    - Ending: I am really really displeased with the ending. It's rushed, and really doesn't fit well in the rest of the story.

You can still enjoy the game, just wait a discount or sale. 10€ are really too much

The Way Remastered is full of nostalgia, from the pixelated landscape, to the LucasArts-esque typography, and the 2.5d perspective. It faithfully recreates the look and feel of the 16-bit, Amiga platform so perfectly, that old-school fans such as myself can’t help but be delighted right from the off.

The graphics have clearly been lovingly created, and the backdrops of these alien worlds are ‘painted’ gorgeously, but some of the character artwork and animation (of the ‘assistant’ character, in particular) could have been more polished. I loved the way text labels faded into view as I got closer to the relevant object, and the viewport scrolled to reveal doors opened by switches that were far, far away — these little touches go a long way.

I’d say at least 75% of the puzzles were engaging, and a good level of difficulty; some, unfortunately, were a let-down. At worst, the real challenge was understanding how the puzzle worked, rather than solving it. On one or two occasions, I gave up and ‘brute forced’ them by trial-and-error, which isn't too much fun, nor is it the sign of a well-designed puzzle. But the puzzles that work, especially the highly inventive tasks based around skills that you gain, are good fun if you like a bit of cognitive exercise.

Some of the platforming takes frustration to a new level. I’m not sure how intentional that is, but it borders, at times, on masochistic. If you fall from about three times your own height, you die; call me wild and reckless, but I don’t think that would quite be the case irl. Some of the gaps that require you to jump only a little bit but not quite the-smallest-you-can are incredibly fiddly. And I don’t think I’ve ever played a game in which descending a ladder is so awkward.

The enemies you’ll come across are varied and challenging but fair — the game is generous enough to leave them dead after one kill, most of the time. In fact, the game is also generous in restart points — which you’ll find are used a lot since the platforming and combat are so tough. Even though its short, The Way Remastered has a good, balanced difficulty level, and tests the player in a variety of ways.

As someone who never played Another World or Flashback, it’s possibly a surprise I feel so nostalgic for this game. But it manages to get enough of the detail right, not only to recreate a memorable piece of the past, but also to add a suitable amount of flourish in the process. If a few more of the bigger downsides — length, fiddliness, some obscure puzzles — could be ironed out, The Way Remastered could be more than deserving of its full retail price. As it is, the frequent discount it sells at makes it an utter bargain.

Sometimes the challenge doesn't match the mechanics (never got the hang of jumping super accurately).

Kindof wish they'd hired some more voice actors, as there's at least one smaller character that sounds a lot like someone putting on a voice.

Mal control. Malísimo. Saltos malísimos. Impreciso.

Good game and if you consider value for money (bought it for 3USD) great game! As a kid I played in Another World & Flashback. Here I have found similar climatic graphics & surounding with nice pixel art. Climatic music. Good mechanics. And most of all interesting and somehow emotional story.

I hope that developer of this game will give us more small games on the Switch :)

The characters also have great development and make you really feel for them. Puzzle wise, it's mainly fairly simple puzzles but sometimes it can be frustrating but a simple YouTube search will solve that. The only bad thing about this game is that sometimes the controls can be a little frustrating in some puzzles like the mirror shield (I think it's called that).
This is easily one of my favourite games and I highly recommend you check this out. The best £1 I've ever spent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just created a metacritic profile for the first time explicitly so I could leave a 10 out of 10 review for this game. It's more of an 8, or maybe 8.5. But it's definitely not a 6.

I realize- reading the previous reviews- that the version of the game that I played is perhaps a patched edition? I did not experience game breaking bugs in my playthrough.

I bought this game on sale in the Nintendo Store for about a buck fifty. It was a delight, and a steal. I have strong nostalgic memories of Another World that resonated in this game. Despite some, at times, odd audio-and-text dialogue, the story was compelling and immersive. And the puzzles were intermittently a breeze and challenging. I wouldn't call it a very difficult game, but there were a couple solid challenges. The world building, character design, music score, and overall style were each excellent. And I felt that from reading the other reviews, that the difficulty of Major Tom's controls/movements is greatly exaggerated. I found the game smooth. Plentiful save points balanced out easy and often accidental deaths, which were also often comical.

I would recommend this game to anyone. And I hope we learn more about the two characters at the end of the story that appear briefly in future games released by these developers.

Character not spawning, enemies not dying, scripted events breaking, emergency restart sending you back multiple level worth of progress randomly when it previously worked correctly. Disclaimer: Before I start this review, I should point out that I will only review some of the first few hours of the game, because at some point after those few hours, the game crashed and did not save any of my progress, and as I will explain in this review, I did not enjoy the game enough to be willing to restart it.

Gameplay: The Way is as I previously stated, a puzzle platformer, and luckily it is able to have a solid balance between eventful, fast-paced platformer moments with thoughtful puzzles. The platforming is quite challenging and you will die often, but it is never that bad as you are instantly sent back to the last checkpoint, which is always nearby, at the push of a button, similarly to Super Meat Boy. However, the platforms themselves are standard and occasionally you feel that all your deaths have come due to the characters slow somewhat clunky jumping. The puzzles in the game are clever and make you feel good when you solve them and they also manage to be simple enough that you don’t find yourself resorting to guides for the game. The only problem with some of them is that they take place over large areas that require lots of going back and forth which is made worse by the slow movement of your character.

Story: One of the games biggest selling points is its story which follows Tom, a man whose wife has just died, but he has research from his work leading to another planet that holds the secret for eternal life and he plans on using this secret to bring back his wife. What I like about the story is that Tom never directly states his goal, but you can figure it out from reading his notes and watching the first scene in the game where he digs up his dead wife. Unfortunately, I cannot review the rest of the story because as I already said, the game crashed and did not save any of my progress, but I can say that it seemed intriguing.

Graphics: The graphics are the usual pixel style that most indie games use and it does look good. Also, all the movements are smooth and the backgrounds are animated and lively. The atmosphere is also good and is reminiscent of Metroid, and there are never any instances of the framerate dropping.

Overall: In the end, the game is very standard and though it does not do much that a bad game would, it does not do anything you haven’t done in another, more encapsulating game and it should also be noted that the big progress deleting crash that happened to me could happen to anyone which is likely as the game only autosaves and offers no way to save the game yourself. In the end I would give the game a 6.5 out of 10 and I would only recommend the game to you if you are particularly interested in it or really enjoy puzzle platformers. If you’re in one of those categories then I would say the game is worth your money as it is only about $11.99 and from what I have read offers around 7-10 hours of gameplay, hoping that the game does save your progress.

THE WAY REMASTERED is a badly made game. This must be the reason the game is constantly on sale. But don’t be fooled, even for 99 cents, it is a waste of your time and money!

The game starts out slow, with lots of unnecessary long back tracking needed. The bland and plain boring look of the first section perfectly illustrates the repetitive and uninspired puzzles. This all might seem like something worth to endure to get to the more colourful locations promised by the marketing. (It isn’t.) So, what’s wrong with this game?

The story, while generic, is not to blame. The art style isn’t either, even though it failed to deliver convincingly on the promised retro pixel art, thanks to the programmers not being able to resist to move said pixel art around. The sound effects are nice. The “music” is void of melodic content, it consists mainly of synthesizer pads and atmosphere. You might enjoy it when encountering a new area, but it gets old pretty fast. The voice acting is done well, even if it is annoying after a while. (If you still want to waste money on THE WAY REMASTERED, try it with the music turned down, and the voice acting turned off.)
The gameplay is a bit of a problem. It often consists of solving an insultingly easy puzzle by acquiring a hint on one side of the level, telling you to back track dozens of screens, to find a hit area that was invisible if you had move to fast when encountering it before, only to have you traverse back to where you got the hint. This happens a lot. A LOT! Basically, that is the game.

Where the game really drops the ball, is with the controls. One could forgive the back tracking and solving Professor Layton style puzzles scattered over several screens, but 99.9 % of your deaths are going to be because of the controls not taking your input. You will respawn instantly, often in close proximity of your demise (if you are lucky… ) only to die again, courtesy of sloppy controls.

There are also still game breaking bugs in version 1.4.0 -- the game sometimes randomly decides it does not want to take any input, forcing a restart.

It is rather interesting, how many reviewers mention that they played a patched version. One can only wonder how much worse this game must have been! I personally took note of the developers (Puzzling Dream), and will avoid their œuvre in the future.

(I created an account just for this review, after YEARS of using metacritic, to warn other potential buyers how bad this game is.)

Immersive game with some of the very best pixel art out there. The story is reminiscent of classical science fiction and it has quite some (unobtrusive) world building to add to that. I like atmospheric games that do put effort into storytelling (e.g. point&click adventures), so The Way was interesting for me in the first place.

I like atmospheric games that do put effort into storytelling (e.g. point&click adventures), so The Way was interesting for me in the first place.

Gameplay consists mostly of puzzles and some action sections, and there is barely any repetitiveness in those; the whole game is varied and creative. I have played Another World, Flashback, Heart of Darkness, Oddworld, Blackthorne; but always lost interest after a few hours when these games became too repetitive. The Way is the first puzzle platformer that I have actually finished.

Difficulty and fairness issues, or most unclear puzzles of previous versions of this game seem to be fixed or improved in this remastered version. You may need to consult a walkthrough a few times nevertheless, but otherwise it is possible to get through well (do expect some nerve-racking sections though.. but checkpoints are frequent). The game breaking bug upon Switch release is fixed.

The ending was mildly, but not completely disappointing (you are still rewarded with beautiful new scenes) as it is rather foreseeable and doesn't respect the mystery that has been build up carefully before. Also it only mildly compensates for the sudden action sections you have to get through at the end, which will get unnerving due to the jumping controls that's accuracy do not exactly suit action.. Anyway, got through all these troubles and finished at 7 hours.

Luckily, the puzzle design is on point and is just the right amount of challenge. On top of that, the story knocks it out of the park. It's really engrossing and well told and unfolds at the perfect pace.

The ONLY thing that made my life real harder was the controls. Man.. Sometimes they just didn’t work. When you tried to jump or move many many times. I don’t think it was a bug issue, more of a game design choice, but it was annoying. Rather than that, EVERYONE that likes platform, puzzles and a nice story with a character with strong motive should play The Way. Expand

This game is insane! The story is beautiful, the look is awesome, cool setting and challenging puzzles...sometimes they are too hard

The game had good potential, good vibe, great universe but the control, the platforming and the boring puzzle is why i give a 6/10.

The Way Remastered isn't an experience you're going to forget in a while, but it would be markedly improved with more accurate controls. As such, it's more irritating than it is inspiring in its current form.

The Way Remastered introduces us a man who does not accept the death of the person he loves, and thanks to his experience working as an explorer and researcher, he believes he has found a way to resurrect his wife. The game does not arrive with an impeccable translation into Spanish, and there are small bugs that can complicate the experience of this adventure. However, the game is still an incredible experience that fans of puzzle games will love.

The story was interesting with captivating settings and gorgeous areas to explore. The game also featured a great audio design, with some voice acting accenting the strong background music. The puzzles were difficult but fair, and the sense of accomplishment created true highs. But between glitches and faulty control schemes, I found the game impossible to complete, and that makes it hard to recommend.
