Triangle Strategy may be heavy on story but the story in my opinion is what makes it stick out. It’s gripping and every decision makes you really think before you act. A very solid T-RPG. While the evolution mechanics could have been more encouraging and less of a grind, the story tellling and the choice system are high level. The 2D HD graphics are made for this genre and the musics are what SquareEnix got us used to. One thing to be aware of though : the amount of dialog is somewhat colossal, which is not a problem for me, but it is to be known before you begin playing. There is a NG+ with all the classic features, but I'd like more a "timeline system" which lets you to go to the exact moment of the choice to experiment other ways (like in Radiant Historia for example). Anyway, any T-RPG should play it, given the amount of dialogs doesn't bother you. Expand

I really did enjoy this game and will easily recommend it to fans of the genre as it is a solid strategy RPG. I bought the game thinking I would be addicted to the gameplay and the story would be decent, but it turns out it is the other way around. To start with the positive, the game tackles storytelling in such an engaging and digestible approach. The first 4-5 chapters (the demo) are a complete drag, and they really just lay down the backdrop, introduce the characters, and allow you some opportunity to build a foundation for your convictions, which are the three “decision trees”. The story is a bit complex, but the chapters, summaries, and world map really illustrate the war that is the main vehicle for the story. I really respect how they were able to make a somewhat complex story into something that is so engaging and easy to follow. Typically, I enjoy a good story, but I sometimes lose interest in RPGs that go on well past 20 hours, but it turns out that the story was what I enjoyed the most. The convictions system and decision making system are awesome and really make the story connect with you. As the game progresses, you are asked to make some decisions where it feels like there isn’t a clear correct answer, and each option has related benefits and consequences. I also appreciate that there are some decisions that are completely wrong despite you thinking it could have been the right path, and it has immediate effects in the story and gameplay. It feels like just about every interaction is meaningful, unlike similar games in the genre, like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which feels like it is mostly filler.

As far as the gameplay goes, it’s still excellent, but it doesn’t really shine as much as I anticipated going into this game. I really like that it is challenging and punishing, and it requires you to fully think out your moves as the punishment can be devastating. However, it really doesn’t do anything that most other strategy RPGs have done. It almost feels like a slightly simplified version of the genre as a whole. It also feels a bit robotic at times, because you quickly learn that every chapter has two major story elements and then a battle, which makes it flow poorly. That’s not to say the gameplay is bad, because it’s really good, but it just feels like they fell pretty short on the actual gameplay and progression. The lack of any type of post game content proves just reiterates that they were far less focused on the gameplay than they were on the story.

The presentation is also a bit on the weaker side. I love the HD2D art style, particularly that of similar games like Octopath Traveler. However this game has a visual identity crisis - the graphics are too good and polished for it to feel like a classic 2D pixel game, but they’re not good enough to be modern graphics. It almost makes the visual aesthetic of the game feel a bit lazy. The music is also a bit underwhelming. Although I thought the voice acting was pretty good.

All in all, it’s an excellent strategy RPG with a fantastic story, I do recommend it to everyone. It just feels like there is a lot of wasted opportunity and it could have been much more than what it became.

The decision making feature is also a great one where the decision you make will alter how you view and going through the game. Near the end of the game, I'm being forced to cut ties with one of my allies because of differences in how we view the next step to survive/ winning the battle. It's completely creating a dilemma but with the end of the chapter, I completely convince right away, without consulting with anyone within the roster as I will get rid of Roland. His proposition is completely insane, a desperate and coward kind of move from him.

If you like a narrative driven game, this game is completely one of the best out there. Gameplay wise, I don't really like tactics but I manage to finish the game on Easy. The normal difficulty is just so hard for me.

Note: >60% of your time playing this game will be all about watching cutscene and interacting with characters which is why this game is lacking in terms of gameplay. The exploration also sucks, the world is so small despite the presentation of Norzelia which seems big.

The adventures through the Kingdom of Glenbrook provide a compelling experience, more so for those who love choice-based games that involve intriguing plots and tactical combat. Triangle Strategy is one of the few games where making decisions that matter is harder than actually winning battles. This is one of those games that could leave a mark on an entire gerne if Square Enix decides to turn it into a franchise.
