If you are a fan of FF Tactics, its a must.
I gave it 10/10 because its a fantastic tactic game BUT you also need to like cutscenes and history because its like 65% of the game. So there is like 1h block of history then a fight and repeat.
    Also your choices MATTERS.

This game is criminally underrated. Review score should’ve at least been a 90 minimum. Great visuals. Amazing gameplay. Amazing characters and story paths. Amazing music. As a huge fire emblem fan I must say this is probably the best SRPG game you can get on switch.

As we unlock characters, their stories and interactions can be seen at certain points in the story. Some characters join your party only if you choose a certain path, like General Avlora, for example. She's amazing as a unit and terrifying as an enemy. The combat, how to equip your roster and who to pick to clear a certain map are important choices to be taken into account. The positioning of your units in combat is as important as the use of terrain and weapons/magic/buffs to your advantage. The game has a lot of replayability because of different paths you can take. In subsequent playthroughs you get access to the choices you already made and then pick something else entirely and experience a part of the game you haven't seen before. The ng+ allows you to recruit more characters based on your convictions. If you enjoy the game, I'm sure you'll cross that bridge when you get there. I will visit Norzelia again soon. Expand

5 score is because of the battle system, which is great! but it's more like playing a novel, with too much text, and 0 actions. I honestly will buy this game with an 80% discount.

A turn-based strategy game worthy heir to the FF tactics saga. More focused on the narrative, but with less team customization options. The game looks beautiful, and is very challenging on the highest difficulty. As in tactics ogre, the game is made up of several endings, depending on the choices you make during the story.

a must for all lovers of the genre

I don't know who this game is for. For your time investment, you're rewarded with endless grinding, a boring story, subpar characters, and a game that feels more like bad fan fiction from a teen who just read The Fountainhead.

I can tell the people who made the game were passionate, but the end result is mostly bad. Pros:

-The music - which some people dislike? - is excellentz It reminds me of upgraded 16-bit soundtracks. A few songs are fantastic and 80% of the songs are above-average. My least favorite song is the victory music, which sounds less like you won a battle and more like you won a game of Scrabble. -The enhanced pixel-style art. It's colorful, moody, vibrant. The characters are fairly easy to identify and get attached to in pixel form.

-Some characters are cool. I liked Benedict, Anna, and Milo. I liked some of the bad guys. None are as memorable as a Final Fantasy game, but a few stand out. -I liked about half of the voice acting. Benedict sounds very wise and avuncular. I liked some of the villains' voices, too.

-I think the battles are top tier for a strategy game. There is so much to do. Nobody feels particularly overpowered or downright awful. And the skills are actually useful. For instance, Jens can add ladders to terrain. I like how Roland, who rides a horse and uses a lance, is most effective when flanking, which is a nice attempt to add some realism. I like the controls and UI, which are modern and user-friendly. -I like that adult themes are explored, like forcing you to make tough decisions and actually acknowledging that you are really killing people.

    Cons:

-The story is so long and boring that after 40 hours, I'm putting the game down. I only have a few chapters left but I can't stand another minute of this fake Shakespearean dialogue, which is littered with weird stuff like demesne and gaol, two words I've never seen in 4 decades on Earth, and that make no sense to use in a game that will mostly be played by 13 year olds. Hours and hours and hours of boring political intrigue and bland exposition. Cutscene after cutscene, trope after trope, plot hole after plot hole. It is just so dry and - forgive me - nerdy. The game is so long that I feel bad wasting my time on it. I am only two chapters away from the end but I simply do not care anymore and I have grown to hate the game. 75% of the game could have been cut, and had that effort and energy been spent on adding maps, that would have made for a better game. -The characters are so stale and static. I started to really get annoyed by them. It's hard to care about their struggles because they are the same cookie cutter characters from every game and every anime series from the past 30 years. Oh, the guy who wears heavy armor is loud and kind of dumb!!

-The amount of grinding in the stupid pub is silly. If the game were slightly less difficult or less stingy with items and coin, you could just play the game. Instead, you're forced to slog through identical battles over and over and over. It is not fun but it's required if you want to upgrade your characters enough for the next "real" battle, which you're allowed yo do after 10 "character stories" and another hour of dialogue where you can tell the voice actors have given up trying to deliver with any feeling because they, too, are so sick of doing it.

-Sometimes the story makes no sense. I spent hours trying to prove a guy is smuggling salt. Why couldn't they have just said, "The suspect's assistant attacked us and we had to kill him." This fact is never mentioned. The dead character seems to disappear from everyone's memory. -With dozens of hours or dialogue, you'd think the characters who appear would have unique stories, right? Nope. They show up randomly and join your party, and that's it. Like literally, they show up and ask to speak to you. If you're lucky, the story implies you walked past them and they joined. It's so lazy. How can I care about a character who walks up to a tent and says, "I'm joining your team!" In conclusion, the game is rare because half of it is well constructed and the other half is excruciatingly boring. Here is a breakdown of the game:

    50% is exposition
10% exploration (where you walk around a map looking for evidence or items)
15% grinding in "mock battles" which you *have* to do
    15% actual strategy battles

In comparison, the original Shining Force, which is a masterpiece, is 90% battles, 5% exploration, 5% story, yet I actually remember the story and characters from that game. I see people defend this game from criticism like you just said something about their mom. If you have a job, a wife, and have to clean your house and feed your dog, this game is what I'd consider low-quality and even joyless leisure time. Play Shining Force, play Fire Emblem, play FF Tactics or Tactics Ogre. This game is reserved for the absolute driest and nerdiest among us.

The decision making feature is also a great one where the decision you make will alter how you view and going through the game. Near the end of the game, I'm being forced to cut ties with one of my allies because of differences in how we view the next step to survive/ winning the battle. It's completely creating a dilemma but with the end of the chapter, I completely convince right away, without consulting with anyone within the roster as I will get rid of Roland. His proposition is completely insane, a desperate and coward kind of move from him.

If you like a narrative driven game, this game is completely one of the best out there. Gameplay wise, I don't really like tactics but I manage to finish the game on Easy. The normal difficulty is just so hard for me.

Note: >60% of your time playing this game will be all about watching cutscene and interacting with characters which is why this game is lacking in terms of gameplay. The exploration also sucks, the world is so small despite the presentation of Norzelia which seems big.

Interested concept, nice game, but it gets frustrating with trying to get others to agree to your choice. The battles, at times, feel like they are WAY above the recommended level and some made me think they were devised by a vengeful 5 year old that wasn't given ice-cream.

Fue una verdadera sorpresa este juego, que da la sensación de estar jugando un FF Tactics con una trama y sistema de juego pulido a la perfección. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just made an account to rate this game as I saw quite some bad reviews about to much text, because it's one of the best games I've played in years. Honestly, the first 2-3h if the game we're a bit tedious to get into and for some players the ratio between "story elements" and "exploration/fighting" is too heavy on dialogue. But the game rewards you with an intriguing story, very difficult choices that usually haunt you for the next hours with its ramifications and fun battles. Best gaming experience I've had for at least the last 5 years.

PS: play the first game with choices by heart and then aim for the golden route in game+ playthrough
PPS: utilize the encampment and mock battles as soon as they come available.

Literalmente no puedes elegir trabajos, habilidades, armas, nada.

The game can be great, but it never really punched through that glass ceiling I wanted it to like some of my favorite rpgs. It is very good game, great at times, but rarely is it amazing in my eyes. The story was engaging, but many of the big moments weren’t jaw dropping or were easily seen coming. There is your standard twist or two that were rewarding to experience, but I don’t think ill be thinking of this story months later like I do with some of my favorites.

The story is great and is presented really well I find my self playing through just to see how the story unfolds, and there is some replay value as your game's campaign might have a different path based on your situational decisions. As for gameplay, it reminds me a lot of Tactics Ogre which is another classic SRPG, the skill/spell mechanics is a little different, you earn a TP every turn which you can use to perform skills/spells, The system has a lot of gameplay depth into it, many types of varying classes that you may find helpful in some battles depending on the conditions and battle ground, there is also the Kudos and Quietus Points that gives you situational advantages when battle seems hopeless, there is also the Encampment where you can prepare your troops for battle, purchasing items, kudos, quietuses, or be it upgrading class/skills/weapons or grinding them units levels up with the Mock Battles. The graphics and sounds are also pleasing, the art style is a beautiful mix of modern and retro pixel art, the music feels it belongs perfectly to the atmosphere of the game and most of the game is voice acted (some voices are good some are average) which adds to the overall quality. Overall this is a perfect gift for SRPG fans. Expand

++There's a demo of the game so you can try it out first.
++Excellent gameplay with solid combat mechanics which you get to play on a range of different maps and scenarios.
+The difficulty is well-designed and it never really gets too easy or too hard. That said, I would not recommend playing on "hard" difficulty as I found that it forces you to play very defensively and you'll need to grind quite a bit.
+Good visuals and sound effects. I wish I could see character portraits during dialogue as I think it would express the characters' personality better.
+/- The game is very text and dalogue-heavy, which means your enjoyment will depend on this type of content. I personally found the style of writing to be too flowery and lengthy, which made every character sound like an 19th century count.
-The delivery of the dialogue by the voice actors is pretty underwhelming in English. I ended up switching it off.
+/- The game has about a dozen key choice moments, which lead to branching paths. In practice they are more like detours that inevitably return back to a shared plot point. I'm a bit mixed on this. On the one hand, I enjoy the player agency, but sometimes it also just contrives there to be a dilemma, when you could solve one problem and then the other.
-The characters are a bit bland. One of the things I enjoy about Fire Emblem games is that it has a heterogeneous character cast. Usually there will be at least 1 character whose personality you like and least 1 character you find utterly insufferable. In Triangle Strategy, most characters come across as the moralistic, straight-laced type and the few comedic moments in the game usually do not land well for this reason.

All that said I think this is a good strategy title, although the price tag is a bit high.

One dimensional characters and a mind numbingly railroaded boring cliché story does not a masterpiece make. The moderately enjoyable gameplay and art style are this game's biggest strengths. I really did enjoy this game and will easily recommend it to fans of the genre as it is a solid strategy RPG. I bought the game thinking I would be addicted to the gameplay and the story would be decent, but it turns out it is the other way around. To start with the positive, the game tackles storytelling in such an engaging and digestible approach. The first 4-5 chapters (the demo) are a complete drag, and they really just lay down the backdrop, introduce the characters, and allow you some opportunity to build a foundation for your convictions, which are the three “decision trees”. The story is a bit complex, but the chapters, summaries, and world map really illustrate the war that is the main vehicle for the story. I really respect how they were able to make a somewhat complex story into something that is so engaging and easy to follow. Typically, I enjoy a good story, but I sometimes lose interest in RPGs that go on well past 20 hours, but it turns out that the story was what I enjoyed the most. The convictions system and decision making system are awesome and really make the story connect with you. As the game progresses, you are asked to make some decisions where it feels like there isn’t a clear correct answer, and each option has related benefits and consequences. I also appreciate that there are some decisions that are completely wrong despite you thinking it could have been the right path, and it has immediate effects in the story and gameplay. It feels like just about every interaction is meaningful, unlike similar games in the genre, like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which feels like it is mostly filler.

As far as the gameplay goes, it’s still excellent, but it doesn’t really shine as much as I anticipated going into this game. I really like that it is challenging and punishing, and it requires you to fully think out your moves as the punishment can be devastating. However, it really doesn’t do anything that most other strategy RPGs have done. It almost feels like a slightly simplified version of the genre as a whole. It also feels a bit robotic at times, because you quickly learn that every chapter has two major story elements and then a battle, which makes it flow poorly. That’s not to say the gameplay is bad, because it’s really good, but it just feels like they fell pretty short on the actual gameplay and progression. The lack of any type of post game content proves just reiterates that they were far less focused on the gameplay than they were on the story.

The presentation is also a bit on the weaker side. I love the HD2D art style, particularly that of similar games like Octopath Traveler. However this game has a visual identity crisis - the graphics are too good and polished for it to feel like a classic 2D pixel game, but they’re not good enough to be modern graphics. It almost makes the visual aesthetic of the game feel a bit lazy. The music is also a bit underwhelming. Although I thought the voice acting was pretty good.

All in all, it’s an excellent strategy RPG with a fantastic story, I do recommend it to everyone. It just feels like there is a lot of wasted opportunity and it could have been much more than what it became.

and that for me is a crucial point especially when it comes to a Tactical RPG. the game simply gives you a character ready, the only thing you equip on the characters are two accessories and nothing else, there is no armor, weapon, class change, and most of these accessories only increase attributes.

The game economy is extremely frustrating. All upgrades are extremely expensive, combined with the fact that you have 18 characters. You will only be able to upgrade a few and thus has to be really careful with who you chose to upgrade as there is no room for experimentation here.

The fact that there is no exp share and most encounters only allow 10 characters means you're looking into some serious grinding to level them all up unless you want to focus on a few which I ended up doing. What makes grinding worse is that outside of the story battles, the only way of getting exp is to repeat the same few tavern mock battles over and over. Fun? No...

The voting system is also fundamentally broken. It's based on a random number generator which is affected by invisible stats that you gain from doing various things that are never really explained. If these hidden stats are not high enough it doesn't matter which dialogue options you use when trying to persuade characters. Also some characters are listed as "undecided" when they in fact are 100% aligned to one outcome unless you can persuade them. The whole system just stinks.

Unfortunately the game has too many fundamental design flaws that I simply can't recommend it to anyone but hardcore fans of the genre.

There is a NG+ with all the classic features, but I'd like more a "timeline system" which lets you to go to the exact moment of the choice to experiment other ways (like in Radiant Historia for example). I've played many other RPGs, both western and japanese with much worse stories and endless repetitive battles that somehow get praised for both. This game's story is high up there. The setting could be a lot stronger and there are some plot holes, but the maturity of dialogue is pretty distinct for JRPGs. The quality of the story also picks up as the game progresses where the player is presented with many morally ambiguous situations.

Same goes for the battle system. Certainly could be more complex but every character has a distinct and unique role. Plus, the battles are curated, which means you don't have to grind endlessly. Story and character development also often occurs during the battles which is a nice touch.

Together it creates a unique and adult-enough package which is contrary to a lot of other games that often get high scores now: meaningless lore building in drab worlds and little sense of mystery and imagination or games that are focused on annoying, unrealistic characters of high school motivations.

Best strategy game I have played in a while, highly recommend for SRPG fans.
Narrative was surprisingly good and story choices felt impactful. I do feel a lot of the extra recruitable characters could have tied in better with the main story though.
Tactics gameplay and octopath traveler style visuals work well here.
Needs more recognition so we can get more games like this.

There also isn't much in terms of side content. There is the occasional training battle scenario that you can do from your encampment, but that's it. While there seems to be a decent amount of different main story paths to choose from, there isn't much in the way of side content.

The class and upgrade system are also pretty bare bones when you compare them to older titles like FF tactics. There is very little offered for customizing your characters. There are no optional sub classes or ways to customize your character. There is no talent trees or inventory system. Instead its just a basic upgrade and promotion system that will end up the same for 99% of players.

The story is somewhat interesting, but again, there is a bunch of pacing issues that can make it feel like a slog at times.

Overall an enjoyable strategy game, but its just so odd to me that no tactics game has managed to come close to FF tactics or Tactics ogre after all these years. How are class system, side missions, and inventory options less robust than games that came out over two decades ago?

    Main characters are boring AF
    Voice acting is trash
Pace is very slow (it's practically a visual novel with a few battle scenes). I'm a sucker for story-driven SRPG games like FE and and FFT. I love the cutscenes in FFT and I'm excited to see the story progress. But TS has far too much cutscenes. If you're taking an hour just to go through all the cutscenes and character stories before popping into a 20-min story battle (and this happens every story battle), you're playing a visual novel, not a tactics game.
Story isn't even great, character dialogues are questionable most of the times.
Gameplay isn't as deep as you would like.
    Controls are bad
    - there are countless times where I press B to reset the cursor only for it to default the character to "SKIP TURN". There's already a shortcut (+) for the SKIP TURN, why use B as well?
    - some time when camera angles shift (either due to player or game changing the angles), the directional controls get's swapped (right goes up, and up goes left, etc). it's confusing and annoying AF.

    TLDR: 6/10
it's a visual novel with a few battles in between where character progression is close to none, and the story is 'meh'. But visuals are great anyway. Suits it I guess, since it's a visual novel.

Fantastic music and memorable characters, but the voice acting is somewhat hit or miss. I'd say that the voice acting for most characters is actually very good especially the side characters, but mediocre performances from one or two of the main cast brings it down somewhat. Still, that's a very small detail in an otherwise great game. The only real complaint that I have is that I dislike the way that they handled new game plus. They made it so that characters start again at the level they were at when you finished the last playthrough. Enemies are also scaled up to these levels. The story is set up in a way that if you want to fully experience all of the routes, you have to play through the game multiple times. Naturally, your first instinct is to start a new run on new game plus. But I actually prefer to just start a brand new save file. This allows you to use characters that you didn't use on previous runs without them being so underleveled that you would have to spend a lot of time training them up to where they need to be. The difficulty spike even on just the first level of new game plus is also way too much. But this problem can be avoided just by starting a new game, so I still feel that this game is deserving of a 10. Expand

Firstly there is the insane grind. You have to do way too many mock battles to level up so you stand a chance at fighting the main story missions. A mission will say recommended lv. 21, but there will be multiple enemies lv 23 and 2 levels make a massive difference in Triangle strategy. For a game that seems like there is lots of opportunity for replays, you will not want to as you have to grind way too much.

Then extra enemies that show up in missions. This is normally fine. Except in one mission, it results in a third of your force being wiped out with no chance to save them. When you need to have advanced knowledge to complete a mission you know the game is bad.

In one mission the Boss enemies and many of the regular enemies just sit there and don't take any action! What is the point of this? It serves no purpose. I really wish I waited to get a hard copy, but I made the mistake of buying a digital version.

It is not a good game and all these positive ratings are simply wrong!

Different routes add up to 4 playthroughs of the game (3 normal, one golden-path). I highly recommend this game to RPG lovers, and especially tactile gamers. Between the cut-scenes and battles, there are phases of exploration. Some people didn't like this, I found it appealing because each exploration phases has items littered around the map that grant pretty good abilities during battles. One such example is the vanguard scarf that always allows a certain unit to make the first move. Anyways, if you appreciate developers who make games in this genre, support them! Expand

The plot is serviceable, but can actually be pretty dull at times. The cast of good guys is perfectly likable and the cast of wrongdoers are perfectly detestable - but the story just isn't that notable. It tends to tread very familiar territory, but the characters are likable enough for me to have seen it through to the end. The scales of conviction are a unique addition that offers a way for the player to directly change the path that the story takes - if the player can persuade the party members to go along with it, that is. I thought sections with the scales were rather fun and unique and set triangle strategy apart from other SRPGs in that regard.

The sheer amount of text really burnt me out during my first playthrough, but it was because I liked the characters and wanted to see them fleshed out that I continued to view all of the optional character stories. However, Even skipping all of the optional cutscenes, the player will still do a considerable amount of watching, listening, and reading in order to experience the main story (these sections can be skipped as well if the player isn't feeling them). I enjoy story-rich games and don't mind reading walls of text in moderation but, unfortunately, Triangle Strategy doesn't do a great job of juggling story and gameplay. The experience to me seemed somewhat stilted.

The gameplay is pretty average in terms of SRPGs. Its great for newcomers due to the mechanics in play being simple to understand, but I can't help but compare the game to other SRPGs already available on the switch such as the Disgaea series and FE Three Houses. There are a lot more options in those games in terms of combat mechanics and character customization that leaves Triangle Strategy feeling like a dumbed down version - I think Square Enix did much better previously with their own SRPG Final Fantasy Tactics.

Triangle Strategy is by no means a bad game, and I encourage anyone who is interested to check it out. I would say this game would be more enjoyable for newcomers to the SRPG genre and much less so for SRPG enthusiasts. Still, I would recommend to those same players that they check out Three Houses first.

TLDR: its an enjoyable experience for the most part but there are better SRPGS on switch.

I am a huge fan of tactics ogre, final fantasy tactics, and fire emblem, and even Fell Seal. One of the things that made those games great was the ability to customize characters skills. This game has very limited customization for the most part. Each of the characters have a few unique skills which are well-thought out and make every character important on the battle field. Nobody really feels overpowered. This serves the game well in the fact that battles are balanced, but customizing characters is a huge draw for tactics games that this is severely lacking. Furthermore, there are no unique items to uncover, so everything feels static and not particularly rewarding.

The battles are really well done and there are a variety of win-loss conditions presented within them. I often left the battles challenged but not overwhelmed by unfairness. The balance really is well thought out in this game. The mental mock battles are okay, but I would have preferred side quests with battles that had some story to them.

The story serviceable (I am only about 20 hours in though, so I can't speak on the later parts). At first the voice acting is a bit jarring, but ultimately it does well enough to tell the story. I was interested in certain parts, but it did occasionally drag and put me to sleep. I think maybe five to ten minutes of story between battles would have been sufficient. Although, some of the decisions are pretty interesting, and you have to convince your characters to agree with you before actually going through with the decision. This is an interesting system, but it is typically pretty easy to convince the characters to agree with you. Ultimately, knowing that the majority will agree with me makes it less exciting. (I haven't completed the game so it could change later, I don't know).

Ultimately, there is a good game here that lacks the customization I would expect in a game like this. The story can also get in the way of a well-thought out combat system. I would like more games like it honestly. I am just baffled that they excluded all of the things that made its predecessors in the genre addictive and fun.

Triangle Strategy is one of the few games where making decisions that matter is harder than actually winning battles. This is one of those games that could leave a mark on an entire gerne if Square Enix decides to turn it into a franchise.
