Though at the end of it, I think the pros outweigh its cons, as I personally got invested into the story and characters, which is necessary for its 50+ hour length.

I think that XC2 is a really good addition to the switch and is the game for the anime JRPG audience. From playing the previous entry, I do think the current Xenoblade is a good and better successor.

This was my first Xenogears/BLade game and oh boy did that game surprise me with quality and length.
Best combat system in a jrpg (after you finally understand the full extent). Top story, beautifully, extensively told. Huuuuge world with so much to do, that is totally on Witcher/Skyrim level, or even more. The Soundtrack is a straight 10 and the graphics are pretty amazing for that

I always imagine if this game would've been for PS4pro or steam, on graphics term...
Anyway, this is the best JRPG of this generation. It's better than Persona 5 in every regard and a perfect combination of old school and modern rpg. Eat this square-enix this is how you do rpgs!!

I completed the game after 128 frigging long hours, never did I get bored.....could've completed that maybe 30-40 hours earlier, If I would not mind developing my blades and doing sidequests.

As of finishing it yesterday I have to say that in my opinion that it was the best game released in 2017! As I got further and further into the game I found myself slowly but surely becoming entranced into the deep world of Xenoblade 2. The story despite having a somewhat slow and trope-heavy start really began to pick up around Chapter 3 or so and I found myself becoming emotionally attached to the various characters within this story. All in all it took me roughly 85 hours to finish the main story alongside a significant amount of extra content (affinity charts, sidequests etc.) and almost every second of it was magical.

However, despite my amazing experience there is a reason I said almost. This game has a few issues which slightly dragged down the experience for me. This included lip syncing, occasional bad voice acting from the English cast, blade summoning, collectathon sidequests, somewhat invasive tutorials and worst of all a combat system which was only a bit above mediocre. The combat system despite being generally engaging due to its simplistic complexity ended up becoming too repetitive to remain anywhere near as engaging as in the beginning. In my opinion the main issue with this battle system was how long it would sometimes take to kill even normal enemies. This issue could easily be fixed by buffing enemy damage whilst also buffing the damage and healing of your own party.

This game however, isn't for everyone, if you're looking for a short game to play or can't stand minor yet also infuriating inconveniences you most likely won't find this game suffices your needs. I'd personally recommend this game for those who rather than focusing only on game play also enjoy the stories and lore within video game universes.

Despite the negatives of the game I find that my own personal enjoyment of the game severely outweighed the negatives mentioned. Overall I'd give the game a solid 9.5/10 based purely on my own enjoyment of the game!

I'd never played a JRPG before, combat looked strange, I was not a fan of the voice acting in the trailer, what I had seen of the story looked basic, and the art style did not appeal to me whatsoever. I eventually looked into it more and as I learned more about it I slowly came on to the idea of buying it. So I picked it up when it came out, cautiously, and got stuck into it. In the end, I was wrong about nearly everything, this is one of the best games of 2017 in my opinion, and not only has it made me interesting in playing another JRPG it exiles in all the things I was worried about when I first learned about it. Combat works, and its some of the most interesting, fun and complex combat in any game. Once you catch onto it at the beginning it is workable and as it slowly introduces new mechanics it improves tenfold. It does a relatively good job of introducing mechanics and inner workings of combat but I found some combat explanations online very useful. Mastering a particular aspect of combat and then going back to defeat a particularly hard foe is extremely satisfying. And the levelling up of your character and blades, or unlocking a new power is satisfying in the same way. The story in Xenoblade is something I ended up really enjoying, its pretty fun and despite the game's length tended to go past pretty brisk at most points. It deals with some interesting themes about friendship and what it means to be human, all this through an ensemble of colourful and interesting characters with depth. This goes for both the main cast, NPCs and even the villains I was happy to watch ALL of the many long cutscenes and stayed engaged with the story the whole time. I had said that at my initial learning of the game I was not on board with the voice acting but in the end, it was pretty ok with me. To be clear I played with English voices because I am not a true weeb and while I was mostly indifferent about the voice acting the voices were distinctive and seemed correct for (and a part of) the characters. Not to mention the fact that there was a large variety of voices, you got not just American accents but Scottish, British, Australian and more. And from these accounts, you could tell which nation the person speaking was from with pretty good accuracy, which I reckon is a cool touch and some fun world building. Xenoblade brings an extremely interesting approach to fantasy that also integrates it with a degree of science fiction and an original idea for a world. I was really happy that it did this because it made the game all the more better. And finally, while at the beginning I was not a fan of the art style I very quickly grew comfortable and actually really loved it. But, sadly my one big complaint comes within this category and it is to do with character models. While most are really good basically all of the female models are dumb and oversexualised. What makes it worse is that some of these characters who have been objectified by their design end up being really cool and fleshed out characters. It says a lot that this is by far my biggest issue but it was noticeable and pervasive throughout all of the game. I think some of my issues with this is that it's my first JRPG and the first time I've really had this as an issue but it doesn't dismiss this as a valid problem and a slight on a great game. In conclusion. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an extremely good game with a lot of merit in a lot of places and in my mind is an uncountable must have for Nintendo Switch. Expand

Music, story, characters and landscape are all awesome, and you can really feel sucked in to the story and can't stop playing to explore the world more and more.

Only downside is that I feel for some people the combat system might get boring after a time.

But still I definitely recommend everyone to play this through.

With around 25 hours of play time, this is what I almost can say about this game.
It's not made for everyone, and probably you won't get in a middle point, or you love it so hard, or you will hate it the most.
Since cinematics, ost and story plot are simply amazing (something that went bad in Xen.. X), the main point you have to care about is the gameplay, which is IMO hard to perform

Monolith helps you a lot among the game with full of tutorials (you can even be in a tutorial after 20 hours of playtime), then if you expend many time on it, you won't be afraid of the gameplay.
Something negative to say about the game, IMO is about the english dub which feels really uncomfortable and inaccurate. It just doesn't match with the characters and scenes. Anyway, you can solve this by downloading for free the japanese voices from the eShop.
After all, I love so f***ing hard this game, although i would like to rather it with 10, there are some silly problems like handheld screen resolution or frame rates at some points which makes me to be objective and rate it with 9.
Anyways, it's a JRPG master piece any RPG fan should give a try.

While the game isn't as strong as the first, its still freakin amazing. The battle system has been reweorked and is much better. The overworld and story aren't as good as XC1 or XCX (overworld), but they are still very well done. The only major problem right now is the voice acting/ cut scenes. They feel very weak/cringy at times.

You can't go and compare this game to x, but seeing as it's been named a sequel to the original title, there's bound to be some comparing.

You will definitely find a lot more challenge in this game than you will in the original. The enemies are less merciful and even sometimes aim directly at showing you your place. If you think you're just going to speed through this game, you'd better think again. That level number matters and so does your equipment. Though, that can be said for both this and the original Xenoblade.

The combat is made infinitely more complex by the ability to cancel certain arts and cancel all auto attacks. There is also the ability to quickly charge some Blade Arts by simply abusing that cancel of auto attack. You coulld call this a glich, if you wanted, but with how the animation runs at times, I highly doubt they didn't know it was there. Sometimes, I'm also left to wonder how my CPU Team can still charge faster than I can, reaching tier three special far faster than should be possible otherwise.

Onto the skills themselves, your positioning once again feels extremely important for most skills. Some of it is also watching and making sure your team can follow-up to your set ups, which is telegraphed better than it ever was in the original Xenoblade, due to the fact that these skills have a tendency to be one blade and not any other, unless you want that. That's not to say that the AI is flawless, as sometimes it can go off and do something else entirely that what you planned for, but that's with everything that has them.

As for the element that's more or less absent entirely... there is no proper Armor System like there has been for the original and X. I don't understand this decision, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

I can't lie. I don't much care for Rex or Pyra's... well... "eye-catching" attire... It's fan service, but it's not the kind you want. However, it couldn't and didn't ruin the game for me.

Now for the Graphics, music, voice acting, etc.

The artists knew exactly what sort of art style they were going for, even as the art style seems to be implemented by a mix of several artists. It's anime as heckle and that's what you should go in expecting. The special effects used express this fervently, as well as make some environments more complete than they ever could have been without. Honestly, I can't see why people have a problem with the fact that this is the feel of the game, being that Xenoblade has always been anime-esque, but to each their own.

The music is INCREDIBLE. I can't praise it enough, nor get sick of it. I actually have several places in which I have left the system running merely to hear the music alone for an extended period of time. If there is any song at all that is "bad" in the entire ost, it's only because I favor others over it.

... Now for the ENGLISH voices. The guys over at Monolith knew how bad the English casting was. I say that because they put the infinitely more professional Japanese dub over as FREE Day One DLC.

I went in hoping that the rumors were false, but I found myself HATING Rex's English actor simply for the fact that he can not scream worth a cent. I sort of want to know why he got the roll of Rex, but there are plenty of other english voices that don't match their bodies or ages. So, I believe I can denominate the fact that it was simply the wrong people handling VA casting....

THANKFULLY, the Japanese Dub is better in nearly every way, making for a far more pleasing result. I say nearly, because you can't understand what they say in the after fight conversations unless you speak the language yourself and find yourself confused about the Japanese names used, for the most part. For example: Pyra is the red-hair heroine's English name, but Homura is her Japanese name.

As for the story, all I WILL to say is this: Monolith Soft has done it again and I LOVE them for it. 9/10

Prelude: I bought this game mainly because of the promo price from an online store, hype from my local country's Nintendo groups, and basically Switch doesn't have too many game choices after I am done with Zelda and Odyssey.
Honestly I actually felt regretted over this purchase in the beginning due to few reasons. BUT as I proceed through the game, I am starting to get hooked deeper and deeper.
    The plus:
    1. The story is very engaging although I dislike its pace. The story is just like watching an anime (a teen anime to be precise), get hooked by the story and the suspense all over the cut scene. The setting of the story is very fresh and cool for me too. Cloud sea, world tree, titans, salvaging….
    2. The depth of the game. The longer you play the game, the more things you will learn e.g. the VERY DEEP combat mechanics (blade combo auto attack cancel, arts cancel, blade switch), pouch items, affinity, huge item choices to match with your play style, just like your usual JRPG. It’s very satisfying to see all the skills on the affinity charts are unlocked.
    3. Waifu! We have Pyra, Mythra, Morag, etc. Nuff said.
    4. The content. Many things or places to explore. Play it and you will know about it.

    The minus:
    1. The disgustingly bad graphics in handheld mode. The graphic just looks sooooo bad in handheld mode. It’s just very bad until the extent I can’t believe this game runs on a Switch. However, it looks much better in dock mode. Anyway I am just too lazy to play in dock mode (Switch is meant to be primarily played in handheld mode right). And few hours in, you won’t be bugged by the bad graphics anymore lol.
    2. Awkward camera.
    3. Map is somehow hard to navigate for me.
    4. Childish dialogue. Again, get used to it and you will enjoy the game without any problem.
Overall the game has so much potential if the graphics in handheld mode is as good as dock mode.

The combat requires concentration, timing, and strategy in how you set up your blades and characters to fulfill different roles. The environments are expansive and colorful, full of collectibles, unique monsters and blades to find. Yasunori Mitsuda is back from Xenoblade 1 and in this respect the game is definitely on par with the original, you will want the soundtrack. I don't put a lot of stake in graphics, but the game looks great in docked mode and drops in resolution noticeably in handheld mode, but nothing else suffers any loss. Best JRPG I have ever played. The game is amazing! Would recommend to anyone that likes JRPGs and anyone that got an Switch. It has in depth characters with good story line with hours of gameplay.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a rare treat for Nintendo fans who are generally starved for RPGs, Xenoblade 2 is the perfect follow up game to BOTW as this game has large open areas, but fills them in with content unlike BOTW. The story of this game is amazing, and doesn't require you to have played the first title. All in all if you own a Switch you should try this game.

GIVE IT A CHANCE! YOU WON'T REGRET IT! I am typically a pc and ps4 gamer, but I do own a switch to play some essentials like your big ticket nintendo games, also because my girlfriend will actually play the switch with me unlike the other systems :). Well I have never played Xenoblade Chronicles 1, but I came onto metacritic only to read some of the user reviews for this game (IGIVE IT A CHANCE! YOU WON'T REGRET IT! I am typically a pc and ps4 gamer, but I do own a switch to play some essentials like your big ticket nintendo games, also because my girlfriend will actually play the switch with me unlike the other systems :). Well I have never played Xenoblade Chronicles 1, but I came onto metacritic only to read some of the user reviews for this game (I wanted a new switch game). I took a chance on it without expecting too much and knowing I would possibly be disappointed.

I WAS SO WRONG. Here are the main reasons why.

1.) The game is gorgeous. Don't take this with a grain of salt, yes it is a switch game, yes it doesn't look like the graphics are much to brag about at all. Plain and simple the creators deserve immense credit. The world truly feels alive, and this is the first game where I felt like using a camera application in game to take pictures of the world. The character models are pretty old school, but the attention to detail is there and the characters are still fleshed out so well it's not something that hinders the game.

2.) Story: Well I am about 45 hours into the game and I love it. The world and its history and politics and the conflicts that the world is facing are definitely interesting. The concept of drivers and blades is interesting and how it impacts combat is fantastic for games. So far the story has been emotional and engrossing yet also not predictable which is the key to really making a story that sticks. Great twists!

3.) Combat: At first I was worried, I won't lie. It seemed boring, but as the game progressed I learned that the combat had SO MUCH MORE going on than I thought. They slowly give you more and more until there are so many aspects of combat you're lost in and so many working systems that create a level of depth in the game that is addicting. Rolling for blades is fun as hell.

4.)Sound -- Soundtrack is fantastic, compositions are beautiful and varied for the different lands. My roommate comments on the soundtrack every time I'm playing. The voice acting is also fantastic, I can only say this for the English version of the game (the only one I've tried) One gripe I do have is that during battle time, the lines said by characters do get overused and I wish they would have taken out a lot of it and just let the battle music in the forefront.

Some final tidbits that I think deem comments.
-The difficulty of the game is also at a great level, your typical jrpg feel. Get to a tough part, theres ample things to do to get stronger and then ya hit it again.
-I do wish they had a better tips and info system, the system they have where you buy tips from vendors is stupid especially in a game with this much content and systems to use.

Overall an amazing game: not without a couple gripes. But it is by far one of the best games I've played this year and one of the best rpgs I've played ever. If you're a jrpg fan.. DIVE IN

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is one of the must buys for nintendo switch and is my personal game of the year for 2017. Xenoblade 2 or "xeno 2" is set on a planet named Alrest which is covered by a cloud sea and humans and wildlife must survive on giant creatures named "Titans". There are a wide variety of these said titans in the game and are a lot more creative than the basic "grass, ice, desert" styled landscapes that you usually find in many games (although there are similar ones). The game focuses on a young boy named Rex who accidentally awakens a powerful blade named Pyra or the Aegis. Their mission is to reach the world tree and find a magical land named "Elysium" so that the humans can have a place to thrive and survive due to the titans starting to die out. The plot in that is simple but the way the game executes it makes it thoroughly enjoyable with countless twists and turns. The main enemy is a terrorist group named torna who also wish to access the world tree and it becomes a race to reach elysium. Torna wants to destroy humanity while Rex and pyra want to save it. There are 10 chapters each of them being about 5-10 hours long and i finished the game in about 80+ hours. The main attraction of this game however is battling and as such has a complex but easy to understand battle system that is really enjoyable once you get the hang of it. The game spreads battle tutorials across the first few chapters so you could get used to each section. The only problem is tutorials can never be re-read meaning you have to remember everything when you are told. You can just google if you forget though. In battle your character is the driver and your partner is the blade. There are lots of blades to uncover and you are able to have 3 with you in your party for each character. The battles system is fun for a while but can get tedious if you are battling enemy after enemy but that's the same with any video game. The titans you can explore (there are 8) are all huge and have lots of exploration value. The game doesnt try to throw you straight through the story and due to the huge amount of content within each titan you can spend hours upon hours filling out side quests and just looking through every nook and cranny if you wish. There are other locations but they aren't quite as exapnsive but still are good fun. Something that you will encounter regularly are field skills and each blade has 3. These field skills will be required to access new areas, open treasure and such. Each field skill such as "focus" or "mineralogy" can be upgraded with the affinity chart. The affinity chart is basically a set of abilities the blades have ranging from battle techiques to field skils, however i did encounter a small problem, The affinity chart has layers and the only way to unlock further layers are to complete quests or more commonly.... increase trust. Increasing trust is an absolute pain, to increase trust you must either put items in your characters pouches that the characters like or battling and this can be a huge grind. You could find yourself increasing trust for hours just to complete one quest, This is one thing that annoyed me. In your party you can have 3 characters each equipped with 1-3 blades. You can control only one of them meaning the rest of them use A,I the part A.I is actually really smart and they usually know what attacks to use and when to heal so you usually wont encoutner unlucky defeats. Each Rare blade you unlock has a side quest related to them, these blade side quests take quite a while to complete which is a very good thing meaning that when you have the main story complete you can go back and complete each blades side quests which takes probably even longer than the whole story if you do every single side quest and every single blade side quest. A lot of side quests however require gathering materials. Materials can be gathered from areas named "collection points" however each titan and each area within titans contain different materials and the game will ever tell you where the materials are located so you will use google A LOT. Xeno 2 is overall bug free. I encountered absolutely 0 glitches and the difficulty is just right for the game. It uses a level system like most games where your team will be a certain level and so will be the enemies, levelling up increases health and damage. My problem is levelling up takes ages as you cant beat enemies that are a few levels higher than you and side quests give only a few hundred exp and you will be needing thousands and thousands in the later levels. All in all though the plot of xenoblade 2 is simple but is extremely fun and thorough with many plot twists and engaging events. The battle system is unique and there are many endless combos and tactics. The post game presuming you havent completed everything prior is lengthy, levelling up blades on the affinity chart can be tedius and tiring and the side quests are an absolute pleasure. A true work of art. Expand

Let's talk about the cons first, people love cons.
    1. The map/fast travelling/navigation has taken a step down compare to the last game. I don't understand why they have decided to change it this way and it's kind of irritating.
    2. Some people says the it's noisy during combat and the characters shouted a few lines over and over. I sincerely agree that it is a bit noisy and it gets annoying during farming , ie a lot of trivial fights. But they are some audio clues of what your teammates are doing. This is useful for setting up chains for high damage.
    3. The story is straight forward. Not many surprises, typical anime plot. You know, the main character is always hot-headed, shout loudly, reckless but things turned out alright for them. I am not a huge fan for this story type but I enjoyed naruto , one piece , etc. So (shrug) , I am completely fine with the story. They have some cheeky/service scenes that are a bit sexual but that is also expected from Japanese lololol.
    4. The tutorials are like a one time thing. I cannot find the instructions afterwards. The item descriptions/intel are like a two line text. A little bit of translations are wonky or simply wrong and actually mislead me going all around the world. (or I am too stupid to understand)
    5. The graphics are not the best. Have a bit FPS issues and blur especially in hand held mode. But i am not expecting great graphics like PS4 so I will live with that.

    For the pros part:
    1. Great BGM
    2. Enormous map for exploration, nice scenery at some places
    3. simple at start and slowly going into complex combat system. THIS is where things get interesting and makes XC2 differs from other JRPG. If it is another ARPG or another turn-based combat system, I wouldn't be loving it.
I don't know why people brag about the combat. If you get one shot, you can come back later. I get randomly one shot by some fxxking lv 8x monkey wandering around when I was lv 10. So what ? There is no real penalty for dying anyway. I can wait until it is gone before walking through the area again.
Some people are complaining it takes too long to fight a monster, even if it is the same level as all 3 team members. Or the combat is boring, you just stand there, don't even have to look at the screen etc etc. In my opinion, that is simply because those people don't want to use their brain during combat or didn't upgrade their blades or use brain in general. There are tutorials about how different chain works to maximize damage output. If you missed/forgot the tutorials, just search on the internet please.
There are so many things you can plan ahead before combat. The typical rpg stuff like team compositions, equipment for blade and driver, elements of blades (planning which driver is going for the 1st tier ultimate, 2nd tier, etc) , arts of driver (making sure I can execute the driver chain).
During combat, you will be constantly calculating the CD of your own arts and your partners. Since you cannot control your teammates, the noisy shouting from teammates is a way of communication. They try to tell you that they are using arts. Observe their animation and determine which arts have been used and on CD for the next ? numbers of normal atk. i think this is the key to complete the driver chain. Not to mention the elemental chains for blades. People need to chain the ultimates for higher damage. If the chained ultimates happened during driver chain, that is even more damage. Of course you can just throw ultimates out randomly and you will probably end up with no elemental orbs for chain burst.
I won't go too deeply into combat and just briefly introduce things I normally have to consider before and during combat.

Overall, I think this is a game that require a lot of planning ahead and calculating. It also requires a bit of fast reaction but not as much as ARPGs. This is not for those people who are looking for hack and slash or some no brainer relaxing story telling game. If people are complaining about the combat system being too simple, low damage output etc etc, I sincerely suggest them go play easy difficulty in Dynasty Worriers. You can run around and press a single normal atk button and win the whole thing. After all, I cannot stop people playing XC2 like a monkey, but at least I hope people can give an honest review and let others truly understand what they should be expecting from the game. Rather than some pure emotional nonsense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing the Xenoblade Series since the first. I Loved 1 and I Liked X for 2 I would Say I Liked it as well.

First of all story wise the story is okay. Not bad actually there is of course some cliches. But these are cliches that I can't live without.

Game play Wise when I first watched it on the trailer I said to myself that is one long fight for just a regular enemy. When I was able to play it it was really still long just to finish a fight. However as I progress as I Get the skills on how the mechanics work. The fights are becoming more enjoyable that I barely notice is long. Sometimes fights are actually fast now if you get the trick.

It can be overwhelming at the start because the way they show the tutorial is just a text screen that you need to follow. I believe it could've been better but that's just me.

There is again a lot of quest but mostly was just tedious for me but I did like the side quest for the blades. Except you Ursula. God That merc mission is so annoying. you'll basically just send Ursula all the time rather than using her.

I also hated the field skill which kept you changing your blades from time to time. wish it could've been permanent and you don't have to apply the field skill again.

Going to music. I still prefer the Musics on first but I did liked some on Xenoblade 2 but not much that I could explain how good it is.

All in all it is still a great game. When I complete the game a hole was left in my heart as I typed this review.

But now I am going to Torna. I am not interested on the story 500 years ago but I need something to fill the void in my heart. I am hoping this will be the one to do it.

BTW my favorite blade is Agate. I love her accent and her personality. I also love her Japanese VA but I would still go back to her English VA.

also this should've been waifu Chronicles 2 instead. Not that I'm complaining but I would like to see more Male blades.

As my first game in the Xenoblade series, I was a little skeptical at first. However after buying and playing the game to completion in about 60 hours, I have to say I'm in love with it.

    Story:
The story is amazing, if not a bit cringy at times. It follows a young salvager named Rex who through certain circumstances becomes the master of an Aegis named Pyra and now must fight to fulfill Pyra's wish of going to Elysium.

The first half of the story is a little slow, but by no means boring. It's the latter half of the story that really gets interesting. I could barely put the console down in the second half of the story because of how mind blowing it was. That's not an exaggeration, whilst playing put aside any theories you have about the ending, because you're likely to be surprised anyway.

Overall i enjoyed the story, it seemed to follow the idea of "you can't do everything alone" a point that is reiterated to Rex by numerous other characters. This phrase is rather important in understanding why the ending happened like it did. However, I will say that you must remember that Rex is a child (15) and as such he is a bit naive and childish, but this doesn't really distract from the story since his strong will more than makes up for it.

    Combat:
The combat in this game is incredible, but can be a bit complex. I've seen some reviewers stating the combat is "slow", but this is only for the start of the game. You can eventually upgrade your character so you can chain driver arts together without a pause in between and even upgrade to the point where you can use all your driver arts at the beginning rather than building them up first.

Remembering all the specialist terms is difficult, but gets more natural the longer you play. By the end of the game I was doing chain attacks with 4 orbs (I've heard some people got up to 6 orbs) and doing ridiculous damage due to the multipliers. The ability to seal an enemies abilities by doing a specific combo is a bold, but genius move. With the right strategy you can seal an enemies strongest ability and then decimate them with a chain attack.

    Graphics:
Now this is one of the reasons it doesn't get a 10 from me. The graphics in handheld mode aren't great, in return the graphics in docked mode are pretty good. My suggestion is to play docked for the story and undocked for farming. I don't really mind the graphics that much since the gameplay, music and story more than make up for it.

    Music:
I don't need to say much, Takahashi stated that all the music they recorded for this game was about 1TB in size, showing just how much they wanted to get it right. The music is absolutely unforgettable, especially the ending music and the ending title screen music which is so good I actually have it on my phone for when I want to relax.

    Post Game:
At the moment I'm level 69 (almost 70) I plan to get every blade, then get them all to S+ affinity and then start NG+ to get the other blades. I don't think I've ever put this much time into a JRPG before, not even FF or DQ.

In the beginning of the game you have very high level unique enemies wandering around the starter zones, I guarantee they'll kill you a few times. However, at end game you can go and teach them a lesson! Furthermore, you have superbosses which are very high level/difficulty bosses that are quite similar to FFXIV extreme trials. You better hope you have a good strategy prepared before the fight.

    Note:
After looking at the negative reviews, I find it hard to believe any of them are actually serious. Quite a lot of the reviews just outright attack anyone who likes this game which is completely inappropriate and makes me think that perhaps they're just there to troll people.

    Conclusion:
This is a prime example of the way JRPG's should be done.

    The Cons:

    - The English voice dubs it's not good because it's out of sync frequently. Additionally, sometimes the voice actors have no feeling when you compare to what the game is trying to make you feel (but I have to admit, they try really hard to be good, and most of the time they are). However, you can download for FREE the Japanese dubs.
    - I feel that many variables in the game (for your gameplay and customization), are not necessary and they could have made something better. It's a gigantic pain to upgrade your blades sometimes (Kill X of some monster, Talk to X people). Things like that.
    - Some of you may like this, but I am not a big fan: the cut scenes are too frequent for me. You get some space to be free, and when you least expect, you get caught in the middle of [another] 5-10 min cutscene. It gets annoying since this kind of RPG is more enjoyable when you have more freedom. But man, they are good.

    The Good:

    - Great graphics and AMAZING artwork. If you love the artwork, like me, I strongly advice playing attention to everything and even buying the limited edition, that comes with a 220 pages art book.
    - Great Story, full of emotional moments. The Story is genius because it gets you off guard. You THINK you are getting all, that you understand the story and it is a standard teen story. BUT IT IS NOT. Its full of emotional moments and deep thinking. The more you play, the more you get deep into de characters and the world.
    - Again, this is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played in my life.
    - Extremely fun characters to get to know, and nice pacing.
    - Good combat, but could be better. Nevertheless, it is still good. The Blades Mechanics is alot of fun and it is new, different and original. It gets betters as you get more Blades.
    - Awesome cutscenes, although frequent.
    - Great NPCs (their personalities are a little cliche, but they are charismatic), nice party choices.
    - Beautiful, amazing idea of the whole world. You will really feel that you are in a new world.
    - The Blades Mechanics are a great gameplay structure.

Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an amazing game that you must have for your Switch Library. It reminds an old RPG, that nice, good pacing, slow-building worlds and great character and artwork design. Like a cross of Final Fantasy VI artwork (SNES), Final Fantasy XII and X gameplay (PS2), with a mix of Dragon Quest pacing of the story. But all recreated with better technology and less clunky play. It does bring new elements to the table (the Blades mechanics). You will get some of that classical personalities in Japanese anime: the serious character, the funny, the edgy girl, the hero, etc, but they are charismatic, thus, becoming enjoyable. The story gets better as you progress, getting to the point you think "Man, this is awsome". Dont miss it, people.

It's somewhat bad, they fit the dialogue to the british dub and made dumb changes with names, like morag and tora calling rex 'rex-rex' instead of 'big bro' (aniki). However i'm glad nothing plot relevant was changed, the personality of characters seemed intact, I love the entire cast, even the two characters I hated got a really good redemption. I also really appreciate the dual audio and applaud the devs for including it. Because of some minor annoyances like field skills affecting story progression and my playtime glitching,

    I rate Xenoblade Chronicles a 9/10.

I think that Monolith Software is finding the balance between story and characters, my biggest issue with XC1 is that the characters didn't stand on par with the story, they were too generic, but here, even when they represent some cliches, they're likable and charming in their own way. The music is good and some of the tracks are amazing, they remind me a little of crono trigger, but a lot of them are kind of generic. The combat is not as amazing as XC1 or XCX but is still good and it has its own personality thanks to the blades system which is so refreshing, if you're into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure the blades are practically stands, also speaking of JoJo, one of the writers (Soraya Saga) is a big JoJo fan, so I will say that some of the character's backstories are very dark and similar to the ones that appear in parts 7 and 8 of that said manga, but that's just a baseless theory anyway. My issues with this game are that a lot of the side content is way too boring and generic as the back entries, and it needs a lot of mindless backtracking, the menu and hud are better than past entries but not for much, they need to sort that thing by the next entry. As for the blades, is an amazing system but it also depends a lot on luck, in order to unlock all the extra blades, you rely on certain items that summon by chance rare blades or normal blades, it seems to me more like a P2W mechanic and it also depends a lot on grinding, so I didn't like it at all. At last, the localization team seems to make a lot of changes in the names and some of the dialogue and is pretty noticeable when you play it with Japanese audio, and as far of fan service and anime-japanese things here is a lot of that, I like it but if you're easily triggered by cleavage and non-practical female outfits you may pass on this one.

I think that this entry expands on the universe set by the first game and is better in almost everything, but is still a little far to become a classic, that being said when you finish the 12 hour tutorial is pretty damn fun onwards.

I had a good time ! The story is awesome, and graphics are beautiful... but animations are a disaster (WTF!). A very good JRPG

    I like :

    - Beautiful Graphics
    - Lifetime
    - the blades ;-) however it's very difficult to understand how the attribution system works
    - Combos

    I don't like :
    - animations WTF style
    - secondary quests... totally useless

The bad: Let's just get this out of the way. There has only been 2 flaws I've had with this game, and luckily if you are playing this game in 2018 or beyond, there is a very safe simple solution.

The map / directions in this game are absurdly vague. I caught myself wandering around the map trying to get to the key point for a quest for sometimes 60min+. There's no reason for the game to be so vague about where to go or how to get there. Perhaps set mini-check points to help guide me up a secret path? But that complaint was easily dealt with by hopping online and checking where to go. Is it cheating? Sure. But the game can be otherwise very annoying if you let this one particular thing plague your session.

The other bad thing about this game is how much there is to learn. I made it a good 70 hours into the game before I really started to understand two things that made the game infinitely easier.

Thing 1: Learn the Break -> Topple -> Launch -> Smash combos. Figure out which blades can do them, and abuse them. Make sure you are either in a level 1 or level 2 phase of an elemental combo and you'll do bonus damage with the Topple->Launch->Smash abilities.

The Smash piece, during a level 1 or 2 elemental combo phase does very high damage that I simply didn't understand until much later. Required tech to know? Not really, but does it make the game MUCH faster and easier? Absolutely. They teach you it once and then never really come back to it. Always look for ways to pull off this combo. I usually have the main character equipped with blades that can handle the Topple->Launch->Smash part and have my teammates set up with plenty of weapon/skill combos that have Break and Topple to get the combo started often.

Next is chain attack. I don't know why, but I sort of ignored this mechanic through most of my play-through. It wasn't until I watched a video about the game's mechanics that I really understood ...

You can pump up chain attack damage+crit ... to unbelievable numbers. Going from hitting for 2-5k damage to hitting for 900k damage is ... big? And it turns out ... if you KILL the opponent with the chain attack and enter the overkill mode ... you get BONUS loot, exp and skill points depending on how much you overkilled the enemy by.

Chain attacks make enemies/bosses that have an 'explode' like mechanic trivial. You can generally kill most bosses (if you are set to do bonus chain damage) with 1-2 orbs available at almost any stage of the fight. I'm at the end game and every fight my goal is to finish 1-2 elemental combos to build orbs (make sure they end with different elements) orbs and then just go into my chain attack as soon as possible. Or if I'm really greedy I can ALMOST kill the boss/enemy and then pop the chain at the end for maximum overkill.

Either way ... these two, easily overlooked, mechanics make combat 100% more interesting and interactive. Also speeds up combat by a lot to just be able to end a fight after doing only 30-50% of the boss's life. And if you beef up chain attacks? You are looking at being able to 1 shot most things in the game with no orbs.

    ====

Game mechanics aside. This game is wonderful. The characters are awesome, I personally enjoyed all the voice overs (during combat can get annoying), and you never really get the sense that you cannot die, which I often get in other games if I take a little time to power level.

The side quests are fun, discovering new blades is pretty cool (i wish I had them all unlocked but farming cores isn't too bad later on) ... the first 40 hours I would have said this game was a 7/10. Then I started to understand the mechanics more, combat sped up as a result and I started to really get into the story. Not that the story was bad up til this point, but it was hard to get into the game when combat was going so slow (I was just spamming abilities til stuff died).

The last 70 hours have been pure, enjoyable addiction.

Expand

While certainly there, the game is a lot more than that. The combat is incredibly deep, though it takes a while to understand everything, so I suggest looking up a guide for understanding the combat. The story is incredible, with one of the best casts I've ever seen in a JRPG with incredibly well written likable characters and tons of crazy plot twists to keep to engaged. The gameplay, while is a bit bloating mechanics wise, is also really fun. The game is massive, with an insane number of things to do and minigames to take part in along with a gigantic world to explore. The music is also god-like and one of the best in gaming, surpassing even the first xenoblade chronicles. However, the game does have some flaws. The beginning is very rough and tutorial heavy, with all of the combat mechanics not unlocking until early chapter 4. (the game has 10 chapters) The game also has annoying gacha mechanics. Luckily you cannot pay for more rolls with real money, (unless you count the free rolls you get with the DLC, which includes tons of other things) so that's a plus. It also allows every new playthrough to be unique with the different blades you get, (basically JoJo Stands or Persona) which determine movesets and such. However, if you are going for 100%, you will need EVERY unique blade, which is hell to get. Another issue is the field skills, which arbitrarily lock off locations (including story-required areas) until you get the specified amount of field skills, which require a lot of tedious grinding and maybe a bit (or a lot of) luck. The last issue is that for about half the game you have an incomplete team with one of the characters part of this small 3-person team being a gimmick character that a lot of people don't like who requires a whole bunch of grinding to make good. You finally get your forth party member at the beginning of Chapter 5, though they don't stay around too often due to plot (constantly leaving and joining the party during Chapters 4, 5, and 6) and don't permanently join you until halfway through Chapter 6. The fifth and final party member is even worse, not joining until the beginning of Chapter 6, a little more than halfway through the game. Other than those small issues the game is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it for any fans of RPGs, open world games, or anime. The lore is also super interesting and I highly recommend looking into it if your interested. It shows a whole new perspective on the game you'll never notice otherwise. 8.7/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start out by saying that this game has a fair amount of problems, and that I would not recommend this to everyone. That said, this is the perfect game for me.

THE game has a deep and interesting STORY. I particularly loved the main blades', Morag's and Jin's stories, as they develop from just "bad" or "good" guys, to people you care for and have sympathy for, as they were all put in difficult situations they didn't know what to do about. I also love how the story introduces a little comedy whenever the game goes too deep in on a topic such as the meaning of life, morality, the death of loved ones etc. as this keeps the game from becoming depressing, but still allows the game to develop a deep and interesting story that shows that the developers cared about the player.

THE COMBAT in this game was also great, albeit not introduced in the best way (the game uses a LOT of text prompts, and doesn't give you the option to re- read about a feature you have already been explained once before). I especially liked how the game allows you to have your very own combat style, being able to choose (as long as you grind a bit) exactly what blades you want to use, with the choice of in total six different types of tanks, healers and attack blades. I, myself loved how the game lets you exploit canceling the auto attack of pyra/ mythra, to instead allow you to recharge your arts super fast, rather than doing a bit more damage. The elemental attacks and combos, their ability to seal away enemy attacks, combined with chain attacks, all while the combat is in real time, makes each combat encounter an expertly crafted strategy game, while keeping the pace of combat quite high. The enemies' abilities to have different attack styles, just like yourself, and adapt to your attack style makes each combat encounter feel slightly different, and keeps combat fun through the entire game (although I could see how it might feel a bit grindy, as this keeps each battle going for longer, and you'll be in combat a LOT).

SIDE QUESTS, however, get VERY grindy, and are not too original or too fun to play through if you are not a total completionist (like me). However, I still enjoyed the grind a lot, and loved levelling up blades and feeling the pure satisfaction of every affinity chart I finished (what can I say, the combat is just fun enough, and the stories in some cases justified the grind).

Lastly, this game has BY FAR the BEST SOUNDTRACK I have ever heard in any game that I have played (but then, again, I haven't played that many other games compared to most people). The environments are also extremely beautiful, and that's enough said.

Managing all the different system for each of your characters can be enjoyable at times, but more often than not felt like busywork. Figuring out how to use the battle system is unclear and it takes several hours until you unlock the mechanics which actually make combat fun. Many of the characters are over-designed, and frankly look a bit hideous. The side quests are serviceable, but never engaged me nearly as much as the main story content. However, apart from one or two pacing issues and a few inconsistent vocal performances, I love just about everything else. The story is relatively intricate and deep, and leads to some very effective emotional beats. The characters are (for the most part) quite well defined and enjoyable to interact with. The soundtrack is outstanding, and contains some of my favorite songs from any video game I've ever played. The battle system can be tremendously fun in the latter half, and has some very unique and satisfying mechanics. The worlds are vast and enjoyable to explore. Visually it's incredibly good, the substandard resolution is a shame, but it doesn't actively detract from the experience while playing. It is unfortunate that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 doesn't contain the level of consistency seen in it's predecessor, but it is still highly worthwhile. In fact, the high points in 2 are often far higher than those in 1, even if the overall quality doesn't quite match up. I'd recommend trying Xenoblade 2 out, if you can get past the flaws it's one of the most unique and beautiful games out there. Expand

This game isn't perfect, but it's hands down the most fun game I've played on the Switch so far. The story and characters are engaging, and there's so much to do. Difficulty is perfect for me, challenging at times but certainly not frustrating: if you get stuck you can always gear and level up to be better prepared. Amazing game. The story of the game is great, it discussed some deep themes and isnt afraid to delve into darker territories. Its filled with unexpected twists and turns and truly explores the characters’ personalities, putting them at their lowest before breaking through with a magnificent crescendo.

This is accompanied by perhaps the best soundtrack of any game ive ever played. The lyrical tracks are hit-or-miss, but the exploration themes and especially cutscene music (such as Counterattack or the violin version of Drifting Souls) are unforgettable and i still listen to them despite having finished the game over a year ago. The voice acting is surprisingly good for an anime rpg. Some characters are just plain bad (the protagonist in particular cannot scream to save his life, but is otherwise decent) but the majority give life to their characters, some even surpassing their japanese counterparts. Nia, Gramps, and Malos come to mind-their english VAs going as far as to completely change how you view the character.

The combat is a hit-or-miss. Not everyone likes it but those that do like it a lot. Its real-time instead of turn-based, which is always welcome imo. Your character does basic attacks on their own, while its up to you to control their arts (skill) usage, positioning, and combos. It starts out slow but as they start rolling out more features and your arts start recharging more often due to being higher level it gets entertaining. Its also more about strategy than skill-how you set up your party with blades and accessories is just as important as how you perform in battle.

The game is moderately difficult, but becomes nearly impossible if you dont grasp the convoluted upgrade mechanics (personally i didnt have a problem with it, but you may need to look up tutorials if it gets confusing). There are some difficulty spikes here and there in the story that require either grinding or altering your strategy, but otherwise it isnt that difficult if you make sure to keep your level up. If it gets too difficult though, you can always switch to easy mode (or even customise the difficulty, if you have the dlc)

The world-building in the game is fantastic. It all takes place on the backs of titans-giant living beings that are dying out. Due to this, all the different titans you explore have vastly different scenery-all of it breathtaking. I found myself exploring just for the sake of seeing more of the magnificent world theyve crafted. This is slightly hampered by skill-checks, which require you to have certain blades to get through the environment, but it doesnt intrude too much with the overall experience.

The performance is fairly stable, and the resolution isnt too bad most of the time, but you can get as low as 15 fps if battles get too chaotic, and the resolution may dip, making the beautiful scenery look like pixelated mush. Play docked if you can.

Finally, yes the game has fanservice. A lot of it. This turned me off at the beginning, making it difficult to enjoy cutscenes, but you eventually get used to it. If its any comfort, all the fanservice blades have significant character that can be explored in their side quests, and can be completely ignored (besides the main cast) if you dont like their designs, which are great if you disregard the boob-windows and low-cut outfts.

It took me about 80 hours to finish the story but i ended up spending nearly 300 hours enjoying the game. Its a must have for any jrpg fan, and anyone who enjoys epic stories, breathtaking world to explore and sweeping orchestras that stick with you long after youve put the game down.

Awesome game once you make it over thr 20 hour or so learning curve. It helps keep things fresh but also frustrates at the same time.

At some point it all clicks and honestly turns into a pretty epic game.

I absolutely LOVE the story, characters, environments, music, and above all else, the battle system of this game. I even like the gacha mechanics to get rare blades. Xenoblade 2 is, along with its predecessor, an absolute masterpiece! I deduct 1 point from the score because the menu becomes a mess after you get a load of items. Give me the option to MANUALLY organize my stuff, Monolith...

I never was a fan of JRPG. This game changed that. The setting is awesome, the story intriding and the music absolutly fantastic. The battle system can be quite complex and sometimes the characters drift a little bit to much into anime tropes. Also the sidequest are mew most of the time. But the main story is long enough to compensate for that.

Vast world, beautiful story, a really big adventure. in the top 3 JRPG I've played since the first opus. It's not perfect but none of its flaws come from laziness but rather from devs' artistic/ technical choices. The final product being, something really unique, polished, with a will and a message of its own.

Expand

I would strongly recommend to buy it together with the expansion, so you receive some nice perks early on (I think the expansion is a humbler, but better game overall)

    Pros:
+The story: a classical story of heroes and love which keeps getting complex as it evolves.
+ The music: it is unbelievable how well they paired each theme with each part of the story and cutscene. You get really emotional
+ Content: a lot to be done, if you like exploration and grinding, welcome to your paradise. Many different enemies, each of which feels different
+ Combat system: it becomes increasingly complex as the game goes on, but at the very end you feel the mastery, and it is very satisfying. I realized I learned the full complexity of the battle system when I faced the final boss. You feel.. oh WOW now I know how to play this! It was such the feeling that I decided to replay the game

    Cons:

    - Performance: it is a bit laggy, there are FPS drops and clear popping in large areas. Fortunately the combat doesn't require you to make frame-perfect moves so they aren't a big issue
    - Cutscenes are too long: some cutscenes are GREAT, but some are just unnecessary and become too repetitive, especially in the mid-game.
-Too much grinding: developing your characters to their full potential (which is by no means a requirement) requires to complete some requirements which may take a loooong time to complete
    -Too much micromanagement

I know that it sounds like I'm hyping this game up way too much but it's that good.
I'm sure if you're reading reviews you have probably already read all the good things about the game and want to look at the cons.
If I were to try and list all the cons of the game I would say:

The English voice acting isn't perfect and the lip syncing is just way off, I personally never really had much of a problem with it but if it sounds like something you don't like don't worry, there is free dlc on the Nintendo e-shop which can change the language (including the original Japanese) and you can keep English subtitles. Also all the voices in the English voice option are from the Uk.

Sometimes after you fast travel it can take a minute for some of the textures to load in, minor but I feel like it should be said.

There are skills on blades called field skills where you can affect things out of battle on the massive open world the game has to offer. My complaint with this is that in one section of the game it is required to have some of these unlocked on your blade to progress the story.

For some people they might not be able to get past the slow beginning when It comes to the combat but trust me when I say that it gets REALLY GOOD later on.

The game is massive and some might think that there's too much to do at once and get overwhelmed.

One blade in particular is so hard to get and you have a really low chance of getting it. (People who played the game know who I'm talking about).

These are really the only real issues some might have with the game in my opinion.

Great sequel to Xenoblade 1, it was big shoes to fill and Monolith delivered. The story has a slow start, but is compelling overall with fantastic concluding chapters. The only complaint I'll list here is the English voice acting of Rex. He has a pleasant speaking voice, but could not show emotion at all. This caused some powerful scenes to fall flat which was tragic.

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat.
