RPG to get into on the Switch, I made the decision to jump right in and see what Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had to offer. Although there are pros and cons, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a fantastic RPG that every Nintendo Switch owner should consider looking into.

Let's get some of the negative things out of the way. This game needed a bit more polishing to smoothen out some of its rough edges. One of my biggest gripes is that some of the game mechanics are simply not explained to the player, or they're confusing. So it is possible to go through the game without realizing its full potential unless you look them up. The way side quests are handled can be confusing because sometimes the game won't mark a quest on your map properly, which can lead to frustration. Also, sometimes the environment can work against you during combat. For example, you find yourself fighting and killing an enemy next to or over a cliff, which you may or may not be able to reposition, and lose those item drops as a result. Lastly, prepare to spend a lot of time in the menu since you'll need to unlock skills, swap out characters, etc., which may become tedious.

Now, let's focus on all the good. The soundtrack is simply amazing, I found myself just wandering around and exploring an area just to listen to it. Speaking of, the game rewards you for exploring: looking in every little nook and cranny might yield something useful. The characters develop in a meaningful way, their conversations are well written, which are often very charming and funny. Once the mechanics are understood, the combat can be complex. Finally, for those who like to hunt for every item, this game has much to offer in that department.

All in all, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a damn fine RPG that is fun, engaging, and will have you sinking, possibly, hundreds of hours into it. Sure, this game is flawed in many ways, but despite that, it really is just great experience throughout. If you are a Switch owner, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Now for starters. what you can expect. Story, It is excellent, nothing to say there.

Combat. Horrific. This game is like Runescape.- you can't even hit while walking you must remain still.- and let the fight play out, and then as you hit, you build up gauge, which you spend to use on special attacks "Arts" the worst part is, let's say 3 enemies front of you, you killed the first one? Bam.- your gauge is reset. it's pathetic really to kill 3x enemies where gauge resets every single time so you can't use your arts, and just have to watch your dude auto them super boring. I swear i felt asleep several times, but promised a friend to play it for the story, so i did.

Game Mechanics : You can jump, that's cool, but when you are climbing ladders, walls , you must wait as if it is a game belonging to the 90's you played zelda botw? fine you can jump while climbing. this is QoL update really, - they love to waste your time it's a game made december 2017, so i call it a 2018 game.- and they never heard of fast climb.

while you play. you get 99 notifications. and the game thinks you wish to read everything 24/7. the worst part is that, it doesn't just explain you tutorial, it talks to you as if you have an AI partner who wants to remind you of things. "Btw did you know" "Oh yeah you should totally do this" it's just waste of everyone's time.- like they type so much I fking forget daheck the hint was to begin with. So i'm like thanks for talking so much daheck were you saying again?

So yes.- this game, has a story, You will enjoy it, it's cool, characters are amazing. but seriously. when it comes to gameplay. it could fking use a huge upgrade.

This is my honest review, 0 % **** everyone who disagree's with me are just fanboys. except i'll accept if they enjoy the combat system. that's alright personal preference, but these clunky gameplay.- no way, you have to lie to admit that it's actually a good idea.

Additionally there is a gachapon system for obtaining essential equipment for your characters and the game forces you to save beforehand so you cannot reset for what you want despite the game being an offline single player game.

While I do have my issues with this game, I wouldn't call it outright bad, just kind of disappointing compared to the previous entries.

However the game has its fair share of flaws such as the resolution which maxes at 720p (underwhelming by today's standards) and often dips below this with the game genuinely looking like a PS2 game in some instances, the frame rate also dips below 30 on numerous occasions. The lip syncing is also non existent which kinda breaks the immersion but isn't too much of a problem and the game doesn't do a very good job at explaining things a lot of the time, as well as the waypoint which is pretty bad at directing you on where to go. Overall, the game is great and definitely worth checking out despite its flaws, I just can't shake the feeling though that this game was rushed to meet the holiday 2017 deadline. Expand

Overall, do I think Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is overrated? Yeah. It has subpar Graphics, a complicated-yet uninteresting battle system, way too much play time for just the story mode, mediocre characters, and Voice Acting that is MegaMan 8 levels of bad.
However, it has enough pros for me to say that I still recommend it to RPG fans and even those interested. I'm relatively alone on this.

The main issue with the game is the early game combat, when special moves are limited, some fights can take an age but that's just an early game issue which I personally don't have an issue with, the player shouldn't always be so powerful that they easily defeat everything.
The random nature of getting blades can be a negative too, there is so much content connected to the blades themselves that unless you are particularly dedicated, will never get to see.
Overall, I personally believe the negative aspects of the game for some, are positive aspects. It isn't a game for everyone, but it's a perfect masterpiece for me.

This game isn't perfect, but it's hands down the most fun game I've played on the Switch so far. The story and characters are engaging, and there's so much to do. Difficulty is perfect for me, challenging at times but certainly not frustrating: if you get stuck you can always gear and level up to be better prepared. Amazing game. Would have been a 10 if not for a few weird design choices.

Now i want to get this out of the way. Xenoblade 2 is my first Xeno series game, ever but i have seen Xenoblade 1 for comparison. Now i want to get this out of the way. Xenoblade 2 is my first Xeno series game, ever but i have seen Xenoblade 1 for comparison. Even if i may be a bit blinded by love for this game (especially Pyra, who's character design i love, but i'll get to that later) it has its upsides and downsides. I'll start with those downsides.

    Cons:

The gameplay! Oh goodness the gameplay, the compass system is atrocious! I spent literally 8 hours finishing 4 early side quests because i had no clue where to go. The aggro system when alone is inconsistent at best and lack of explanation for the more sophisticated areas of the game makes it not very beginner friendly until about 15 hours in. Now the gameplay isn't bad at all, but it could be better with some quality of life improvement. I understand Xenoblade 1 wasn't very good at this either.

What the actual hell is the voice acting? I have cringed many, many times from how abysmal/inconsistent the voice acting is in this game. A lot of times the voice actors seem to forget what emotions are and other times certain lines are delivered like they are from a Triple A actor! What the hell? It detracts from the emotion of those moments, but when the voice acting is good, it's GOOD since the actual actors themselves are good.

Animations/facial expressions. Look i get the anime art style is not designed with this in mind, but at least show SOME expression. I swear one of the bosses has the same dumbass grin the entire time, even after you beat him. That's another thing. Why can the heroes never canonically succeed? Even after thrashing a boss? It's fun to see your hero overcome a challenge sometimes!

The Blade system is fun on paper, but in practice. Oof, getting a good Blade is so hard! Sure you can get 'legendary Blade's from common crystals, but it's very rare and, to me, the Blades were MASSIVE missed potential in the combat. It would've been nice to have them fight using a sub-weapon every now and then, without your commands, acting as actual support rather than a limiting anchor, and with combat as free-flowing as the type Xenoblade is known for, an anchor is the LAST thing you need. At least their special moves are nice

Alright now that's about it for the notable bad sides of this game, let's start on the good!

The storytelling in this game is amazing! With allusion to past events that isn't to vague or too descriptive, revelations on every corner and a story you advance at your own pace (i overlevel everything, lol) along with relatable villains you really feel for the story serves up one hell of a sometimes silly, sometimes serious dish of feels that's guaranteed to stay with you well past the ending. Good thing there's DLC and a prequel because if you love JRPG stories, you'll love this one!

The character designs are amazing! Now this is a contentious point but i personally love the character designs, especially of the villains. Despite the cartoonish art style and lack of proper expression, the designs alone tell us a lot about who we're looking at and who they are, that is a sign you've made your character's appearance well. In terms of personality and actual characters. Mmm, not sure, that's a yes and no, some of them are rather boring.

The open world and care taken into creating this environment where you can fight every enemy you come across (usually with disastrous results) is absolutely wonderful. I've played for hours upon hours just grinding in the open world, taking in its beauty. The artwork for this game is amazing!

Now if you think Metal Gear Solid had good cutscenes, which it does, Xenoblade 2 has a treat for you. I don't normally enjoy lots of cutscenes, but given the occasionally adorable, sometimes silly, but funny characters, disregarding their occasional boredom, the cutscenes, which use the same art style as the rest of the game, are excellently crafted and executed PERFECTLY with these characters, in my opinion. It isn't enough to propel the game to 9/10 but just enough to save it from 7/10. Especially when said cutscene is a fight. Man those are good.

The levelling system isn't a favourite of mine. A bit too complicated for your everyday RPG with this 'extra XP' stuff, but it's easy to master.

Finally. Just listen to the SOUNDTRACK! Even if you don't like these kinds of games, but love a kickass soundtrack, Xenoblade has it for you, and when audio and cutscenes combine, well, cinematic magic happens since the composers did such excellent jobs capturing the feel of every moment in the game. Now i don't like some, like the replacement for 'You Will Know Our Names' from XB1 but it's still REALLY GOOD

Final verdict. If you like JRPG's, don't mind a bit of bad voice acting and like a good story, you'll enjoy Xenoblade 2. It's a deceptively deep, fun and emotional game i'd recommend every Switch owner try for at least 4 hours

AndThe first Xenoblade has been my all-time favourite game since I first played it many years ago. When I first heard a sequel was to be released I was skeptical, given how perfectly wrapped up the story of the first game was, but I was determined to give it a chance. The artstyle left a bad taste in my mouth from the start but I let it slide in hopes that it would tell a good story. And after getting through every unbearable generic trope filled scene complete with abhorrent voice acting, I can say with complete sincerety that Xenoblade 2 is nothing but an insult to the whole Xeno series. The character design is all over the place which makes being imersed in the world near impossible, characters clash with the settings and eachother, and many of the characters are glaringly designed with only fanservice in mind. The voice acting is another thing that takes me out of it. Half the time they sound like they have no idea what emotion theyre supposed to be feeling. Even voice actors that I know are good, sound terrible in this game. And acting aside, the writing of the characters is so weak and boring I couldn't bring myself to aftually like any of them. Few have any substance beyond their given cliché trope, and whats there leaves much to be desired. The story is shallow and very poorly paced, and its unnecessarily convoluted to give a shoddy illusion of real depth. There is so much wasted time in almost every scene, even in key moments which totally ruins any emotional momentum that was built up. And speaking of ruining the moment, too often the choice of music (or complete lack of music) for an emotional or otherwise important scene would totally clash with what was going on. The soundtrack is one of the few things this game has going for it, and they still managed to ruin scenes with a poor choice in songs. The story is all over the place, the antagonists have shaky motivations--if you can even call them motivations--and it takes concepts that were very well done in the first game and turns them into a lifeless mockery. The main cast is nothing but your run of the mill dime-a-dozen anime cast with nothing particularly memorable about them. It was hard to find any reasom to want them to succeed except for the fact that as the heros of the story they're meant to. And to top it all off the ending gives you one of the dryest, most boring cutscenes of the whole game. It retcons the end of the first game, because the story of 2 can't fit into the canon as it is, further showing this game was a poorly planned cashgrab using the popularity of the series name. The end is unsatisfying, and leaves you feeling like you've accomplished nothing. Xenoblade 2 is a waste of time and a waste of money. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start out by saying that this game has a fair amount of problems, and that I would not recommend this to everyone. That said, this is the perfect game for me.

THE game has a deep and interesting STORY. I particularly loved the main blades', Morag's and Jin's stories, as they develop from just "bad" or "good" guys, to people you care for and have sympathy for, as they were all put in difficult situations they didn't know what to do about. I also love how the story introduces a little comedy whenever the game goes too deep in on a topic such as the meaning of life, morality, the death of loved ones etc. as this keeps the game from becoming depressing, but still allows the game to develop a deep and interesting story that shows that the developers cared about the player.

THE COMBAT in this game was also great, albeit not introduced in the best way (the game uses a LOT of text prompts, and doesn't give you the option to re- read about a feature you have already been explained once before). I especially liked how the game allows you to have your very own combat style, being able to choose (as long as you grind a bit) exactly what blades you want to use, with the choice of in total six different types of tanks, healers and attack blades. I, myself loved how the game lets you exploit canceling the auto attack of pyra/ mythra, to instead allow you to recharge your arts super fast, rather than doing a bit more damage. The elemental attacks and combos, their ability to seal away enemy attacks, combined with chain attacks, all while the combat is in real time, makes each combat encounter an expertly crafted strategy game, while keeping the pace of combat quite high. The enemies' abilities to have different attack styles, just like yourself, and adapt to your attack style makes each combat encounter feel slightly different, and keeps combat fun through the entire game (although I could see how it might feel a bit grindy, as this keeps each battle going for longer, and you'll be in combat a LOT).

SIDE QUESTS, however, get VERY grindy, and are not too original or too fun to play through if you are not a total completionist (like me). However, I still enjoyed the grind a lot, and loved levelling up blades and feeling the pure satisfaction of every affinity chart I finished (what can I say, the combat is just fun enough, and the stories in some cases justified the grind).

Lastly, this game has BY FAR the BEST SOUNDTRACK I have ever heard in any game that I have played (but then, again, I haven't played that many other games compared to most people). The environments are also extremely beautiful, and that's enough said.

The breathtaking open-world of Alrest achieves more than immersing the player in gracing every path, patch of grass, desert surface, snow-covered expanse and artificial terrain with persistent feet taking them through over 70 hours of play time.

The game's rich battle system is superbly sophisticated, with the rudimentary premise of shifting your focus on an opponent and attacking built upon well with the pacing of the game as new chapters lead to new layers of compelling gameplay. Characters, regardless of whom you select in your party-of-three, are equipped with a maximum of three blades that are categorised in elements: Fire, Water, Ice, Wind, Earth, Thunder, Light and Dark, each of which are effective in opposition to the contrasting element. Four arts can accompany the chosen blade, offering a plethora of abilities from healing to attacking to shielding. This, might I elucidate on, is only a minuscule portion of the convoluted components of this battle system that urges you to devise a strategy, whether premeditated or improvised, for each and every encounter. Said battles are not just matters of diving head-first into a monster's area of vision hoping to accumulate experience in a grinding session, but also a testament to your preparations. Refusing to ready your party with core chips (accessories attributing to an increase in stats for a given blade), the correct equipment and the needed blades will often land you in a difficult situation to escape from; hence a decent strategy should facilitate you in preventing such conditions.

In accordance with any and every existing JRPG, their stories will inevitably weave its way into the player's heart, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is no exception to that notion. Rex, a salvager enjoying the pleasure of perceiving life from a simpler perspective is enlisted with a lucrative assignment which both brings about his short-term demise and a touching scene pivotal to the character development of him and Pyra, his newly-awakened blade, as well as the ever-extending plot itself. As new characters ripe with colourful personalities throw their hat into the perplexing story, so does the abundance of side content as the exploration of different Titans conjure up further side quests expanding the world of Alrest further than we know it. It can be said that the beginning four chapters have a sufficient longevity to aggregate a game in itself, with the subsequent six and final chapters developing the plot with more emotional weight and context. The game progresses at your own pace, as you decide whether to power through it casually or designate a handful of additional hours relishing the vast amount of content that the game proudly offers, hence no linear storyline restricts your freedom.

No JRPG is deserving of its title as such without an exhilarating soundtrack to boot; the Xenoblade franchise adheres to this precedent with more commitment than Brighid's desires to record her shenanigans within her journal. Their divine combination of acoustic and string instruments enhances a thrilling battle beyond the complexity of combat that it offers - this title in particular is no doubt a love letter to the masterpieces that is the original Xenoblade's soundtrack with elements from their music tossed into a heavenly mixture of fresh mechanical rhythms (see what I did there?). Each piece of music exemplifies the situation you are placed in; the awe-inspiring visuals of Gormott is reflected by its adventurous, upbeat cadence whilst an excruciatingly-difficult confrontation with the members of the malevolent organisation Torna is supplemented by music portraying the more serious, meaningful atmosphere.

Even amidst the successes that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is accompanied by, there are a number of blemishes that render this game imperfect. Rex's depiction, while great in the demeanour department, is largely overseen by the almost laughable voice acting - especially when raw emotion is filtered through his words. This is evident in Chapter 1 and beyond, though players will eventually grow attached to his Ash Ketchum-esque character. In the English dub, the attempts to sync the dialogue with the animation, of which was only intended to match the Japanese voice acting, is barely adequate enough to accept, but the verbal portrayals of majority of the primary cast is nothing short of excellent. It does further require refinements with the combat system, alongside the art direction and animation which is often distressing and inconsistent as different artists contradict the unrivalled art style of Masatsugu Saito.

This marvellous Switch title is a genuine must-have for any owners of the hybrid console, hands down.

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
