While the design and the sound is done perfectly the actual game play is boring, quite simple, and repetitive. The offered choices in the game do not have a consequence and the story is not very entertaining.

That being said, the RPG itself is okay. There's nothing new here. If you're a veteran RPG player, then the gameplay is something you've seen before and you'll find this game to be incredibly easy. If you're new to RPGs, this is actually a pretty good place to start. It's pretty straightforward and incredibly forgiving. Unfortunately, that's also a bit of it's downfall.

The game is short. You could beat this in 6-8 hours easy. I looked at all the extra material, so I took 12 hours. This feels like 1/4 of an RPG, but you're also kind of glad that it didn't go any longer, once you've beaten it. A lot of the animations and mechanics aren't slow enough to make you quit the game, but they're slow enough to make the game feel long without actually being long. A setting to speed up dice rolls, attack animations, speech text, and such would be very welcome.

The entire game's premise is that you've got a Game Master that's talking you through the adventure, kind of like a Dungeon Master for D&D. Unfortunately, the GM speaks pretty much evenly the entire time, never bothering to make the characters sound different in any way. All of the characters speak the same, flat monotone, no matter what is happening to them. The game could have upped itself quite a bit just by adding a few more people to the voice acting mix, or by having the game master actually try to add some sort of tone to his speech. It kinda feels like they paid a guy $500 to read every line of the game over the course of 10 hours.

Likewise, the music and sound doesn't do much here. There's basically 3 background tracks. They're all incredibly well done, but they don't help the already monotonous GM add any sort of excitement to the game. The sound effects are all pretty dull and samey as well, but I wasn't expecting much from an RPG in that area.

Finally, the story and characters are all... fine. It's a pretty predictable, tried-and-true plot. You'll know every beat and every twist well before it happens. The characters don't really develop and the emotional moments of the game don't feel earned, but that's also because the game is just too short. Were this a 40 hour game, I could see myself really feeling the weight of some of the things that happen here. As it is, I just kinda went "oh" to most of it. The dialogue does need some serious overhaul though. The dialogue feels like it was written by a space alien that was studying human interaction through movies and TV, but has never actually interacted with a human before. Funny at random times, but mostly just left me going "Well that was awkward."

All that being said, this isn't a bad game. It's just not worth what they 're charging you. The only real criticism I have is that the random encounters happen a little too frequently. Fortunately, they're pretty fast, but when you just kinda go through them automatically without any thought, they just kinda get in the way and aren't very interesting. Reducing these or making them not random would also help this game a lot. Again, the encounters aren't so frequent that you want to just walk away from the game, but they are frequent enough to be annoying by the end.

Overall, this isn't a terrible game. I'd play a sequel. I would NOT recommend buying it at full price, however. They're asking $30, I'd say it's worth $10-15. None of the DLC is worth purchasing, either. A good first experiment, and I'll likely play the next one, but they've gotta improve and redo quite a bit if they want to really make this into something that will keep bringing people back.

basic & classic JRBG game on cards still, nice and relaxing music by Keiichi Okabe, and a multiplayer mini game ab to 4 players locally, I really enjoy the game but I advise to buy it on sale.

Many learned the name Yoko Taro from Nier Automata, and indeed Nier Dualogy is a great franchise. However, it puzzles me what made Taro decide that it's a good idea to make a traditional Japanese turn-based RPG in modern times, cuz it's not, and hiding it under the appearance of a card game changes nothing.

The game was easy basically all the way till the final boss fight, at which point it becomes ridiculously hard and annoying. Apparently toward the end, he wanted us to explore the maze and get those top weapons and armors, but I'm not gonna do it when you run into a battle every 3 to 5 steps in that maze. Just not gonna happen, it's no longer 1980s. Such a bad difficulty curse is just bad game design, and despite the generally faverable or okayish review, the fact this game is so niche says everything.

So, I got stuck at final boss, and I don't plan to do ANYTHING about it, because going back to get good weapons means I will face another 100 battles before I get back to the boss. On the other hand, going back to town to get more potion and other stuff, which you barely ever needed at all until final boss, means I need to come all the way back to the boss again. Not gonna do it. Good chance you won't buy much along your play cuz you never needed them, except now you really need it, a lot, but the cost to go back and get them is really not worth it.

The game is just so mediocre in everyway, even the music is not good as Nier dualogy, despite same man made them, and the story isn't that good at all. Nothing motivates you to go through the pain in the ass to reveal the end. I still think Nier as one of my favorites of all time, but the name Yoko Taro is no longer the golden seal of quality. So disappointed

Like every Yoko Taro game it has very interesting and weird characters, hilarious writing, and some VERY dark twists and tones that may shock you from time to time.

Not for everyone but very unique and creative and entertaining if you like it. I also recommend playing the Demo first because it is some sort of prologue to the actual game. 9/10

Voice of Cards: the Isle Dragon roars doesn’t do anythinn spectacularly, and that’s okay. Everything about the game is polished and fine, yet it never exceeds in any area. The combat is unique enough to make it worth your time and the aesthetic is interesting enough to keep you engaged.

The Game is a bit easy that's all that could be better. Hopping for a Sequel or a DLC. Story was great the Music was even better. There is also a little Cardgame in the Game, would be nice if it's getting an Onlineplay Option to playing with friends. Expand

Gameplay 4/10 - battles are fun and unique. Way too many monster and event encounters - also many pointless things that just take up time. It feels bad to move, as i await a monster encounter which I would just run away from. It's basically impossible to traverse the map while staying sane.

Design 7/10 - Unique - but i feel over done how the whole game is built on cards, from the map to the combat to the monsters to the characters. I feel like the map could have been not cards. While it feels unique and cool at the start, it just seems clunky how your card moving around the map moves from card to card.

Music 8/10? - That one soundtrack is so Nier-esqe I couldn't help but love this game the first hour of gameplay. I can't really recall the other music but yeah the music is the best part of the game.

Overall unsatisfying how the ivory trio, or some other guy shows up after you beat a boss - so u traverse through 100 random monster encounters to kill a boss just to have the excitement taken out when someone else shows up. Really? The framework for this game had potential, but definitely tarnished by the gameplay and plot direction.

Imagine you could play Dungeons and Dragons with Yoko Taro as Gamemaster, this is Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars.

It is a really nice little JRPG made out of cards. Story is a typical Yoko Taro story, gameplay is good and if you buy the Nier music DLC the music is perfect. Can't say anything bad about the game except that is a bit too easy.

    I love it

The game is beautifull, but the difficult is not very good. The game is too easy and the only challenge on the main story of the game is the last boss, which is where you realize that the main character is pretty useless to the party since there are better healers and dps characters. The random battles can be annoying, but i love turn base combat so i will let it slide.

    > Great story with a strong flavour of Yoko Taro’s signature twists, probably my favourite part of the title. After the first hour of gameplay I assumed Voice of Cards had the most generic plot and side stories imaginable but I was wrong. I’m not going to spoil anything, but there’s more than meets the eye and I had a blast following the storyline in this game.

    > Very anime-esque character personalities, aka fun and likeable but rather one-dimensional. I don’t see it as a flaw, however, as they worked well in the context of the game.
    > Gorgeous and unique art style. I spent a ridiculous amount of time just admiring the character designs and card ornaments.
    > Good sound design and beautiful music.
    > Fun and simple gameplay. Don’t expect Voice of Cards to really challenge you or push strategical thinking. This game is a fresh and entertaining experience you can kind of breeze through without much planning or thought. For me, it wasn’t a bad thing whatsoever, but it might bug some.
    > Pretty short. Too short, in my opinion. That’s the only reason I’m not giving the game a 10/10.

Overall, a great game to relax to after a long day of work/studying. Definitely recommend it if you’re not going into it expecting challenge.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a game with a simple structure, but one that brings a solid experience that is very well built. The story starts simple and surprises players by it’s end and the characters become more interesting with time. The combat, mechanically simple, is elevated due to it’s animation and good balancing. This is not a RPG that will surprise for bringing new things to the genre, but by how well it does all things that we usually take for granted.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a strange mix of table top and video games that manages to add something new to the very traditional JRPG genre. It’s a short, cozy experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome while also feeling fully fleshed out.

Due to the difficulty, or mostly lack thereof, and simplified concepts I could recommend Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars as a beginner or more laid-back RPG. More experienced gamers might bemoan the straightforward gameplay or lack of difficulty, but those who are interested in the charm and humour only need bring their cards to the table. At the very least you should give the demo a try.
