    I'll make this brief, the game is awesome. Metroidvania fans and some of the action/retro fans will love this. It's really one of the best platformers at the moment on the eShop, along with Shantae, shovelknight and Axiom Verge.

    I completed the game about 2 weeks after it was released and I personally think it is an awesome/amazing game! I played a lot of games (mostly platformers) in the past year and this is probably my favorite title! It was a ''almost perfect'' game for me in regards to the level of difficulty, gameplay, map (simple, but good and I like linear games), atmosphere, items, soundtrack (90% wasI completed the game about 2 weeks after it was released and I personally think it is an awesome/amazing game! I played a lot of games (mostly platformers) in the past year and this is probably my favorite title! It was a ''almost perfect'' game for me in regards to the level of difficulty, gameplay, map (simple, but good and I like linear games), atmosphere, items, soundtrack (90% was very good/creepy style), hidden areas, bosses etc. WayForward makes great games and this is another gem. It does not happen often that I want to complete a game for a second time and it is the case with this game! Just buy it or buy it if it comes on sale if you are not convinced.

    PS : It was a little ''buggy'' on the Switch (docked) towards the end of the game (last hour) as there were many enemies. It still should not happen...    … Expand

    Everyone has a genre that is a sort of comfort food. Something that you can jump into no matter how bad or campy it may be – mine is JRPGs. Whether it’s a AAA title, or an indie game emulating what worked well in the 90s, I can always appreciate a JRPG to some extent. But there’s a “genre” that is defined by two series that I may love as much, if not more: metroidvanias.

    WayForward    Everyone has a genre that is a sort of comfort food. Something that you can jump into no matter how bad or campy it may be – mine is JRPGs. Whether it’s a AAA title, or an indie game emulating what worked well in the 90s, I can always appreciate a JRPG to some extent. But there’s a “genre” that is defined by two series that I may love as much, if not more: metroidvanias.

    WayForward started making games back in the 90s, and before they had a chance to release their big IP Shantae, they would create licensed games. When you think of games based off of movies or television shows, your feelings are probably mediocre at best. And to be honest, those feelings would be valid for most games that were released. The difference is, WayForward puts their all into everything they create. I’m not say Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses was the best game of 2006, but it is likely the best Barbie game you can play. When I heard that the most recent Mummy movie was getting a game, I was cautiously optimistic based on the initial screens I saw. After I heard who was developing it, I knew there was no reason to fear.

    The Mummy Demastered is a classic metroidvania title in the style of WayForward. You have a map with waypoints of where to go, different colored rooms based on what they contain, and secrets galore, often hiding upgrades to health or weaponry. You’ll also gain new abilities as you progress, allowing you access to previously unreachable areas. The first is given very early on in the form of a grenade, which opens up boarded off rooms. After the first boss, you’re given the ability to climb along ceilings, stopping to shoot if need be. For each ability you gain, a new obstacle will keep you from progressing, meaning you’ll have to come back when you have the right artifact.

    Having never seen the recent movie, I can’t speak to how much of a crossover there is in content. I know that Princess Ahmanet is in both, but that’s about it. While I haven’t seen Tom Cruise battle one of the Universal monsters in their new expanded movie universe, I can tell you that it’s not needed for the enjoyment of this game. While some tie-in games like to reference the movie and make you go “oh yeah, we’re at this part,” this is fantastic without any context. For me, the characters could have been anyone else and it would’ve been just as good.

    The basic controls of the game involve moving, shooting in 8 directions, rolling, and jumping. As stated previously, you will gain new abilities as you progress, but these are what you’ll use most. Weapons have limited ammunition outside of your initial machine gun, although picking up ammo is as easy as killing an enemy or shooting a lantern or any other breakable objects. It wasn’t until the first boss that I even bothered to use my secondary weapon. It’s also here that you see the game’s way of telling you where a boss is with its life – they gradually turn red. For those of us that played a lot of games in the 90s, this will be familiar. You know how some developers you loved as a child have gone in directions you disagree with? WayForward is the developer that has stayed true to themselves after almost 30 years. If you took 90s Capcom or Konami and dropped them in present day, this is what they’d be making.

    If you’re familiar with Castlevania or Metroid, you should be right at home here. Enemies will throw their bones at you, projectiles will pass through the ground or the walls that would protect you otherwise, and the enemies are never-ending. Wall crawling foes will drop on you if they happen to see you below. Winged beasts will fly up and down in your general direction; shooting balls of plasma every chance they get, hoping to knock you off that platform you strove to reach only to fall in some acid (quite honestly, this is what upset me the most while playing – the knock back from damage did elicit several choice words throughout). Enemies will also flood the screen, and you’ll have to time your jumps and shoot with precision to avoid death. But don’t worry; there are plenty of save points around the map. And you can always farm health from enemies by leaving a room and coming back, or by using spawn areas for certain mobs. The game even has collectibles for you to find if you fancy yourself a completionist. Finding them all may or may not affect the endgame.

    This is very much the type of game that brought me into this field of entertainment. This is what a solid 90s game looks and feels like when made today. This is the type of the thing that WayForward is known for, and another reason you should care about what they develop and publish. The Mummy Demastered is the type of game you show someone that says they miss the “good ol’ days” of video games. If you dislike 2D shooters with upgrades, secrets, and bosses, stay away.     As a game, Mummy Demastered is void of originality. It is 70% Metroid, 20% Castlevania and 10% Contra. As reference points you could most certainly do worse and to be honest, this game does a great job of emulating its influences. WayForward knows how to make retro-inspired games, as a matter of fact that's their bread and butter: Duck Tales Remastered, Double Dragon Neon, Contra 4, MightyAs a game, Mummy Demastered is void of originality. The studio has made a name for itself remastering, imitating, and making sequels to classic 8-bit and 16-bit games.

    The other thing they are known for is making solid franchise games, which is unique in itself because generally games based on movies/cartoons are frankly not known for their quality, as a matter of fact in the 8-bit and 16-bit era, as a general rule, your best bet was to avoid them at all cost (Capcom/Konami ones excluded). Their successes in that realm include Aliens Infestation, Adventure Time, Scorpion King: Sword of Osiris, and now The Mummy Demastered. The movie itself might have been a massive flop and the nail in the coffin for the Universal Monsters Universe that had been planned before release, but for WayForward it was just another opportunity to flex their Metroidvania muscles.

    It's a short game 5-7 hours depending on how many secrets you go after, but that is perfect, because you do not have time to get bored and sometimes short and sweet is exactly what you want in world riddled with 100 hour + AAA games. Solid level design and gameplay, satisfying shooting and weapon upgrades, as well as power upgrades, combined with 16-bit pixel art that will remind you of the best Metroid and Castlevania GBA entries.

    Super fun weapons (shout-out to plasma gun and Flamethrower)
    Perfect Length, Never Gets Tedious
    Satisfying sound design and music
    Scratches that Metroid itch.

    Disliked:

    Very straightforward, you always know where to go and even secrets are barely hidden, however, it also prevents the game from veering into backtracking hell and becoming a slog. A happy medium would have been nice.

    Feels a lot like Super Metroid from way back on the SNES and that is definitely not a bad thing. Only gripe I have with it would be the amount of backtracking you'll end up doing but if you go into this knowing it's a Metroidvania game then you're prepared for that.

    This game is a masterpiece! If you like Metroidvania's then you will like it. I played through it twice in a row to get all the trophies and it was fun both times! I want more games like this.

    And the music is some of the best you'll hear in any game.

The areas and enemies are sufficient enough, but I would have liked to see some more variety thrown in.

    Here is my biggest flaw with the game, and the one that really knocks the score down a few points: the challenge/difficulty doesn't come from having to fight tough enemies, but rather having a lot of enemies thrown at you all the time. It becomes especially frustrating when you need to platform; you'll find yourself getting knocked off constantly and having to redo it all multiple times.

    So, is it worth picking up? I say yes, especially if you are an avid Metroidvania fan. The game is by no means perfect, and its flaws may possibly put off a lot of players, but its still very much a good game that should be added to your collection.    … Expand

    At first I found the controls clunky but after giving myself time to adjust I feel completely in control of my character.
    Very rarely do Metroidvania games vary far from the formula and this one sticks to the formula but somehow makes it feel unique.
    I enjoyed the boss battles, a little easy but just enough challenge to not be too dull. Definitely recommended

    The Mummy Demastered feels less like a movie tie-in and more like a love letter to the metroidvania genre. The art style will appease a retro gamer appetite while it brings some modern elements to keep it fresh and engaging. If you're a fan of games of this ilk, then it is a must-have purchase. If you're not sure what metroidvania is, give it a go anyway. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

    The Mummy Demastered gives Switch owners a Metroidvania style game, while also delivering an experience that brings in some twists of its own. It has a few small warts that hold it back from the classic status of the video game franchises that inspired it, but the fact that can be said for a licensed game in 2017 is nothing short of remarkable.
