The best RPG on the switch right now by far. Though it isn't fair to compare it to Zelda or Mario, it is a blast to play. The visuals take a moment to get used to but work well, and the score is outstanding. Must play.

Expand

Xenoblade 2 is one amazing game and goes beyond my expectations.
I have one minor complaint and that is that the resolution is a little low making the edges of pretty much anything other then the UI and menu's blocky.
Perhaps an update could fix this with more optimization however I doubt that will ever happen knowing Nintendo. The game itself runs fine at a constant and stable 30FPS.

The game itself runs fine at a constant and stable 30FPS.
The attention to detail is also very high close to the standards of BOTW.

Story and characters are very interesting and whenever something epic or sad happens I care for the characters which I cannot say about many games.

Soundtrack and sounds are beyond amazing voice over (English) is a bit strange and took me a while to get used to. (Rex the main character speaks British) I think this is the 1st time I ever heard a main character from an anime game speak British. Not even Black Butler (The anime) came close to as British as this.

But all and all everything is very high qaulity.
I give this game an 8-10.

    SUMMARY:
    Story and characters are great.
    The music is amazing.
The English voice over takes some time getting used to.
And the resolution is a little on the low side.
    The game runs stable otherwise!

The world is huge, although not as big as Xenoblade X, but it's sectioned up into different titans that are each fully explorable and its easy to lose yourself in the majesty of it all.

You can't go and compare this game to x, but seeing as it's been named a sequel to the original title, there's bound to be some comparing.

You will definitely find a lot more challenge in this game than you will in the original. The enemies are less merciful and even sometimes aim directly at showing you your place. If you think you're just going to speed through this game, you'd better think again. That level number matters and so does your equipment. Though, that can be said for both this and the original Xenoblade.

The combat is made infinitely more complex by the ability to cancel certain arts and cancel all auto attacks. There is also the ability to quickly charge some Blade Arts by simply abusing that cancel of auto attack. You coulld call this a glich, if you wanted, but with how the animation runs at times, I highly doubt they didn't know it was there. Sometimes, I'm also left to wonder how my CPU Team can still charge faster than I can, reaching tier three special far faster than should be possible otherwise.

Onto the skills themselves, your positioning once again feels extremely important for most skills. Some of it is also watching and making sure your team can follow-up to your set ups, which is telegraphed better than it ever was in the original Xenoblade, due to the fact that these skills have a tendency to be one blade and not any other, unless you want that. That's not to say that the AI is flawless, as sometimes it can go off and do something else entirely that what you planned for, but that's with everything that has them.

As for the element that's more or less absent entirely... there is no proper Armor System like there has been for the original and X. I don't understand this decision, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

I can't lie. I don't much care for Rex or Pyra's... well... "eye-catching" attire... It's fan service, but it's not the kind you want. However, it couldn't and didn't ruin the game for me.

Now for the Graphics, music, voice acting, etc.

The artists knew exactly what sort of art style they were going for, even as the art style seems to be implemented by a mix of several artists. It's anime as heckle and that's what you should go in expecting. The special effects used express this fervently, as well as make some environments more complete than they ever could have been without. Honestly, I can't see why people have a problem with the fact that this is the feel of the game, being that Xenoblade has always been anime-esque, but to each their own.

The music is INCREDIBLE. I can't praise it enough, nor get sick of it. I actually have several places in which I have left the system running merely to hear the music alone for an extended period of time. If there is any song at all that is "bad" in the entire ost, it's only because I favor others over it.

... Now for the ENGLISH voices. The guys over at Monolith knew how bad the English casting was. I say that because they put the infinitely more professional Japanese dub over as FREE Day One DLC.

I went in hoping that the rumors were false, but I found myself HATING Rex's English actor simply for the fact that he can not scream worth a cent. I sort of want to know why he got the roll of Rex, but there are plenty of other english voices that don't match their bodies or ages. So, I believe I can denominate the fact that it was simply the wrong people handling VA casting....

THANKFULLY, the Japanese Dub is better in nearly every way, making for a far more pleasing result. I say nearly, because you can't understand what they say in the after fight conversations unless you speak the language yourself and find yourself confused about the Japanese names used, for the most part. For example: Pyra is the red-hair heroine's English name, but Homura is her Japanese name.

As for the story, all I WILL to say is this: Monolith Soft has done it again and I LOVE them for it. 9/10

Well it's my favourite out of the 3 Xenoblade games.
The combat is more complex than the end game skell combat bore, and it's cycles are more varied and fun to execute than optimal skill cycling in XBC1.
Visually it's as inspired as ever with some epic worlds and environs. While it does look it's best when docked. Handheld mode, for a handheld game looks and runs amazingly. Great

Great musical theme's overall, a big step up from XBX.

Overall it really does feel like the next XBC game, taking everything XBC did and improving on it, only real gripe from me is they took out the collectapedia, but perhaps not spending 5 hours looking for the right item is a change that will save many a frustration, even if it was rewarding in the end.

I'm not going to bore you with story. Here are the points that you probably most care about.

It is true that the graphics are degraded in mobile mode vs. docked. But that should be obvious. It's not enough to impact the game negatively except for framerate drops which seem to happen more frequently than you might expect.

Music is a standout with excellent compositions and presentation.

Unlike Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, this is truly a JRPG in the finest sense of the word. There's no "MMO-lite" feelings here. If you want that, this isn't the game for you.

This is an extremely complex game to master. There's just a lot of things going on - and while the game does things to help you out, it doesn't change that there's a LOT to remember and master.

If you're not a fan of the way games used to be, with nice, lengthy, meaty cutscenes as a reward for your hard work, skip the game. There are a LOT of cutscenes and they're long. I love this. People who like games like The Witcher won't. You've been warned; don't come on here complaining and putting negative reviews. There are videos all over the place and every reviewer has called this out, if you didn't do research that's your fault.

I'm not really a fan of the battle system. I'm fine with the "Final Fantasy XII" auto battle. What bothers me is the healing mechanics. There's no way to just adhoc use an item to heal. You either have to steal one (which doesn't heal enough) or be healed by Arts (which doesn't happen frequently enough). The first boss I fought mopped the floor with me simply because there was no way to heal. This seems to just be random chance, because the second time around I beat him having changed nothing in strategy.

Which brings me to the other negative - unbalanced difficulty and damage. To me, something's wrong if the first boss you come to is stun multi-hitting you for 200HP when you only have 800HP. Then you walk through the next three bosses, come to a boss who kills you out of nowhere. Dinosaurs that can take you out in less than a minute when you're their same level, yet the final boss of the game gets wasted faster than the giant gorilla running around Gormott. It's a joke. I struggle to think of another game with difficulty this unbalanced.

Lastly, the concept of "armor" is poor. It basically creates artificial difficulty, because you can't properly equip your characters the way you'd like to. Most of the accessories you can equip don't make a significant dent in the aforementioned obscene damage instances. Leveling up happens only at hotels, which means if you're out and about for hours, you might be underleveled simply because you can't get back to a town before fighting the boss. Much of your strength comes from the affinity charts which are tedious to fill out for the most powerful characters in the game. Not nearly as tedious as FFXII's but close enough.

I also dislike the RNG mechanic for summoning. You basically are rolling dice for every Rare Blade summon, meaning it'll take a LONG time to get them all. I finished the game at 232 hours still missing Vale because I lost patience trying to get her. It shouldn't be like that. They really need to fix that to where Legendary Cores are a guaranteed summon. Even Chaos Rings 3 wasn't this bad.

Summary: I like the game. Much better than 1/3D by far. I never played X because the Wii was crap. This game feels like it puts things back right, and is a welcome breath of fresh air in a desert of old school "J" RPGs.

This game is a titan of a game, pun intended. In my opinion, this AAA title contains the best Nintendo exclusive story on the switch. There’s a good chance it’ll remain that way until the end of the switch’s lifetime. Maybe it’s sequel will outdo it. I hadn’t played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, but you don’t need to in order to enjoy the game because the stories are separate.

I hadn’t played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, but you don’t need to in order to enjoy the game because the stories are separate.

    Pros
    Pretty environments
    Likeable characters
    Unique strategy elements
Rewards for exploring the depths of the game
Players that like the game have the option to purchase the Torna DLC, which is arguably the best DLC available on Switch

    Cons
The game suffers from being overcomplicated
    Suggestive themes can get distracting
Lower rated blades have a painfully bland design
Not all blades are created equal

The graphics are enjoyable, but some things, like the menu, won’t age well. There are two menus that players work with, and it can be confusing to navigate. Additionally, there are too many characters with suggestive themes. To the point where it’s just gross. I can live with characters like Pyra and Mythra. I can’t, I just cannot stand some of them because the focus is on the suggestive theme—and it doesn’t match the personality of the character at all. The good news there is that you aren’t forced to use them. It's just a shame to me to find a rare blade with a relatively cool design, only to realize that I can’t enjoy it. Going along with blade design, only rare (5 star) blades have a unique look. 1-4 star blades might have a unique name, but have an identical color scheme, so when you get a new blade, most of the time, it will look identical to all your other ones.

The other problem with this game is how oddly complicated it is. It wouldn’t be hard to learn if the game would just tell it to you straight. But it doesn’t. It gives you one time to learn a tutorial (where they throw a bunch of information at you and say here it all is, remember it) and then it moves on. It keeps introducing new game mechanics throughout the game, each time putting an emphasis on it and telling you why it’s important. You go through a good portion of the game like this. Then, you’re expected to remember it all. Can’t remember? You have to locate a hint merchant and buy the right hint off of them. You can get around this issue by using the internet.

Battle requires you to press buttons just before an attack lands. Different blades have different abilities to aid Rex and his companions. I’m disappointed that there is a best “healer”, “tank”, etc. It just means that there needed to be a little more love put into the other rare blades.

Like many other JRPGs of the same genre, characters feel the need to shout out the name of the move as they’re doing it. It’s weird, but I don’t mind it. You can count on Nintendo to add fun resource gathering methods. There are secret areas to find, rare blades to collect, and skill trees to complete. If you’re a person who likes checklists, this game will make your day.

Make no mistake, this is a big game. If you’re like me, and you like a good, uplifting storyline, then you’ll like this game. The graphics are passable, it was only bothersome to me on a personal level. As long as you understand what’s going on in the game and what you can actually do, you’ll get the most out of your experience. It really deserves a higher score as it's a great game, but it is inhibited by unnecessary quirks.
    Tips:
In-game vocabulary gets confusing (don’t even get me started on the phrase “attack canceling”). Drivers are humans, blades are weapons with spirits in them—or something like that lol. Drivers and blades level up differently. Blades level up as you use their various abilities. And to increase a blade’s skill tree, you have to do certain things as specified on the skill you want to upgrade. I went through half the game not knowing how important it was to use a party gauge attack to end fights for better loot and additional experience. I didn’t know until the end how to upgrade blades which meant a lot of meaningless grind at the very end of the game. And I also didn’t know that the orbs showed up for elemental combos on the upper part of the screen, hinting which blade to utilize next, which is a big part of strategy as well. Hope that saves at least one newcomer’s time. Not by minutes, but by hours.

If you are on the fence about buying this game, I will first tell you to just buy the game. This will be a 10/10 for me, but let me explain why. I will also say that the game affected me so much that, this is my first review ever on metacritic. The game is so good I had to personally stop, sign up for metacritic and review this game.

I have been waiting for a JRPG that has a beautiful world, awesome soundtrack and lovable characters. This is what final fantasy 15 should have been. I have been waiting for a game like this since final fantasy 10 and final fantasy 8. The romance, the story, the character development. The gorgeous animations and cut scenes (in game). The music gets me so pumped and the best part are the cut scenes in between play sessions and chapter finales.

I have never been so engrossed in a game before, feeling like i'm actually there. The mysteries behind the world and the addicting gameplay.

My review is not a professional one, I'm not going to break down everything one by one. I'll just say whats off the top of my mind and in my heart.. But the xeno team NAILED it with this release. GOD, please, make xenoblade chronicles 3 the same.

I believe i'm still close to the beginning and I already clocked in at 25 hours played. I'll tell you this though, take the time and learn the combat, cause once you get going, you get going! Once the combat makes sense, you really have a blast of a time, especially when they start introducing new stuff.

My rambling is just about done, there's no doubt about it, but for anyone interested in JRPG like final fantasy series. This is what final fantasy should have been, in terms of story and lovable character. I'll admit, I'm a guy and I'm a schmuck when it comes to ROMANCE in my JRPG. It's a element that you must have and XENOBLADE chronicles really nailed it with that one too. LOVE IT!

Now as I return to my TV, I cannot wait what in store for me as I venture through my adventure with my party of 6, maybe 8 soon? who knows, new characters come and go and new lands to explore. GOD I DONT WANT IT TO END!!!!

10/10 for me! best part about this is I can always do my side quests on the go too! The portability factor makes this a win win situation.

This review should weigh a lot, as I did not like xenoblade chronicles 1 and xenoblade chronicles X. So I am NOT a fanboy. This review is the real deal. Buy it now!

Cheers! From Canada, -Chou Lum Yee

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An amazing game!. The combat system is very deep and rewarding to masterize. The lurning curve is soft as the game introduces new mechanics at a good rythm. If you are lost, you can buy cheap tutorials so you are never really lost. Some negative points include some slow down in some crowded areas ans some textures that takes time to load. And the best is the music Expand

When the land is far away it looks almost like a pastel painting; as you get closer, it comes to life almost seamlessly; unless you're a try hard PC master race douche; nothing makes those guys happy... they want to LIVE inside the game.)

Story (so far): 6-7/10 (If you hate tutorials, have fun the first 6 hours......)

Fighting System: 9/10 (Once you get the hang of it, it's all fun)

Music: 10/10 (Great, great, great job and possibly greatest part of this game)

Character Dev: 7/10 (Too anime-is for me, but that's why it's a JRPG)

English Voice Over: 4/10 (Please kill me......... preferably in a British/New Zealander/Australian accent)

Japanese Voice Over 7/10 (As expected, and that's why they made it available for free day one)

Time for your money: 10/10 (so much to do......... too much)

Now, the real question I have is this... Why the f*ck are Pyra's breasts so damn large if Rex doesn't even have a penis? (Sorry, the Rex penis part really struck me because well, usually in other games/animes, there is mystery allowed in the nether regions by using baggy clothes and whatnot... but this is clearly "NO ROOM FOR PENIS" crotch. So I wanted to know, if they made Rex practically androgynous, why did they make Pyra so clearly buxom? Pressure from Nier's 2B?)

On a more serious note, I do believe the folk at Monolith went a little overboard here on the fan service, and I was quite disappointed with this particular factor. Naturally, I got over it, but for a couple of minutes after her intro (I'm not one of those who watched the trailer), I drew a huge question mark on design choices. I mean, if you play, you'll understand. They're not just big, they're extremely big. They're bigger than Mai Shiranui's (for the oldest crowd); a little less than Taki's from Soul Calibur (for the old-sh crowd); and approximately the same size as Selvaria Bles' from Valkyria Chronicles... in fact, I'd say her whole body IS based on Selvaria, but with someone else's head.

That's all I wanted to say, and I mostly say it for both sides of that fence. If you like fan service, you'll get some here. If you hate it, or if you think JRPGs should get a little creative and quit the "for little boys" antics, you have been warned.

Xenoblade has a great world and really enjoyable story.. Wont ruin anything.. but take giant Titans, Waterworld concept, and a amazing game like Skies of Arcadia and you have Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

World exploration is great and there are chests hiding all over to find.

    Positives:
+ Graphics.. even though people talk about lower resolution.. world and design is great IMO.
+ Music.. I hear they are doing a Vinyl and its needed.
    + Main Character design
    + Fighting mechanics
+ Exploration ( lots of hidden goodies)
+ Crate system which is used to acquire party member.. in game currency .. not real money.

Not many negatives but here goes a few.
    - World doesn't open up for a few hours.. Might make some think game is not as great as it becomes with patience.
    - Some NPC character models are very generic and not unique like all main characters.
    - Some people may not enjoy the English voice overs.. the game contains a lot of voice acting and the good part is you can change to Japanese voice and use English subtitles. I just kept it English and enjoyed it completely.
    - Some issues with being able to locate certain quest objectives as the map system needs work. ( Dec 22nd 2017 will come the patch that supposedly fixes this and makes some nice improvements)

GRAB THIS TITLE if you like RPG's and JRPG's .. Its great

HOWEVER, this game is on the quality side, and was very very surprised by it.
First of all the anime style fits the character very well, it's very japanese, in the trope, jokes, but this is what i call a good use of classic of the genre, it's really like playing those old PS1 RPG like FF9, where it's classic but yet emotional and effective.

The gameplay just keep getting better and better, the game does a tredemous job on giving you tutorial that progressively ease you into the game because there is A LOT things to digest, but it's done very slowly so you have time to integrate something then move on to the next level.

The overall design of the map, the gigantic world, oh **** me i wasn't READY for this, i knew this was the team thathelped breath of the wild map, but holy **** i didn't expect this level of immersion.
I will be honest, i played all the classic, i can't recall anything giving this sense of grandiose and scale at the level this game is doing.

The soundtrack? ****ing fantastic, this rival easily the likes of persona 5 and nier, with it's own genre and very much suited to whatever situation.

The cutscene are very cool, and will hype you up for the intense boss battles

there is so much to talk about, but let's just wrap this up and say this game offer a grandiose mix of massive exploration mixed with joyfull grinding(you can upgrade weapon/city/shops/Blades/ANYTHING)

Many RPG are trying to build some world building element, but usually they fall flat somewhere, usually very rigid element(cities, boring dungeon ect), lack of lore, lack of care in some area... in this game? nope. ****ing nailed it.

If you don't like old school JRPG, the classic feels of game like chrono trigger and FF7-9 however Pass this game on it's really not for you.

Magistral!.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an epic story that has me hooked, I love the characters and I also love the English VA, this game is a DEEP JRPG that will satisfy fans of the genre, but be warned this game is DEEP, it took me 20 hours to really understand the combat and wow, the combat system is stunningly complicated but once you have fully grasped Blade/Driver Fusion combos and Chain Combos you are given control of a truly engaging, satisfying and tactical combat system that is very unique, it is worth playing this game and sticking with it just for the combat system alone imo.

Once you do understand the combat it is actually rather easy as all its systems become second nature, I think now the combat system has been fully sussed out it wont be as hard for newcomers as it was for people who played the game day one, it goes to show how good it really is as it took me so long to learn it but now I have, it almost becomes second nature.

This game is just full of systems and complexity which means I wouldn't recommend this for a casual gamer, this game takes a lot of dedication to really be able to see its true potential. Do not listen to anyone that has put less than 20 hours into this game and while that may sound crazy, it really is true. this game is truly one of the most involved games I have ever played but it is truly satisfying.

XC2 is a special game and is not a game I will forget easily.

Took one point off because I would have preferred they kept the slightly less anime artstyle of Xenoblade Chronicles X, the combat is slower than I'd like, and they put absolutely no effort into trying to match the english voices to the character mouth movements.

Xenoblade 2 or "xeno 2" is set on a planet named Alrest which is covered by a cloud sea and humans and wildlife must survive on giant creatures named "Titans". There are a wide variety of these said titans in the game and are a lot more creative than the basic "grass, ice, desert" styled landscapes that you usually find in many games (although there are similar ones). The game focuses on a young boy named Rex who accidentally awakens a powerful blade named Pyra or the Aegis. Their mission is to reach the world tree and find a magical land named "Elysium" so that the humans can have a place to thrive and survive due to the titans starting to die out. The plot in that is simple but the way the game executes it makes it thoroughly enjoyable with countless twists and turns. The main enemy is a terrorist group named torna who also wish to access the world tree and it becomes a race to reach elysium. Torna wants to destroy humanity while Rex and pyra want to save it. There are 10 chapters each of them being about 5-10 hours long and i finished the game in about 80+ hours. The main attraction of this game however is battling and as such has a complex but easy to understand battle system that is really enjoyable once you get the hang of it. The game spreads battle tutorials across the first few chapters so you could get used to each section. The only problem is tutorials can never be re-read meaning you have to remember everything when you are told. You can just google if you forget though. In battle your character is the driver and your partner is the blade. There are lots of blades to uncover and you are able to have 3 with you in your party for each character. The battles system is fun for a while but can get tedious if you are battling enemy after enemy but that's the same with any video game. The titans you can explore (there are 8) are all huge and have lots of exploration value. The game doesnt try to throw you straight through the story and due to the huge amount of content within each titan you can spend hours upon hours filling out side quests and just looking through every nook and cranny if you wish. There are other locations but they aren't quite as exapnsive but still are good fun. Something that you will encounter regularly are field skills and each blade has 3. These field skills will be required to access new areas, open treasure and such. Each field skill such as "focus" or "mineralogy" can be upgraded with the affinity chart. The affinity chart is basically a set of abilities the blades have ranging from battle techiques to field skils, however i did encounter a small problem, The affinity chart has layers and the only way to unlock further layers are to complete quests or more commonly.... increase trust. Increasing trust is an absolute pain, to increase trust you must either put items in your characters pouches that the characters like or battling and this can be a huge grind. You could find yourself increasing trust for hours just to complete one quest, This is one thing that annoyed me. In your party you can have 3 characters each equipped with 1-3 blades. You can control only one of them meaning the rest of them use A,I the part A.I is actually really smart and they usually know what attacks to use and when to heal so you usually wont encoutner unlucky defeats. Each Rare blade you unlock has a side quest related to them, these blade side quests take quite a while to complete which is a very good thing meaning that when you have the main story complete you can go back and complete each blades side quests which takes probably even longer than the whole story if you do every single side quest and every single blade side quest. A lot of side quests however require gathering materials. Materials can be gathered from areas named "collection points" however each titan and each area within titans contain different materials and the game will ever tell you where the materials are located so you will use google A LOT. Xeno 2 is overall bug free. I encountered absolutely 0 glitches and the difficulty is just right for the game. It uses a level system like most games where your team will be a certain level and so will be the enemies, levelling up increases health and damage. My problem is levelling up takes ages as you cant beat enemies that are a few levels higher than you and side quests give only a few hundred exp and you will be needing thousands and thousands in the later levels. All in all though the plot of xenoblade 2 is simple but is extremely fun and thorough with many plot twists and engaging events. The battle system is unique and there are many endless combos and tactics. The post game presuming you havent completed everything prior is lengthy, levelling up blades on the affinity chart can be tedius and tiring and the side quests are an absolute pleasure. A true work of art. Expand

I didn't planned to write a review until I have read quite a lot of overrated and underrated reviews. I can see a lot of 10s and 0s which in my opinion is a bit extreme. I am about 60 hours into XC2 so far and I am loving it myself but it surely have some rooms for improvements.

Let's talk about the cons first, people love cons.
    1. The map/fast travelling/navigation has taken a step down compare to the last game. I don't understand why they have decided to change it this way and it's kind of irritating.
    2. Some people says the it's noisy during combat and the characters shouted a few lines over and over. I sincerely agree that it is a bit noisy and it gets annoying during farming , ie a lot of trivial fights. But they are some audio clues of what your teammates are doing. This is useful for setting up chains for high damage.
    3. The story is straight forward. Not many surprises, typical anime plot. You know, the main character is always hot-headed, shout loudly, reckless but things turned out alright for them. I am not a huge fan for this story type but I enjoyed naruto , one piece , etc. So (shrug) , I am completely fine with the story. They have some cheeky/service scenes that are a bit sexual but that is also expected from Japanese lololol.
    4. The tutorials are like a one time thing. I cannot find the instructions afterwards. The item descriptions/intel are like a two line text. A little bit of translations are wonky or simply wrong and actually mislead me going all around the world. (or I am too stupid to understand)
    5. The graphics are not the best. Have a bit FPS issues and blur especially in hand held mode. But i am not expecting great graphics like PS4 so I will live with that.

    For the pros part:
    1. Great BGM
    2. Enormous map for exploration, nice scenery at some places
    3. simple at start and slowly going into complex combat system. THIS is where things get interesting and makes XC2 differs from other JRPG. If it is another ARPG or another turn-based combat system, I wouldn't be loving it.
I don't know why people brag about the combat. If you get one shot, you can come back later. I get randomly one shot by some fxxking lv 8x monkey wandering around when I was lv 10. So what ? There is no real penalty for dying anyway. I can wait until it is gone before walking through the area again.
Some people are complaining it takes too long to fight a monster, even if it is the same level as all 3 team members. Or the combat is boring, you just stand there, don't even have to look at the screen etc etc. In my opinion, that is simply because those people don't want to use their brain during combat or didn't upgrade their blades or use brain in general. There are tutorials about how different chain works to maximize damage output. If you missed/forgot the tutorials, just search on the internet please.
There are so many things you can plan ahead before combat. The typical rpg stuff like team compositions, equipment for blade and driver, elements of blades (planning which driver is going for the 1st tier ultimate, 2nd tier, etc) , arts of driver (making sure I can execute the driver chain).
During combat, you will be constantly calculating the CD of your own arts and your partners. Since you cannot control your teammates, the noisy shouting from teammates is a way of communication. They try to tell you that they are using arts. Observe their animation and determine which arts have been used and on CD for the next ? numbers of normal atk. i think this is the key to complete the driver chain. Not to mention the elemental chains for blades. People need to chain the ultimates for higher damage. If the chained ultimates happened during driver chain, that is even more damage. Of course you can just throw ultimates out randomly and you will probably end up with no elemental orbs for chain burst.
I won't go too deeply into combat and just briefly introduce things I normally have to consider before and during combat.

Overall, I think this is a game that require a lot of planning ahead and calculating. It also requires a bit of fast reaction but not as much as ARPGs. This is not for those people who are looking for hack and slash or some no brainer relaxing story telling game. If people are complaining about the combat system being too simple, low damage output etc etc, I sincerely suggest them go play easy difficulty in Dynasty Worriers. You can run around and press a single normal atk button and win the whole thing. After all, I cannot stop people playing XC2 like a monkey, but at least I hope people can give an honest review and let others truly understand what they should be expecting from the game. Rather than some pure emotional nonsense.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2, albeit not canonically a direct sequel to its predecessor, is a magnificent JRPG that truly captures the spirit of its genre and the unparalleled charm defining the Xenoblade franchise as a whole. The breathtaking open-world of Alrest achieves more than immersing the player in gracing every path, patch of grass, desert surface, snow-covered expanse and artificial terrain with persistent feet taking them through over 70 hours of play time.

The game's rich battle system is superbly sophisticated, with the rudimentary premise of shifting your focus on an opponent and attacking built upon well with the pacing of the game as new chapters lead to new layers of compelling gameplay. Characters, regardless of whom you select in your party-of-three, are equipped with a maximum of three blades that are categorised in elements: Fire, Water, Ice, Wind, Earth, Thunder, Light and Dark, each of which are effective in opposition to the contrasting element. Four arts can accompany the chosen blade, offering a plethora of abilities from healing to attacking to shielding. This, might I elucidate on, is only a minuscule portion of the convoluted components of this battle system that urges you to devise a strategy, whether premeditated or improvised, for each and every encounter. Said battles are not just matters of diving head-first into a monster's area of vision hoping to accumulate experience in a grinding session, but also a testament to your preparations. Refusing to ready your party with core chips (accessories attributing to an increase in stats for a given blade), the correct equipment and the needed blades will often land you in a difficult situation to escape from; hence a decent strategy should facilitate you in preventing such conditions.

In accordance with any and every existing JRPG, their stories will inevitably weave its way into the player's heart, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is no exception to that notion. Rex, a salvager enjoying the pleasure of perceiving life from a simpler perspective is enlisted with a lucrative assignment which both brings about his short-term demise and a touching scene pivotal to the character development of him and Pyra, his newly-awakened blade, as well as the ever-extending plot itself. As new characters ripe with colourful personalities throw their hat into the perplexing story, so does the abundance of side content as the exploration of different Titans conjure up further side quests expanding the world of Alrest further than we know it. It can be said that the beginning four chapters have a sufficient longevity to aggregate a game in itself, with the subsequent six and final chapters developing the plot with more emotional weight and context. The game progresses at your own pace, as you decide whether to power through it casually or designate a handful of additional hours relishing the vast amount of content that the game proudly offers, hence no linear storyline restricts your freedom.

No JRPG is deserving of its title as such without an exhilarating soundtrack to boot; the Xenoblade franchise adheres to this precedent with more commitment than Brighid's desires to record her shenanigans within her journal. Their divine combination of acoustic and string instruments enhances a thrilling battle beyond the complexity of combat that it offers - this title in particular is no doubt a love letter to the masterpieces that is the original Xenoblade's soundtrack with elements from their music tossed into a heavenly mixture of fresh mechanical rhythms (see what I did there?). Each piece of music exemplifies the situation you are placed in; the awe-inspiring visuals of Gormott is reflected by its adventurous, upbeat cadence whilst an excruciatingly-difficult confrontation with the members of the malevolent organisation Torna is supplemented by music portraying the more serious, meaningful atmosphere.

Even amidst the successes that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is accompanied by, there are a number of blemishes that render this game imperfect. Rex's depiction, while great in the demeanour department, is largely overseen by the almost laughable voice acting - especially when raw emotion is filtered through his words. This is evident in Chapter 1 and beyond, though players will eventually grow attached to his Ash Ketchum-esque character. In the English dub, the attempts to sync the dialogue with the animation, of which was only intended to match the Japanese voice acting, is barely adequate enough to accept, but the verbal portrayals of majority of the primary cast is nothing short of excellent. It does further require refinements with the combat system, alongside the art direction and animation which is often distressing and inconsistent as different artists contradict the unrivalled art style of Masatsugu Saito.

This marvellous Switch title is a genuine must-have for any owners of the hybrid console, hands down.

The game has a Pokemon Esque mechanic where you bond with these sentient weapons called Blades that you collect and then use in combat. At the start, it is so exhilarating to find out what new Blade you're going to get. Unfortunately, though, you begin to get a lot of repeats in the common rarity ones and this once cool and fresh mechanic becomes extremely repetitive. Also, there were some inappropriate things that one character did that I was not expecting. These moments were few and far between but when they happened, they were very jarring. I have no problem with games with mature themes, but this was different and came without a warning. These, however, are just personal preferences, and they don't necessarily mean the game is bad because I know there are plenty of people out there who are not bothered by this. In the end, this game is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece that had its hooks in me within the first 30 minutes. Monolith really gave it their all when making this game and it shows, and I'm extremely looking forward to what they are releasing next. Expand

Now early on the game, it felt a bit like a slow burn, not much going on and the fights u could just left on auto and not have much challenge and only gave the occasional input. But once u get past chapter 4 or 5 is when the combat really turns up a notch, and certain bosses of each chapter from then on, will have a difficulty spike. The game starts getting harder and require u to put more and more input, and once u reach chapter 7 is when u always need to have a watchful eye on the combat with regular input, almost active, to make sure u don't fail. (and this is from me keeping my characters at their highest levels from frequent short sleeping level ups in inns.) From most of the reviews I read here from people who only got put off by the combat were mostly in the 1st 3 chapters or so, and I must say their view is valid since the 1st 1/3rd of the games combat is pretty...meh at best, almost sloggish. But honestly the combat in that part of a game felt more like a big tutorial for when u get to chapter 5 and forward, it gets better. But I can understand not many people will like the combat still, even after getting past chapter 4. To me I just wanted the combat to make me give more input and pay attention to win to entertain me, and it does that at the halfway point in the game....imo anyways. (yes its mostly repetitive but, again, it didn't bother me and I enjoyed it.)

Now the English dub is almost 50/50 with people, with some saying its great and others saying its horrible, but honestly from my opinion the dub is pretty good most of the time with a few hiccups here and there. Early on like the 1st 3 chapters, the acting felt more decent at best, like it almost felt like a 1st take or early on in recordings. But honestly after ch.3 it improved more and more, Rex's VA starts putting a lil more emotion, even though imo he still needs to add a bit more, so I grew to like his VA-ing. He does however seem to have issues with screaming, yelling (falling/attacking) and sometimes crying in his VA-ing. His VA-ing is however good most of the time outside of these scenarios. (his eng VA was at its best in the final chapter where he yells and cries pretty well) Now Nia's I liked more with her Welsh accent tbh, I liked it more than the more typical loli cat girl VA-ing I hear in Japanese dubs from anime and such. (and tbh she doesn't look loli to me, more like small bodied) Now Morag's and Zeke's VA-ing is really great, I liked Morag's more sophisticated tone and was pretty believable, where with Zeke's his sound pretty on point with his characters personality with his ego and cringey self. Love them alot with Morag might be my most fav. character in the game. Now Pyra's VA is good imo, some ppl say its bad but honestly I cant hear it. She puts just enough emotion in her character that makes it pretty believable of who she is, that timid-ness while also having a backbone.

Now the music is what I really love about this game, most of it just fits very well with the world and each location having its own theme that reflects what the place is about. From the lively, bombastic feel of the Argentum trade guild that gives off a bustling trade center, to the more catchy and also lively melodic of an open field of nature, of the Gormott province. and later in the game u will start hearing some xenosaga-like music that i'm sure some older fans would appreciate, well that's what the music sounded to me.

Now the story I really enjoyed and early on it did feel kind of anime trope heavy (almost fanservice-y), but after chapter 5 is where it started getting more serious and the tropes started becoming less and less. Now I find myself putting the story quality of this to rivaling Xenoblade 1's story, its pretty good. and don't worry theirs a few plot twists for y'all. ;)

Anyways this game is a near masterpiece that I really enjoyed and felt very nostalgic with the 1st xenoblade. It will have some great music and locations to explore that will immerse u in this world of Alrest. It has some hiccups in acting (Eng dubs) and the graphics are great imo, even though not many people will like the resolution of the game in handheld (600p and rarely drops down to 364p) and with data streaming issues when fast traveling to other provinces where you're still seeing some assets and textures loading in. (they should just cover those up with longer load times imo). Hopefully u will enjoy this game as much as I did and not many would like some of the classic takes of JRPGs of old, but imo this game is up there for some of my top 5 favorites for 2017. I recommend this game very highly to any old and new school JRPG fans. (Even MMORPG fans since the game does incorporate a good few into itself.)

As my first game in the Xenoblade series, I was a little skeptical at first. However after buying and playing the game to completion in about 60 hours, I have to say I'm in love with it.

    Story:
The story is amazing, if not a bit cringy at times. It follows a young salvager named Rex who through certain circumstances becomes the master of an Aegis named Pyra and now must fight to fulfill Pyra's wish of going to Elysium.

The first half of the story is a little slow, but by no means boring. It's the latter half of the story that really gets interesting. I could barely put the console down in the second half of the story because of how mind blowing it was. That's not an exaggeration, whilst playing put aside any theories you have about the ending, because you're likely to be surprised anyway.

Overall i enjoyed the story, it seemed to follow the idea of "you can't do everything alone" a point that is reiterated to Rex by numerous other characters. This phrase is rather important in understanding why the ending happened like it did. However, I will say that you must remember that Rex is a child (15) and as such he is a bit naive and childish, but this doesn't really distract from the story since his strong will more than makes up for it.

    Combat:
The combat in this game is incredible, but can be a bit complex. I've seen some reviewers stating the combat is "slow", but this is only for the start of the game. You can eventually upgrade your character so you can chain driver arts together without a pause in between and even upgrade to the point where you can use all your driver arts at the beginning rather than building them up first.

Remembering all the specialist terms is difficult, but gets more natural the longer you play. By the end of the game I was doing chain attacks with 4 orbs (I've heard some people got up to 6 orbs) and doing ridiculous damage due to the multipliers. The ability to seal an enemies abilities by doing a specific combo is a bold, but genius move. With the right strategy you can seal an enemies strongest ability and then decimate them with a chain attack.

    Graphics:
Now this is one of the reasons it doesn't get a 10 from me. The graphics in handheld mode aren't great, in return the graphics in docked mode are pretty good. My suggestion is to play docked for the story and undocked for farming. I don't really mind the graphics that much since the gameplay, music and story more than make up for it.

    Music:
I don't need to say much, Takahashi stated that all the music they recorded for this game was about 1TB in size, showing just how much they wanted to get it right. The music is absolutely unforgettable, especially the ending music and the ending title screen music which is so good I actually have it on my phone for when I want to relax.

    Post Game:
At the moment I'm level 69 (almost 70) I plan to get every blade, then get them all to S+ affinity and then start NG+ to get the other blades. I don't think I've ever put this much time into a JRPG before, not even FF or DQ.

In the beginning of the game you have very high level unique enemies wandering around the starter zones, I guarantee they'll kill you a few times. However, at end game you can go and teach them a lesson! Furthermore, you have superbosses which are very high level/difficulty bosses that are quite similar to FFXIV extreme trials. You better hope you have a good strategy prepared before the fight.

    Note:
After looking at the negative reviews, I find it hard to believe any of them are actually serious. Quite a lot of the reviews just outright attack anyone who likes this game which is completely inappropriate and makes me think that perhaps they're just there to troll people.

    Conclusion:
This is a prime example of the way JRPG's should be done.

For newcomers - Auto-attack is always on and so this game is about setting up your Arts Combo with your various blades. So this is not button smashing type of game. Please enjoy the various the different and unique types of RPG - Action, Strategy, Turn-base and this is more Rhythm base.

Graphics = 9.0 (great on TV but handheld it takes a hit)< I don't mind it since its on the go
    Gameplay = 9.5
    Sound = 10
    Story = 10
    Overall 9.5

I am giving it a 10 but its really like 9.5 and rounded it but also the nasty little trolls giving it a low score and don't even own the game. The game is absolutely awesome. I have played Xendolade Chronicles 1, X, and now 2. So far, I would say I like this game the best of the entire 3. But I like some parts better in 1 and X better - like X had SKELLS (mechs) and huge pretty world. But 2 has a much better story and deeper character development.

Again the music is the best in the Nintendo Switch Library. I bought the special edition and downloaded/ripped the CD into the my phone to listen too everywhere. So the soundtrack is amazing. There is a Chrono Trigger song in the game but hope you all can find it!

Overall, if you looking for the best RPG game on the Switch this game is it! Because it has an amazing cast of characters, music, and story then you should definitely pick it up! The review that did this game justice is on Youtbue - GameXplain in his 25min review which I watched and said- "LOVED IT"! And that is exactly how I feel - I LOVE IT!

NOTE: Do NOT read IGN, GameInformer, or Gamespot review. They are all paid by EA, 2k, Activision and Ubisoft companies to promote and sell more of their paid to win (loot boxes), micro-transaction type of games.

The story is brilliant, characters are fun and lovable and villains eventually become sympathetic. It knows the right balance between humor and drama, and paced really well. There was no moment when I felt bored, or lost. All questions are answered, all story lines are resolved, we get some neat additions to the lore of the whole series. Without getting into spoilers I'll just say this - the whole sequence after the final boss made me cry like a baby.

The gameplay is magnificent. The battle system became easier, in comparison with the original, but in return it brought more variety to the fights by inclusion of combos and switchable blades. In addition to usual sidequests there blade quest, which are given to you either by your unique blades, or by unique blades in the world. Unlike the regular ones, these sidequests contain their own fully voiced cutscenes and subplots, which help to develop blades' characters. And I never had a need to grind. I was strong enough to overcome every challenge game threw at me by just playing at my own pace. It wasn't easy, but it also wasn't impossible and I never stopped just to grind couple levels, like in the end of the original XC.

The world is gorgeous. It's not as original and fascinating as Bionis, but still manages to impress. And like in the original exploration is rewarded. Locations are still highly atmospheric, and while the game uses a lot of old enemies, it present lots of new ones, who are not inferior in design. Also, like in the original you will encounter mini-bosses much stronger than you. Yes, Territorial Rotbart is in the game.

The music is awesome. I won't speak about it. Just go and listen. In my opinion soundtrack surpasses original game's.

But there are some technical problems. One time the game didn't end the battle, when all the enemies were dead, and I had to reboot it. Also while playing in docked mode textures are loading slowly when you fast-travel from titan to titan, and for couple seconds you may stand in the center of non-existent world. These are minor details, which won't ruin the fun you'll have with the game, but still I have to mention them. Also, no new game+. I know, that it would have been hard to realize, considering the opening chapter and blade-system, but still I miss this option.

So, this game is amazing. After the credits rolled I wanted to play it all again immediately, but sadly, there is no new game+, at least for the time being.

Completion: Finished game and a huge number of side quests after approximately 105 hours.

    Pros:
    - Undoubtedly unique . JRPGs, especially turn based ones, are typically thought of as a fairly stagnant genre, but Xenoblade turns the norm on its head through its extremely unique battle and progression systems. Although there are issues, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 deserves to be lauded due to its willingness to push boundaries and try something new.
    - Soundtrack is catch and memorable. There are a number of tracks throughout the game that will undoubtedly stay with me. Some standouts include the Argentum and Mor Ardain themes.
    - Battle system is very different from anything else that is out there right now and requires positioning, strategy, tactics, and proper timing to utilize effectively. This is especially true during the earlier parts of the game where you're still getting used to all the different components of the initially overwhelming system. There are a lot of moving parts and mastering them is satisfying.
    - World is sprawling and fleshed out. Alrest feels like it could be a real place due to the plethora of lore and intrigue surrounding it. The large, sprawling areas also contribute to this through the sense of place that results from exploring and wandering around the myriad fantastical lands.
    - I overall enjoyed the story. The characters are one of the strongest points and Rex was much more likable that I had initially expected. This may be due to me playing with the Japanese voices and not having to deal with some of the strange accents the localization team had decided to implement. The pacing can be too slow at times and comedy is not used well (to put it lightly), but overall the drama of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 did in fact compel me to continue my journey.

    Cons:
    - So many aspects of the game waste an enormous amount of time. The Merc Missions were a great idea to better utilize your full roster. However, constantly going into the menu and having to scroll through pages of menus to get a proper team for these missions is annoying and can take you far out of the immersion of the rest of the world.

Another example of this is in the Blades, which serve as a hybrid being weapons and party members in Xenoblade 2. Making these Blades stronger often requires you to do very specific tasks that make you go far out of your way to do boring tasks such as killing a random mob X times. Although there are ways to get around some of these requirements, they are definitely necessary for progression when it comes to certain Blades and in the earlier sections of the game where you don't have as many Blades to play around with. Furthermore, the drop rates for the Rare Blades are FAR TOO LOW. I understand how the Generic Blades play into the Merc Mission system, but that doesn't make it any more fun to (very slowly) activate dozens of virtually useless Blades.

However, the most egregious example of this lies in the battles themselves. While strategic and fun, every single battle lasts far longer than they have any right to, especially if you aren't massively overleveled. Defeating an enemy 20 levels under you should happen in the blink of an eye, especially for a game like Xenoblade with no random encounters or any sort of discrete transition into battles, but this is definitely not the case here. It quickly became obvious to me that skipping every single mob I could was the only way to beat the game at any reasonable pace. The enemies have massively inflated health through the entire game and that is simply not fun to deal with in a game that is already so long.

    - You don't have to change your strategy much for fighting different enemies. Although there are elemental weaknesses and species-specific items/abilities, they are often too niche to really be effective and used in any sort of active way for 90% of your battles. Although their appearances and stats change, every single enemy in the game just felt too similar to one another in terms of what my approach should be.
    - Map system is awful and oftentimes the only way to progress is to walk through the area that your objective is in countless times before noticing a hidden pathway or area that will let you progress. The map has no detail in the Z-axis and the objective compass can be as deceiving as it is helpful.
    - Frequent FPS/resolution drops. This is egregiously poor in handheld mode.

    Final Word:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the definition of a flawed masterpiece. The developers reached for the sky and created something truly unique. From playing the game, I am certain that Xenoblade is a game with genuine heart and passion. However, this does not excuse the painfully plodding nature of nearly every aspect of the game, ranging from story to combat. I still enjoyed it - but will forever be disappointed at how incredible the game could've been with just a few more tweaks.

    True Score:

I'm giving this a 10, because to me, it is exactly what I look for in a game.

So you can compare tastes, some of my favorite games/series are:
    Fire Emblem
    Persona
    Borderlands
    Elder Scrolls

Additionally, this is my first Xenoblade game, so take that into consideration.

    Story:

The story was phenomenal. An exceptional story. Rather than sit and explain the way the world works, the game drops you in as a Salvager named Rex, and tells you that, in this world, people live on the backs of giant creatures called titans, but the titans are starting to die out. That is about it. Over the next 100 or so hours, the way the world works is revealed. And even the smallest questions get answered. Almost nothing is without an explanation, but nothing that isn't too important to a character gets over explained.
I really don't want to say anything about the story. It's great and is filled with plenty of twists, turns and fantastic characters. I'm very thankful I was able to play it blind and without spoilers, and I hope you get to as well. Just know that if you have questions about the way the world works, an answer is coming.

    Characters:

Again, fantastic. From the main cast to the villains, everyone is interesting, funny and they all have good backstories. You'll grow to like everyone in the game, or at least, have sympathy towards, even the most diabolical of the villains.

    Gameplay:

Alright, something I can dive into without spoiling anything. I really really came to love the gameplay. It does start out slow. However, slowly over time it gets more complex, and once you have all the tools at your disposal, it gets fun.

So you have skills, called arts. Like most mmos, your character will do their basic attack chain automatically, and you decide when to use the skills. You also have a special meter, and using skills will charge the special meter. Positioning and timing are important. For positioning, skills like the main character, Rex's "double spinning edge" will do extra damage from the side. Some of the tanks do extra damage from the front, etc. For timing, using a skill right after you finish an auto attack gives a boost to your special meter.

On top of that, you can chain specials to deal massive damage. All specials are ranked. So you fill up the special bar once, you can do a rank 1 special, fill it up twice for 2, etc. If you use a special, a tree appears, and you follow the tree, while using ascending specials. For example, you start with Rex's fire special, then you can follow up with a level 2 fire or water special, then you follow up with the appropriate level 3 special. Finish off the chain and you get an elemental orb.

The elemental orbs you get from finishing the special trees can be used to deal even more massive damage in a chain attack. In a chain attack, your party take turns using their specials. As they go along, you deal damage to the elemental orbs. Shatter one, and you get another round of higher level specials. Pull it off well, and you can deal millions of damage, pretty much ending boss fights, but it is easier said than done.

Outside of this, you can break, topple and launch enemies to extend your special duration adn do extra damage while leaving them defenseless.

There's a lot more to it, but it is a lot of fun.

In the end, I know a game was something special when I'm left feeling lost after finishing it. It's the same way I felt after persona 5. This game had consumed me. It's a brilliant time, and the only major complaint I have with it is that I'll never be able to experience it for the first time again.

Okay, really though there are a few complaints:

    1. The gatcha system for getting blades is not for everyone. I didn't mind it, and I got lucky, but I've heard horror stories of people desperately trying to get the rarest one, and really struggling. By no means will you need them all, but for completionists, it'll be a grind, and one you have no control over.

    2. You have to play a retro game to upgrade on of the characters. I like this game, and am good at it. Many will not. There should have been another method of upgrading. This character is a tank, and they do give you another one, but still.

    3. Side quests are just alright. Some are interesting, more are just okay. Side quests are entirely optional though, you don't need to grind them out to be able to finish the story. In fact, they actually take all the exp from these, and save them as bonus exp, in case you don't want to get over leveled.

Other than that, a masterpiece. Easily a 10/10 for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying this review will have spoilers. I feel like I must provide parts of the story in this to express my feelings for this game.

I have never written a review for a game before. I never really had a connection to a game where I felt I would want to express my feeling of it to other people. This game has really changed this for me. I'll start by going into smaller details like graphics, gameplay, etc.

    Pros:

Graphics- This game's graphics are beautiful. For a huge game like this on a small console the game looks stunning. The vast amounts of terrain that you traverse gorgeous. Places like the Leftherian Archipelago look beautiful to stand upon and look down at the cloud sea, then travelling the Land of Morytha which is a polar opposite still is amazing. 10/10

Gameplay- The gameplay is very good. There is still a little to be desired in the early stages, having to rely on auto-attacks to charge up your arts can leave you a little bored, but when you progress, you will always be doing something in battle, instead of watching a battle take place. The specials are satisfying to pull off and the synergy with the elements and your party is fantastic to watch. 9/10

Blades: The vast amount of different combat styles that you unlock with your blades is incredible. Switching in battle from a sword to a polearm and even to dual wield scythes is really cool to expeience. Some weapons can be a bit boring to use, for instance hammers which have an incredibly low attack speed but hit very hard can really bore you, especially in a game where auto-attacks are necessary if you're not using Mythra. 9/10

Story: The story for me is the greatest story in any video game. Watching Rex evolve from a salvager that seemingly became the driver of the Aegis only by luck to the true Driver of the Aegis is very emotional. The game ends the first chapter on a high note and ends the final chapter on a sad note that really had me on the verge of tears. Knowing that Blades lose their memories when returning to their cores, watching Pyra and Mythra return to the core and being reawakened, not knowing anything about their past with Addam, Rex and the group is really, really heartbreaking. Her speech at the end is incredible, and knowing how much Rex really loved her and how she'll never really understand the true length of their adventure that got him to that point was really sad for me. 11/10

Soundtrack: The soundtrack for this game is as beautiful as the story. The ending soundtrack really did it for me, One Last You. Such a beautiful piece to end a story. This isn't the only forgettable song, but the one that really impacted me the most. 10/10

    Cons:

Cliches: As you can expect, this is a JRPG, so you're going to expect a lot of cliches. This game is full of them. There are many points in the game where you feel someone should die but you'll unlock a new form or do something that is supposed to be completely surprising but instead you knew that you would be saved. There are a few contrasts to this, when Pyra gives herself to the enemy and when the third sword disappears into thin air just to name a few. The cliiches aren't bad and do help the story, but if you don't like cliches then you won't become drawn into this game as much. 6/10

Voice Acting- I feel as if there was a huge disappointment with the voice acting. A lot of emotional moments were made to feel a little comical with the voice acting. However, Catrin-Mai Huw, the voice of Nia, really needs to be given props. Her voice acting was incredible and her you could really feel she was giving it her all in her lines. Rex's voice actor on the other hands isn't so good. It felt as if the same line was being repeated over and over again each time he needed to shout her name. Also, Arina Ii, the voice of Poppi, did an unbelievable job and by far the best voice actor in this game. Apart from those two exceptions, the voice acting wasn't very impressive, but if you're willing to put it aside for the incredible story, then you're sure to be rewarded. 4/10

Progression - Late game progression requires you to increase the field mastery of your blades. This can be especially frustrating as you may need to grind out at the end just to complete the story, kind of ruining the flow of the storyline. Although it is a nice idea, it can be frustrating if you just want to continue the story. 4/10

Coming from someone who's completed Zelda and played partially through Mario, I can say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is by far the Game of The Year for me. The story, graphics and cast of characters is something I have never seen another game perfectly achieve, unlike this one. I love this game, and I strongly urge you give this game a chance, even if you're not a fan of JRPGs. This game is GOTY material, and I hope Monolith continue the story in either DLC or a sequel, because this game deserves it.

    Final Verdict - A cliche 11/10

Music: It's good but after 100hrs it feels repetitive somehow...
UI: Very very simple, but streamlined, you have a million of options and it's easy to navigate between them.
Side Quests: they're well designed, even the typical RPG quest of "go pickup 100 apples" have some backstory to make it more interesting, or they add the salvage mechanic to add some randomness to it.
Combat: even if the game failed on all other aspects, this one would carry it to a 10/10. You manage a party of 3, whose roles (Tank/Healer/DPS) are very notorious, the equipment, skills, etc. all revolves around those roles, compared to other semi-rpg's this is a great win. There is a combo/chain mechanic that makes it not just be a button mashing game or just a DPS+heal rinse&repeat, it also requires hitting a timed button to trigger better attacks, enemies have a "weakness" to which you can sort your blades to be more effective.
AI: The tank AI is OK, i can rely on it to keep the aggro, the problem lies with the Healing AI, i've fallen a lot of times and noticed that the healer is DPS'ing instead of healing the party, on some bosses i've had to switch to healing the party as the AI doesn't do an optimal job there and the DPS is meh, doesn't always does combos :(
Bottom line: great great game, i'd give it a 11/10 but take a -1 for the exaggerated female characters that get a close up only when my wife is passing by the tv and she then disapprovingly looks at me.
Stop looking for reviews, go buy it, now now now!

Now i want to get this out of the way. Xenoblade 2 is my first Xeno series game, ever but i have seen Xenoblade 1 for comparison. Even if i may be a bit blinded by love for this game (especially Pyra, who's character design i love, but i'll get to that later) it has its upsides and downsides. I'll start with those downsides.

Cons: The gameplay! Oh goodness the gameplay, the compass

Even if i may be a bit blinded by love for this game (especially Pyra, who's character design i love, but i'll get to that later) it has its upsides and downsides. I'll start with those downsides.

    Cons:

The gameplay! Oh goodness the gameplay, the compass system is atrocious! I spent literally 8 hours finishing 4 early side quests because i had no clue where to go. The aggro system when alone is inconsistent at best and lack of explanation for the more sophisticated areas of the game makes it not very beginner friendly until about 15 hours in. Now the gameplay isn't bad at all, but it could be better with some quality of life improvement. I understand Xenoblade 1 wasn't very good at this either.

What the actual hell is the voice acting? I have cringed many, many times from how abysmal/inconsistent the voice acting is in this game. A lot of times the voice actors seem to forget what emotions are and other times certain lines are delivered like they are from a Triple A actor! What the hell? It detracts from the emotion of those moments, but when the voice acting is good, it's GOOD since the actual actors themselves are good.

Animations/facial expressions. Look i get the anime art style is not designed with this in mind, but at least show SOME expression. I swear one of the bosses has the same dumbass grin the entire time, even after you beat him. That's another thing. Why can the heroes never canonically succeed? Even after thrashing a boss? It's fun to see your hero overcome a challenge sometimes!

The Blade system is fun on paper, but in practice. Oof, getting a good Blade is so hard! Sure you can get 'legendary Blade's from common crystals, but it's very rare and, to me, the Blades were MASSIVE missed potential in the combat. It would've been nice to have them fight using a sub-weapon every now and then, without your commands, acting as actual support rather than a limiting anchor, and with combat as free-flowing as the type Xenoblade is known for, an anchor is the LAST thing you need. At least their special moves are nice

Alright now that's about it for the notable bad sides of this game, let's start on the good!

The storytelling in this game is amazing! With allusion to past events that isn't to vague or too descriptive, revelations on every corner and a story you advance at your own pace (i overlevel everything, lol) along with relatable villains you really feel for the story serves up one hell of a sometimes silly, sometimes serious dish of feels that's guaranteed to stay with you well past the ending. Good thing there's DLC and a prequel because if you love JRPG stories, you'll love this one!

The character designs are amazing! Now this is a contentious point but i personally love the character designs, especially of the villains. Despite the cartoonish art style and lack of proper expression, the designs alone tell us a lot about who we're looking at and who they are, that is a sign you've made your character's appearance well. In terms of personality and actual characters. Mmm, not sure, that's a yes and no, some of them are rather boring.

The open world and care taken into creating this environment where you can fight every enemy you come across (usually with disastrous results) is absolutely wonderful. I've played for hours upon hours just grinding in the open world, taking in its beauty. The artwork for this game is amazing!

Now if you think Metal Gear Solid had good cutscenes, which it does, Xenoblade 2 has a treat for you. I don't normally enjoy lots of cutscenes, but given the occasionally adorable, sometimes silly, but funny characters, disregarding their occasional boredom, the cutscenes, which use the same art style as the rest of the game, are excellently crafted and executed PERFECTLY with these characters, in my opinion. It isn't enough to propel the game to 9/10 but just enough to save it from 7/10. Especially when said cutscene is a fight. Man those are good.

The levelling system isn't a favourite of mine. A bit too complicated for your everyday RPG with this 'extra XP' stuff, but it's easy to master.

Finally. Just listen to the SOUNDTRACK! Even if you don't like these kinds of games, but love a kickass soundtrack, Xenoblade has it for you, and when audio and cutscenes combine, well, cinematic magic happens since the composers did such excellent jobs capturing the feel of every moment in the game. Now i don't like some, like the replacement for 'You Will Know Our Names' from XB1 but it's still REALLY GOOD

Final verdict. If you like JRPG's, don't mind a bit of bad voice acting and like a good story, you'll enjoy Xenoblade 2. It's a deceptively deep, fun and emotional game i'd recommend every Switch owner try for at least 4 hours

Not for a long time has a game called to me in this way. I used to love JRPGs as a kid. I remember playing many of them on the SNES and the mega drive. It’s wonderful. Ok, so the cut scenes are a bit long and the character development is a bit inconsistent. But the game is wonderful- huge, and exciting. I have felt like grinding this much since world of Warcraft in the early 2000’s. It’s an incredible game. If you’ve bought the switch and are looking for a BOTW-like experience, then get this game. But don’t expect it to be the same. You’ll need a touch more patience to stay with the narrative and combat. But if you do, you’ll enjoy a deep and lengthy adventure that is rare to experience in a world of shorter and brief games (no disrespect to the indies intended). Get this if you love adventure. Tried the first game on 3ds but gave up after 20 odd hours of running round lost. Gave X about 4 hours on wi u but couldn’t get into it at all. The story and the characters of this one however had me hooked long enough to learn all the mechanism I really enjoy the battle and upgrade systems.

Took around 60 hours to finish and it’s the first JRPG that isn’t a pokemon game that I’ve finished since FFVII.

It’s not perfect, there’s a lot to learn, to the point where I didn’t get how affinity was even represented until, the last battle. The voice acting is mixed, mainly the main character who’s a bit annoying and Cheesey. The map and level design will frustrate you at time, the platforming mechanics are poor and unfortunately there are areas where you need to walk narrow paths or time jumps.

But aside from all this, it’s an absolutely amazing game, one that after 20 hours in I couldn’t put down.

Now I have played Xenoblade Chronicles 1, X, and now 2 but I have never beat one until Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Absolutely ONE OF THE BEST JRPGs out there, it's beautiful, fun, and rewards you heavily for putting in time with your party. I am 120 hours in and have yet to wanna put it down with all of the post game stuff there is.

Pros: Absolutely astounding and rewarding combat system

Pros: Absolutely astounding and rewarding combat system that picks up quickly and requires coordination and planning
    Beautiful Art Style
    Characters are fun and interesting
It's on the Switch so you can take it with you!

Cons: In typical JRPG style, things don't pick up until about 8 hours in and you don't unlock all of the combat systems till about midway through. With this you will still be seeing tutorials well into the game
    The story is predictable
    It ends.

The scope of this game! I gave it 9 at first, but having completed the playhrough I upped the score to 10. The game is gigantic and awesome. It falls short on how unnecessarily complicated some of the side quests are, but makes it all up with an excellent storyline.

I'm about 100 hours in and thoroughly enjoying the game. It's a classic JPRG with a solid story but a world-class treatment in terms of presentation. I especially like how they got actual Brits (from different regions, some are Welsh, not Brits) to do the English voice acting; that's an excellent touch. Easily the best game I played in 2017, and still with tons to do for me in 2018. It took me around 60 hours to beat the main story, but up to close to 100 hours of playtime so far. Most, if any, very minor complaints I had with the game have been already addressed with patches since release. The only thing I could say is at times the Blade Field Skills can get in the way at a couple spots in the main events, but honestly they were so easy to overcome that the tedious nature really was not much of an issue.

Amazing music, best gameplay out of the Xenoblade games, incredible story (that ties up even some things from the first game, no spoilers beyond that point, it will give something to think about, especially if you played the first game), and does not even require even knowing what happens in the first game (though it makes the game even more impressive when you do) . If you're looking for an amazing 1 player story-driven game for the Switch, this is the game to get!

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
