Pros: Gorgeous visuals, though they can at times be a tiny bit janky. All in all its among the most pleasant to look at on switch. 9/10

Music: As memorable and infectious as anything from Square. Though definitely not very unique. 7.5/10

Mechanics: The games true sweet spot. The battles and systems are engaging without being overwhelming or impossible. Some can be quite challenging but for the most part hard but fair difficulty.9.5/10

    Cons:

Script: Written like a middle school fan fiction of the War of the Roses. While it picks up later in the game its still very poorly written and expects a LOT of the player to endure completely unneeded linguistic flourishes that are strewn about haphazardly and add nothing to the plot but run time. 3/10

Which brings to the worst element in the game

Voice acting: Inexcusable. The voice actors all sound bored and disinterested. Too many of the voice actors sound nearly identical making characters indistinguishable. You would be better served to turn voice down to zero than listen to this because it is grating and really detracts from the game. It might be something you could overlook had it not been for how much narrative exposition went into the game. 0/10

Pacing: Poor. Its too much like a JRPG pacing where it inexcusably takes like 2 hours worth of cut scenes before getting to any actual game play. Its worse here. In 7 hours of play there was all of 2 battle sequences. YMMV but dont expect much different. It takes far too much time trying to set up these three kingdoms and their strife at the expense of the player. Once it gets that out of the way and picks up the pace it becomes enjoyable but that is beyond the 10 hour mark. That is a MASSIVE commitment on the part of the player to slog through such poorly written and voice acted drek. 3.5/10

    Summary: 6/10
If you can endure the horrendous voice acting and ball and chain pacing there is a true gem here. The mechanics and battles do make up for the terrible cliched and uninspired story once you actually get to them. I would almost say another year of development time would have benefitted this project but its not the technicals that are lacking, Someone should be fired for thinking the writing and voice acting was in any way acceptable. So it definitely drags the whole project down and inevitably this is a game that will quickly get traded in and in a year you will see copies of this for sale about 25-35 dollars because of the quality of those fatal flaws.

Definitely worth a buy, but definitely not at full 60$ price tag.

Music is a huge part in my decision of getting a game and this OST is off the charts especially the lyrical version of the main theme for this game.

For the story, the game is really interesting. Most of the time, the politics displayed is "simple" but for its simplicity, it speaks about hard topics (slavery, war, the weight of principles vs the risk to life) and all is based around 3 values: ethics, pragmatism, and freedom. I really like the idea that the game pushes me to ask myself: will I push freedom or ethics? will i go ethicsFor the story, the game is really interesting. I really like the idea that the game pushes me to ask myself: will I push freedom or ethics? will i go ethics and failure, or pragmatism and success? Should I push my ethics if it doesn't go with freedom? is freedom interesting if it means sacrificing my ethics? Should i fight enslavment for the sake of freedom, or aim to win and then handle the dark means i used to win?

Gameplay: the game is quite good but hard. Many situations have you on the "losing" side; enemies may have a bit of an advantage, and it's only using a "good" play you can compensate. Battles are often not lost when you lose some units, but lose too much and you will never win. So it's a little line on which one walk.
I have felt the grind a bit, but it was very fun because it brings gold and materials you use to improve your weapons.

Units have skills to improve and then "rank"; rank give them access to new skills, and weapins improvement allow you to do more with the skills you have already for all skills, or rarely, one specifics skill.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great game with a solid story, characters, and gameplay. Triangle Strategy clearly took inspiration from multitudes of SRPGs/JRPGs, such as; Fire emblem series, FF, SF etc. Although Triangle strategy took inspiration from these games, it failed to create something new that sets it above the rest, therefore it is nothing unique, though the progression of the cast's relationships makes up for it, you'll clearly see Serenoa and his retainers' character growth, which will immerse you to the story, leading for you to always look forward to the next chapter. It may be slow at first, but the pacing will get better as you progress. Also, the story has alot of plot twist, so look forward to that. Expand

    The good:
    - Battle system scratched the FFT/Fire Emblem itch - diffficulty is on point, controls are great and the class system works well.
    - Music. Very well done here.

    The bad:
    - The game is basically graphic novela with a bit of action sprinkled around long cut-scenes. In comparison to FFTA & FFTA2 it feels hollow, backstories are just text-only scenes on maps you’ll never access in battle (so much wasted potential).
    - Story isn’t bootstrapped well - too many characters introduced too fast on top of the history lesson is not engaging at all.
    - The grind of getting to recommended level with the “bar fights” is just sad in comparison to richness of quests in FFTA series.
    - Flat characters - heroes are boring do-gooders, and baddies are literally Hitler.
    - The voting system - I know some people like it but I found it frustrating, especially with the esoteric conviction system backing it.

If you have an endless amount of money, this game is a fine addition to your Switch collection. However, I like to use the price tag on a game as a benchmark for my expectations. Up to 20 bucks would be a good buy or even a steal. 30 seems average and fair. But anything above it, especially the 60 euro triple A game standard price tag, is just better spent elsewhere. 60 bucks on a SwitchIf you have an endless amount of money, this game is a fine addition to your Switch collection. This game doesn't hold a candle to those games.

The game looks like Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced with a bit more polish. That's a GBA game. Back then, in 2003, when the standards for games were a lot lower FFTA was a solid buy. paying 60 bucks 20 years later for basically a graphical update and a more expansive story just doesn't make sense considering what other studios are putting out on the Switch. If you ever get this on sale for 15-30 then read this review as a 7.5. This game definitely received some love and it does scratch that grid based tactics game itch if that's what you're looking for. The combat is fine, the story isn't really my favourite but it could be yours, and the spritework does look appealing if it's your thing. But for 60, I can't give it more than a 5.

I especially love the conviction and voting system. This might be the first game in which it truly feels like EVERY minor gameplay decision actually affects my experience later on. It's frustrating when I can't convince certain characters to go with my choice, but that's a great thing; all of the characters you meet have distinct personalities and motivations, and the game really lets them shine. Some voice actors aren't great (though some of them are excellent, and I appreciate the full voice acting!), and the decision to use medieval vocabulary and spellings feels rather silly sometimes, but it doesn't detract that much from my overall experience.

Not only is it a solid tactics RPG that should appeal to any and all genre fans, especially those that still look back fondly on Final Fantasy Tactics, it’s also got an engaging, ambitious, and layered story to tell, backed up by incredible world-building and interesting choices with actual weight and consequences. For all of these reasons and more, Triangle Strategy is easily one of the best tactics RPGs I’ve played in recent memory.

Coming off the back of Octopath Traveller I expected a strategy RPG of similarly high quality, and while Triangle Strategy has decent combat, the game just doesn't want you to play it. Buyers should be aware that this game plays more like a visual novel with a bolted on strategy RPG than the full on strategy game we were sold. This would be OK if the game were marketed as a hybrid SRPG/Visual novel, but it isn't and what's worse, the plot taking up 90% of the game, isn't particularly interesting.

    Pros:
    Combat is fun and engaging.
    Art direction is on point.
    Large number of recruitable characters

    Cons:
    Graphics are blurry.
    Music is uninteresting.
The balance of combat to story is way off.
The story is boring and uninspired with a terrible script.
Character progression is extremely linear with no real customization.
    The voice acting is horrendous.

In conclusion, if you want a good strategy game any Fire Emblem, FF Tactics or Tactics Ogre entry does it as good, if not better. If you love the art direction and 2D/3D hybrid style, Octopath is exactly the same only without the blur. Triangle Strategy is maybe worth a look if you're a die hard fan of the genre and really don't mind slogging through the mundane plot to get to the combat, but for most this game just isn't worth the asking price.

Written like a middle school fan fiction of the War of the Roses. While it picks up later in the game its still very poorly written and expects a LOT of the player to endure completely unneeded linguistic flourishes that are strewn about haphazardly and add nothing to the plot but run time

For me this is the biggest disappointment in 2022 (so far).

I know it's different genre, and I very much like games like Fire Emblem (which I scored 8 or even 9 in case of Three Houses), but it's not the point. Anyway, there has already been told enough about all drawbacks of Triangle Strategy in here, so please refer to other mixed comments which cover them honest in detailed way.

I just wanted to warn all people who could possibly hope Triangle Strategy would be of similar quality to Octopath Traveler - there is a big chance you'll be disappointed :(

Also, It's a pity to read all these "Very positive" comments with little justification. Not because of the other people opinions. It just makes me sad how much money they put nowadays into marketing and amplifying a product instead of making simply a good one. It makes me really sad, because if developers keep same trajectory in Octopath Traveler 2 one day, this could be disaster... :(

Whoever wrote the story for this game really thought their audience would be captivated with dull political lore and hidden nuances within the story. I have probably skipped like 6 early game cutscenes waiting for the next battle. Even octopath wasn't this bad. Square Enix dropped the ball on this Story wise. Gameplay is what you'd expect out of a tactical rpg. Nothing blew me away.

Just didn't keep my interest outside of the battles. Characters definitely lacking skills or far too similar with one another: 3 elemental spells, push, multiple slash tiles, pretty much it. And what I dislike the most, there's one ending where you need to do veeeery specific choices in the game. I would've been fine that there'd be multiple paths to reach such ending, but with the way how the game is so slow, 1 playthrough is enough for me. Game is pretty though, but the graphics isnt as crisp as I thought it was gonna be. When I look at it hard, I find it hazy and cloudy. I am a huge fan of tactics ogre, final fantasy tactics, and fire emblem, and even Fell Seal. One of the things that made those games great was the ability to customize characters skills. This game has very limited customization for the most part. Each of the characters have a few unique skills which are well-thought out and make every character important on the battle field. Nobody really feels overpowered. This serves the game well in the fact that battles are balanced, but customizing characters is a huge draw for tactics games that this is severely lacking. Furthermore, there are no unique items to uncover, so everything feels static and not particularly rewarding.

The battles are really well done and there are a variety of win-loss conditions presented within them. I often left the battles challenged but not overwhelmed by unfairness. The balance really is well thought out in this game. The mental mock battles are okay, but I would have preferred side quests with battles that had some story to them.

The story serviceable (I am only about 20 hours in though, so I can't speak on the later parts). At first the voice acting is a bit jarring, but ultimately it does well enough to tell the story. I was interested in certain parts, but it did occasionally drag and put me to sleep. I think maybe five to ten minutes of story between battles would have been sufficient. Although, some of the decisions are pretty interesting, and you have to convince your characters to agree with you before actually going through with the decision. This is an interesting system, but it is typically pretty easy to convince the characters to agree with you. Ultimately, knowing that the majority will agree with me makes it less exciting. (I haven't completed the game so it could change later, I don't know).

Ultimately, there is a good game here that lacks the customization I would expect in a game like this. The story can also get in the way of a well-thought out combat system. I would like more games like it honestly. I am just baffled that they excluded all of the things that made its predecessors in the genre addictive and fun.

    Cons:
    - The music is absolutely shockingly bad. Colossal disappointment after hearing the Octopath Traveler soundtrack, which they just did not long ago. The music is extremely important in a game like this because it's designed after FFT... and the music was extremely important back then. because you're forced to listen to battle music for hours. The battle music in TS is just grating and repetitive. I had to turn it off, which says a lot.

    - The story blatantly "borrows" moments from GoT and FFT. Not original enough.

    - Story recaps "the story so far" over and over and over and unfolds very slowly.

    - Rewards on New Game+ do not scale with the increased difficulty. So, you can't afford upgrades for the first half of New Game+

It would be 8.5-9 easily if not for the huge misstep of the soundtrack.

The game economy is extremely frustrating. All upgrades are extremely expensive, combined with the fact that you have 18 characters. You will only be able to upgrade a few and thus has to be really careful with who you chose to upgrade as there is no room for experimentation here.

The fact that there is no exp share and most encounters only allow 10 characters means you're looking into some serious grinding to level them all up unless you want to focus on a few which I ended up doing. What makes grinding worse is that outside of the story battles, the only way of getting exp is to repeat the same few tavern mock battles over and over. Fun? No...

The voting system is also fundamentally broken. It's based on a random number generator which is affected by invisible stats that you gain from doing various things that are never really explained. If these hidden stats are not high enough it doesn't matter which dialogue options you use when trying to persuade characters. Also some characters are listed as "undecided" when they in fact are 100% aligned to one outcome unless you can persuade them. The whole system just stinks.

Unfortunately the game has too many fundamental design flaws that I simply can't recommend it to anyone but hardcore fans of the genre.

++There's a demo of the game so you can try it out first.
++Excellent gameplay with solid combat mechanics which you get to play on a range of different maps and scenarios.
+The difficulty is well-designed and it never really gets too easy or too hard. That said, I would not recommend playing on "hard" difficulty as I found that it forces you to play very defensively and you'll need to grind quite a bit.
+Good visuals and sound effects. I wish I could see character portraits during dialogue as I think it would express the characters' personality better.
+/- The game is very text and dalogue-heavy, which means your enjoyment will depend on this type of content. I personally found the style of writing to be too flowery and lengthy, which made every character sound like an 19th century count.
-The delivery of the dialogue by the voice actors is pretty underwhelming in English. I ended up switching it off.
+/- The game has about a dozen key choice moments, which lead to branching paths. In practice they are more like detours that inevitably return back to a shared plot point. I'm a bit mixed on this. On the one hand, I enjoy the player agency, but sometimes it also just contrives there to be a dilemma, when you could solve one problem and then the other.
-The characters are a bit bland. One of the things I enjoy about Fire Emblem games is that it has a heterogeneous character cast. Usually there will be at least 1 character whose personality you like and least 1 character you find utterly insufferable. In Triangle Strategy, most characters come across as the moralistic, straight-laced type and the few comedic moments in the game usually do not land well for this reason.

All that said I think this is a good strategy title, although the price tag is a bit high.

Carece de customizacion de los personajes en todo aspecto. Muchos lo han comparado con FFT y no entiendo por que. Literalmente no puedes elegir trabajos, habilidades, armas, nada.

Non story battles : 7/10 the non story battle are push overs with no fun just play for the XP/itens

Customization 3/10 there is none, most stuff is based on level, you cant equip anything besides 2 accessories for each person. there is no class choices, you just level up until a upgraded class unlocks, and its the same as previous class with a new sprite + 2 skills then 1+ skill.

the game is based in the story of your main party, the story is good, the main party is so/so and they change according to your choices, ALL Choices stats are hidden, but some are too obvious other are not.

and here we get to the good part, the choices, there are so many that changes the course of game play, that is the high light, even that 80% of the choices are obvious if someone will like or not, also every 5m a message saying that you resolve changed will pop up, but since its a hidden stats... well

and here the bad: the main party suck compared to the people with no story that joins... and you cant take everyone into to battle so you have to choose, good chars? or story important people that you can care?

The plot is serviceable, but can actually be pretty dull at times. The cast of good guys is perfectly likable and the cast of wrongdoers are perfectly detestable - but the story just isn't that notable. It tends to tread very familiar territory, but the characters are likable enough for me to have seen it through to the end. The scales of conviction are a unique addition that offers a way for the player to directly change the path that the story takes - if the player can persuade the party members to go along with it, that is. I thought sections with the scales were rather fun and unique and set triangle strategy apart from other SRPGs in that regard.

The sheer amount of text really burnt me out during my first playthrough, but it was because I liked the characters and wanted to see them fleshed out that I continued to view all of the optional character stories. However, Even skipping all of the optional cutscenes, the player will still do a considerable amount of watching, listening, and reading in order to experience the main story (these sections can be skipped as well if the player isn't feeling them). I enjoy story-rich games and don't mind reading walls of text in moderation but, unfortunately, Triangle Strategy doesn't do a great job of juggling story and gameplay. The experience to me seemed somewhat stilted.

The gameplay is pretty average in terms of SRPGs. Its great for newcomers due to the mechanics in play being simple to understand, but I can't help but compare the game to other SRPGs already available on the switch such as the Disgaea series and FE Three Houses. There are a lot more options in those games in terms of combat mechanics and character customization that leaves Triangle Strategy feeling like a dumbed down version - I think Square Enix did much better previously with their own SRPG Final Fantasy Tactics.

Triangle Strategy is by no means a bad game, and I encourage anyone who is interested to check it out. I would say this game would be more enjoyable for newcomers to the SRPG genre and much less so for SRPG enthusiasts. Still, I would recommend to those same players that they check out Three Houses first.

TLDR: its an enjoyable experience for the most part but there are better SRPGS on switch.

Before I got the game, I heard a lot of complaints about how long the story. But I think THE STORY IS THE GAME itself. The gameplay is not just the tactics-like battle, its also making decisions which are tied to certain values player believes in or wishes to follow.

Don't let its simple graphics fool you. Beneath its pixel art style is a deeply nuanced story of political intrigue and scheming. Honestly, at times I got some serious Game of Thrones vibes. Actions (sometimes seemingly small in nature) can have noticeable impacts on later parts of the narrative. Something as small as not helping a certain character at one point can have them turn on you quite dramatically later on.

Combat plays out like Fire Emblem, but without the constant worry of permadeath that the aforementioned series is known for. The array of unit types is wide enough to keep combat interesting and engaging for a long period of time. I've currently played the game for around thirty five hours and reached chapter thirteen.

At times you really must act with caution when considering unit placement and terrain. These become key components to securing victory, as you're oftentimes outnumbered.

For me however, one of the game's most interesting mechanics is its voting system.

As a young lord within a kingdom, you don't make single-handed decisions. You defer to your closest friends and allies for guidance. From there, two or three choices are given to you on how to tackle a specific situation. You then vote on it, and the majority decision is put into action. This doesn't mean you aren't free to negotiate with your friends and comrades, however. You're given the means to talk them around to your way of thinking should you wish to pursue a certain path.

My only gripe with this game, and it may just be a personal thing, is the difficulty of one or two levels. A couple of them feel a touch unfair. A few enemies have moves which can be easily abused, all while your cast of characters are left ill-equipped to deal with them due to situational reasons.

All in all though, Triangle Strategy is a must try for those of you who like tactical RPG's and enjoy deeply engaging storytelling. I'd give it a solid 8.5 if that were an option, while deducting just a small amount from what would've been an overall score of 9 if not for the slight issues with combat I just mentioned.

The game's challenge doesn't end with the battles themselves, it also includes several of the difficult choices the game forces you to make throughout the game. There's a number of games with moral testing choices that I spend more time than I really should on, but choices you have to make in Triangle Strategy are choices that you may find yourself spending an entire day thinking over. Often times, you're faced with choices that are either both good or both bad, really testing your convictions. I initially thought this conviction testing mechanic would just be a simple means of unfolding the story a certain way, but rather it's a situation that makes you question some of your own values and weigh the possible outcomes between the one choice or another. It wasn't something I expected to have such a profound effect on how the game is played and how the events of the story unfold. I gotta hand it to the writers of the story, who put a lot of thought and care into developing a 3rd dimensional world with several 3rd dimensional characters portrayed in HD-2D.

As tactical RPGs go, it's one of my favorite non-Fire Emblem games. I still prefer Fire Emblem: Three Houses for Switch tactical RPGs for its variety of gameplay options and more colorful cast, but Triangle Strategy has plenty of charm and things going for it that it's definitely worth getting. There's a ton of characters to recruit, a lot of story to unravel, and the writing style is one of my all time favorites in a medieval age setting. This is a recommended game for anyone who enjoys a deep, thought provoking story where your decisions actually matter.

Different routes add up to 4 playthroughs of the game (3 normal, one golden-path). I highly recommend this game to RPG lovers, and especially tactile gamers. Between the cut-scenes and battles, there are phases of exploration. Some people didn't like this, I found it appealing because each exploration phases has items littered around the map that grant pretty good abilities during battles. One such example is the vanguard scarf that always allows a certain unit to make the first move. Anyways, if you appreciate developers who make games in this genre, support them! Expand

A mission will say recommended lv. 21, but there will be multiple enemies lv 23 and 2 levels make a massive difference in Triangle strategy. For a game that seems like there is lots of opportunity for replays, you will not want to as you have to grind way too much.

Then extra enemies that show up in missions. This is normally fine. Except in one mission, it results in a third of your force being wiped out with no chance to save them. When you need to have advanced knowledge to complete a mission you know the game is bad.

In one mission the Boss enemies and many of the regular enemies just sit there and don't take any action! What is the point of this? It serves no purpose. I really wish I waited to get a hard copy, but I made the mistake of buying a digital version.

It is not a good game and all these positive ratings are simply wrong!

    Main characters are boring AF
    Voice acting is trash
Pace is very slow (it's practically a visual novel with a few battle scenes). I'm a sucker for story-driven SRPG games like FE and and FFT. I love the cutscenes in FFT and I'm excited to see the story progress. But TS has far too much cutscenes. If you're taking an hour just to go through all the cutscenes and character stories before popping into a 20-min story battle (and this happens every story battle), you're playing a visual novel, not a tactics game.
Story isn't even great, character dialogues are questionable most of the times.
Gameplay isn't as deep as you would like.
    Controls are bad
    - there are countless times where I press B to reset the cursor only for it to default the character to "SKIP TURN". There's already a shortcut (+) for the SKIP TURN, why use B as well?
    - some time when camera angles shift (either due to player or game changing the angles), the directional controls get's swapped (right goes up, and up goes left, etc). it's confusing and annoying AF.

    TLDR: 6/10
it's a visual novel with a few battles in between where character progression is close to none, and the story is 'meh'. But visuals are great anyway. Suits it I guess, since it's a visual novel.

There also isn't much in terms of side content. There is the occasional training battle scenario that you can do from your encampment, but that's it. While there seems to be a decent amount of different main story paths to choose from, there isn't much in the way of side content.

The class and upgrade system are also pretty bare bones when you compare them to older titles like FF tactics. There is very little offered for customizing your characters. There are no optional sub classes or ways to customize your character. There is no talent trees or inventory system. Instead its just a basic upgrade and promotion system that will end up the same for 99% of players.

The story is somewhat interesting, but again, there is a bunch of pacing issues that can make it feel like a slog at times.

Overall an enjoyable strategy game, but its just so odd to me that no tactics game has managed to come close to FF tactics or Tactics ogre after all these years. How are class system, side missions, and inventory options less robust than games that came out over two decades ago?
