Tumbleseed is a good pick up and play game that feels perfect for Switch, but will frustrate as much as it pleasures. While it certainly feels fresh and new, it’s simply going to be too hard for most to enjoy in any long term fashion.

In a generation that has struggled with finding the right balance of pace, it is refreshing to see a developer place a great deal of emphasis on patient gameplay and actually pull it off. Vertical progression and slow movements are valued over everything else, and these are the two elements that allow TumbleSeed to thrive as much as it does. Unfortunately, that same level of importance given to fine tuning the controls and concept is noticeably lacking in the level design, as roguelike randomisation is given priority over traditional, handcrafted stages. Along with too many power-ups and unlockable skills that trivialise most of the difficulty, TumbleSeed fails to live up to all its potential despite the clear amount of creativity put into its premise and a strong first impression.

While its level of challenge is certainly welcome, it's impossible not to think that at some moments, it goes a bit too far and as such, it's recommended only for those who are mentally prepared to take on its unforgiving difficulty.

Each time I finally reached a new level, I was ecstatic. However you manage it, it's as rewarding to survive as it is frustrating to fail. But when those rewards start to feel further and further apart, it can be difficult to keep coming back for another climb.

TumbleSeed is challenging in all the right ways. It never feels mean-spirited, yet it requires patience, perseverance, and experimentation to unlearn everything you know about how to manipulate a video game character. [Recommended]

To get the most out of a game like Tumbleseed, as with the brutal puzzle-platformers that inform it, you must do more than play. You must be willing to wrestle with it and, if not master it, at least develop some degree of proficiency. You must also accept that, despite your best efforts, you might not be able to. If you’re willing to devote some of your leisure energy into Tumbleseed, I imagine you’ll be rewarded. But I can’t guarantee it. I might just be the world’s worst Tumbleseed player.

TumbleSeed is a procedurally- generated, rogue-like, balancing game, in which the basic premise is to transport your seed through various obstacles to the top of a mountain in order to save the people. This game is special. I haven't felt like this playing an indie title in quite some time, and in the world of rogue-likes I put this one up there with Rogue Legacy. The game is brutally difficult, however, so anyone just looking for a casual, pick-up-and-play experience should probably avoid this game (unless you like playing through the intro sequence over and over again). I would also say that anyone who likes faster paced games exclusively should probably pass on this one as the game requires a ton of patience and understanding of the mechanics to be successful. On the flip side, anyone who loves indie games, and keeps up with the best ones out there must play this game. It is one of the good ones that can't be slept on. I would even say this is a great entry point into the indie world if you usually stick to AAA games, especially if you are into games that FromSoftware makes, or the various other Souls clones. I haven't been this frustrated with a game since Dark Souls, and I loved every second of it. Full Review »
